all is a wonderful time of year, right? The foliage is always a beautiful sight, apple orchards and pumpkin patches are in full gear, and there are events aplenty. The three-month span from August through October is arguably the busiest time of year in terms of events throughout our wonderful 21-county territory. The variety of gatherings is also impressive, because our region hosts everything from a hot air balloon festival to a food phenomenon known as Albion Chowder – where hundreds of gallons of delicious chowder sell out in an hour or so.

If you have read the Tourism Times before, you know that On the cover: this particular publication is always focused on events but we’re taking a different approach on how those events Lebanon’s Witches Night Out Photo by Jordan Jackovich are listed in this edition. Rather than include several McLeansboro Fall Festival pages of simple event listings that may or may not change McLeansboro Kiwanis Club depending on weather or other factors, we’re diving a Waterloo PumpkinFest little deeper into some of the more iconic events that have Du Quoin State Fair Harness Racing become annual staples in ILLINOISouth. Due to space, Du Quoin State Fair we obviously cannot mention every event in 21 counties so we highly recommend that you check our website for an extremely up-to-date listing of each event that is taking place in our area over the next few months. Our event calendar can be found at illinosouth.org/Events, and we also urge you to keep a close eye on social media pages for an event, community, or attraction as they often have updates for visitors if something needs to change. We’ve also included a QR code below that you can scan and it will take you right to our events calendar! We certainly hope the following content gives you a few ideas of places to visit this fall, we’d love to see you in ILLINOISouth! Our communities are undoubtedly happy to host you, and if you take pictures during your visit please use the hashtag #ilsouth. We always get excited to see and hear about everyone’s experience while they’re in our neck of the woods. Have fun out there! We make every effort to verify the information contained in the Tourism Times; however, we suggest that you call to confirm the hours of operation, rates and reservation requirements before visiting. © Copyright 2022 – ILLINOISouth Tourism illinoisouth.org 1

EVENTS GALORE! ART IN THE PARK Highland If art strikes your fancy, keep an eye out for Art in the Park in Highland! This event is slated for October 7-9, and it’s definitely one to bring the family to. Kids have the opportunity to not only make their own art, but also to purchase their own art from a children’s section of pieces donated by artists. There will be over 60 booths representing 11 different mediums for parents to shop from as well. NHRA MIDWEST NATIONALS WWT Raceway One of the biggest annual events at World Wide Technology Raceway each year is the NHRA Midwest Nationals, which is set for September 30th this year. It usually attracts a crowd of 20,000+ fans that have an awesome opportunity to interact with their favorite drivers. If speed is your thing, you should probably look into getting some tickets! LEBANON WITCHES NIGHT OUT There have to be some great Halloweenthemed events in the fall, right? Make a trip to Lebanon on the evening of Sunday, 2 2022 Fall Tourism Times

Mark Your Calendars for Fall Events in ILLINOISouth’s Western Region October 30th and you’ll find dozens of witches roaming about town…no joke. Lebanon’s Witches Night Out is held on the Historic Brick Street in town, and it’s full of fun. Many of the local shops are open with specials, and there is even a contest for ‘best cackle.’ Definitely something worth checking out on a Sunday night! MASCOUTAH HOMECOMING UND AUGUST FEST The Mascoutah Homecoming is definitely one that falls under the ‘timehonored tradition’ category. This event is now 96 years in the making, and it will certainly give you that small-town, Americana sort of vibe if that’s what you’re looking for. There are always rides, food, entertainment, and of course a parade. Check it out for yourself this year, August 5-7. BELLEVILLE – OKTOBERFEST, CHILI COOK-OFF, & METRO EAST PRIDE FEST Fall is a really busy time in Belleville, as the city plays host to three big events that draw some pretty large crowds. If you’re a fan of German heritage, we highly suggest

