Let’s talk about art. Inside Northside isn’t an art publication per se, even though we feature artwork on our cover and an artist profile in each issue. We’re a lifestyle publication that features art, appreciates art, and supports art in a region with a rich artistic heritage.

I became a little obsessed with this month’s cover artist Blake Boyd when I first saw his gilded bunny in Danny Saladino’s gallery. Since then, I’ve had the immeasurable pleasure of adding a pair of Blake’s swans to my collection. And every single day, I walk past this incredible artwork and I smile. Knowing Blake’s story and understanding how his art is created connects me to these pieces in ways I can’t fully express.

To me, art is a vital component of our human experience. It connects us to our emotions, challenges our perceptions, and invites us to see the world through different lenses. Whether it’s the visual arts, music, literature, or performance, art has the power to inspire, heal, and bring communities together.

Art encourages us to slow down and appreciate the beautiful things about life. It fosters creativity and critical thinking, pushing us to explore new ideas and perspectives. Art adds depth and meaning to our surroundings, turning ordinary places into spaces of reflection, inspiration, and joy.

Support the artists wherever you find them. In galleries, on the stage, at the bookstores, at the pop-up markets, in the schools, and in your homes. They are an essential element in our world, grounding us, reminding us of our connections with the rest of the universe.

master of Icons and Mediums:

Disney and Star Wars are in Blake Boyd’s blood, as is his art—literally. He paints these iconic subjects in a myriad of mediums, sometimes using his own blood, infusing his work with a deeply personal and unique connection to the themes he explores.

For Boyd, these subjects hold deeper meanings; he draws parallels between his life and the protagonists of his favorite films. In Boyd’s New Orleans home, an imposing portrait rendered in blood on a stark white clay background features the iconic helmet of Darth Vader. “A portrait of my father,” he tells me with a smirk. Boyd panalogizes his own

Blake

Boyd’s Triumphant Return to the New Orleans Art World

life to that of Luke Skywalker, his father, the redeemed Vader, and the Emperor? That is Boyd’s secret to tell.

Boyd has led a remarkable life, becoming something of a Forrest Gump of the art world, always managing to be in the most interesting place with the most important people at exactly the right time.

Shortly after his 16th birthday, Boyd, who grew up in Slidell, went to Hollywood to get discovered, aiming to become the literal protagonist in movies, and turn his passion for film into a career. In his first days in Los

Angeles, Boyd met and photographed Johnny Carson. This first portrait of Carson, taken by a teenage Boyd, launched his career in art photography and inspired a number of projects, including “The Photobooth Projects,” “The Polaroid Projects,” and the critically acclaimed “Louisiana Cereal” series. For Louisiana Cereal, Boyd would go on to meet and photograph over 600 important New Orleanians and even captured Brad Pitt at the height of his fame in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Boyd recently moved back to New Orleans after living in London for the last decade.

However, he isn’t new to the New Orleans art scene. In fact, Boyd, a native Louisianian, is steeped in and helped define the lively contemporary art scene of the City.

After Boyd’s short-lived, week-long stint in Hollywood, Boyd returned home when the father of Louisiana contemporary art, George Dunbar, came calling. Boyd’s own father, who studied art in college and had served as a studio assistant to Dunbar for five years before going into construction, asked Boyd to return home because he had a life-changing surprise for him. Boyd thought the surprise was an antique MG he had been eyeing as a first car. Instead, Dunbar offered Boyd a position as his apprentice, and for the next 15 years, Boyd’s life and work were intertwined with Dunbar’s, helping him render the gilded and clay-painted masterpieces for which Dunbar earned critical acclaim.

Under Dunbar, Boyd perfected the fine art of gilding, and make no mistake, Boyd is a perfectionist. Indeed, the gold and palladium leaf with underlying layers of clay seen in Boyd’s work have their origins in Dunbar’s studio. However, the styles of the two artists, their subjects, work, and indeed their lives, could not be more different.

Even while working with Dunbar, Boyd advanced his own artistic projects and was an impressive artist in his own right with a wide ranging media, from photography and videography, to performance and fine art. Boyd’s first Gallery show, at the age of 19, was in the Miriam Walmsley Gallery on North Peters. One year later, at age 20, he began to show at the storied Hall-Barnett Gallery on Exchange Place, which once served as the studio and gallery of famed Louisiana artist Alexander John Drysdale.

