Zbigniew “Zeb” Jarosz, one of the most renowned architects in Florida, gained the reputation of taking elements of classical architecture and translating them into a modern style. Born and educated in Poland, he comes from a family of architects, builders, and merchant marine captains. He continues the family traditions away from home, in Miami, FL where he runs an architect firm Z.W. Jarosz Architect P.A. and a construction company Jarosz Development Corporation. He resides amongst his bohemian friends in Coconut Grove, the oldest part of Miami. He lives with his wife Raquel and a cat named Kitty. Zeb shares his reflections on architecture and Miami with Ile Maison’s Justyna Suric.
The syndrome of many architects today is to complete the design and hand it to the general contractor with a note ‘you are on your own’. I am not this way. I am a builder. - Zeb Jarosz-
I always held a serene contact with nature, a reason that I like boating. When I was younger, I caught a fish and I saw it dying. I realized that I never wanted to cause harm if I could help it. The certain benefit of becoming older let me recognize my shortcomings and fortes, which gives me certain peace and serenity.
Is it true that a lot of people are moving to Miami today? How does it affect architects in Miami? The pandemic did not have a negative impact on us. On the contrary, we have a lot of work as there are crowds arriving here from New York and California. Do you see any new trends in the market? The prices in Miami have skyrocketed. The new clientele is taking over the market. It is a generation of successful young professionals, between the ages of late 30s and early 50s. They are substantially wealthy, with young families or even single. For example, one new arrival is an entrepreneur in publishing, Bryan Goldberg. Miami’s playgrounds are still popular. We built a 40,000 square foot house for Michael Jordan in Jupiter in the past. I received a call recently from a real estate broker whose client loved and wanted to buy one of my houses immediately for roughly thirty million dollars. I connected with some of my clients who potentially might be interested in selling their properties, but there wasn’t anyone interested due to the present real estate market. New construction would take at least two years and obtaining all the necessary permits for construction from local municipalities is very time consuming.
What kind of projects interest you in this changing market? We are usually focused on residential projects with budgets above five million dollars, excluding the cost of land. We completed a vast array of projects from New York to the Caribbean. We worked on some hotel projects, such as Resorts World Bimini in the Bahamas, however there is not that many investments in this industry today. If I had a choice, I would work locally only. I have a construction company and I like to build my projects. I like the freedom of working on details. Your company's headquarters are in the heart of Miami. Is that important today when work can be done remotely? Yes, our location is great, and it matters to me. It takes me five minutes to get to my boat by the bay and ten minutes to get home, as both are within walking distance. I have a house that was built in the 1920s and belonged to a relative of Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone. There is an anecdote that the owners of the house installed a telephone for his arrival. However, when the famous guest arrived, he ripped it from the wall explaining that he was on vacation, not at work. I can relate to this. I like the fact that just after work I can go to the yacht club across the street. On any Friday, the bartender would know to prepare a dirty martini for me.
What makes your work enjoyable? My wife Raquel works with me. She is a New Yorker and has a great energy. We met over twenty years ago at the housewarming party of one of my clients in the Gables Estates in Miami. She is responsible for operations. I am a master builder. I always had ambitions of following my grandfather's footsteps who was an architect and a builder. I wanted to continue this great European tradition of master builder in the US, even though it is not that popular. Architects and General Contractors are strictly specialized. I am both, I am a licensed architect and a general contractor. Some people do not want to deal with construction because it is very demanding, and clients can be difficult sometimes. The concept of separation from a contractor and an architect is relatively new. It is a product of XIX or beginning of XX centuries, when children of rich parents wanted to study architecture but did not want to dirty their hands with construction work.