that you check out their 41st Annual Oktoberfest, which is always the third weekend in September. This festival gives folks the opportunity to enjoy three stages of live music, enjoy authentic German cuisine with American food as well; and participate in wiener dog races, a cornhole tournament, and enjoy carnival rides. Shortly after that, downtown Belleville will be a happening spot yet again. The Metro East Pride Fest is slated for October 1st, and it attracts thousands of people to downtown Belleville every year. The large outdoor gathering celebrates the LGBTQIA+ community, and one of the main attractions each year is a High Heel Drag Race, which is usually followed by a Pride Drag Show, featuring the King and Queen of Pride. The second full weekend in October is all about chili in downtown Belleville. The Annual Chili Cook-Off has been apart of the community for more than 30 years. It’s the biggest fundraiser of the year for many non-profit organizations, because over half the vendors are either a nonprofit organization, or a business raising money for a charity. You get to fill your belly and do it for a great cause! Western Region Events

PUMPKINFEST Waterloo

It is year number 34 for one of the more recognizable arts festivals in ILLINOISouth – Midwest Salute to the Arts! Moody Park in Fairview Heights will come to life August 26-28 for the event which features a Children’s Gallery and Creation Station, artist demonstrations, and live music. The best part is admission is totally FREE!

One of the more popular concert-based events in ILLINOISouth is held in Columbia each fall. Songs4Soldiers is a benefit concert that has helped raise over $800,000 since 2013. All of those proceeds go towards combat veterans and their families! This year’s lineup on Friday, September 9th features Everclear, Tonic, Stir, and Feel – while Saturday’s entertainment is LoCash, Alexandra Kay, and the Mighty Pines. Enjoy some awesome music while knowing it’s all for an AMAZING cause.

In the heart of historic downtown Waterloo on the second Saturday of October, you will find the streets full of people celebrating PumpkinFest. It’s an event that is truly cherished in the community, with live music, craft vendors, games, and other activities (including a bubble truck during most years, which the kiddos love). Add in the fact that local eateries, microbreweries, and boutiques are all within walking distance, and you’ve got yourself a great little Saturday. illinoisouth.org 3

MAEYSTOWN OKTOBERFEST Oktoberfest events are pretty popular in southwestern Illinois, but few are as iconic as the event in historic Maeystown. Residents gather a couple weekends ahead of time to make huge pots of apple butter that are sold during Oktoberfest, which is a sight to behold. During the event itself, over 3,000 people come to this village of 157 residents for accordion music, vendor booths, and a ton of amazing food. SPARTA STAMPEDE RODEO & GRAND AMERICAN TRAPSHOOTING COMPETITION Sparta Many events in our region attract folks from different counties and states, but

there is one event in particular that draws people from other countries. The Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships hosted at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta brings in THOUSANDS of folks for a ten day span. This year is the 123rd year for the Grand which is the largest shooting event of its kind. This year’s Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships are slated for August 3-13th.

The 34th Annual Midwest Salute to the Arts is one of the longest-running arts events in the region offering a spectacular three-day outdoor art festival in beautiful Moody Park. Featuring works from awardwinning artists, live art demonstrations, live music, tasty food & our very own interactive Children’s Creation Station and Gallery—perfect for the whole family. DU QUOIN STATE FAIR

PINCKNEYVILLE MARDI GRAS

HILL’S FORT RENDEZVOUS

Simply put, this is a big one. Sure, many folks have likely heard of the Du Quoin State Fair because it lasts nearly two weeks, and attracts tens of thousands of folks every year for concerts, racing, rides, and food. But this year is special because it is the 100th Anniversary of the Fair! “Obviously anytime you celebrate a 100th anniversary it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity,” says Du Quoin State Fair Manager, Josh Gross. “I don’t want to give too many things away but I can tell you that we are excited to increase the amount of free entertainment we have brought to the grounds,” he adds. Visitors will also notice some impressive upgrades happening at the Fairgrounds. “We are repainting, repairing mortar, resurfacing the stage, and turning back on the historic neon lights,” Gross explains. “We are also working on improving the front entrance way and a number of smaller structures throughout the grounds,” he adds. This year’s Du Quoin State Fair is set for August 26th through September 5th and is definitely one that you won’t want to miss.

