Land of Lincoln

Yes, Abraham Lincoln slept here! Illinois’ second capitol, the Vandalia Statehouse, is a significant site for learning about the 16th President’s early career. Lincoln spent much of his early years as an attorney and a state legislator at this building. History oozes from every floorboard and piece of furniture. “I got chills when I stood on the same floor where he walked into the House of Representatives chamber,” said a visitor. “I half expected to see a young Abraham run down that curved staircase after attending a session.”

Early Settlers

Vandalia honors the young Lincoln’s early years and legacy at places all over town. Check out the Lincoln Storyboards that tell many little known stories about him. Visit the Fayette County Museum for artifacts and memorabilia from those days, including the “froe” he used to scrape bark off cut logs. Be sure to stop in at the National Road Interpretive Center where a lifesize President greets visitors. Across the street take a seat next to him in Lincoln Park. See our Bring Your Camera section. Bonjour!

In the late 1600s, French traders, farmers and missionaries were the first Europeans to settle the Illinois Country. They built the town of Cahokia by the Mississippi River across from St. Louis in 1699. Kaskaskia soon followed in 1703 and was named the first capital of the Illinois Territory in 1809 and the first state capital in 1818. Kaskaskia is now an island in the Mississippi River, but the Kaskaskia Bell Shrine and the Liberty Bell of the West are still on display there. The bell was rung as the island was captured from the British during the Revolutionary War by Col. George Rogers Clark and his “Long Knives.” Kaskaskia Island - 618-859-3741 6

Believe it or not, there was a time when Cahokia was a larger city than St. Louis. A visit to the Cahokia Courthouse State Historic Site is a great way to understand its importance as the center for political activity for over 100 years. Built as a home in the French vertical log style, it became the Courthouse in 1793. Lewis and Clark made this their headquarters at the beginning of the Corps of Discovery journey in 1804.

107 Elm St., Cahokia 618-332-1782

In between the two communities, the first (1719) wooden Fort de Chartres in Prairie du Rocher became the seat of government and the military for the region. Today the 1750 French Colonial fort is being rebuilt on top of the original stone foundation. Nearby is the home of the first state lieutenant governor, French Canadian Pierre Menard, who served from 18181822. See our Adventurous Road Trips for the Kaskaskia Trail! KCTrailIllinois.org;

fortdechartres.us Tradition in Crawford County has it that the French were the first settlers in and around Palestine. They reportedly found an old Frenchman named John LaMotte living near the

prairie and running a trading post in 1678. Not much is known about him, but his name lives on in the LaMotte Prairie, LaMotte Creek, E. Lamotte St. and

Fort LaMotte. The Fort was built around the time of the War of 1812, and offered protection from Indian attacks to the 26 settlers and their families. Although none of the original Fort has survived, a reconstruction featuring a stockade, two story block house and small log cabin is near Leaverton Park. Facebook;

Herzlich Willkommen!

Although the City of Belleville’s name is French for “beautiful city,” most of the early settlers came from Germany. By 1870, the population of the city was 90% German. This strong German heritage has been preserved in three historic districts and by the St. Clair Historical Society

Museums. Many of the neighborhoods and landmark buildings are in or near downtown, which has undergone major renovations along Main Street. (Belleville has the distinction of having one of the longest Main Streets in the United States at 9.2 miles). The rejuvenated downtown boasts the County Courthouse, eclectic shops, restaurants, a theater and other businesses branching out from the Public Square (which is actually a roundabout with a beautiful fountain

as the centerpiece). Annual festivals like Octoberfest, the Chili Cookoff and Art on the Square bring thousands of visitors to the city. stcchs.org; Belleville.net

Jacob Maeys founded Maeystown in 1852. The original settlers were German immigrants. Today, 60 structures including Maeys’ log house, the original stone church, the stone bridge, Zeitinger’s Mill, and various outbuildings, barns and smokehouses are still there. The entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. Georgia Mae’s General Store, the Corner George Inn and other businesses and restaurants occupy some of the original structures. Tours and several annual events are a good way to experience the village. Facebook; maeystown.com

Driving through Clinton County, notice how the towns are all about five miles apart. That was a one-day drive in a horse drawn wagon in the 1800s when German families were settling this area. They built beautiful churches, barns that are still standing, and planted the rich soil. As a place got crowded, they loaded the wagons and moved on: Centralia, Germantown, Beckemeyer, Bartelso, Carlyle, Breese, Aviston, Albers, Damiansville, Trenton. The county is home to Carlyle Lake, the largest (26,000 acres) man-made lake in the state. Facebook; visitclintoncounty.com, 800-442-1488 Highland began as a Swiss settlement in the early 1800s, then was named by later German immigrants. It is the oldest Swiss community in Illinois, but much of the population also has German roots. Area festivals celebrate both heritages. Schweitzerfest on the Downtown Square in June honors the Swiss ancestry with food, music, games and more. At the annual August Kirchenfest, German food (don’t miss the meal cooked in the massive Bavarian Skillet), music, beer, dress and so much more is served during the three-day event. Louis Latzer, founder of the Pet Milk Co., lived here. His home was state-of-the-art in the early 1900s with electric lights and indoor plumbing. Homestead Harvest Days, which showcases farm history, living history groups, artisans, food and more, is held here in August. Facebook; highlandilhistory.org According to local history, the Village of Millstadt was begun in 1836 with a single German barn raising. As more German settlers arrived, they built homes and businesses, and many of the 19th century brick buildings have been well-preserved. They are easy to find on a walking tour of the village. Many of the current residents are direct descendants of the original German settlers and can share their stories. Villageofmillstadt.org 618-476-3696 More history can be found at illinoisouth.org

The theory is that people naturally have a dominant side of their brain. Left-brained people are more methodical, logical and analytical. Those who are right-brained are more imaginative, creative and artistic. So, are all people who excel at golf, which uses statistics like yardage, par and estimating the distance to the hole always “left brained?

Right Brain The Hettenhausen Center for the Arts McKendree University Lebanon, 618-537-6863 A mixture of drama, dance, speakers and concerts

late 2014. With a chip on his shoulder, and something to prove,

David tapped into his “All Killer. No Filler.” culture and mentality to create BEAST Craft BBQ Co., Belleville Sandusky has

earned several honors, while BEAST has raked in a “truck-load” of