Zeb Jarosz and his wife Raquel
Do you have a model master builder who had an impact on you? Reflecting on the past, I really admire Filippo Brunelleschi, the creator of Il Duomo in Florence, Italy. He was a builder, he was an architect, he was entangled in a huge political game with the city of Florence. It was so fascinating to learn the story on how he developed a new technique of building. Zeb's home in Coconut Grove
It was amazing how many issues he had to fight with in political, technical, and creative arenas. That is what architects should be capable of doing, especially when they are called master builders. The syndrome of many architects today is to complete the design and hand it to the general contractor with a note ‘you are on your own’. I am not this way. I am a builder. What kind of projects are your clients most interested in now? What kind of style do they prefer? My clients sometimes know my completed projects better than I do. I must rely the documentation, and photographs to be able to recall some details I am asked about. I like classical architecture, Greek, Roman and Renaissance. Being raised in Poland, one is surrounded by neoclassical architecture. Aside from England and Germany, neoclassic architecture was very strong there. This is my forte and, in my heart, I am a classicist. I have it in my blood in a way. I have gained the reputation of taking elements of classical and vernacular architecture, here it is called Mediterranean, and translate it with a much more modern language. Would I do something strictly modern? Yes. Underlying philosophy of that architecture, not being literal, is to not over burden it with unnecessary details Will I do something that is classical?
Yes. I pride myself that I achieved certain fluency in a number of architectural languages. If I can learn to speak many languages, I can express the same message in different languages. The same is with architecture. One can have certain feelings for classical architecture versus modern architecture, but there are principles of proportion and scale that are universal. What is your favorite project so far? All my favorite designs were heavily rooted in the classical architecture. One of them is the one I built 20 years ago. It is on North Bay Road. It is authentic in its Mediterranean form but infused with modern sensibilities. We did a project for Matt Damon also on North Bay Pond that I liked. I have genetic sentiment towards history and continuity. After graduating from the Polytechnic in Krakow, Poland, I worked on historical restorations. That is why I bought my house in Coconut Grove, the oldest section of Miami. Having this little piece of history for myself was very important to me. I bought it over twenty years ago and I still have it. It is one of my places. What is it about Coconut Grove that you like so much? Coconut Grove used to be a hippy colony. It was very bohemian when I moved in. I was always joking that even if you did not smoke anything, you felt like you did after only a 15 minute walk there. It became more and more gentrified, although the vibe of a sailing community with a walkable mall with local streets is still there. It was always giving me the sense of history as I am a history buff.
North Bay Road Residence, Miami, Fl
Are there any similarities you notice amongst your clients? I am not Jewish; however, I have a quite a following in orthodox Jewish communities, and I can tell that they build for generations to come. When they invest, it is usually for the kids to follow, the continuity and tradition matters to them. For most clients otherwise, it rather does not matter. It becomes less and less visible, but years ago clients had a pretty disposable attitude towards their houses. Other than the fact that your office is in Miami, what do you like about this city? There were always builders and Merchant marine captains in my family. If I weren’t accepted for architecture, I would join a marine academy. I sail a lot here in Miami. I have a US Coast Guard license and used to run charters pretty frequently. I love boating and cycling. For cycling Miami is dangerous, although I bike about hundred miles every week. For boating, however, there are plenty of opportunities here.
How often do you sail nowadays? I go to the marina almost every day. I like sitting on my boat and relaxing. I take the boat out every couple of weeks. Usually, I would go to the Bahamas. I did not do it recently, because there were a lot of covid related restrictions, which are to be completely lifted soon. We have an apartment in the Bahamas, I can always work remotely from there or from the boat. The furthest I made was Honduras. I know the Bahamas like the back of my hand. When I was younger, I traveled to the Bahamas very often. I would just simply say - goodbye work. It was long before I could do anything remotely. I am still stumbling through some old Bahamians who know me as Captain Zeb. How is Miami’s architectural styles looking like nowadays? Miami is overbuilt with very modern and at times, cold architecture, that I do not seem to gravitate to. I cannot be objective because I developed a reputation in so called more transitional style. Even though, for young customers now, we are doing a super modern style home, but then again, introduced with certain traditions, proportions, and symmetries. Majority of the clients seem to be more conservative.