Wait…Mardi Gras in October? The short answer is, yes indeed. Folks in Pinckneyville say that it started as a celebration for harvest time in the farming community, but it’s a bit of a mystery as to why it’s called Mardi Gras. This year actually marks the 100th Anniversary of the Pinckneyville Mardi Gras, so the celebration will be even more special than it usually is. It is slated for the weekend of October 29th, and in terms of entertainment, there will be a vendor fair, parades, business trickor-treating, costume contests, and a ton more.

There is a place in Bond County that immediately transports you back a couple of centuries once you step foot inside. Hill’s Fort is located on the grounds of the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville, which is host to the Hill’s Fort Rendezvous September 16-17 this year. It’s a weekend full of reenactments, cannon firing, bullet molding, blacksmithing, rope making and more.

OKAWVILLE WHEAT FEST Here is yet another tradition that is decades in the making. For 74 years, the Okawville Wheat Festival has drawn not only Okawville natives, but folks from Washington County and other neighboring counties. This year’s festivities are scheduled for September 16-18, and folks can experience washers and bags tournaments, tractor pulls (including one for just kiddos), live entertainment, and of course food. Plus, everyone here is so friendly – you’ll probably leave with a few new friends!

KINMUNDY LOG CABIN VILLAGE FALL FESTIVAL & HAUNTED TRAIL The Kinmundy Log Cabin Village in Marion County is a really cool place to check out, especially if you have someone associated with the Village give you a tour of the 12 cabins on-site. The best time to visit this area is the fall, because it comes to life with their Annual Fall Festival celebration, and their everpopular Haunted Trail around Halloween time! The Fall Festival is always the last two weekends of September, and features craft and food vendors, demonstrations, and pony rides for kids. The Haunted Trail is set for the last two weekends in October. They had a whopping 1,760 folks Central Region Events

LITTLE EGYPT FESTIVAL Salem We have talked about events that spark a sense of pride in it’s community, and the Little Egypt Festival in Salem certainly fits the mold. It is always on the first Saturday of October (October 1st this year), and people line the parade route with blankets and chairs a day before the event to save their spots. This year marks the 51st Annual Little Egypt Festival which has become known for its car show, horse show, big wheel race, food and craft vendors, and of course the parade. CENTRALIA BALLOON FEST & RAIL MONSTER CRAWL Centralia

Centralia Balloonfest Danielle Higgins 8 2022 Fall Tourism Times

The other AWESOME gathering in Centralia is downtown at Halloween time. Saturday, October 15th is one to set aside in your busy schedule, because the Rail Monster Crawl is three hours of spooky fun from 5-8pm. Everyone dresses up in their Halloween costumes, and from there the entire downtown is like a scene from a certain Michael Jackson music video (you know the one). Bring your camera for this one, for sure! CRUZ-IN THE DAM CAR SHOW Carlyle

Walk the streets of downtown Vandalia where Honest Abe walked and enjoy some delicious beverages while you’re at it. The 5th Annual Wine and Ale with Abe Streetfest offers visitors a commemorative wine or beer glass, live musical entertainment, and of course local and international wine as well as craft and domestic beer. There are also new kids activities this year for families to participate in, so mark your calendars for September 24th!

One of the most visually appealing and popular events in ILLINOISouth each fall is the Centralia Balloon Fest! This three day event draws around 30,000 people each year and consists of balloon glows, balloon flights, two live

entertainment stages, and a ton more. This is one of those events where the whole community takes advantage, including shops that have sales and restaurants and a winery where you can sit outside and enjoy the 32 balloons flying overhead while you’re enjoying a meal or beverage. Make plans to visit Centralia August 19-21 for this year’s 32nd Balloon Fest!

Another area that is always good for a few events is Carlyle Lake – the largest man-made lake in the state. To take in the beauty of some truly amazing cars while visiting the lake, you will definitely want to make room for this next event on Friday, August 12th. The Cruz-in the Damn Car Show Nationals at Carlyle Lake is slated for its 30th year, and features dozens of beautiful automobiles with live music as well. CASEY POPCORN FESTIVAL If you haven’t been to Casey to see all of the ‘Big Things in a Small Town’ yet, Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to do it! Their beloved Popcorn Festival is slated for that weekend, and it’s the 35th anniversary for the event. Those who play an instrument are encouraged to bring theirs along and join in a jam session with one of the many informal groups playing in the park. How fun!

