e’re getting ever closer to 2018, which is why this issue we’re looking at all the top dresses, trends and details for next year’s weddings. Brides, you’re in for a treat! This issue we’ve got dress shopping tips before, during and after you purchase (page 45), amazing DIY hair and beauty ideas to try at home (page 85), a list of the best countries to say ‘I do’ overseas, and the best providers of these services (page 135). My favourite feature this issue is where we’ve asked real brides who have been there, done that, what the biggest issues were when planning their big day (page 129). OK, that might sounds a bit doom and gloom, but it’s good to know that not everyone finds wedding planning easy, and mishaps often happen along the way. JADE PEPPERELL I hope you enjoy the issue! Editor

My favourite picks this month! 1. I’m really excited

5

about the new Polly & Bella accessory collection that is starting to hit UK stores! This Safira headband is my favourite 2. The new Catherine Parry collection is full of fabulous dresses, but my top pick is Cara 3. A really classy shoe – I adore Octavia by Rachel Simpson 4. A traditionalstyle invitation from Kate Ruth Romey 5. With so many beautiful spots for photographs, Weston Hall in Stafford is an idyllic venue

top spend in mind when it comes to dress shopping. Bear in mind that the average bride spends around £1,385 on her wedding dress, and don’t forget to include your alterations and accessories in your bridal budget. Once you’ve got a top number, stick to it – do NOT try anything on over that price, as you risk falling in love with it, and either blowing your budget or being

heartbroken over a dress you can’t have. GIVE YOURSELF PLENTY OF TIME

Wedding dresses can take longer than you think to order, so this isn’t a trip you should leave until the last minute. Aim to shop no closer than 9 months away from your wedding day to give yourself plenty of time to shop and get the order in. If you’re in a time

dress shopping with you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be your mum or your maid of honour, either – pick people who you know will be honest, but not blunt to the point of hurting your feelings, and who will respect your tastes and budget.

GATHER YOUR POSSE

AT T H E BOUTIQUE

Bridal designers tend to release new collections twice a year – once in Spring, around March, and once in Autumn, around September. Keep an eye out for sales at these times as boutiques clear space for the new designs on their rails. Forget everything you’ve seen on Say Yes to the Dress! Instead of a 15-person strong entourage, invite just two to three important people to come

WEAR NICE UNDERWEAR

We warn you now: a bridal appointment is no time to be prudish! You’ll be half-

DON’T BE AFRAID OF COLOUR

As well as your favourite silhouettes and styles, keep in mind your venue and wedding season when choosing your dress. Lighter, flowing fabrics without too many layers will work better for Summer, while dresses in heavier materials with more

It’s a common misconception that all wedding dresses are white. In fact, there are plenty of shades of white, off-white, ivory and champagne, as well as pastels like blush, topaz and misty blue, all of which will wear differently on different skin tones.

DO YOUR HAIR, BUT NOT YOUR MAKE-UP

CONSIDER YOUR VENUE AND SEASON

Don’t shy away from anything that’s not pure white because you’re afraid it won’t look ‘bridal’ – we promise you, no-one’s going to miss that you’re the bride on the day!

You might go in to your appointment only wanting to try on certain styles, but try to have an open mind when selecting dresses to

Leave your granny pants or lime green lace thong at home, and instead choose light-coloured underwear that you don’t mind being seen in and that won’t show through the dress. A strapless bra is very handy, too.

THINGS TO REMEMBER DON’T COUNT ON WEIGHT LOSS

ROMANTICA OF DEVON 48 ♥ L OV E O U R W E D D I N G ♥ O C T O B E R 2 0 1 7

YOU MIGHT NOT CRY

Everyone always says that you’ll be able to tell if your dress is ‘the one’, but sometimes it’s not that simple! You might expect to burst into tears the minute you see yourself in the perfect dress, and that both your mother and your bridal consultant will be sobbing in the corner, but a lot of the time this just doesn’t happen. Three signs that you love your dress are: you can’t stop smiling, you keep looking at yourself in the mirror in it, and you don’t want to take it off. If you can’t stop thinking

about it once you’ve left the shop, then it’s the one. ONCE YOU’VE FOUND IT, STOP SHOPPING

When you think you’ve found the perfect gown, then you need to follow this one rule to avoid dress regret: STOP. SHOPPING. If you keep looking in boutiques or at dresses on Instagram, then you’re likely to start worrying about whether you’ve made the right choice. Be secure in the knowledge that you looked beautiful in your choice, and just look forward to when you get to wear it down the aisle!

