Intermax delivers hoppers Intermax Logistics Solutions Ltd, a member of the Cargo Equipment Experts (CEE) network in China, was contracted to deliver 200 hopper railcars to Venezuela by CSR Meishan Co Ltd. CSR is a manufacturer of railway vehicles in Sichuan Province, located in the southwest of the People’s Republic. Intermax delivered the first lot of 140 railcars to Shanghai Terminal during July 2013; the consignment was loaded onboard a chartered vessel and shipped out in just two days. The remaining 60 cars were shipped earlier in August. The hopper railcars had to be stowed below-deck and were non-stackable, which limited the number of suitable ocean going vessels that could be chartered for the project. Each shipment was delivered to Puerto Ordaz, an inland port located in Northeast Venezuela. source : inter-max.net

PANOPA Group growing in Hungary A well-known German automaker has contracted PANOPA Logistik Magyar Kft. in Győr, Hungary to perform extensive transport and logistics tasks. The services that the Hungarian company belonging to the PANOPA Group will carry out for the OEM include operation of a warehouse measuring over 60,000 square metres, order picking work, handling empties and shuttle shipments. “From the warehouse we ensure precise delivery of the components to the assembly lines at the automobile plant seven kilometres away by means of our own trucks,” explains Rémy Hoeffler, Managing Director of PANOPA Logistik Magyar. Vehicle production was launched in June. The company will reach full-scale operation presumably in February 2014. “By then we will increase the number of employees to more than 100,” says the managing director. In full-scale operation he expects a volume of several thousand large and small load carriers that have to be handled every day at the logistics centre. Aside from this order, PANOPA Logistik Magyar also manages empties for the same automaker at the latter’s engine plant, which has been in operation in Győr for nearly 20 years and is considered to be the biggest of its kind in the world. “As of September, we will have more than 150 employees there and move several thousand large load carriers every day as well as a number of small load carriers in the five-digit range,” adds Rémy Hoeffler: “At the Györ location we will handle complete empties management for the OEM.” Through these two new orders the PANOPA Group further expands its activities in Eastern Europe. “For us Hungary and Poland remain major growth markets in which we want to continue to push forward step by step,” emphasises the managing director. source : panopa.com 12

P2P e-Logistics Announces Charity Partner P2P e-Logistics the order fulfilment and distribution division of the P2P group, has revealed its partnership with international water charity, Just a Drop, which brings clean, safe water and suitable sanitation to communities across the world. P2P e-Logistics offers a complete fulfilment and distribution package to retailers and companies operating in a range of markets, such as travel & tourism and IT. As well as catering for UK retailers looking to expand their business into global markets, P2P also provides the platform for overseas retailers wanting to expand their UK and European business. Just a Drop was founded and launched by Fiona Jeffery OBE in 1998 as an International water aid charity. Working with local partners at a grassroots level, the organisation aims to reduce the level of child mortality caused by poor sanitation and unsafe water in some of the poorest communities in the world. To date it has delivered over 130 projects across 30 countries, bringing clean, safe water to approximately 1.5 million people. Each time the charity or any of its staff refer companies to P2P for fulfilment and distribution services, P2P will make a donation to Just a Drop. Michael Fletcher, Managing Director of P2P e-Logistics comments, “Just a Drop is a fantastic charity and we are delighted to be able to offer our support. It’s extraordinary to think that every 20 seconds a child dies as a result of a water related disease, when clean water is something that so many of us take for granted. We are very much looking forward to developing this partnership further in the future.” Fiona Jeffery, OBE, Chairman and Founder of Just a Drop added “We are hugely grateful to P2P e-Logistics for their support. If we can encourage people to give just a little then collectively it will make a huge difference and allow us to bring clean, safe water to even more children and communities across the world.” source : p2pe-logistics.co.uk www.indonesialogisticsonline.com | vol. # 11 | XI | SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2013

BLG completes wind farm projects Construction work on the Global Tech 1 wind farm, located in the North Sea, got underway in September 2012. Its foundation structures are currently being transported to the construction site from BLG Logistics Group’s (BLG) offshore terminal in Bremerhaven, Germany, onboard the installation vessel Innovation. A further 51 tripods, each measuring 60 m high and weighing over 90 tonnes, have already been installed at the offshore site. Engineering and construction firm Hochtief Solutions commissioned BLG for the transport of tower segments and nacelles for the Global Tech 1 wind farm. BLG loaded the first tower segments for the wind turbines on to the transport barge Stralsund at the Ambau GmbH manufacturing site in Bremen. BLG organised the sea fastening of the components and their onward transport to Bremerhaven. Using SMPTs, BLG transported the nacelles and related components from their storage location at Areva Wind to Bremerhaven’s Labradorhafen, before safely loading them onto a pontoon that was towed to the ABC-Halbinsel offshore terminal, also located in Bremerhaven. There, the components will be transferred onto the installation vessel Thor, which will complete their installation in the German North Sea. source : blg.de 14

The modules formed part of a South Korean oil rig, presently under construction. Weighting upto 122 tons per piece the tank-modules got transported by special trailers from Dudweiler to Saarbrücken Port where loading onto two chartered Mosel River vessels took place. Kübler’s road transport had to maneuvre a considerable distance against normal traffic direction, twice the security rails on the roads had to be crossed, a great number of traffic lights had to be dismantled and a railway tunnel with only 10 cm airdraft had to be cleared. GPLN member Maritime Synergy beats the constraint of loading space Last month Maritime Synergy (Thailand) Co., Ltd., a GPLN member based in Laem Chabang, Thailand, handled the oversized shipment of a 40’Flat Rack container out of Laem Chabang port to the final destination in Columbia. MST was fully responsible for the loading, lashing, transport, and delivery of a gigantic loom; used in textile industry, with unit weights of over 40 MT from the shipper’s premise to the hands of actual consignee. The size of the cargo made the move complicated and difficult as the entrance and loading area in the shipper’s premise was very narrow. Since the factory is located in Bangkok where riving trailers are strictly forbidden to operate between 5-9 am and 3-8 pm, MST had to manage the delivery time with the shipper. Since the value of the cargo was over 400,000 USD, MST had to make sure that this expensive cargo wouldn’t toss and turn and was safely secured for this delicate transportation. source: gpln.net

