The Green Page
COP 26: the climate opportunity turned catastrophe The COP 26 climate conference was sold as an opportunity to save the planet from the devastating impacts of climate change. Now the event has ended, we look at what happened, why it matters to beauty and why, ultimately, many are calling the event a dramatic failure.
WHAT WAS IT?
WHAT WAS AGREED?
COP 26 was a global climate change convention that sought to set international targets, goals and pledges to reduce the impact humans have on the planet. Hosted in Glasgow during November 2021, over 25,000 people attended the conference with delegates negotiating agreements in response to the global environmental crises.
At the end of two weeks negotiation, a set of pledges referred to as The Glasgow Climate Pact was released.
The conference aimed to forge binding commitments which would ensure countries take tangible action to reduce global warming. At the end of the event, the organisers of COP26 released a series of pledges detailing efforts to prevent environmental catastrophe. While the event made headlines around the globe, the true value of the conference is hotly debated. Activists accuse the event of purely paying lip service to the crisis – not actually instilling change. Others accused the event as being a platform for greenwashing, where nations play politics, disregarding scientific campaigners and listening more closely to lobbyists from big business. While numerous delegates came on behalf of pioneering campaigns and companies, there were more attendees representing fossil fuel companies than there were for any one nation, according to analysis from the BBC.
The official announcement of the agreement stated that: “The Glasgow Climate Pact, combined with increased ambition and action from countries, means that 1.5C remains in sight, but it will only be delivered with concerted and immediate global efforts”. However, the pledges were met with dismay by many, after countries including China and India blocked strong commitments to erradicating coal power, claiming their developing economies were reliant on the fuel to build future prosperity. KEY GOALS Key goals in the agreement, signed by over 200 countries and dubbed the “Glasgow breakthroughs” include: •
Power: Clean power becomes the most affordable and reliable option worldwide
•
Road transport: Zero-emission vehicles become the new normal and are accessible, affordable and sustainable in all regions
•
Steel: Near-zero emission steel is the preferred choice in global markets, with efficient use and near-zero emission steel production established and growing in all regions
•
Hydrogen: The aim is for affordable renewable and low carbon hydrogen to be globally available
•
Agriculture: Climate-resilient, sustainable agriculture becomes the most attractive and widely
WHY SHOULD I CARE? The responsibility to drive change lies with all of us, and the beauty industry can play an important part of that. Not only can we make choices in businesses, products and services that encourage environmental change, but we can encourage our clients to make sustainable choices in their daily lives. As part of COP 26, the British Beauty Council took a delegation to highlight the important changes beauty businesses and consumers alike must make for a sustainable future. Beyond this, the conference demonstrated the need for continued individual action to pressure leaders into making greater, more effective changes than resulted from the fortnight of talks.

THE IIAA VERDICT COP 26 was a disaster for the planet. A rare yet vital opportunity to force dramatic, global change has been missed, with “watered down” targets that will fail to prevent climate catastrophe. For real change to happen, there must be international, binding mandates committing to investing in sustainable change. When there is a legal imperative to change from the very top of the hierarchy, the trickle-down impact could be enormous. COP 26 was a chance to make these binding changes. Instead, we witnessed a selfish show of tokenism and greenwashing. The goal of the conference, and the Paris Climate Agreement, was to put plans in place that limit global warming to 1.5 degrees centigrade. The conference organisers themselves admit that the pledges do not go far enough – and experts estimate that if all pledges are achieved on schedule global warming could reach 2.4 degrees centigrade – meaning mass devastation. So why the failure to act? Where countries should have focused on collective efforts and pooling expertise for the benefit of all, too many were instead fixated on immediate financial interest or personal political gain. Without global co-operation, any efforts from others will be useless. The absence of some of the world’s largest polluters, including Russia and China, from the conference was symbolic of the lack of importance some are placing on the crisis. While countries such as the Maldives and Tuvalu desperately plead for change to reverse already urgent situations – with homes quite literally vanishing into the sea – the forces of power simply looked the other way.
Many of the actions that have been taken are also of questionable benefit. Numerous companies have pledged “net zero” carbon emissions – where any emissions are offset by funding sustainable projects. What we really need are commitments to “actual zero” – where carbon emissions are eradicated entirely. The concept of net zero can be seen either as a stepping-stone, or as laziness. The global attention garnered by COP 26 attests to the growing awareness and pressure from individuals when it comes to climate change – and this is one small positive to come out of the convention. While the conference itself was a policy disaster, the related groundswell of passion, creativity and determination shown by a growing number of climate activists provides hope that all is not yet lost. If we all take up the mantle of sustainable responsibility, the pressure on governments to act will grow to the point where it necessitates dramatic change.
“Our fragile planet is hanging by a thread. We are still knocking on the door of climate catastrophe." UN secretary general Antonia Guterres

