Hello from the team at Discover Downstate Illinois!
As you may have seen by now, our bureau rebranded in January of 2023 to Discover Downstate Illinois (formerly ILLINOISouth Tourism). While our identity is different, our commitment to promoting the many great things our region has to offer remains the same. If you’re an avid reader of the Tourism Times, you’ll notice a slight change. We have expanded this publication to run through the end of August, and then we will be combining the Fall and Winter editions into one publication, running from September through December.
Another aspect of the Tourism Times that we’re expanding is our digital offering. Soon you will be able to go to our website (downstateil.org) and click on the ‘Tourism Times’ link displayed at the top with the other menu items. That portion of our page will have exclusive editorial and video content that you will not be able to find in the printed version. We highly encourage everyone to keep an eye out for that, as we strive to make our publications more accessible for everyone!
We welcome you to Discover Downstate Illinois this summer because big things are in store! The second annual Enjoy Illinois 300 NASCAR Cup Series race will be at World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison, which will drive tens of thousands of racing fans to our awesome region. While you’re here, take a trolley ride around Casey and check out many of the World’s Largest Things, including the World’s Largest Golf Tee – a record that turns TEN YEARS OLD this year! Remember, while you’re exploring our neck of the woods be sure to tag us in any social media posts you make, or use #DownstateIL We love to see what you’re up to!

CELEBRATE
LIKE THE LOCALS
Each summer month provides something a little different that you can discover in Downstate Illinois. One weekend you could be in Sparta watching thousands of competitive trap shooters from all around the world, and another weekend you may find yourself in Centralia watching dozens of hot air balloons take to the sky! Here is a month-by-month breakdown of some annual events that are crowd favorites in our neck of the woods.
MAY
Not many people know that there is a sailing club right here in Downstate Illinois, but there certainly is. The Carlyle Sailing Association invites folks out for a free event each year called Try Sailing Day. This year’s event is May 14th from 10am-2pm, and gives children and adults alike the opportunity to get on a sailboat and try their hand at the sport.
JUNE
If music and barbecue are more your speed, head to Mt. Carmel for Wabash Roots N Que on May 20th. This event is now 25 years in the making and will give you all the small-town Americana vibes you’ll ever need.
The summer months are great for outdoor concerts, and the Village of Shiloh certainly takes advantage. They host Music in the Park at Klucker Hall starting on May 10th with acts scheduled every other week through July.
World Wide Technology Raceway is a racing mecca this time of year, and it all starts with the NASCAR Cup Series Race the weekend of June 2-4. The Confluence Music Festival returns with the racing action as well, featuring headliner Dierks Bentley. WWTR also plays host to the Summer Fire & Speed Spectacular, Formula Drift, and the NTT INDYCAR Series throughout the summer.
The population of Prairie du Rocher more than triples each year during the Fort de Chartres Rendezvous. Thousands of visitors flock to our area for the event which features everything from shooting competitions to music and dancing. It’s the largest gathering of its kind in the Midwest and is slated for June 3-4.
The City of Highland celebrates their Swiss heritage during Schweizerfest, which is on the calendar for June 9-11. If you’re a fan of carnival rides, games, food, entertainment, and parades –this is the celebration for you.
It’s a milestone year for Heritage Days in Okawville, as they celebrate the 41st year of the gathering. This event is true to its name, as heritage is key. Folks get to try their hand at churning butter, kneading bread, and hand-cranking ice cream. It’s always held the weekend before Father’s Day in June!
The third Tuesday in June is the Porta Westfalica celebration in Waterloo. It’s all about German heritage on this day, as Waterloo celebrates its Sister City status with Porta Westfalica, Germany. We’re talking German music, food, and even a parade – all taking place downtown around the Monroe County Courthouse.
Another unique event in our region is the Summer Hootenanny in Oblong. An official date was not set as of print time, but it’s usually held in the last week of June. Visitors can experience everything from a fishing rodeo to a disc golf tournament and even a rubber duck race!
