MOTHER OF THE BRIDE Rachel Parry, Features Editor at Brides Up North, tells us why the mother of the bride’s role is so important

hen it comes to assisting you in the run up to the big day, honesty will usually be one of your mum’s top qualities. This is the person that quite possibly knows you better than you know yourself. You’ll be able to tell if you’ve found ‘the dress’ from your mum’s facial expressions alone. If the bridesmaid dresses just aren’t working, mum will be there to keep you calm and get you through any problems. Here are some tips for getting mum involved, without treading on your toes.

As well as giving their opinions, mums often like to get hands on too, so think about what talents she has and how these can be put to best use. Some ladies may be lucky enough to have star baker and dress maker mothers who can design the wedding cake and bridesmaids’ attire, but for those that don’t, mums can still get involved by helping to make smaller details such as invitations and decorations. return the favour and to help her shop for her special outfit. Some bridal shops stock fabulous mother of the bride collections, but alternatively if budgets won’t stretch, the high street offers some stunning options, too. Mother of the bride styles range from short fitted dresses to longer, fluid designs that often have matching jackets and coordinating accessories. Pretty lace dresses and those with floral prints are particularly popular at the moment, with designs varying in colour from elegant muted tones to vibrant jewel shades. MUM OF HONOUR

Finally, when it comes to the big day itself, your mum will be the one to help you get ready and – mostly importantly – keep you calm. Many mothers of the bride like to play host on the morning of the wedding and enjoy those last moments with their daughter before walking down the aisle. So let your mum be in charge of welcoming the hairdressers and makeup artist,

receiving any cards, presents, flowers, and providing you and your maids with a sparkling breakfast. Whether tears of nerves or joy, your mum will always provide a shoulder to cry on. Many thanks to our wonderful partners at Brides Up North for these great tips and ideas for the mother of the bride. A STUNNING SUMMER SOIRÉE

SOPHIE & JOE A combination of chic pastel shades made this day so pretty. Sophie tells her story... How did Joe propose?

"Joe knew the Salutation Gardens in Sandwich were important to me, as they reminded me of my Grandpa, so he booked us to stay there

on our anniversary. We took a walk around the gardens, then all of sudden he asked me to wait by some trees and disappeared! Then out of nowhere my special

friend, and owner of the Salutation (Dom from Gogglebox!), to help him put it together the day before.”

HOW DID YOU AND DANNY MEET?

Danny and I have been together for the past three years after a mutual friend set us up. On our first date we realised we had so much in common and had a lot of mutual friends, we were surprised we hadn’t met each other sooner! HOW DID DANNY PROPOSE?

He surprised me at Christmas with a trip to New York in February. On the second night of the trip we went to Central Park. It was freezing cold and there was snow all around. We sat on a bench and he presented me with a lovely book he’d made with a poem and photos of fun times we’d shared together. As I got to the end of the book, Danny was down on one knee with a ring asking me to marry him! WERE YOU EXPECTING IT AT ALL?

No, I was completely surprised! He’d manage to ask both my parents’ permission and told my best friend without me suspecting anything! When we returned from New York we had a big party to celebrate.

REAL STORIES: THE LIFE OF A

BRIDE TO BE

PART ONE – NEWLY ENGAGED NAME HEATHER BLEASE DATE ENGAGED 16TH FEBRUARY 2015 WEDDING DATE 23RD JULY 2016 VENUE KINGSTON ESTATE, STAVERTON

WHAT SUPPLIERS HAVE YOU BOOKED?

I took advice from friends and decided to book most of the suppliers early to ensure they were available for our date. So far we’ve booked Life Photographic – two lovely photographers from Falmouth – Cupcake Videos to film the big day, Posh Nosh catering, Emma Hewlett as our florist, and a local band called Bill Ding & the Skyscrapers.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEDDING DRESS?

I haven’t been dress shopping yet but I’m really looking forward to it! My friend wore a gorgeous Maggie Sottero dress when she got married last year and there are some lovely dresses on their website. I like delicate lace dresses and detailed beading but who knows what I’ll end up with! WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING TO PLAN SO FAR?

The budget was hard to plan because I didn’t know where

to start and I knew it would be one of the first things we’d have to do. Luckily I have a friend who works in the industry and she was able to advise me on approximate costs for things like flowers and venue hire. WHAT THEME DO YOU THINK YOU’LL HAVE?

I’m not really into bright colours so I think soft, neutral tones will work well. I like pearl, pink and champagne. We love to travel so we’re considering a theme around our favourite destinations. Danny did suggest a football theme but that idea didn’t last long! WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?

I can’t wait to say ‘I do’ and then officially be husband and wife. I think that will be the most nerve-racking bit and then we can relax and enjoy the day. We’ll catch up with Heather in six months’ time to see how her plans have come along – watch this space!

YOUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO

PERFECT PLANNING

BUDGETING & TIMINGS

T

he first big problem couples face when they start wedding planning is deciding on their budget. Whether you want a laid-back party or a super-glamorous affair, carefully considered budgeting is essential – knowing how long things really take and how much they actually cost! You’ve spent pretty much all the time you’ve been with your other half thinking about what your wedding would be like, from the type of dress you’ll wear to the flowers in your bouquet. But how often did you consider how much this dream day would cost? Weddings don’t come cheap, and there are plenty of costs we bet you would have never even thought of. Getting insurance, paying for the registrar, the cost of the marriage certificates,

generators and extra outdoor cooking facilities for marquee weddings. It’s these costs that can really add up, and turn your wedding from a dream into a financial nightmare.