ELBETH GILLIS

BERTA BRIDAL

We can’t stress this enough: buy your dress in the size you are currently, rather than the size you’re hoping to be on your wedding day. That is exactly what fittings and alterations are for, and it is FAR easier to take a

dress in than it is to let it out. It also means that you won’t be putting undue stress on yourself to lose weight in the lead up to the wedding, which can lead to anxiety and dangerous crash dieting. If you’re determined to lose a large amount of weight before the big day, let your consultant know this, and she can advise you on which size to order.

Bridal beauty Bridal wedding hair & make-up artist, Anna Sorbie, reveals three chic looks to try at home!

SOFT CLASSIC GLAMOUR HAIR STEP 1 Blow-dry with a volume and smoothing product. STEP 2 Separate your hair into small sections. Use a medium heated wand to smooth all your hair and pin into pin curls. Spray with a setting spray and leave to cool. STEP 3 Unpin the hair and brush

through using a large bristle brush to leave a soft bouncy curl. Apply a soft gloss using your fingers. STEP 4 Take two pieces of hair, about an inch deep from the front. Twist and pin them into place, then twine in ‘The Beatrice’ headpiece from Anna Sorbie. Spray with a humidity hairspray.

MAKE-UP

STEP 1: THE BASE Apply your moisturiser, primer and your desired foundation base. Apply a neutral light colour (cream) across the whole eye. If your skin tone is warm, opt for a cream colour with slight pink undertone. If your skin has a natural pink tone, use a flat cream. STEP 2: THE EYES Using a black pencil liner, create a 40’s look with a bold thick eyeliner and a flick. Use a cotton bud to smudge

the line to giving it softness, then go over the edge of the line with a black gel line to give it a strong edge. STEP 3: THE COLOUR Contour the face softly, apply blush to the apple of the cheek and bronze lightly. Set your look with finishing powder then apply dark black mascara. STEP 4: THE LIPS Apply a strong red lip to finish off this romantic 40’s inspired look.

METHOD Put the yogurt, lime juice and half the tikka curry powder in a wide non-reactive bowl (glass, ceramic or plastic), season to taste and mix well. Add the chicken and pepper chunks and toss to coat well. Cover and marinate in the fridge for 6-8 hours or overnight if possible so the flavours can really get into the chicken. Spray a non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium-high heat. Add the onion and stir-fry for 5 minutes, then add the garlic, ginger, chilli and remaining tikka powder and stir-fry for 3 minutes. Stir in the tomato purée, passata, sweetener, stock and cinnamon stick. Bring to the boil then reduce the heat to low and cook gently for 20-25 minutes, stirring often. Preheat your grill to medium-high. Thread the chicken and pepper chunks on to 8 metal skewers and spoon over any marinade left in the dish. Spray lightly with low-calorie cooking spray and grill for about 15 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through, turning once or twice. Remove the sauce from the heat and stir in the fromage frais. Slide the chicken and pepper chunks off the skewers and into the sauce. Garnish with coriander sprigs and serve hot with the lime wedges and rice.

