LOGISTICS APL makes organizational realignment to further drive strategy
Geodis signed a three-year agreement to post all of their offers on the Teleroute freight exchange
Through
its Geodis BM and Geodis Calberson subsidiaries, the global provider of multimodal transport Geodis agreed to publish all of its freight postings on the Teleroute freight exchange for the next 3 years. Geodis will also be supported during a test period with the new solutions of Wolters Kluwer Transport Services (WKTS), provider of “on demand” transport management software and services (TMSS). This agreement allows Geodis to rely on Teleroute for all its freight postings via an interface with their own transport management system (TMS) and thus avoiding double entry for its users. The contract also provides other opportunities for Geodis, including the use of other transport management solutions provided by Wolters Kluwer Transport Services (WKTS). Indeed, Geodis will test different modules of Transwide, another entity of WKTS, including twSlot, an online solution for appointment planning. “The fact that a group like Geodis chooses us reinforces our position and confirms the added value that Teleroute delivers to its customers”, said Fabrice Maquignon, CEO of Wolters Kluwer Transport Services.

Blue Water Power plant logistics in Australia Blue Water Singapore has completed the
overall logistics for the Leichhardt Power Station project at Mount Isa, Australia. The plant is being built by Leighton Contractors and is a part of the larger Diamantina Power Station Project which is also currently under construction. “The logistics required close co-operation between multiple areas of the three major parties, Leighton Contractors, Rolls-Royce and Blue Water Singapore. This co-operation enabled all major packages to be delivered and placed immediately on their foundations, which was of crucial importance on a small and busy site and a tight construction schedule” says Rob Sherwood, Senior Project Manager from Leighton Contractors. Egypt plans to construct an logistics hub
Egypt’s plans to construct an international industrial and logistics hub close to the Suez Canal on 76,000 square
kilometers of land, to boost business development, has taken a major step forwards. It is to choose the winning bid after putting the project out to tender. The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has selected 14 Egyptian and international joint venture consortia, out of 33 groups who responded to the initial tender, to submit master plans for the Suez Canal Regional Development Project (SCRDP). The winning consortia would have six months to draw up its project in detail before being presented to Egypt’s cabinet. If all goes to plan, infrastructure work on the project would commence in early 2015. The SCA’s president, Mohab Mameesh, has underlined that the SCRDP will increase the canal’s revenues considerably which total around USD 5 billion annually. According to figures from the SCA, in the first half of previous year the number of container ships transiting the canal declined by 5.4% compared to the same period in 2012 to 3,007 ships. Hamburg logistics provider HOYER has revised its ADR trainings. Now, company employees can brush up on their knowledge about dangerous goods through several online training units. There is even a green side effect: by using the program HOYER saves CO2 because trips to external training locations are rendered unnecessary. Learning just what is important, just when it is needed. That is the basic idea behind the e-learning platform, which Hamburg logistics company HOYER introduced this year. Thanks to an IT solution and to the Internet, courses take place at employees’ workspaces where staff are free to pick the best suitable times for the trainings. The e-learning program for chemical logistics consists of six learning units and conveys the most important regulations of dangerous goods law. No matter whether they work in the commercial or industrial areas: all of HOYER’s employees profit from the Web trainings and by constantly keeping their expertise up to date. For the company’s drivers, especially, continuously updating their

knowledge is of the highest priority and has always been achieved through attending in-class courses. Shortly, however, drivers too will be able to use the online courses. HOYER is currently also implementing the program in English so that in a few weeks’ time all HOYER employees worldwide have access to it which will allow the trainings to reinforce the uniform quality standards of the company. Additional e-learning courses about topics like equipment, handling of special products and quality standards are in the works. Trainings at the workplace are increasingly replacing face-to-face-instructions. Tuscor Lloyds has just completed the shipment of 45 tons of cargo transported from France to South Korea Tuscor Lloyds is happy working once again with the power generation industry, moving 45 tons of condenser parts from Rivesaltes, France to Busan, Korea.
The cargo, with a total weight of 45 tons, was picked up in Rivesaltes, in the south of France and loaded onto 2 x 40ft flat racks. The cargo was then transported 155+ miles by road to the Port of Barcelona, Spain.

About CILT INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION Each year the members of the CILT International family meet to share ideas, learn from each other and conduct the business of the Institute. Each year the CILT Council meeting has got bigger and bigger with more and more delegates from the growing number of Councils around the world. In May 2009 over 80 delegates from more than 20 countries met in Mauritius. In May 2010 the delegates attendance were much larger meeting in Malta. In 2011 we were meeting in Sydney, 2012 in Birmingham, the UK and in 2013 we had this convention in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The meeting is now called the Convention because our Institute has become too large for an annual Council Meeting to conduct all of the business of the Institute, (Day to Day operations are managed by the Secretary General and the Secretariat. The International Management Board meets on a regular basis and is assisted by the Audit Committee, Vice Presidents and Trustees.) At the meeting in Mauritius we introduced the CILT Showcase where Councils can share their successful initiatives. We also had an International Meeting of the Young Professionals and the first meeting of the Secretariat. CILT International recognizes the importance of such programme and therefore provide such platform for everyone to come together under one common roof to meet each other common objectives and goals which is for the betterment of the industry. CILT International Convention 2014 Melaka will offer some extended activities on top of official programs such as special outdoor program and dedicated Conference for Women In Logistics and Transport (WILAT) as well as enhanced networking session and one full day program for Young Professional (YPs). The normal spouses program will be upgraded to 3- days family program to cater spouses and accompanying children of delegates that will explore historic Melaka with full activities. The convention will offer exhibitions by industry players , one day international conference on logistics and transport issues as well as one day international academic research papers presentations by scholars and masters and doctorate candidates.

