Local Events Reignite As The Pandemic Slows but it has been altered – we will have more information on that within the publication. 2020 also marked the 300-year anniversary of Fort de Chartres in Randolph County, which they would have celebrated during their annual Summer Rendezvous event. That gathering usually takes place in June, but has been pushed to September this year, and they will still be
celebrating the 300-year milestone – regardless of the event being a year late. As you read ahead, you will find a slew of events taking place this fall. We have three regions full of gatherings, so make sure to break out your pen and circle any that strike your fancy! We hope to see you in ILLINOISouth this fall!
There were some events that were able to continue over the last year and a half, even amid the pandemic. Doing so meant that event organizers had to think outside of the box to keep crowds distant and safe – which in many cases meant drive-thru events. Some of those tactics will still be used for events this year, while other best practices adopted during the pandemic will be used full-time moving forward. Of course, some of the events that were affected by the pandemic were not your typical run of the mill celebrations. In Olney, the city had been preparing for years to host Mad Dog 2020 – an amazing mural painting event that features an elite group of artists that visit select towns each year. They are hosting that event this year,

Events are back. Three simple words that mean a lot to many communities in ILLINOISouth. Due to the pandemic, a vast majority of annual events throughout our territory were not able to function. Several towns and cities throughout ILLINOISouth rely on these gatherings to bring much needed tourism and tax revenue to their communities.

As we gear up for the fall travel and tourism season, there is one word that describes our region of Illinois perfectly…optimistic. For the first time in a long time, folks are optimistic about welcoming crowds and hosting events. Due to restrictions and safety concerns, many gatherings were simply postponed until there was a light at the end of the tunnel – now that light is shining. Several events that were supposed to be held in the spring or early summer of this year were delayed to the fall, and that scheduling move has paid off. Restrictions have loosened and many folks are ready to get back out there – which is why we have decided to dedicate this entire publication to events. Some gatherings have changed things up a bit for this year, while others are celebrating some pretty important milestones this fall season. In the pages to follow you will find in-depth information on several gatherings, so that you know what to expect. Because there are so many events planned for the next several weeks, we have changed up the original layout of the Tourism Times to make it a little easier to follow. You’ll find that all of the events are broken down by our regions – Western, Central, and Eastern. After the in-depth articles about the events, we list all of the upcoming gatherings that we know about for that particular region. As a note, some events may not have been able to have plans finalized by the time we took this publication to print, so please be sure to check the event calendar at illinoisouth.org for more information on an event that you may not see. We REALLY hope you enjoy your time in ILLINOISouth this fall, and as always – make sure to take a ton of pictures and tag us in them! We love to see and hear about everyone’s experience while you’re visiting.

Attraction Spotlight! Amazing news — the Illinois Caverns in Monroe County have reopened after being closed for more than 10 years! Located at 4369 G Road, Waterloo, IL 62298, it is the second largest cave system in the state. It will be open seasonally from April through October and during the week, the site will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am – 4pm.
Know Before You Go!
Now these caverns are not like the Meramec Caverns in Missouri, so we ask that you please follow these tips below to ensure that everyone has a safe and fun experience. • Admission is free to enter, but when you arrive, check in at the interpretive center. Your gear will need to be inspected before entering the caverns. • Wear old clothes and bring a change of clothes. There is a changing facility on site and you WILL get muddy and wet!
• Each person needs to have at least three sources of battery powered lights on them. We highly recommend wearing head lamps. • Groups of 25 or more will need to call ahead to the caverns to make reservations at 618-458-6699.
CHRISTINE ORR Sales & Marketing Manager
• Bring a good pair of tall, waterproof boots. There is running water and mud, so proper footwear is a must. You will slip and slide in tennis shoes! Flip flops are NOT allowed.
ANDY WATERMAN Communications Director
• A helmet is a MUST before entering the caves. Bike helmets will do just fine.

CREDITS
• A minimum of four people is required for each visit.
• Officials ask that everyone be out of the caves by 3pm and nobody is allowed to enter after 2pm. • The caverns are not handicap accessible. The steps to enter the cavern are very steep and inside the cavern it is very slick.

WESTERN REGION FORT DE CHARTRES IN PRAIRIE DU ROCHER
Mark Your Calendars!
Visit Events Of All Kinds In ILLINOISouth’s Western Region Earlier this year we reached out to as many of our community partners as possible and invited them to share all of the details they have for events that are happening this fall. We’ll start with the gatherings in our Western Region, which consists of three counties – Monroe, Randolph, and St. Clair. First up is World Wide Technology Raceway. WWT Raceway was one of the few venues that was fortunate enough to continue with events in 2020 – albeit with much smaller crowds than normal. This season, World Wide Technology Raceway is hosting a full slate of races including three major events between August and September. On August 20th, WWT Raceway will play host to the Camping World Truck Series Playoffs, followed by the Bommarito Auto Group 500 INDYCAR race on the 21st. A month later, the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series Midwest Nationals will be held at WWT Raceway’s drag strip the weekend of the 24th through the 26th! Make sure to visit World Wide Technology’s website to buy your tickets before they’re gone. Another gathering at WWT Raceway has nothing to do with racing, and everything to do with honoring our local heroes who have done so much for our local communities since the pandemic began! On Saturday, September 4th the Southwest Madison County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging everyone to visit the Rockin’ Blues, Brew & Barbecue event at WWT Raceway. This celebration is dedicated to those who were deemed essential, who continued their responsibility to their positions, while realizing the potential danger to themselves and to their families. This event goes out to the nurses, doctors, teachers, pharmacists, our hospitality workers, bus drivers, police, firemen, grocery clerks, sanitation workers, bus drivers, truck drivers and so many others. There will be plenty to do at the gathering, which is also a Kansas City Sanctioned BBQ Competition, Master Series Cook-Off event. Folks can enjoy a hot air balloon festival, go carts, craft beer, food trucks, craft booths, a 5K run/walk 6

to benefit the United Way of Greater St. Louis, music of all genres, and much more! “Please plan to spend the day with us,” says Rosemarie Brown, Executive Director for the Southwest Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Whether as one of the honorees, as a worker bee, as a volunteer, or as a resident wishing to thank those hundreds of people who work through the pandemic, facing odds that no one should have to face, and earning them the title of OUR HERO," adds Brown. For more information on the event, feel free to call 618-876-6400. There are several art-themed events planned for this fall as well, including Art in the Park in Highland. This event has become a beloved tradition that normally attracts thousands of folks each weekend every year. “Art in the Park is a family-friendly event,” explains Lynette Schuepbach, President of the Highland Arts
Council. “Kids have an opportunity to make their own art and to purchase donations from the artists – just for kids. Live music keeps us dancing and good food fills our stomachs. Come enjoy the fall foliage as you stroll through 60-65 booths and discover art that speaks to you!” Due to the pandemic, Art in the Park did not happen in 2020 – but Scheupbach says they are beyond excited to pick it up again this year. “We are ‘over the moon’ to offer a venue that can help artists share their work, and where attendees can buy and appreciate the 11 mediums represented there,” Shuepbach adds. There will be a few differences about this year’s event that folks will notice. “We have redesigned the layout so that the booths are five feet apart. We will also provide hand sanitizer for artists to keep in their booths,” says Schuepbach. “We are also offering indoor spaces as well as outdoor spaces to protect more fragile work and provide space without

