Hello from Dan N

ew Year’s Greetings as we welcome 2019 and say goodbye to Illinois’ Bicentennial year 2018. What an incredible year it was! I hope you were able to experience some “historical” fun in ILLINOISouth as we celebrated our 200th Birthday!

We’re making some exciting changes this year, starting with this Visitors Guide. The information is organized by Region, then alphabetized by City/Village. The attractions, museums, shopping and everything else is all in one place. For example, when planning a trip to Salem, you’ll find everything to do there by looking in the Central Region under Salem…how simple is that! As always, the map shows which communities are in the three regions and everything is color coded. Maybe the “Did You Know” fun facts scattered through the booklet will give you some ideas. Also, we’re very proud to showcase our nine makers, creators and artisans throughout this year’s Guide. These “MADE in ILLINOISouth” crafters were recognized by the State in the “AMAZING ILLINOIS MADE” Campaign…that help make ILLINOIS thrive! Our new Website (ILLINOISouth.org) is more user-friendly, as well. I’m sure you’ll find that planning a trip to ILLINOISouth is both easy and fun! Check out our Road Trippin’ section in the seasonal Tourism Times for some incredibly fun trip ideas. Stay connected to all the latest travel info with our Tourism Times newsletter, monthly E-news, website, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram and other e-marketing – then you won’t miss a thing! We look forward to welcoming you as you make some memories and “Find your Adventure in ILLINOISouth!”

The color coding on our map indicates approximately 50 miles across each section. Watch for the colors that coordinate with the map throughout the Visitors Guide.

Original Stumpy’s Spirits

From fresh limestone well water to grain grown on the land surrounding the distillery, we source nearly all of our ingredients from our 8th generation family farm in Columbia, Illinois. Having full control over the grain we grow allows us to do what others can’t. We plant, harvest, mill, mash, ferment, and distill our spirits from grain to glass. This ensures that our products remain pure and unbroken from start to finish. Know that when you enjoy any of Stumpy’s products, you are experiencing small-batch spirits at their finest. stumpysspirits.com www.ILLINOISouth.org

Excel Bottling Company

Excel produces flavored soda using cane sugar, returnable bottles and vintage bottling equipment in Breese. The favorite soft drink, Ski, was added in 1961 and accounts for the majority of the soda produced. They are one of the few “mom & pop” bottlers left in the country, and the only returnable bottling line left in Illinois. In 2012, the owners established the Excel Brewing Company to begin making their own craft beers. Since then, they have brought hoppy, West Coast style beers to the Midwest, as well as traditional German-style lagers. www.excelbottling.com www.ILLINOISouth.org

St. Nicholas Brewing Co.

Since the 1800’s, the St. Nicholas Hotel has been a landmark in Du Quoin. The building was severely damaged in a fire, but a restoration in 1879 allowed it to continue as a premier hotel in Southern Illinois. However, by 2005 it had been abandoned and was at risk of being demolished. Fortunately in 2009, it was recognized as an historic site and a second renovation began. Five years later, the St. Nicholas Brewing Company opened its doors as a microbrewery and restaurant. All the beer is brewed in house and paired with your favorite pizzas and sandwiches. The brewery offers tours on the first and third Saturdays of the month at 2:00 & 4:00 pm (large groups can reserve other days/times). The tour includes tasting four brews and a souvenir glass ($10/person 618-790-9212). www.stnicholasbrewco.com or Facebook DONNELLSON RECREATION: Orchards Stoecklin’s Orchard This U-Pick orchard’s season begins in late May with gooseberries. They are passionate about the quality of the farm, milk and products they make, and are pleased to share that passion with you and your family. They handcraft only the highest-quality artisan and farmstead cheeses, and many other products like fruit & whey ices, primarily grass-fed beef, clover honey, and more.

While visiting the farm, read about the family and cows and plan a visit to the country store, or enjoy the convenience of ordering online. In addition to a la carte cheeses, there’s a cheese of the month club and many creative gift box pairings, or create your own custom combination. S.D. Meadows Folk Art Gallery

Located in a restored 1900s storefront along the Lincoln Heritage Trail in Palestine, a self-taught artist, Steve Meadows, opened his gallery 30 years ago. Originally he made mostly brightly colored and fantastic wood carvings, but fifteen years ago, Meadows began focusing on what he calls “Junk Art or “Recycled Art.” He refers to his shop as “A gallery outside the box. Original, one of a kind folk art pieces and a fun selection of collectable items, primitive furnishings, pottery and accessories.” Find the Gallery at 217 S. Main St., Palestine, on Facebook or 618-586-5242.

Mullen’s Dressing

After serving as a cook in Europe during WWII and returning home to perfect his “French sauce” (the basis for the current Imitation French dressing), John D. Mullen opened his manufacturing and bottling plant in Palestine in 1948. Mullen ran the profitable and fast-growing business until 1963 when it was purchased by new owners. Ever since the company has adhered to the quality standards set by the founder and now, 70 years later, are still making the dressings from his original secret recipes. Believe it or not, they have customers living out of the area who order the dressing, glazes and sauces by the case. Find them on Facebook @mullensdressing, 618-586-2727 or mullensdressing.com.
