SHIRLEY YOUNG SOBREMONTE A Timeless Legacy: Lawrence in Shirley’s Temple of Love Photographed by HENRY FERRER

N

ewly widowed Shirley always considered life as a mystery, full of ups and downs and the

only certain thing about it is change. Perhaps this is why she and her late husband Lawrence devoted themselves to their family and to the Rotary Club. “The zest for life comes from doing the things we love as a family and the work we do to help the community through the Rotary Club,” Shirley enthuses. In fact, one of her cherished moments was when she was recognized and awarded by the Rotary Club as the most outstanding first class president in 2014. She also recounts her joy at being awarded as Manila’s Best Dressed in 2014 and awarded in 2013 as one of the Empowered Women of Achievement.

IMAGESASIA7

IMAGESASIA 8

But what matters most to Shirley is touching peoples lives and sharing her blessings with them. Her awards, while important, are just temporary but the fulfilment she gets from making a difference in peoples lives will last a lifetime. Coming from humble and modest beginnings, sharing the same values with her late husband is the key to success. They both believed in perseverance, determination and a positive outlook in life. “As a man think in his heart, so is he” Shirley believes that what we think of ourselves will determine what we will be. That through our thoughts we can make, or unmake ourselves. If you are unhappy with your current situation then make the conscious choice to change it. Blessed with three children, she can see how their devotion to family is paying off. Her eldest child is an accomplished physician in the US while their second child, after taking a master’s degree in Spain, is now a marketing officer in one of the leading banks in the country. Their youngest boy is a freshman in high school and is growing up to be a fine young man.

IMAGESASIA 9

Her family is well-travelled. They have gone as far north as Alaska, and far south as Australia. They made it a point to travel at least once a year because they highly value the family bonding and quality time they enjoy during their travels. With their countless sojourns, even though Lawrence has gone on to a better place, as a family they continue to recount and create new memories of joyful moments together which help ease the pain of missing the late husband and father. Shirley believes that fashion style should be a very personal one, dictated more by your own style, rather than the latest fad. For instance, flaunting one’s assets, while concealing imperfections is key, so choosing the correct style for each person is a very personal choice. Moreover, appropriate attire for an occasion should always prevail over current fashion. Shirley also believes that real and lasting beauty is best achieved with as little make up as possible. Aside from the appeal of a natural look, allowing the skin to breathe gives it a healthy and natural glow that further enhances one’s beauty. A true sports enthusiast, Shirley enjoys a variety of sports including swimming, badminton, tennis and ballroom dancing. She also enjoys exercising her vocal cords by engaging in karaoke get-together with friends every now and then. Back in her younger days, like most youths, Shirley felt that she had to be the master of her fate. She believes that her destiny was dictated solely by her choices. Eventually though, she realized that despite our best efforts, God the most high can intervene whenever he wanted, in whatever manner he desires. Hence from being the sole captain of her ship, she now believes in just doing the best you can and letting God take care of the rest.

IMAGESASIA 10

There are two people Shirley admires the most in this life: her father, who taught her the value of perseverance and hard work, and her late husband, who taught her the power of positive thinking and resilience. She credits her strong personality to these two very special men in her life. A BS Math degree holder, Shirley is managing director of two trading companies. A success story in itself, but she believes that material things can provide only temporary comfort and happiness. That ultimately, happiness is simply a state of mind, a decision we make every day whether to be happy or not. For the future, Shirley wants only the simplest and most fulfilling joys in life. Happiness with family, peace of mind, good health and a contented heart.