UK to Egypt - Project Case Study 29 ton Steel Cable Reel shipped as out of gauge cargo from Aberdeen to Alexandria. Tuscor Lloyds recently took on the transportation of an oversized cargo from Aberdeen, UK to Alexandria, Egypt. The shipment of this 29 ton steel cable reel was carried out for a client in the oil and gas industry. The cable reel had to be transported on a 40ft flat rack container as out of gauge cargo due to its dimensions: 2.7 x 2.1 x 2.8 metres. A heavy lift crane was used to lift the cargo onto a 40ft flat rack container which would be used to keep the cargo secure during transportation. The cargo was secured to the flat rack using steel wire, wooden chocks and heavy duty ratchet straps which would ensure the cargo was be completely secure for the journey from the UK to Egypt. The cargo was transported from the warehouse in Aberdeen to the Port of Felixstowe using a step frame truck which had to be loaded using a heavy lift crane which could handle the weight of the cargo and the 40ft flat rack container which it was secured to. Once the truck arrived at the Port of Felixstowe the cargo was again checked to ensure it was sufficiently secured to the flat rack, after it was cleared it was loaded onto the vessel using dock side cranes which could handle the total weight. The cable reel was efficiently and successfully transported thanks for the vast experience and knowledge of the Tuscor Lloyds Project Management Team. The cargo arrived at the Port of Alexandria, Egypt 13 days after it left the warehouse in Aberdeen much to the satisfaction to everyone concerned. source: powerlogisticsasia2013.com tuscorlloyds.com

Ruslan International - Lords of the Ring Fitting square pegs into round holes is all part of Ruslan International’s daily work. But one piece of mining machinery set a particularly interesting challenge. STL Logistics, in conjunction with Panalpina, were tasked with forwarding a bearing ring from Dusseldorf, Germany to Port Hedland, Australia. However, with a diameter of 6.74 metres, shipping options were few, with even the extensive 6.4 metre width of the An-124-100 seeming too restrictive. “When we first saw the details of this shipment, the immediate reaction was that it wouldn’t fit,” admits Paul Furlonger, Ruslan International Sales Director. “But we’re accustomed to achieving the seemingly impossible.” Dmytro Kurko, Load Planning Engineer, was set the task. He promptly designed a frame which secured the ring at a precise angle of 20.1 degrees from the horizontal. This method then allowed the ring to be loaded into the An-124-100 with just 48-61mm clearance. Volga Dnepr Airlines operated an An-124-100 into Dusseldorf on 2 July to load the bearing ring. After three hours, the painstaking loading process was complete and the aircraft departed on schedule for Port Hedland. source: ruslanint.com

statement, customers are also often impressed by A Plus Warehouse dock equipment in general. A Plus Warehouse sells several types of dock equipment including but not limited to dock plates, dock boards, wheel chocks, dock levelers, dock seals and various others. A Plus Warehouse has been in the business of selling dock equipment for many years. Dock lifts are one of the many lines available in the dock equipment section. Every loading dock needs a dock lift. Dock lifts in this situation are the best option. The heavy duty dock lift is obviously used to lift heavy objects. The product has a 20,000 pound capacity. It is shown to the image on the right. The item also includes maintenance strut to support lift during maintenance and removable lifting eyes for easy installation. It also is weatherproof. UK to Qatar - Project Case Study 4.4 Ton crated machine shipped from the UK to Qatar in 35 days. Tuscor Lloyds was called in at short notice to organise the shipment of a piece of machinery which was required in Doha, Qatar. Tuscor Lloyds had to arrange for a 40ft flat rack container; which is usually an easy task for the experienced project management staff in our Manchester office, but due to the shipment being short notice our reliable supplier of specialist containers didn’t have anything available which would be suitable and ready in time for the proposed shipment date.

Tuscor Lloyds arranged for another 40ft flat rack container to be brought in and the machine (already crated) was swiftly loaded onto the container and transported by road to the Port of Felixstowe from where it would sail. Before it was loaded onto the vessel making the long journey from the UK to Qatar the cargo restraints where checked and the cargo was confirmed as being ready for ocean transportation. The out of gauge crated machine arrived in Doha 35 days after leaving the warehouse where it was originally built. The client was very happy that Tuscor Lloyds managed to organise the shipment in such short notice whilst keeping the quality of service so high throughout the shipment process. source: tuscorlloyds.com

Projects to Morocco These time, Europe does not just deal amongst itself, far from it. Recently Van der Vlist has shown this by providing their services in transporting metal presses from central Europe to Casablanca, Morocco. As they were in parts, the cargo on each of the 12 trucks required was a different size and weight, ranging from smaller parts taken in a tautliner to a semi low loader carrying goods with a 3m width and weighing 32 tonnes. Such long transports to countries like Morocco includes secured parking both at night and over the weekends. At the same time another project ran concurrently, taking similar presses to Portugal from the same destination, these were transshipped from Zeebrugge to Bilbao, before being taken onwards to their destination. Transport to countries such as Morocco is becoming a more common activity, with many similar projects taking place over the last few months. Van der Vlist now regularly ship static and self-drive machinery to and from Tangier port, and where necessary they arrange the local Moroccan transport with their trusted partners. source: vandervlist.com www.indonesialogisticsonline.com | vol. # 11 | XI | SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2013

Power cat sent on her way by TNL GAC Pindar win-hulled boat San Francisco-bound

Auckland - An identical power catamaran to the one used as a tender by Emirates Team New Zealand, currently in San Francisco for the America’s Cup, is the latest boat shipped by yacht logistics specialists TNL GAC Pindar. 14 metre-long power catamaranThe 14 metre-long power catamaran – which has a top speed of 50 knots (92 km per hour) – was entrusted to TNL GAC Pindar for its export from its home port of Auckland in New Zealand to a private owner in San Francisco. The first leg of her voyage to her Californian destination was the 35km road trip on board a trailer from the factory to the port. And because local regulations limit the times when such heavy loads can travel by road, the 4 metre-wide vessel had to be stored before setting off.

Once at the port, she was carefully lifted onto the waiting vessel, placed on four pads to protect the hulls and secured onto the two 40ft flat rack bases on board. Richard Thorpe, Australasian Manager for TNL GAC Pindar, was on hand to make sure the catamaran was handled with care. “It is always satisfying to see a project like this go smoothly,” he says. “A great deal of time and effort is put into ensuring that all the boxes are ticked ahead of such a shipment. And, of course, we always work closely with other experienced parties such as the trucking company, the marine surveyor and the team at the Ports of Auckland to assure our clients that their cargo is in safe hands.” source: gac.com

SOCAR AURORA Fujairah Terminal Announces Commencement of Phase 2 Operations SOCAR AURORA Fujairah Terminal FZC (SAFT), the joint venture company between SOCAR, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic,

