went down to the crossroads… but not the ones Clapton sang about. I’m referring to Marshall, IL – the crossroads of I-70, the Lincoln Heritage Trail, The Historic National Road (Hwy 40), and IL-1. Marshall is nestled just minutes from Terre Haute, IN, and is the Seat of Clark County – one of three new counties covered by ILLINOISouth Tourism. Clark County is home to rich history, pristine parks and plenty of unique attractions. “Marshall is the kind of town that makes you want a hot dog and an ice-cold lemonade on a summer night” says Jennifer Bishop, Economic Development Director, and Head of the Marshall Chamber of Commerce. “Summers here are incredible, from concerts on the Courthouse lawn, to the seemingly endless parade of boats heading to Lincoln Trail and Mill Creek Parks each weekend; the town just comes alive!” This Summer will be one to remember……. Jennifer and her team are planning a “Walldogs” muralpainting event June 22 – 26 welcoming over 100 artists from around the world to paint 16 murals in town.Visitors can sign up to help with the painting, or just observe. A Vendor Fair sponsored by the local Gaslight Art Colony and other festivities round out the event. The new murals will join an existing mural commemorating the Historic National Road. Across the street from that mural is Harlan Hall, a gorgeous three-story

brick building, established as an opera house and delivery stable in 1872. It now houses the Illinois National Road Welcome Center, as well as a meeting and event space. Another historical spot can be found under the water tower, at 717 Archer Ave. Archer House is an inn established in 1841, that on several occasions housed a young lawyer named Abraham Lincoln when he held court in Marshall.

How about grabbing a bite at the West Union Café? The Café is the recipient of not one, but two “Best of the Wabash Valley” awards – and is the only eatery that has won two. One for their broasted chicken, and the other is for their homemade pies. I opted for chocolate/peanut butter…save room for dessert! Nearby Martinsville typifies the heart of rural America. The charm is felt from the retro water tower to the

two side-by-side parks just off the main drag. Linn Park, across from the city’s Veteran’s Memorial Park, is home to the small town’s array of summer events and concerts. Can you think of a better way to celebrate a small town than with really big things? I’m talking gargantuan, tremendous, colossal, and in some case the bona fide World’s Largest things… Casey, near the western border between Clark and Cumberland Counties, is among the most unique towns I’ve seen.Visitors will find The World’s Largest (as verified by Guinness) Rocking Chair, Mailbox, Golf Tee, Pitchfork, Wooden Shoes, Wind

Chime, Knitting Needles and Crochet Hook. These and other incredibly large items like a giant #2 Pencil can be found throughout the town with more on the way. All of these big things can inspire a big appetite. We’d recommend a tiny store called Moonshine. This small, quaint shop is about 12 country miles out of town and is worldfamous for shelling out some of the best burgers in Southern Illinois. They’ve even made national T.V.!

Hello from jo... Fortunately regionalism is alive and well in ILLINIOSouth! Over the last few months, we’ve expanded our footprint as three more counties have joined the Tourism Bureau: Hamilton, Clark and Montgomery, now make up 22 counties throughout the ILLINOISouth region! See inside for more…… This will be the last Tourism Times that “yours truly” will be publishing…… As of July 1st, I will be retiring from the ILLINOISouth

Tourism Bureau. It’s been quite a journey since Spring of 2002. How very fortunate I’ve been to have traveled so much and so often throughout our region. I have met wonderful people and created unforgettable memories. Ten thousand square miles, 22 counties and a couple of hundred cities…..truly, “Life’s a trip!” Like the trapeze artist….hanging on and letting go while grabbing for the next rope….that moment in time suspended in mid-air…truly defines how I feel…“in transition,” leaving the Bureau and waiting for the next chapter to unfold. With an eye to the future for the bureau’s continued growth and development, ILLINOISouth will

be in competent hands for a smooth transition. My amazing staff will assist you in the best possible way. Please accept my heartfelt gratitude for all you are and all you have done to help us “grow our region.” See you down the road! Blessings,

The Kaskaskia-Cahokia Trail won an Excellence in Tourism Award for Best Cooperative Partnership. This high honor was presented on Monday, March 21 at the Governors Conference on Travel and Tourism. The brochure and other promotional items offer visitors a detailed look at the KC Trail, a 60-mile corridor weaving through St. Clair,

Monroe and Randolph counties with historic sites dating back to Native American civilizations in 11,000 BC. We are thrilled to bring the award home on behalf of the three counties, numerous communities and the one of a kind attractions who have worked hard to raise awareness of “Illinos’ First Road!”