requiring artists to set up a tent.” If you’re interested in attending Art in the Park in Highland this year, it will be held October 8th-10th. For more information head to highlandartscouncil.org. One of the largest events in our region usually happens each May, but due to the pandemic, Art on the Square in Belleville is scheduled for October 22nd – 24th this year. If you have never been to Art on the Square, it really is a sight to behold. There are approximately 105 artists that are chosen to participate out of nearly 1,000 applicants each year. These artists specialize in an array of different art mediums from sculptures to painting, and anything in between. This show has been ranked the number one fine arts show in the country six times by the Art Fair Source Book! More than $1,000,000 worth of art is purchased annually
at Art on the Square. Admission is free, and there are usually activities for the kiddos as well as live entertainment and great food options! Another great event in Belleville is taking place just a couple of weeks after that, as the city will play host to Belleville Main Street’s Art and Wine Walk on November 6th. “This will be our 3rd event for 2021,” says Kathy Kaiser, PR & Media Relations Rep for the City of Belleville. “We are hoping to continue to raise funds for Belleville Main Street, so that we can continue our marketing and promotion of our Downtown area.” The event is as exactly how it sounds, folks can enjoy numerous works of art, all while sipping on some amazing wine. For more information on the event, visit bellevillemainstreet. net. A similar event, but with different drinks and no art is slated for September 11th. Belleville Main Street’s Craft Beer Walk has done nothing but grow since its

inception a few years ago, and folks in the community hope that will continue this year. “We are super excited to host everyone throughout our downtown, as they enjoy numerous craft beverages from 3 – 8pm on September 11th,” Kaiser adds. Another event that is always huge for Belleville is their Oktoberfest. This year’s event is planned for September 17th – 18th, and will be their 40th annual celebration! “This festival is the start of the Fall happenings in Belleville, as we celebrate our German heritage, and raise funds for The Belleville Ainad Shriners, Belleville Sister Cities and the Exchange Club,” says Kaiser. Belleville’s Oktoberfest gives folks the opportunity to enjoy three stages of live music, enjoy authentic German cuisine with American food as well; and participate in wiener dog races, a cornhole tournament, and enjoy carnival rides. “We can’t wait to get “our German On”, along with everyone in attendance at this 2 day event on the Public Square in Downtown Belleville,” Kaiser adds. Keep an eye out for all of the details on this year’s event at bellevilleoktoberfest.com. We have already mentioned some great art shows, and there is yet another long-running art show in our region can be found in Fairview Heights! This will be the 33rd year for Midwest Salute to the Arts, a three-day outdoor Arts Festival held annually the weekend before Labor Day in Moody Park. Midwest Salute to the Arts Director Sharon Kassing ensures that the event will be following all State and CDC guidelines, and will take other precautions as well. “We will have additional spacing between each Artist’s tent,” Kassing explains. “There will also be additional spacing for all food and drink vendors, as well as sanitizing and hand-washing stations.” Kassing adds that it’s important for the community to get the event back up and running this year. “Excitement in Fairview Heights grows as the signature white tents create an art gallery in beautiful Moody Park. This inspiring and tranquil setting is graciously provided by the City of Fairview Heights,” says Kassing. Over the last three decades “Salute”has become an annual family event for many folks in

