Despite ANZ’s move to independently raise their own interest rates, citing increases in funding issue costs, none of the other three big lenders have followed suit. A drop in official interest rates by an anticipated 25 basis points in May by the Reserve Bank will put significant pressure on the banks to pass on interest rate savings to their customers. With the federal budget looming, the Financial Review recently reported that a budget surplus could push rates downwards and several analysts have predicted downward pressure on interest rates for the remainder of the financial year.
