Welcome to the new issue of Love Our Wedding! This month we’ve been looking at the latest trends in bridal, from the newest dress collections through to seasonal decor ideas.

CHUNKY TOMATO AND ORZO SOUP (VEGAN)

Ready in 25 minutes

INGREDIENTS

1 large onion, roughly chopped

2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced ½ tsp dried chilli flakes

SERVES 4

1 tsp dried oregano 1 tsp dried basil

400g can chopped tomatoes

400g can cherry tomatoes in juice (or another can of chopped tomatoes)

1 litre boiling vegetable stock, suitable for vegans, plus extra if needed

160g dried orzo (or other small pasta shapes) a handful of torn fresh basil leaves, to serve

METHOD

Put the onion, garlic, chilli, oregano and dried basil in a large saucepan and turn the heat to medium. Add all of the canned tomatoes and the stock and cook for 10 minutes.

Blitz briefly with a stick blender, keeping some nice chunky bits (or blitz half of it in a food processor and return to the pan).

Add the orzo, cover and cook for a further 10 minutes. If you like your soup a bit wetter, add some more boiling stock or 100200ml water. Season to taste, ladle into bowls and scatter over the fresh basil to serve.

Make it in a soupmaker

Halve the ingredients to serve 2

Put all the ingredients in your soupmaker except the orzo and fresh basil. Press blend a few times, then cook on the chunky setting, adding the orzo with 10 minutes to go. Season to taste and scatter over the fresh basil to serve.

TROPICAL RUM JELLY TRIFLES (VEGAN)

Ready in 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

2 x 330ml cans diet lemonade

1 tsp agar-agar powder

SERVES 4

3 tbsp no-added-sugar blackcurrant

cordial

250g strawberries, hulled and sliced

100g prepared watermelon, diced

1 tbsp finely chopped fresh mint, plus sprigs to serve

Zest of ½ unwaxed lime or lemon

2 ripe kiwi fruits, peeled and diced

100g prepared fresh mango, diced

A drop of rum flavouring

100g plain unsweetened soya yogurt with added calcium

METHOD

Pour 1 can of lemonade into a saucepan over a medium heat and add the agaragar, stirring until it dissolves. Bring to the boil and simmer for 3 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Remove from the heat and cool slightly. Pour the remaining lemonade and the blackcurrant cordial into a large jug. Carefully pour the hot lemonade into the jug and stir to combine. Divide the strawberries between 4 large glasses and pour in the lemonade mixture.

Chill for 4 hours or overnight, until set. When you’re ready to eat, mix the

watermelon, mint, lime or lemon zest, kiwi, mango and rum flavuorings in a large bowl. Divide the yogurt between the glasses and top with the fruit and mint sprigs to serve.

Tip: Agar-agar is a vegan alternative to gelatine that you’ll find on the baking aisle in larger supermarkets. You can use another gelatine alternative instead, such as vege-gel or arrowroot, though you might need to experiment with amounts.

COURGETTE LASAGNE (VEGAN)

Ready in 1 hour 20 minutes

INGREDIENTS

Low-calorie cooking spray

1 large onion, chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

6 medium courgettes, diced

4 celery sticks, diced

2 large carrots, diced

1 bay leaf

SERVES 4

4 level tbsp unsweetened almond drink

16 dried lasagne sheets

50g dairy-free hard cheese (we used Koko Deliciously Mellow Dairy Free Alternative)

Chopped fresh parsley, to serve

METHOD

Preheat your oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Spray a large non-stick frying pan with low-calorie cooking spray and place over a medium heat (use a pan you can put a lid over). Add the onion, garlic, courgettes, celery, carrots and bay leaf, then cover and cook for 15 minutes or until tender.

Pop one-third of the cooked vegetables into a food processor, discarding the bay leaf. Add the almond drink and blitz until smooth. Working in batches, soften the lasagne sheets in a

saucepan of boiling water over a high heat for 2 minutes, then drain well.

Spray an ovenproof dish with lowcalorie cooking spray and line with 4 lasagne sheets, cutting them to fit any awkward spaces. Add one-quarter of the puréed veg in an even layer, then a layer using one-quarter of the diced vegetables. Carry on like this until you have 4 layers each of lasagne sheets, purée and veg, then evenly sprinkle the dairy-free cheese on top and bake for 30 minutes or until it’s bubbling and the lasagne sheets are tender.

A GORGEOUS WEDDING IN GREECE

How did he propose?