Boyd managed to meet his artistic heroes, even becoming the subject of artwork by his mentor, one of the most well-known artists in the world, Andres Serrano. Serrano is best known for his depiction of a crucifix photographed in his own urine known as Immersion (Piss Christ), a provocative piece meant to evoke the serious and grotesque nature of the crucifixion.

COVER ARTIST

Boyd met Serrano at a benefit at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans, and they began a friendship that has included years of collaboration and a mutual love of collecting Renaissance furniture, which now provides a glorious juxtaposition to Boyd’s work in his New Orleans home.

Serrano participated in gallery shows with Boyd, and Boyd, as a subject of Serrano’s work, was plastered on billboards and promotional materials around the world. In that way, Boyd had become the protagonist of his adolescent dreams, photographed by arguably one of the most important fine art photographers to ever live.

Boyd is a student of Andy Warhol and the pop art movement as much as he is a student of Dunbar and Serrano. Although he never had the opportunity to meet Warhol—whose studio, dubbed “The Factory,” served as a meeting place for visual artists, musicians, and celebrities of all kinds—Boyd was introduced to and spent time with the Factory’s illustrious manager Billy Name through Taylor Mead, the subject of many of Warhol’s works. Boyd and Name became fast friends and bonded over their expertise in running a studio. Name, Mead, and other notable Factory alumni became the subjects of Boyd’s work, with each traveling to Louisiana to be photographed by Boyd and styled for his “Photo Booth Projects,” a series of innovative portraits capturing the essence of his subjects through candid photography, staged absurdity, videography, and themed gallery openings.

Boyd’s work manages to transcend his artistic mentor’s styles while paying homage to the best of their artistic influences. Boyd’s artwork

stands as a compelling testament to the fusion of pop culture and personal expression, offering viewers a provocative lens through which to explore familiar cultural icons.

Boyd manages to pick up where Warhol left off, informed by ancient artistic methods that pre-date the Renaissance. Boyd renders subjects that defy conventions of beauty, juxtaposing the beautiful with the shocking, the innocent with the profane.

Boyd deftly navigates the landscape of contemporary pop culture, weaving iconic imagery with deeply personal and sometimes unsettling themes. His works often feature instantly recognizable figures such as Disney characters and Star Wars heroes, recontextualized in ways that challenge the viewer’s perceptions. This clever subversion transforms the familiar into something introspective and thought-provoking. By rendering Snow White in his own blood against a stark white background, he forces

the viewer to examine mortality while facing the ageless and iconic Disney princess.

Blood was traditionally used in the gilding process, and gilding was a medium employed primarily by the Catholic Church, royalty, and religious entities across the world. By rendering the icons of pop culture in blood and gold, Boyd shows both reverence for the subjects, elevating them to the status of a religion, while also connecting with something deeply personal and vulnerable in his art. The use of blood introduces a raw, corporeal element that contrasts sharply with the often whimsical or fantastical subjects he portrays.

Boyd also utilizes elements of street art, including graffiti, with bold, stylized letters and tagging with gilding and iconography to create a uniquely modern and spontaneous tableau. His works challenge conventional art forms while melding the best elements of old-world artistic beauty with the most

cutting-edge expressions of individualism and artistic technical skill.

Aesthetically, Boyd’s work oscillates between vibrant, saturated colors and more muted, somber tones, reflecting the duality of his thematic explorations. He engages with themes of identity, nostalgia, and the intersection of personal history with broader cultural narratives. By embedding elements of his own life and experiences into his work, Boyd invites viewers to consider the complex interplay between the public and the private, the real and the imagined.

Boyd’s art challenges the viewer to confront their own connections to the cultural icons he depicts as he explores his own relationships with those subjects. Through his innovative approach and bold use of materials, Boyd not only redefines the boundaries of portraiture and pop art but also elevates the conversation around the role of the artist as both creator and commentator. His work is a dialogue—a

constant negotiation between the past and present, the individual and the collective, the ordinary and the extraordinary, the iconic and the inconspicuous.

