Montreal Canadiens “I can’t really hear what Jeremy [Roenick] says because I got my 2 stanley cup rings plugged in my ears”-Patrick Roy
Since I was a kid I have always cheered for the Montreal Canadiens. The organization has changed a lot since I first started watching them but there are a few guys left I grew up watching. Like most fans you feel something special well watching the game. The Habs franchise is the most historical franchise in the league being around for over 100 years and holding the record of the most Stanley cups at 24. The organization has the most hall of famers and having more then three trophies named after people within the organization. The Montreal organization does a lot for their fans and the people who support them. The team holds many events for fans either on ice team games, practices or summer events. The Habs also do a lot in the community for those who are sick, with cancer or other diseases. Why I think I relate to the organization is because, they are the best hockey team in the world, always have been and always will be. Not saying I’m the best but I played hockey and ball hockey for one of the best teams in Ontario, Canada and the world.
“I felt like an outsider. The only time you get to really know guys is on the ice, and I couldn’t be there.”- Saku Koivu while fighting cancer. “My relationship and the bond with the people in Montreal was kind of special and doesn’t happen very often.” -Saku Koivu
Saku Koivu
“During my cancer treatments, I never thought about what would happen with hockey. It was more important just to survive and beat the disease. Since then, I’m allowing myself to enjoy life and hockey more, even if the game has lost a ton of its meaning and importance in my life.” Saku Koivu
Saku was born in Finland on November 23, 1974. He was drafted by Montreal in 1993 and played his first game in 1995. In 1999 he was named the captain of the Canadiens for the next ten years. Koivu played 14 years in a Habs jersey before being let go on free agency and was later picked up by the Ducks. All fans praise the Habs captain, Koivu was an outstanding leader for the Habs and even though he never brought us a Stanley Cup he was still one of the best habs to play the game. In 2001 on his way back from Finland with a team mate Saku started to feel sick and was vomiting, so he went to the team doctor, and after several test Koivu was diagnose with with Burkitt’s lymphoma, a non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer). After missing most of the 01/02 season battleing cancer he returned to lead the habs once again. I admire Koivu for many reasons, from the way he played with so much heart, to beating cancer to the way he talked about the fans. I feel I relate very close to Koivu because he small like me and plays the same game style as me also. In the summer of 2013 I was being tested for all sorts of problems and I think he was a big inspiration for me.
