AAvon continues to be a place where individuals and families want to live, given our great neighborhoods, diversified housing, high-performing schools and outstanding safety forces.

Welcome to Avon!

We have an open, business-friendly environment drawing large-scale businesses, midsize manufacturing, popular national chains and a host of small businesses, many owned by residents. You can easily shop for groceries, clothing or specialty items; do your banking; eat at casual or fine dining restaurants; and obtain services from a doctor, hairstylist/ barber, florist or home improvement company. There is no need to leave the city of Avon for all of these services.

The City of Avon is working hard to bring its residents all that they desire in their hometown. Please do not hesitate to contact us at City Hall if we can help you in any way. We are here to assist you.

It is an honor for me to serve the residents as Mayor of Avon.

town that once was known for its farmland and vineyards, Avon is a growing community that balances parks and recreational areas with modern conveniences, Mayor Bryan Jensen said. “We’re very fortunate to have so many amenities here, from plentiful shopping to fun activities for everybody from young children to seniors,” he said. “Avon has convenient shopping like Meijer and Heinen’s supermarkets, and stores like Costco and Target, plus a lot of small, family-owned businesses that continue to contribute to the city’s small-town charm. We have virtually everything you need right here in town, so you never have to leave if you don’t want to. But if you want to go to the big city, Downtown Cleveland is conveniently just 20 miles away.”

spaces, which offer residents a tranquil respite into nature. “The city recently bought two more pieces of property that we’re preserving for parks, including one that we’re planning to build into an arboretum,” Jensen said. “That’s 30-some acres of property along the French Creek that is kind of unique to Avon. The city is mostly flat and this is an area where you can walk down into a little bit of the French Creek valley and get a chance to get away from city life. It’s a peaceful, quiet area with a lot of wildlife.” The city plans to start to add walking paths by summer, the mayor said.

Jensen said the city is also in the process of acquiring another 30-acre wooded property between Stony Ridge and Case Roads near the Camelot Estates subdivision and Veterans Memorial Park. The property is expected to include walking trails.

Meanwhile, the Miller Nature Preserve,

Lake Erie Crushers stadium, at the I-90/Route 611 interchange, offers additional local recreation. The stadium is the home of the independent Frontier League Lake Erie Crushers minor league baseball team. Just north of the stadium, the French Creek Family YMCA offers a variety of programs.

children. In the fall of 2022, a $9 million renovation project doubled the size and increased the offerings at the Avon Branch of the Lorain Public Library System. The expansion, which included a 16,000-square-foot addition that featured a reading garden, a drive-up window, expanded meeting rooms, technology upgrades and a dedicated space for children and youth programming. These complement other recent developments at or near the library, such as Storybook Trail and Every Child’s Playground, an inclusive project that provides access to children and adults of all abilities, including wheelchair restricted people.

Commercial development also is continuing to expand as well

for a Dick’s Sporting Goods store on Chester Road as an example. Topgolf and Cooper Hawk Winery and Restaurant are two other projects that are expected to open soon in that area, he said.

“A lot of things are happening on Chester Road near the Bendix [Commercial Vehicle Systems] headquarters,” he said.

Jensen said the opening of the Bendix facility has provided a major benefit to the city. “The one thing we counted on was that Bendix would be a partner within not only our community but to surrounding communities in terms of helping people in need and doing work in the community

So what is Topgolf? It's a sports entertainment complex that features an inclusive, high-tech golf game that everyone can enjoy.

The Avon location will be built on Chester Road near Planet Fitness and will feature a two-story, 31,858-squarefoot facility with 60 driving range bays, a restaurant, and a bar. and they certainly have done that,” he said. “They also do a great job on education projects, particularly with a focus on engineering. They reach out to schools in Avon and the outlying areas to try to get kids involved in the engineering part of what they do.”

Jensen noted that health care is also prominent in Avon. “Residents of Avon and surrounding communities have convenient access to leading health care providers, including a Mercy Health

Primary and Specialty Care office as well as several University Hospitals affiliated practices, such as UH Avon Health Center, which houses the UH Seidman Cancer Center, and UH Avon Rehabilitation Hospital,” he said. “Cleveland Clinic, with the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital and the Richard E. Jacobs Health Center, is among our largest employers. Our healthcare facilities are a big factor for people moving here.”