Collaboration to lift cruise tourism ,Region Gotland and Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) Gotland’s commerce. Through a collaboration between Region Gotland and Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP), Gotland is to become a strategic goal for the growing cruise tourism traffic in the Baltic. A new quay for cruise ships is an important necessity. Region Gotland and Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) have today signed an Memorandum Of Understanding with the intention of developing Visby as a cruise destination.
“Despite the fact that all cruise ships that move in a north-south direction in the Baltic pass by Gotland, the island can no longer keep up with cruise tourism development. The lack of a quay is the biggest problem. We are consequently very happy to commence collaboration with CMP, who we can develop activities with”, says Åke Svensson, Chairman of the Regional Board. “We see great potential in Gotland as a cruise destination and as another stop-off point in our cruise programme”, says Johan Röstin, CMP’s CEO. The MOU means the parties shall: Produce a common business concept to strengthen the parties’ market positions in the cruise industry. Work out a long-term function and marketing plan and financial model for a new cruise quay. The necessary service structure to be developed with

In parallel with the negotiations Region Gotland is mustering strength to be able to start construction as soon as possible. A new quay can be ready for use by 2018. Commerce also is faced with preparing for receiving significantly more visitors, and over a longer season than the traditional summer vacation period. This work kicks off with a breakfast meeting organised by Region Gotland on 14th February. During the period 2000 to 2012 the number of cruise passengers in the Baltic rose from 1.1 million to 4.2 million. A cruise quay in Visby is estimated to increase the number of calls to around 150 cruise ships annually, with an average passenger load of around 1 700 passengers per vessel, generating income to commerce of around SEK 90-130 million SEK per year. As the global economy slowly returned to growth, the Port of Singapore maintained its global lead in bunker sales, and achieved good growth in annual vessel arrival tonnage, container and cargo throughput in 2013. The Singapore Registry of Ships also continued to grow in size and ranks among the top 10 worldwide.
Container and Cargo Throughput Container throughput hit 32.6 million TEUs in 2013, a 2.9 per cent increase over the 31.6 million TEUs in 2012. Total cargo tonnage handled last year rose 3.6 per cent over 2012 to reach 557.5 million tonnes.
Singapore is also now home to about 130 shipping groups. The maritime cluster employs more than 170,000 people and contributes some seven per cent to Singapore’s Gross Domestic Product.
Bunker Sales The total volume of bunkers sold in the Port of Singapore in 2013 was 42.5 million tonnes, compared to 42.7 million tonnes in 2012. Singapore remained the world’s top bunkering port in 2013.
These were reflected in the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s advance estimates of port indicators announced today by Minister for Transport, Mr Lui Tuck Yew, at the Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year cocktail reception.
The Singapore Registry of Ships The Singapore Registry of Ships did well last year. The total tonnage of ships under our register grew by 13.2 per cent or 8.6 million GT in 2013. As of end December 2013, the total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag was 73.6 million GT, putting Singapore among the top 10 ship registries in the world.
Vessel Arrival Tonnage Annual vessel arrival tonnage reached 2.33 billion gross tons (GT) in 2013, an increase of 3.2 per cent from the 2.25 billion GT achieved in 2012. Container ships and tankers were the top contributors, each accounting for around 30 per cent of total vessel arrival tonnage.

The duisport Group expands container terminal capacities to 5 million TEU by 2015 duisport expands its handling capacities by 1 million TEU Capacity expansion to 5 million TEU by 2015 / Additional gantry cranes on logport I and logport III
Duisburg, February 3, 2014 – The duisport Group is expanding its terminal capacities in the container terminals in logport I and logport III on the left bank of the Rhine. A build-up in rail infrastructure is also associated with the expansion from six gantry cranes currently to a total of ten. In addition, the handling and depot area is being expanded by 13 hectares. “Through the targeted build-up and new construction of terminal capacities we are creating the conditions for further growth. We will have capacities to handle 5 million standard containers as early as January 2015,” explains Erich Staake, Chief Executive Officer of Duisburger Hafen AG. The first capacity expansion on logport I will already be completed at the end of February 2014. Then the new trimodal portal crane with a span of around 140m will start operations on the D3T terminal in logport I. This is the second crane of this size on D3T and is one of the largestb portal cranes in an inland port. A third rail crane for the neighboring and also trimodal container terminal DIT is following in autumn 2014.