North Bay Road Residence , Style: Contemporary Interpretation of Moorish Architecture
They prefer to be more traditional, but on the other hand, they like to have the interiors that are modern. We are redoing a large estate in Coconut Grove from the 1930s now. We are preserving the exterior in a traditional style, however, interiors will be very modern, eclectic, with occasional pieces of some antique furniture. I like eclectic, this sort of undesigned look. Creating this takes a lot of skills. It looks like there were certain layers of age when the interior was developing and that it was happening over the years, like some great Paris apartments, with crown molding and wall panels, where there are pieces of modern furniture. This is a very modern look for me, and it does not look over designed. It takes a lot to achieve it because it is much easier to think in a more organized way. I consider the best interior design art of eclectic mish mash where different styles click together.
Being a general contractor, working with a certain budget, I emphasize quality. Building for the sake of the square footage does not make sense. I try to sway my clients away from this.
Could you please explain further the importance of the interiors in the houses you design?
Satisfaction from a creative aspect of my life is very important. Besides the obvious sense of purpose and serenity from my family relationship with my wife and daughters, I always held a serene contact with nature, a reason that I like boating. When I was younger, I caught a fish and I saw it dying. I realized that I never wanted to cause harm if I could help it. The certain benefit of becoming older let me recognize my shortcomings and fortes, which gives me certain peace and serenity.
Being an architect and designer, I put a great deal of emphasis on interior spaces and connection with outside views and a certain comfort. When you walk in the house, and you are still lost after three minutes, you will not feel good there. There must be a certain, almost basic, legibility on how the house functions. I'm not referring to a 40,000 square foot house, but up to 8,000 square foot spaces. Otherwise, you are never going to be comfortable there.
Do your clients discuss health aspect versus home design with you? Discussion about concepts of sunlight and sense of space depends on a client. We want to steer our conversation with the client into a more spiritual direction on how they perceive the space. Some of them do not seem to be interested and are surprised that an architect would discuss it with them. Other clients come to us with very concise directions on how to address the issue.

LASWIT ART WALLS Van Gogh’s Impressionist impasto as an interior art feature The Impasto walls carries the same name as the famous painting technique used by postImpressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh, which was later adopted by the Expressionists, such as Willem de Kooning. The impasto technique consists of applying the paint on the surface in thick dabs, usually strong enough to make visible the artist’s paint strokes. And that’s exactly how the Impasto interior walls look – as if thickly painted by a brush. Since its first appearance, the Impasto technique has served multiple purposes. It makes light refract in the interior and gives the entire space a dash of expressivity. In painting, impasto was used to give a two-dimensional plane a third dimension and an almost sculptural feel.

The swirling brush strokes make Impasto vibrant with energy and make for a more colorful and beautiful interior environment. Just like Expressionist painting, Impasto is visually quite striking, and so it fits best with rather streamlined and minimalist interiors.

ILE MAISON WELLBEING
7 STEPS TO SLOW AGING by Dr. Ross Carter - the Regenerative Medicine Expert at
Hippocrates Health Institute in Palm Beach Hippocrates Health Institute is internationally renowned for its peaceful, nurturing oasis of healing and self-care, that draws thousands each year to its 60-acre campus from all over the world to transform and reconnect. Guests explore a renewing array of innovative, non-traditional, and conventional wellness services that embody the philosophy of Hippocrates healing practices, at its core - for more than six decades. WHAT IS AGING? Hippocrates experience, rooted in research, study, and dedication to the practice of healing - is about transformation. Hippocrates is that “place” missing among the many choices offered globally among the status-quo for wellness programs. At Hippocrates, state of mind, health, and well-being are viewed as synonymous when it comes to optimum health. The therapies offered at HHI can help guide you and transform your life.
Aging, defined simply, is the process of getting older with time. Biologically, it is the inevitable deterioration of physiological functions that are otherwise necessary for survival and fertility. Our cells, the basic building blocks of the body, undergo natural wear and tear but employ intrinsic means, such as autophagy, to repair themselves. However, when we age, the cells begin to break down faster than they can be repaired or replaced. An aged or weaker cell cannot divide and multiply properly and eventually functions abnormally and dies.