Avon Branches Out with Trees

The Avon Tree Commission, consisting of seven members and a certified arborist, studies, advises, and encourages the adoption and then implementation of a comprehensive plan for the proper planting of new and replacement trees, and maintaining the health of existing trees in the urban forest. The Tree Commission also provides resource materials and information pertaining to proper tree selection and care, including a list on their website of recommended and discouraged trees for the area.

In 2023, the City of Avon was designated as a Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation. Avon City Council passed legislation forming the Tree Commission and supporting its initiative to apply for Tree City USA certification.

If you are planning on planting at your home or business and have questions, contact the Tree Commission at TreeCommission@ cityofavon.com, or visit them online at www.cityofavon.com/764/Tree-Commission.

Avon Memorial Tree Program

Residents are invited to purchase a tree in memory of a loved one, to dedicate to a friend or family member, or to commemorate a special event as part of the City of Avon Memorial Tree Program. Neighbors and guests of Avon City Parks share in that remembrance and beauty, which is preserved for present and future generations.

Trees can be planted in Every Child’s Playground, Northgate Park, Schwartz Park, and the Veterans Memorial.

Avon’s Official Tree

Did you know the City of Avon has an official tree? After reviewing several varieties, the Avon Tree Commission agreed that the Hearts of Gold Redbud tree was the most appropriate. The tree has purple flowers in the spring, with leaves that turn from green to gold, which is perfect for representing Avon’s colors.

The cost is $395 and includes planting, staking, mulch, and care. It also includes an engraved paver. Plantings take place in the spring and fall, and each tree is guaranteed for one year. For more information on this program please contact Susan Beres, Parks & Recreation Department at 440-937-4461, or scan the QR code to view the Memorial Tree form.

Large, heart-shaped leaves are burnresistant even in the summer sun. The tree grows to about 20 feet tall and 15-20 feet wide and can be planted in yards and tree lawns. Two of these trees were planted by the Tree Commission at the Aquatic Center.

Making

Lorain County Stronger

During our 36th year, we remain committed to our mission of promoting and supporting the success and growth of the Lorain County business community. This past year saw the dawn of a new economic development organization, ONE Lorain County, and the Chamber is committed to supporting its economic development strategy, which is designed to attract and build upon Lorain County’s past success.

The Chamber looks forward to partnering with ONE Lorain County and all those focused on growing Lorain County’s economy. This kind of “Progress through Partnerships” will allow us to continue to build bridges within our municipalities and

support the work that is taking place locally, regionally as well as statewide. Lorain County stands out as THE location that can provide a workforce that stands ready for future growth. As Ohio continues to win economic investment, we need to ensure that Lorain County receives our fair share of new projects.

Report Card as one piece of data to evaluate the overall success of the district in a variety of areas. We also analyze that data to help make decisions regarding areas of improvement and refinement.

Avon High School boasts five National Merit Semifinalists, 12 National Merit Commended Scholars, and four students who received a Perfect 36 on the ACT text.

In addition to our success inside the classrooms, we offer our students exceptional opportunities in the arts and athletics. Our 1,600-seat state-ofthe-art Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Avon High School hosts many school performances throughout the year and is available for rent to outside groups/ organizations in the community. Our bands, choirs and orchestras

have earned numerous Superior and Excellent ratings at Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) events. We invite the community to stay connected to the Avon Local Schools through our district website www.avonlocalschools.org and social media channels. Follow the Avon Local Schools on Facebook (Avon Local Schools) and X (Twitter) (@avonlocalsch), or follow me on X (Twitter) @Ben_Hodge

Recent athletic upgrades/projects (many through partnerships with local businesses and the City of Avon) include:

• Refurbished tennis and pickleball courts at Avon High School, now known as the Joyce Buick GMC Courts.

• New turf field at Avon Middle School used by our boys and girls sports programs. When the school district is not using the field, the city will be using it for their youth programs. The new field also has lights.

• New bleachers/stands at the Avon High School main gym.

• Another project in the works is the construction of a new driveway connection to the existing parking lot at Avon High School on the west side of the tennis courts to allow for another exit/entrance point onto Detroit Road.

