FAKE DRESS THE FAKE LOOKS NOTHING LIKE WHAT WAS ADVERTISED
ORIGINAL DRESS THE REAL GOWN IS CAREFULLY MADE WITH DELICATE DETAILS
SHOCKING! ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A ‘DREAM DRESS’ ONLINE
COUNTERFEIT GOWNS Rob and Andrew from award-winning bridal boutique, Creatiques, tell us all about the devastation of fraudulent dress websites...
H
aving been in the industry for some years now, we really have seen it all. Something that we see time and time again is the horror of buying a gown online, and the awful reality when the gown arrives shortly before the wedding. A year or so ago, we had the pleasure of an appointment with a really lovely young woman whose dress budget was around £500. She fell head over heels
in love with a Sincerity gown that was a little over £800. Thanking us for our help, and determined to find the dress of her dreams within her budget, the bride left our boutique, only to return five months later in a state of panic and upset. She had visited a number of websites online and had come across the image of the dress she had fallen in love with in our boutique, but it was priced at an unbelievable £550. Still a little over her
The fit of the dress was poor, with the plastic boning of the wonky corset sticking out through the seams digging into her stomach. The bride was convinced by the image online that it was the dress of her dreams – the website she ordered it from looked professional, well polished and trustworthy – but this was not the case. As retailers, we can’t stress enough how important it is for you to buy your dress through a recommended stockist or authorised dealer. It wasn’t the first time we’d had a bride order a dress online only to be heartbroken with the outcome, and unfortunately, it most likely won’t be the last. BRIDESMAID NIGHTMARES
It’s not just the bride who can fall for online scams, we’ve had some awful tales of bridesmaid dress shopping online, too! From glued-on flowers that popped off the budget, the bride took a chance convinced that it was second they did the dresses up to hems that frayed as fate, and she would soon the day went on, we’ve seen be the proud owner of a beautiful, designer gown for a all sorts of horrible cases of fraction of the retailed price. bridesmaid terrors! This proved a fatal mistake, and when she arrived in our THANK YOU, BOYS! boutique again, the realisation THANKS TO ROB AND ANDREW of the risk she had taken and FOR SHARING THEIR STORY. VISIT THEIR GORGEOUS the mistake she had made hit SOUTHSEA BOUTIQUE NOW FOR her, then she broke down. THE BEST BRIDAL DESIGNS. CREATIQUES.CO.UK. The gown had arrived looking shabby, poorly stitched with beads hanging off. To top it off, the bride had ordered the dress in ivory and when it arrived it was in a bright white colour made from lining fabric. The so-called organza that was on the circular skirt was so full of static that it gave all of the team static shocks!

LOVELY LACE ONE TREND THAT JUST KEEPS GETTING BIGGER IS LACE
Catwalk trends
trends – the newest shapes, the latest embellishments, the must-have details – as well as the accessories that complete a look, and the inspirational thinking from the top designers. So what ticked all the boxes at the London Bridal Show in Olympia? Here’s my pick:
Bridal Buyer’s Editor at Large, Susi Rogol, reveals the top trends on this season’s catwalks
T
his time of the year the really big bridal shows are in full swing and boutique owners are choosing what they think you will love. The recent London Bridal Show produced some real treats. If you think finding your dream dress is a challenge, think about the buyers who might see hundreds of collections in order to pull together a selection that they
feel will have the greatest appeal. Some ranges have 200 dresses for retailers to sift through, and on top of that, offer a choice of fabrics, finishes and colours. By the time you get to your first appointment, so much work has gone on behind the scenes, often over many months. What the trade shows do is introduce the incoming
FUNKY FOOTWEAR HEELS NOT FOR YOU? HOW ABOUT WEDDING TRAINERS?
NEW COLOURS Barely there, and often under a layer of lace or tulle. The newest trend is the palest shades of sand, a favourite at Tanya Grig.

LACE This shows no signs of losing ground, but is instead taking new twists and turns with added intricate detail.
collar that frames the face. Very stylish, very chic. Tres Chic has some great options on fit and flare gowns, so does Ladybird.
SLINK Dresses that are a sliver of fabric that clings to the body, with plunging necklines and wide-open backs. I loved Eddy K’s v-neck dress covered with silver and white beading.
FEATHERS A flurry of them. Trimming hems, edging light-as-air shawls. At the Textile Forum fabric show, everyone was showing their version of fully feathered chiffons, so you just know that one of the next big things. See Ruth Milliam for great featherfilled designs.
A BIT OF BOHO Soft fabrics, often fluted, always layered, ribbons, and soft floaty straps with wing-like sleeves. Add lace edgings and a bit of pastel colour and you’ve got the perfect picture. This is a look that works brilliantly with a halo of flowers in the hair. Lilly is a company to consider if this is your style. COLLARS Okay, this could be a serious trend. Imagine, a halterneck dress. Add a little stand up
TATTOOS A real fashion statement, with beautiful lace motifs on sheer tulle that give the impression of intricate ‘tattoos’ on the skin, especially on the back, but also on sleeves. Mark Lesley has some wonderful examples, as does Mori Lee.
LAYER UP LAYERS ARE STILL SUPER POPULAR, ESPECIALLY TULLE OVERLAYS