The 4th of July is celebrated by several different communities in Downstate Illinois including Mascoutah, Columbia, Salem, Nashville, Mt. Carmel, Robinson, and Olney. Many folks flock to Carlyle Lake for the 4th of July Dam Jam & Fireworks, which is set for July 1st this year. Another popular venue on the 4th is Malcolm W. Martin Memorial Park in East St. Louis. This is the perfect venue to watch fireworks light up the sky right over the Gateway Arch!
Another local community that celebrates their German heritage each summer is Hoyleton. Hobraufest is in its 55th year and will include several activities, in particular a 5K run/ walk that awards cash prizes and beer (for those of age) at the finish line. Mark your calendars for July 7-9, 2023.
AUGUST
One of the longest running events in our region is the Mascoutah Homecoming und Augustfest, which is entering its 97th year. It’s always held the first weekend of August, and the parades for this event are always massive, with one on taking place on Saturday night and another on Sunday evening. Mix those with live entertainment, a fashion revue, and tractor pulls to really have the true Mascoutah Homecoming experience.
When you think of iconic events in Downstate Illinois, the Du Quoin State Fair probably comes to mind immediately. This event is entering its 101st year and has everything you’re looking for in a State Fair – a midway with food and games, a petting zoo, and live entertainment in the Grandstands.
The American Thresherman Association’s Annual Show is another event that is an absolute staple in Perry County. Experiencing the sights and sounds of old steam engines, watching blacksmiths and rope makers, it’s all a wonderful trip back in time. Check it out August 16-20 at the Perry County Fairgrounds!
Jasper County is home to an event that serves up food and beverage for a great cause. The Cork & Pork Festival in Sainte Marie has raised over $188,000 in the last 8 years for local groups and organizations. Arguably the most popular aspect of Cork & Pork is their Jeep Run, which visits a handful of establishments. Check it out on July 8th!
Hundreds of folks visit Red Hills State Park in Lawrence County during the last Saturday in July for the always entertaining Uncorked Festival. For just $15 admission, folks get a commemorative wine glass and five tasting tickets to enjoy vino from local wineries.
Car cruise, check. Train rides, check. Tractor pulls, check. There is a ton to experience during Farm Heritage Days at the American Farm Heritage Museum in Greenville. If you want the younger generations to see how life used to be, we highly recommend making a trip this July 28-30.
Our friends at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta are set to host thousands of folks for the Grand American World Trapshooting Championships August 2-12. It is the largest shooting events of its kind, and is fun to experience even as a spectator.
An absolute fan favorite that draws 30,000 people to our region year after year is Centralia’s Balloon Fest. What’s better than watching these hot air balloons take to the skies in the morning and then light up the night with a balloon glow in the evenings? The best part is, a simple five-dollar bill pays for your admission wristband for all weekend! It’s slated for August 18-20 this year.
Trenton Fest is a fun event in Clinton County that is actually a fundraiser for the Trenton Park Boosters. This two-day event has recently been the third weekend in August, and features live music, a carnival, and a regional favorite…cornhole tournaments!
All About Art
in St. Clair County
There’s so much to discover when you’re exploring Downstate Illinois, but some of our favorite annual events year to year are the local art fairs. While many of the art fairs in our region take place in the fall - be sure to keep an eye on our Events page - there are two fairs in St. Clair County that are happening this summer! Read on to learn more.
Midwest Salute to the Arts – Fairview Heights
Celebrating its 35th year, Midwest Salute to the Arts is happening August 25–27. Located in Moody Park, this rain or shine event started in the 1980s and has thrived with the help of volunteers ever since. Artistic mediums include ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, painting, sculpture, and more. Along with the opportunity to purchase various artwork, there will be live art demonstrations, entertainment, a children’s creative station where kids can create and take home their own art, and much more! There is something for everyone at this event. Don’t believe us? Head over to Fairview Heights this August!
Art on the Square – Belleville
Located in Belleville, Art on the Square is a juried art fair that is free to the public and happens annually the weekend after Mother’s Day – May 19–21. Proceeds from the fair are used to promote arts in southwestern Illinois. This year, Art on the Square will feature art from over 100 different artists in mediums such as ceramics, digital/graphic design, glass, mixed media, and more. Annually, Art on the Square draws 60,000 visitors to Belleville. Located right by the Veterans Memorial Fountain in Belleville, you are just steps away from unique shopping and dining experiences on Main Street; this is an event you won’t want to miss.