Boyd has not created a new painting in a decade. This artistic hiatus coincides with the diagnosis of early-onset dementia in the love of his life, Ginette Bone. A brilliant architect and professor, Bone has been much more than a life partner to Boyd; she has been his muse, his biggest fan, his Gallery Director, and a collaborator who profoundly influenced his world. Their romance served as the inspiration for Boyd’s wildly popular Swan series, which explores the inseparability of swans, who mate for life.

Bone’s diagnosis marked a turning point in Boyd’s life and work. The creative synergy that once fueled his artistic endeavors was deeply intertwined with their shared experiences and mutual inspirations. Her illness has created an emotional and artistic

void, leaving Boyd to navigate the challenges of caregiving while grappling with the cognitive loss of his creative companion.

The impact on Boyd’s life has been profound. His focus shifted from painting to supporting Bone through her journey, dedicating his time and energy to ensuring her well-being. This period has been one of introspection and adaptation, forcing Boyd to confront the fragility of memory and identity—themes that were once central to his work.

While Boyd’s brushes have remained untouched, his life has been filled with a different kind of creation: nurturing the bond between himself and Bone. In doing so, he continues to find inspiration in the quiet strength and enduring love they share, even as they face the challenges of her illness together. This experience has reshaped his perspective, offering a deeper understanding of the complexities of life, love, and art.

Even as he manages Bone’s condition, Boyd’s artistic career is poised for a remarkable comeback. His triumphant return to the Boyd Satellite gallery during White Linen Night, 2024, made him the art darling of New Orleans and the must-see show of the evening. Friends of the artist, including acclaimed artist Aron Belka and Jillian Gibson, donated their time to hang the visually stunning show, which Boyd titled, tongue-in-cheek, “Works from the Museum Collection: 1991-2014.”

The show became the talk of the town, drawing both art enthusiasts and critics, who hailed it with glowing acclaim. This event marked Boyd’s return to the New Orleans art scene and his departure, at least temporarily,

from the UK, Bone’s birthplace, which the two had called home for nearly a decade. His gallery representation with Saladino Gallery, in Historic Downtown Covington, has renewed excitement about Boyd’s potential resurgence as a creator.

With his canvases ready, Boyd speaks with renewed enthusiasm about diving back into his art, hinting at future works that might even feature iconic figures like the mouse himself. This renewed passion and creativity herald a new chapter for Boyd, promising fresh contributions to the already vibrant artistic tapestry of New Orleans and the greater art world.

Boyd’s artwork is a dynamic and challenging exploration of cultural identity and personal expression, masterfully blending the familiar with the unexpected to invite reflection and provoke thought. His unique approach to both medium and subject matter positions him as a significant figure in contemporary art, one whose work resonates with audiences seeking deeper connections to the icons that shape our cultural landscape.

Blake Boyd’s art is a testament to the power of blending personal history with cultural icons, creating works that challenge and engage viewers on multiple levels. His use of unconventional materials like his own blood, red wine, smooth clay under high gloss, and graffiti combined with ancient gilding techniques underscores the profound personal connection he has to his subjects.

As Boyd navigates new personal and artistic challenges, his return to the art world promises a comeback unlike anything the southern art scene has seen, reminding us all of the transformative power of art and the beauty it reveals in our lives.

On Sunday, Nov. 3, local “celebrity” cooks will partner with local restaurants to prepare tastings of their favorite dishes in a competitive cook-off. The goal is to win the coveted “People’s Choice” and “Judges Choice” awards, but more importantly, to raise the most money for Children’s Advocacy Center - Hope House, a nonprofit organization that provides hope, healing and justice for local child abuse victims.

Since its inception in 2014, Heroes Who Cook (formerly known as Men Who Cook) has become a popular and highly competitive showcase of the Northshore’s culinary scene. The event sold out in 2022 and saw its highest attendance ever in 2023. As its popularity has grown, so has the desire of community leaders to participate. For the first time ever, female community leaders were added to the 2023 celebrity roster, which led to a rebranding to “Heroes Who Cook” this year.