JOEL CRUZ A Legacy Of Success

Photographed by HENRY FERRER

I

n less than two decades Joel Cruz has attained what takes others a lifetime to achieve. He has

made his company Aficionado a mainstay in all the large malls in the country, and he has made his name known, even before he came up with Joel Cruz Signatures. The bulk of Joel’s time nowadays is spent on the two top priorities in his life, his company and his family. Joel credits his exemplary success to his focused mindset that they are interwined and of equal priority. After all, he notes that it is the earnings of his company that provides him with the means to support and uplift the life of his family. It is his family that inspires him to forge ahead, innovate and grow his company. Coming from a large family of 7 siblings, Joel wants a large family for himself and he has begun by having twins from a Russian surrogate mother. As of the moment, the beautiful twins are already 3-years old. Joel decided it was time for new members of the family and he expects a new set of twins this October 2015 thus giving him even more reason to build upon the runaway success of Aficionado. A man of many talents. Joel initially took BS Psychology in UST as preparation for what his parents thought would be a career in medicine. However in the end, it was the creative streak of Joel that prevailed and he put up an apparel company after which he created Aficionado and the rest is history.

IMAGESASIA 15

IMAGESASIA 16

His creative side does not end in perfumery, he also dabbles in interior design for his many homes particularly in his condominium along Roxas boulevard, Tagaytay Mansion aptly named Mansion of the Lord of Scents, White House of the Lord of Scents in Camp John Hay Baguio and lately, his ancestral house in Sampaloc Manila as a gift to his mother. Creativity usually goes hand in hand with appreciating good design and this is reflected in the items that Joel loves to collect. Prior to creating Afficionado, he collected designer clothes and perfumes specially Halston Z-14 which had to be ordered from the US through his sister. When his company began to grow, he indulged his appreciation for larger creations and began to collect vehicles like his Mercedes Benz sports car, coupes and SUVs. When he began travelling a lot, he also decided to collect Louis Vuitton luggage.

Today, he focuses on a collection for potential investments. This is what led him to what he does today to indulge his collecting fever. He is intent on buying real estate properties such as houses and condominiums, decorating them with the interesting and unique pieces that he buys from time to time. While his fashion style involve making a statement and standing out from the crowd through interesting and different designs. He is keen on supporting Filipino designers rather than imported brands. Joel patronizes Paul Cabral, JC Buendia, Eric Pineda, Oliver Tolentino, Randy Ortiz, Inno Sotto, no name a few. As a philanthropist, Joel made it a point to provide donations and spend time to care for those in need at charitable institutions during the annual anniversary celebration of Aficionado. These institutions include Hospicio de San Jose, Asilo de San Vicente de Paul, Tahanang Walang Hagdanan, Missionaries of Charity Home of Joy in Tayuman (from the Order of Sisters of Mother Theresa) and UP-PGH Pediatric Wards 9 &11. He also supports cancer related organizations such as the Philippine Cancer Society where he is Ambassador for Life. He also supports projects such as the Relay for Life also organized by the Philippine Cancer Society, Kythe Foundation, Philippine Children’s Medical Center Cancer Wing and the EJ Litton Foundation.

IMAGESASIA 17

Joel responds wholeheartedly to disaster relief efforts such the “Four A Good Cause” fund raiser for Yolanda survivors where the 4 refers to donating 4 pesos for every purchase of P245 by their customers. This donation is done via his “Joel S. Cruz Aficionado Foundation Inc.” Then there are very substantial cash donations for SM Cares at P200,000 worth equivalent to one house, the ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya with another P200,000 donation during their 25th Anniversary, the Kapuso Foundation through Ms. Mel Tiangco with another P200,000.00 and the Philippine National Red Cross during their Fundraising Kick Off for another P200,000.00.

Going beyond donations and charity work, Joel is also proud of being able to provide equal employment opportunities for a substantial number of people through his ever growing sales and manufacturing operations. Memorable experiences are part and parcel for an accomplished businessman. Opening his business for franchising, making his first million, the first export of his product, various industry certifications are some of the milestones he treasures. He is well-recognized as an entrepreneur and philanthropist by different organizations such as the Philippine Retailers Association, his alma mater UST, Forbes Asia and more. But what counts as the most memorable experience of his life is being able to successfully father 2 kids via surrogacy after a 10 year struggle. This is also what makes his travels to Moscow most significant because this was where he went to have the in vitro fertilization for his twins. Well known for his work ethic and spirituality, Joel sees himself as a fair and generous leader. He recognizes talented workers as well as those who strive for excellence and makes sure that they are rewarded accordingly. With a busy lifestyle, Joel knows that health is crucial and he embraces a healthy routine. This includes engaging in Zumba 3 times a week, avoiding beef or fatty meat, favoring veggies, fruits, fish and chicken.

