Established: April 27, 1790 County Seat: Belleville Named for: Arthur St. Clair, a general in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, a friend of George Washington’s, and the Governor of the Northwest Territory (1788-1802).

St. Clair County

Native-American tribes including the Cahokia, Tamaroa, Peoria, Kaskaskia, and others lived here. The first European settlers were French and established settlements at Cahokia (1699) and Prairie du Pont (present-day Dupo; settled c. 1750). Americans from the South started settlements near Turkey Hill and Ridge Prairie in the 1790s. Immigration from German-speaking Europe rapidly accelerated in the 1840s. Migration of African-Americans began in the years after the Civil War and accelerated in the 20th century. Early businesses related largely to the river. Capt. James Piggott established a ferry service at present-day East St. Louis in 1795. Migrants came for the abundant farmland and proximity to the river as an avenue of transit. Established: 1795 County Seat: Kaskaskia until 1849, now Chester Named for: Edmund Randolph, Revolutionary War Veteran.

Kaskaskia was established by French Missionaries and the Kaskaskia Indians in 1703. The French colonists built a thriving town until 1763 when the British government took control of Fort de Chartres as victors in the French & Indian War. With George Rogers Clark leading, the American Revolutionaries took over in 1778. The Immaculate Conception Church Bell, renowned as Liberty Bell of the West, rang to proclaim freedom. In 1818, Kaskaskia was made the first capital of Illinois and Shadrach Bond the first Governor. Pierre Menard was Lieutenant-Governor. The county was settled by many immigrants: the French set up windmills and the first water mill for the flour industry; fur trapping and trading was a thriving industry in the 1700s and 1800s. German settlers became known for their winemaking. The Scot Irish were abolitionists; the English brought many trade skills; and the Irish lace makers were popular with all.

Fort de Chartres becomes the seat of military and civilian government in Illinois

Established: 1815 County Seat: Albion Named for: Governor Ninian Edwards, governor of the Illinois Territory and later the state.

When the county was created in 1815, it extended north to Lake Superior. Over the years, other counties were carved out of the territory until by 1824 it was the final size of 223 sq. mi. One of the founders was Morris Birkbeck, first Illinois Secretary of State. County native, Louis Lincoln Emmerson, also served as Secretary of State of Illinois and was a Governor of Illinois.

Claim to Fame: This is one of the most consistently Republican counties in the nation. It has voted for the Republican candidate in all Presidential elections from 1856 to present, except in 1912 when the party was divided and Theodore Roosevelt won the county as the “Bull Moose” Progressive candidate.

White County

Established: February 15, 1815 County Seat: Carmi Named for: Either Leonard White, an early settler to Gallatin County and operator of the Salt Works, or Col. Issac White, who was killed in the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811

The earliest settlers followed the Big and Little Wabash Rivers to White County between 1807 and 1808. A flood of people from the Carolinas, Tennessee and Kentucky came after the War of 1812 for the rich soil, timber and game. Most early residents were Scots-Irish. The county is a mixture of wooded hills and prairies, the latter not developed until better farming equipment could turn the heavy sod. Oil was discovered in the 1930s, and two coal mines were opened in the 1980s.

Claim to Fame: James M. Robinson, U.S. senator 1831-1843; Phil Hanna, the “Humane Hangman” who assisted in over 100 executions; Col. Everton Conger, leader of the expedition which captured and killed John Wilkes Booth

Monroe County

Monroe County is truly historic ground. In 1782, the first American settlers arrived at Belle Fontaine, then part of Illinois Territory and under the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Settlers from the east were granted land in the area as payment for their services during the Revolutionary War. Monroe County lived under four flags, French, English, Virginia, and Illinois. Original settlers were French, coming to the area from Canada and upriver from New Orleans. English and Irish followed, and later Germans immigrated to the area. Monroe County was officially carved from St. Clair and Randolph Counties as a legislative act of the Territory of Illinois (before statehood).

Established: 1818 County Seat: Greenville Named for: Shadrach Bond, Illinois Territory Delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives, later became first Governor of Illinois.