AURORA Progress, the Swiss based commodity trading house, and the Government of Fujairah today announced the completion of the second phase of the 815,000 cubic metre oil products terminal in Fujairah. This phase has added 235,000 cubic metres to the tanks already in operation and has been partly funded with $61 million from APICORP and National Bank of Fujairah. Ammar Kutait, CEO of SAFT commented “We are delighted to have been able to complete this second phase four weeks ahead of schedule and well within budget. The construction teams from Fujairah National Construction & Transportation for all the civil works, Belleli Energy for tanks and pipelines, Consilium Middle East for the electrical, instrumentation and fire fighting equipment together with our project manager MUC Oil & Gas and the SAFT team have all played their part in a successful delivery of these 11 tanks. We have adopted the latest technology in the construction including having a revolutionary sealing system in place on the domed and internal floating roofs that will minimise the loss of product.” SOCAR Trading, Vice-President and CFO, Emil Bayramli said: “The terminal has operated very smoothly since it first opened in March 2012. This expansion will provide customers with additional services such as a road loading facility for supply into the local market. As SOCAR Trading we are looking forward to being able to expand the range of products we ourselves store at the terminal. The SOCAR AURORA terminal benefits from a highly flexible pipeline manifold that allows each tank to hold a different product, if required. We have tanks coated so that they can hold aviation jet fuel and ethanol. We set out to make this a thoroughly flexible terminal that can cater to the changing needs of our customers. We are also fortunate to be able to utilise the new, highly efficient oil berth facilities provided by the Port of Fujairah.” “The Port is making further investments as well in additional berths that will shortly allow us to accommodate vessels of up to 200,000 tonnes”, added Ammar Kutait, “and with SAFT having some of the highest pumping rates in Fujairah we expect to be handling these larger ships in the future. “Having completed the first two phases we are focussing our attention now to the construction of the third phase and we are pleased that APICORP and National Bank of Fujairah will be supporting us again in this next phase

Khalifa Port celebrates first year ADPC celebrates the first year anniversary of commercial operations at Abu Dhabi’s state-of-the-art Khalifa Port. In just one year, Khalifa Port has gone from a pristine stretch of reclaimed land four kilometers out to sea, to busy hub port serving 17 shipping lines, offering 18 direct services with direct links to more than 40 ports. Owned by ADPC and operated by Abu Dhabi Terminals (ADT), the container terminal in Khalifa Port is the very first semi-automated port in the Middle East, a state of the art facility with world class technology. Khalifa Port which was delivered on time and under budget, commenced commercial operations on 1 September 2012 and was officially inaugurated by HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, on 12 December 2012. Khalifa Port was built to accommodate all container traffic from Zayed Port and the additional cargo generated by the adjacent Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad). Zayed Port opened in 1972 and has served the Abu Dhabi Emirate for 40 years. However, in 2005, it was realized that with projected growth, Zayed Port would reach full capacity by 2011, and so the Abu Dhabi leadership realized the urgent need for a new modern port with space to grow, to support their long term vision of strong and sustainable economic prosperity.

The work to move all container traffic from Zayed Port to the new Khalifa Port was completed three months ahead of schedule and the transition has enabled Zayed Port to focus on bulk cargo, general cargo, RORO and establishing the port as a world class cruise destination. Today, Khalifa Port is the gateway to Abu Dhabi, handling all of the container traffic for the Emirate. With a 16m water depth, Khalifa Port is capable of receiving and handling the biggest ships sailing the world’s oceans. Khalifa Port is equipped with latest technology and equipment in the industry, including six super post panamax ship to shore cranes which can reach across 22 container stacks on a ship, and 30 automated stacking cranes and 20 straddle carriers. One year on, direct connections link Khalifa Port to more than 40 international destinations and transshipment at the world’s main hubs, such as Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas on the Straits of Malacca; Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the Pearl River Delta; Port Said at Suez Canal; and Algeciras and Tangiers at the Straits of Gibraltar all offer customers a truly global reach. Khalifa Port’s first year of commercial operations includes some notable achievements including an 8% increase in productivity for January to July 2013, when compared with the same period last year and in July the terminal handled a record 81,000 TEU containers – the most ever handled in one month in the emirate. Also in July, the port achieved its highest crane production, with 43.3 crane moves per hour, while loading and unloading the CSL Ride, and in August the terminal achieved a work production rate of 142.4MPH, both achievements placing the terminal in the global top ten for productivity. Khalifa Port is, with the adjacent Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), a key element in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. Together Khalifa Port and Kizad are increasing international trade, developing the industrial landscape and creating employment opportunities. By 2030, both will generate 15% of the emirates non-oil GDP. Khalifa Port and Kizad offer customers an integrated transport structure, ease of doing business and access to global markets linking East and West in international trade.

SEA TRANSPORT

Marking the first anniversary of commercial operations, Mohamed AlShamisi, Acting CEO of ADPC said: “Khalifa Port and Kizad industrial zone are together, the biggest infrastructure project ever undertaken in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. “I would like to thank our leaders and stakeholders for their vision and support. Together we are developing a world class sustainable hub port that is already actively enhancing international trade, providing direct access to global markets, and creating development and employment opportunities for the UAE”.

Martijn Van de Linde, the Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Terminals, the operator of Khalifa Port Container Terminal added: “Khalifa Port lays the foundation for a diverse economy and gives businesses the best possible opportunity to compete in the global market place. “Since the commercial opening on 1st September last year, our customers have enjoyed 35% productivity increases at the quayside, so ships spend less time in port. We have also cut the trucks turnaround time by 64%, so today a truck spends only about 15 minutes at the terminal to pick-up or drop-off a container” Mr. Van de Linde added. “Another benefit of the semi-automated operations at the Khalifa Port Container Terminal is that it is a much safer environment than the traditional operating modes used in other regional ports and I am exceptionally proud to say that since we began the first trials here a year ago, we have achieved 1.9 million man hours with no lost time incidents.” Khalifa Port Phase One has capacity for 2.5 million TEU containers and 12 million tonnes of cargo, however, the terminal is being developed in stages, increasing its capacity as market requirements increase. Ultimately, the port will have capacity for 15 million TEU containers and 35 million tonnes of cargo, making it one of the biggest ports in the world. source : adpc.ae

Port of Gothenburg welcomes world’s largest container ship Early Tuesday morning the world’s largest container ship docked at the Port of Gothenburg. “We have the pleasure of welcoming Maersk Line’s new Triple E class vessel to Gothenburg. This a very strong symbol of the growing trade between Sweden and Asia,” says Magnus Kårestedt, Port of Gothenburg Chief Executive.