IMAGESASIA 18

He likewise advocates the same healthy lifestyle for his employees and he has made it a must for them to have a 2 minute exercise session after their morning prayers. For his personal skin and hair care, Joel swears by his products. He opts to use his exfoliating shower gel as shampoo and he also uses his lotion extensively to keep his skin looking and feeling young. For the future, Joel would like to see his company Aficionado Germany Perfume become a global brand, recognized as a Philippine brand of perfume and personal care products. He also wants to have a big family just like what he had as a child. With 2 kids now and 2 more on the way, Joel is well on his way to achieving his wishes.

IMAGESASIA 19

In a story worthy of “The Secret” Joel shares that as a young boy he would join his father when making deliveries of tables and chairs to Forbes Park. He would marvel at the size of the houses and wonder why they didn’t have one and dreaming of one day living in one. He would also dream of having a place in Roxas Boulevard with a view of the sea. Today, Joel has these and more. He is a living proof of the power of dreams. Because of the kindness in his heart, he has also made dreams come true for a lot of people. Legacy is very important for Joel, and at this early point in his life, it is clear to see that he has already created a lasting legacy.

IVAN CO Master of his Fate

Photographed by HENRY FERRER

M

aster of His Fate” is a phrase that best describes Ivan Co. He takes his place in a family

business where the two previous generations distinguished themselves in the jewelry business. Others speak of merely passing the torch, in Ivan’s case he built on the success of the previous generations and carved a niche of his own. For Ivan Co, it certainly was not an easy journey and it’s one that began at an early age. Despite being a third generation jeweler it took quite a while before he was able to begin his own company. It was a challenging endeavor and hard choice where he had to deliberately let go of a secured life and go head on to a life full of challenges. It is not surprising that he counts among his most memorable experiences in life, those struggles which he had to endure at quite a young age. He is very appreciative of his loving wife Dior who provided him much support through all these struggles. Among all the people that Ivan admires, he looks up to David and Victoria Beckham, not only for their style, partnership and loyalty but also for the fact that they work well together for such a long time. It is something that Ivan and Dior emulate well in their own marriage. Ivan considers himself an introvert and a late bloomer. In fact, he began his education immersed in Multimedia Arts at the De La Salle University, College of St. Benilde. It was only later that he got a scholarship in the Gemological Institute of America in Hong Kong for a jewelry design course.

IMAGESASIA 27

IMAGESASIA 28

Ivan strove for excellence in various fields. He distinguished himself as a multimedia specialist and cinematographer, in the years prior to launching his own jewelry business. Hence, it was this move from an established career in multimedia, to forging a new path in the jewelry business that created anxiety and trials that this married couple encountered. A highly principled man, Ivan values his commitments to other people. He places the utmost importance in being a man of his word. And he likewise has the highest respect for people who keep their word, and follow through on their commitments. “Integrity is the way to succeed and money isn’t always the currency,” asserted Ivan. It’s a simple statement but one that has profound implications. Ivan believes that as long as you are a man of your word and you work hard, you will gain respect and reach your goals. He has successfully established and promoted his own company - Ornamento Jewelry. As CEO of Ornamento, Ivan has quite a lot on his plate and at this point in his life, making Ornamento a recognized company internationally and making it a staple brand in the Philippines are his top priorities at the moment. In their leisure time, Ivan and Dior engage in strength training and yoga to keep fit. They also engage in jewelry design and other creative endeavors as hobbies, means of stress reduction and opportunities to bond with each other. Aside from this, he also collects Italian suits and shoes whenever possible. He hastens to say that he prefers to go for the generic Italian shoes sold in the flea markets of Milan and Florence over those expensive branded ones sold in Italian boutique shops.