ALL CELLS IN OUR BODY AGE WITH TIME! Aging brings significant and visible changes in the body in terms of function and appearance. Some changes though, such as graying of the hair, are not that bad or harmful; but others can result in potential declines in senses and performance as well as an increased susceptibility to disability and many chronic diseases. Some of which include: Heart disease, Cancer, Neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. THE SLOW-AGING PROCESS Medical researchers have made tremendous advancements in the field of aging and anti-aging. Today, we not only understand the phenomenon, but we have also successfully developed methods to slow down aging and live a long and disease-free life. Many studies have highlighted that even though aging cannot be stopped, scientists are exploring the basic science behind aging (Gerontology) to understand various aspects and develop interventions. As a result of tremendous efforts in the space of gerontology, we now know for a fact that: Exercise and diet have a direct impact on life and health. Exercising daily and restricting certain diets, such as protein and those containing methionine, will slow age-related processes. Over time, proteins aggregate in the form of plaques and tangles in the cells. Preventing protein aggregation can preserve health and increase the lifespan. Men and women age differently. Exploring the underlying mechanism of aging in both sexes will help study and understand longevity better. Researchers are exploring this field and provide promising answers that will add extra years to our life that we can spend with friends and family and enjoying fulfilling activities. While aging is unavoidable, there are certain proven ways to slow down the process and add healthful years to life. However, with the information overload that exists today, figuring out what initiatives need to be taken to sustain your youthfulness can be extremely stressful and daunting.
SEVEN STEPS TO SLOW AGING & PROMOTE YOUTHFULNESS by Dr. Ross Carter
When introduced into an aging body, regenerative therapy promotes self-renewal processes in the vital organs and tissues in addition to stimulating inactive stem cells. These processes enhance repair, boost immunity, and increase energy – aspects that help the body retain its vitality and youthfulness. Stem-cell derived exosomes have also been utilized to repair aging cells. Their outstanding regenerative abilities influence cells to heal themselves and improve their strength and elasticity, subsequently slowing the onset of the aging process.
Here are seven steps, used by the Regenerative Medicine Expert Dr. Ross Carter. This will help you retain your youth and vitality. 1. GATHERING INFORMATION

What inspired you to start Wellness for Cancer?
Wellness for Cancer Visionary Julie Bach in conversation with Ilona Lee Julie Bach is the Executive Director for Wellness for Cancer, an educational program under Spa4ThePink, a charity organization with the objective of improving well-being of people touched by cancer.
My parents both passed from cancer at a young age. With my mother she was depressed from her medications and ovarian cancer – she was not thriving. We brought her in to the spa to be touched and we saw a tremendous change in her. The cancer center did too and starting sending people to us. I started wellness for cancer as a charity to gift individuals the experience of spa. How is your organization helping cancer patients and survivors enhance their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing? We run programs – Wellness Days at Cancer centers where we can see up to 200 patients and caregivers in a 4 hour period. We also launched our app to help empower individuals with mindfulness, meditation, yoga and self compassion to be better stewards of their own well-being. You have changed the way spas approach those suffering from cancer. How were you able to achieve that? I started an initiative under The Global Wellness Institute and filled the initiative with leading doctors who could help me shape the conversation on cancer and wellness. Which modalities are effective and considered appropriate based on evidence, and how the spa and wellness industry can adapt them. We then initiated pilot programs with leading spa and wellness brands to demonstrate what was possible – how to personalize wellness without labeling our clients with “cancer.” What are the facial and body treatments specifically adapted to meet the needs of cancer patients and survivors? Up to 90% of cancer patients report changes to their skin. The most common changes include dry, dehydrated, inflamed and sensitive skin.
