HALL OF FAME
The IHSAA instituted the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1969 to honor the excellence of players and coaches who have shaped the history of the sport in our state. Players will be honored at halftime of the 3A championship, and coaches will be honored at halftime of the 4A championship. Presentations in 2021 are for the class of 2020, whose induction ceremonies were canceled due to COVID-19 related spectator restrictions on March 13, 2020.
IHSAA Basketball Hall of Fame Inductees RUSS BANZHAF: An all-conference athlete in four sports at Springville, Banzhaf went to another small community after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 1978 and never left. A teacher and coach at Ackley-Geneva and later AGWSR, Ackley, his teams went 423-310 over his 33 seasons as head coach (1986-2018), winning six NICL-West titles and advancing to six substate finals. Banzhaf's two state tournament appearances resulted in a 2001 runner-up finish and 2005 third-place finish in Class 2A. A long-time member of the IBCA board of directors, he also spent 17 years as his school's boys' track and field coach. Banzhaf and his wife Bonnie still live in Ackley and have two children, daughter Lindsey (Dustin) Watt and son Matthew, and four grandchildren.
TIM BELL: A three-sport student-athlete at Oelwein, Bell played baseball at Upper Iowa before becoming a teacher and coach at Ar-We-Va, Westside. He spent all 39 years of his career there, compiling a 527-302 record as head coach before retiring in 2016. The Class 1A program recorded winning seasons 28 times with Bell, won 12 conference championships, and were substate finalists three times. His final teams won 57 straight regular season games and lost just once in the Rolling Valley Conference over a three-year run. Bell lives in Westside and continues to work as a substitute teacher and sub-varsity official. He has three married daughters – Jadee Purdy, Lauren Jensen, and Tilane Good – and eight grandchildren.
MARK BIGLER: An all-conference player for Hall of Fame coach Jerry Eimers at Greene, Bigler joins those ranks after coaching in more than 800 games at Denver, Fort Madison, Burlington, and Davenport, West. In 1984, his Denver squad won the Class 1A state championship and Bigler was state coach of the year. He left the Cyclones and later Fort Madison as the program wins leader. He broke droughts at Fort Madison and Davenport, West, winning conference titles and sportsmanship honors along the way. Bigler retired in 2018 after 36 years as head coach and is now a motivational speaker on leadership and decision-making. He and fiancee Brenda Buckles have a family which includes five children and eight grandchildren.
DAN CORREY: A four-sport competitor at YJB in Jamaica from 1977-80, Correy's basketball coaching career began with the Central Lee girls' six-on-six team in 1985. He then went to Marquette, West Point, where he recorded a 124-58 mark and his first state tournament appearance with boys' teams. Correy notched 277 of his 401 career wins at Beckman Catholic, Dyersville, where he went to the state tournament in 2002, 2005, and 2007. The Blazers finished third in 2002 and he was named Class 2A coach of the year in 2005. He has served as an assistant coach at Beckman for the last two seasons and continues to coach junior high track and field. Correy is the father of two daughters, Brette (Tyler) Jensen, and Brady.

OFFICIALS
Contest officials play an essential role in our interscholastic athletic programs, leading the IHSAA to establish an Officials Hall of Fame in 1971. Inductees will be honored at halftime of the 3A championship. Presentations are for the class of 2020, whose induction ceremonies were canceled due to COVID-19 related spectator restrictions on March 13, 2020.
IHSAA Officials Hall of Fame Inductees JAY FLORA: An all-conference athlete at West Marshall and football player at Simpson College, Flora joined the officiating ranks in 1980 as he immediately missed being on the field. An excellent three-sport official, Flora has worked baseball, basketball, and football at the varsity and collegiate levels, including 10 baseball championship games and four football championships for the IHSAA. In addition to working central Iowa conferences like the CIML, Raccoon River, Heart of Iowa, and Little Hawkeye, he has received five NCAA Tournament assignments in basketball. He and his wife Tammy live in Marshalltown and have two daughters, Tara and Jenny.
JEFF FRESE: A native of Norway and member of five state baseball championships with coach Jim Van Scoyoc's legendary program, Frese graduated in 1984 and became a registered official while in college in 1986. His 34 years as a baseball umpire have included 23 state tournaments and 12 state title games, plus numerous NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA postseason events. Frese also works as the baseball umpire assignor for the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference. He has made seven state tournament appearances in boys' basketball and worked seven postseason games in football. The son of Dan and Shona, Frese works for Farm Bureau Insurance and lives in Norway.
ROYCE RANNIGER: A native of Manning, Ranniger began officiating while he was a student at Briar Cliff and jumped in fully a few years later. Registered with the IHSAA for 39 years, he has worked football (16 postseasons, five championships) and basketball (16 state tournaments) while also excelling for the IGHSAU. Ranniger was named boys' basketball official of the year in 2008, girls' basketball official of the year in 2014, and named NFHS Section 4 Distinguished Active Official in 2015. He has also worked NAIA basketball postseasons. Ranniger and his wife Kathy have two sons, grandchildren, and live in Sioux City.
KURT WALDERBACH: Attending high school at Cedar Rapids, Jefferson then North Central, Manly, Walderbach was a multi-sport standout and Drake Relays competitor and graduated in 1979. He played baseball at North Iowa Area Community College, then attended the University of Iowa. He officiated intramurals while studying and trying to stay physically active in Iowa City, and has kept at it for 40 years for the IHSAA and IGHSAU. He has worked 18 postseasons and eight title games in football, 24 state tournaments and three titles games in boys' basketball, 20 tournaments and five championships in girls' hoops, and three championships in softball. He and his wife Angie live in Mason City and have four children: Amanda, Andrea, Blake, and Reid.

IOWA PRIDE CHALLENGE The Iowa Pride Challenge has been serving schools and communities for a decade as basketball teams routinely perform service projects benefiting their local communities. Many of those efforts were severely impacted this past fall as COVID-19 forced many of the annual participating schools to abandon their projects. There were still a handful of schools that were able to complete service projects and conduct scrimmages. We want to thank all those who began the Pride Challenge process and those who participated. Community service award winners have been determined and are listed below with each receiving a $500 service award for their student government program. The five service award winners for 2020-2021 are as follows: • • • • •
Albia – A Family in Need Yard Work Waterloo, West – Clean the Athletic Area Event Calamus-Wheatland – Community Food Drive Carroll – Farmers to Families Food Box Program Fairfield – Youth Basketball Skills & Role Models