IMAGESASIA 29 With this penchant for things Italian, it comes as no surprise that his fashion style is both clean cut and professional. He prefers to be presentable, up to date but not trendy. He relies on Dior to provide accents to his style to make it more interesting. When asked about how he keeps his looks perennially young, he points to Dior, who is an accomplished makeup artist, as being the source of his skin and hair care regimen and provider of his health supplements. It certainly was quite a struggle for Ivan to be where he is today. But being his own boss and carrying on a family tradition is its own reward. Together with Dior, whom he lovingly refers to as the best partner in the world, it seems that this is just the beginning and Ivan is destined for even more greatness.

CANDY HUANG Flow of Integrity and Grace Photographed by HENRY FERRER

C

andy Huang is a product of the prestigious all girls’ school, St. Theresa’s College,

Manila. She studied there from grade school to college where she acquired diligence on academics from the Belgian nuns. Her mother, who studied at St. Theresa’s College as well, experienced the Belgian nuns’ discipline while her father’s exemplary work as a lawyer also contributed to how she is as a person. She would go on to take her Master’s degree in Business Administration in Ateneo de Manila University. Candy describes herself as a responsible human being who takes her duties to her family, friends and business associates to heart. She values hard work and excellence. She practices punctuality as a demonstration of respect to other people’s time. She also believes that the best legacy to leave behind is a good name that is why she applies honesty in all her dealings. Candy started working when she was in high school. She was successful in her small business teaching Jazz and Hawaiian dancing to children from ages 7-14. Now, she manages rentals of her family owned properties and occasionally involves herself in joint ventures in townhouses construction.

IMAGESASIA 33

IMAGESASIA 34

Candy shared that she is into collecting artifacts specifically Chinese jars and vases. She also collects paintings of local artists. She started collecting art pieces in her late teens, squirrelling away her school allowance and later her meager salary to buy whatever caught her eye. She managed to collect a few art works of Malang, Ang Kiu Kok, Arturo Luz, Antonio, Tam Austria Baldemor, Sanso, Memije, Mahilum, Manansala, H.R. Ocampo, and Ben Cab. She loves traveling with family and friends. For her, those trips are very memorable experiences. She believes that travel enriches one’s perspective in life and when shared with the people you love is truly rewarding. She often travels to Europe and relishes her wonderful experiences every time. She enjoyed a safari tour in South Africa where she witnessed a lion circling his prey and catching it; watched the amazing sunset on top of the sand dunes of Moroccan desert on a camel ride; took river cruises in Budapest, Thailand, Germany and Turkey; discovered history in Dubrovnik, Croatia, St. Petersburg and Moscow, Lichtenstein, the old Spanish towns of Salamanca, Toledo and Santander, the quaint sites of Prague in Czechoslovakia, and Santorini, Greece. Candy also shared her preference in fashion, favoring classic and simple, yet elegant clothes. She chooses accessories that are the latest fad in fashion. She likes to keep herself abreast of what’s in and what’s out. However, she makes it a point to choose only the items that are age appropriate and only the ones that pleases her eyes. Her belief is that less is more. She said, “a simple dress for instance with just the right accessory is my kind of style.” When it comes to her beauty secret, she said, “moisturize and hydrate as often as possible and as early as possible. Starting in your 20s is a good idea.” In keeping herself slim, she eats in moderation. She is not a believer of diet plans to keep her body fit. She eats everything she likes in manageable portions.

IMAGESASIA 35 “My greatest achievement in my personal life is being able to successfully raise a family with mostly good results. In business, my greatest achievement is being able to preserve and significantly upgrade my parent’s properties through a combination of conservative but forward looking decisions,” she stated. Candy is proud of her loving husband John Huang who is currently a company Chief Finance Officer. She is also happy with her children who are all upstanding individuals. Her first born, Marie Angelique, is a product of Poveda and Ateneo Schools. She has her own family and presently living in Cebu where she and her husband manage an export company selling coconut tree organic vinegar, sugar and sauces as well as pottery.

