Il Summit si è svolto in una location d’eccezione, il Castello Reina a Xian, in Cina, un paese importante, in forte espansione in diversi ambiti, tra cui, inaspettatamente quello del vino, soprattutto grazie ad aziende come Changyu che hanno creduto nel potenziale di questo settore, investendovi.

ILLVA SARONNO AND INNOVATION: “SHARING THE KNOWLEDGE FOR SHAPING THE FUTURE.” Along with its principal international partners — Changyu China, Modi Group India and Walsh Whiskey Distillery Ireland — Illva Saronno, a great Italian multinational which operates in more than 160 countries across the globe, recently hosted an important summit in China titled “Sharing the knowledge for shaping the future”, having as special guests its principal commercial partners from all over the world.

Il Summit, dal forte respiro internazionale, ha visto la partecipazione di relatori del calibro di Ian Bremmer, Presidente e fondatore di Eurasia Group e noto columnist del Time, e Spiros Malandrakis, dell’Euromonitor Research, che hanno ipotizzato i futuri scenari possibili del mondo del consumo e del mercato in generale.

Ian Bremmer, scienziato politico e giornalista, definito da The Economist il guru del political risk, ha messo in luce le macro variabili che secondo lui determineranno i cambiamenti nei prossimi 10 anni a livello economico e politico. Spiros Malandrakis, ha immaginato i mutamenti del mercato e i nuovi trend di consumo, in base a variabili quali la demografia, l’accesso al consumo e l’instabilità politica ed economica, evidenziandone i fattori d’impatto come l’innovazione tecnologica e di prodotto.

Gli altri relatori sono stati Augusto Reina, Amministratore Delegato Illva Saronno Holding, Stefano Battioni, Amministratore Delegato Illva Saronno Spirits, Umesh Modi, Presidente di Umesh Modi Group, Bernard Walsh, Amministratore Delegato Walsh Whiskey Distillery, Zhou Hong Jiang, Direttore Generale di Changyu Pioneer.

The keenly international Summit entailed the participation of speakers of the caliber of Ian Bremner, President/Founder of the Eurasia Group as well as prominent columnist for Time magazine, and Spiros Malandrakis, senior alcoholic drinks analyst at Euromonitor Research. Each talked about hypothetical future scenarios in the consumer world and in the market overall.

Political scientist/journalist Ian Bremmer, the guru of political risk according to The Economist newsweekly, discussed the macro variables which in his opinion will determine economic/political changes likely to occur in the next ten years. As for Spiros Malandrakis, he explained his vision both of market changes and of new consumer trends on the basis of variables such as demography, access to consumption and political/ economic instability, along the way highlighting the factors (e.g. technological and production innovation) that will impact the situation.

Si è poi continuato con un programma che ha unito la cultura e la storia cinese con il business, culminando con la visita della Wine City e dello stabilimento di Changyu a Yantai, un vero e proprio concentrato di tecnologia e innovazione che ha visto impegnata Illva Saronno nella fase di progettazione, e capace di produrre, in modo estremamente efficiente, 600 milioni di bottiglie di vino l’anno.

Illva Saronno continua il suo viaggio verso il futuro, sognando, ricercando, esplorando e sperimentando per dar vita a progetti sempre più innovativi e all’avanguardia in ogni angolo del mondo.

The Summit proceeded with a program pivoting on the union between business and Chinese culture and history. Then it culminated with a visit to Wine City and the Changyu winemaking operation in Yantai, an authentic concentrate of technology and innovation that involved Illva Saronno’s participation in the design and development phase. Currently, this ultra efficient operation produces 600 million bottles of wine per year.

Fondata nel 1933 da Raj Bahadur Gujar Mal Modi, Modi è uno dei più importanti gruppi del mercato indiano che opera in molti settori quali la cosmetica, la farmaceutica, lo zucchero e gli spirits. WALSH WHISKEY DISTILLERY - (IRLANDA) Nel 2013 Illva Saronno ha siglato una partnership con Walsh Whiskey Distillery, produttore di premium whiskey: The Irishman e Writers Tears, che ha visto la costruzione di una distilleria in Irlanda, sulle sponde del fiume Barrow, a Royal Oak, nella Contea di Carlow. La distilleria è stata inaugurata il 21 giugno 2016 ed ha una capacità produttiva annua di 600.000 casse di puro Whiskey Irlandese.