Fall 2021
Be sure to mark your calendars for Metro East Pride Fest, which will be held on Saturday, October 2nd this year. Normally the event is held earlier in the year, but the group took precautions and scheduled it for October. The 2021 Metro East Pride Fest will be a large outdoor festival located in downtown Belleville, celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community. The event will focus on diversity, equality, and inclusion. It’s outside, it’s free, it’s family-friendly and it’s FUN! Pride Fest offers musical entertainment, vendors and food trucks, community organizations and healthcare services, and much more. There will also be a Kid Zone, for youngsters ages 5 to 12. Pride Fest also features a High Heel Drag Race sponsored by local restaurants and bars, and wraps up with the Pride Drag Show, featuring the King and Queen of Pride and other drag performances. All are welcome and encouraged to attend! For more information and details about this year's event, be sure to check out their website at metroeastpride.org. Craft enthusiasts should visit Shiloh in late October for their Treasures in the Park Craft Fair. With the event being later in the year, there should be little to no restrictions in terms of safety precautions for the event. “Hopefully by October the mandate will be completely lifted,” says Sue Quitmeyer, Events Coordinator for Shiloh. “If needed, we will request masks to be worn. We will also have hand sanitizing stations available.” Treasures in the Park is unique because it is a handmade only event. “Our crafters will bring their one-of-a-kind items to be purchased,” Quitmeyer explains. “We had over 30 crafters in the past and hope to have even more this year. It is an indoor and outdoor event, with food served by our school organizations, so the proceeds of the food go back in our community to help our students.” The plan is to also have live music at the event from 12 – 3pm. “We look forward to having this event because our crafters get to showcase their handy work, and we get to give back to our community,” Quitmeyer adds. “This creates UNITY IN OUR COMMUNITY! What a better way to get people to come together and enjoy life.” Treasures in the Park Craft Fair is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd from 9am – 3pm at Klucker Hall, 14 Park Drive in Shiloh. In Mascoutah, their annual Homecoming Und Augustfest is a decades old tradition that is beloved by many in the area. “We have the largest and most successful Homecoming in southwestern Illinois,” says Pat McMahan, Treasurer of the Mascoutah Improvement Association. Mascoutah’s Homecoming was yet another event that was canceled due to the pandemic, but they are excited to host it again. At this point, there are no big changes to the event brought about by the pandemic, but McMahan says the Homecoming will follow whatever guidance the State or the St. Clair County Health Department gives them. “We will be as safe as possible for our people,”McMahan adds. “We want everyone to have a fun, safe experience.” Homecoming will certainly give you that small town, Americana sort of vibe if that’s what you’re looking for. There are always rides, food, entertainment and of course a parade. The Homecoming Und Augustfest is planned for August 6th – 8th and you can always follow along with their Facebook page for more information. The fall season is also prime time for agritourism-based events that are centered around apples and pumpkins. Eckert’s will host their Pumpkin Festival at their Belleville and Millstadt locations, which will feature everything from apple and pumpkin picking to all kinds of family-fun entertainment and activities. Other farms worth a visit for pumpkins and more are Brauetigam Orchards in Belleville, Pumpkin Blossom Hill in Red Bud, and Schoenbeck Ranch near Ellis Grove. Make sure to follow social media pages for each venue for more details on hours of operation and more! If a good concert is more your speed, look no further than Songs4Soldiers – a HUGE event that has been hosted in Columbia the last several years. Dustin Row founded Songs4Soldiers, and admits his group is beyond pumped to
host this year’s event after cancelling the gathering in 2020. “We are unbelievably excited,” Row explains. “It took a year off for us to truly realize what not only the event means to the hundreds of combat vets we help, but also what the event means to the community. We are anticipating our biggest year yet as far as attendance goes.” Folks are already anticipating the talent for this year’s Songs4Soldiers concert, which will be country music star Josh Turner, and legendary rockers Night Ranger. Because it is an outdoor event, there is space for social distancing from a safety perspective. “Our event even during a normal year is very spread out. Folks can bring their own lawn chairs and blankets,” Row adds. “Of course folks that still feel the need to mask up can!” For those who have never attended, or perhaps never heard of Songs4Soldiers – the event goes towards an AMAZING cause. “One-hundred percent of the event’s proceeds goes towards our mission of helping combat veterans,” explains Row. ”Since 2013, S4S has served over 600 combat veterans and their families, spending over $700,000 on direct needs and assistance such as mortgage relief, rental relief, rent deposits, service animals, health care and so much more! But we offer a very affordable event for the whole family to attend. Five dollar beers, cheap kid activities, amazing local foods, and a laid back SAFE concert experience!” Songs4Soldiers is slated for September 17th and 18th in Columbia this year, and folks can visit songs4soldiersstl.org for more information. ECKERT'S PUMPKIN FESTIVAL IN BELLEVILLE
The City of Waterloo is VERY excited to announce the return of their PumpkinFest, which is set for Saturday, October 9th this year from 9am – 4pm. In terms of alterations to this year’s event, Community Relations Coordinator Sarah Deutch says the PumpkinFest committee is going to keep the health and safety of the public as a priority while planning this year’s event. “Some of the contests and activities of PumpkinFest that have a higher risk of COVID exposure may be altered or cancelled for this year,” Deutch says. “We will keep up to date on the current situation of the pandemic as we plan. If activities must be altered/ cancelled, we plan on replacing it with another fun activity!” PumpkinFest has become a family tradition that is cherished by many Monroe County natives. If you haven’t experienced it before, Deutch says the trip to Waterloo is well worth it. “Please come visit Waterloo during PumpkinFest and see what ‘Small Town Charm’ is really all about,” Deutch says. “PumpkinFest is located in the heart of downtown Waterloo, which is a historic walkable area with microbreweries, eateries, and unique shops and boutiques. Add the craft vendors, live music, games, and activities of PumpkinFest – and it makes for the perfect family fun fall day! To stay up to date on PumpkinFest, be sure to check out their website at www.waterloo.il.us/pumpkinfest. If a scenic drive is really what you are looking for, the Kaskaskia Cahokia Trail Road Rally is just the event for you! Slated for September 25th, the Road Rally will begin at the Holy Family Church in Cahokia, with registration taking place there between 9 – 11am. From there, participants will travel south on the Kaskaskia Cahokia Trail and have the chance to experience a dozen historical stops along the way. (618) 257-1488
WESTERN REGION
The Road Rally ends in Historic Prairie du Rocher where folks can check in for the after party between 4 – 6pm. The after party will feature family fun, including live music at 7pm, games for the kiddos, several food specials from local restaurants, and more. If you’re reading this and would like to register for the event, it is $25 to participate – and more information can be found online at kctrailillinois.org. One of the most historically unique events in ILLINOISouth can be found tucked away in Randolph County. Fort de Chartres lies a few miles south of Prairie du Rocher, and this Frech Fortification is worth the drive – no matter where you’re coming from. Aside from being open to visitors who would just like to experience the attraction, the Fort also plays host to the Annual Fort de Chartres Rendezvous. “The event brings in tens of thousands of visitors to the area, which generates a lot of revenue in the short duration the event happens,” explains Jason Duensing, Vice President of Events for Les Amis du Fort de Chartres, and Chairman of the Rendezvous Planning Committee. “Our participants buy a lot of their groceries for their stay at the event at our local stores, participants and visitors visit other local attractions and eat at our great selection of restaurants in the area. One of the most important aspects of the event is what it does to highlight the history of our community, which in my opinion is important for sustainability and growth.” This year’s celebration is actually the first one they have been able to have in a while. “To say that we are excited would be an understatement, we are ecstatic! It has been over 3 years since we had this event last, June of 2018,” Duensing adds. In 2019, we had to cancel due to the river being above flood stage and obviously last year due to Covid-19.” According to Duensing, the event will have their usual safety protocols with paramedics on site both days – and they will follow the latest CDC and State guidelines at the time of the event. The biggest change to this year’s event is the extra celebratory activities for the Fort’s 300th Anniversary, and for the 50th Anniversary of the Rendezvous itself. “We would like to note that the event will be starting an hour early on Saturday, 9:00am instead of 10:00am, to accommodate an acknowledgment ceremony to commensurate the 300th Anniversary of Fort de Chartres directly after Opening Colors,” says Duensing. “We are lining up some notable speakers for this ceremony, which will be something very special.” For those who have never attended the Rendezvous before, this is definitely something to mark your calendars for. “We are very excited to share the history of Fort de Chartres through this amazing event,” adds Duensing. “Our event is one-of-a-kind in this area and is one of the only places to see live Bagpipes, Fife and Drum bands, flintlock muzzleloader shooting, 18th century lifeways demonstrations, and much, much more at a partially reconstructed stone fort in the beautiful river bottoms of the Illinois Country. There is plenty to do and see for children and adults alike, you may want to plan to come to the event both days so you don’t miss out on anything.” The Rendezvous at Fort de Chartres is scheduled for September 11th & 12th, and more information can be found at fortdechartres.us. *Disclaimer: Unfortunately, the Popeye Picnic has been canceled this year. The decision was made after our print deadline. Let's hope that the Picnic will be back in 2022!*
This next event centers around a cartoon character known pretty much all around the world! Chester is the hometown of E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye the Sailor Man. The community has embraced Popeye to the fullest, and they celebrate the Sailor Man each and every year with an event called the Popeye Picnic. Due to the pandemic, last year’s 41st Annual Popeye Picnic was cancelled. The Popeye Picnic is always held the weekend after Labor Day, and if the event happens this year – they will be following all guidelines provided by the CDC and the State. Ken Wagner, Trustee for the Popeye Picnic Committee says this event will help Chester return to a sense of normal. “Our small community and the surrounding businesses rely on the Popeye Picnic for a boost in tourism,” Wagner explains. “Getting people back together to celebrate with family and friends is also important to our mental health.” The Popeye Picnic usually features an unveiling of a new Popeye Character statue somewhere within the community, as well as rides, food, a parade, entertainment and more. “Popeye and his friends are international favorites,” Wagner adds. “Most baby boomers grew up watching Popeye cartoons and they are still shown the world over every day. We’ve had visitors from all fifty states as well as many foreign countries and they all love Popeye. The Popeye Picnic also brings families and friends together to enjoy good food, great entertainment and celebrate their favorite hero for three days. Many plan their vacations around the Popeye Picnic.” At the time this publication was written, there were plans to move forward with this year’s event. In the possible case that things have changed, please check the Popeye Picnic page on Facebook as well as their webpage at popeyepicnic.com. The Historic Kaskaskia Church Annual Picnic & Tractor/Truck Pull is a great experience, based solely on its geography alone! Kaskaskia is an exclave of Illinois, lying WEST of the Mississippi River and accessible ONLY through Missouri. Event organizers say that enthusiasm is high for this year’s gathering after cancelling last year. In terms of safety, many of the event’s workers will be vaccinated, food will be served in covered containers, and booths will be spaced to avoid crowding. “This event is crucial to maintain the church complex and to continue offering services,” says Emily Lyons, Secretary of the Kaskaskia Church Committee. “This event has become a Homecoming to the many that have lived or visited family over the centuries,” Lyons adds. The Kaskaskia Church Annual Picnic & Tractor/Truck Pull is slated for September 5th, for more information please call 618-826-2667. Many events in our region attract folks from different counties and states, but there is one event in particular that draws people from other countries. The Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships hosted at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta brings in THOUSANDS of folks for a ten day span. This year is the 122nd year for the Grand which is the largest shooting event of its kind, with more than 20 events that shooters from all over the globe gather to compete in. Even if you’re not vying for the title of “Clay Target Champion,” it is still worth a visit to Sparta just to experience it! This year’s event kicks off with the AIM Grand Championships from July 30th – August 3rd, followed by the Grand American World Trap Shooting Championships which are slated for August 4th – 14th.