A build-up of the rail infrastructure and an expansion of the handling and depot area by 10 hectares are also associated with the purchase of additional efficient cranes. “Around 50,000m2 that was previously used for car handling is being rededicated for this purpose. The necessary track infrastructure has already been produced,” explains Staake. Furthermore, two new rail cranes are being set up at the bimodal terminal logport III in Duisburg-Hohenbudberg. The first should enter service in April and the second in autumn 2014. The current terminal area is also being expanded by 3 hectares for this. “With seven handling platforms, two shunting tracks and two gantry cranes, the handling capacity of logport III will be increased to around 600,000 TEU in the final stage. Thus we can further build on our position as the largest container handling location in Central Europe,” says Staake. Source: duisport.com

Television, print and online media, as well as international conferences and events, will all be used to build awareness about Sohar and its unique offering.”

,A new container terminal at Sohar port would be fully operational by April-May this year, said Andre Toet, CEO of Sohar Industrial Port Company. Speaking at a ceremony to unveil a new brand identity for Port Sohar and Sohar Free Zone, Andre said, “The terminal to be set up by Oman International Container Terminal (OCIT) with an investment of over $130 million will be capable of handling container vessels up to 11,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). The project will boost the capacity of the terminal from the current 800,000 TEUs to 1.5 million TEUs.” The OICT is a joint venture between Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), the government of Oman, Steinweg of Netherlands and a number of Omani investors. Toet said, “We are very well prepared to handle international players and the volumes from Muscat after it shifts its operations in Sohar. We already have international players in the port and that is our strength. Among these are Hutchinson from Hong Kong, Vale from Brazil, Jindal from India, Steinweg from Holland, Oiltanking/Odfjell from Germany/Norway. Thus, there is international recognition for the port already. There are a good amount of foreign investments in the Free Zone.” He further added, “With the given current capacity in the port, we can handle the volumes from Muscat to Sohar quite easily. The new container terminal at the OICT will have1.5 million TEU capacity. The general cargo terminal will be further expanded with berth and lay down area. It is good to know that with the current capacity, we could handle Muscat volumes.”
Jamal T. Aziz, the chief executive officer of Sohar Freezone, said, “Sohar Port became a port in 2004, and in 2009, it became a port plus a free zone. By 2013, it was a port with multiple terminals, a container terminal, a bulk terminal, a general cargo terminal plus an industrial hub and a growing free zone. Today, we have 85 per cent of our land in the port area occupied and about 80 per cent of the free zone is also occupied.” He further added, “This is the added value for Sohar. It is only logical then to market it as an international brand because it has a reputation for fast growth and the port and free zone are customer and business friendly.” Jamal T. Aziz said, “In the Free zone, we have a lot of investments from India. We expect these to grow even further. A lot of local business groups see the potential for Sohar as the hub for regional distribution centre, especially in the automotive segment as well as third party logistics.” The economic prosperity generated by the Sohar Port and the Freezone is also having a positive spillover effect for the region, a point highlighted by Sultan bin Salim Al Habsi, secretary-general of the Supreme Council for Planning and also the chairman of the Board. He said, “Of course, the economic success of the Sohar Port and the Free Zone is critical and the figures speak for themselves, but our success should also be judged on the basis of growing prosperity of the local communities. Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding starts steel cutting fo the Ministry of Defence of Indonesia and Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding (DSNS) signed the contract for the first SIGMA 10514 PKR Frigate.
In accordance with the agreed planning for the construction of this frigate, the Steel Cutting Ceremony took place simultaneously on 15 January 2014 at PT PAL (Persero) Shipyard in Surabaya (Indonesia) and DSNS in Vlissingen (the Netherlands). DSNS will build two modules and subsequently ship them to the yard in Surabaya. The simultaneous construction and testing of the modules at two different locations signifies the unique modular building strategy of Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding; a method unparalleled in the naval shipbuilding industry. All modules will be assembled at the PT PAL(Persero) Shipyard under main contractorship of DSNS followed by Harbour Acceptance Tests and Sea Acceptance Trials.

