Playing it safe is not part of Jessica Maloles’ vocabulary. Out of her comfort zone, she continuously pushes herself to excel in various fields while maintaining a harmonious family life. She lives and leads by the philosophy that there is an innate power that resides in her which enables her to affect positive change. This confidence and drive for achievement is deeply-rooted in her younger days. She recalls that she has always been an outstanding student even though she worked while she studied. Recently clinching the beauty queen title of 2014 Mrs. Asia International 1st Runner Up is part of her multi-faceted accomplishments. As a businesswoman, Jessica is the CEO of Maloles Estate. She nurtures her relationships with her associates and clients but never flinches at improving management dynamics and enhancing revenues by challenging accepted ways of doing things, making tough decisions and implementing changes.

With all her triumphs, Jessica remains humble and generous. “I’m golden hearted and down to earth, as my friends have told me,” she said. She considers her family as one of her most important achievements in life and she’s proudest of her five children. Jessica is not resting on her laurels though, she’s got her eyes set on establishing a trading business and she’s planning to become a lawyer in the near future. With courage, persistence and faith in God, Jessica shall no doubt continue to break through the barriers of what a woman could achieve and inspire others with her success.

Forest House was born of a concept to capture the very essence of Baguio City. A Baguio restaurant that feels like a Baguio restaurant. A place to escape the harshness of reality and take time out for a breath of fresh air … a place where you can sit back, relax, over a cup of freshly brewed coffee as you pine the hours away … a place where you gather with friends and relatives to celebrate special occasions or just celebrate life itself… a place you call home. The warm and cozy ambiance is one of kind that will keep you glued to your chairs as you listen to Baguio’s best musical talents serenade you with their repertoire of jazz, classics, standards and probably even your favorite songs to reminisce by. Service is above par to compliment our international and local cuisine. Bagnet, an Ilocano pork dish, is the house special and is a must try, but the staff would be more than glad to assist you with your preference. And after a heavy meal, a wide variety of pastries and our very own bottomless Forest House coffee, perfect blends of Benguet Arabica, awaits you. Forest House … a trip to Baguio would not be complete without a visit.

A
n incandescent sight through the mist, it is not far-fetched to see Lorna Fernando Engelbach appearing with the serene presence of her distinctly Asian charisma and regal bearing in perhaps the fairytale-like castle Schloss Neuschwanstein, the French Gothic-styled KÜlner Dom, Frederick the Great’s summer palace Schloss Sanssouci or any centuries-old architectural marvels of Germany. Lorna is very much at home in Das Land der Dichter und Denker where she has a loving family that keeps her happy, a sense of fulfillment in her business life, and the spirit of adventure in exploring the fascinating art, culture, history, modernity and cuisine of Germany and other nearby places in Europe particularly Milan, Paris, Amsterdam and Madrid. Making the most of weekends or vacations and satisfying her inner vagabond nature, she also enjoys spending time with friends in cafes, dance clubs and shopping arcades while discovering new places, different cultures, or just driving around the wineries in the Rhineland Palatinate area. She appreciates beauty in all its forms. In her home, she has a small but rare collection of monastery "Thangkas" paintings. Each piece takes a few months to years to complete and depicts scriptures of the Bodhisattva, that is spiritual, philosophical and most importantly, radiates positivity. With a keen sense of artistry beginning in her youth, she injected creativity in her movements as a model on the ramp and balanced it with her free-spirited escapades with her model friends off the catwalk. She remembers the numerous and priceless stories of fun and excitement, sense of humor and zest for life that made all the difference from day to night, from pan de sal to champagne, from t-shirt and shorts to haute couture. During her modeling days, she grew especially fond of Hongkong at the time when it was still part of the British Colony in the 80s. She felt the vibrant energy of little New York with the fast-paced business cycle by day and pulsating night life. It was a very special place that served as the backdrop where she met her husband.

There was never a dull moment in her days in HongKong, she also frequently entertained designers, models and friends scouting for textile materials, accessories, as she knew all the corners and the secret back alleys. She enjoyed the vivacious night life and knew the best international chefs in town. Nowadays, she remains elegant and sophisticated. Her signature style is composed of elegant, sexy and comfortable elements. Depending on her mood for the day or evening, she wears urban chic dress, skinny pants with a designer blouse, trendy sport clothing, or "naughty-playful" wear. Accessories are part of her wardrobe staples to complete the look with the right choice of jewelry, shoes and handbag.
IMAGESASIA 19 Despite her wanderlust and modern woman ways, she and her family often returns to her hometown in Davao City where she enjoys lounging at the neighboring private and idyllic beaches. Her son Heiner is raised in Germany and has recently finished college studies and completed a real estate internship in Manila. Like his mother, if you ask Heiner directly where his heart lies, he will definitely say it’s the Philippines. With her countless achievements, her next big dream is to build a dream house on the beach in the Philippines where she and her loved ones can visit during the winter and summer break from Europe and bask in the sun. In everything, Lorna’s secret to the good life is valuing the little gems of joy tucked in every experience.

