ANZAC Day

Honouring the ANZAC Spirit

Certainly one of our country’s more important annual occasions, if not the most important, ANZAC Day specifically marks the date on which our troops, entering into battle for the first time as representatives of our young nation, landed on the unforgiving shores of Gallipoli at dawn on April 25th, 1915, during World War I. In honouring the courage, fortitude, mateship and sacrifice of these soldiers, we also show respect for all others who have fought on behalf of our country in wars and conflicts. In ceremonies and silent minutes of remembrance we reflect on the nature of war and freedom, and give thanks for the way of life we are privileged to enjoy. ANZAC Day is typically marked by a Dawn Service, with the city’s largest Dawn Service commencing at 6am in the forecourt of the Shrine of Remembrance, followed immediately after by the official wreath laying. At 9am the ANZAC Day March sets off from the intersection of Swanston and Little Bourke Streets, concluding at The Shrine of Remembrance at approximately 1pm for the Commemorative Service.