Second Frigate The engineering process for the second SIGMA 10514 PKR frigate, for which the contract was signed December 2013, proceeds as scheduled and construction is foreseen to start in approximately 6 months. Scope The acquisition of the SIGMA 10514 PKR Frigate is part of the further modernization and expansion of the Indonesian Navy, TNI-AL. The main missions and tasks of the SIGMA PKR 10514 will be in the domains of naval warfare as well as Maritime Security missions and tasks. Filipina Kesepakatan antara PT PAL INDONESIA (Persero) dengan kementerian pertahanan (Department of National Defence) Filipina telah disepakati dalam pembuatan 2 unit Strategic Sealift Vessel (SSV). Penunjukkan ini merupakan hasil pemenangan tender PT PAL INDONESIA (Persero) pada proses lelang yang juga diikuti oleh beberapa perusahaan galangan kapal di dunia. Setelah melaksanakan uji adminstrasi, teknis dan komersiil oleh panitya lelang pada akhir tahun 2013, maka PAL INDONESIA mendapatkan kepercayaan sebagai pelaksana pekerjaan proyek pembangunan Kapal SSV ini. Pada penandatanganan kontrak yang dilakukan di Manila Filipina ini, PT PAL INDONESIA (Persero) dihadiri langsung oleh Direktur Utama M Firmansyah Arifin dan didampingi Direktur Perencanaan & Pengembangan Usaha Eko Prasetyanto, Direktur Keuangan Imam Sulistiyanto, Kadiv Desain Gonot H, Kadiv Treasury Arif Cahyana, Kadiv Bisnis M. Proyek ini merupakan proyek prestisus yang merupakan pembuktian PT PAL INDONESIA (Persero) mampu berkompetisi dialam proses tender Internasional. Kebesaran ini telah dimulai dengan proses pembangunan beberapa kapal perang pesanan TNI Angkatan Laut, diantaranya kapal Kawal Cepat Rudal (KCR-60), Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR-105) dan Kapal Selam. Selain dari proyek tersebut PAL INDONESIA juga berpengalaman dalam memproduksi kapal patroli cepat dan inilah yang menjadi cikal bakal kepercayaan user dalam memesan kapal. Sementara itu kapal pesanan Filipina ini merupakan peningkatan/upgrade dari kapal jenis pengangkut yang pernah diproduksi oleh PT PAL INDONESIA (Persero) yakni Landing Platform Dock (LPD-125). SSV pesanan Filipina ini memiliki kapasitas panjang kapal 123 meter, lebar 21,8 meter dan berkapasitas 7.000 Ton. SEA TRANSPORT APL, Maersk and OOCL to cooperate on Far East to Indian Subcontinent services HONG KONG – APL, Maersk and OOCL today announced a new cooperation on three existing Far East to Indian Subcontinent services, starting in February 2014. In a Slot Sharing Agreement that also includes partners CMA CGM, Emirates Shipping Line, Hamburg Süd and Regional Container Lines, 18 vessels with a total capacity of about 17,500 TEU will be deployed to the three Far East-Indian Subcontinent services. SALE OF THE VLCC LUXEMBOURG Euronav NV , announced that it has sold its
oldest double-hulled VLCC Luxembourg (1999 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; 299,150 dwt), for $28 million (USD). The vessel is wholly owned by Euronav. The capital gain on that sale of about $6 million will be recorded at delivery. The net cash proceeds available to Euronav after the mandatory repayment of its debt obligation will be $5 million. The vessel is foreseen to be delivered to its new owner between May 1, 2014 and mid June 2014 which should allow for two more
profitable voyages prior to her delivery. The vessel will be converted to a FPSO by her new owner and will therefore leave the worldwide VLCC trading fleet. Academy The Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) and Thales have signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which aims at establishing a Rail Academy in the United Arab Emirates. This cooperation between CERT and Thales is in line with the UAE Government strategy to develop and sustain national assets and human capital in the UAE’s high-tech industry fields. The Rail Academy will be dedicated to the creation and deployment of high-level professional and academic training programmes to support the UAE’s main line rail and urban transport developments. This MoU adds to an already long-term partnership initiated in 1999 between Thales and HCT/CERT when both companies set up the Joint Venture CERT Thales Institute, providing technical training solutions in the UAE in the domain of defence. The sum of effects of locking, blocking, direct and frictional lashing are allowed to be used to prevent the load from moving including sliding, tilting, rolling, wandering, substantial deformation and rotation. Load securing arrangements to prevent load from sliding, tilting and rolling should be designed in accordance with the instructions in the quick lashing guide in Annex III or equivalent instruction. To use the quick lashing guide, the following need to be considered: • Securing direction • Securing method and equipments • Friction • Dimensions/center of gravity • Mass of the load If lashings are used to prevent both sliding and tipping over, proceed as follows: • Calculate separately the number of lashings required to prevent sliding and the number of lashings required to prevent tipping over. The highest figure is the minimum number of lashings required. In cases where the load is blocked, the weight of the load secured by the lashings can be

The load securing arrangement in the different Cargo Transport Unit’s (CTU) depends on the type of load as well as side walls, headboard and rear wall strength. Figure 4 compares strength requirements of CTU side walls, headboard and rear wall.

Stanchions for roll-type loads, should provide transverse blocking against roll forces emanating from cylindrical packages. They should be designed so that, together, they can withstand a lateral force equivalent to 50% of the maximum load weight at half the load height (H/2) above the vehicle platform for road transport.
Loads transported by road are often contained in packages. The CMR convention does not enforce packaging requirements, but relieves the carrier of his liability for loss or damage if the load is not properly packed. Depending on the type of product and the mode of transport, the main function of the packaging can be: • weather protection • supporting the product during loading and unloading • preventing product damage • enabling efficient load securing
For packages being bottom blocked only: • The packaging can be considered as stable based on acceleration sideways and towards the rear if the package is able to withstand a tilt angle of at least 26.6° (rounded 27°) without any significant deformation (Fig.11) • The packaging can be considered as stable based on acceleration forward if the package is able to withstand a tilt angle of at least 38.7° (rounded 39°) without any significant deformation

IRU publishes Safe Load Securing Guidelines to further increase road safety International Road Transport Union (IRU)
publishes International Guidelines on Safe Load Securing for Road Transport to promote safe practices for the transport of goods by road. Geneva - The IRU International Commission on Technical Affairs (CIT) today published International Guidelines on Safe Load Securing for Road Transport to promote safe load securing practices to all stakeholders involved in the

transport of goods by road and further increase road safety. While the IRU guidelines are primarily based on a European standard on load restraining on road vehicles (EN 12195-1:2010), they also include other safe practices observed across the road transport industry, such as timber and vehicle transport as well as others, not covered by the European standard. According to Mårten Johansson, President of the IRU CIT, “The aim of these guidelines is to enable ALL stakeholders involved

