Avon continues to be a place where individuals and families want to live, given our great neighborhoods, diversified housing, high performing schools and outstanding safety forces.
We have an open, business-friendly environment drawing large scale businesses, midsize manufacturing, popular national chains and a host of small businesses, many owned by residents. You can easily shop for groceries, clothing or specialty items; do your banking; eat at casual or fine dining restaurants; and obtain services from a doctor, hairstylist/barber, florist or home improvement company. There is no
need to leave the city of Avon for all of these services.
The City of Avon is working hard to bring its residents all that they desire in their hometown. Please do not hesitate to contact us at City Hall if we can help you in any way. We are here to assist you.
It is an honor for me to serve the residents as Mayor of Avon.

By Ken McEntee
Whether you want to explore nature or advance your knowledge, opportunities continue to expand in Avon, promised Mayor Bryan Jensen. Last fall, a $9 million renovation project doubled the size and increased the offerings at the Avon Branch of the Lorain County Library. Meanwhile, the City’s park space is expected to continue
to expand this year with the opening of recently acquired land off Stony Ridge Road.
A town that once was known for its farmland and vineyards, Avon is a growing community that balances parks and recreational areas with modern amenities, Jensen said. “Avon has virtually everything you need right here in town, and if you want to go to the big city

Downtown Cleveland is just 20 miles away,” Jensen emphasized. “We have plenty of things to do for everybody from young children to seniors. We have convenient shopping, including Meijer and Heinen’s supermarkets and stores like Costco and Target, plus a lot of small, family-owned businesses that continue to
contribute to the city’s small town charm.”
The library expansion included a 16,000 squarefoot addition that featured a reading garden, a driveup window, expanded meeting rooms, technology upgrades and a dedicated space for children and youth programming, the Lorain County Library announced. “The addition is just phenomenal,” Jensen said. “People think of libraries as a lot of books, but there are also a lot of new technologies, like 3-D printers, available.”

“I use Cooper Disposal for 2 reasons. #1 is that they always provide great service and fast turnaround on their boxes. #2 and probably the most important, Mike Cooper is always giving back to his local community, so I know every box I buy from him a portion of that is going to a great organization or youth sports program in the community.”
“Cooper Disposal has been incredible to work with. They cut my dumpster bill by 30 percent per year and Mike Cooper is always available to help my company out anytime we need anything.”

Zack Mitchell, Westland Heating and Air Conditioning
“Mike & Sheila Cooper are always willing to help Avon Sports. Last year, Cooper Disposal donated all the dumpsters needed to demo the old Locker Room. The Cooper’s donated an equipment shed for youth football and are always asking what else they can do. They are the best of the best and make the City of Avon a better place.”

The expansion compliments other recent developments at or near the library, such as Storybook Trail and Every Child’s Playground, an inclusive project that provides access to children and adults of all abilities, including wheelchair restricted people.
The newest park area, a 30acre site, will include dog trails and an arboretum.
“It will have a scenic wooden bridge and trails that go along the French Creek area and open areas for people to get outside and enjoy the fresh air with their families.,” Jensen said. In 2021, the city added 17 acres of new park area called Eagle Point Park – which incudes a
four acre, stocked pond — close to Veterans Memorial Park.
The Avon Local School District’s new Performing Arts Center, which was completed in April 2022, is another new community project. Featuring 1,600- and 610-seat auditoriums and a 65-x-54 foot

With three interchanges on I-90, Avon provides strategic transportation access for local businesses. “Much of our business development centers around our proximity to the Ford assembly plant in Avon Lake, which is looking to expand,” Jensen said. “That will benefit Avon and all of the surrounding communities.”
Last summer, Ford announced a $1.5 billion investment at the plant to manufacture electric vehicles.
The recent opening of Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems’ new world headquarters, on Chester Road, has provided a major benefit to the city, the mayor noted. The company designs, develops and supplies safety technologies, energy management solutions and air brake charging and control systems for trucks and other commercial vehicles. “Bendix brought more than 500 full time jobs, including high-end, engineering jobs, to Avon,” he said. “The jobs and the payroll taxes Bendix creates have a big impact on the services and amenities we can offer as well as on education. It offers opportunities right here in our own town. Kids can get engineering degrees and be able to come to work in their hometown. Not to mention, with all of our healthcare facilities, students can get degrees in healthcare and work here in Avon, including at the first-class Cleveland Clinic hospital. Our residents are fortunate to have so many choices right here in town.”

Shinto Japanese Steakhouse & Sushi Bar
A Westlake Favorite Serves Up Fresh Japanese Cuisine and Great Atmosphere
Shinto isn’t just about the food. It’s also about the experience, says GM Brittany Swan. The beauty of the décor, the up-tempo music and the warmth and welcoming friendliness of the staff and customers adds to the tantalizing taste on your tongue, appealing to your every sense.
“You feel the energy when you enter,” Brittany says. “Most customers come here to celebrate and enjoy an evening out, beginning with a great cocktail, a delicious dinner and then relaxation out on the patio.”
Shinto, a Westlake favorite, and in Strongsville, offers a contemporary atmosphere that features the best in sushi and Japanese cuisine prepared hibachi style by entertaining tableside chefs. The spacious environment is inviting for people of all ages.
While at Shinto, be sure to enjoy a signature martini or a Sake Bomb. “A restaurant itself is just tables and chairs,” Brittany says. “The people and the atmosphere you experience at Shinto are what makes it special.”