Anna Lorraine Kier Tabora became the Binibining Pilipinas Universe back in 1977 when she was only 16, a distinction that she considers one of the two most memorable experiences of her life. It seems that she has this innate attraction for being exceptional and special because the other memorable experience of her life was when she gave birth to her second child, her first daughter, during the Killer Quake of July 16, 1990. This birth, which happened inside a van, in between 2 pine trees, was the first recorded birth in Baguio after the quake. A product of the well Karilagan modeling group of the late Conching Sunico, Anna is known for her classic, elegant and comfortable fashion style. Thus, to this day, she never fails to turn heads with her style and elegant beauty. Anna is one of the lucky few to have stared death in the eye, having been diagnosed with thyroid papillary cancer not too long ago. She underwent an operation and has been declared cancer free. Beating cancer has taught her to view life with a renewed meaning. Seeing all the small blessings that others tend to overlook, and appreciating the more simple things in life. She also sees each day not just as a blessing for herself, but also as another opportunity to give back to others. Anna was born in Baguio to a Danish father and a Filipina mother . She credits her parents for molding her character by teaching her to always remain humble and grounded. She recounts that they constantly remind her that she would be remembered best because of a good heart. She graduated from Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and was hoping to pursue Law. However, life had other plans for her as she met her husband the day after graduation and they were wed a year later. She has an overwhelming desire to continually educate herself and was in fact pursuing a Masteral degree in Development Management when cancer reared its ugly head forcing her to take a leave from her studies. She hopes to resume her education sometime next year when she can claim complete healing.

IMAGESASIA 25 This bout with cancer has altered her view about life and she values time even more today, seeing every second as a golden opportunity to improve and change life for the better. In addition to this, because of what she knows about how stress and worries can affect one’s health, she has resolved to give all her cares and worries to God by giving Him her full and complete trust. This is how she starts and ends her day. Despite all her worldly achievements, Anna is most proud of her 3 children and is now a doting grandmother to her only granddaughter (at the moment). Her eldest son Nicho is an Industrial Engineer, followed by Anica who is a Biomedical Engineer. Her youngest daughter Diandra is a graduate of Advertising Management. Her children are Anna’s anchor and they are responsible for her love of life. For her, the pinnacle of her life would be to see her children and grandchildren enjoying success and a happy life. A loving mother indeed and this love for her children can be seen in the items she loves to collect which are memorabilia from or related to her children such as letters, paintings and photos. She also collects items and photos during her travels around the world.

Family is a very important part of her life and despite having met so many people from all around the world, her mother is the person she admires the most. Among the traits she admires the most in her mother are her zest for life, spunk, selflessness and her unconditional love. Miriam Defensor Santiago comes in second to her mother in her list. Anna admires Miriam’s brilliance, braveness, fearlessness and her ability to engage and entertain wherever she speaks,

Anna keeps her slim and sexy figure by going to the gym whenever time permits. She makes it a point to maximize this time, spending as much as 2 hours in order to get a complete workout. Never one to let an empty nest reduce her zest for life, Anna is busy with her events management business ANNAfffairsInc and she has also been reconnecting with her old friends from Karilagan and the entertainment world. Its quite a pleasant surprise to hear that despite being very well travelled, the places Anna loves the most are in the Philippines. Boracay is one of those where she enjoys the festive ambiance despite the advent of commercialism. But the place she loves the most is Baguio, the place where she was born, where she grew up and where she lives to this day. For her, there is no other place in the country that can compare to the air and weather in the City of Pines. Moreover, life in Baguio is both easy and less stressful and perhaps most important, it is full of priceless memories.

Alta also, recently opened a Resto-bar called Locavore, which is fast gaining its popularity in Kapitolyo, Pasig. She proudly shares that her philosophy in life is to always be positive. She continuously reminds herself that what consumes the mind controls your life. Although fascinated with things that shines and sparkles such as diamonds and jewelries, she admits that one cannot purchase all the best things in life. She rather maintains a collection of sparkles of happiness in her eyes whenever she gives joy to people around her. According to those closest to Anna, she is a headstrong woman, ambitious and full of perseverance. She enthuses that her greatest achievement is still in the works as she aims to see her grandchildren turn out as wonderful and successful as their mothers.
IMAGESASIA 33
Her style icon is former First Lady Imelda Marcos, for her sophisticated taste, her strength and her appreciation of arts and refinements in every detail of life. Anna enjoys shopping and going out with her good friends for lunches and dinners but proudly muses that her seven grandchildren occupy her world the most and having them around is most entertaining of all.

34 She feels wonderful to go to the beach with her family. Locally she picks Boracay as her favorite, for her it is not difficult to fall in love with the place’s powdery sands, clear waters and lingering horizons. Her international choice though is Prague. She finds it as one of the most beautiful places she has seen in her life. She effusively shared that Prague’s breath-taking surreal structures and castles will surely make it an unforgettable bucket list. Having one of the most beautiful faces in the social circle, Anna’s best beauty secret is that there is no secret at all, she claims that happiness brings out the beauty in every person.
