Initial Thoughts

Concept:

We started by discussing things that we would want to make this flag. We wanted to be different and stand out either by it changing or being interactive. We thought of using different materials to just printing it out on fabric and how this could be used with processes to create something visually amazing.

Using four different patterns formed from various elements of nature we would stencil wood and marble around the patterns.

We shared what has inspired us recently. These seemed to work well together because of the visual results being patterns which are nature related.

Development The four chosen patterns represented land, sea, sky and us through a tree, a fingerprint, fish scales and wings of a fly. We hand rendered these patterns tracing over images we sourced ready to vinyl cut them out. This vinyl will be applied to the wood to create a stencil to marble over.

Production We translated the hand rendered patterns to vector files which we then cut out on the vinyl. We carefully peeled away the negative of the pattern leaving only the stencil. This was applied to tacky plastic sheets which would allow us to transfer the vinyl onto the wood sheets.

Experimentation As we had never marbled before we played around with colours and stocks trying to create different tones and patterns. We found some really successful techniques through our trialling to get the colours and patterns we were after. They came out really earthy and looked like satellite images of earth from above. This really suited our concept of nature.

Final Piece We transferred the vinyl to the A2 pieces of birch white ply wood. After sampling with a small bit of scrap wood we used our knowledge from our experiments to choose a select few colours, changing the intensity each time to get different patterns and tones. We then dipped these in the marbling ink and left them to dry. Once dry we peeled away the vinyl stencil to reveal the pattern.