GREENVILLE ART WALK IN BOND COUNTY
Mark Your Calendars!
Visit Events Of All Kinds In ILLINOISouth’s Central Region Next up we’ll shine the spotlight on events that are happening this fall in our Central Region. This region consists of six counties – Bond, Clinton, Fayette, Marion, Perry, and Washington. We will kick things off in the Central Region with the Vandalia Farmers' Market, a great family-friendly event. The community was able to safely host the event last year through the pandemic, and the response was great. “We are so excited to host another season of the Vandalia, Illinois Farmers' Market,” says Jessica Hampton, Vandalia’s Tourism Director. “Our goal is to inspire and nurture a healthy community by building a local and sustainable food economy in an engaging downtown experience while showcasing local farmers and gardeners. The momentum from last year has fueled our downtown community and we can't wait to welcome new visitors!” After the success of last year’s inaugural season for the Vandalia Farmers' Market, the committee decided to expand this year’s events. “Our vendors this year have everything from plants and produce to farm‐raised meat and homemade sweets,” Hampton adds. “You can also find honey, eggs, and dairy products. We've expanded to include more artisans and crafters, as well! Each market will also feature activities from various community organizations and live music from local musicians!” In terms of safety precautions, the event is outdoors and vendors are adequately spaced. There are also hand sanitizers at each booth, and sanitization stations dispersed throughout the market. Masks are available at the Information Table at the entrance of the market. If you plan on attending the market this year, Hampton says there are plenty of other things to explore while you are in town. “Our market is in the heart of Downtown Vandalia, right across from the Vandalia Statehouse State Historic Site. With a number of other historical sites, shops, boutiques, and restaurants, you can easily make this a full day or weekend trip,” adds Hampton. The Vandalia Farmers' Markets take place every second Saturday, from May− October and run from 8 – 11am. Follow their Facebook 14

page at Vandalia, Illinois Farmers Market for specific information and updates for each market. Another event slated for downtown Vandalia this fall is the 4th annual Wine & Ale with Abe Street Fest. This gathering is put on by the Vandalia Historical Society, and they have plans for this to be the biggest and best year yet. “We have a wide assortment of food vendors and food trucks, many craft and artisan vendors, live musical entertainment all day and evening, commemorative Wine & Ale with Abe wine and beer glasses, and of course a variety of local and international wine and craft and domestic beer,” explains Susan Williams, President of the Vandalia Historical Society. The return of Wine & Ale with Abe is important to the entire community. It is held on the streets where Abe Lincoln walked in front of the historic Vandalia Statehouse. “We are inviting everyone to visit, there is something for everyone,” Williams says. “Food, music, arts and crafts, and of course beer and wine! Bring your lawn chairs or lawn blankets. Families with children are welcome.” The Wine and Ale with Abe Street Fest is slated for Saturday, September 25th from 12 – 8pm.
the perfect pumpkin – Happy Hollow Family Farm in St. Elmo and Schaefer Pumpkin Patch in Beecher City. Another great agritourism stop that is a little different than the ones mentioned above is Rainbow Ranch Petting Zoo in Washington County. If you visit the Ranch in October to experience the camels, kangaroos, zebras and other animals – you receive a pumpkin to take home with you. AMERICAN THRESHERMAN IN PERRY COUNTY
There are also several other places in our Central Region to pick out some fresh produce, and spend some time on the farm while you’re at it! Schwartz Orchard in Centralia is a great place for pick-your-own apples in the fall, and while you’re visiting make sure to pick up some of their award-winning apple cider. Speaking of apple cider, the apple cider donuts at Schwartz are well worth the drive to Centralia alone. If you make the trip without trying at least one, you should probably plan another trip! There are also plenty of places to pick out some pumpkins in the Central Region. Country Kids Pumpkin Patch in Hoyleton has 20 outdoor related games and activities from a corn maze to a scavenger hunt, and of course...pumpkin picking! In Fayette County there are two similar places to pick out (618) 257-1488