Top 4 suppliers.. INSURANCE THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. AN ABSOLUTE MUST, AND IT DOESN’T COST THE EARTH! THE VENUE THE VENUE WILL DICTATE YOUR BUDGET, THEME AND EVEN YOUR DRESS, SO CHOOSE WISELY. THE PHOTOGRAPHER THE MEMORIES OF YOUR DAY WILL BE CAPTURED IN YOUR PHOTOS, SO DON’T SCRIMP HERE! THE DRESS NOT ONLY IS IT THE BIGGEST TALKING POINT, IT CAN ALSO BE A LARGE EXPENSE AND TAKE MANY MONTHS TO CHOOSE, DELIVER AND FIT.

Tackle the biggest (and most stressful!) parts of wedding planning with these top tips...

WHAT’S YOUR PRIORITY?

What you need to do is to prioritise what is important to you from the start. Once you’ve decided, allocate budgets accordingly. Make sure you do your research – guessing venue hire is £5,000 won’t do you any good. Many venues charge triple that! Ensure that you can realistically afford the final balance and work out how you’ll make savings to cater for it. No wedding is worth getting into huge amounts of debt for, so don’t overstretch yourselves.

THE GUEST LIST

TOUGH DECISIONS

ON N AT THE MO

EMMA JO STATIONERY

he dreaded guest list... Guaranteed to be the biggest headache of your wedding planning. Not only is it the one area that may cause rifts between you and family members, it will also take a huge bite out of your budget. So how are you meant to decide who makes the final cut? If you were invited to someone else’s wedding day, should you invite them to yours? What about great aunt Camilla who you haven’t seen for 20 years? And one of the biggest problems, of course, do you want to invite children?

Firstly, you must choose the venue of your dreams and see how many people they can cater for. Do a rough guest list before you book to see if the numbers can add up. Next you need to discuss costs per head and find out exactly how many people you can afford. Finally, you must make final decisions on who your guests should be. It’s very easy to say it’s your day so it must be your decision, but in reality that can’t always be the case. If your family has invested in your wedding, you should consider their feelings about family members. Sit down with your nearest and dearest before you decide.

SWOO

ANDREW COULTER PHOTOGRAPHY

Top ways to cut.. NO CHILDREN CUTTING OUT THE CUTIES WILL SAVE YOU LOTS OF MONEY AND ANY DISTRACTIONS DURING THE CEREMONY. WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE THEM? AS A GENERAL RULE, IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN OR HEARD FROM SOMEONE IN MORE THAN A FEW YEARS, THEY PROBABLY SHOULDN’T BE INVITED. GET MARRIED ABROAD! IT MAY SEEM A BIT EXTREME, BUT GETTING MARRIED ABROAD WILL DEFINITELY MEAN THAT ONLY THE PEOPLE WHO YOU REALLY WANT THERE WILL MAKE THE EFFORT TO COME. SMALL CEREMONY THE LATEST GUEST CUTTING TREND IS TO HAVE A SMALL CEREMONY WITH ONLY YOUR CLOSEST FAMILY, THEN AN EARLIER ‘EVENING’ PARTY WITH EVERYONE ELSE. WITH A LOWER COST PER HEAD, IT’S THE PERFECT WAY TO NOT OFFEND ANYONE!

very couple wants their day to look unique, and truly express their personalities, telling the tale of their romance up to the biggest day of their lives. But that’s a lot easier said than done! The little details are what make your day extra special, and will undoubtedly be the one thing your guests remember and comment on the most. From an extravagant cake to a retro sweet buffet, guests always appreciate the finer details. So here’s the dilemma – do you make the details yourself or hire a professional to do it for you? There are some areas you should always hire a professional, like the dress, photographer and florist, but you can be creative in other areas. Many brides like to make their own invites and table plans, or the favours and even the cake. This is a little touch that shouldn’t be too stressful, and could save you money, too. For dessert, buffet tables are popular with a choice of mini desserts for your guests to choose from, such as rhubarb posset, lemon tartlets and vanilla creme brûlées. Just make sure you have two to three desserts per person so everyone can sample a selection. Edible flowers are a fun and colourful addition to desserts, too.

Sharing starters of antipasti and salads are a great way for your guests to interact with others on their table, too. Cold mains such as poached salmon or roast beef are tasty light main courses when served with a selection of summer salads and breads. Our favourite summer desserts have to be pavlovas, Eton mess, fresh strawberries with vanilla whipped cream and mini macarons.

WINTER

Autumn is a beautiful time of year, associated with harvest and the leaves changing colour. Pumpkins, root vegetables, chestnuts and apples are delicious additions to menus and decor at this time of year. An autumn menu may include a roasted pumpkin soup with chili sweetcorn or a goat’s cheese and root vegetable tartlet followed by roasted chicken or rabbit with a mushroom sauce and creamy polenta, finished with a sharing board of cheeses served with figs and fresh apples. Pear crumble, apple or fig tartlets and chocolate chestnut cake are all fantastic autumnal desserts, too.

For the winter season, you’ll need to keep guests warm, starting with their drinks! Choose mulled wine or warm spiced cranberry instead of champagne for your drinks reception as a lovely nod to the season. Choose starters such as foie gras toasts or a winter salad of rocket, cranberry and blue cheese. Winter mains such as coq au vin or beef bourgignon are wonderful buffet mains served with creamy mash potatoes or roasted root vegetables. Chocolate mousse, pecan tartlets and tiramisu are decadent dessert choices for this time of year as well as delicious warm mince pies.

For Him And For Her A Tradition As Timeless As Marriage Itself

The Wedding Gold and Silver Set revisits the custom described in the 1549 Book of Common Prayer, which included the giving of gold and silver as part of the wedding ceremony. Add a traditional finishing touch to your wedding with this year-dated gift that will endure and be loved for years to come.