David made my birthday on April 18th 2021 even more special by surprising me with a proposal. Our families were present to share in the joyous moment. As the anticipation built up, David took a pause, went down on one knee, and presented me with the most precious gift of all: a proposal of a lifetime. Overwhelmed with emotions, I eagerly accepted, knowing that our love story was about to embark on an incredible new chapter.

What dress did you wear and where did you buy it?

On our wedding day, I felt like a princess in my exquisite Pronovias dress called Skye, which I found at Xsasa Bruidsmode in Haren. To complete my bridal look, I adorned myself with accessories from the same boutique, including a delicate veil and stunning jewellery. As for my shoes, I opted for a stylish pair from ASOS. David looked dashing in a sleek suit from Suit Supply, perfectly tailored.

How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle?

When I saw David waiting for me at the end of the aisle, a wave of overwhelming emotion washed over me, and my heart filled with joy. It was a surreal moment, knowing that we were about to embark on this incredible journey together. The love and support from our family and

friends surrounding us made it even more meaningful. Our wedding day was a testament to our love, a day filled with laughter, tears, and countless cherished memories that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Who were your bridesmaids and where

were their dresses from?

My sisters, who held a special place in my heart, stood by my side as my bridesmaids, adding an extra touch of love and support to the day. They looked absolutely stunning in their elegant dresses from H&M, which perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic of the wedding. Seeing them all dolled up, sharing in my joy, filled my heart with gratitude and happiness. Their presence made the day even more meaningful, reminding me of the strong bond we share as sisters, and creating beautiful memories that will forever be cherished.

What was your wedding theme?

My wedding theme was Greek bohemian, and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. With the help of my talented wedding planner, who brought my vision to life, every detail reflected the essence of this unique theme. I shared a plethora of inspirational pictures, and they flawlessly incorporated elements, which I wanted. The

What was the highlight of your day?

The highlight of my day was undoubtedly the moment when we exchanged our vows and said “yes” to each other. With the breathtaking view as our backdrop and the perfect weather gracing us, it was a dream come true. The venue decor exceeded my expectations, encompassing every detail I had envisioned. The intimacy of having only our closest friends and family present added an extra layer of warmth and love to the occasion. What was your best buy?

My best buy was undoubtedly my wedding dress, which I absolutely adored! It was a stunning embodiment of my personal style and made me feel like a true bride. Every time I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I couldn’t help but feel an overwhelming sense of beauty and

What’s your saving tip?

My best saving tip is to keep the guest list small and intimate. By doing so, you can avoid unnecessary expenses and instead prioritise quality time with each other. With a smaller guest count, you can truly engage and connect with your loved ones, creating meaningful memories that will last a lifetime. By focusing on each other, you can fully embrace the significance of the day and cherish the moments shared.

PERFECTION IN THE USA

How did he propose?

Many of Mckane and I’s first couple of dates took place on a local lake. We both grew up wakesurfing with our families and so when we started dating, the lake was a perfect place to spend time to get to know each other. In July of 2021, McKane took me out on his parents’ boat during sunset. He pulled into a cove, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him. On a nearby dock, his brother was there to take pictures of the proposal. We spent the rest of the night celebrating with family and friends!

What dress did you wear and where did you buy it?

I wanted my dress to be dramatic, romantic, and edgy. I found my dream two-piece dress, with detachable sleeves, on Instagram from the boutique; Cinq Bridal. Macye, the designer, had about 5 wedding dress styles at the time and was renting a showroom in LA. I immediately fell in love with the gown and knew I had to go to LA to see it in person. I went to LA twice… once to try it on and once to say yes to the dress and get fitted! My bridal vision was completed when I added a custom cathedral length veil.

What accessories did you wear?

Since my dress was very detailed with lace, long sleeves, and pearl embellishments on the top, I knew I didn’t want to over accessorise. The one piece of jewellery that was very important to me were the earrings. I wanted them to have irregular shaped pearls to match my dress. I ended up wearing a dangly pair of earrings with seven pearls and a gold clasp from Rellery. The shoes were from Bella Belle.

What did the groom wear?

My husband, McKane, works in the outdoor apparel

industry and with the help of some of his manufacturers, he designed a custom suit for our wedding! It was stone wash wool with several personal details. McKane has started a small brand of his own where all of his inspiration and ideas live called Mack’s Room. His suit included multiple Mack’s Room branded elements like the jacket liner, woven labels, and embroideries. The suit also featured a custom wedding ring pocket, and our dating anniversary, July 10th, on the interior of the jacket.

How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle?