Illva Saronno has a 50% interest in a Joint Venture with Modi for the distillation and importation of spirits. Also, together the two groups launched Whiskey Rockford (a blend of Scotch whiskey and the finest Indian malts and grain alcohols) which in just three years has gained a leadership position on the Indian premium whiskey market. It is bottled at the Modi Nagar distillery near Delhi (opened in 1959), which now produces top-quality spirits thanks to the use of innovative technologies and to technical collaboration with Illva Saronno.

WALSH WHISKEY DISTILLERY (IRELAND) In 2013, Illva Saronno signed a partnership agreement with Walsh Whiskey Distillery, maker of two premium whiskeys, The Irishman and Writers Tears. The agreement involved the construction of a distillery in Ireland, along the banks of Barrow river, in Royal Oak, in the County of Carlow. Officially opened on June 21, 2016, it boasts an annual production volume of 600,000 cases of pure Irish whiskey.

CHANGYU - (CINA)

Illva Saronno detiene il 33% del gruppo Changyu, società cinese leader nella produzione, vendita e distribuzione di vino e brandy in Cina con un fatturato di circa 800 milioni di dollari, oltre ad essere la prima società al mondo proprietaria di 20.055 ettari di vigneti. Illva Saronno ha collaborato con Changyu nella realizzazione di un progetto, fino a qualche anno fa inimmaginabile, ovvero la creazione di una maestosa Wine City, un luogo tanto imponente quanto suggestivo. I castelli europei, poi, sono stati la fonte d’ispirazione, tanto che nell’area ne sono stati costruiti addirittura 8. Completata nel 2016, la Wine City è oggi un polo di produzione vinicola d’eccellenza che ricopre un’area di 6.200 acri e che comprende diverse aree funzionali: il Grape and Wine Research Institute, il Wine Production Center, il Castello Tinlot e il Castello Kojak Brandy, il Grape Planting Demonstration Park, il Pioneer International Trading Center e la Città del Vino Hayner. Un sito produttivo avveniristico e autonomo che, dalla vendemmia alla pigiatura, dalla fermentazione alla vinificazione sino ad arrivare al processo di invecchiamento, riuscirebbe a immettere, esclusivamente per il mercato cinese, 600 milioni di bottiglie all’anno (circa 25.000 bottiglie all’ora). Changyu (China) Illva Saronno owns 33% of the Changyu group, a Chinese leader in the production, distribution and sale of wine and brandy in China. With an annual sales volume of 800 million dollars and an estate of 20,055 hectares of vineyards, it is the world’s leading winemaker. Illva Saronno worked with Changyu on a project quite unimaginable up until a few years ago: namely, the creation of Wine City, a majestic place, so amazingly impressive and evocative. European castles comprised the source of inspiration for this city, which is why it includes a total of eight built expressly for the project. Completed in 2016, Wine City is presently a premium winemaking hub that covers an area of 6,200 acres and features diverse structural elements: the Grape and Wine Research Institute, the Wine Production Center, the Tinlot Castle and the Kojak Brandy Castle, the Grape Planting Demonstration Park, the Pioneer International Trading Center and the Hayner Wine City. It is a futuristic and autonomous production site which — from grape harvest to pressing, from fermentation to vinification, all the way to the ageing process — is able to distribute 600 million bottles of wine a year on the Chinese market alone (around 25,000 bottles per hour). IL CASTELLO REINA

Il Castello Reina a Xian, sorge nell’ex capitale della dinastia Qin ed è circondato da 73 ettari di vigne, dalle quali si attende una produzione di vini d’eccellenza per 3.000 tonnellate. All’interno è incluso un centro di produzione vinicola, mentre nel seminterrato si estende la più grande cantina del continente asiatico (15.800 mq), che può contenere fino a 150.000 botti in legno. Le botti sono realizzate con 20 varietà di legno differenti, fatte arrivare in Cina da tutto il mondo.