INGREDIENTS 50g blueberries 50g raspberries 3½ level tbsp sweetener granules Low-calorie cooking spray (ideally butter-flavoured) 4 large eggs, separated into 2 mixing bowls 2 level tbsp plain flour 280ml skimmed milk Finely grated zest of 2 small unwaxed lemons and juice 1½ ½ level of tsp icing sugar, to dust METHOD Whizz the berries in a food processor with 1 level tbsp sweetener. Press through a fine sieve into a bowl, discarding the seeds left in the sieve, and pour the sauce into a small jug. Chill until you are ready to serve. Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan 180°C/gas 6. Lightly spray 4 x 350ml individual soufflé

dishes or ovenproof ramekins with a little low-calorie cooking spray and dust each one with a pinch of sweetener. Arrange them in a small, deep roasting tin. Add the remaining sweetener to the egg yolks in a heatproof bowl and whisk until thick and pale. Whisk in the flour. Bring the milk just to the boil in a small non-stick saucepan over a medium heat, then slowly whisk it into the egg yolks. Return the mixture to a clean pan and cook over a medium heat, whisking all the time, until you have a smooth, thick custard. Remove from the heat and beat in the lemon zest and lemon juice. Pour into a clean mixing bowl. Whisk the egg whites until they form soft peaks then gently fold them into the custard with a large metal spoon. Divide the mixture between the soufflé dishes or ramekins and pour enough boiling water into the roasting tin to come halfway up the sides of the dishes or ramekins. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until puffed up and very slightly golden on top. Carefully put the soufflé dishes or ramekins on to plates and dust the tops with icing sugar. Take them to the table and ask your guests to make a small slit in the top of their soufflé, pour in some sauce and dig in!

LOVE OUR WEDDING

Helen & Ollie A S T U N N I N G V I N TA G E ST YLE WEDDING

Inspired by Downton Abbey, this wedding was vintage perfection. Bride Helen shares the details How did Ollie propose? “Christmas Day 2015. We’d gone home to my parents’ house and had donned our Christmas jumpers before taking the family dog out for a walk. He kneeled/ squatted down in the slightly damp road next to the fields overlooking my village and very simply asked me to marry him (he said the nerves got the better of him, so 110 ♥ L OV E O U R W E D D I N G ♥ O C T O B E R 2 0 1 7

couldn’t manage anything more!). On the return home, we surprised all my family with the wonderful news!” What dress did you wear? “I wore a beautiful Justin Alexander dress. It was out of my comfort zone and I wasn’t sure about it the first time I tried it on, but

once it went back on the hanger and I was trying other dresses, I just couldn’t take my eyes off it and it quickly became the one. I bought it from George James Bridal in Bedford. It is the most beautiful boutique with a collection of divine dresses. Nicola goes the extra mile and gave me a thank you

SOMETHING OLD

GILLIAN MILLION

• Vintage jewellery works perfectly for this part of the tradition. Investigate the family jewellery boxes to see if there’s anything that would work with your bridal look – it also means you can add sentimental value to your wedding accessories. • Why not add an heirloom brooch to your bouquet? You could even make your bouquet entirely with vintage brooches for added sparkle! • Another sentimental idea is to wear an old family photo in a locket necklace, or attach it to your bouquet. • Wear a hand-me-down veil, or repurpose a part of your mother or grandmother’s wedding dress to attach to your own. • Buy a vintage wedding ring so that you receive your something old as part of your ceremony.

SOMETHING NEW

THE WEDDING OF MY DREAMS

IKONWORKS PHOTOGRAPHY

• This is the easiest part of the tradition to fulfil, as your dress will be new! However, there are plenty of other sweet ideas, too. • If your fiancé bought you wedding jewellery as a gift for the morning, wear it as your ‘something new’. • Plenty of brides purchase a new wedding perfume for the big day, and the scent will always remind you of happy memories when you wear it. • Treat yourself to a new pair of shoes for the wedding – if you choose a style that you love, you can wear them for your first anniversary meal, too. • You’re getting a new name on your wedding day, so why not have them embroidered somewhere on your dress? Do it in blue thread for a bonus ‘something blue’!

