H y Jolly Holly J y HoliDAY-TRIPS the word SALE just gives you the willies, and we mean in a good way, what’s not to like about a store that offers a “Spur of the Moment Sale”? That’s when you may find a treasure unlike any other at Serendipity Card & Gifts in Fairfield or in dozens of stores all decked out for the holidays throughout ILLINOISouth. Since we didn’t think

Serendipity Card & Gifts, Fairfield

you’d appreciate an 1,100 page newsletter ca-thunking in your mailbox this close to you-know-when, we opted to concentrate on six small-ish communities throughout The Tourism Bureau’s 19 counties, and allow you to connect the dots. Holy Cratchit! There’s plenty more where the following came from. When it comes to exploring small towns…it’s all about the find, including the wonderful people you’ll meet along the way, from shopkeepers to restaurateurs to neighbors you just haven’t met yet. Serendipity had a handmade cotton wreath in store for the holidays (we saw it over the summer), and we’re talking made from raw materials, with cotton bolls still attached to the dried vegetation. Looks just like fresh-fallen snow, natch, but the whimsical creation will last year-round. With such

uniqueness already available in August, imagine what’s on hand nowadays. (Maybe nothing, if y’all get there first!) Also, be sure to take in The Willow Tree and Memories Antique Gallery. Lighting up the evenings in Fairfield is the annual “Festival of Lights.” The event, which runs December 5 - January 1 this year, features a brilliant array of glimmering lights and other holiday decor adorning Leo French Park. Bonfires, Christmas carolers and other festive favorites accompany the display making for a great time, certain to put a smile on the face of the biggest Grinch. For eats, try Flat Iron Cooking Co. But save room for dessert. Because, not too far is Amy’s Sweet Gallery, where you’ll find cookies and other treats that are ‘slap-your-grandma’ good! (Which is not as bad as being run over by a reindeer, but hey.) Perhaps the most famous sweetery anywhere in our special region is in Newton: Arndt’s Fudgery, which ships its delectables far and wide. There are literally dozens of flavors. Peppermint fudge at Christmas? We’re in. Newton is also famed for favorite son Burl Ives, folksinger who sang the classic Holly Jolly Christmas and also voiced Sam the Snowman in the animated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer TV feature from the 1960s. Sam, Hermey the Elf, the Abominable Snowman and other characters from the car-

toon have appeared in the holiday parade, in costumes lovingly recreated by an area seamstress. Replicas of the characters, fashioned after the Ives’ actual lawn ornaments, have fascinated those who saw the movie last year… or 50 years ago. Plus, there are puppet shows, carolers in period dress entertain, and carriage rides clop-clop through Newton during the town’s holiday celebration, the first three Fridays in December. Of course, make a day of it. Browse the fine sterling jewelry and unique ethnic pieces from Kenya featured at Five Sisters Jewelry & Gifts. Have a cuppa joe at Solid Grounds, or enjoy a full Eye-talian meal—why; at Joe’s of course. Santa Claus manages somehow to arrive everywhere at once in Fairfield, Newton and our other select four communities to wow kids of all ages. In Fairfield, the Kiwanis put it on. Here and most everywhere you go, they’re all lit up... the parades, that is. In Carmi, it’s a White (County) Christmas lighted parade. A scaled-down version of The Polar Express (powered not by steam, but a repurposed lawnmower engine) has been b featured, but real star Tom Hanks H has not. Highlights: The Berry Basket and a very special K: Karger Kollectibles. (Not to mention V: Vintage, variety and value.) The business has operated in various other Illinois locations, as well as Indiana and Kentucky, before settling in Carmi. (Can’t get enough Hummels? Well, you may find the one you’re missing right here.)

In the charming burg of Waterloo, Christmas on the Square will be illuminated by the GLOW (Great Ladies of Waterloo) lighted parade; chili supper to follow the parade… which will march not once, but twice the weekend after Thanksgiving. Free carriage rides from noon to 4, both days. And, you get to enjoy holiday selections by the Waterloo