THE REINA CASTLE The Reina Castle in Xian, which rises in the former capital of the Qin dynasty, is surrounded by 73 hectares of vineyards that produce the grapes for making 3,000 tons of excellent wine. It enfolds a wine production center, in addition to the largest wine cellar on the Asian continent — a 15,800 sqm space able to hold up to 150,000 wooden barrels. These barrels are made from 20 different types of wood, which Changyu imports from across the globe.

INTERVISTA AD AUGUSTO REINA, DEFINITO DA VOGUE ITALIA ANCORA “RAGAZZINO” Ci parli di Illva Saronno, della famiglia e dell’azienda.

“La strategia di Illva, in tutti i settori nel quale opera, si poggia su 4 pilastri fondamentali. La diversificazione rispetto alla concorrenza, per sfruttare al meglio le nostre caratteristiche peculiari, l’innovazione e non solo quella di prodotto ma anche quella commerciale, il valore perché l’azienda si autofinanzia ed essendo totalmente privata ha per natura una visione che gestisce il breve sempre pensando agli effetti nel lungo termine e le persone che ne fanno parte alle quali è richiesta non solo la professionalità ma anche la passione per il proprio lavoro.

Tutto ciò è possibile perché Illva Saronno è indipendente e questa è la caratteristica più importante dell’azienda.”

Perché scegliere di investire proprio in Cina?

“Devo confessarlo, la prima volta che andai in Cina, più di 10 anni fa, la qualità del vino non era eccellente, ma nonostante questo intravidi del potenziale in questo paese… e non mi sbagliavo! Oggi il vino cinese è un vino di qualità, tanto da essere stato inserito nella carta dei vini al G20 di Amburgo. Nel 2013, inoltre, la Cina è diventato il primo paese al mondo per consumo di vino rosso, con numeri che continuano a crescere, ed è anche questo che ci ha spinti verso questo paese. Non è stato facile intraprendere questo percorso, le trattive con Changyu sono durate ben 3 anni; alla fine abbiamo trovato un accordo e Illva Saronno ha assunto una quota di capitale significativa in Changyu. Il patto, inoltre, ha anche avviato uno scambio culturale approfondito, i viticoltori di Illva Saronno si sono recati in vari siti Changyu per formare i nuovi colleghi, e lo staff di Changyu è venuto in Italia in un tour di degustazione. Noi abbiamo aiutato Changyu a selezionare le uve da coltivare e a spiegare in che modo ottenere dei vitigni come quelli italiani. Loro invece ci hanno aiutato dal punto di vista tecnologico supportandoci nella selezione di macchine per la produzione e per le linee di imbottigliamento.”

INTERVIEW WITH AUGUSTO REINA, IN THE WORDS OF THE ITALIAN VOGUE “STILL A BOY AT HEART” Tell us about Illva Saronno, your family and company - Illva’s strategy rests on four fundamental pillars, no matter what the sector it’s operating in. They are: diversification w.r.t. the competition, so as to make the most of our distinct characteristics; innovation, on commercial as well as product levels; true value, because ours is a totally private, self-funding company that thus by nature has a vision where managing the short-term means always keeping in mind the long-term effects; and the people who are part of the company, of whom we ask not only professionalism but also passion for their work. All this is possible because Illva Saronno is independent. That’s the company’s most important feature.

Why did you choose specifically to invest in China? - I must confess, the first time I went to China, more than ten years ago, the quality of the wine was not excellent. Nevertheless, I saw that the Country had potential… and I wasn’t wrong! Today, Chinese wine is a quality wine, so much so that it got included in the wine list at the G20 meeting in Hamburg. In 2013, moreover, China became the world’s biggest consumer of red wine. And the numbers keep growing, which is another reason why we have taken such a strong interest in this country. Pursuing this path wasn’t easy. The negotiations with Changyu took a full three years.

In the end we came to an agreement, and Illva Saronno acquired a significant share in Changyu capital.