One event in Marion County is celebrating a major milestone this year. The Little Egypt Festival and Parade is celebrating its 50th year in 2021! This gathering was one of the many that decided to cancel in 2020, so it is imperative to the community that the event happens this year. “For 50 years, people have come to expect the food trucks, the craft vendors, the big wheel race, the car show, the horse show, the school marching bands, the fanfare of the parade floats, and the candy,” explains Kelley Predium, Committee Chairperson of Kids Activities for the Little Egypt Festival and Parade. “This event occurs on the first Saturday of October, and people are always prepared to support or participate in it. Everyone is excited about being able to build their floats this year and throw candy to the kids. The committee is excited to honor our Grand Marshall(s) and volunteers from over the years.” The Little Egypt Festival and Parade is an outdoor event, allowing patrons to come and go as they please from any of the several activities staged throughout the mile-long parade route all day long. “We will be providing shuttles from the courthouse to the Bryan Memorial Park all day long as well,” Predium adds. Event organizers are looking to increase the number of activities available this year, spread them out to allow distancing, increase the varieties in which the audience can participate, and add new activities later into the day. “This event brings so many different activities to one day and creates an enormous sense of community,” says Predium. “You can see the blankets and chairs line the parade route the night before. Every family is or has participated in some aspect of this event throughout their life. Most people have some story about how they were involved or something they have enjoyed from the day. Please come out and support local vendors, crafters, and food trucks, the 5K, kid's activities, the car show, and the parade. Please make plans to spend the day with us, enjoying everything we are putting together for you. We want this to be the best year ever,” adds Predium. This year’s Little Egypt Festival and Parade is set for October 2nd, so be sure to mark your calendars! The
other big thing happening in Salem this year is at the Bryan−Bennett Library. There will be a combined presentation of two very important exhibits happening simultaneously. “Voices and Votes, Democracy in America, is provided by the Smithsonian Institution’s Traveling Exhibition Service,” explains Kim Keller, Director of the Bryan−Bennett Library. The other exhibition is the Illinois Freedom Project, which tells the story of slavery to freedom in Illinois through the lens of people, places, and events from the early 18th century French settlements through early 20th century Chicago. “Voices and Votes explore the bold experiment of American democracy using exhibit panels, interactive stations, and video presentations, plus traveling trunks for teacher and school use,” Keller adds. the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and community partners began investigating the places that best represent the inspiring stories of the move from slavery to freedom in Illinois. “The goal of the project is to teach history and motivate youth by presenting inspiring stories of the past to inform and empower students to create a better future,” Keller explains. The combined exhibition in Salem provides a triple header experience whether you’re a history buff, a teacher, a patriot, or simply looking for new information and experience. “It opens on August 28th, just before the Labor Day weekend. life and heroic actions of the day with a special ceremony. Finally, the exhibition closes on October 2nd which is also the opening day of our Little Egypt Festival. In addition, each week will have a different set of special activities so, no matter your specific interest, there will be something for everyone during this time.” For more details and updates on the exhibits, visit salembbl.lib.il.us. Art enthusiasts will want to make a trip to Greenville for ArtWalk, a two−day event planned for the first weekend in October. This year ArtWalk will look a little bit different as some new activities have been added to the lineup. “We are adding a 5K, half-marathon, and bike race to our event,” explains Jes Adam, Tourism Director for the City of Greenville. “We’re calling the races ‘ArtRun’ and ‘ArtRace.’ These will take place on Saturday morning, October 2nd. RaceMaker Productions of Indianapolis will be organizing the races. Saturday morning also includes a Farmers Market and Flea Market! We will also have more craft beer, local wine vendors, and food trucks!” ArtWalk just returned to the Greenville in 2019 after a brief three year hiatus, and then missed last year due to the pandemic – so community leaders are excited to host it again. “Thankfully, we have taken the extra time to further develop this event into something that every human being will enjoy! ArtWalk brings in a lot of visitors to our area, which is also a blessing for our local economy and businesses,” Adam explains. For folks who have never attended ArtWalk before, Adam says it’s a great time not just for locals – but for anyone who simply enjoys art. “ArtWalk is a celebration of creativity in all its facets: sculpture, photography, dancing, music, street tacos, wine, and so much more,” he adds. ”If you enjoy the unending creativity of humanity, this event is for you.” For more information on the ArtWalk, ArtRun, and ArtRace, visit GreenvilleIllinois.com. Shop-a-holics will love this next event, which features plenty of locally made goods from VERY talented artisans. Warehouse 300 in Trenton will host Autumn Fest on September 18th and 19th from 10am to 4pm on both days. “This event was a big success last year despite Covid,” says Warehouse 300 owner Brenda Kohlbrecher. “So we’re anticipating bigger and better! This event includes over 40 extra outdoor vendors, in addition to our year-round vendors inside the warehouse, which includes the workmanship of over 30 local artisans – merchandise includes distressed furniture finds, repurposed goods, vintage, barn wood finds, primitive, shabby chic, crafts, metal works, and more.” Kohlbrecher adds that there will be limited numbers inside of the warehouse, with little to no wait time; along with hand sanitizer stations, and mask wearing will be at the customer’s discretion. There will be great food available as well. “This year we'll have two food trucks on site both days bringing traditional festival foods and beverages, along with gourmet sandwiches, desserts, BBQ and old fashion kettle korn,” Kohlbrecher adds. “This event is one of just a handful of events remaining in Clinton County and because of that, we will continue to do our best to bring a bigger and better Autumn Fest each year, in order to create a fun shopping experience for our customers,” says Kohlbrecher. Make sure to keep an eye on Warehouse 300’s Facebook page for more information. One of the more unique annual events that can be found in ILLINOISouth each year calls Perry County home. The American Thresherman Association holds two shows each fall, and they ALWAYS draw quite the large crowd to the Fairgrounds in Pinckneyville. The American Thresherman Association’s Advertising Chairman David Logsdon says this year’s events are scheduled for August 19th – 22nd, and October 15th – 17th. After missing both of the scheduled event dates in 2020, Logsdon says the group is chomping at the bit to have the American Thresherman show this year. “Our August show in particular plays an important part in adding an economical boost for the City of Pinckneyville, as well as the surrounding communities.” The August show features so many activities, it’s really hard to mention them all. But a few of the notable things that attract visitors are the ITPA tractor pulls each night, steam train rides (a big hit with children), broom making, rope making, wheat threshing and more! Logsdon says this year’s event will be very similar to shows from past years. “Our events are like a homecoming for many people,” he adds. “They come not only to enjoy seeing the ways of farming and various trades from the past, but to reunite with friends!” For more information regarding this event, visit americanthresherman.com.
FARMERS MARKET IN VANDALIA
That’s not all in terms of unique events for the community of Pinckneyville. The ‘Friendly Little City’ is known for its Annual Mardi Gras celebration, which is now in its 99th year! “The Pinckneyville Chamber of Commerce couldn't be more excited for the 2021 Mardi Gras,” says Ashley Bathon, Picnkneyville Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors Chairman. “We were able to have a 2020 event, but it was extremely scaled down due to the COVID−19 pandemic with no parade. So, we are super excited to be able to hold a full Mardi Gras celebration this year.” Bathon adds that event coordinators are working closely with city officials and the local health department to take all of the precautions necessary to be able to include the parade and other activities that they were not able to do in 2020. For those who are expecting to visit, Bathon says prepare for quite a good time! “The 99th Annual Mardi Gras will be a weekend packed with things to do for all ages and very family oriented,” Bathon explains. “The vendor fair takes up most of the day on Saturday with merchandise booths, food vendors, and kid friendly activities. Then, the night parade ends our celebration that evening with the drawing for the 50/50 at the end of the parade. Local shops will be open throughout the day and then most participate somehow in the parade that night.” If you have the chance to partake in this long-standing southern Illinois tradition, it is ALWAYS a one-of-a-kind experience. “We have been told that our Mardi Gras parade is the longest standing night−time parade in Illinois, and this is something that we are very proud of and excited to continue,” Bathon adds. “One of the long− standing traditions of Mardi Gras for Pinckneyville is the crowning of the Mardi Gras Queen, which takes place a few weeks before the celebration. This allows the crowned Queen to attend the celebration, ride in the parade, and get a feel for what she is reigning over for the next 12 months. The Mardi Gras Queen Pageant draws contestants from all over the region for a chance to wear our one of a kind crown and say that she is now on the long list of Mardi Gras Queens,” explains Bathon. For more details about this year’s Mardi Gras in Pinckneyville, visit pinckneyville.com/mardi-gras/. We’ll stick in Perry County, but head to Du Quoin for another iconic event in our region. The Du Quoin State Fair started back in 1923 and has since become one of the most popular gatherings in southern Illinois, attracting an estimated 300,000 folks each year! There are SO many entertainment options, from harness races and livestock competitions to concerts every day of the event. There are also plenty of vendors and a wide array of food options to sink your teeth into. Families will definitely want to take advantage of the carnival rides and games as well! The aforementioned concerts can be found at the free entertainment tent, the beer stage, and the Grandstands. Speaking of the Grandstands, there are some pretty notable acts that have been set for this year’s Du Quoin State Fair. En Vogue, REO Speedwagon, Ludacris, and Ron White are a few notables that are slated to perform this year! Fans of racing will want to head to the Fairgrounds on September (618) 257-1488