WABASH VALLEY ART & WINE FESTIVAL + PIONEER CITY RODEO Palestine

HEATH HARVEST FESTIVAL Robinson Did you know that Robinson is the birthplace of the Heath Bar? That’s right, and each year they host folks for their Heath Harvest Fest. This annual celebration features live entertainment, a car show, a parade, toffee demonstrations and so much more. Whether you’re a yearly visitor, planning a reunion around the event, or perhaps you’re a fresh face – this iconic event on September 30th and October 1st this year is certainly one to circle on the calendar. OBLONG FALL FOLLIES Sticking in Crawford County not far from Robinson lies the little community of Oblong. They may be small, but they’re home to the largest nighttime parade in Illinois. The Oblong Fall Follies and Halloween Spooktacular Parade attract folks from hours away to witness the festivities. Aside from the parade, there

On the eastern side of Crawford County you will find Palestine, which has a couple of popular fall events itself. The Pioneer City Rodeo is always held on Labor Day Weekend, and this is the 68th year for the always popular event that features the PRCA Rodeo, a Miss Rodeo Illinois Pageant and a ton more. It draws so many folks, the population of the town quadruples! The other big gathering in Palestine is the Wabash Valley Wine & Art Festival, slated for October 1st and 2nd. It’s an outdoor event held on the four blocks of Main Street in town, and there are at least a dozen different wineries with samples and bottles to purchase. As the name suggests, there are also art and craft vendors. The great news is that money from the event goes back into improving the community – it’s already up fund a new pavilion and playground equipment for kiddos! WHITE SQUIRREL COUNT Olney If you have been to Olney or simply just heard of it, you likely know of their beloved White Squirrels. Did you know that each year they host their Annual Eastern Region Events

Squirrel Count? It’s true, the count helps track the health and population of the white squirrels while noting any additional influences that may contribute to the year’s numbers. Attendees come from all over to participate in this ‘natural scavenger hunt.’ Squirrel counters are out and about the first three Saturdays of October, and if you’d like to volunteer, contact City Clerk Kelsie Sterchi at cityclerk@cityofolney.com. FAIRFIELD PAINTOUT The Fairfield PaintOut is a Plein Air event where artists come from out of town and stay for a few days, all while painting local subjects and landscapes. Spectators can watch the artists in action and purchase their work when it is finished. 2021 was a record year for the PaintOut, with more sales and visitors than ever before in its ten-year existence. You have a few days to experience it, as the PaintOut runs from September 27th to October 1st this year! RIVERVIEW RAMBLE Mt. Carmel There are a BUNCH of running enthusiasts out there that will want to pay attention to this one. The Riverview Ramble in Wabash County is a half marathon/10K/5K event that is now in it’s second year. This year’s race is

all set for October 29th, and welcomes runners and walkers of all groups to come enjoy a course that is mostly flat and highlights their beloved community of Mt. Carmel. Make sure to stop in at some of the amazing local shops and restaurants while you’re in town, they have some great ones! ALBION CHOWDER You may not know it, but the community of Albion is ‘The Chowder Capitol of the World.’ While it’s a self-proclaimed title – they do play host to a very unique event each year simply known as City of Albion Chowder. Every local knows that it is the second Saturday in October, and almost all of them make it a point to partake. This is not a New Englandstyle chowder, and there are no clams in it. It is made in giant kettles with huge paddles to stir it. It’s really a sight. If you go, show up early, prepare to wait in line, and know that it will sell out. But man oh man, it’s so darn good!