IMAGESASIA 36

Candy’s second child is Jon Carlo, a Xavier and Ateneo graduate just like his dad. Jon works for one of the leading IT providers, INDRA Phils. Inc. He is now living independently and so far doing a good job in keeping his check book intact. John Michael, the youngest in the family came from Xavier and Ateneo as well. He pursued further studies in Film Directing and Photography in New Zealand and Big Foot International Academy Film School. “I try to look at the positive side of life. The ups and downs are part of the course and it is counterproductive to go against the natural flow. Riding the waves is more practical. I am grateful for all my success and I never lose hope when there’s a problem. If a problem can be solved, then it is well and good. If it can’t be solved, then it can’t be solved,” Candy highlighted as her outlook in life.

For her, life can be simple. There’s no use in getting stressed over challenges for a long time. Letting go is usually the best thing to do. She admires humanitarian notables Mother Teresa, Audrey Hepburn, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and Helen Keller who have risen above themselves to care enough to serve humanity and create a better world. Candy ended the interview with her hopes and dreams for our country. She said, she would like to help the country through averting corruption in politics and business. It can take one step at a time and one individual at a time. She endeavors to be a role model for honesty and integrity in all her social and business relationships.

Sizzling Red Ball for charity

The Lesley Mobo models

Lesley Mobo collecton Now on its 7th year, the annual Red Charity Gala is a lavish fund-raising event hosted by society icons Tessa Prieto-Valdez and Kaye Tinga for the benefit of the Philippine Red Cross and the Assumption High School Batch 1981 Foundation. Every year the event just keeps on topping itself—and guests can expect to get “very drunk” in order to bid very high, as the co-hostesses like to joke. The Bench models

A

dark and elegant chandeliered setting, luxurious

garments and an abundance of roses all set the tone for a 16th-century Tudor-style affair at the Makati Shangri-La Rizal Ballroom held recently. The buffet of nearly naked men outside and an elaborately sequined, neon-bright finale fashion show, however, gave away the 2015-ness of it all.

Items auctioned to raise the funds included delicate Piaget rose earrings set with 0.12 carat diamonds, an exclusive private island tour from Crimson Hotel, a “legendary” Louis XIII Cognac from Remy Martin, an Eiffel Tower View Room at Shangri-La Paris and a Balesin Island Club share worth P2.2 million. In total, the “loudest silent auction,” hosted by Valdes and Tim Yap, raised close to P5 million, all for charity.

Despite having been made with the intent “not to steal the scene,” the bewitching set was another major spectacle that guests could not help noticing upon entering the main venue. Designed by Ohm David under the direction of Ariel Lozada, the room was draped in black with elegant candelabras and flower arrangements at each table punctuated by a large angular structure that literally set the stage for an exciting show ahead. "There is an underlying coldness in the design which is slowly being stripped bare, while echoing thoughts of hope and renewal. Red symbolically connects all the elements," said David of his design. From cocktails to curtain call, Tinga and her co-hostess were easily visible as they flitted from table to table in their shimmering numbers designed by none other than the featured designer for the night, London-based Lesley Mobo. The hyper-influenced 40-piece collection took the bright sequins of 70s disco and put it together with long, flowing tulle and romantic, medieval kirtles, all the while making use of inverted triangle silhouettes from the 80s and an aerobics-style neon palette here and there. In this seasoned designer’s dazzling display, all time was lost.

This was followed by the main event: a bombardment of the senses that had an overwhelming, literally almost blinding effect, much like fireworks. Some very wearable mini-dresses with sleek, long sleeves were covered in sequins of every color, from disco gold to exotic blue-green. Highcollared ruffled dresses in shimmering fabric and layered with sheer capes and large, puffed sleeves were both very Pop Diva and Medieval Princess at the same time. Bright pink netted gloves, purple stockings and large teased hairdos made their appearances between pieces. An overdose of sequins made it hard to look away, but it was also the fun and unmistakeable, buzzing glamour delivered in piece after piece that really kept all eyes on the runway What better way to celebrate public good than through a display of beauty that shines both on the surface and deep within?
