This farm has been in the Braeutigam family since 1831, but the orchard wasn’t planted until 1935 by Rollin Braeutigam. A few years later, his son and daughter-in-law, Lester and Marie, helped him take the fruit to market in St. Louis. However, the market only wanted green fruit, not their beautiful ripe peaches. Fortunately, people here didn’t mind traveling the mile or so to the farm for the sweet, tree-ripened fruit. Today, Braeutigam Orchards is still family-owned and operated by the sixth and seventh generations with the eighth generation in training. The first fruit trees were planted by Henry Eckert in 1890 on what is now the Eckert Belleville Farm. The first retail farm stand was opened on the side of the road by Alvin O. Eckert in 1910. Today, the retail operation includes the Orchards, Country Store, Country Restaurant and Garden Center that are operated by the sixth and seventh generations of the family. Open all year, every season is highlighted by special events for families to enjoy. This fall, the Pumpkin Jamboree has live entertainment, delicious festival foods, children’s activities, pumpkins and much more. Plan to bring the whole family to the Jamboree. Not far from Belleville, the Eckert’s Fun Farm offers a wide variety of activities this fall. The corn maze (Friday - Sunday), Jack-O-Lobber pumpkin cannon, carnival rides, petting farm, Haunted Hayride, jumping pillow, 70-foot mineshaft underground slide, Fort Eckert playground, live shows and more are all included in the admission fee. Oh, yes, there are also pumpkins for sale!

Relleke Farms was founded in the late 1800’s providing homegrown produce to local markets. More than a century later, they still supply produce in season to markets like Dierbergs as well as at their farm. Every weekend in October, Relleke Farms has a major Pumpkin Festival. Lots of food stands, arts and crafts, hayrides, petting zoo, face painting, camel and pony rides and live music are highlights of the event. The market, where you can buy pumpkins, is open during the week also and sells squash, straw, corn stalks and other fall decorations. School groups can make reservations for weekdays. Gary and Pat Grissom have been cultivating their orchard since 1963. They started with apple and peach trees, but now include pumpkins on their 70 acres. Families can walk through the orchard to see the farm animals and produce. Usually, they pick the pumpkins to sell, but this year they are planning a hayrack ride with pick your own pumpkins. Four years ago, this field of pumpkins was planted in an unused paddock. The Shawver family had downsized their horse farm, and their daughter, who is a teacher, suggested it. When the crop came in, word about pumpkin picking spread at her school and beyond. Every year more attractions are added, and the crowds have grown. Today, hundreds of people come to find the perfect pumpkin, take a scenic hayride, enjoy crafts, pumpkin and face painting, a bounce pad and an outdoor race track. There’s even an indoor arena with animals to pet and a slide and corn pits that keep kids entertained for hours. Stop by the Country Store for goodies and satisfy everyone’s hunger at the Snack Shop (wood-fired pizza’s on the menu this year). Go on a Culinary Adventure The aroma of ribs, brisket, pork or chicken slow cooking in a smoker makes your mouth water – even if you didn’t think you were hungry. Lately it seems independent barbecue restaurants are becoming very popular all across ILLINOISouth. Whether it’s in a small town or a larger city, these establishments each have a unique style and flavor that draws hungry customers from miles around. One proof of how good they are is in the awards they’ve earned at BBQ competitions all over the country. The best proof, however, is in the stellar reviews from barbecue lovers everywhere. In the Western Region, Beast Craft BBQ Co. in Belleville stays busy from the minute they open until the meat is gone. The busy counter-serve nook has a few tables and does a heavy carryout business. They serve generous BBQ plates & sandwiches, plus house made sauces, delicious sides and craft beers. Pit Master and Owner David Sandusky left the fine dining world to open Beast. He has earned several honors and won a lot of awards, including “Best BBQ in Illinois” by Food & Wine Magazine, and named one of the “Top 33 BBQ Joints in America” by Thrillist. A few miles south in Millstadt, Smokin K’s BBQ & More offers quality, affordable food to go along with friendly, pleasant and efficient service. Their signature items include pastrami, pulled pork, ribs and brisket along with homemade sides such as potato salad, slaw and macn-cheese. Top it off with one of their unique desserts! Smokin K’s is registered with the Kansas City Barbeque Society and has won numerous awards over the years at BBQ competitions throughout the country. Donna and Terry Reinhardt have enjoyed cooking for many years. Donna grew up in the kitchen with her mother and grandmother, and Terry, who has always loved to BBQ, started doing it professionally in 2009. In 2013, the duo joined forces when Terry asked his friend and coworker, Donna, to help him with a competition. Since then, they have participated in and won numerous competitions, catered parties and events, and even got married. They wanted to create a place where they could combine their love of food, friends, and family (as well as good drinks) - and thus, The Burnt End in Red Bud was born!