MCLEANSBORO FALL FESTIVAL Just west of Carmi in Hamilton County, you’ll run into McLeansboro which is home to one of the more widely known fall festivals in Southern Illinois. The McLeansboro Fall Festival is put on by the Kiwanis Club in town each year and consists of a carnival – but the real draw is the music. There are always classic country artists on the Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night of the event. We’re talking about people from Sawyer Brown to Ricky Skaggs! The best part is, the concerts are all FREE…there is no entry fee. This year’s McLeansboro Fall Festival is all set for September 8-10, see you there! CARMI CORN DAYS Yet another event that has become a decades-long staple in southeastern Illinois can be found in Carmi. Simply known as Corn Days to the locals, it has all the charm of an annual small-town event. There are usually close to half a dozen different music acts, including some well-known talent – Confederate Railroad performed in 2021. There is also a chili cook-off, a cake walk, a pet parade,

Passion to Pedal

Bike Your Way Through ILLINOISouth

C

ycling has certainly become more popular since the beginning of the pandemic, as many folks picked it up as a hobby. It’s a $5.3 billion business, up 65 percent compared to 2019. If you’re someone who recently developed a passion to pedal, there are a few bicycling events this fall where you can ride your heart out. If you’re an experienced rider looking for a big challenge, Bicycle Illinois is right up your alley. This event is from August 20th-26th, and the trail travels the entire length of the state, starting in Cairo and ending in Chicago! Hundreds of folks participate each year, from Illinois as well as neighboring states. The 500 to 600 mile ride has nightly stops for sleeping in Carbondale, Effingham, Champaign, Kankakee, and here in ILLINOISouth they stop in Centralia. “Everything in Centralia is really close together, everything that you need is in a really close distance,” explains Rob Layton, Ride Director for Bicycle Illinois. “Centralia is fantastic, the people we work with there have been very accommodating, and everyone is very welcoming,” he adds. That weekend of August 20th is a popular one for cycling because the Illinois Center for Autism is also hosting 14 2022 Fall Tourism Times

their Annual Pedal for Autism event on Saturday the 20th. It is a family-friendly event that benefits a great cause and is rapidly becoming the Illinois Center for Autism’s most popular event. The ride starts and ends at the Metro East Parks and Recreation Building. Cindy Guthrie, the Illinois Center for Autism’s Special Events Planner says there are 2, 9, 26, 40, and 64 mile routes – all taking place on the Madison County Transit Trails, with start times at 7 and 7:30. Guthrie says the different routes make it family friendly and draw folks from as far as 2 hours away in each direction. “Come out and try it,” Guthrie says. “You never know, you may start a new hobby,” she adds. In Randolph County, the Tour de Tilden is now in it’s 11th year and is slated for Saturday, September 24th. There are options for 5, 10, 20 or 40 mile rides on a rural, low traffic, paved course. Entry fees are just $25 and that gets you lunch, drinks, trail snacks, and a long-sleeved t-shirt! Proceeds will benefit the Tilden Scholarship Fund so it’s a great event to mark of your list, but it’s also for a great cause. Eat Your Way Through ILLINOISouth W

e all have to eat, right? Whether you’re traveling to eat, or eating while you travel, there are so many opportunities for delicious cuisine in ILLINOISouth. Here are a few recommendations that come highly rated by visitors and locals alike. If you’re looking for even more options, visit our website at illinoisouth.org/Dine.

BURGERS HI POINTE DRIVE-IN O’Fallon

JUNE’S BREAKFAST + PATIO Shiloh

One of the newest additions to the restaurant scene can be found in O’Fallon. Hi Pointe Drive In just opened this spring, but they have already created quite a stir. Their amazing smash burgers mixed with some creative genius in the kitchen make this a must-visit.

Any brunch fans out there? If so, June’s is a fairly new restaurant in Shiloh that is definitely worth a shot. This community centered spot serves up cuisine that is made primarily with local ingredients, and they also have beer from local breweries. From breakfast sandwiches and casseroles to salads, June’s is where it’s at.

JOVALOU CUISINE & COCKTAILS Fairfield

C-Town Twist Ice Cream

Hi Pointe Drive-In

You know a place takes their burgers seriously when they have a ‘Burger of the Month.’ Jovalou offers up over half a dozen different burgers, including a couple of vegetarian options. But back to the Burger of the Month – they can feature anything from parmesan crisps to maple pecan jam. WALLY’S DRIVE-IN Breese If you have ever been to Clinton County, there’s a HIGH likelihood that someone told you about Wally’s. This place is an absolute institution simply because they have been serving up some of the best, old fashioned greasy cheeseburgers for years. They’re simple, delicious, and go great with a Ski!