Restraining methods are principally the following: • locking • blocking • direct lashing • top-over lashing • combinations of methods in conjunction with friction
Effective securing of the load by blocking requires close stowage of the packages both against the load carrier’s blocking fixtures and between the individual packages. When the load does not fill the space between the side and end boards, and is not otherwise secured the gaps must be filled with a filler material to create compressive forces that ensure a satisfactory blocking of the load. These compressive forces should be proportionate to the total load weight.
The restraining method(s) used should be able to withstand the varying climatic conditions (temperature, humidity etc) likely to be encountered during the journey. Annex II demonstrates several illustrations of securing methods and equipment.
4.1 Blocking

Void spaces should be filled and may be favourably stuffed by empty pallets inserted vertically and tightened by additional timber battens as necessary. Material which may deform or shrink permanently, like rags of gunny cloth or solid foam of limited strength, should not be used for this purpose. Small gaps between unit loads and similar load items, which cannot be avoided and which are necessary for the smooth packing and unpacking of the goods, are acceptable and need not to be filled. The sum of void spaces in any horizontal direction should not exceed 15 cm – height of standard pallet. However, between dense and rigid load items, such as steel, concrete or stone, void spaces should be further minimized, as far as possible.

4.1.2 Threshold blocking and panel blocking

When there are large gaps between the load and blocking fixtures, and high bracing forces, it is often appropriate to use blocking braces fitted with sufficiently strong wooden spacers. It is essential that blocking braces are fixed in such a way that the spacers are always at right angles to the load that is being braced. This will ensure that the blocking braces are more able to resist the forces exerted by the load.
• Goods pallets Goods pallets are often a suitable form of filler material. If this clearance towards the blocking is larger than the height of a EURO pallet (about 15 cm) then the gap could be filled with, for example, such pallets standing on end, for the load to be properly blocked. If the clearance towards the sideboards on any side of the load section is smaller than the height of a EURO pallet then the gap to the sideboard must be filled with suitable filling, for example planks of wood.
On load carriers that have robust wooden platform beds of good quality, base blocking can be achieved by nailing wooden battens directly to the floor. The maximum closure force per nail can be found in the Quick Lashing Guide. For load securing with blocking only, it is recommended to have a height of about 50 mm.
When threshold or panel blocking is used at the rear, at least two sections of the bottom layer must be behind the blocking section. Fig. 17. Threshold blocking of upper layer in forward direction
Wedges can be used to prevent cylindrical objects moving along the loading platform (see figures 20 and 21).
4.1.5 Lashing

4.1.5.2 Loop lashing
4.1.5.3 Spring lashing
Loop lashing is a form of sling lashing load to one side of the vehicle body, thereby preventing the load from sliding towards the opposite side. To achieve doubleaction lashing, loop lashings must be used in pairs, which will also prevent the load from tipping over. Two pairs of loop lashings will be required to prevent the load from twisting longitudinally.
Spring lashing can be used to prevent tipping and/or sliding forwards or towards the rear.
The loop lashing ability to sustain the required traction force depends upon the strength of the lashing points among other things. Fig. 21. Blocked wedges
Using some form of base material, such as load pallets, the load section is raised so that a threshold is formed, and the upper load layer is base blocked longitudinally.

4.1.4 Wedges
When there is a height difference between various layers, threshold blocking or panel blocking can be used for base blocking of the upper layer against the lower layer.
Examples of some possible filler materials are shown hereafter.
4.1.3 Wooden battens nailed to the load platform
Spring lashing is a restraining method consisting of one or two slings over the corners of the load layer, the purpose of which is to prevent a load layer from tipping or sliding. Spring lashing may also be in the form of a single, closed round-sling, placed across the edge of the load layer and lashed by means of a diagonal lashing on each side. The angle to the load surface is measured in the longitudinal direction, and it is recommended that the angle is not more than 45°.

4.1.5.4 Round turn lashing Round turn lashing is, in combination with other forms of securing, a method to bind a number of packages together.
A lashing is a restraint device such as webbing, chain or wire rope that either ties load together or keeps load in contact with the load platform or any blocking device. Lashings should be positioned so that they are in contact only with the load to be secured and/or the securing points. They should not be bent over flexible items, side gates etc.
Horizontal round turn load lashing is applied by binding a number of packages together in load sections and therefore reduces to some extent the risk of the load tipping over. Fig. 26. Example a spring lashing preventing forward movement
4.1.5.1 Top-over lashing Top-over lashing is a method of securing where lashings are positioned over the top of the goods in order to prevent the load section from tipping or sliding. If there is no side blocking at the bottom, for example top-over lashing can be used to press the load section towards the platform bed. Contrary to blocking, topover lashing forces the load against the load platform.

If the packages are not sufficiently rigid and stable for threshold blocking, a corresponding blocking effect can be achieved by using panels consisting of boards or load pallets as shown in the figure below. Depending on the rigidity of the load packages, a blocking structure can be created to provide a large or small blocking surface.

Wedges should have an angle of about 37° toward the load, which is created out from the rectangular triangle whose sides are in the proportion 3, 4 and 5, where the 90° angle is upward. (Fig. 20).
Large empty spaces can alternatively be filled with empty pallets as shown below.