Word on the street is that Anthony Hass and Brandon Bauza were backyard barbecue aficionados whose friends and families encouraged them to open a restaurant. So they did! They rehabbed a downtown Waterloo building next door to the Stubborn German Brewery and opened Shorty’s Smokehouse. “We wanted our place to serve barbecue like the old school butcher shops used to do,” Anthony said. Their best sellers are brisket, turkey and ribs. Patrons can dine in, or get a tray of food to take next door to the brewery. Shorty’s also sells their brisket to the Hopskeller Brewery for their pizza, and sells pork rinds and pulled pork to other outlets in the area. Anthony says they “spread the wealth” and have a chance for folks who haven’t been to their restaurant to sample the food. Wicked Smoke BBQ in Waterloo is a favorite with locals, but has also impressed out-of-towners who stumbled on the place while visiting. Adam B. posted this review, “I’m spoiled with ribs as my dad’s recipe is my favorite and I rarely find some that come close. The ribs here were cooked perfectly and the rub and sauce was top notch. The fried okra was also cooked perfectly and seasoned with something magical. My daughter had the Wicked Fries and couldn’t say enough about the pulled pork and the taste of the fries themselves.” Adam lives 9 hours away, or he’d be there all the time! A Fine Swine BBQ restaurant & catering company has two locations in ILLINOISouth’s Central Region – in New Baden and at Governors Run Golf Club in Carlyle. They feature their championship BBQ from the 2015 Illinois State Champion BBQ team. Pitmaster, David Stidham, says, “We are very proud to serve our community fresh, championship quality barbecue with our traditionally authentic low & slow methods

Open for lunch, dinner and drinks, Deep South BBQ in McLeansboro has attracted a very faithful following. Comments like, “[I] eat here at least a few times a month. Great food and atmosphere! Haven’t been disappointed yet,” show why this is a really popular place. Every day the menu includes BBQ nachos, pulled pork and pizza. Thursday’s are for wings, Friday’s for fish and Saturday nights are baby back ribs. Call for daily specials. Backyard BBQ is the place in the Eastern Region to get delicious food, fast friendly service, a large selection of smoked meats, homemade sides and an assortment of desserts. Drinks include milk shakes or a cold beer! This is a family restaurant with kids’ menus and something everyone will enjoy. Parking is available in the back and there’s a drive-up window also. Some exciting things are happening in downtown Granite City this year. Visitors will notice a couple of new businesses including Novel Ideas Boardgamery. The Boardgamery is attached to the already existing Novel Ideas Bookstore & More but offers folks a unique way to pass the time. You can grab one of their specialty coffee drinks, then choose from 20 rotating flavors of cereal to snack on, then sit down with one of their 400 board games and have some fun. There is also a vinyl record shop within the business, as well as a studio with different art exhibits which also plays host to an ‘Unplug and Play Acoustic Music Series.’ For more information on the music series, as well as upcoming board game tournaments at The Boardgamery, be sure to follow Novel Ideas Boardgamer y on Facebook. Another big draw to bring visitors to Granite City is Clancy’s Brewery, which just opened a few weeks ago. Located right across from the movie theater, Clancy’s offers one-of-akind craft beers brewed in Granite City. The first two beers offered at Clancy’s are the ‘Lemon Drop Pils’ and ‘The End is Rye.’ Aside from having their own recipes on tap, Clancy’s will also feature two beers from Recess Brewing in Edwardsville, as well as a guest tap. The new microbrewery is open every Thursday through Sunday, and can be found on Facebook for more information.
Mark your calendars for larger than life fun in Casey on September 28th! There will be a Guinness World Record adjudicator on hand to certify six of the World’s Largest items, including a teeter-totter, a wooden gavel, a twizzle spoon, a barbershop pole, a key, and a golf driver. Progress is being made on a multi-million-dollar development in Centralia. The facility known as Castle Ridge will feature multiple wedding venues, a banquet center and restaurant, lodging, an amphitheater, a kayak run, and an indoor sports facility named after Centralia native and former MLB player Gary Gaetti. The Gaetti Sports Academy is slated to be the first building finished on the property this fall. What’s a Flügel?