RUTH MILLIAM
PLAIN Another new label, Grace Philips, is one to watch. They reckon that plain is the place to be and the look to have, so there’s not a bead in sight. It is all down to cut and curve with them, fabulous shapes, gorgeous detailing like huge bows. Nothing frilly, nothing fancy, and the finished look is seriously cool.
LAYERING Still news, but taking on a whole new meaning. Lillian West did it asymmetrically, with ruffles and borders, in fact, layers of every description. So flatter, adding flounce and volume but in a slim way.
WILLOWBY
TRAINERS Yes, that’s right, trainers! A brand new company called Florence has produced an ivory leather trainer, covered in tiny laser-cut leather flowers. This has to be the season’s essential fashion piece. Other shoes in their collection were great, too, but the trainers did it for me.

A GORGEOUS WEDDING IN THE LAKE DISTRICT
R ACHEL & SCOTT Bridal dress designer, Rachel, marries her teenage sweetheart! The bride tells her story How did Scott propose?
“I’d shown Scott my dream engagement ring with a big hint, but he’d already started planning his proposal. I had no idea that he’d asked my dad if he could marry me (which dad was delighted with, as we’d been together since we were teenagers), got the ring and kept it all a secret. When he got down on one knee on Christmas Eve I burst into tears, I was so surprised!” 70 ♥ L OV E O U R W E D D I N G ♥ M A Y 2 0 1 6
What dress did you wear? “I’m a bridal designer for Hazaar of London, so being the bride was both great, and tricky. You can have anything you like, but that makes it really hard to settle on one design. When I tried on one of our fitted lace and chiffon gowns, I instantly
fell in love with it. I’d always loved our long to short Violet gown, so based my dress on it. I changed the neckline, added spaghetti straps with pewter beading on velvet ribbon, and added one of my favourite lace and beaded belts from our accessories.”
And the accessories?
“I chose a delicate brow band by Corrine Smith Design. I’d long admired Rachel Simpson’s beautiful shoes, so chose Ginger in gold.”

HOW LONG UNTIL THE BIG DAY?
Just over three months to go until the wedding, I’m starting to get nervous now. HOW ARE YOU FEELING?
I’m really looking forward to the big day. Over the past few months, Danny and I have been busy planning and we’re really excited for the wedding. No doubt I will be stressed out nearer the time though!
WHAT’S BEEN THE BEST BIT ABOUT PLANNING?
For me one of the highlights has been choosing my dress because it’s such a special experience. I brought my mum, future mother-in-law and bridesmaids dress shopping with me and it was good to have their input. However, if you ask Danny, he will probably say the menu tasting was the best part! WHAT’S BEEN THE HARDEST PART OF THE PLANNING PROCESS?
Choosing the guest list has been really hard as we are restricted on numbers. We wish we could invite everyone to the day but unfortunately it’s just not possible.

Secure a wedding venue early Whether you’re after a rustic barn, a luxurious mansion in the country or a stately home, shopping for the ideal wedding venue should be at the very top of your wedding to-do list. Book a registrar If you’re having a civil wedding ceremony, then don’t forget to secure your registrar at the same time as bookin g your venue – just to ensure you’ve got someone to actuall y ‘marry you’ on the day. Book wedding insurance It’s always advisable to book wedding insurance once you’ve booked a venue or exchanged money on anything related to your wedding. We’re not assuming that something unfortunate is going to happen, but it’s nice to know you’ve got it, just for peace of mind. Shop for your dress early Besides having to choose ‘the one’ from thousands of different designs, there’s also the chance that your perfect wedding gown will need to be ordered and may take up to 6 months to be delivered. Don’t leave it to chance ! Thank your suppliers After having recovered from your amazing weddi ng day, don’t forget to give your venue and suppliers a shout out by leaving them a great review if you think they did a fab job! THE BRIDAL SUITE The bridal suite is most likely where you and your bridesmaids will get ready on the morning of the wedding, as well as where you’ll spend your first night as husband and wife. Check whether the cost of the room is included in your package as many venues offer this room free of charge.