cated to the great American pastime… BASEBALL! The Bottomley-Ruffing-Schalk (BRS) Baseball Museum is a must-see for EVERY baseball nerd traveling through the area. Named for Jim Bottomley (St. Louis Cardinals; Cincinnati Reds; St. Louis Browns), Charles “Red” Ruffing (Boston Red Sox; New York Yankees; Chicago White Sox), Ray Schalk (Chicago White Sox; New York Giants) – all three are Montgomery County natives AND National Baseball Hall of Famers.

from page 1 Clear on the other side of ILLINOISouth, tourists can “get their kicks” in Montgomery County. Litchfield, the county’s largest city sits on I55 halfway between Springfield & St. Louis. Two types of travelers come through Litchfield, according to Sarah Waggoner, the City’s Tourism Coordinator. Outdoor sports and recreation enthusiasts and Route 66 sightseers make Litchfield a destination. The former comes mostly for Lake Lou Yeager where you can fish, swim, and boat – with no horsepower limit! There’s tent, RV and cabin camping at the lake, including equestrian camping. For land-lovers, Shoal Creek Conservation Area may be just for you. It is home to over 700 species of plants, 70 kinds of butterflies and at least 74 species of birds, all of which can be spotted along two separate loops of walking trails. Don’t forget your Camera! Two alignments of Historic Route 66 pass through Litchfield with three Roadside Attractions along the way.The

Skyview Drive-in is the oldest, continuously operating drive-in along the Route and still opens its gates from April through September. Down the road sits Neihaus Cycle Sales, which has been family-owned since 1971. This top notch Yamaha/Honda motorcycle dealership is decked out in vintage neon with Route 66 murals and signage. The third and tastiest Roadside Attraction is the Ariston Café. Founded in 1924 by Pete Adam, it is the oldest continuously operated restaurant on Route 66. But that’s not the only significant 66. In 1966, Nick and Demi Adams became the secondgeneration to run the business, and have been doing so with a smile for the last 50 years. They serve up a slew of diner-classics prepared fresh in

Diners from 47 different countries made the stop in 2015 alone, according to Nick. He keeps track by having international travelers sign foreign-language Route 66 photo books. Catty-corner from the Ariston Café is the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center. Stop in for a look at Litchfield’s rich history and the role Route 66 played in its development. A 1939 Ford, classic jukebox, floor-to-ceiling displays and a corner dedicated to local veterans offer great insight into this AllAmerican town. Another museum in nearby Nokomis is dedi-

Along with cases dedicated to each of the museum’s namesakes, the immense collection features game jerseys, signed balls and bats, and an extensive collection of other memorabilia spanning several decades of the game. The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays or by appointment. Stop by the charming Dreams Gifts and More next door for a snack or a cup of joe. This Café/Gift Shop offers a great selection of handcrafted coffee drinks and delectable treats! Back down Highway 16 you’ll find the town of Hillsboro. From brick-street neighborhoods to the main street lined with eateries, resale shops and more, Hillsboro instantly makes you feel at home. Smack-dab in the middle of Main St., the Orpheum Theater offers the “Best Movie Deal.” I must say I haven’t found one better. For only $7 you not only get a ticket to a first-run show, but a soda and popcorn…WOW! For other entertainment, take in the summer concerts at the Sherwood Forest Campgrounds where the best re-

gional music acts take the stage at 7 p.m. on the First Friday, June – September. The event is free and food and camping are available! After taking in all that Montgomery County has to offer, you might need some good ole’ rest and relaxation. If a glass of vino is your choice, how about uncorking something tasty and enjoying the view at Forsee Vineyards and Winery in Coffeen?