“These are incredible men and women in our community who are not only doing great things in business and government, but also standing with us in the local fight against child abuse and trafficking. To us and to the children we serve, they are heroes. Without them, Hope House would not be where it is today,” said Hope House Executive Director Thomas Mitchell.

Award winners are chosen in three categories. The “Most Money Raised” award is determined by an online fundraising campaign before the event. The “People’s Choice” award goes to the team who collects the most “tips” at the event. The “Judges Choice” award is determined by a blind tasting of each team’s featured dish at the event.

It gives me an opportunity to stand up for someone that can’t stand up for themselves and gives those children a voice. There is no greater gift than to be able to fight for the children of our community because they are our future.

Having the opportunity to participate in Hero's Who Cook, especially as a parent, means so much to me. I'm humbled to help support such an important need in our community. The Enduring Legacy of a Multi-Generational Business

We all inherit things from our parents and grandparents. It might be a piece of jewelry, a work of art, or something intangible like a sense of humor or a penchant for taking on lost causes. For the Northshore families in this story, their legacy is a vocation—a family business built and nurtured over generations, rooted in shared values, tradition, and commitment to success.

BRIAN, BRANDON, TOMMY, DONNY AND ROBERT BOUDREAUX OF BOUDREAUX’S JEWELERS

Boudreaux’s Jewelers has been a cornerstone of South Louisiana for nearly 90 years, with locations in Metairie, Mandeville, and Baton Rouge. Many locals likely have a ring, necklace, or watch that has been touched by the expertise and dedication of this family-owned business. The journey began in 1933 when Gilmore Boudreaux Sr., a skilled craftsman and jeweler, founded Boudreaux’s Jewelers in New Orleans. Operating out of a small studio in the Pere Marquette building, the business initially focused on providing service and repairs for stores across the Gulf South region. The company’s reputation for quality work quickly grew, leading to a successful expansion.

By 1956, Boudreaux’s had opened its first retail storefront on Baronne Street, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history. Gilmore’s sons, Don, Louis, and Gilmore Jr., joined the family business, bringing fresh energy and ideas that helped propel the company forward.

The tradition continued into the next generation. In 1985, Brian Boudreaux joined the company after studying gemology at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). By 1994, his siblings, Christy and Tommy, had also joined the family business, strengthening the Boudreaux legacy. The family saw a growing demand for high-end jewelry on the Northshore and responded by opening a Mandeville location in 1995. That same year, Donny Boudreaux brought his expertise to the business after a successful career in landscape architecture.

Brian’s oldest son, Brandon, joined the business in 2014 after completing his studies at GIA. His passion for jewelry design led him to train under Boudreaux’s master craftsmen, eventually taking on the role of Lead Designer. In 2018, Brian’s youngest son, Robert, also joined the family business, continuing the generational legacy.

“As a family, we take the responsibility of continuing our legacy very seriously,” said Brandon Boudreaux, reflecting on the company’s long history. “We’re carrying forward three generations of dedication and hard work.”

The family remains committed to staying true to the core values that have defined Boudreaux’s for generations. “Our goal is to

build on the strong foundations laid by those before us and to offer our clients the best jewelry selection and experience in Louisiana,” Brandon added.

The family’s nearly 90 years of service have fostered close relationships with local families, helping them celebrate milestones with the perfect piece of jewelry. Boudreaux’s Jewelers remains a trusted name in Louisiana, offering the finest quality diamonds and jewelry for generations to come.

LISA AND CONNOR PATRICK OF PAT’S SEAFOOD IN COVINGTON

It was 1965 when Ralph Patrick first opened his seafood store and restaurant in Metairie. From his home in Bucktown, he could wade right into the water and pick up softshell crabs. He cooked family recipes on his home stove then hauled them to his Veterans Boulevard shop to sell.

“Mr. Ralph was very social and a diligent worker,” said daughter-inlaw Lisa Patrick. “Whatever he set his mind to, he did. And he had a natural intuition for business.” Lisa says that intuition passed down to her husband, Ralph, Jr. (Ral), and their oldest child, Connor.

