Hans Schoof
Bohol’s Noble Godfather Photographs: MJ CACHERO

O
nce Hans Schoof casted his gaze on the most beautiful pair of eyes he has ever seen at a chance encounter during his stopover in Manila, where he simply intended to iron out his documentations at the Embassy, somehow he knew that the sweet serendipity of the zephyr winds has carried him to the pinnacle of his epic quest of romance and adventure in his circumnavigation of the world. As Eros was irrepressibly drawn to Psyche, Psyche the German-born Hans at the prime of his youth was captivated with the allure and charms of Lani Jubac and her native town of Bohol. In this chapter of his exploration of the globe, the east meets west fascination became a marriage in paradise. Hans and his spouse Lani raised their children Katrina Christel Marie and Frederick Christian in an atmosphere of affection. A devoted family , Hans shard his passion for travelling to his hometown in Weisbaden, Germany, across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. As a testament of Han’s love for his spouse and children, he has adopted the Philippines as his own homeland, flies to and from their plush residences in Manila and Baclayon, Bohol, had operated Heidelberg restaurant specializing in German cuisine, one of the most popular dining places in Malate in its time and recently built the world-class Peacock Luxury Resort & Spa in Baclayon, Bohol. Hans is considered as honorary Filipino by the locals of Bohol for his numerous contributions to the community. y He has donated computers to public elementary schools, contributed medicine to health centers, organized medical missions to those in need, set up microcredit to spur entrepreneurship among the less privileged and indigenous groups, promoted eco-tourism such as bird watching on the northern part of the island and conservation of the mangroves and acted as the city/s international representative for initiatives to curb global warming and climate change. He works closely with the local government for implementation of various socio-civic socio civic projects and marketing of Bohol as a key tourist destination in the country. In one of the balmy afternoons overlooking the phosphorescent and turquoise sea of Bohol, one can get immersed and refreshed in Han’s oceans of erudite musings on philosophy, history and countless tales of his voyage across continents that presaged his blissful heaven on earth zip code. Over the bold and rich flavors of his favorite Portuguese Port wine sourced from the docks of Madera island nearby the winery of the Duro valley and in between puffs of the aromatic tobacco imported from Dominican Republic, Hans garbed in a dapper Rajo Laurel bowtie accenting his collared white polo shirt and slightly rolled up sleeves expounds on his universal independent and freethinking accomplishments and visions.

He recounts that as a young man he was influenced by his parents in the era of post-WWII post WWII’ss restoration ad renewal to embrace peace and tolerance for multi-ethnic diversity. His late father was well-loved in their town and Hans has taken to heart the wise words of wisdom that in this life one should live and let live by providing others a means of livelihood. Hans’ colorful journey from his hometown and halfway across the planet was originally inspired by Nobel Peace Prize Winning author Ernest Hemingway in his exploration of cultures and civilizations. An avid collector, Hans has a photo of the Cuban fisherman Gregorio Fuentes on the walls of his smoking room, the man was one of the basis of Hemingway’s main protagonist in his highly-acclaimed novel The Old Man and the Sea. In the exciting conquests of his youth, Hans travelled with a German doctor, a Dutch sculptor and other freethinkers. Taking odd jobs, hitchhiking, hopping on bus, trains and boats, he was able to discover for himself the caves of the Minoan civilizations in Crete, watch the sunset p , sleep p with only y p provisions of overlookingg the Acropolis, blanket at the Parthenon when it was not yet cordoned off from tourists, run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain, traverse and break bread with the locals in the Middle East particularly Turkey; Iran; Khabul, Afganistan; Israel; Pakistan; Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta, India and as well as in Southeast Asian cities of Singapore; Bangkok, Thailand and Manila, Philippines. A staunch history buff, Hans naturally became an expert on Jose Rizal, Rizal the national hero that linked Germany and the country. He became an active member of the Knights of Rizal in Wilhelberg, Heidelberg. For his outstanding contributions, the Hack-Ullmer family granted him the antique furniture that was used by Jose Rizal during his stay in Germany circa 1886. To further propagate Rizal’s progressive writings, Han’s commissioned the translation and publication of El Filibusterismo in German language. To maintain a balance in his varied interest, recharge after his adventures and juggle quality time with family and business, as a universal man Hans is a skilled marksman who practices target shooting only with rubber trajectories to ensure that equilibrium of nature is maintained.

