In Pursuit of Passion

Writing and editing has always been my first love. When I was in elementary school, I Contributing Editors gathered up several articles, pieced and pasted JAMES BENEDICT SACRAMENTO (Southern/Northern California) together images and photocopied it for distribution MARZ CAVESTANY‐SINGH (Sydney, Australia) among my classmates. Luckily, at the moment I least expect it, the universe has conspired for a serendipitous meeting with esteemed Publisher Ernest Gonzaga and his merry band of Editors from across the globe, artistic photographers and writers pursuing the one great passion of artistic expression, and the rest evidently is history. In close alliance to the international editorial team with an expansive breathe of imagination and creativity, we uncovered the inertia and kinetic energy behind outstanding personalities, places and other things of value. Like enchantment, the images and words we cast connects you to inspiring icons who built a name for themselves from the ground up and the quiet intensity and mystery of grace, success, courage, ecstasy in the subtleties of a provocative gaze, a powerful f l stance, t a falling f lli l f a sparkle leaf, kl off wine, a certain mood, the unraveling of even what’s ineffable. This issue presents art as an expression of human freedom and passion. We endeavor to sting your eyes and senses, and raise your spirit in encountering beauty in a single and mesmerizing moment from the front row seat. Ceize the moment! Ceize the day!

or Seb Chua, an award-winning sculptor, creativity is a journey in discovery. He believes creating artworks is a special moment, even made more special when it is born out of a noble desire to help others. Chua’s desire is becoming a reality as he is using his creative talent to save the lives of women and children. His creation, “Mother’s Love,” is UNICEF’s symbol for its national campaign to better their plight. The cold cast bronze sculpture of a breastfeeding mother cradling her child is a touching symbol of the intrinsic bond between mother and child. The award-winning sculptor seeks to bring forth the best in Filipino art and sculpture through figures interpreted in a very modern, abstracted style. A graduate of UST Fine Arts and Columbia College in Canada, he immerses himself in his love for art apart from being at the helm of product research and design for his family business. “The wealth of artistic imagination, the pursuit of excellence, ll and d the th lofty l ft goals l att the th very foundation f d ti off his hi art practice, Chua has amply proved that artists can indeed shine even after making a living in another profession so long as they are armed with the passion and the mission to sail forth, create meaningful art, and ultimately attain what they have originally set out for art’s greater glory,” art critic Gino Dormiendo describes Chua’s genius. galleries such as Art Asia and Chua has exhibited in g Artwalk at SM Megamall, and is the recipient of an honorable mention in the Art Association of the Philippines’ (AAP) 2006 annual exhibit. His collaboration with UNICEF, he hopes to “give children the chance to live and have a healthy life,” giving mothers and children a better chance at survival through an artwork celebrating the miracle of creation. “II consider every work unique, unique every art original. original These are precious and priceless moments that would leave a legacy. IMAGERY: Enchanting Cagbalete Cagbalete Island is somewhat well-preserved, tranquil and rustic place. The island’s

allure, aside from its clear waters and untouched shape, is its ease of access. Mauban is only about four hours’ drive from Manila. From the Mauban pier, it takes 45 minutes to reach Cagbalete by boat.

The lodgings are nowhere near the prevailing amenities of middle-of-the-road beaches. At Pansacola, Pansacola one would spend the night in a nipa hut with open windows and a nonexistent door yet one can sleep heavenly as it is shrouded by the sea breeze. Cagbalete isn’t for deep-sea swimmers or snorkelers. Perhaps some other part of the island is, the sea was flat and shallow; at low tide, one could walk afar on radiant, newly exposed sand. But when the tide returns, the waters slink to about a stone’s throw away from the cottages, conveying with them the breezy puff of air and the calm hum of slim waves flouting on sand. There is always the island, though the sand, the sea and all memory of them. They’re more than good enough to hold on to the sublime.