People love ice cream, there is no denying it. Statistics show that the average American consumes about 20 pounds of ice cream every year. That equals approximately four gallons of ice cream a person. So, it should come as no surprise to us that when we put out the call on social media for suggestions about the focus of our annual Bracket Challenge in March, ice cream was the cream of the crop (pun intended).
WEALL SCREAMFOR
Winner of the 2023 Ice Cream Bracket! Dairy Dee in SumnerOur Bracket Challenge – Ice Cream Edition started with a bang. We had over a thousand different people comment with suggestions of ice cream shops they’d like to see in the competition. Once the participating establishments were announced, another wave of excitement came from the owners of each ice cream shop. Many of the establishments involved in the Bracket Challenge took to their social media pages early and often, encouraging their followers to watch our page in order to vote.
“Our loyal customers have always been enthusiastic supporters of our shop,” says Marilyn Adamson, General Manager of the Dairy Dee in Sumner. “We would hope that their enthusiasm will translate to the ice cream bracket challenge. Their repeat business has allowed us become a destination. We like to say, ‘we are on the way home from everywhere.’ All that and 8 soft serve flavors everyday doesn’t hurt,” Adamson adds.
One of the several things that we have learned from doing our Bracket Challenge competitions is that they drive economic development. Yes, it’s great that we pick up a ton of followers and engagement on our Facebook page, but the best part is that our local business owners are REALLY reaping the benefits. People will absolutely travel for food if it’s something they want to try and have heard good things about. We have had dozens of people tell us that they actually print out the brackets and use them as a checklist — our friends at Chuck’s Place in Salem can attest to that. During the Bracket Challenge – Burger Edition, their 14 tables were constantly full and 10 of the 14 were usually from folks who came from an hour or more away. Chuck’s Place had some of their highest sales days ever during the competition, and that kind of response is EXACTLY what we like to see for our communities!
“We are hoping the Bracket Challenge will bring more exposure to Red Bud in general,” explains Kyle Winkelman, Owner of Sling N’ Scoops in Red Bud. “We routinely encourage customers to visit the many restaurants and shops that Red Bud has to offer, then grab ice cream before you head out.”
In the end, the Bracket Challenge – Ice Cream Edition was another big success. There were over 43,000 votes cast in a three week span, reaching hundreds of thousands of folks on social media. Dairy Dee out of Sumner won this year’s competition, with Dairy King in Clinton County coming in second. Although the competition is over, the fun part is up to you this summer. Our challenge to you is to take the next several weeks and make a point to visit one ice cream shop a week before many of them close in the fall. Not only will it make your taste buds happy, but you’ll be helping out locally owned businesses. What’s better than that?
If you’re looking to enjoy great food while also soaking up the warm weather, we have a lineup of food trucks just for you.
Clara B’s Kitchen Table has a storefront inside of LongStory Coffee in Belleville, but they also have a portable truck that you can often find in St. Clair County. They prioritize fresh, local ingredients for their popsicles and have a rotating menu throughout the year that always includes fruit-based, cream-based, and specialty popsicles. This unique truck travels around Clinton County and beyond.

It’s our job to make visiting Downstate Illinois simple and fun, so we took the liberty of putting together a two-day itinerary of experiences you’ll remember from our Western Region. Be sure to pack some comfortable clothes and an appetite, because we have some outdoor adventures and phenomenal eateries on this list!
Day One:
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so roll into our region early and start the trip off at June’s Breakfast + Patio in Shiloh. If you have children along with you, go have a ton of fun at Urban Air Adventure Park in Fairview Heights. If you’d rather take it easy, then visit Gateway Classic Cars in O’Fallon. Their showroom is full of not only classic automobiles but some exotic options as well! Lotawata Creek is a great place to fill your belly with everything from burgers to comfort food, but beware, their portions are gigantic – you won’t leave hungry! From there, you can head to the Downtown District of O’Fallon and do some shopping. There is a comic book and video game shop, a pet boutique, a chocolate shop, and much more. Summer is known for baseball, so spend the evening at GCS Credit Union Ballpark for a Gateway Grizzlies Minor League Baseball game. They’re home to the ‘Best Burger in Baseball’ which is a cheeseburger on a grilled Krispy Kreme donut.