Words just cannot really describe the emotions that I was feeling when I saw McKane standing at the end of the aisle. McKane and I had been dating for almost eight years when we got married. I was more than ready to be his wife. When I saw him, the tears immediately began and I couldn’t help but giggle. I was so excited and giddy, but also feeling so relieved to finally be starting this next chapter of our life. It was so surreal and sentimental because it felt like we had been waiting our whole lives for this moment!

Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from?

My bridesmaids were a group of girls that were so important and encouraging to me. I had nine bridesmaids and one maid of honour. My bridesmaids were made up of some of my friends from high-school, college, and then my husband’s sister. My maid of honour was my little sister, Isabelle. The dresses that my wedding party wore were all the same colour and style. Their dresses were from JJ’s House and the style was the A-line V-neck Asymmetrical Chiffon Bridesmaid Dress With Cascading Ruffles in lilac.

What was your wedding theme?

The intention behind our wedding was for people to feel like they were stepping into a magical fairytale garden full of butterflies and cascading florals. I gathered so much inspiration from the Regency Period, garden parties, and the show Bridgerton. This vision would not have come to life without the amazing support from my parents and my wedding planner, Katie McIntire, from Amanda Reed Weddings. The colours were lilac, sage green, and a light coral/orange. To really enhance the romantic feeling, we had a harpist, a live butterfly release, candelabras, and a breathtaking hanging floral installation created by Samantha’s Garden.

What was the highlight of your day?

The highlight of the day had to be the dance party after the reception dinner. The dance party took place up closer to the house on a checkered light-up floor that covered the pool. There were signature cocktails, a “kissing booth” to take pictures in, a cotton candy machine, and best of all the most amazing DJ ever… who also happened to be my dad! My dad brought back his high school and college djing skills to help turn our whimsical ceremony into a dance party, complete with his very own DJ equipment like a smoke machine, light bar, and turntables.

What was your best buy?

One of the best purchases for our wedding day was the cake! It was delicious and the guests loved it! There were no pieces left by the end of the night. Our cake was from a local bakery called Shelby Lynn’s Cake Shoppe. The cake was vanilla with brown-butter pineapple filling. It was the perfect mix of sugary sweet with a deep caramelised flavour. Another memorable purchase was the live butterflies. Releasing them was such an intimate and beautiful moment. I will never forget how they stayed fluttering around the floral arch during the ceremony!

What’s your saving tip?

The best piece of advice that was passed down to me was to pick your top three things that you are most excited about and spend the money on those. The rest of the details outside of your top three, can be areas where you pick not the most expensive option to save some money. The areas that I picked as my top three were my florals, my wedding dress, and then the guest list. I wanted to make sure that all my friends and family were invited to celebrate with McKane and I!

AN AMAZING AMSTERDAM WEDDING

How did he propose?

He organised a day trip to Utrecht and he proposed at the Kasteel de Haar. As I am his princess I deserved a castle! The magical moment left me in tears of joy, and we celebrated with a romantic dinner at a Michelin star restaurant, savouring every exquisite bite together. It was a proposal straight out of a fairytale, filled with love and thoughtfulness, making it a cherished memory that marks the beginning of our journey towards a lifetime of happiness together.

What dress did you wear and where did you buy it?

I wore a stunning mermaid dress with long sleeves, opting for an elegant and timeless look without lace. The dress was an exquisite find from Miramode; a wedding dress boutique in Italy. From the moment I laid eyes on it, I knew it was the one. The boutique’s selection and attention to detail made the shopping experience truly special. Wearing that dress on my wedding day made me feel confident and beautiful, and it perfectly reflected my personal style. It was a dream come true finding the perfect dress in such a wonderful boutique.

What accessories did you wear?

I adorned myself with exquisite accessories on my special day. The elegant silver earrings I wore were from Franky Amsterdam, adding a touch of sparkle and sophistication to my bridal look. What did the groom wear?

The groom looked dashing in a stylish light blue suit from Suitsupply, complete with a matching tie and a waistcoat. The suit perfectly accentuated his features and complemented the overall colour scheme of our wedding. The attention to detail, quality craftsmanship, and modern design of Suitsupply made it the perfect choice for his attire. With his impeccable sense of style, he exuded confidence and charm.

How did you feel when you saw him up the aisle?

I was really nervous, I couldn’t move much in my outfit as I didn’t want to ruin my hair, make up and the veil. I had to wait for a while before entering in the room, where everybody was waiting for me. When I saw Luca I was released and I think I walked quite fast to get to him.

Who were your bridesmaids and where were their dresses from?