4th – 5th for ARCA and USAC races on the dirt track. This year’s event starts on August 27th and will go through September 6th, so be sure to check out the Du Quoin State Fair on Facebook for more information on pricing, tickets, and much more! Everyone loves hot air balloons, right? Whether they’re flying through the air in the morning or having a balloon glow at night, the colors and sheer size of the balloons are enough to make you stop whatever you’re doing, and just watch. Centralia Balloon Fest is the perfect event to just get lost in the wander of those large, amazing balloons. This annual event started back in 1990, and has done nothing but grow pretty much ever since. Balloon Fest was one of the few events in our region that did move forward with their gathering in 2020. “We learned a lot about our event from having a socially distant event in 2020, so we are happy to have the opportunity to bring back our event with some exciting changes,” said Marcus Holland, Executive Director for the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce. When it comes to health and safety precautions for this year’s Balloon Fest, the event is being held in Foundation Park – which has over one MILLION square feet. Within that space, vendors and volunteers will be encouraged to follow any guidelines closely, with signs and reminders for the attendees as well. “Certain activities and entertainment will be adapted in the park, and we are keeping our drive−through Balloon Glows in the community for anyone who wishes to stay in their vehicle and remain safe,” Holland adds. There are going to be a couple of other changes to this year’s event as well. “A second entertainment tent will be added to host more bands and entertainment,” explains Holland. “Our children's activity area will be separated into smaller activities throughout the park. Our car show will be moving to Fairview Park to allow more cars and motorcycles! We are adding more entertainment in the community, and businesses will be encouraged to have their own festivities,” adds Holland. One thing is for sure, there will be plenty to do for all who pay a visit to Centralia – whether it’s for one day or the whole weekend. “We have everything you need for a great weekend in Centralia. Families can see hot air balloons up-close and enjoy entertainment in the park,” Holland adds. “People who enjoy shopping can get their retail therapy with our craft vendors, balloon fest merchandise, and our community retail stores. Couples can enjoy our winery and restaurants while watching hot air balloons in the sky. Car and motorcycle enthusiasts can talk shop and admire their prized possessions. It is worth the trip and we hope you plan to stay for the whole three-day festival to see Centralia!” This event is extremely affordable for the whole family, at just $5 per person for the entire weekend. For more information on Centralia’s Balloon Fest, make sure to visit their website at centraliachamber.com/balloon-fest. Have FUN watching those balloons! Another area that is always good for a few events is Carlyle Lake – the largest man-made lake in the state. To take in the beauty of some truly amazing cars while visiting the lake,
you will definitely want to make room for this next event on your calendar. The Cruz−in the Dam Car Show Nationals at Carlyle Lake is slated for it’s 29th year, and features dozens of beautiful automobiles. When asked how excited they are for this year’s event, Dick Conner with Misfit Motorsports Productions simply said, “we are as excited as a bunny rabbit in a carrot patch!” Conner adds that while they will be adhering to any state safety guidelines regarding the event, there are no other changes set. Folks can expect the same wholesome, family friendly event with live entertainment and classic cars. “This is an important economic event for the local community,” Conner says. “It brings many tourists to the Carlyle Lake area.” The Cruz−in the Dam Car Show Nationals is scheduled for Friday, August 13th. For shoppers and pumpkin hunters, the Pick of the Patch Vendor Fair is right up your alley. This event is held on the third Saturday in October at the Dam West Recreational Area at Carlyle Lake. The event is always coordinated to coincide with the city’s annual Pumpkin Patch for children. The Pick of the Patch Vendor Fair did host folks in 2020, though the attendance was a little lean. When it comes to safety protocol, it’s an outdoor event with no distancing issues. “Since we have access to such a large, gorgeous venue, we are able to distance our vendor booths as well as move them back from the walkway,” explains Brenda Johnson, Co-Chair for the Carlyle Street Fair. “This gives shoppers space and also allows movement along the path without too much congestion. Of course, hand sanitizers will be prevalent throughout the area as well. We want our vendors and shoppers to be comfortable in their space.” There is a wide variety of goods to shop from, everything from hair bows and jewelry to wooden crafts and baked goods. On top of all of that, there will be plenty of food options and a giant boombox on wheels for musical entertainment! “I think folks love this event because it’s so energizing! It’s a beautiful time of year, and the venue itself is beautiful,” Johnson adds. “The food, music, and vendors are all outstanding. It’s probably the last outdoor event of its kind for the year. It’s a great mix of activity for the young and old alike, and it’s a full weekend of fun for all ages. The campgrounds are full, and the entire community is invigorated – that makes a big difference.” If you or anyone you know are avid triathlon fans, there is a new triathlon coming to Carlyle this year! Technically, 2020 was supposed to be the first year for the Carlyle Lake Triathlon – but of course it wasn’t able to happen. Sally Drake, Owner and Race Director of MSE Racing says this year’s race is a full−go, but they have taken one important safety precaution. “We have implemented a new race start to keep athletes more spread out and safe,” Drake says. “This came out of Covid but has been a change that we will stick with.” Although this event is new, Drake hopes that it will continue for years and years to come. “We are extremely thankful to be able to put on an event in this community,” adds Drake. “We realize that it can be frustrating when it holds up traffic, and closes the beach area − so we hope the community will come out to see the event and we would LOVE to have local volunteers.” The Triathlon is scheduled for Sunday, September 19th at 6:45am. Enjoy the race!

EASTERN REGION
FALL FESTIVAL IN MCLEANSBORO
Mark Your Calendars!
Visit Events Of All Kinds In ILLINOISouth’s Eastern Region Next up, we’ll focus on so many gatherings and events that are taking place in our Eastern Region this fall. This region is our largest, accounting for 12 counties – Clark, Clay, Crawford, Cumberland, Edwards, Hamilton, Jasper, Lawrence, Richland, Wabash, Wayne, and White. We’ll kick off with one of the most popular events in our Eastern Region which can be found in Hamilton County. The McLeansboro Kiwanis Club hosts the McLeansboro Fall Festival each year for the last 65 years. When it began, it was a one-day celebration called Dairy Days – it has since grown into a three-day event that is beloved by thousands of folks throughout southern Illinois. “What separates this event from others is the free, professional, worldwideknown entertainment,” explains Jerry Prince, Chairman of the Fall Festival’s Entertainment Committee and Past President as well. Over the years, they have had a ton of talent visit McLeansboro – from Sawyer Brown and the Oak Ridge Boys to Lee Greenwood and Confederate Railroad, along with many others. For this year’s event – the Fall Festival will host Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder on Thursday the 9th, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on Friday the 10th, and Exile on Saturday the 11th. The best part is, the McLeansboro Fall Festival costs folks nothing to enjoy, the concerts are all FREE – which is made possible from donations. “We have a very supportive business community,” Prince admits. “I feel great that they have enough confidence as I reach out to them to contribute, to make this all possible.” Aside from the entertainment, the McLeansboro Fall Festival has another component that makes it unique. Several years ago they added the Fox Hollow Downhill Derby Race to the list of activities, and it has been VERY well received. In the near future, they plan to offer those races for younger kids to participate from 7 to 8 years old, all the way to the age of 19. “I think that our festival is starting to take on a different atmosphere, because I think it might be becoming a southern Illinois staple,” Prince says. “We start getting calls right after our festival from people wondering when the next year’s event will be, and who will be performing. People like to plan class reunions, family reunions, vacations, 20
Fall 2021
or just passing through – and let those things coincide with our Festival.” In terms of any health precautions, Prince says they’ll follow any guidelines that the state and the department of health have in place. As an affiliate of the National/International Kiwanis Club – they will do whatever they can in order to stay in compliance, which is why they made the difficult decision to cancel last year’s Fall Festival. Another parallel celebration going on at the same time is the Bicentennial of Hamilton County. On February 8th of 1821, Hamilton County was formed from White County – so throughout this year there have been and will be gatherings to celebrate the occasion. In the 200 years of Hamilton County, there have been several remarkable individuals to contribute to history, including past Illinois Governor John Henry Stelle. Stelle was born in McLeansboro and went on to be a very key figure in writing the G.I. Bill of Rights in 1944. Prince says between the Fall Festival and the Bicentennial, 2021 is an extremely exciting time for folks in the community – and they can’t wait to have everyone in town. “We welcome everyone, and we’re very appreciative that we’re able to do what we’re doing,” adds Prince. The 2021 McLeansboro Fall Festival is slated for September 9th – 11th, so make sure to keep an eye on the McLeansboro Kiwanis Club Facebook page for any updates regarding the event going forward. Did you know that the Heath Bar was created in Robinson, Illinois? The fantastic toffee and chocolate bar has deep ties to the community of Robinson, which is why they have an event called the Heath Harvest Festival. This annual celebration features live entertainment, car show, parade, toffee demonstrations and so much more. Glenda Fulling, the President of the Heath Harvest Festival says that after taking last year off – the community is excited to have the event in the downtown square this fall. “It is very important to our community to host this event for our businesses to thrive and most importantly for our community residents and visitors,” Fulling explains. “This festival
brings a great deal of tourism to our community and we want to make their experience fun and safe. Not having the festival last year was hard on so many, so this year we want to invite our class reunions back, our yearly visitors back, as well as some new faces to our community. We have many businesses already on board to do their part to make this years festival the best ever.” Fulling adds that the Festival will definitely take the pandemic into account when it comes to this year’s event. “We will be making as many provisions as possible to ensure the safety of our guests with placing of our vendors, sanitation stations, and more,” Fulling says. “Most likely, our demographics for our vendors will change a bit in order to keep our vendors spaced properly for social distancing.” The 2021 Heath Harvest Fest is set for October 1st and 2nd, and you can visit their website for more information at heathharvestfest.com. Another community in Crawford County with a longrunning tradition is Oblong. The Oblong Fall Follies and Spooktacular Halloween Parade has become a fan-favorite over the last few decades, and the parade has been deemed the largest nighttime parade in the state! “We are extremely excited to be moving forward with the events this year,” says Diane Houdasheldt, President of Oblong’s Chamber of Commerce. “Our visitors and vendors safety will be our top concern and we will be following all needed safety precautions deemed necessary for all those attending our event,” Houdasheldt adds. Fall Follies has been a tradition for over 50 years in Crawford County. “People look forward to attending the entertainment, browsing the craft booths, enjoying the great food at many food vendors, and shopping our downtown stores. No matter how far people move away, coming home to share their memories with others is always a highlight,” Houdasheldt explains. For those who plan to attend the Fall Follies and Halloween Spectacular on Saturday, October 30th this year, Houdasheldt says the community welcomes you with open arms. “We would encourage people to be courteous and patient while attending this years' event but also come to enjoy the fun we have on (618) 257-1488