Blocking or bracing means that the load is stowed to lie flush against fixed structures and fixtures on the load carrier. These may be in the form of headboards, sideboards, sidewalls or stanchions. The load can be stowed directly or indirectly by means of filling against the fixed blocking devices built into the load carrier, and these prevent any horizontal movement of the load. In practice it is difficult to achieve a tight fit against the blocking devices and a small clearance usually remains. Gaps must be kept to a minimum, especially those to the headboard. The load should be blocked against the head board either directly or by the use of filler material in between.

Wedges should have a minimum height of R/3 (one third of the roll radius) if there is no top-over lashing. If used in conjunction with top-over lashing, no more than 200 mm is required.
• Air cushions Inflatable air cushions are available both as disposable items and as recyclable products. The cushions are easy to install and are inflated by compressed air, often by means of an outlet in the truck’s compressed air system. Suppliers of air cushions are expected to provide instructions and recommendations concerning load capacity and appropriate air pressure. For air cushions it is important to avoid damage as a result of wear and tear. Air cushions should never be used as filler against doors or any non rigid surfaces or partitions.

Even if there is neither sliding nor tipping risk, it is recommended to always use at least one top-over lashing with STF 400 daN per every 4 tonnes of load or similar arrangement to avoid significant displacement for non-blocked load due to vibrations.

A diagonal lashing with corner strap must be calculated taking into account the angle, the friction and the lashing capacity (LC) given on the label of the lashing as required by standard EN 12195-1:2010. The UK’s number one manufacturer of
specialised glass carrying commercial vehicles was today trading under new ownership, following its acquisition by the fast-growing Bevan Group. It is now ‘business as usual’ for the 20-strong company team at Supertrucks, who supply and fit glass-carrying bodies and ‘frails’ (racks) for rigid trucks and vans of all sizes. Supertrucks operates from a production facility in St Helens, Merseyside. It was founded in 1982, by former Chairman Peter Wright, who is staying on for the time being in a consultancy role. The decision by West Midlands-based bodybuilder Bevan Group to purchase the business – for an undisclosed sum – comes less than a year after it launched its own glass carrying vehicle. Bevan quickly won orders for more than 70 units from two of the biggest names in the industry. However, as Managing Director Anthony Bevan acknowledges: “When it comes to designing and manufacturing systems that allow for the safe transportation of glass by customers from the glazing and related windows and conservatories industries, Supertrucks is the undoubted market leader.” Bevan’s financial muscle, as well as its sales and marketing expertise, mean Supertrucks has a bright future. “Supertrucks represents an exciting new addition to the Bevan Group portfolio and we look forward to growing the business with the enthusiastic support of the team in St Helens,” continues Anthony. As well as dominating the UK market Supertrucks exports its glass carrying products, with Germany accounting for the

majority of overseas sales. The company has also diversified and recently launched a light weight, low height box van for carrying dry freight, which has proved particularly popular with customers from the furniture industry. “Supertrucks has been a very successful company for the last 32 years and enjoys an unrivalled reputation within the glass industry,” says Peter Wright. “With its high quality, specialised range of products, and a committed, loyal workforce who know exactly what is required to serve this niche market, I have no doubt that this business will prove a sound investment for its new owners.” Its acquisition of Supertrucks caps an incredible 12 months for family-owned Bevan Group, which has headquarters in Halesowen and a second factory in nearby Oldbury. KAMAZ Vehicles for the UN The Russian
government plans to allocate 727 million roubles to buy KAMAZ trucks for the UN World Food Program. This resolution was drafted by the Finance Ministry fulfilling the Russian presidential instruction to replenish the truck fleet used for transportation of relief supplies under the UN WFP project. It is planned to allocate 727 million roubles from the federal budget in 2014-2015 years. Russia’s EMERCOM will purchase KAMAZ high-sided vehicles, bowsers and mobile auto repair shops with sets of spare parts on the inner market of the Russian Federation. The vehicles will be handed over as Russia’s natural fee to the UN World Food Program. It is expected that 436 million rubles will be allocated to purchase KAMAZ vehicles this year and up to 291 million roubles next year. The supplier of the vehicles – ZAO FTC KAMAZ (Foreign Trade Company KAMAZ) – plans to ship 100 vehicles in 2014, including high-sided trucks KAMAZ-43118 and KAMAZ-6520, bowsers, and mobile auto repair shops on KAMAZ-43114 chassis. The vehicles will be delivered to Afghanistan, Ghana and Uganda in 2014.
In addition, the Russian government will allot $1.6 million as a target fee in the UN WFP to develop logistical potential, including integration of KAMAZ vehicles in regional truck fleets of the program.