Following detailed preparations and test runs on a simulator, the Port of Gothenburg is set to receive the new super post Panamax vessels*. These vessels are so large that no port in North or South America can receive them and there are only a few in Europe and a number in Asia. Fairways that are sufficiently deep and wide are required along with the very largest of cranes. “Thanks to focused, large-scale investment over the years, the Port of Gothenburg is capable of receiving vessels of this size,” says Magnus Kårestedt. New sister ships on the way Maersk Mc-Kinney Möller, which is the name of the new ship, will operate tween Asia and Europe. She left the shipyard in South Korea in June and is currently on her maiden voyage. New sister ships of the same size are due to be built and Maersk Line aims to launch 20 vessels in this class within two years. Other leading shipping lines around the world have also placed orders for similar vessels. Maersk Mc-Kinney Möller is 400 metres in length and has a beam of 59 metres. She has nine levels above deck and ten below. She can carry more than 18,000 containers which, if placed to end to end, would create a line 110 km long. Placed on top of each other, they would result in a 47 km high tower. The load capacity is 16 per cent greater than the largest vessels currently operating anywhere in the world. “It is extremely positive for Swedish industry that the capacity on direct services between Sweden and Asia is increasing. If a company is to invest in Sweden it is vital to have good deep-sea shipping to other continents. This also requires major ports such as Gothenburg that can attract such lines,” says Magnus Kårestedt. The majority of the export containers to Asia contain paper, timber products, steel, industrial components and automotive parts. Imports mainly comprise all forms of consumer goods – electronics, clothes, furniture and food. There is also quite a high proportion of input goods for industry. Super post Panamax is the term applied to ships that are too wide to pass through the Panama Canal. source : portofgothenburg.com

PORT & TERMINALS Large reception for container train from China in the Port of Duisburg

Largest city in the world visits largest inland port in the world / duisport receives Chinese delegation and state television on the arrival ofthe “Yuxinou Train” / Regular connection between Chongqing in Central China and the Port of Duisburg triples since start

Duisburg, September 10, 2013 – The arrival of the regular container train between Chongqing in Central Asia and Duisburg was celebrated today with a large reception in the Port of Duisburg. The occasion was the strong interest of representatives of the Chinese media and state television in the “Yuxinou” rail connection between Asia and Europe, and the Port of Duisburg in particular, as the destination. The train, which needs just 16 days for the journey between the two economic metropolises, started a good two years ago as the first train between China and Germany with one round trip per week. The number of weekly departures has since risen to three – with continued positive growth prospects. “The train is twice as fast as transport on the sea route, but is only half as expensive as air freight. On the Chinese side it is already being described as the new Silk Road,” says Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG, in front of city and media representatives from Chongqing and numerous guests of the City of Duisburg and participants from German and Chinese companies from the port and the region. The connection has expanded duisport’s international network. “As a result the port has moved even more into the focus of global delivery chains, strengthening Duisburg as a leading logistics location and having positive effects on employment prospects,” emphasizes Staake. Daoyi Ding, Deputy General Director of the Information Office from Chongqing also attests to the great potential: “With more than 30 million inhabitants Chongqing is one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the world. The train connection offers incredible opportunities relating to cultural and economic exchanges between China and Europe”. Numerous companies from the electrical, computer and high tech industries, for example, the US manufacturer Hewlett Packard (HP), the Taiwanese supplier of electrical appliances Foxconn and the computer manufacturer Acer also from Taiwan, as well as car manufacturers and suppliers and machine tools manufacturers, have their production locations in the “City of Light” on the Yangtze Kiang. Daoyi Ding: “Arriving in the middle of Germany and the opportunity to distribute

goods further from here makes the container train very attractive to the companies based in our city.” “As a China expert with its town twinning over many years with Wuhan, Duisburg is thus further building on its pole position as a logistics turntable. This currently and also prospectively involves enormous benefits for the economic location, the promotion of foreign trade and also jobs development here,” emphasizes Mayor Sören Link. The 10,300 kilometer long Trans-Eurasian connection through China, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus, Poland and Germany was developed by DB Schenker Rail and Trans Eurasia Logistics, a joint venture between DB AG and the Russian railway RZD, in 2008. It is intended to be an alternative to the heavily used and 2,000 kilometers longer northern route via the Trans-Siberian Railway. The manufacturer HP, which has high quality electronics and computer technology transported from Chongqing to Duisburg using the train, was also included. The advantages are obvious: transferring containers from Chongqing to a Chinese sea port takes about three days alone. A period of time during which the train towards Duisburg has already put half of its route in China behind it. The loading capacity per train is 41 to 50 forty foot containers. The runtime is just 16 days and thus twice as fast as transport on the sea route. Security is also provided: every single container is continually monitored by a GPS system during the whole transport period. “A direct trans-continental train connection to China is an interesting addition to sea transport,” says Erich Staake, convinced of the further success of the Chongqing- Duisburg route. source: duisport.de

FSG launches multi-functional, heavy cargo transporter ROLLDOCK STAR for Dutch ship owner Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) launched the 151.5 metre long ROLLDOCK STAR, the first of two ships for the Dutch concern RollDock BV.The specialised newbuilding is operationally versatile, multi-functional and designed to carry demanding cargo and heavy project loads, mainly in the offshore sector. ROLLDOCK STAR is for delivery at the end of November and is being followed by her sister four months later. FSG 54

Managing Director Peter Sierk said he was delighted at the trust being placed in his shipyard by international shipping companies. “For years we have been the world market leader in the building of RoRo ferries and the challenge now is to open up a brand new sector. We have achieved this by making innovative changes to our operations, design and production just at the right moment with the result that we are now well on the way to establishing a good name for ourselves in specialised shipbuilding as well. our further orders demonstrate this. The main feature of ROLLDOCK STAR is that she has maximum flexibility and offers a range of different loading possibilities. Two heavy-duty cranes move cargo weighing up to 700 tons. In addition ROLLDOCK STAR boasts a stern ramp on which height can be adjusted and also hatch covers, making her adaptable to port piers of differing levels. As a result, individual loads of up to 3,000 tons can be taken on-board or offloaded in classical RoRo mode. The ship can also be submerged more than 12 metres to permit cargo to be floated in or out. She has a deadweight of 8,000 tons. Innovative solutions also incorporated in this design demonstrate the high-value approach which enables the FSG to score points in specialised shipbuilding. One example is the ballast water system in glass-fibre reinforced plastic and complete with built-in automated processes and protocol functions. The new ship design also provides for the accommodation of up to 32 people, so that specialised personnel required for sometimes highly complex and sensitive project loads can also travel along with the crew. source: fsg-ship.de , rolldock.com