800-442-1488 from page 1 Municipal Band. (Chili not your favorite for a special day trip? Try Gallagher’s or JFires’ Market Bistro.) Shop at Mill Street Treasures downtown, or at Nice Twice, a converted train depot down the hill. If that whets your appetite for history, the History Museum of Monroe County is here, too. Or, take a jaunt to Columbia for the parade on Dec. 5. (With a name like Bright Night Christmas, do you think this one might be lighted, as well?) And if you’d like to get all lit up yourself— well, don’t. But, after a rigorous shopping day at Elements Off Main (local artists, photographers and gifts galore) or Magnolia, enjoy a meal and mellow out with some fruit of the vine near Elements at Reifschneider’s Grill & Grape, which diners have reviewed favorably for its beer and wine lists. And yes, you could probably make one of your day trips this holiday season to take in both Columbia and Waterloo, which are just a little more than eight miles apart on Illinois 3, a section of the Great River Road, with the lovely, quaint town centers just up the bluff a bit. How about another lighted Christmas parade? Well, you can try the one in O’Fallon, the mini-metropolis closest to St. Louis—that is, of the six we’ve highlighted for day trippers. (It’s on Saturday, Nov. 28.) Maybe have some lunch at Peel Wood Fired Pizza in between shopping at places like Fezziwig’s Marketplace and Luckenbooth Consignment Gallery… the latter of which is a really fun visit if you’ve got something to sell, too. (Well, consign.) Peel’s is the second location of a business whose flagship is in Edwardsville. And, we’re aware that pizza has a crust, not a peel; the latter is the moniker of one of America’s traditional 19th century beer styles. Peel’s cream ale is pale gold with “a fruity floral hop aroma and a sweet malty flavor.” Or, so they say. Sounds a-peeling, in any case. Fezziwig’s is a purveyor of oolong and pu-erh… both tea varieties, for the uninitiated… as well as black, white, green, and chai. With more than 115 varieties, this is the other way to over-caffeinate yourself. (Speaking of Fezziwig, are you having a Dickens of a time trying to place that name? Why, Mr. Fezziwig was the fine, upstanding businessman that Ebenezer Scrooge apprenticed under as a young man in A Christmas Carol, before his ethics went completely to pot and he became, well, Scrooge.) As well as dozens of teas that aren’t Lipton, this emporium offers fine gourmet foods that you won’t find in many area supermarkets. Notice we haven’t mentioned “The Mall.”That is, not yet. St. Clair Square is in Fairview Heights, just an exit west of O’Fallon on Interstate 64. And the area’s largest antique mall is just across the highway. Haven’t dropped yet? Well, then, keep shopping! Nighttime Christmas Parade, Waterloo

Illinois Road Show comes to Lebanon, IL The Illinois Office of Tourism came to town on July 27 to announce record-breaking tourism numbers across the State. The event was held Monday at the Hettenhausen Center for the Arts at McKendree University in Lebanon. Cory Jobe, IOT Director, reported more than 109.4 Million Visitors came to Illinois last year - a 3.5% increase over the previous year. These visitors spent more than $36.3 Billion generating over $2.7 Billion in state and local taxes. This marks the 4th consecutive year of record breaking numbers. In ILLINOISouth alone, over $1.14 Billion was generated - an increase of over 4.5% from the previous year. In our region alone, tourism is responsible for over 8,200 jobs according to the most recent data. All in all, our thriving industry saves the average Illinois household $1,300 in taxes through hotel/motel taxes that are generated. We’re incredibly proud of these numbers and a big thank you to everyone who made this growth possible! We at Illinois South Tourism are excited about the phenomenal economic impact tourism created last year, and look forward to keeping our industry growing.

A 700-year-old canoe discovered in sandbar This New Exhibit Shows Ancient Life in the Mississippi River Valley and was painstakingly preserved at Cahokia

M Mounds State Historic Site. It iis the centerpiece of a new pe permanent exhibit: “Wetlands an Waterways: the Key to and Ca Cahokia,” focuses on life alo the rivers and wetlands along of the Mississippi Valley that gav a rise to Cahokia Mounds, av gave f city. America’s first The exhibit includes a 52 ft. long mural depicting a backwater lake, river bluffs, forests and fields typical of the floodplain, known locally as the American Bottom. In front of the meticulously detailed mural, stands a life-size diorama with a woman harvesting squashes while other native crops grow nearby. She gazes across a lake rich with fish, turtles, ducks and more, to watch as a man and a boy load their canoe. They are taking rabbits, fish, mussels, baskets of nuts and wild plants to trade at a nearby village along the lake. The exhibit panels provide details about the scene. Exhibit cases surrounding the new diorama describe Native American agriculture, hunting and gathering and cosmological beliefs related to this environment. The aforementioned dugout canoe was constructed from bald cypress wood between 600-700 years ago. Tool marks and charring from the process can still be seen on its surfaces. It was found in Arkansas on a sandbar in the St. Francis River after a flood in 2008.The Illinois State Archaeological Society bought the canoe and donated it to Cahokia Mounds. The process to preserve the canoe took over five years. It was submerged in a chemical solution for three years and then required another two years to allow the vessel to dry out! All in all, it took 19 key individuals and ten different organizations ranging from museum societies to a video production studio to create this intriguing exhibit. It was well worth the effort! Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is located just a couple miles south of I-255 on Collinsville Rd. in Collinsville. The Interpretive Center is open Wed. – Sun. year-round, and you can visit the outdoor mound sites including Monks Mound any time. www.CahokiaMounds.org