Halloween in Oblong, Illinois,” she says. “You can mark off on your bucket list that you have been here and plus attended the largest nighttime parade in Illinois!” For more details, check out the Oblong Chamber’s website at theonlyoblong.com. Sticking in Crawford County, but located a bit further east – we’ll dive into details on this year’s Wabash Valley Wine and Art Festival in Palestine! “This is an outdoor event held on the four blocks of Main Street in Palestine,” says Susan Goodwine, a committee member for the Wine and Art Festival. “We have changed the location for the walk-in/advance purchase pick up location,” she adds. “This year, it will take place in the historic Fife Opera House at 123 S. Main Street. This building will allow separate entrance and exit doors in addition to being a much larger facility to allow for social distancing.” Fifteen wineries are signed up to participate in the event this year by offering samples and wine for sale. Goodwine adds that the community is ramping up it’s efforts to provide visitors as many amenities as possible when they’re in town. “Two new restaurants have opened their doors for business. A new retail establishment and a bed/breakfast also plan to be up and running by October as well,” Goodwine says. “We’ll have art and craft vendors, live music on both days, food vendors and a Car Show on Sunday to round out the event.” Not only is this event a great time with great wine, but it is also for a good cause. “The money from this event goes back into projects for the community,” Goodwine adds. “In the past, it helped build the beautiful new pavilion where the entertainers perform during the festival, new playground equipment for our park, electrical upgrades and a sound system for Main Street, fireworks for the Christmas lighting at the park, a boat ramp on the Wabash River and several other projects. The Wabash Valley Wine and Art Festival is scheduled for the weekend of October 2nd – 3rd, and for more information you are encouraged to check out their brand-new website at palestinewinefest.com.
There is also plenty happening in White County this fall. Communities like Grayville, Enfield, Carmi, and Norris City are all gearing up to host an array of different events! The first of the bunch is Grayville Days, which is held each year on Labor Day weekend. Grayville Days is a staple of this small community, and usually features live entertainment, a parade, different dinners, and fireworks! Head to Carmi a couple of weekends later for Big Wheels on the Little Wabash Monster Truck Show, Mini Tractor Pull & Concert on September 18th. There will be live entertainment following the show featuring No Fences – The Garth Brooks Tribute Band at the White County Fairgrounds. Race enthusiasts will also want to visit the Carmi Airport for the Grudge Street Racing event on September 11th, 18th, and October 2nd. Make plans to visit Norris City the weekend following for Dairy Days on September 24th – 25th. They are celebrating their sesquicentennial, which is 150 years of Dairy Days,
so make sure to get out and enjoy the festivities! Another milestone event is set for October 1st and 2nd in Enfield. The community is celebrating their Mule Days event for the 100th time! “Mule Days is very important to Enfield and its identity,” explains Cindy Birk Conley, a representative for White County. “There is a Mule painted on the town’s water tower, most of the high school reunions are planned around Mule Days. Several of us have large collections of Mule Day t−shirts and sweats.” So why in the world is it called Mule Days? Well, Conley says that’s simple. “The event started out with mule auctions and judging, and today has baby, tot and Miss Mule Days pageants,” Conley says. “There have always been a lot of music and dances, chances for young people to have fun and adults to visit with friends. If you were a student at Enfield or now NCOE, you probably helped build a float for the parade or played in a school band. In recent years there have been large crowds for bingo, which

helps fund the event.” For those who consider themselves ‘farm to table’ foodies – you’ll want to check out the White County Farm to Table Dinner in Carmi on Thursday, October 7th. This event is to celebrate White County farmers and agriculture businesses. The money raised for this event will go to the White County FFA clubs. That weekend, the Carmi Kiwanis club is hosting their long-running Corn Days event on October 8th and 9th, which is always a good time. Just north of White County lies Edwards County, which hosts two very popular events in the fall. One will appeal to artists, and the other appeals to anyone who is hungry! The first on the calendar is the Albion Area Chamber of Commerce and West Salem Development Association’s “Albion Paint Out” scheduled for Saturday, September 25th. “We’re absolutely thrilled to host the 2021 Albion Paint Out,” admits Averi Goodman, Secretary for the Abion Area Chamber of Commerce. It has been a long time coming and we miss all of our favorite Plein Air artists.” Goodman says it was extremely important to get the Paint Out back up and art show and sale last year, it’s not the same as having the artists set up and accessible to talk to in person! They have quite a large following in Edwards County,” she explains. If you happen to be an artist that would like to participate in this event, the folks of Albion are happy to have you. “We’re surrounded by historical homes, buildings and landmarks,” adds Goodman. “You’ll enjoy your stay with folks who appreciate the talent each and every Plein Air artist shares with everyone!” For more details, give the Albion Paint Out a look on Facebook, or contact Averi Goodman at 618−445−7833. Whether you’re a spectator or an artist, we hope you enjoy your time! Now to the next event, which involves cooking a TON of food in absolutely gigantic pots. For those who have been to Albion, you’ve likely seen the signs that say ‘Chowder Capitol of the World.’ It’s a self−proclaimed title, but man oh man, do they know how to make some chowder in Albion. The City of Albion Chowder is held on the second Saturday of October, and it attracts folks from all over the place. The event did take place in 2020, but it was limited to drive-thru only. “That drive−thru worked very well,” admits Jessica Gwaltney, the Chamber President and Chowder Director. “We’re discussing that possibility again. We will have the pre-filled buckets again, as we have a sponsor for those.” To those who have never had Albion Chowder, it’s not like a New England-style chowder – and there are no clams in it. If you do decide to partake in this southeastern Illinois staple, here are a few tips from Gwaltney. “Get there early. Prepare to wait in line. Prepare for us to sell out quickly,” she admits. Aside from the fact that it’s delicious, there’s a reason why folks keep coming back until it sells out, year after year. “Tradition,” Gwaltney says simply. “It’s something that has evolved over the years but has held true to its roots. Something that started as family celebrations, turned in to small community celebrations, to large community celebrations has definitely held its place in our hearts.” Make sure to follow the City of Albion Chowder Facebook page for updates as the day gets closer! The county next door to Edwards is Wabash, and they have a couple of their own events planned for the next few months as well. Since we were just talking about chowder, we may as well continue with chili, right? The fall is just the right time to make a big pot of chili, and eat it all! If you consider yourself a chili champion, make plans to head to Mt. Carmel for the Wabash County Chamber Chili Cook-Off at Beall Woods State Park on October 2nd. Because the event is outdoors at a state park, social distancing won’t be an issue – but there will be extra PPE and hand washing areas set up. On top of the Chili Cook-Off, there are a couple of additions to the event this year. “We are adding a 5K Forest Run and the Little Mr. Harvest Prince contest as well as the Chili Cook-Off, Corn Hole Tournament, Washers Tournaments and Chili People's Choice event,” explains Lesley Hipsher, Executive Director of the Wabash County Chamber of Commerce. If you’re an avid runner, make a trip back to Wabash County towards the end of October for the Riverview Ramble – Half Marathon/ 10K/5K event. David James is President & COO of the Mt. Carmel Public Utility Company, and is working with local partners to provide the first half marathon ever hosted in Mt. Carmel. “Being the first year for the event, it’s importance is to the local community assistance programs who will receive the proceeds from the race and the local retailers and restaurants who will benefit from race