The line will be serviced by a fleet of 14 seven-module FLEXITY 2 trams, to be delivered by Bombardier over the next four months. FLEXITY 2 is the latest tram technology from Bombardier, the market leader in the light rail segment. After a two-and-a-half-month sea journey, the first two FLEXITY 2 trams for the Gold Coast arrived in the Port of Brisbane on September 10, 2013 and were transported to the depot in complete units, using

a specially designed 20 axle steerable trailer. The first tram will undergo testing and commissioning on the first section of the corridor, running from the depot along Queen and Nerang streets to Southport. A further six trams, built in Germany, are on their way to Australia, with the remaining trams scheduled to be delivered by early 2014. Passenger services on stage one are expected to commence from mid2014. Based on Bombardier’s highly successful FLEXITY family of light rail vehicles that combines proven technology with continuous improvement and innovation, the Gold Coast tram has been specifically styled by Bombardier’s Industrial Design team in Brisbane to include a wave motif on the cab front. The tram is 43.4 m long and 2.65 m wide with seven modules for higher capacity and better passenger flow. It features the signature blue and gold colours of the Gold Coast and is the first tram in the world designed and built to carry surf boards on specially designed racks. These trams also feature the most powerful air-conditioning system for this class of tram, suitable for Australia’s hot summers. As well as having 100% low floor technology for optimal ride comfort, the FLEXITY 2 trams reflect Bombardier’s commitment to sustainability in public transport. The twin benefits of saving energy and reducing CO2 emissions, for example through the integration of the energy efficient BOMBARDIER MITRAC propulsion system, also help reduce operating costs. More than 4,000 Bombardier trams and light rail vehicles are in revenue service or on order in more than 75cities across Europe, Australia and North America. source: bombardier.com

Alstom delivers first Regiolis train to Lorraine Region

Alstom delivered at the Metz train station, the first Regiolis train to Lorraine Region (north-east of France). Attending the event were Jean-Pierre Masseret, Lorraine Regional Council Chairman, Alain Autruffe, SNCF Lorraine Director, Claude Solar, SNCF Regions and Intercités Director and Jérôme Wallut, Alstom Transport France Managing Director. Lorraine is France’s second region (after Aquitaine in July 2013) to receive its next-generation regional train. The arrival of Regiolis trains in Lorraine has closely followed the inauguration of Alstom’s Regiolis After-Sales Service premises on September 5th 2013 at the SNCF Technicentre in Metz. Alstom teams are on hand to take part in the training of drivers and maintenance teams. To date, 182 Regiolis trains have been ordered for 12 of France’s regions, as part of the contract signed by Alstom and SNCF in 2009. The Lorraine Region ordered 10 Regiolis bimodal trains (diesel or electric (dual voltage 25 kV / 1,500 V)), 72 metres in length and with capacity for up to 219 seated passengers. On top of the standard layout, Regiolis trains in the Lorraine Region will feature extra equipment like a passenger-counting system, a space for bike storage and door-recognition assistance. Regiolis trains have travelled around 250,000 km and are due to complete the certification phase in October 2013. They will be put into service upon receiving their AMECs (Commercial Operation Permits), issued by the EPSF (French Railway Safety Board). Thanks to the hard work performed by SNCF and all the players in France’s rail business channel, about 100 Regiolis trains will have

been delivered by late 2014. Besides the Lorraine Region, trains for Alsace, Aquitaine, Lower Normandy and Picardie will be available as of 2013. Initial commercial service will begin in 2014. Regiolis trains are from the Alstom’s Coradia range. They are modular and can be adapted to the needs of every region: they come in three lengths (56, 72 or 110 metres), with a choice of four comfort levels to suit the travel distance (suburban, regional or intercity), and features a bimodal (diesel/electric) or electric drive. Regiolis trains are ecological and economical on account of their low energy use and reduced maintenance costs. Lastly, they are accessible to everyone thanks to their integral, platform-height low floor. Manufacturing Regiolis trains generates over 4,000 jobs in France at Alstom’s and its suppliers. Six out of the ten Alstom facilities in France are taking part in the project: Reichshoffen (design and assembly), Ornans (engines), Le Creusot (bogies), Tarbes (drive chains), Villeurbanne (on-board computers) and Saint-Ouen (design). source: alstom.com

On course towards accident-free driving Volkswagen has set the goal of exploiting all potentials that contribute towards significantly reducing traffic fatalities as well as the sheer number of accidents. All of these activities are bundled under the company’s “Vision Zero” concept. In the development of innovative driver assistance systems, Volkswagen is pursuing this vision as systematically as it is the concept of piloted parking and

driving. Focal points of research and development at Volkswagen towards this goal are: improved perception of the vehicle surroundings and events in traffic, assisting the driver in challenging t raffic situations, improving the safety of vehicle occupants and others in traffic and avoiding accidents and serious injuries. Along with assistance systems for pedestrian detection – which initiate emergency braking if the driver does not react in time – Volkswagen is also introducing parking assistants that enable automatic parking and exiting from narrow parking spaces via smartphone. Moreover, Volkswagen is also offering a look at systems that can navigate fully automatically through road construction zones and systems that assume steering control in a medical emergency and safely brake the vehicle to a stop. Current innovations by Volkswagen Development engineers working in the area of driver assistance and safety systems are other steps on the path towards accident-free mobility. Caterpillars around the world Caterpillars around the world Mobile construction equipment is a reasonably regular transport for Van der Vlist, however recently they were asked to move a mobile vehicle that isn’t a regular sight, particularly over-ground! Having been shipped all the way from Melbourne, Australia, Van der Vlist collected 2 Caterpillar R2900 machines in Antwerp to take to Terneuzen where they were shipped across to Pitea in Sweden. These machines are used underground, and are designed to be compact enough for working in the tight spaces for underground mining and tunnelling. The machines measured 11.75m in length, 3.32m in width, as they are built for work underground they are only 3m high, but weigh in at 57,000KG. The rare Caterpillar vehicles were met in Antwerp by 3 axle Van der Vlist trucks, to be loaded on their 5 axle semi low trailers, which took them comfortably from port to port, departing for their destination in Sweden. Where after their journey half way around the world, they will get to work helping to look for things such as silver, lead and zinc. source: vandervlist.com

New Mercedes-Benz SLT hauls heaviest loads up to 250 t

Wörth/Molsheim – With the sales launch of its new Mercedes-Benz SLT heavy-duty tractor unit for the European markets, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is completing the introduction of its new truck model series featuring Euro VI in-line six-cylinder engines. The new family of Mercedes-Benz trucks for heavy-duty transport is available for the first time as the variants Actros-SLT with air suspension and Arocs-SLT with steel suspension, while the Arocs is also alternatively available with all-wheel drive. The SLT takes the best enes and components from the various model series of the new truck generation and fuses them together to create the jewel-in-the-crown of truck engineering. The customer profits from the huge range of possible heavyduty transport vehicle variants - there are seven different wheel arrangements alone. Responsible for the development and production of the SLT with immediate effect is Custom Tailored Trucks (CTT), located in the Alsatian town of Molsheim and managed by the Wörth truck plant. The Euro III and Euro 70

V versions of the Actros-SLT for non-European and overseas markets continues to be manufactured by CTT partner Titan. The Mercedes-Benz SLT is currently the only heavyduty transport vehicle on the market which boasts Euro VI certification, a turbo retarder clutch as standard, and the Mercedes PowerShift 3 transmission with a special “Heavy” transmission mode.