Leading competitors test their skills in six rounds held around the globe throughout the year for the right to take part in the event’s climax – the final in Madrid at the end of the season. The UK heat took place at the Sheffield Arena in early January. Competitors had to negotiate a number of rounds – each of which featured a series of obstacles made up of anything from building skips to natural rocks and logs weighing up to 3 tonnes. For each round, the course layout had to be changed to ensure that the riders’ skills were fully challenged. With several thousand spectators inside the Sheffield Arena and a global television audience of several million

delivered the Türksat 4A telecommunications satellite from Japan to Kazakhstan in its latest specialist delivery on behalf of the space industry. The spacecraft was placed into a special container for its flight onboard one of the airline’s An-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ freighters. The total weight of the cargo was 60 tons. During the flight and technical stops a constant temperature of 10°C was maintained to protect the satellite’s sensitive technology. The high value space equipment also required precise and delicate handling during the loading and unloading. Experts from Japan arrived in Kazakhstan onboard the An-124-100 to participate in the launch of the Türksat 4A satellite from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which is scheduled to take place in February. Volga-Dnepr is one of the world’s leading transporters of aerospace cargo and its personnel have extensive experience of managing projects for the industry all over the world. In 2013, Volga-Dnepr Airlines carried more than 50 space industry shipments and since its launch over 20 years ago, the airline has successfully operated more than 3,500 flights delivering satellites and other aerospace equipment. The Türksat 4A telecommunications satellite was produced by the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation in Japan on behalf of Turkey’s communications satellite operator Türksat AS. Boeing to Start Building First Next-Generation 737 at Increased Production Rate RENTON, Wash.,Boeing [NYSE: BA] is starting
assembly this week of the first Next-Generation 737 to be built at the increased rate of 42 airplanes per month. Since 2010, production of the 737 has increased about 33 percent, from 31.5 to 42 airplanes a month, its highest rate ever. Early Wednesday morning, mechanics will load initial parts of the spars – internal support structures in the wings – into an automated spar-assembly machine. The spar is the first step in building the wings and marks the start of the assembly of the airplane at the Renton, Wash. factory. “This rate increase once again reflects our commitment to put the world’s best-selling airplane into the hands of our customers as quickly as possible,” said Beverly Wyse, vice
president and general manager, 737 Program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “Efficiency improvements in the factory, many of them developed by our employees, are a big part of why we are able to successfully increase the number of airplanes we build.” The first Next-Generation 737 built at the new rate is scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter. As previously announced, the 737 production rate is scheduled to increase to 47 airplanes a month in 2017.

(NYSE: FDX) and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., announced today at the Washington Auto Show that the two companies will start testing the Nissan e-NV200, a 100% electric compact cargo vehicle under real world conditions in Washington, D.C. This test marks the first time the vehicle will be operating in North America. FedEx Express and Nissan have conducted similar e-NV200 tests with fleets in Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Brazil. FedEx and Nissan are both committed to reducing the environmental impact of their operations worldwide. Rotating the Nissan e-NV200 into the delivery fleet is part of the FedEx EarthSmart program, a global sustainability platform designed to guide the company’s environmental commitment in the communities where it operates. For Nissan, this effort aligns with its “Blue Citizenship” corporate social responsibility program with a focus on increasing the number of vehicles that emit no greenhouse gases by exploring additional vehicle segments where its leading electric vehicle technology may be applied. The e-NV200 delivers unique, emission-free and quiet performance thanks to a powertrain based on Nissan LEAF. The e-NV200 is powered by the same advanced lithium-ion battery composed of 48 compact modules mated with a high-response, 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque. It emits no carbon dioxide, compared to approximately 140 g of CO2/km emitted by gas-powered engines in a similar vehicle. The e-NV200 can be charged up to 80 percent of its full capacity in less than 30 minutes when equipped with a quick charge port and using a fast charger.

For the MINI-E program BMW chose Clipper Creek EVSE equipment and moved on to use equipment from AeroVironment for the ActiveE program. The switch to Schneider Electric demonstrates how the electric vehicle charging equipment is still in it’s infancy and how manufacturers are still trying to figure out who to partner with. I’m sure BMW put a lot more effort into sorting out who would offer their customers the best products and services this time around since they will finally be offering a production EV to the public as compared to the relatively small pilot programs of the MINI-E and ActiveE. Instead of a couple hundred customers that need EVSE equipment, they will be catering to tens of thousands of new customers every year. There is no word yet as to whether BMW i will be offering a custom designed wall charger as seen in the picture (presumably made by Schneider Electric) or if that was just for show and BMW i customers will use the standard EVSE’s that Schneider Electric currently offers. The one thing I like about the current EVSE they offer is the option to wire it to a 240V plug and install a 40amp 240V outlet in your garage. This allows you to unplug the unit and take it with you. Google will buy wind energy generated by 29 wind turbines in Sweden