Trained professionals know how to adapt their treatments to nourish and strengthen the skin prior, during and post treatment. We partner with leading brands that are able to personalize their facials to the presenting conditions of the skin. The massage portions of the treatment are sensitive to understanding any surgeries or damage to lymph nodes. How important is doctors involvement in after cancer healing journey? Are doctors willing to get involved ? It is going to depend on the doctor – most are really focused on killing the cancer or preventing it from growing. But there is a plethora of evidence on the need for wellbeing and wellness programs to support individuals during and after their journey. The doctors that tend to be in the epicenter of healing modalities is in Integrative Medicine. What are the most effective, natural ways to minimize the side effects on skin and body, caused by cancer therapy? This is a difficult question to answer because each person’s starting point may be different, their medications different, and their lifestyle habits are varied. It would be best to visit a trained esthetician who can look at your skin before you begin treatment and then to help you with hydration and sensitivity especially during treatment. Enhance sleep, reduced stress, using UV protection, not smoking and eating well support the skin. During chemotherapy up to 80% of individuals are nutritionally malnourished which means, there are no nutrients left to nourish the skin. Add to that the assault of medications and cancer therapies and the skin is taking a beating – internally and externally. Even if you never cared for your skin before treatment, chances are your skin will change and you will learn to care for it.
What lifestyle changes are crucial to prevent cancer recurrence? Physical Activity, Reducing Stress, Sleeping Well and Eating Well. What should cancer patients survivors do for self-care?

Like brushing your teeth, what you do every day is more important that once a week. Start with just 5 minutes a day – explore and have fun with it – get to know yourself – get to know your mind – where does it like to go, what triggers you, how you can self-regulate your thoughts and emotions? How do you define living well and what does that feel like for you. What are the top wellness destinations with cancer-oriented programs you recommend ? We have trained all COMO and Six Senses locations – these wellness destinations are known for integrating sleep rituals, cultivating well-being lifestyles in remote and quiet places. I also love Kamalaya in Koh Samui, Euphoria Retreat in Greece for their ability to go deeper into transformational healing. What is Kaleidoscope View app? I created Kaleidoscope View to help individuals learn self-care techniques that foster well being. We present breath work, better sleep techniques, meditation and mindfulness in bite size increments to help individuals explore and learn how techniques can work for them.

My vision is to help individuals recognize that they are not a victim but rather they are empowered to facilitate their own well being. They have a choice to learn tools and techniques at a cancer center, support center or even at a wellness destination. And, we are all human beings – cancer or any other life event does not define who one is but rather provides an opportunity to go inward and deeper. - Julie Bach -
“Nothing Could Be Finer” Hungry Visionary John Gary Anderson And His Automobile by Dr Edward Lee, Professor of history at Winthrop University in South Carolina.
In 1922, Detroit’s Henry Ford explained his business philosophy this way: “I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family but small enough for the individual to run and care for. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired., after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one-and enjoy with his family the blessing of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces.” These words, a clear business plan, revealed the success of Henry Ford’s endeavor. That year, 1922, Ford produced 1,301,067 automobiles. Prices were around $319 for each vehicle; in fact, in 1925 Henry Ford reduced the cost to $260. Mass production reduced the cost, and Henry Ford’s Model T was on its way to being named the most influential car of the Twentieth Century. The Model T was inexpensive, rolled off the assembly line to America’s rising middle class, and symbolized the vitality of a country prepared to impress the world. It was simple, easily maintained, affordable, and, as Ford told his management team, “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black.” By 1927, the 15,000,000 Model T Ford appeared at the entrepreneur’s Michigan factory. Henry Ford had a southern competitor, however, for a while. John Gary Anderson of Rock Hill, S.C. manufactured exquisitelycrafted automobiles from 1910 to 1925.