In addition, the agreement set in motion an in-depth cultural exchange: Illva Saronno’s winegrowers went to various Changyu sites to train their new colleagues, and the Changyu staff came to Italy on a tasting tour. We helped Changyu select the grapes to cultivate; we also explained how to obtain wine varietals like the kind we have in Italy. They, rather, helped us from the technological viewpoint, giving us a hand in the selection of machinery for the winemaking and for the bottling process.

“Ricordo di aver letto … Napoleone disse: “Quando la Cina si sveglierà, il mondo tremerà” e i passi da gigante che il Paese della seta ha fatto solo nell’ultimo decennio dimostrano che aveva ragione. ”

In futuro saranno costruite altre città del vino?

“Per ora c’è da completare quella di Yantai, poi se il mercato continuerà ad avere i tassi di sviluppo attuali, la costruzione di altri stabilimenti capaci di dare qualità ed efficienza elevata sarà un fatto naturale. Certo è che io e la mia famiglia non ci fermiamo e guardiamo sempre avanti, con passione e determinazione, sempre alla ricerca di nuovi stimoli.”

I remember reading some memorable words of Napoleon Bonaparte: “When China awakens, the world will tremble.” And the giant steps the Land of Silk has taken in the last decade alone show that Napoleon got it right.

Will other wine cities be built in the future?

“For now we have to complete the one in Yantai. Then, if the market keeps expanding at the current rate, the construction of other production centers able to provide high standards of quality and efficiency will develop naturally. For sure, me and my family will keep moving and looking forward, with passion and determination, always in pursuit of fresh stimuli and exciting new incentives.”

In Argentina, nel noto locale All Saints Cafè, tra una tazza di caffè, un drink e della buona musica di Puli Demaría, gli ospiti sono stati trasportati nel mondo della cultura del caffè grazie all’intervento dell’ospite d’eccezione, giornalista e sommelier del caffè, Nicolàs Artussi.

A seguire i partecipanti hanno potuto osservare Martìn Olivera, Brand Ambassador argentino, destreggiarsi tra uno shaker e l’altro nella realizzazione di Coffee Cocktail a base di Tia Maria.

In Australia Tia Maria ha collaborato con la torrefazione Welcome Dose Specialty Coffee situata nel quartiere di Rosebery, al fine di lanciare il progetto sul commercio e sui media di Sydney.

In loco il Brand Ambassador Matteo Fabbris e i co-proprietari del locale Kit Cheong e Michael Cookson, sono riusciti a creare un’esperienza unica per gli amanti dei coffee cocktail, attraverso la passione per il loro lavoro. In Irlanda, è stata la volta del Twofifty Square Venue, la migliore torrefazione del paese. Un luogo ampio , curato nei minimi dettagli che ha accolto il progetto Tia Maria Academy e tutti i suoi appassionati.

Evidente e distintiva la goffratura premium che contraddistingue il nuovo look con la firma di Edward Greenall, lo stemma di famiglia e “1761”, anno della prima produzione, a garanzia dell’autenticità e della qualità di questo prodotto.

Sull’etichetta, spicca inoltre la bandiera Union Jack, simbolo della Gran Bretagna che va a sottolineare ulteriormente le origini 100% British del secondo standard gin più venduto in UK. Rinnovata anche la bottiglia di Greenall’s Wild Berry, il gin ispirato ai sapori e ai profumi delle bacche selvatiche.

Greenall’s, The Original London Dry Gin distributed in Italy in exclusive by Illva Saronno, now has a fresh new look. It’s all about the bottle, which has undergone a restyling on both design and packaging fronts.

The restyling marks a return to origins for this unique artisanal gin dating all the way back to 1761, for it clearly references some of the bottles found in the archives of the storied distillery.

Highlight of the new look is the premium embossing with Edward Greenall’s signature, his family crest and the founding year “1761” — so guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of the product.

Another outstanding feature of the new label is the Union Jack flag, symbol of Great Britain, further underscoring the 100% British origins of the second standard gin most sold in the U.K. Greenall’s Wild Berry Gin, so deliciously flavourful, has a new bottle, too.