from page 3 Sometimes all we need is to getaway, unplug and unwind. Try Hamilton County! It is home to the friendly town of Mcleansboro. The downtown courthouse square consists of a couple restaurants, a little Café and a library, housed in a magnificent home built in 1884 for the founder of Cloud State Bank. The library includes the Hamilton County Museum, containing historical photos and artifacts. McLeansboro really shines with it’s great outdoors. This small town of 3,000 people is flanked by two State Fish & Wildlife Areas, a City Lake, a golf course and 6 other parks and playgrounds, a stones throw away from one to the next. A big feature is Kids Kingdom – a delightful children’s park complete with several tiny buildings, a Thomas the Train Engine play area and playground. Blocks from downtown is Lake McLeansboro. The reservoir is an anglers delight and home to annual events including a Crappie Tournament (4/30) and Large Mouth Bass Tournament (5/21, with proceeds benefiting Relay for Life). Birdwatchers take notice! Eagles, ospreys and even pelicans have been known to rest their wings at Lake McLeansboro! East of town is the Hamilton County State Fish & Wildlife Area – home to Dolan Lake. It’s perfect for a peaceful getaway, featuring 1,600 acres with walking trails and three miles of shoreline along the 75-acre lake. There are largemouth bass, crappie, channel catfish more. Camping options include standard and primitive tent camping and RV hookups plus five quaint, little cabins. The cabins are a recent addition, made possible by Jerry Sloan, Basketball Hall of Famer for the Chicago Bulls, and McLeansboro native. On the west side of town, hunters and trap shooters can fire away at Ten

Mile Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area. Gun ranges in the park often house events with youth and amateur shooters from all over the area. Ten Mile Creek has several species of birds and other game. The town’s largest park is Rogers-Dewitt Park. A nature trail with footbridges and open acres of meadow create a tranquil environment. Plans are in place to develop a night-sky observation station and

The Walldogs Are Coming!

Celebrate a Dodransbicentennial…that’s a 175th Anniversary! Richland County was established in 1841 by taking a portion west of Lawrence County and a portion east of Clay County. During the establishment, with much controversy, Olney was named the county seat as its central location and proximity to the Fox River were desirable. Since that time, Olney & Richland County have prospered in agriculture, industry, community, and famous “white squirrels!” Join Olney as they celebrate this rich history throughout the year, with a special weekend celebration, July 22 - July 24, 2016. For further information and schedule of events, visit: www.olney175.com

Greenville Winery “The Family Vine” “There are lots of elements in play when making wine, especially the element of surprise.” That’s how Tony Gan describes he and his wife Tammy’s hobby-

turned-business, The Family Vine. This picturesque winery recently opened in Bond County, IL. Located on Red Ball Trail just north of downtown Greenville, the Winery officially opened it’s doors October 29, 2015. Despite his description, it’s no surprise the Gan’s have been successful in starting the winery. The two studied wine production techniques during numerous workshops and classes, and dug into the science of the process as their interest grew over the past decade. The Gan’s sought the advice and mentorship of fellow wine producers Gary and Diane Forsee of Forsee Vineyard near Coffeen. When their hobby grew into the desire to open a winery, the detailoriented pair focused on creating a rustic, charming gathering space, as well. The passion for wine is more than a studied hobby. It runs deep in Tammy’s family history. The name Traub used in their Traub Haus wine name, is Tammy’s great, great grandmother’s maiden name. Tammy recalls playing among the vines that were grown from grapes brought from Germany by her great, great grandmother. A few of the vines growing in the Gan’s vineyard are from cuttings from those original vines. The winery boasts nearly 4 acres of vines on the 20-acre location. There is a wine-tasting room and eatery with a window into the wine production room. The venue also includes an expansive covered patio overlooking a pond and

the vineyards beyond. The late fall opening left only a small window of ideal weather for patio service; however, the Gan’s expect the patio to be a favorite destination for guests in the Spring and Summer months. The main attraction is the wine with several varieties planned for release in Spring and Summer. A few highlights include oak-aged Norton reds, a Traub House dry red blend, and sweet and dry apple wines produced with locally grown apples from nearby Dolls’ Orchard, a fellow Bond County agri-business. The eatery serves a variety of fare, including daily featured chef ’s choice items, locally-sourced cheeses from nearby Marcoot Creamery and the winery’s “anything-but” standard wood fired pizzas. Weekend menus include Brunch fare and breakfast pizzas. While the wine production is interesting, according to Tony, the most enjoyable part of opening the winery has been all the people they’ve met. “We are looking forward to enjoying our guests as we move into Spring and Summer.” Visit Tony and Tammy Gan at the Family Vine, Thursday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also available for special events. Find the winery at 1349 Red Ball Trail, Greenville, IL. By phone at 618-6649293 or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheFamilyVineWinery.

World Shooting Complex In January, it was announced that the 2016 Grand American will take place at the World Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL. Dates of the event are August 3-13, 2016. Since September 2015, target shooting was suspended because of the Illinois State Budget issue. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) and the Amateur Trapshooting Association of America (ATA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) allowing the event to take place. Since the event is a National Event with participants from around the world, it seemed necessary for this “agreement” so the ATA and their members could begin making their travel arrangements for the Grand American.