SIT DOWN & ENJOY

BLIND SOCIETY Vandalia Holy cow, what a menu this place has! As soon as you look at it, there are at least half a dozen things that you immediately want to try. There aren’t many instances where you’ll find Lobster Rangoon, Brisket Tacos, and Brown Sugar Pork Chops under one roof – but Blind Society has them all, and they’re ALL delicious. TWIN RIVERS RESTAURANT Mt. Carmel What is one thing that always makes a meal better? A meal with a view…right? At Twin Rivers Restaurant in Mt. Carmel you can dine al fresco at the confluence of the Wabash and White Rivers and enjoy Food

the sights. They’re open for both breakfast and lunch, and often serve up pork burgers – which is a southeastern Illinois favorite!

become a time-honored tradition because of it. Oh, and their homemade orange sherbert is a pretty good reason to go as well!

PIZZA

SWEET TREATS

GIROLAMO PIZZERIA Nashville

OPHELIA’S CUP Olney

Anytime a restaurant is in business for 36 years, it’s a sign they’re doing something right – and that is exactly the case for Girolamo Pizzeria. This joint has become a staple in Nashville, and for good reason. They bake up a handful of different specialty pizzas, including a Chicken Bacon Ranch that is absolutely phenomenal. If you’re traveling along I-64 through our area, definitely exit the Interstate and give these folks a try.

While in Olney to catch a glimpse of the amazing White Squirrels, we highly suggest you make a trip to Ophelia’s Cup to experience their baked goods. Their desserts swap out each week, but they don’t skimp on the variety. They have been known to feature Honey Cake, Spring Floral Cake, Snickerdoodle Cake and Butterfinger Brownies all in the same week!

DOUBLE OVEN PIZZERIA Marshall There are people that say you can never have enough pizza, but the folks at Double Oven Pizzeria in Marshall are putting that to the test. They have something called ‘The Bounty Challenge.’ It’s a 28” specialty pizza that weighs in around TWELVE POUNDS. If you and a partner finish it within 45 minutes, you get 50% off the cost of the pie, and a picture on the ‘Wall of Fame.’ Are you hungry enough to try it? MIKE’S PLACE Summerfield If you’re looking for an off the beaten path food adventure, definitely look up Mike’s Place in Summerfield. It may look like a hole in the wall from the outside, but their pizza is a legit hidden gem. A sweet lady by the name of Ruth cooks up darn near every hand-tossed pie, and it is insanely good. There is a reason why Mike’s Place has a near perfect review score on their Facebook page, and you’ll see why when you visit.

C-TOWN TWIST ICE CREAM STAND Centralia One of the newest establishments to the ice cream game in ILLINOISouth can be found in Centralia. C-Town Twist Ice Cream Stand has certainly made a name for themselves in a short amount of time. They have rotating specials that feature a slew of different flavors (including a sundae challenge on Cinco de Mayo that had salsa and jalapenos). Another thing they’re known for at C-Town Twist would be the pup cup. You guessed it, special sized ice cream sizes for man’s best friend!

COFFEE CREATIONS PRESS COFFEE & TEA Trenton Located on Old Highway 50 in Trenton

there is a cute little coffee shop with some awesome specialty beverages that are sure to pique your interest. Press Coffee & Tea has the traditional coffee offerings, but their list of specialty lattes and frappes is really impressive. We’re talking about anything from Nutella to White Chocolate Pistachio, and NONE of them disappoint. COMMON GROUNDS COFFEE LOUNGE Flora Good coffee is key, but a comfortable and relaxing spot to enjoy it really puts the experience over the top. That is the type of atmosphere that you will find at Common Grounds Coffee Lounge in Flora. They get rave reviews about their lunch items as well as their mini cheesecakes in a cup – but coffee is in their name. Their 20-ounce Big Train Frappe really sticks out on the menu because it entails a frozen creamy blend of espresso, milk, and your choice of flavoring topped with whipped cream! 6:10 COFFEE COMPANY Salem We’ve seen a lot of cool things in ILLINOISouth, but then 6:10 Coffee Company in Salem came along and added to the list. What’s so cool about it, you ask? It is a drive-thru only coffee shop that used to be the old Speed Lube in town. To honor that former business, their most popular drink is named the 6:10 Oil Slick – which is a rich blend of espresso, dark chocolate, white chocolate, and half & half.