Easy Start... Easy Transfer.

Lorain County Community College (LCCC) makes it easy to earn free college credit while in high school and then transfer credits to a four-year university.

When Garrett Rafn was a freshman at Avon Lake High School, he already knew he wanted to be a doctor. To get a head start, Garrett began taking Lorain County Community College classes through College Credit Plus his sophomore year.

By the time Garrett graduated from high school, he had earned 58 college credits and transferred every one of them to Cleveland State University. Two years later Garrett earned his Bachelor of Science in Health Science and Pre-medicine with a minor in biology. And he

“Graduating debt-free is something that I never would have believed I could do. And it’s because of LCCC and getting my start there.”

The Foundation of Oral Health

Although parents understand the importance of oral health, many are shocked to learn that tooth decay is the number one chronic childhood disease. Many parents do not think toothaches are serious. Treatment is often delayed until the tooth becomes infected, thinking that it will just get better on its own. Tooth decay is a bacteria that continues to spread to neighboring teeth unless treated. Children with tooth decay and dental pain are prone to poor sleep habits, poor speech articulation, missed school and lower performance, and chewing difficulty which all affect overall health and development.

The foundation of oral health begins as an infant and continues as children learn the importance of taking care of their own teeth. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child’s first visit to the dentist by their first birthday. Early prevention is the key to a positive attitude about oral health in later years. Pediatric dentists are the “pediatricians” of dentistry and receive specialized training beyond dental school to treat the needs of primary teeth, children with special healthcare needs, those who are medically compromised, behaviorally challenged, or extremely anxious, and have hospital affiliations to treat children who need treatment under sedation.

Key tips for parents: After bottle feeding wipe the infant’s mouth with a cloth to prevent early childhood caries (baby bottle decay). Brush your child’s teeth, at least once a day, until the child can neatly write their own name (typically till the age of 8). Early and routine dental visits, recommended every six months, combined with good dental habits and dietary practices, can prevent, slow, or even reverse the caries process in children and promote healthy smiles.

The Allure of Retro Design

In the ever-evolving world of home design, one trend that stands out is the resurgence of retro-style appliances. This phenomenon isn’t just about revisiting the past; it’s about redefining it. Today’s homeowners are increasingly drawn to appliances that offer the nostalgic charm of yesteryear, coupled with the advanced functionality of the present.

The 1950s and 1960s were iconic in shaping appliance design. Bold colors, curvaceous forms, and distinctive styles marked these early appliance eras. Today, modern appliances that embody these design elements bring a piece of history into our homes. They remind us of a simpler time, often evoking memories of our grandparents’ kitchens or the classic American diner vibe.

Refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers blend in seamlessly with the vintage kitchen aesthetic while offering efficient and modern technology. These appliances serve as a testament to the fact that you don’t have to sacrifice modern functionality for a retro look. They perfectly encapsulate the idea of bringing the best of the past into the present, making them not just appliances but centerpieces of kitchen design.

If you’re ready to update your appliances, Stewart’s TV & Appliances has you covered! Visit us online at www.stewartappliance.com or call 440-365-7321 and we’ll help you find your ideal appliances!

Making a Difference in Avon

Community Resource Services was founded in 1988 by a small group of concerned volunteers who wanted to address the growing need among community residents for health and welfare assistance.

They recognized a trend involving many families facing difficult financial situations for the first time in their lives, but who were not necessarily eligible for government programs. There was no other agency in the area equipped to handle this segment of the population, and CRS set out to fill that gap.

Since then, CRS has remained the primary social service agency in Avon and Avon Lake, consistently providing assistance to the economically disadvantaged. With the driving principle being “People Helping People,” CRS has been able to put those words into action countless times since its establishment. The agency has grown from one part-time director to its current staff, which includes a full-time executive director and six part-time client service coordinators.

CRS also serves as the local Salvation Army Service Unit, which enables the agency to provide additional assistance in the form of direct aid. As part of this affiliation, CRS provides volunteers for the annual holiday Kettle Collection program, and distributes a portion of the money collected to those in need. For more information, visit www.aalcrs.org.
