OWN A PIECE OF AUTOMOTIVE NOSTALGIA OR GAWK TO YOUR HEART’S CONTENT AT GATEWAY CLASSIC CARS By Bill Beggs Jr.
IN
a magical land called O’Fallon, hundreds of antique cars come to life at Gateway Classic Cars. Actually, from a slew of classic Chevys to at least one collectible Jaguar, they’re not going anywhere right now. This impressive exhibition of rolling stock is on display in an expansive new building that allows each vehicle plenty of room for admirers or prospective buyers to walk around, peer inside, but please don’t touch! Well, for a few grand their new drivers could make them roar to life. Meanwhile, antique car aficionados may appreciate them in all their two-tone glory, red fuzzy dice optional, at a standstill. The $3 admission fee is more than worth it. But just one visit won’t do justice to this fine collection. About 140 cars, trucks and other rides are on display any given day, but this inventory is anything but static. John Busch at the showroom-cummuseum says about 85 percent of the cars on the showroom floor go home with new owners. Gateway doesn’t actually own any of them; they are there on consignment from their owners. And cars are switched out and transferred between the company’s nine stores (as of this May), so no two visits are the same. There are about 1,000 cars from which to choose throughout the company, from Houston to Fort Lauderdale to Chicago. And these cars aren’t just boss… they’re, well, cherry. The information sheets on the inside of the windshields are all a labor of love by the sales staff—also curators or docents, if you will. There are no
Gateway Classic Car
guided tours, at least not officially, but these folks really have a gas showing off these automotive wonders. They love their work, and they know their stuff, says Busch. The information on each vehicle is exhaustive, mostly because the owners know them so well. “Not everybody here knows everything about all the cars, of course, but everybody knows at least something about each,” he says. Most are antiques, if you go by the yardstick of 25 years old or older. But there are some recent editions, too, mostly muscle cars from a few model years back. OMG; you’ll want to have one all for yourself. The brand-new building, opened about this time last year, is replete with a banquet area and conference center. About 29,000 square feet of convention
or tradeshow space can be configured for gearheads and wannabes. Fundraisers and business meetings fit right in. There hasn’t been a wedding booked here yet, but just you wait. Meanwhile, a movie theater runs auto-themed movies whenever anyone is in the mood. It only seats eight… although in extremely comfortable recliners… but visitors can have a glimpse at, or kick back and take in, such high-powered fare as “Smokey and the Bandit.” And the gift shop has been lovingly stocked with die-cast metal replicas,T-shirts, plus vintage signs and placards that evoke service stations from the middle of the previous century. You could spend half your time in here. Meanwhile, the special events slate is filling up. A three-day sports show heavy on

from page 3 the Redbirds’ 1982 world championship team ran for three days last month: Whitey Herzog, Ozzie Smith and Willie McGee were there March 27-29 to sign autographs and press the flesh, as well as Cal Ripken Jr. and Orlando Pace. Or, you could take in the Midwest Motorcycle Expo in mid-April. Then, you could roar northwest to Granite City for another attraction, but where’s the fire? Not to worry. This venerable steel town’s old Engine House No. 1 could help put it out, if anyone’s there to let the vintage vehicles out of storage.Alas, there are no set hours at the Old Fire Engine Museum, in a ca.-1900 building that also used to be city hall and the police department HQ. Indeed, horses were stabled here at one time, when that was how firefighters got their equipment to a blaze, but not as lickety-
split as they did in later-model equipment. A number of vintage engines from back in the day are on display, as well as firefighting equipment from through the years. Granite City 75th Anniversary The Chamber of Commerce of Southwestern Madison County is recognizing its 75th Anniversary. During this year-wide celebration the communities of Granite City, Madison, Venice, Pontoon Beach and Mitchell will pay tribute to the area’s long history of manufacturing. In the late 1800’s Frederick & William Niedringhaus established NESCO Stamping Works. The two brothers then shortly established the Granite City Steel Rolling Mill realizing the area not only offered the land they need but the Venice Ferry also gave them access to the river. Within the next 4 years the American Steel Foundry and the Commonwealth Plant were also established. It was the early steel industry that generated
the need and the development of the transportation network as we know it today. Our industry network has continued to grow with manufacturers, processers, distributors along with countless modes of transportation, logistics and technology all now making this their home. Many of the hundreds of different steel parts, machine mechanisms, food products, and packaging materials that we make can be found in your home, in your office, in your cars, and even on your breakfast table. But these products that are made right here, in our area are also provided to people and businesses in hundreds of different countries all over the world. Holy Family Church Museum Priests from Quebec arrived in the Cahokia area in December 1698. They set about building a small church. This log-timbered
building would serve as the center of Holy Family Parish. Formal dedication of this structure occurred May 14th, 1699. Thus for 316 years the institution has amassed a large quantity of unique items. Beginning with the sacred vessels brought by the missionaries (chalice, paten and ciborium) the collection has grown over the many years through donations and purchase. Visitors now have the opportunity to see these pieces which include: a Bible printed in Paris in 1568 which was given to the Parish in 1834; an icon (circa 500 A.D.)
donated by Joseph Desloge in 1997; a Missal brought by the missionary priests which was printed in Antwerp in 1668. More recent items were included to highlight the consolidation of the former parishes of Immaculate Conception Parish in Centerville and St. Catherine Laboure Parish in Cahokia. The Museum is open on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. or by appointment. Tours for groups or individuals may be arranged by calling 618-332-8493 or 618-337-4548.

Make new friends at the Luau and the parties at the Sailing for Veterans and Whale-of-a-Sail regattas. Learn-to-sail programs for adults and kids come with boats for all and friendly instructors in the boat with you at all times. Relaxed pursuit cruising takes place on several Saturdays (Hare and Hounds Series) and (Pursuit Series) Sundays. After a gala grand opening in late August, 2014, the Sainte Marie Foundation Museum is now open on the first Sunday of each month from 1 – 3 p.m. or by special request for families and other groups (call 618-455-3153). The featured exhibit (to be available until the end of May, 2015) celebrates all present and former Sainte Marie area residents who have served in the military, with a special focus on World War I and World War II participants. A DVD made by Annette Reis Lynch has been very popular with visitors who have seen the exhibit. It features people from Ste. Marie who served in the military over the years, starting with the Picquet brothers, founders of the village, who served in the Civil War. Other exhibits at the Foundation House Museum feature artifacts from the 177-year-old village’s history, including an examining room from the last medical doctor to practice in the village. A wedding bedroom features an antique bed and chest as well as a wedding dress from the 1940’s. Special programs have included a well-attended Sunday afternoon on the Music of War, featuring songs from the Civil War through World War II. The ending program, Vietnam: From an Army Aviator’s Perspective will be the closing program for the Military Exhibit, to be held on Sunday, May 31 at 2 p.m. The Museum is located in the Foundation House at 113 S. Washington Street, Sainte Marie. Admission is free. For further information, call Mike Hartrich at 618-783-8678 or Donna Keller 618-455-3452.