MADISON JAMES

• This tradition can often tie in with your ‘something old’, as it’s the perfect way to borrow an heirloom from a family member. Borrowed jewellery or veils can easily double up. • Borrow a handkerchief from your dad to wipe any happy tears away on the day – it’ll easily tuck into your a dress or a bridal bag. • If you have friends who recently married, borrow something from them like a garter or a bag. Not only does it fulfil the tradition, but it saves you money, too! • Beauty works, too – borrow a nailpolish, hair pin or perfume for your big day for a subtle nod to the tradition. • Want to jazz up your dress? You can incorporate something borrowed by using the belt from another dress. Perhaps your mother’s, maid of honour’s or a friend’s?

SHROPSHIRE PETALS

egardless of how you choose to tie the knot, weddings are full of tradition and always will be. From the rings you exchange on the day to the speeches and the cutting of your cake – enjoy planning your wedding around tradition and don’t forget to hire a great photographer to capture those traditional moments. This month, we’re sharing ideas on how to keep wedding traditions alive at your wedding venue.

SOMETHING BLUE

• Sapphires work wonderfully for this trend. Incorporate it into your wedding jewellery (even your ring if it’s a favourite stone of yours), or something subtle like a hair pin. • If you’d rather not have any blue on show but still want to honour the tradition, garters work wonderfully for this purpose. • Plenty of brides are opting for blue shoes for their wedding day. Whether you choose sky blue, rich navy or simply ivory with a blue sole, we think this is a thoroughly modern way to wear blue. • If you’re feeling daring, a blue manicure can look fabulous in photos! Keep it pale or just on your ring finger for a more subtle touch. • Wrap a blue ribbon around your bouquet, or even add some blue blooms in if it matches your colour scheme!

Family photos Take advantage of the grounds surrounding your wedding venue. Aside from exquisite and uber romantic couple shots, you’ll more than likely want to capture a shot with both sets of parents. Choose a wonderful spot with your wedding venue as the backdrop to take this traditional and memorable photograph. Tossing your bouquet Your single girlfriends will love getting involved in this special tradition of tossing your bouquet. Choose to stand at the top of a staircase (inside or out depending on your wedding venue – and the weather of course) and make sure that all of your single friends are at the ready. Throwing confetti Get your guests involved in a fun and very traditional wedding confetti shot. Check with your wedding venue that throwing confetti is permitted and where it might be best to hold this special moment. Something blue wedding theme Theme your wedding with a something blue theme; from your bridal bouquet to the sashes on your ceremony chairs or the décor on your reception tables. Browse through inspiration galleries online to source ideas and don’t forget to collect something old, something new and something borrowed before your big day. Bijou Wedding Venues have a wealth of experience when it comes to throwing amazing weddings at their exclusive use venues, all located within 30-90 minutes of London. REBEL CIRCUS

Wedding planning is lots of fun, but can also be tricky at times! Real brides reveal the biggest woes they’ve faced... “Shortly after our engagement, one of my best friends told me she was pregnant. Although really happy for her, I knew that she would have a four

REAL BRIDES CONFESS month old by the time the wedding came around, so I told her straight away that we weren’t having children at the wedding. Because the baby wasn’t here yet, she didn’t seem too bothered. Everything was paid for, the table plan and place names were done, and then about two weeks before the wedding, she asked me if she could bring her baby. I had been so clear the whole way through every time we met up that she couldn’t bring the baby, and it only came up as a problem then! I explained that I couldn’t allow it because I had already told friends and family they couldn’t

bring theirs (we had lots of children/babies around the time within the family, but most adults were pleased

I had been so clear all the way through that she couldn’t bring her baby for the night off!) so we couldn’t make this rule just for her. We had a bit of an argument about it, and a week before the wedding she told us she wasn’t coming, at all!” Jade