Avon Local Schools
nspirin Ecellence
The Avon Local School District provides an outstanding educational experience for our nearly 4,700 students. Our mission is to educate the whole student in an inclusive environment that inspires personal excellence. We are proud of our students’ achievements, and we are grateful to have a supportive staff and community.
Our vision is to create a legacy of excellence, innovation and service fostered through collaborations within the community. The learning environment includes a variety of instructional methods and resources which encourages students to be independent, imaginative, responsible learners. A student-centered environment enables them to be productive, successful, and contributing members of society.
Avon students excel both in and outside the classroom. Our robust course offerings, and extra-curricular and co-curricular activities set our school district apart from others in Northeast Ohio. Avon High School ranks No. 1 in Lorain County; No. 9 in Northeast Ohio; No. 31 in Ohio; and No. 839 nationally, according to rankings annually featured in U.S. News and World Report magazine.
In the spring of 2022, the Avon Local Schools officially welcomed guests to the district’s new 13,489-sq.-ft.
Avon Performing Arts Center. The 1,600 seat, state-ofthe-art facility has already hosted hundreds of school performances, as well as outside events through our rental agreements. We invite you to come and check out future performances.

Avon High School students are offered the opportunity to take CCP (College Credit Plus) Biology classes.
Lorain County Community College is ramping up its Earn and Learn programs, providing students opportunities to earn an income while they gain relevant job experience and attend classes. This format, where students split their time between coursework and industry-specific employment, began in LCCC’s microelectronic manufacturing program. It’s been so successful — maintaining 100% employment rates for students postgraduation — that the college has replicated the format across many career pathways.

eart Heath: Know These 4 Important Numbers
Heart-related issues like stroke and heart disease can affect anyone, and you can help reduce your risk by monitoring these factors:
1. LDL cholesterol. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol contributes to cholesterol buildup, arterial blockages and coronary heart disease.
Testing Frequency: Every five years
Target number: <100mg/dL
2. Physical activity. Set a goal of 150 minutes per week of moderate intensity exercise.
3. Triglycerides. Triglycerides are not a type of cholesterol; however, high levels of this blood fat are linked to coronary heart disease, especially in women.
Testing Frequency: Every five years
Target number: <150mg/dL
4. Blood pressure. Blood pressure often rises as we age. High blood pressure (hypertension) is silent, but it raises the risk of heart disease, stroke and other problems.
Testing Frequency: Every one to two years
Target number: Under 120/80
“Checking your numbers, getting recommended testing and regular visits to your primary care provider or cardiologist will help present an overall picture of your heart health,” says Rebecca Starck, MD, President of Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital at Richard E. Jacobs Campus. “If you need care, our physicians and specialists will work with you to treat any conditions — right here in your community.”

Keep It
Cleaning your home and business is the key to being happy and healthy. Maintaining a clean environment reduces pollution, preserves our biosphere, protects endangered species, and helps preserve the earth’s natural resources.
Here are some cleaning tips to keep your home in its best condition: 1
Cleaning should always start from the least soiled areas (cleanest) first to the most soiled areas (dirtiest) last and from higher levels to lower levels so that debris may fall on the floor and is cleaned last. Detergent and/ or disinfectant solutions must be discarded after each use.
2Periodically, cleaning your carpet and upholstery, tile and grout, drapery, and area rugs will ensure that your home remains as clean and germ free as possible. You might want to consider a monthly or quarterly maintenance program and hire a professional. 3
If you experience a fire, flood, or vandalism in your home, there are experts available to help restore your home to its’ original shape. Find a reputable company that will work with your insurance agent so that your claim will receive prompt attention. Stabilizing your home after a disaster can make a huge difference in the outcome of remediation.
Duraclean, located in Avon, can help you keep your home and business sparkling clean. No job is too small or large for them. Contact them for your cleaning and restoration needs at 440-937-5900 or visit www.duracleanohio.com.

TODAY'S REAL ESTATE MARKET
The Avon Real Estate market is filled with opportunity. Avon is currently a Sellers Housing Market. On average, so far in 2023, there are 45 homes active in the Avon market monthly. The demand remains strong and steady. The median sold price of an Avon home sells at $400,000. When searching for a home, finding a professional agent with deep knowledge of the local real estate market is imperative. For those who wish to sell their home in the current real estate environment, the property must be competitively and correctly positioned within the Avon real estate market. A great agent will distinguish your home, so it stands out among the others.
TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY
Even though the interest rates have increased from their historic low, the data indicates that home values remain strong. If you are looking to list your home, a Sellers’ Market, which we are currently

experiencing in Avon, is the time to list and sell. If you are in the market to buy a home, I stick with the following statement from Dave Ramsey… ”if you love the house, buy the house. You can always refinance to obtain a lower rate at some point in the future, but the home that offers the lifestyle you desire might not wait”!

Equipped with 600 board games (and counting), “I’m Possible Games,” as it will be called, will serve as a space where adults with intellectual disabilities as well as others, can hang out and have fun.
Robin Kane, with the help of her husband and daughters, is working toward opening a board game café in Avon. Growing up, Shelby, Robin’s daughter, thrived in school surrounded by her teachers and classmates. Now that she has graduated, that community is gone.
Until a permanent location can be found, they have been offering pop-up events where so far, dozens have gathered and fun was had by all.
“I spent my whole life thinking how can I make Shelby’s life better, how I can make everyone’s life better and more welcoming for people born with disabilities,” Shelby’s sister, Shea Kane said.
