With economic indicators and business news headlines suggesting the Reserve Bank is poised to make further rate cuts, now may not be the time to move to fixed rate home loans. Latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show there was a significant surge towards fixed rate home loans in March (before the Reserve Bank’s rate cuts), with 14.5 per cent of loans being fixed. This is the highest figure for fixed rate loans since the heady days of the GFC in 2008. Many of these home loan clients were no doubt concerned about the relative uncertainty around official rate cuts, and were enticed by the 6.3 per cent fixed rate loans several banks advertised.