“The RSVPs caused some serious arguments in my family. We sent an invitation to some of my fiancé’s relatives, which included my fiancé’s grandma, Sarah, but when we received the RSVP back, the name ‘Sarah’ was crossed out and replaced with ‘Sam’. They’d even written in the song request section of the card, ‘It will be Sam in place of Sarah’. It turned out that Sam was the new boyfriend of my fiancé’s cousin, who no-one had ever met before. My groom was understandably upset, not only because his only grandma was declining to come, but also that no-one

agreed date arrived and she ignored all my emails and phone calls for two weeks, before finally answering the phone to tell me the dresses had been lost in the post, and the replacements wouldn’t arrive until two weeks before my wedding, meaning there wasn’t enough time to get the girls in for alterations. We tried to cancel the order but she refused. She even sent revised terms and conditions that I hadn’t ever signed with a completely new paragraph in it about bridesmaid dress dates not being guaranteed. We later found out that her glowing online reviews were all from herself or friends. In the end we found some lovely dresses that were nicer and cheaper so it all worked out, thank goodness.” Josie

from the family had even bothered to ask him if they could invite this stranger. Things only got worse when my fiancé’s mother rang Sarah to ask her why she wasn’t attending the wedding, and she said she had never even seen the invitation!” Kate “For me, the bridesmaid dresses were the most stressful part of planning. I took my four bridesmaids to a recommended bridal shop to give them a proper experience – I wanted them to feel pretty and to have an experienced shop deal with all sizing and alterations issues. We placed the order with eight months to go before the

wedding. A month later she asked all the girls to come back in to confirm what size we wanted her to order, which was worrying as she had personally taken measurements in

I didn’t say anything in the shop, but fell into a fit of tears at home December. I confirmed that the dresses would still arrive two months before the wedding as we needed to have firm dates due to my bridesmaids being from all round the country. The

“My silly hindsight bridezilla moment was over my wedding nails. I had kept really calm throughout the whole wedding planning procedure. Five days before the wedding, I had my wedding manicure done and I hated the colour! Being British, I didn’t say anything in the shop, but made it home before collapsing into a fit of tears over them, much to the complete bafflement of my husband-to-be. With the collective help of him and my bridesmaids over some quite frankly ridiculous texts, I got my act together and got them repainted, but it does make me laugh now to think that after all the planning, it was the manicure that got me the most stressed.” Melanie

“When I got engaged two years ago, I asked my sister to be a bridesmaid and she agreed. My wedding is now four weeks away, and last week, she decided she didn’t like the bridesmaid dresses or shoes that my future husband and I had already paid for. She told me she wanted to wear something entirely different

She asked if I was going to have a spray tan so I’d ‘look good in the photos’ and I said no because it’s so close to the wedding – she told me she didn’t want to be a bridesmaid in that case! I wasn’t entirely surprised, as she’s been looking for reasons to drop out for months, but now she’s complaining to family members that I removed her from the wedding text group and told her she’s not sitting at the top table and that I won’t pay for her hair and make-up!” Sarah “Being a rather pale person in general, I religiously went to sun beds three times a week for three months before my wedding. The week before the wedding I was feeling confident, and felt happy with my level of pre-wedding glow. This was before my neighbour stopped me to ask if I was going to have a spray tan ‘so I looked good in the pictures’. Why do people think it’s okay to say these things to brides!?” Hannah

Weddings Abroad Fancy trading in Blighty for a bit of sunshine or culture overseas? Try these destinations... MEXICO The Riviera Maya in Mexico is a popular wedding destination for Americans, thanks to the delicious food, gorgeous scenery and fascinating culture, but now UK brides are wising up to this stunning area of Mexico, too! The luxury all-inclusive resorts surrounding Cancun and Tulum are the perfect setting for a glamorous beach wedding, and in your downtime, guests can visit ancient Mayan pyramids, swim in picture-perfect cenotes and enjoy plenty of local tequilas. Need to knows • Only civil ceremonies are legally binding • You’ll need between two and four witnesses • You’ll need blood tests done in Mexico prior to the wedding • Weddings on Sundays are not permitted

SRI LANKA For a true paradise island wedding, head off the beaten path and choose lush and leafy Sri Lanka for your celebration. The rich culture of this beautiful country can add a real difference to your destination wedding; think riding into your ceremony on an elephant, being accompanied by drummers and dancers, and wearing traditional Sri Lankan wedding attire. Plus, it’s a great base for island-hopping over to the Maldives for a honeymoon! Need to knows • You’ll need to stay in Sri Lanka for at least four days prior to the wedding