ROAD TRANSPORT the new engine generation has been thoroughly developed for low fuel consumption. The special features of the new Mercedes-Benz OM 473 include a technical speciality, the turbo-compound system. The term stands for a second turbine downstream of the exhaust gas turbocharger. The automated Mercedes PowerShift 3 transmission features a “Heavy transmission mode and is designed for high torque to handle loads of up 250 t. The SLT is the only vehicle in the field of competitors that has a 16-speed transmission and consequently the finest gear ratio spread in the heavy-duty transport sector. The turbo retarder clutch is another unique selling point of the new SLT. It functions as a wear-free starting-off aid, while the retarder section functions as a brake, and yet is lighter, more efficient and more compact than a torque converter clutch. This means the SLT tractor unit has temporally unlimited manoeuvrability and unrestricted low-speed driving and crawling capability, meaning that the SLT boasts the greatest possible flexibility in operation. The large quantities of heat developed are dissipated by the high-performance cooling system behind the cab, both in the three-axle and four-axle variants, of course. The cooling system is concealed by elegantly designed flaps on the sides that give the Actros or Arocs cab a distinctive and dynamic appearance. Drivers of heavy-duty transport vehicles spend much of their working time behind the wheel driving long distances - and taking many forced breaks if the permit so requires. At other times they must feel their way through tight town centres with their overheavy, overlong tractor-semitrailer combinations, and finally, on the last stretch to their destination, they become construction vehicle drivers who must deliver a generator set or wind turbine over poor field roads. The cab for the heavy-duty transport vehicle must be selected to meet all these requirements. The Actros-SLT with air suspension is available with GigaSpace or BigSpace cab; the Arocs-SLT with steel suspension, with BigSpace (2.5 m) or StreamSpace (2.3 m) cab. AIR TRANSPORT Improving Africa’s infrastruture is key to future air cargo growth

Air cargo charter is an effective way of moving freight that is of high-value, outsize or of a time-sensitive nature – making it an integral part of the global logistics network to support manufacturing, trade and investment. Nowhere in the world is the potential for aviation greater than on the African continent – home to over a billion people spread across 20 per cent of the world’s land mass. Aviation has aided linking the continent to the world and plays a powerful role in integrating the 54 national economies of Africa. Aviation allows even the most remote destinations to be a part of the global economy. However, there are challenges to overcome before the potential of Africa can be fully realised. In areas such as Central Africa, for example, airport and road infrastructure has to improve before we can expect further growth in air cargo movements.

Earlier this year, Chapman Freeborn launched new scheduled air cargo services to key mining locations in Africa. A regular freighter service on a DC8-27F now operates from Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport, non-stop to Lubumbashi International Airport in the south-eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and to N’Djili International Airport located in the DRC’s capital city of Kinshasa, which has proven very successful.

The company also operates a Fokker F27 aircraft which is based at the Entebbe International Airport, Uganda, and available for all regional cargo charter requirements. Iain Clark, Chapman Freeborn’s regional director for Africa, says: “Introducing new air cargo services is an effective way to unlock the potential of Africa for international trade and investment. “Uganda is just one example of a key location for flying Governments need to be committed to solve these issues spares, exploration equipment and core samples – mostly – the African economies have shown solid growth, with the using the Fokker F27, as well as AN-26’s, DC9, 747 and L100fastest progress coming from resource-rich countries, but 30 cargo aircraft.” with inadequate infrastructure it will impede further develop- However, perhaps more so than other parts of the world, ment in Africa. Boeing Delivers First 767 Freighter to FedEx Express EVERETT, Wash. – Boeing [NYSE: BA] and FedEx Express, an operating company of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX), celebrated today the delivery of the Memphis, Tenn.-based express shipping company’s first 767-300 freighter. The delivery supports the FedEx strategy to modernize its fleet with more efficient freighters. “Today’s delivery of our first 767 freighter is another step forward in our fleet modernization strategy,” said James R. Parker, executive vice president of Air Operations for FedEx Express. “The 767 is approximately 30 percent more fuel efficient and has unit operating costs that are more than 20 percent lower than the aircraft they will replace. The net effect is an aircraft that is more affordable to operate and has lower carbon emissions because of better fuel efficiency.” The 767 freighter is an ideal upgrade for the fleet serving the FedEx Express domestic network, providing improved fuel, maintenance and cost savings over the MD10 freighters it will replace. FedEx Express gains additional efficiency through the ability to share parts, tooling and flight simulators between the 767 and the more than 70 757 freighters already in its fleet. “We are excited to see the 767 freighter join the FedEx fleet,” said Brad McMullen, vice president of North America Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 767 freighter, with its tremendous efficiency among medium wide-body cargo airplanes, will complement FedEx’s fleet and support fast, reliable deliveries to customers around the world.” The 767 freighter is based on the popular 767-300ER (extended range) passenger airplane. Able to carry approximately 58 tons (52.7 tonnes) of revenue cargo with intercontinental range, the 767 freighter is ideal for developing new long-haul, regional or feeder markets. AIR TRANSPORT SITA and Thales stream inflight entertainment on demand to passengers’ own devices Thales and SITA today reported on the success of pairing Thales’ GateSync™ with SITA’s e-Aircraft Services to enable in-flight entertainment on demand to passengers’ smartphones, tablets and other devices. Currently on trial with LAN Airlines, at Santiago Airport, it provides passengers with on-demand rich content straight to their own devices. This includes music, movies, news, TV series, PC games, interactive shopping, destination and flight information, all streamed within the cabin. SITA provides connectivity for aircraft on the ground via Wi-Max, Wi-Fi, or cellular service and, through its subsidiary OnAir, in-flight connectivity through satellite-based broadband services. By using SITA’s network to deliver its in-flight entertainment (IFE), Thales avoids shipping hard drives and the need for manpower to upload content, while allowing frequent updates. SITA’s delivery of information is fast, secure and cost-effective, and it can handle other airline data, such as non-safety-critical operational aircraft communications, as well as the IFE content. Stuart Dunleavy, Vice President of Media & Connectivity of Thales’s In Flight Entertainment Systems business, said: “Thales is committed to delivering high performance digital media distribution. The combination of Thales expertise in the development of in-flight entertainment and passenger connectivity solutions, with SITA’s recognized specialization in air transport communications and IT solutions is central to the success of this initiative. Each party is bringing its strengths to this project.” Sebastien Fabre, Vice President, Integrated Networks, SITA, said: “SITA and Thales are unlocking the maximum benefits achievable from e-connected aircraft. This