Double Oven Pizzeria

DAIRY HAVEN Caseyville There is certainly nothing like an oldschool ice cream shop where you can walk up to the window, order your treat, pay with cash only, and enjoy that delicious ice cream while chatting up a friend or family member. That is what Dairy Haven in Caseyville is all about, and they have illinoisouth.org 17

There is no question that southwestern Illinois is home to some pretty amazing history. Much of that history ties back to the Kaskaskia - Cahokia Trail, also known as Illinois’ First Road. This 60mile route dates back to 11,000 B.C. and connects you with so many opportunities 20 2022 Fall Tourism Times

to learn about the area’s history along scenic backroads and peaceful prairie land that take you through Randolph, Monroe, and St. Clair Counties. This particular time of year, the fall, is an especially magnificent time of year to explore the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail. Colorful foliage surrounds the trail along the majestic bluffs and rolling agricultural and forested landscapes.

The Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail Coalition is hosting their 2nd Annual Road Rally on September 10th, and it is the perfect opportunity to hit the road with dozens of like-minded folks to experience a DOZEN historic stops along the trail. While the Rally ends at the Monroe County Courthouse in Waterloo, the party doesn’t stop there. Coalition members say there will be live music, food specials at local restaurants, a chalk art festival, and more. Aside from the Road Rally, you can KC Trail

Valmeyer Foliage Curt Simshauser Photo Cinema

Kaskaskia River Confluence Trail

take a day or even a weekend to really take your time and experience all the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail has to offer. If you’re starting north in St. Clair County and heading south, check out the Cahokia Courthouse in Cahokia Heights. It was built in 1740 and is historically significant as the oldest courthouse in Illinois, and the only one remaining from the state’s territorial period. A little further south on the trail in Monroe County you will run into Columbia, which is home to several stops including the Shoemaker Schoolhouse Plaza. Not only is it a piece of history, but it also now serves as POP-UP SHOP, offering short-term rental space to local entrepreneurs. So go shop and check it out! From there, take a jog down Bluff Road through Monroe County and you’ll see Eagle Cliff-Miles Cemetery, home to a historic mausoleum and easily one of the best views of the river bottoms you’ll find anywhere along the trail. Another great stop along the trail is Waterloo, where you can spend quite a

while check out the historic sites and just enjoying the town. They have a couple of different breweries, Hopskeller and Stubborn German that offer up some great beer – and Stubborn German plays host to Stubbornfest each fall, so keep an eye out for that! From there, make your way to rural Monroe County for some great hiking at Salt Lick Point Land and Water Reserve, White Rock Nature Preserve, the Illinois Caverns, and more! The foliage views from the observation point atop Salt Lick Point is definitely one to bring your camera for. If you’re tired out, we most certainly recommend a stay at the Corner George Inn in Maeystown – a beautifully restored hotel from 1884. Start the next day off with a hike at Paul Wightman Subterranean Nature Preserve and Fults Hill Prairie Nature Preserve, where the latter will provide yet again amazing views of the autumn leaves along the bluffs. Fort de Chartres is a must visit because of it’s size and historic significance. This site is home to a powder magazine, which at 300+ years old is said to be the oldest building in the State of Illinois. Nearby is Prairie du Rocher which has a handful of historic sites to

visit as well. A really cool experience not far from there is taking a ride on the St. Genevieve-Modoc Ferry across the Mississippi River as a pedestrian…the views are AMAZING! Once you’re back on land, the Kaskaskia River Confluence Trail at the Jerry F. Costello Lock & Dam is a short, easy hike with up close views of the river. Speaking of views, they don’t get much better than the one you’ll find at the Fort Kaskaskia Historic Site – you can see for miles from this vantage point. Just a stone’s throw from Fort Kaskaskia is Chester, Hometown of Popeye the Sailor Man. There is a Popeye Character Trail, which allows you to go on a scavenger hunt for nearly 20 different Popeye Character Statues throughout town. The last stop would be Kaskaskia Island, which is odd – because although it’s considered Illinois, you have to cross the Mississippi River into Missouri to get there. That’s right, it’s considered an exclave – and this exclave was also the first State Capital as well as current home to the Liberty Bell of the West. It’s pretty apparent that whether you’re looking for a fall foliage trip – or just a drive to experience rich history, the Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail is just what the doctor ordered! illinoisouth.org 21

