Turning to etymology, “catharsis “represents the concept of “purification” or “cleansing”. This thesis project, aiming to extend catharsis concept to a multi-scalar and versatile approach, consists of a series of research and design processes that address the relationship between contemporary human being, themselves, and the multiplicity of ecologies surrounding them. This approach is prompted by a recognition of the need to think and create ecosystems in their entirety, rather than isolated actuations and static artifacts. The project places emphasis on the contemporary human condition, formed by everyday overabundance of information, alienating subjects from themselves and their social environment. Our intention is to design a spatial model of catharsis able to shift understanding of what It means to be human and encourage interdependencies between human with webs of multiple entities – artificial or natural. In this schema, we are far from the opposition between subject and object, mind and matter, culture, society and nature. Within this non-dualistic framework, we try to read the space as an assemblage of artifacts and events in the city of Thessaloniki, as an active organism, and reinterpret the historically constructed artificial ecosystems and networks, in favor of new emergent hybrid natures. Our investigation and design is oriented towards the following crucial issues :

// what kind of spatial articulations can accommodate the need of contemporary subject, while decongesting and balancing their physical and mental state ? // what kind of existing references within Thessaloniki could trigger new spatial and speculative mechanisms, able to accomadate contemporary catharsis processes? // which perceptual and conceptual context could frame and support these mechanisms? // how can we incorporate values and principles from multiple systems, so as to restore lost coherence among them and activate new generative mechanisms addressing to contemporary needs?