Vitamin A & Retinol labelling update
Following a recent update in EU regulations, the wording on the packaging of a select few Environ®products has been updated. You may notice that products containing higher strengths of vitamin A now include an additional note, stating: “do not use this product with other retinol containing skincare products”. Retinol and other vitamin A derivatives are safe and highly effective ingredients for skin health. They help fibroblast cells to function effectively, promote cell renewal, protect cell DNA and support normal collagen formation – among numerous other functions. Treating the skin with topical vitamin A delivers advanced skin health results and more youthful-looking skin. The messaging is a directive from the EU Scientific Committee and is based on unsubstantiated science linking high vitamin A intake to osteoporosis in the elderly in Scandinavian countries. The committee became concerned over the possible transmission of vitamin A from the skin into the bloodstream. We know from robust scientific research that this is physiologically impossible, as we do not have the correct enzymes to transfer vitamin A from the skin to the bloodstream. When vitamin A is applied to skin, it becomes “trapped” there and cannot be transferred to the blood in high levels. There is no evidence linking vitamin A in topical skincare to any negative effects that may occur with chronically high levels of vitamin A in the bloodstream. All Environ® products contain safe yet impactful levels of vitamin A, and have powerful, long-term benefits for skin health – which you and your clients have likely experienced first-hand.
To align with the new regulations, the higher stages of the step-up system have been altered slightly, changing which products you should recommend to clients and when. Look out for a dedicated eblast coming very soon, with full details and FAQs. As Environ® is sold globally, this new regulation is found on all packaging, however the regulation is only applicable in EU countries and does not apply outside of the EU. Dr Des Fernandes is highly regarded as a world leading authority on topical Vitamin A, with over 30 years of experience using high levels of topical Vitamin A both on himself and on many thousands of patients and trialists. He has never seen any adverse effects and in a recent test of his own bone density, physicians compared levels to that of a 20 year old rugby player. For more information, please consult your up to date Environ® training manual, or your copy Vitamin A Skin Science by Dr Des Fernandes. Additionally, the packaging has been updated to reflect that the products are safe for use during pregnancy. Environ® has always had strong scientific evidence that its products containing vitamin A are safe during both pregnancy and lactation, and we are pleased to see regulations finally reflecting the science on this front. With the exception of the Body Essentia Tri-Complex Contouring Cream, all Environ® products are safe for use during pregnancy. However, it is important to remember that during pregnancy the skin’s response to cosmetics may temporarily change and therefore should your client wish to continue using Environ, we advise the use of lower levels of vitamin A if the skin is sensitive.

Anti-Ageing with Dr Gaby
Every month our medical director Dr Gaby Prinsloo shares her insights and expertise on health, wellbeing and anti-ageing topics. This month: why breath-work is a smart tool for soothing stress.
A
s we approach the stress of the festive season, remember to … just breathe…
We usually don’t think about our breathing: it is just something our body does by itself. But how we breathe affects our mood, our health and our skin. Deep breathing, also referred to as belly breathing, diaphragmatic breathing or abdominal breathing, is a very effective tool for changing your physical, emotional, and mental state. One of the main ways that deep breathing improves our health and skin, is through the activation of the relaxation response. This is a state of rest, in which we feel calm, we digest food effectively and our bodies heal. It is the opposite of the stress (fight-flight) response. When we are stressed, blood flows to our muscles and away from skin and digestion. Stress hormones such as cortisol increase, leading to inflammation, flare ups of problem skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and acne, delayed skin healing and accelerated aging. The relaxation response can reverse many of these changes. While it can be elicited in many ways, one of the best is controlled, deep breathing. When we breathe deeply, a signal is sent from the lungs to the brain which changes the activity of the autonomic nervous system (the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling our stress and relaxation responses). The brain calms down and sends a message to the rest of the body to relax. Cortisol levels lower, inflammation decreases, digestion improves and our capacity to heal increases. There are many different breathing techniques which elicit the relaxation response. All of them have benefits, so it is
Deep breathing, also referred to as belly breathing, diaphragmatic breathing or abdominal breathing, is a very effective tool for changing your physical, emotional, and mental state.
worth experimenting to find the ones that you enjoy. The advantage of deep breathing exercises is that you can practice anywhere, anytime. For those new to the practice, a good way to start is with a basic slow breathing exercise. Find a comfortable place to sit or lie. Focus your attention on your breathing. Notice the air moving in and moving out. Breathe in slowly though your mouth or nose, and allow your chest and belly to expand. (You can place a hand on your lower belly to feel it expanding fully if that helps.) When your lungs feel full and before you start to strain, let yourself exhale slowly and steadily. If you are not used to breathing slowly, it helps to purse your lips throughout the breath, as if you are breathing through a straw. With each breath, slow your breathing down as much as you can without straining. Notice how you feel throughout the whole process. You will find your body starting to relax. For most people, the optimal rate to get maximum benefit is around six breaths per minute (five seconds in and five seconds out). This is much slower than you may be used to. If you feel dizzy or light-headed at first, you might need to breathe a bit faster for the first few sessions until you feel comfortable. Your body will get used to it. It is also important to pay attention to the ratio of inhalation and exhalation. When we breathe in, our stress response is activated. When we breathe out, our relaxation response is activated. When you want to focus on something and get into the zone, you should aim for an equal inhalation and exhalation. This creates the optimal balance of stress and relaxation for us to perform at our best. If you are feeling very stressed and need to relax (especially when trying to get to sleep) focus on a prolonged exhalation. Aim to practice slow, deep breathing for 10 minutes once or twice a day. The optimal is around 20 minutes a day, however if that is too much initially, you can gradually build up to it. Regular daily practice is essential! The more you practice, the more effectively and quickly your body responds, and the longer the benefits last. We need to activate the relaxation response daily to consistently decrease inflammation and improve our health and our skin.