While the collections of more tested designers are highlighted during the event, the Philippine Fashion Week served just as well as a plinth for up and coming designers to showcase their inventive and spanking new talent. Former Manila top model and artist, Germany-based Joyce Penas Pilarsky, made her debut as accessories designer. designer She collaborated with fashion designer John Guarnes. Guarnes Her innovative and novel designs boasted Guarnes’ simple yet unusual silhouettes. Pilarsky’s jewel accessories were utilized all over the body. Even Guarnes’ unfussy men’s line became radiant and eye catching. The other designers who completed this segment of the show included Czarina Villa, Kenneth Chua, Lizanne Cua and Noel Crisostomo. Rebellion, adventurism, and a devil-may-care attitude dominated the fashion event. One man in his weather-beaten jeans stole the show from the reigning catwalk superstars, action star Robin Padilla. The “Dstrukt” denim wars showcased Jag’s and 2010 collections. Robin walked the ramp together with his children Ali and Kylie. Actor/model Will Devaughn shared the ramp, too with Robin. Rachy turned bingo shakers into vases whereas bingo cards were cut and formed into flower petals with pollen grains adorning it made out of the “bolilio.” “Tagay” proves the insight of Rachy in observing the way of living for the people in the village and the Lahar Blooms Blooms” is the artist artist’ss way of honoring the flexibility of the “Lahar Filipino spirit.

Rachy’s ardor for his Filipino heritage remains present throughout his work, as the essence of his installations attest to his love and respect for both Filipino culture and tradition.

Nosing Around… By y ERNEST GONZAGA

THE RACHY CUNA’S DRAMA It was a drama like no other, the type that only

the Philippines’ top floral architect, Rachy Cuna, could think of, a creation of masterpieces that bask in its wit and represent a p legacy. g y Filipino

Rachy recently opened his latest installation exhibit entitled “Drama Cuna” at the National Museum in Manila. On public display for the first time were 14 installations, among them an assortment of his paintings and various pieces of jewelry.

Rachy Cuna

The grandiose event had no specific guest of honor to cut the ribbon at the opening because Rachy believed that the Filipino people should be his guests of honor. These guests were given flowers made of rattan sticks, which were amusingly worn around their heads, wrists, hands, arms and even hips.

Pia HontIveros and Arwin Pagkaliwawan

Seen at the scene were National Museum director Cora Albina, Precy Ramos and Sandra Ramos-Padilla of the National Bookstore, PEZA director Lilia Delima, Betsy Westendorf-Brias, Fr. Mat de Jesus of San Beda among others. The Bayanihan Dance Company added color to the vibrant affair. As always, drama was present in the creations of Rachy, as his installations made use of materials normally found in the environs such as vines, twigs, bamboo, fossilized flowers, leaves among other “found found objects. objects.” These types of materials, which are used openhandedly in his installations, add an interesting use of natural forms to his daring creations.

True to form as a statesman and in a rare show of class in often controversial and contentious

Philippine politics, Senator and Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Manny Villar graciously and adamantly conceded his bid for the presidency to gallantly give way to the emergent frontrunner and President-elect Benigno Aquino III in the 2010 polls. Bearing his trademark integrity, unshakeable confidence and noble mission and resolve to move forward, reunite and rebuild the country, Mr. Sipag and Tiyaga (hardwork & dedication) aims to cooperate grassroots p programs g for mobilizing g entrepreneurship p p among g the with the new administration and continue his g country’s marginalized sector. Beyond the presidential campaign, Villar’s sheen and luster as an icon among the masses for his rags to riches story remains. Villar hailed from the streets of Tondo and at an early age, helped his mother sell seafood at the Divisoria market in order to support his siblings and himself to school. Upon graduating from the University of the Philippines with a degree in Business Administration he worked as an accountant and financial analyst of various multinational companies. Proving his mettle in business and entrepreneurship, he left the corporate world and established the largest homebuilding company Crown Asia and shopping malls – Starmalls, starting from an initial capital of P 10,000,000. 10 000 000 Villar’s foray into politics proved successful as well when he was elected congressman of Las Pinas and Muntinlupa in 1992 and re-elected in the next two terms, consistently posting landslide victories. He was chosen as Speaker of the House of Representatives in 1998. Villar was elected Senator of the Republic in 2001 and assumed the Senate presidency during the 3rd regular session of the 13th Congress in July, 2006 with the staunch support of the majority of his colleagues. He was the previous Senate pro-tempore and held the chairmanship of the committees on Finance, Foreign Relations, Public Order and Agriculture & Fisheries. He is the first post-war public official who became both the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the Senate President, and the President of the Nacionalista Party.