Bond County

The earliest settlers arrived in 1811 from Southern states. Hill’s Fort was established in 1812 to protect settlers from Indian attacks. Prior to statehood, the northern border stretched to Lake Superior. Greenville and Ripley were some of the earliest communities in the state, and the county helped make Illinois a state in 1818. There has always been a unique mix of agriculture and industry: natural salt springs attracted early settlers; coal mining and oil production were common. The quality of the schools is a source of pride – it’s the home of Greenville University. Historically this has been a major transportation hub. The National Road and Black Diamond Trail intersect here. This was home to the St. Louis, Vandalia, and Terre Haute Railroad, later the Pennsylvania Railroad (the busiest route between St. Louis and Eastern cities). Route 40 and I-70 pass through.

THE COUNTIES:

Fayette County

Established: February 14, 1821 County Seat: Vandalia Named for: Marquis de LaFayette, French hero of the American Revolutionary War

Glaciers had at one time covered most of Illinois, including the land that would be named Fayette county. These glaciers in return left Illinois with a very rich soil. The Indians who lived in this area were not hostile, and pioneers were soon attracted to the region. The influence from the British and French, along with the eastern states, also helped shape the area. By the 1800s, railroads and the National Road connected Fayette County, and especially the second state capital, Vandalia (1819-1839), to the nearby rivers and distant eastern cities. The National Road (also known as the Cumberland Road) reached Vandalia in 1836. (adapted from Illinois Periodicals Online, Vandalia, by Brent Wagner). Abraham Lincoln began his legislative career here, and his legacy is still celebrated throughout the county.

About 1817-1818 Clear Springs Settlement, in what is now Hillsboro Township, was established by pioneers from Kentucky and Tennessee, along with a third settlement near what is now Walshville Township. In 1821, Montgomery County was formed from Bond County. The 1825 State Census listed 173 households. The first county courthouse was erected in 1823-24 at a cost of $344.08. Established: January 24, 1823 County Seat: Salem Named for: Revolutionary War Gen. Francis Marion, the “Swamp Fox”

The first permanent settlers arrived in 1811, seven years prior to Illinois’s statehood. Captain Samuel Young of Virginia and his nine-year-old son were traveling home to Tennessee after exploring Illinois when they made camp for winter near a local Indian tribe and just six miles southwest of Salem Township, the future county seat. Young returned to Tennessee to get his family and relocated here. After the War of 1812 and the Louisiana Purchase, the county grew as more settlers moved into Illinois. The county remained predominantly rural with a heavy reliance on farming, railroads and the coal industry. (familysearch.org)

Illinois was the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolishing slavery

Established: 1824 County Seat: Mount Carmel Named for: Wabash River

Wabash County was formed out of Edwards County to avert an armed confrontation between the militias of Albion and Mt. Carmel after the county seat was moved from a town near the current city of Mount Carmel to Albion. The County is named for the Wabash River, which forms its eastern and southern borders. The name “Wabash” is an English spelling of the French name for the river, “Ouabache.” French traders named the river after the Miami Indian word for the river, “Wabashike,” (pronounced “Wah-bah-she-keh”), the word for “pure white.” Much of the river bottom is white limestone, now obscured by mud. Claim to Fame: Brace Beemer, the voice of The Lone Ranger radio program; Archie Dees, forward and center with five National Basketball Association teams; Don Liddle, pitcher for the New York Giants (1952–1954);World Series champion (1954). 800-442-1488

Clinton County

Established: December 27, 1824 County Seat: Carlyle Named for: 7th Governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton, who helped build the Erie Canal

In 1805, prior to the establishment of the county, the territorial government established a post road from Vincennes, Indiana to St. Louis, Missouri, passing through the county. In 1808 a wagon road was laid out through what is now Clinton County. The road extended from the Goshen Settlement to the Ohio salt works and crossed the Kaskaskia River at Carlyle. Crossing the Kaskaskia became much easier when the bridge now known as the General Dean Suspension Bridge was built in 1859, at a cost of $40,000. Before that travelers had been forced to cross by ferry or over a mud bridge. The Illinois General Assembly set aside $20,000 for bridge restoration in 1951, and in 1953 the bridge was named after Maj. Gen. William F. Dean, Medal of Honor recipient. (Wikipedia.org) Claim to Fame: Carlyle Lake, the largest manmade lake in Illinois; Sidney Breese, circuit court judge, US senator, Illinois Supreme Court justice, Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives; Elias Smith Dennis, Union Army general in the Civil War; James Donnewald, state treasurer; Pat Jarvis, pitcher for the Atlanta Braves and Montreal Expos 800-442-1488