iiaa news
A NEW
ERA
It is the beginning of a new era for the iiaa, as we move out of our head offices in Priestley Way, North London. 12 Priestley Way has been home to the iiaa for 8 years, and during our time overlooking the Welsh Harp nature sanctuary, the business has experienced significant growth as we have developed our brands and services. As we embrace the exciting new skincare landscape, we are transitioning to contemporary, upgraded new offices in London Bridge, SE1. We will move into our new premises in January 2022. We are sure our new, wellconnected central location will be a welcome change for stockists visiting us for practical training and meetings. The new offices are currently being prepared for the iiaa, and until we move in, all staff members will be working from home. They can be contacted in the normal manner during office hours. Moving forward, stockists will no longer be able to collect orders from Priestley Way. If you wish to collect orders in person, you must instead collect them from our Hemel Hempstead warehouse. If you wish to do this, please inform your KIT team member when placing your order. Our London practical training courses will recommence in January 2022, once our SE1 offices have opened. During this pause, our industry-leading virtual training remains available for stockists, and can be booked by contacting the training department. Festive season opening hours and shipping days Season’s Greetings from the iiaa Another whirlwind of a year is drawing to a close, and with the festive season in full swing, we want to thank our network of stockists for your loyalty and support this year. All of us at the iiaa send you the warmest of season’s greetings. After the tumult of 2020, this was a year spent gradually getting back to reality – and once again we applaud the tenacity and creativity of all the professionals in our network while times have been tough. We hope you and your teams have a restful holiday season, and that the New Year brings you good health, prosperity and new achievements. Our offices are closed over the festive break: we will close at end of business on Thursday 23rd December 2021 and re-open on Tuesday 4th January 2022. The Last shipping days before the 25th December are as follows: UK: Tuesday 21st December 2021 Ireland: Friday 17th December 2021
As online selling remains an important priority for the professional beauty industry, we remind our stockists that the iiaa has rigorous terms and conditions relating to the sale of Advanced Nutrition Programme™, Environ® and jane iredale via the internet. A reminder that any direct or indirect sales of iiaa Brands' products by stockists via any third party website such as eBay and Amazon is not permitted. In addition, all stockists must complete a client consultation before supplying any Environ® product. Our full terms and conditions can be found on the iiaa. eu website. Please make sure to read these carefully. These terms and conditions are in place to protect clients, therapists, salons and brands, and to enable the iiaa to empower you and your clients with our world-leading products and treatments. We know that this issue greatly concerns our loyal stockists, and we assure you we close all accounts committing non-compliance. Most recently, we closed down an account responsible for a large proportion of non-compliant sales on a third party website, and we are continually working to identify additional culprits.

DECEMBER 2021 22
Price changes Since 2020, we have absorbed an increase in both supply chain, logistics, packaging, and ingredient costs of our products. During the past year some ingredients have experienced double-digit increase – in fact, some actives have more than doubled in cost. There comes a time when we are forced to introduce a minimal increase on our prices to continue investing in our formulations and materials. However, where possible, we have been able to decrease prices on certain products due to fluctuating costs, to offset increases elsewhere. Please find below a list of products with slight price adjustments. No other products outside of this list have been affected. Updated wholesale and retail price lists can be found on our digital asset library, image relay. These prices are effective from 1st January 2022. ENVIRON® W/S EXISTING