participants and spectators who may travel to Mt. Carmel for the event,” James explains. They are hoping to have food trucks on hand for the event as well, according to James. In terms of health and safety, they have that covered, too. “MCPU has partnered with Wabash General Hospital to provide race day emergency health services. All state mandated Covid−19 mitigation policies will be followed,” adds James. The event welcomes runners and walkers of all groups, to come enjoy a course that is mostly flat and highlights their beloved community. Enjoy that exercise! Now to Clark County, which is home to Marshall’s Autumn Fest – the biggest festival of the entire year throughout the county. “This event draws folks in from miles away,” says Jennifer Bishop, the Executive Director for the Marshall Area Chamber of Commerce. “Many of our small businesses, they base their entire year around being at the festival.” This is one of those types of events that has a little bit of everything for everyone. It is three days long and has activities ranging from a 5K and craft vendors, to food trucks and a HUGE parade, as well as live entertainment. Bishop says it’s been amazing to see how far Autumn Fest has come since it began. “This event started more than 25 years ago with $75 and has grown exponentially with community support and fundraisers. Each year more and more events and talent are brought into our rural community,” Bishop adds. The Autumn Fest is set up for September 17th – 19th this year, and you can always check out more information at marshallautumnfest.com. When it comes to the sheer amount of events, there may not be any other community that has more going on this fall than Olney. There are a handful of different events to dive into, and they all bring something different to the table, depending on your interests. We’ll kick it off with a free event, everyone loves free, right? The Olney Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Olney Bicycle Classic on September 18th. Because it is an outdoor event, social distancing will not be a problem – but they will be following any reduced capacity specifications at that time. On top of being a fun, free event – it also spotlights the incredible local bicycle industry in and around Olney. Keep an eye on Olney’s Chamber of Commerce website for more details on the event at olneychamber.com. Fans of art will be intrigued by the Olney Arts Council Fall Festival, which is planned for Saturday, September 25th. Much like many other events, the OAC Fall Festival has had the discussion about sanitation areas, distancing, and mask regulations – and they will follow any guidelines deemed necessary by IDPH. Keegan Tucker, the President of the Olney Arts (618) 257-1488

Council says the group is also considering other changes to the event. “We are always brainstorming ways to make the event better than the last and we have some ideas up our sleeve we are excited to see come to fruition,” Tucker says. “We think the public will enjoy the changes and additions we are looking to make.” Getting the OAC Fall Festival reignited after 2020 will also provide a boost to the community. “This event brings many individuals from outside our community into Olney for a day. This is great for our local businesses and restaurants. We are so looking forward to being able to support artists, vendors, and local businesses/restaurants once again in the same manner we have seen before with our Fall Festival,” Tucker explains. ”This event also helps to raise funds for other outreach projects we do throughout the year. Having this event will help boost what we are able to put back into our community for art enriching opportunities.” For more information on the Olney Arts Council, visit olneyartscouncil.com. Another art-themed event that Olney is hosting over the span of several months is Olney Walldogs, Mad Dog 2020+1. If you recall, we did a detailed write-up in the 2020 Spring/ Summer edition of the Tourism Times, because it is a huge event that folks in Olney had been planning for years. “We had been working since 2017 to host this large event in 2020. COVID−19 completely changed all of our plans surrounding the project, so we have had to move forward with a different scope, but we will be completing the same goal,” explains Kelsie Sterchi, Olney’s City Clerk and a Co−Chair for the Walldogs event. In terms of the different scope that Sterchi mentioned, the event is now taking place in several different increments – among other substantial changes. “We have chosen to complete 2−3 murals each month from May to October,” Sterchi adds. We will also only be having the amount of artists present that are needed to complete the art. We will not be bringing in 200 from all over the world, and will no longer be offering host housing for the artists.” There will be some virtual engagement for those who are interested, and while pretty much everything has changed – the community will still be left with beautiful murals that depict their rich history. “Visitors from near and far will be able to enjoy the mural walk that we will also create in the future with a publication to guide visitors along,” adds Sterchi. For more information on when and where in the community the murals

are being created each month, visit olneywalldogs.com for all of the details – and give them a follow on Facebook! The next event we’re about to mention is simply unique. If you have been to Olney, you have heard of their beloved White Squirrels. Did you know that each year they host their Annual Squirrel Count? This event was another one of the few that operated last year, because it is outside and everyone is scattered around town counting squirrels – so it’s the perfect activity in terms of being safe and socially distant! So the big question is, why in the world is everyone counting squirrels? “Our white squirrels are a source of great pride to Olney residents, and a point of interest for visitors from near and far,” Sterchi says. “The count helps us to track the health and population of our white squirrels while noting any additional influences that may contribute to the year’s numbers. Attendees have said it’s like “a natural scavenger hunt” and love to explore Olney’s neighborhoods.” It is never too early to volunteer for the Squirrel Count! If interested, contact Sterchi at cityclerk@cityofolney.com. Volunteers can participate in one or more dates. The dates of this year’s Annual Squirrel Count will be October 2nd, 9th, and 16th. The final event to dive into for Olney is being held in August, and will be of interest to car enthusiasts! The White Squirrel Car Club is hosting its 34th Annual Tractor and Car Show at the Olney City Park on August 21st – 22nd. As may be expected, the group is over the moon to have this year’s event because it was cancelled along with so many others in 2020. According to Jeff Lathrop, WSSC’s Tractor and Car Coordinator – there will be a few changes to this year’s gathering. “Some of the new events planned for this year is a 6−mile tractor drive and car cruise in downtown Olney and Miller Park, and possibly a petting zoo,” explains Lathrop. Although this is not the longest running event in the community, Lathrop says it has grown quickly since its debut six years ago. “The WSSC tractor started in 2015 as a few tractors on display, to now with many children events, flea market, auctions and etc. The WSSC tractor and car show has continued to grow with the wonderful support of our businesses, organizations, and clubs,” he adds. If you would like to check out more details about the White Squirrel Cruisers and this event, look them up on the web at whitesquirrelcruisers.com. We hope you found something to do this fall, because the events are full steam ahead!