technology is not just for IFE, but can be for all data. In effect, we are making the aircraft an active node in the airline’s enterprise network, allowing data control by all stakeholders within the airline. Passengers get on-demand IFE, while time-sensitive data such as passenger manifests, daily news, meal inventories, surveys, crew logs and system performance data can also be securely transmitted to the airline’s operational systems. “SITA is currently experiencing data volume growth on new generation aircraft (A380 and B787) approaching 100% compared to older generation aircraft. This demonstrates that the development of aircraft-centric IP service management is essential to meet the needs of airlines.” This innovative trial from Thales and SITA rapidly accelerates the delivery of high speed Gatesync™ wireless ground connectivity for airlines, putting in place the building blocks for seamless e-enabled aircraft operations. With the evolution of aeronautical wireless communications and mobile devices, and the growth of new generation aircraft, such as the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787, the Thales/SITA project demonstrates not only sophisticated on-demand IFE services for passengers, but new ways of operating aircraft. Airlines can reduce costs and accelerate turnaround time because time-sensitive data can be transmitted wirelessly to, and from, an entire airline fleet. This automates the labor-intensive and time-consuming processes of retrieving and loading large volumes of aircraft systems’ data. The ground-based infrastructure, which SITA has installed and manages, uses SITA’s existing private backbone network for the secure deployment and management of data among airports, airlines and third parties to the e-enabled aircraft ecosystem around the world. It is fully integrated into SITA’s Command Centers, which provide round-the-clock monitoring and support services. Onboard the aircraft, Thales provides GateSync components and integrates the system with onboard servers and avionics equipment. source: sita.aero

Carrier Will Take Delivery Of Its First A380 In Spring 2014 TOULOUSE, France – The much anticipated delivery of Qatar Airways’ first A380 is one step closer to joining the airline’s fleet, as the aircraft was ferried from Toulouse to Hamburg during a test flight last week. The Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, is one of thirteen on order by Qatar Airways. The airline is set to take delivery of the aircraft in spring 2014. The aircraft will be fitted in a tri-class configuration with seats in First Class, Business Class and Economy Class. The first route will be to a European destination, with the city to be confirmed at a later date. The airline’s original order of 8 A380 aircraft was made at the Dubai Air Show in January 2004, and then nearly doubled with an order for an additional 5 aircraft at the Dubai Airshow in 2010. Qatar Airways’ future home, the Hamad International Airport, scheduled to open in the beginning of 2014, has been specially designed to cater to the A380, with 6 contact gates designed with specifications required for the super jumbo. In addition, the maintenance hangar at HIA – which will be the largest in the world – is able to accommodate two of A380s simultaneously. Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker said that the airline is pleased to see the progress being made on their first A380. “It is thrilling to see the A380 painted in Qatar Airways 78

colours on display during its test flight from Toulouse to Hamburg. We have been awaiting the delivery of our first A380, and are delighted to soon operate passenger services with this fantastic aeroplane. “Our mission is to provide our passengers the best – whether it is comfort, cuisine, the most expansive route network, or the best connectivity. By introducing the A380 to our ever expanding young and modern fleet, we are keeping to our commitment of ensuring that our passengers have the best possible experience when travelling with Qatar Airways,” he added. The airline has seen rapid growth in just 16 years of operations, currently flying a modern fleet of 129 aircraft to 130 key business and leisure

destinations worldwide. Qatar Airways has so far launched eight destinations this year – Gassim (Saudi Arabia), Najaf (Iraq), Phnom Penh (Cambodia), Chicago (USA), Salalah (Oman), Basra (Iraq), Sulaymaniyah (Iraq) and Chengdu, (China). Over the next few weeks and months, the network will expand with the addition of further destinations – Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (September 18), Ta’if, Saudi Arabia (October 2), Clark International Airport, Philippines (October 27), and Philadelphia, USA (April 2, 2014). source: qatarairways.com

The Trent XWB and Airbus A350 make a powerful combination, enabling us to continue to deliver the highest levels of customer service.” Eric Schulz, Rolls-Royce, President - Civil Large Engines, said: “This is a significant order for the Trent XWB from a valued customer that has continued to use new Trent technology to develop its fleet. We look forward to continuing our close relationship with Lufthansa.” The announcement continues a close relationship between Rolls-Royce and Lufthansa. Lufthansa has 60 Trent-powered Airbus A380s, A330s and A340s either in service or on order. New “Triple Seven” bound for North America Lufthansa Cargo launches a new era of aviation with the Boeing 777F More modern, less noisy, more efficient: As of November 2013, Lufthansa Cargo will be flying around the world with brand new Boeing 777 freighters. The first three destinations scheduled for the so-called “Triple Seven” evoke the pioneering spirit Lufthansa displayed when developing civilian air traffic across the Atlantic. Atlanta, Chicago, New York: Lufthansa Cargo’s new Boeing 777F will initially be bound - just like 41 years ago - for North America. Flashback: On 19 April 1972 Lufthansa was the first airline world-wide to use the freighter version of the “jumbo” Boeing 747 - which was at the time also the largest civilian aircraft to go into serial production - for transporting cargo between Europe and the USA. With 73 tons of cargo and 1.8 tons of mail on board, the four-engine Boeing 747-200F took off on its first scheduled flight from Frankfurt to New York. Four decades later, the new member of Lufthansa Cargo’s fleet only needs two engines to con-

nect Europe with the USA or Asia. The Boeing 777F is able to remain in the air for ten and a half hours with a payload of 103 tons. During that time it can fly over 9,000 kilometres non-stop. In addition, the aircraft meets the strictest noise protection standards in international civil aviation. This gives it maximum access to airports with strict noise regulations, bringing significant relief to people who live near airports. “Thanks to its outstanding technical performance and reliability, the freighter is entering new dimensions. It also marks a milestone on our ambitious path to lowering specific emissions by 25 per cent until 2020”, says Dr. Karl-Rudolf Rupprecht, Board Member Operations Lufthansa Cargo AG. Modernising the fleet is just one of six projects of the Lufthansa Cargo 2020 future programme, by means of which Germany’s largest freight airline wants to maintain and strengthen its position as the industry leader of the air cargo sector. Lufthansa Cargo has invested in five new Triple Seven aircraft. The list price of the Boeing 777F is 270 million US dollars. source: lufthansa-cargo.com