WHAT’S YOUR STORY? WITH THE MIDWEST NOMAD FAMILY

24 2022 Fall Tourism Times

What’s Your Story

W

hen it comes to traveling, we’re all storytellers. There are parts of any adventure that we love to recount and pass along to our family and friends. To celebrate those tales, we have started a new campaign in 2022 called ‘What’s Your Story?’ It’s an opportunity for those who have visited our region to share their memories, and hopefully entice readers to experience southern Illinois as well! The following story out of Randolph County comes to us from The Midwest Nomad Family, who love to explore the great outdoors. EXPLORING CAVERNS AND ROCK ART AT PINEY CREEK RAVINE IN ILLINOIS Piney Creek Ravine Nature Preserve is a bit of a secret hike. Visit this spot even on a summer weekend and you may still have the whole trail to yourself. So many don’t realize this dramatic and historic spot exists tucked deep in the farm fields of southern Illinois. Not only does the preserve feature dramatic canyons and trickling creeks, but the main claim to fame here is the biggest display of prehistoric petroglyphs and pictographs in Illinois. You can view these impressive vistas in the cool comfort of the shade provided by groves of shortleaf pines. Piney Creek is one of only two places these towering evergreens can be found in the state. Driving to the trailhead through the rural countryside, you may wonder if you are in the wrong spot. Even once you start the hike from the small parking lot, the path starts off with ho hum scenery between two farm pastures. Stick with it and the trail gets better. You will come across the sign board for the trail. Head right into the trees and cross a small bridge. Soon the trail comes to the first creek crossing. While the water level here is normally low, the rocks are extremely slick at all times. Use caution making your way across the rocks. Not long after the creek crossing, the split for the loop portion of the hike appears. You can go either direction, but we like to go left and hike clockwise in order to reach the main part of the creek and the rock art first. The trail will descend towards the creek. Off to your left you may hear the sounds of a tall waterfall plunging off a cliff edge. A

sign warns of getting too close to look at the waterfall as the edge is steep, slick, and the site of several falls over the edge. When you reach the creek area you may see a side trail off to the right. That is an unofficial trail that follows the creek and leads to a small waterfall. The marked trail crosses straight across the creek here. The rocks are not quite as slick here, but the creek can be ankle deep or more. When crossing, look for the sign on the other side of the creek marking the trail. Before continuing on the trail on the other side, be sure to explore the creek area here. Off to your left, a dramatic bluff and overhang extend over the creek. You may see a couple of wet weather waterfalls in this area as well by looking back near the trail you just descended. Taking in the view of the dramatic canyon here might give you another one of those “Am I really in Illinois?” moments. After exploring the bluff overhang and creek, return back to the main trail at the creek crossing. After climbing the bank, you soon come to a fork. Off to the right is the spur trail to the rock art. Here a short trail leads past an enchanting display of prehistoric rock art and carvings, A sign board helps explain the history and meaning of the symbols. Sadly, people have vandalized the rock art over the years and much of it is difficult to see. The trail wanders back through the forest to complete the loop. Retrace your steps back to the trailhead and marvel at the wonders you have seen in this secret ravine. If you’re looking for more to do in the area, check out Mary’s Covered Bridge, the Popeye Statue Trail, and Fort Kaskaskia in nearby Chester. (END) To read about more rural adventures in ILLINOISouth from The Midwest Nomad Family, visit their website at midwestnomads.com. If you have a story from our region you would like to share with us, we’d love to hear it! Please email us at info@illinoisouth.org.
