EDITOR’S WELCOME NOTE
The 3rd issue of Images Asia casts an
unfamiliar eye to the familiar and provokes readers to gain sensitivity to the world through the looking glass of artful photography and writings of contributors. To refresh the spirit, each page convey an art form in reference to one of Latin America’s most significant authors, Mario Vargas Llosa in his novel Way to Paradise illuminating on French Post-Impressionist Paul G Gaugin i who h accomplished li h d greatt works k despite d it the th obstacles, “ Art had to break free from its narrow mold, from the tiny horizon to which it had been confined by the artists, critics, academics, and collectors…; it had to open up to the world, mix with other cultures, expose itself to other winds, other landscapes, other values, other races, other beliefs, other ways of living and thinking. Only then it would it recover the power that the y, frivolous,, materialistic life … had leeched from soft,, easy, it.” Correspondents and photographers collaborated on the power of art delineated by Mario Vargas Llosa. Equipped with modern and state of the art cameras and lenses, the team further took inspiration from Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer, master of subject treatment and lighting. On the feature of Bohol, the snapshots radiated the lapis lazuli or genuine ultramarine hues as part of the photographer’s artistic palette. It is speculated that Vermeer utilized the camera obscura in his paintings to simplify the complexities of the composition and produce a halo effect. This technique vividly captured the glint of the eyes and subtle transitions of light which unveils the soul within the subject matter particularly the cover model Ms. Lani Schoof as well as other luminaries and achievers featured in this issue. Writers employed the impasto technique to highlight only the essence and unique character of multi-dimensional personalities. Philoshoper Kahlil Gibran emphasized, “Art is a step from what is obvious and well-known toward what is arcane and concealed.” Readers are welcome to reflect upon the visual tour de force and reignite their senses to the refreshing renditions of art in this contemporary media.

His father, a teacher has taught p , hardwork and the ppassion to adamantlyy ppursue his dreams. him discipline, To visit the different places around the globe, Ambassador Legowo originally had his heart set on becoming a pilot, however, he learned that he could not move forward with this vocation since he had to wear glasses. Thus, upon earning a Bachelor’s degree in Social and Political Science major in International Relations at the University of Gadja Mada in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, he took a 1-year diplomatic course in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia and deliberately chose to be a diplomat. His determination to follow his ultimate goals had led to more than satiating his curiosity for discovering different cultures across the seas, it has led him to the privilege of representing his country, enhancing its socio-political relations with other nations and promoting its rich heritage, economic growth and security through ASEAN, NonAligned Movement (NAM), Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) and United Nation’s Security Council, PBC (Peace Building Commission) and Climate Change Conference. I have learned a lot of things because almost every day, I am involved in various levels of negotiations,” he stated. He then served as the Deputy Chief of Mission in the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Canberra, Australia, which is one of the important neighbors of Indonesia, prior to his appointment in the Philippines. For his success in international diplomacy, he looks up to his country’s late Ali Alatas, former Foreign Minister for elevating Indonesia’s foreign policy and Former Foreign Minister, N. Hassan Wirajuda. “Both taught me how to make the right decisions at the right time and the right place. They also taught me to make accurate judgment on situations that would affect the national interest of the Republic of Indonesia,” Ambassador Legowo expounded. Being a family man and a devoted Catholic, he is happy that his wife and children are supportive of his calling and when time permits they spend time together to go to church, play musical instruments and engage in sports such as tennis and golf. Most importantly, just like his father, Ambassador Legowo hands over the invaluable and greatest legacy to his children --- to be sensitive to the needs of others, serve one’s country and staunchly follow one’s vision in life.

DREAMS OF FLIGHT John Michael Yeo
Photographs: MJ CACHERO
IMAGESASIA 18
At first glance, he can be mistaken for a Korean pop star and one of the boy band members of Super Juniors, jettisoning on a private jet, sporting a sleek haircut and avant-garde futuristic pop outfit, strutting fancy moves on stage and stealing the hearts of teenage admirers around the world. Cut to reality, John Michael Yeo is the boy-next-door type, the flight attendant turned commercial pilot in training who flies and explores the continents in his own terms with the levity, curiosity and spontaneity of his youth. Seemingly inspired by St. Augustine who stated that world d iss a boo book,, andd those ose w who o do not o travel ve read e d oonly y a ppage, ge, thee wo when John was growing up, he had already set his eyes on taking a voyage on distant shores. Being a precocious child, John borrowed the globe given as a gift to his brother and went on for days and months to locate every country and memorize its capital on it. In high school, he was an active boy scout and joined the jamboree in Virginia USA and Aukland, New Zealand. The experience gave John a taste of independence and the joy of venturing to new places and engaging in diverse cultures. Determined to achieve his goals, John eventually took on the role of a flight attendant on board Air Philippines to go to one prime tourist spot in the Philippines to the other. He transferred to Qatar Airways to discover Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East for 3 years. Throughout his international flight experience, he counts London, France and HongKong as his top three destinations. “Contrary to general perception, working as a Cabin Crew requires a lot of patience and customer focus. Together with the cabin team, we endure long flights and extreme weathers. It is not all glamour. Inside that metal tube, 30,000 feet above the ground, the crew does everything for the passengers’ well-being,” noted John. On the adventurous side, John recalls an unforgettable trip to Kathmandu, Nepal. “My crew went rafting in the mountains. It was an exhilarating feeling but nothing beats the experience on the way back to the Hotel. Hotel Since we forgot to book transportation services, we had to take the bus used by the locals. The bus was packed to the brim and we ended up nestled on top of it with other passengers and to add to the once in a lifetime experience, it rained on our 4-hour bus ride!” John can’t seem to get enough of the dreams of flying and the expeditions to far-flung places, he specialized in managing the production and marketing of wooden model aircraft for H Hawaiian ii Airlines, Ai li Th i Airways, Thai Ai A fl t KLM, Aeroflot, KLM Qatar Q t Airways, Ai Southwest Airlines and Philippine Airlines. Recently he has trained as a commercial pilot for Philippine Airlines, all set and geared up to become an airline captain pilot to take the world by the storm, up in the air.