Perry County

THE COUNTIES:

Established: 1827 County Seat: Pinckneyville Named for: Oliver Hazard Perry who defeated the British fleet at the decisive Battle of Lake Erie in the War of 1812

In its early history, Perry County was mainly an inland pioneer outpost. Early settlers, including some Revolutionary War veterans bearing land grants, moved here from the Eastern United States. These were primarily Protestant settlers. Growth boomed in the 1850s for two reasons: construction of the Illinois Central Railroad through the eastern portion of the county, and the discovery of large coal reserves. Immigrants from Ireland, Poland, Germany, Italy and elsewhere steadily increased the population from 1850 through the 1920s. African Americans also were established in the County during northward migration following the Civil War. Mining continued to be the dominant employment sector through the 1990s. (Wikipedia.org). Claim to Fame: Du Quoin State Fair; Roy Alden (18631937), newspaper editor and Illinois state senator; Albert Brown (1905–2011), oldest survivor of the Bataan Death March; Ken Swofford, actor (Thelma & Louise, Ellery Queen); Rudolf Wanderone, billiards player known as “Minnesota Fats”; Billie Hayes, actress (Witchiepoo in H.R. Pufnstuf, Mammy Yoakam in Li'l Abner)

Jasper County

Established: December 19, 1834 County Seat: Newton Named for: Revolutionary War hero Sergeant William Jasper, who fought in the defense of Ft. Moultrie in SC and saved American prisoners of war from certain death at the hands of British soldiers.

Jasper County was formed in 1831 from Clay and Crawford counties. At that time, it was primarily an agricultural community and remains so today. As of January, 1996 there were 772 farms (average farm size is 334 acres). Crops are primarily corn, soybeans, and wheat. Other agricultural pursuits include beef cows, dairy cows and hogs/pigs. Jasper County has an area of approximately 508 square miles, and its shape is almost square. The early population were largely German farmers wanting to own their own land. The community of Ste. Marie was a French settlement. Farming was, and continues to be, the primary industry in the County.

Richland County

Established: February 24, 1841 County Seat: Olney* Named for: Richland County, Ohio, which got its name from the rich soil

Richland County was made up from part of Lawrence and Clay counties, so there were many inhabitants already established here. People came from North and South Carolina, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Pennsylvania and started churches, lumber yards, general stores, medical facilities, cigar manufacturing, a glass factory, brick making, hotels, newspapers, 2 major railroads and pork packing. Schools were opened and expanded to the college level. The Weber family started the Olney Sanitarium which provided jobs for many citizens. The shoe factory was a big business. *The city of Olney was named for Nathan Olney, then connected with the Lawrenceville bank, who never saw the town which perpetuates his memory. ILLINOISouth Tourism, 1985 - Present In 1985, Bond, Fayette, Clinton, St. Clair, Madison, Monroe, Randolph and Washington counties formed the Southwestern Illinois Convention & Visitors Bureau. For the next 16 years, the Bureau marketed their lodging, attractions and recreational opportunities to bring in visitors. In late 2001, there were administrative and financial difficulties that resulted in the Illinois Office of Tourism rescinding the state grant funding, and the Bureau was closed for a short time. The county leaders, however, again recognized the advantages of having a tourism bureau and committed their support to resurrecting it. A new Board of Directors with two representatives from each county was formed, and they hired a new Executive Director in 2002. The organization was renamed The Tourism Bureau Southwestern Illinois with a colorful logo to represent the fun and diversity of the eight counties. The healing – and growth – had begun. Over the next four years, the Tourism Bureau’s reputation for helping large and small communities increase their visitor expenditures and tax income spread. In 2006, Marion County wanted in, then in 2009, Perry County brought the total to ten counties. The growth really exploded in 2011 when the Southeastern CVB’s nine counties asked to merge with the Bureau. This brought Clay, Cumberland, Edwards, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne and White counties on board. A new name and logo were required, so The Tourism Bureau ILLINOISouth was created. Throughout our history, the members have been the driving force of our success. Today, ILLINOISouth Tourism is proud to be of service to 23 counties. In 2015 – 16, Montgomery, Clark and Hamilton joined, and in 2017, Crawford County became the most recent member. Thank you all for allowing us to showcase your cities and villages in this beautiful – and FUN – part of Illinois! 66