Other bestsellers include the famous Butter Rhum Bundt, Mango Cheesecake and Walnut Raisin Oat Cookies, Sans Rival, Chocolate Fudge Cake, Black Forest and Blueberry Cheesecake. Recalling the prequel of success, Becky was originally emboldened by her teaching stint at the Philippine Institute of Bakers and Technology and Livelihood Research Center (TLRC) and the success of her private kitchen concoction of a fantastic fruitcake recipe which sold among close family and friends. Until now, she is pleasantly surprised that her little experimentations in the kitchen warmed up cockles of countless hearts on and off holidays. Proust would have indeed given her sweet creations a fitting tribute to memories of yuletide past, present and precognitions of f t future straight t i ht outt off his hi novel, l “ I raised i d to t my lips li a spoonful f l off the th tea t in which I had soaked a morsel of the cake. No sooner had the warm liquid, and the crumbs with it, touched my palate than a shudder ran through my whole body, and I stopped, intent upon the extraordinary changes that were taking place… at once the vicissitudes of life had become indifferent to me, its disasters innocuous, its brevity illusory…”

ne off the h world’s ld’ most renownedd French F h novelist Marcel Proust recognized for trailblazing the stream-ofconsciousness flair in his autobiographical novel A La Recherche Du Tem Perdu (Remembrance of Things Past), could have immortalized the walnut fudge brownies and other treats of Becky’s Kitchen in his works to reflect the recurring childhood memories of holiday cheers, if he had been in Manila and had the chance to sink his teeth in the signature decadent treats. Proust would have alluded to Becky’s Kitchen specialty desserts as the key to transporting one to the blissful experience of hearing the melodies of chuclking school children fresh from a school break, the kaleidoscopic and twinkling yuletide lanterns and the sweet scents and flavors permeating the cool air across P. Ocampo drawing throngs of eager holiday shoppers young and old alike to the nondescript nook where a favorite auntie with flour dusted and vanilla and chocolate sprinkled apronn busily conjures j i irresistible i tibl home-made h d andd kitchen kit h tested t t d goodies di fresh f h from the oven. It was during the season of gift-giving for more than two decades ago when Becky Villegas, the lady behind the eponymously named specialty bakery and café, decide to venture and open her doors for the holiday revelers with an affinity to saccharin to simply sample her students’ baked delights at her ancestral home. However, those who took a bite of Becky’s gourmet goodies as Christmas gifts were simply enamored for tasting a slice of heaven and instantly converted into loyal followers. Soon enough, the crowd that flocked to Becky’s homey neighborhood bakeshop grew and the queue for the holidays matches the line at a blockbuster film. Word of mouth got into that irresistable Word-of-mouth confections are available at Becky’s unassuming ancestral home turned bakeshop and demand snowballed annually. Expansion of the kitchen was implemented. From a lean staff of two, there are now 30 kitchen personnel behind the scene. Becky also opened a new branch at their Valle Verde residence, a portion of which is turned into a café highlighting a sweet and savory gastronomic menu with a Filipino deli selection for balikbayans. Through it all, Becky never wavered on quality, consistency and innovations to delight patrons. The most popular among Becky’s signature cakes are (Prune Walnut, Swiss Chocolate and Coffee Cream), famous pastry selection (Lemon Squares, Fudge Brownies, Cherry Walnut Bars, Food for the Gods) and loaves of Butter and Holiday Prune Cakes.

ocused and courageous, Frederick “Chris” Christian Schoof, in his 20s, wades into the sea of challenges for being the next generation executive to run the family-owned Peacock Garden Luxury Resort. Although he was initially bent on pursuing further studies in Melbourne after college, he decided to move back to Bohol to oversee the concerns on his father’s health and reinvigorate the luxury resort’s operations. Chris soaked up Bohol’s tourism environment and learned the ropes of the trade from his father and mentor Hans. Akin to the new breed of young and talented businessman who are continuing the feats of their respective fathers, the Trumps in the U.S. real estate. The Bertarellis in European paharmaceutical industry and the Tantocos in Manila’s upscale retail marketing, Chris understands the importance of leadership succession in business in the persona of his father and values the guidance and support. support He considers starting out young as his competitive advantage in running the luxury resort. This echoes the principle highlighted in the New –York Times best-selling non-fiction book Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell wherein case studies of triumphant artists, athletes and businessmen attributed their off the charts victories to the 10,000-hour rule equivalent to 20 hours a week for 10 years practice in a particular field. Aside from youthful energy and chutzpah, Chris noted that it takes skills, strategy, cunning and alliances with key business partners for the luxury resort to thrive and expand. He is keen on sustaining the momentum his father has started. Formerly the Head of Operations, and now the General Director of Peacock Garden Luxury Resort, he takes a non-linear approach to business. He has set the new guidelines to integrate the resort brand identity and enhance operations for greater efficiency. To forge strong business relations, Chris is a Member of the Bohol Chamber of Commerce and Board Member of Philippine Management Association of the Philippines, Bohol Chapter. He also actively works with the local government to promote eco-tourism in Bohol.