MALAYSIAN KITCHEN PRINCE IN TOWN
A film of a vivid gastronomic dream
within a dream within a dream sequence wherein a couple seated at a quaint restaurant quaff the aroma of Ayam Masak Merah, transport them to Malacca right smack in the middle of a traditional Malacca, wedding revelry where they share the first bites of the exotic and flavorful dish and as they turn their heads to the cheers for casting good luck confetti and rice up in the air, the hundred little pieces turn to Kaffir leaves descending on a woven bamboo pan, and they find themselves running in a field of galangal, lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots, chilies, laksa leaf, turmeric, pandan, fennel, cumin and coriander, cloves, cardamom, star anise, mustard seeds, cinnamon and nutmeg as they track the path to the sea of batik, would be the turnout of Malaysian cuisine, had Hollywood director Christopher Nolan dabbled in its rich flavors and spices. In the kitchen of the Heritage Hotel, the palatable equivalent of a hit flick is directed by the Hotel Hotel’ss young and savvy Executive Chef Alex Chong who proudly wears the stripes of his Malaysian culture and lineage & various awards from his 15 years of experience in 5-Star Hotels across Asia, to render the multi-layers of tastes and textures to international cuisine at the Riviera Café. For his audacious experimentations and innovations incarnated in a fusion of Eastern and Western fare, fare he has earned the monicker kitchen prince among his peers. His holy-grail philosophy is bringing freshness to the table. He ensures that the freshest natural ingredients, prime meats and finest selection of vegetables are used for his secret recipes. .
Executive Chef Alex Chong

Competitive, creative and energetic, Chef Alex has won numerous awards for his culinary masterpieces. He was awarded the 2009 “God of Cookery” Top 10 Best of Executive Chefs Distinction in Shenzhen China, Shenzhen, China selected by the Malaysian Tourism Board to represent the country to the 2008 Malaysian Cultural Promotion in Hanoi. During his stint in Singapore, he and his kitchen team garnered the 2002 Silver and Bronze Award for Culinary Gourmet and Culinary Buffet category in the Food and Hotel Singapore International Competition. He specializes in Western and Asian fusion cuisine and well-versed in wine pairing. At the lunch and dinner buffer of the Riviera Café, Chef Alex added his magic touches and spices to the Hotel’s signature Laksa and Hainanese Chicken Rice. He introduced the “Wok with Me” corner, for fresh meats, poultry and vegetables to be grilled or sautéed in Thai, Cantonese, Malay or Western style and Malaysia’s best kept secret culinary wonder known as the seafood Lok-lok, it’s a shabu-shabu with a spectrum of skewered fresh seafood, fish balls, vegetables and quail egg laid out in a piping hot cauldron of herbs and spices and matched with choice of sauce. The piquancy of Chef Alex’s montage of Malaysian cuisine in a spread of international fare would have converted French Philosopher Jacques Lacan to trade cinema appreciation for culinary discourse that it’s an experience back to the womb, in the cradle of a delicious reverie.

kin to a long and extended summer, Marian exudes joy in her 55 years of a charmed life. She doesn’t shun her age, instead she effusively shares that her secret fountain of youth is no secret at all, naming her positive outlook in life, healthy lifestyle, love and happiness with her family and friends as the key ingredients to living and looking youthful. She divulged that although her contemporaries have gone under the knife with cosmetic surgery for tummy tucks and liposuction or out-patient treatment for botox and threading, she is thankful that she’s not tempted with the nip and tuck addiction and attributes her young-looking aura to 90% gym workouts and 10% non-invasive enhancements such as diamond peel every two months to minimize her freckles and radio frequency for firming her waist area together with a new line called calvitation courtesy of Dr. Melvin Cavalries. A double degree holder in Child Psychology and Interior Design, Marian in the prime of her youth reveled in her thriving catwalk gig as one of the models of Conching Sunico in the prestigious Karilagan International Modeling group that took her to local and international shows for two straight years. Her colleagues included Anna Kier, Tess G l Galang, and d Melanie M l i Marquez. M At the crossroads of her life, she had to choose between love or prestige. Treading a new road to bliss wasn’t an easy decision, instead of vying for a Binibining Pilipinas title which her sister earlier clinched, she said yes to a happy married life with Ramon Paraiso. As a result, she is a proud mother to three grown-up children namely Paolo Paraiso, p Paraiso,, Trade Maketing g at a p private firm & model,, Dimples print ad model and Bubbles Paraiso, model/actress. In her contented family life, Marian seem to have discovered eternal youth. Her lasting glow is one of a cheerful heart and spirit, generous enough to spread gladness.