Did you know that the German word “Flügel” translates as “Wing?” Whether you knew it before or not, bet you can guess that the Flügel Fest on the downtown Highland Square will feature wings of all kinds. Twenty booths will be manned by area service organizations, restaurants and individuals cooking and serving their best wings and competing for prizes. Festival goers will vote on the best in each category. In addition to great food, the event will feature bands, a silent auction, 50/50 ticket sales, wing tasting, a wing

Naming Rights
Big news out of the racing world recently, as World Wide Technology and Gateway Motorsports Park reached a naming rights agreement. The venue is now named “World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway.” Along with the naming rights, World Wide Technology also becomes the official technology provider for the track. HONORING VETERANS ACROSS ILLINOISouth Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion
After a successful relaunch of the Marion County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Reunion in 2018, the event will take place again this year in conjunction with the Little Egypt Festival in Salem, October 4-6. The Marion County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Reunion “Camp Ronald J. Hall” will kick off on Friday night the 4th, with a Veterans Tribute dinner. On Saturday, there will be a Veterans Tribute section in the Little Egypt Parade, and Sunday is Family Day in the Park - you can bring the family for live music, pony rides, a petting zoo, children’s patriotic costume contest and more. 2019 Veteran’s Tour of Honor
The Veteran’s Tour of Honor is a multi-state, self-directed motorcycle ride to war memorials in all 50 states. Chester has been chosen as one of the cities in Illinois. Riders can reach “Finisher” status by traveling to seven memorials in
any state or across the country. The ride continues until October 31. Pins and Finishers certificates are given to all who visit a minimum of seven sites. $25 of each registration goes to support veterans and first responders through three organizations: Fisher House Foundation, Operation Comfort Warriors and Police and Fire: The Fallen Heroes. Chester’s Multi-War Veterans Memorial commemorates local vets from the Civil War through Vietnam. Riders take a photo at the Memorial to prove they were there. Warehouse 300 It g o e s w i t h o u t s a y i n g t h a t antique and vintage shops are plentiful throughout ILLINOISouth’s territory. But there is one vintage marketplace in Trenton that brings together several local artisans, each with their own different flair. Warehouse 300 opened its doors in the fall of 2018, and wanted to get the word out about the unique shopping experience i t o f f e re d t o consumers – so owner Brenda Kohlbrecher reached out to I L L I N O I So u t h f o r marketing help. “ILLINOISouth has been a huge help in advertising our business and promoting our
regular store events,” Kohlbrecher explains. “I met with them just a few weeks before our Grand Opening and designing an ad, contacting newspapers, getting quotes, so forth, was on my list. I signed up and turned over that task to ILLINOISouth. A few short days later, a professionally designed ad, price quotes, everything I needed was in my inbox. All I had to do was review and confirm!” After a very successful Grand Opening, Kohlbrecher decided to keep planning unique e ve n ts at Ware ho u s e 300 – and she’s used her membership with ILLINOISouth to the fullest, in order to help with each event. “Working with ILLINOISouth has been very beneficial for my business and me, as sole proprietor,” Kohlbrecher said. “My vintage marketplace hosts events about every 6-8 weeks. The fall is the best time to get on a motorcycle and experience the fall foliage and rural charm of many communities in ILLINOISouth’s territory. For those interested in traveling along the Wabash River on the eastern portion of our territory, Route 1 is a great highway to travel with several different stops you should make in a handful of communities. If you exit off of Interstate 70 and head south on Route 1, the first community you’ll come across
is Marshall. For a glance at some beautiful architecture, a visit to Marshall’s business historic district is a must. Many buildings in the district were built between 1830 and 1910, and were designed in the Italianate, Romanesque, and Italian Renaissance Revival styles. While you’re checking out the district – be sure to visit the National Road Welcome Center, and the World’s Largest Gavel located at the Clark County Courthouse!
Once you’ve seen Marshall and head south on Route 1, head to Hutsonville in Crawford County. Hutsonville isn’t far off of Route 1 and is a charming little community that offers great views of the Wabash River. While you’re in town, a trip to the Hutson Cabins is a must for history buffs. Inside these seven authentic 1812 cabins is a vast array of historical artifacts, telling the history of Hutsonville. The cabins are open from June 2 to September 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays, but other tours can be arranged by calling (618) 5634531.
By now you’re probably getting hungry, so if you head south 27 miles – you’ll come to one of the best places to eat on Route 1. Coco’s Café and Wine Bar in Lawrenceville offers a fantastic atmosphere with even better food. The menu is a large to say the least, offering everything from cocktails, to soups and salads, with comfort food, and a plethora of dessert options. renceville is a beautiful one, with more views of the Wabash and a nice trip through Mt. Carmel. Beall Woods State Park is just south of Mt. Carmel and offers five established trails to stretch your legs on. This park attracts people from all over the world interested in seeing one of the few remaining tracts of virgin timber east of the Mississippi River – some trees are over 120 feet tall and 3 feet in diameter. dnr.illinois.gov/ parks/pages/beallwoods To this point Route 1 has offered a lot of history, nature and great food – now how about a little fun? Just a short 13 mile ride south of Beall Woods State Park in Grayville lies Rest Up Camping and RV Corral, but there’s so much to do here besides camp. Rest Up offers one of the best miniature golf courses around, with the option to golf 9 or 18 holes. After you’re fin-
ished with golf, you can head inside and have some fun with their electronic shooting gallery – using replicated guns from the 1800’s to shoot animatronic targets.