Accommodations
Head 10 minutes south of GCS Credit Union Ballpark to rest your head at the Hampton Inn in Columbia before starting on day two.
Day Two:
Again, we cannot emphasize the importance of a delicious breakfast and Proving Grounds
Accommodations
Rest your head at Four Points by Sheraton in Fairview Heights before hitting the interstate for your drive home the next morning.
Coffee Roaster and Café in Columbia is well worth a visit. Downtown Columbia is also a great shopping spot with boutiques, a shop for pets, and a bakery! If you’re of age, Stumpy’s Spirits & Distillery offers up an amazing tour of how their rum, vodka, and whiskey is made. From there, head to Belleville and have some fun on Route 15. Notable stops include the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows, The Edge for some laser tag and go-karts, and pick-your-own produce opportunities at both Eckert’s and Braeutigam’s Orchards. If you’re hungry again, Beast Craft BBQ in Belleville is an award winning eatery that may have the best pork steak you have ever eaten – we’re serious. Cap off the night with a movie under the stars at Skyview Drive-In, one of just 300 drive-in theaters left in the entire country!
Gateway Classic Cars Skyview Drive-In Maddie Kitchen Gateway Grizzlies Stumpy’s Spirits Eckert’sIt’s time to discover the Central Region of Downstate Illinois! History buffs will love this one because we have included stops that feature Abraham Lincoln, amazing art, and possibly the quirkiest museum in existence. There is also a distillery, some rodeo action, and all-youcan eat crab along the way – so be sure to have a camera handy!
Accommodations
Day Two:
Start the day out right with a caffeinated beverage from 6:10 Coffee Company, a drivethru coffee shop that used to be a Speed Lube! Make your way south to our friends at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt. Vernon. This 33,000 square foot facility has four galleries, an interactive family learning center, and a performance hall. After a couple hours exploring, head west to Hoyleton – home of Kretzer’s Grill and Bar. While Kretzer’s has about anything you could possibly want, they have become a food destination because of their all-youcan eat crab legs! From there, travel south to Pinckneyville – which is home to two awesome museums. The Perry County Jail Museum gives you the opportunity go inside the old jail cells and take pictures with the art that former inmates created. Just across town, the Illinois Rural Heritage Museum has 17,000 square feet of exhibit space with interactive displays and exhibits to demonstrate rural lifestyle from 1850 forward. For a great dinner and a couple beers, we highly recommend a trip to St. Nicholas Brewing Company in Du Quoin.
Day One:
The first stop is at the DeMoulin Museum in Greenville, just off Interstate 70. Their collection of old school lodge initiation devices is utterly impressive. City of Salem Celebrates a Historic Occasion!
It’s not every year that you turn 200, right? Marion County and its County Seat, the City of Salem are celebrating their Bicentennial this year. Since it was established in 1823 Salem has had several claims to fame. During the drought of the 1820’s in central and northern Illinois, wagon loads of folks traveled to this area to obtain food and grain for themselves. This was compared to the Biblical story of Israel going to Egypt to purchase grain, so Salem became known as the “Gateway of Little Egypt.” Salem is also the hometown of William Jennings Bryan, who ran for President three times! Another important note is that the G.I. Bill of Rights was born in the American Legion in Salem in 1943.
To celebrate this historic occasion, there will be several events taking place on the weekend of June 30th and July 1st this year. The festivities will kick off on Friday night with a Community Band Concert at the high school. On Saturday visitors will experience a 5K race, a sand volleyball tournament, historical presentations and re-enactments, live music, and food trucks throughout the day. For up-to-date details, keep an eye on the City of Salem, Illinois – Municipality Facebook page. Happy Birthday, Salem!