Instead of having bridesmaids, I opted for a unique approach. I had two incredible maid of honours by my side on my special day. One was my best friend, who resides in London but hails from Italy, and the other was my beloved aunt from Italy. Their love and support meant the world to me. Similarly, my husband also had two maid of honours by his side, creating a harmonious balance in our bridal party. This unconventional choice allowed us to honour the special individuals in our lives and create

an even more meaningful and personal connection on our wedding day.

What was your wedding theme?

We choose a mix of Italian and Dutch. As we are Italian we picked an Italian food menu, wines and some games that we typically do in Italy during weddings, but the location was traditional Dutch. The table seating were paints of Van Gogh with small little Dutch houses as table sign.

What was the highlight of your day?

The most significant moment of the day was the magical and intimate wedding, where my beloved and I exchanged our marriage vows. The ceremony was filled with joy and happiness, and all of our guests were thoroughly entertained throughout the day. It was a special time that will forever remain in our hearts, creating unforgettable memories.

What was your best buy?

My best buy for the wedding was undoubtedly the exquisite flower arrangements, particularly the stunning composition of white orchids. The flowers added an elegant and ethereal touch to the overall decor, creating a

captivating ambiance. I was overjoyed with how the florist meticulously arranged the orchids, bringing my vision to life. What’s your saving tip?

We open a loan with the bank for house renovationwedding - and the car. In addition, we work in hospitality industry so for us was easier to organise the wedding as we have many contacts.

Who better to give saving advice than people who have been there and done that?! Here real couples provide their top tips...

My first step would be deciding on what you want for your day. What are the 3 most important things that you want to remember and you want your guests to remember? Once you have that get your quotes and make those 3 your biggest budgets. Weddings cost a good lump sum and certainly can be a big stretch for

some, so my tip would be to focus on one or two things per month that you want to cover, so that you are paying deposits over various months and not all at once. The last month is where it really hits, as you must often pay the remaining amounts, so ensure that you are putting money away each month for each vendor.

My saving tip is to not get pulled in to ‘needing’ things that won’t add to your day. We didn’t have baskets of flip flops or essentials in the bathrooms, we didn’t have a photo booth or lots of other things that we’ve seen at other weddings, which are lovely, but we honestly didn’t miss them. We stuck with what was important to us and

let go of anything that would have been for someone else. Everyone had a great day and we kept people fed, which I think was a more important thing to spend our money on.

Research, research, research! Always look at more than one supplier and find the best value for what you are getting.

I think being organised is key! Once initial deposits are paid you usually have until quite near your wedding date before full payment is due. I think your wedding date is

something to put a lot of thought into to ensure you give yourself plenty time to save.

Maybe not the best to give saving tips as we did go over budget slightly in the end. I would say that personally for us, areas I would NOT be tight on are photography. I spent hours researching the right photographer for us, and it makes a world of difference on the day having someone who makes you feel calm, and that can provide you with quality photos after. You won’t regret it. I also think if you have a budget in mind then explain this to

your vendor. We were very kindly gifted so many free flowers on our wedding day, I think a combination of building a rapport but also explaining the budget we had. Also alcohol, we provided the champagne for toasting and wine at dinner, but other than this our guests purchased their own drinks. I think a free bar can lead to wastage and guests taking advantage. We found this a good place to not splash out.

Start buying things early! If you know your theme, get things as early as possible to spread the cost and avoid shelling out loads just before the wedding.

Don’t go overboard with it, and plan what you really need so you don’t end up with loads of bits unused.

If choosing a sweet stand or buffet cart, buy the jars yourself like we did, for just £15 on Etsy. We then purchased all of our favourite sweets and treats to fill them over the coming

weeks in the lead up to the day. It saved us around £100 by doing it this way.

We had three aims when we were finding a venue,

1. As much accommodation as possible to keep our friends with us a long as we could;

2. No curfew so we could party with our friends as long as possible, and;

3. No corkage, so we could bring as much prosecco as best man Tom could find in a van. This last one was a great saver! Turns out its over 300 bottles, and it all went.

Be realistic and allow yourself time to save. For us, we knew we wanted a big wedding, which comes with a big price tag, meaning we booked a wedding date with 18 months grace in which to save. This time allowed us to enjoy the engagement chapter of our relationship before jumping into married life. We looked at our finances and how much was

realistic for us to put aside each month. I would also say, when you have done a first draft of your budget, double it. It sounds bonkers now, but weddings are expensive. Keeping track of your spend as you compile quotes and work through your planning will also help in the long run too and it will save spending running away with you.