and Google have signed a ten year agreement in which Google will buy all electricity generated by 29 wind turbines that Eolus establishes in four wind farms in southern Sweden. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), means that Google during ten years starting in early 2015 will buy all renewable electricity produced by the 29 turbines of the models Vestas V90, V100 and V112. Along with the wind turbine supply agreement, Eolus and Vestas have signed a ten-year full service agreement. Eolus will after commissioning operate and manage the facilities. Total installed capacity is 59 MW. Eolus financial strength is an important component of the deal since the contract is signed directly with Google as the buyer of the electricity. The long-term contract ensures that Eolus can offer investors an interesting investment opportunity in the Swedish market. -Our agreement with Google is a further endorsement of the potential of wind power in the Nordic countries said Hans-Christian Schulze, deputy CEO of Eolus. –We´re looking forward to building our new wind farms over the year and helping Google stay ahead of its commitment to carbon neutrality. The Initiative will collect information on cases of corruption along major international trade routes on 5 continents. An online questionnaire completed by road transport companies and truck drivers will help identify the areas of business and administrative activities, as well as geographic locations, that are most vulnerable to extortion and bribery. Results will be compiled into a final report providing specific recommendations to combat such corruption. 30 million new EPAL/EPAL Euro pallets produced since August The European
Pallet Association e. V. (EPAL) has recorded production of the 30-millionth Euro pallet with the EPAL logo on four corner blocks. The pallets produced throughout Europe exclusively under the EPAL licence have been coming off the line since the 1st August 2013. Robert Holliger, president of EPAL, presented these results on Saturday 1st February 2014 at the EUROBLOCK customer forum in Freising, organised by EUROBLOCK Verpackungsholz GmbH. In 2013, licence holders produced a total of 63.7 million EPAL pallets and repaired 21.6 million EPAL wooden cargo carriers. “The high production figures are testimony to the success of the EPAL/EPAL pallet and demonstrate just how well the One Brand cargo carriers are being received by the users” says Martin Leibrandt, Chief Executive Officer of EPAL. EPAL/ EPAL pallets are exchangeable without limitation within the open pool and fulfil the internationally uniform quality standards. “The number of licence holders is experiencing strong growth in countries in which EPAL was previously less active. In the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary in particular, we are witnessing a high demand for our licences” explains Martin Leibrandt. Since the 1st August 2013 a total of 14 new licences have been awarded in these countries, which are to remain a focus of EPAL. “EPAL is set to continue pursuing this development. GLOBAL Halt in expansion of Panama Canal could cause major delays - arbitrators and that other contractors could finish the project to build a third set of locks for the canal, the heart of the expansion. The PCA, a semi-government entity, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the letter’s contents. However, earlier on Wednesday, Panama’s President Ricardo Martinelli vowed the work would be completed. “Panama has the resources, and will finish work by 2015 regardless of what happens, rain, thunder or lightning,” he said at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
If work on the expansion of the Panama Canal is
suspended, it could take up to five more years to finish, according to arbitrators helping to oversee the project that has been hit by a dispute over costs. Since the start of 2014, the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) has been embroiled in a public row with the consortium known as Grupo Unidos Por el Canal (GUPC) over $1.6 billion in additional costs the GUPC says have arisen during work on the project. Though the spat only recently went public, discussions over added costs have been going on since 2010, and advisers on the project’s Dispute Adjudication Board (DAB) said in a letter written in December that any hold-ups would be serious. “If GUPC was to stop work now, the canal would be finished, but not in 2015 - more likely in 2018, 2019, or 2020,” the panel of independent international advisers said in the document, a copy of which was seen by Reuters on Wednesday. “The enormous losses to (the PCA) - which have not only a severe financial impact but also would seriously damage its credibility and reputation - can only be imagined,” the DAB added in the letter that was sent to both sides of the dispute. The planned completion date for the expansion of the 50-mile (80-km) canal has already been delayed from 2014 to mid-2015. If the canal authorities do not help pay for cost overruns, the consortium of construction companies - fronted by Spanish firm Sacyr - has threatened to suspend work on the project that aims to double the waterway’s shipping capacity and bring in billions of dollars in new revenue for Panama. The PCA has refused, warning the GUPC it could be dismissed

The DAB letter described the GUPC’s shortfall as “genuine” but added the $3.12 billion bid which the consortium made to clinch the deal for the locks in 2009 was likely too low. That bid was $1 billion below the second-lowest offer tendered by a group fronted by U.S. engineering company Bechtel. Top Panamanian officials and others close to the deal have raised concerns that the bid was too low. “But horsewhipping or pointing the finger of blame will not save this project,” the DAB wrote. The DAB must help arbitrate the dispute over costs, which has been ongoing since 2010. But the letter stated its views on the potential delays did not have any bearing on the claims. The PCA held talks with GUPC earlier this week and canal administrator Jorge Quijano said a potential financing deal involving insurer Zurich North America had been proposed that could offer a long-term solution to the project. Nevertheless, the two sides have yet to agree on how much each party could provide to bridge the funding gap. The DAB letter said the GUPC appeared to need a cash injection of $250 million to $500 million to keep work going. As talks began on Tuesday, the consortium, which includes Italy’s Salini Impregilo, Belgium’s Jan De Nul and Panama’s Constructora Urbana, pushed back its possible suspension of the work until the end of January. Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has pledged strong support for a new initiative to pursue the conclusion of a deal to liberalize trade in green goods and services, calling on more countries to join the drive for a deal which could inject up to US$10.3 billion in additional exports and augment employment gains by 256,000 jobs, according to an ICC commissioned report. The initiative was launched today in Davos by Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Costa Rica, the European Union, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, and the United States at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and is the latest step to move global trade talks out of the Doha Development Agenda deadlock and build on momentum following the successful outcome of the WTO Ministerial Conference in Bali in December 2013. ICC Chairman Harold (Terrry) McGraw said: “Building on the success of Bali, concluding a new plurilateral treaty to liberalize trade in green goods and services will be another demonstration of the benefits of working within the World Trade Organization to conclude new agreements for the 21st Century.