They came in a rainbow of colors: violet, yellow, green, blue, and white. They offered headlight foot dimmers and powered convertible tops. Anderson cars cost about $1650 for a five passenger touring car and $2550 for a sedan. Anderson’s slogan was “A little bit higher in price but made in Dixie.” As he boasted, “Nothing could be finer.” And those proud words reveal the company’s fatal flaw: it was too expensive for most Americans despite the fact that Anderson assembled a national dealer network of 150 agents. And it, indeed, was a magnificent product. Anderson, himself, was a magnificent success story. Born in 1861 in Lawsonville, N.C., the first year of the Civil War incidentally, he arrived by train in Rock Hill with his little sister in 1877. The town was a smoky, sleepy railroad village then; there were only 100 residents in 1865. The teenager had lost both parents to disease and had been sent to live with his grandparents. But, John Gary Anderson scrambled up the ladder in this New South city, a hamlet which had escaped the destruction of the war. He married the daughter of a carriage maker in 1884. He helped found the Rock Hill Telephone Company (Comporium), started a newspaper (the Journal), developed real estate, organized the local Chamber of Commerce, and helped re-locate Winthrop College to Rock Hill from Columbia. Always, the young man was moving forward. Two years after Henry Ford’s Model T appeared, in 1908. Anderson and his son, John Wesley Anderson, converted the carriage business to automobile manufacturing. Cars, not carriages, would shape the future.
In John Gary Anderson’s opinion, a welldesigned, well-made, well-marketed colorful car could speed to the head of the pack, leaving the northern competition in the dust. Certainly, the luxury of the Anderson was impressive. Photos of convertibles at Charleston’s Colonial Lake or touring cars gracing Winthrop’s campus document the beauty of the vehicles. Advertisements used words such as: “dignity,” “grace,” “power,” and “comfort developed to an unexpected degree.” To Anderson, each automobile seemed to be a work of art, produced by southern artisans, reflecting the charm of the New South-a land of bold dreams. For Detroit’s Henry Ford, there was far more emphasis on keeping prices low. My mother told me about her first Model T, black of course, costing less than $300 which did not include windshield wipers; they were $1.00 extra, if the customer wished them. Anderson was a community booster, involved in almost every organization, serving on the Winthrop Board of Trustees and presiding over the Chamber of Commerce which he reminded everyone was “more than a social club.” The telephone lines that sprouted around Rock on Anderson’s factory, Hill converged notifying him when parts arrived at the railroad depot. Eventually, 6000 Anderson automobiles made their debut, with silver fittings, satin-covered vanity seats, mechanized roofs, and superb coachwork. A large “A” graced the car’s hood. But the demise of the Anderson car was due to features like these. The Model T was much cheaper, and Henry Ford allowed customers to pay as little as $5.00 per week. Perhaps “Nothing Could Be Finer” than an Anderson car, but Henry Ford understood that “Nothing Could Be Cheaper” than one of his basic vehicles. Into the Jazz Age of the 1920s, Ford and Anderson dueled, but in 1924 an engine defect which warped the Anderson car’s engine block plagued his automobile. Capital evaporated. Farmers battled the boll weevil. And John Gary Anderson continued to believe that “Nothing Could Be Finer” than his vehicles. As one of his grandson’s told me when I was writing my book, “everything my grandfather did had to be first class.” Contrast that philosophy with the wise words of a later southern entrepreneur, Sam Walton, who explained success in four simple words: “Every Day Low Prices.”
When the company died in 1926, sold for a $53,000 tax bill, John Gary Anderson was bitter that his adopted home town had not come to his rescue. His 700 page autobiography published right before his death in 1937 is full of this bitterness. Rock Hill had abandoned him; the south had been unappreciative of this apostle of the New South’s potential. In my book John Gary Anderson And His Maverick Motor Company, I call him a “hungry visionary.” While working on that book, I had the pleasure of interviewing three of his grandsons, one of whom took me on a tour of Rock Hill in a gorgeous green Anderson car, one of only thirteen remaining. The beauty of the vehicle was still on display because the “hungry visionary” of a hundred years ago passionately believed “Nothing Could Be Finer.” Dr. Edward Lee is professor of history at Winthrop University in South Carolina.
