‘Being a bridesmaid gave me the boost I needed’
Holly lost 3.5 stone after a friend asked her to be a bridesmaid...
Holly Weir, 27, is a media planning manager and a Slimming World Consultant for the Levenshulme group in Manchester, where she lives with her fiancé, Jono. Holly is 5ft 8in tall and weighs 10st 2lbs, having lost 3st 7lbs at Joanne Newbury’s Slimming World group in Didsbury, Manchester. Holly remembers when her weight gain began. “One of my earliest memories of being
overweight is a primary school teacher humiliating me in front of my friends,” says Holly. “She said I was so big, I wasn’t able to fit into the standard uniform. I can still remember how ashamed I felt. I wasn’t aware that there was anything wrong with my diet. I came from a family where we had big appetites, so I thought it was natural to be larger.” By the age of 14, Holly had been on numerous diets, but nothing worked long-term. “I got into a pattern of losing
then regaining the same stone or so, and was around a size 16 by the time I started university,” explains Holly. “When I met my fiancé, Jono, I couldn’t understand what he saw in me. It didn’t matter how many times Jono said that he loved me for who I was, I felt like people were looking at us and wondering why we were together.” After graduating, Holly started a job as a media planner. On the outside she

came across as confident and outgoing, but on the inside she hated the way she looked. “I covered up whenever I could in baggy clothes to disguise my tummy, hips and thighs, never imagining that things could be any different,” says Holly. “The turning point came at Christmas 2014 when Jono and I were invited to be witnesses at a friend’s wedding. While I felt OK on the day in my gold sequinned dress, I wasn’t at all happy when I saw the photos. My best friend, Hannah, had invited me to be a bridesmaid at her wedding that summer, and I couldn’t face the thought of more unflattering pictures.”
Holly joined Slimming World in January 2015 and straight away knew it was right for her. “I’d been expecting to have to give up my beloved pasta, potatoes and wine,” explains Holly. “Finding instead that there were no banned foods was a real plus, especially as my job involves lots of parties, receptions and meals out. I’d just need to plan ahead, choosing pasta in tomato sauces and lean steaks with any dressings or sauces on the side. Slimming World macaroni cheese was one of my go-to dishes when I
was cooking at home, along with barbecue pulled pork, which was a real crowd-pleaser whenever we had friends over for a meal. In my first week I lost 4½lbs and was so excited. It gave me the courage to start exercising again, too. These days, I enjoy it so much that I go most mornings before work!” Holly’s weight loss didn’t stop there! “I carried on losing 2lbs or so almost every week,
so that just before Hannah’s wedding day in July, I’d lost a whole 3st,” smiles Holly. “I must have given the dressmaker nightmares because every time I went for a fitting, my measurements had gone down again! On the day, I felt wonderful in my gorgeous floor-length, yellow dress. Since then, I’ve settled at a weight that feels genuinely right for me. It’s

great to be able to pick up a size 10 and know it will fit.” As well as her weight loss, Holly had much more to celebrate on the horizon! “After eight years together, I loved the idea of getting married to Jono and had been dropping not-sosubtle hints that I’d like a ring!” laughs Holly. “We were travelling to see my mum, who lives in Mallorca, for my birthday. For a whole 12 days beforehand, he kept buying me little presents, before finally going down on one knee. I was so surprised and, of course, I said yes.”
Enjoy a taste of the east with this takeaway favourite... SERVES 4 READY IN 30 MINUTES INGREDIENTS 350g dried long-grain, Thai fragrant or jasmine rice Low-calorie cooking spray 2 eggs 1 onion, finely chopped 150g mushrooms, finely sliced 400g peeled raw king or tiger prawns 125g frozen peas, thawed 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp oyster sauce INSTRUCTIONS 1. Cook the rice according to the packet instructions, then drain and cool under cold running water. Meanwhile, spray a large non-stick wok or deep frying pan with a little lowcalorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. 2. Whisk the eggs in a small jug with 1 tablespoon of water, pour into the wok and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the omelette,
cook for 1 more minute, then remove from the pan and set aside to cool. Add a little more low-calorie cooking spray to the wok, turn the heat down to medium and cook the onion, mushrooms and prawns for 5-6 minutes, until the prawns are pink and nearly cooked through.

3. Add the cooled rice and cook for a further 4 minutes, then add the peas and cook for 2 minutes. Slice the omelette into thin strips and add to the rice with the soy sauce and the oyster sauce. Fold everything together for a minute to heat through and serve hot.

It was such fun to read all the notes after the wedding. Also, my mother handmade over 50 little felt birds, which were either given as thank you gifts, hidden around the tables, or placed peeking
out amongst the flowers. Each one was different, and I couldn’t believe how detailed they were.”
What was the highlight of your day?
“Getting married to Simon was the very best part and so special, but to do it with all of our family and closest friends there was simply wonderful. Also, we did the final dance of the night and all of our

How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle? “I was on cloud nine! My dad was on my arm, tears in his eyes, and as I approached the aisle and Daniel turned around, he was crying, too! He looked so happy and so handsome. It was a very surreal and
proud moment; such an amazing feeling to know everybody there was so happy for us and so excited to be with us on our special day, about to watch us marry.”
Who were your bridesmaids and what dresses did they wear?
“My two younger sisters, Daisy and Beau, and my best friend, Sophie. Their multi-way dresses were from Debenhams.”
What was your best buy? “My dress! I also loved our little personalised silver confetti on the tables. The flip flops went down well, too – by the end of the night, most of the ladies were wearing them saving their sore feet so they could dance all night!”
What’s your saving tip? “Keep a budget planner because weddings can soon become very
expensive and when it is written down, it helps to control the spending. Also, accept help from friends and family. My sister made our cake, my mum put together all of our flowers, bouquets and buttonholes and my cousin made our order of service, menus and table plan. If you know anyone creative, ask them to help you with anything like this as their wedding gift, and it will save you £££s.”

While looking for wedding dress shops in my area online, I’d seen a picture of it in a sample sale in the right size and knew it was the one. I made an appointment to try it on and it was everything I’d hoped for and more.”

Debenhams. After trying on a few different suits in blue and grey, this one was definitely the nicest fit and best quality. The only downside was that it didn’t have a matching waistcoat, which Sam had wanted from the beginning. On the way back to the car we cut
through BHS and spotted a waistcoat in the same shade. It seemed too good to be true, but he tried it on and it matched! He also wore a pair of black Vans.”

“We didn’t have a particular theme, we just went with what we liked. This ended up being lots of white flowers – hydrangea, roses and carnations mainly – with plenty of pretty foliage and gold accessories. We