NEW YORK Not all destination weddings are on the beach! The Big Apple is a fantastic location for couples wanting a city wedding abroad, as there are so many fabulous catering and venue options available, not to mention a huge range of tourist attractions. From the elegant gardens in Central Park to cool warehouses in Brooklyn or chic Manhattan restaurants with city views, you can get married practically anywhere in the city – and that’s before you even factor in the amazing food and drink options available. Need to knows • You’ll need to stay in New York for at least 24 hours prior to the wedding • A wedding license costs $35 and will be valid for 60 days

LAS VEGAS No destination wedding guide is complete without mentioning Las Vegas, as the ‘wedding capital’ is famous for its high-profile elopements. Forget sneaking off for a drive-through ceremony though – you can just as easily have a glamorous celebration with friends and family in Sin City. As well as the many iconic chapels, there are some incredible venues to choose from, including the gardens at Caesars Palace, on a gondola at The Venetian, and even in front of the Las Vegas sign! With all the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip and the Grand Canyon just a helicopter ride away, this is one thrilling wedding destination. Need to knows • Las Vegas has no minimum residency requirement before the wedding

ITALY For a dream destination that’s closer to home, Italy ticks all the boxes. There’s no end to beautiful places to tie the knot in, with breathtaking churches and cathedrals for religious ceremonies and vineyards, castles and villas for civil ceremonies. Classic wedding destinations include Lakes Garda and Como, the canals of Venice and the coastal towns of Sorrento, Positano or Ravello. Need to knows • Both civil and Catholic ceremonies are legally binding in Italy, but civil ceremonies can only take place at the town hall or buildings managed by the town hall. • There must be an interpreter at your wedding, regardless of whether or not you speak Italian • For Catholic ceremonies, neither the bride nor groom can be previously divorced • You will need at least two witnesses

GREECE Another gorgeous European option is Greece and its islands. Rhodes, Crete and Santorini are popular picks for destination weddings, as are the islands of Corfu and Kefalonia, all thanks to their incredible landscapes, history-steeped buildings and sandy beaches. The short-haul flights are also appealing for couples wanting to bring a large wedding party out to celebrate with them! Its celeb contingent means that you’ll find plenty of high-end wedding planners and suppliers, and wedding venues range from bohemian beachfront villas to party venues and restaurants. The flights are less than three hours from London too, making it a perfect short-haul option. Need to knows • Spain requires the bride and groom to be Spanish residents for two years before marrying, meaning it’s likely that you will only receive a wedding blessing in Ibiza • It is possible to arrange a Catholic ceremony if you are not a resident, but you must allow six months for paperwork

CROATIA Croatia is becoming more and more popular for destination weddings, thanks to its picturesque islands, crystal-clear waters and impressive architecture. The capital Dubrovnik is famous for being a filming location for Game of Thrones, and is the perfect balance between a city and beach wedding. You can also marry on tiny private islands, in candle-lit cave restaurants, or in gorgeously green nature reserves. Trust us when we say that this is the hottest new wedding destination around! Need to knows • Only civil ceremonies are legally binding • Croatia has no minimum residency requirement before the wedding • If one or both of you does not speak Croatian, then there must be a court-appointed translator present

SAINT LUCIA For an island wedding, you can’t go wrong with the Caribbean, and Saint Lucia is one of the best destination wedding options around. Combining lush rainforests with golden sandy beaches, Saint Lucia boasts some incredible luxury hotels that work well for both intimate and large destination weddings, as well as more boho boutique venues. Once you’ve tied the knot, you can enjoy rainforest hikes up the Piton peaks, snorkelling amongst coral reefs and the relaxed island nightlife in Rodney Bay. Need to knows • You must be resident in Saint Lucia for 2 days before you can apply for a marriage license, which then takes 2 days to process