Garuda Indonesia starts taking delivery of new A330-300 fleet Garuda Indonesia, the national carrier of Indonesia, has taken the delivery of the first of its new fleet of 18 A330-300s at a special ceremony in Toulouse. The new aircraft will form a major element in the airline’s fleet modernisation programme and are powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines. The airline’s new A330-300s feature a two class premium layout, with 36 seats that convert to full flat beds in Business Class and an extra spacious Economy cabin with an average seat pitch of 33-34 inches. Garuda Indonesia will operate the aircraft from its hubs in Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali) to destinations across Asia, the Middle East and the Pacific. 82

The aircraft will join an existing Airbus fleet at the airline that currently includes 10 recently acquired A330-200s, used primarily on long range routes, and six early version A330-300s flying on domestic and shorter regional services. “The A330 has been a key element in the success of Garuda Indonesia,” said Emirsyah Satar, President & CEO, Garuda Indonesia. “It remains one of the most efficient aircraft types on the market today and is a firm favourite with our passengers, offering the highest levels of in-flight comfort.” Garuda Indonesia currently operates 106 aircraft and with its quantum leap programme, will be operating 194 by 2015.

TECHNOLOGY Toyota Launches ‘SPOTME’ Warning System for a Safer Workplace Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) has launched a new system to help improve forklift safety in busy warehouses. The Toyota Material Handling ‘SpotMe’ safety system was designed to guard against collisions at ‘blind’ intersections within a warehouse. It can guard against both forklift-to-forklift and forkliftpedestrian collisions. The Toyota SpotMe system will be unveiled in Australia at the Safety Show Sydney, to be held at the Sydney Showground on 3 to 5 September. It will be available nationally from TMHA branches, or it can be installed by TMHA service technicians or a customer’s maintenance staff. SpotMe’s infra-red (IR) direction-sensitive sensors detect the movement of approaching forklifts and pedestrians at the crossroads. TMHA national sales and product manager for BT and Raymond product, Dean Watson, said if a collision danger is spotted, a SpotMe warning unit is activated to help the forklift operator(s) and/or operator and pedestrian to avoid an accident. “Warehouses are crowded, fast-moving environments requiring extra attention from forklift operators and pedestrians to maintain high warehouse safety levels,” he said. “In areas with restricted visibility, Toyota’s SpotMe alerts forklift operators and pedestrians to the potential dangers of collisions, protecting the workers, the forklifts and the goods.” Mr Watson said alternating flashing lights (LEDs) used by SpotMe are far more efficient in preventing accidents than flashing beacons or 86

other types of warning lights. “SpotMe also provides benefits in reduced wear and tear on the forklifts, reduced energy consumption and less chance of damage to goods,” he said. “With the SpotMe system installed there are fewer panic braking stops - and therefore improved operator behaviour. “SpotMe also helps reduce the risk of dropping goods and keeps your forklift in better shape, while also saving energy.” Mr Watson said Toyota’s SpotMe can be used at crossings, blind corners, doors and exits. “The warning unit can be connected to a standalone battery or plugged into the mains, and the sensor battery lasts up to three years. “The sensor and warning devices are simply fixed to the walls; no set-up is required on the mobile fleet,” he said. source : toyotamaterialhandling.com.au

Red Eye Flight to Freedom Success Animal Place spearheads the rescue of 3,000 hens from a caged “egg-laying” hen farm, Flies 1,150 out to east coast sanctuaries for the first ever flight of adult birds Check out our FAQ regarding this flight. 1,150 hens are flying in style from Animal Place sanctuary in California to New York for permanent placement. This is the first time in history a private plane has been chartered to fly hens from coast to coast. The hens are part of a group of 3,000 Animal Place saved from gassing at a California egg farm. A private donor stepped up to foot the bill allowing Animal Place to fly the hens in a private jet. “This is the first time adult birds have ever been flown across the country,” says Kim Sturla, Executive Director. “A generous donor offered to fly the hens across the country and we jumped at the opportunity.” The 2-yr-old white leghorns are from a battery cage egg farm where they lived in cages so small they couldn’t stretch their wings. When they were 8-days-old, the hens had a portion of their beaks cut off without pain relief to prevent fighting in cages. The hens will be carefully loaded at Animal Place’s two facilities in Grass Valley and Vacaville, then trucked to the Hayward Executive Airport for a 6:45 pm departure. They will be arriving in New York around 7 am on the 5th. Nine sanctuaries and shelters will be taking in the 1,150 hens, adopting them out or keeping them permanently at their refuges. The remaining 1,850 are available for adoption through Animal Place in California. source: animalplace.org

EVENTS

Singapore is set to play host to the second PowerLogistics Asia exhibition and conference.

The event, which will take place on October 30 and 31, 2013 in the Lion City’s Marina Bay Sands resort will bring together the heavy transport and lifting industry from across the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region delivering a platform for discussions , networking and new business. The event’s organizers promise that companies within the engineering procurement and construction sector, serving the oil and gas, energy and mining industries will be able to meet and talk with project logistics service providers to discuss the safe and efficient movement of heavy, over-dimensional and modular equipment. Event general manager Felix Schrick said: “We chose Singapore as it is the major regional logistics hub for the oil and gas, heavy engineering, petrochemical, maritime and offshore supply industries. It also serves as an important project cargo transshipment center for Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East, Far East and Australia. “Among the participants, we already have many of the sector’s big brands participating, on both sides of the supply chain, including Chevron, Technip, Jacobs Engineering, Mammoet, Jumbo Shipping, SAL Heavy Lift, Panalpina and JAS Forwarding.” Schrick explained that the main purpose of the exhibition is to help generate partnerships between the participants and the heavy transport service providers that will be exhibiting. “Picking the right partner can be tricky when it comes to working in countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar,” said Schrick, adding that Power Logistics Asia 2013 will also be a great platform for European, African and American project forwarders to meet partners based in ASEAN countries.

Myanmar Logistics

Recently Myanmar has attracted much attention from the oil, gas and mining industries and there is a huge demand for project logistics services and equipment providers in this region. Consequently Myanmar’s logistics needs will be a subject for discussion at the PowerLogistics Asia 2013 Conference. Procurement and supply chain professionals within the oil and gas, heavy engineering, power and mining industries have been invited to attend PowerLogistics Asia 2013; and the organizers make it clear that this is not an event for general freight forwarders. Schrick said that it will focus on the heavy lift and transport of project cargoes. The event will also include a full program of seminars featuring speakers from the industrial side; plus heavy lift and transport experts who will be highlighting industry specific.