In the 70s, Ralph and Jean relocated to the Northshore and opened a restaurant, seafood market, and grocery store on Highway 190 in Covington. The Pat’s name was soon synonymous with seafood. “Although there wasn’t much competition back then, it was still a lot of work,” Lisa said. “Even on his day off, Ral usually went into work to do one thing or another.” Lisa says her husband seemed

FEATURE

to naturally understand the finesse involved in cooking seafood where a couple minutes here or there can mean the difference between success and failure.

Ral ran the business for the next 33 years, while Lisa raised their four kids, handled the books, and jumped behind the counter whenever she was needed. By the time he was 13, Connor was learning at his dad’s elbow. In 2022, Ral sadly lost his battle with cancer and the business passed into the hands of Lisa and Connor.

“Connor has the same intuition for business and understanding of seafood his father had,” Lisa said. “I can be the face of the business and can handle sales, but I couldn’t begin to do what he does.”

Connor is eager to breathe new life into the family business, too, and is considering many expansion ideas. “I’d like to create a crawfish boil type atmosphere where families and couples can come, enjoy some seafood, and hang out.”

ROB

OF ELMER’S CANDY IN PONCHATOULA

The year was 1855 when German immigrant Christoper Henry Miller launched a tiny candy company in New Orleans, Miller Candy Company. When his daughter married Augustus Elmer, they changed the name to Miller Elmer Candy Company and eventually dropped the Miller altogether. The company has been Elmer Chocolate Company ever since.

In 1923, they purchased the recipe for Heavenly Hash from a Canal Street confectioner and in 1936 developed the formula for Gold Brick Eggs. The two candies became their signature products and a staple of Easter celebrations throughout their small regional distribution area.

In 1962, a young Roy Nelson went to work at Elmer Chocolate and was eventually able to purchase the company from Mr. Elmer. It didn’t take him long to realize he didn’t possess the mechanical knowledge to keep his factory running like it should. He begged his

physicist son, Allan, to leave a promising career with McDonald Douglas and join him in the chocolate business. Together, they ran the family candy company from locations on Magazine Street and Tchoupitoulas.

With new ownership came new ideas and Allan had his sights set on expansion. After considering locations in Jefferson Parish and the Mississippi Gulf Coast, they relocated to the Northshore and built their

FEATURE

new factory in Ponchatoula in 1970. In a gesture of loyalty that’s hard to imagine these days, many of their employees chose to relocate with them. Some of those employees are still there today.

Rob and Michael Nelson remember skateboarding through the plant on the weekends when their dad made repairs on the machinery. By 1996, the third generation of Nelsons took over, when Rob became COO. Michael joined him in 2003 and Rob stepped into the CEO role when Allan retired.

With expansions in 2015 and 2016 to the tune of $45 million, they’re now producing and packaging five million pieces of candy a day (2,000 pieces a minute) with the help of 400 happy employees.

Over nearly 170 years, Elmer’s has grown from a tiny, regional candy company into the second largest heart-shaped boxed chocolate company in the country with distribution throughout North America and has earned the title “oldest family-owned chocolate company in the U.S.” They even now make and distribute some Hershey’s products from their factory in Ponchatoula, products which used to be manufactured in Mexico.

So far, Rob and Michael’s children have all worked at the candy company throughout their school years. We’ll have to wait and see if a fourth generation continues this sweet family tradition.

CRISTI TANNER AND BRIDGET RUSSELL OF GAYLE’S JEWELERS IN BOGALUSA

Cristi Tanner and Bridget Russell have a precious piece of family memorabilia framed in each of their homes, a copy of the

spreadsheet from the first month their grandparents were in business. Bogalusa was actually a bit of a boom town, then. In fact, theirs was the ninth jewelry store, not just in the town but on their street. Today, they’re the only one left. “Bogalusa had a population of 30,000 at that time, with people making a good living at the paper plant, the box plant, and the bag plant,” said Bridget Russell. “People came from Mandeville and Covington to shop in Bogalusa. It was the place to be.”

Bogalusa now has a population closer to 10,000. But through the ups and downs, this family-owned business has endured. “Those first few years, Paw Paw used to volunteer to engrave everything for customers, because he knew if it was engraved it wouldn’t be returned,” Cristi said. “So, he engraved everything, watches, bracelets, rings.”

The Overtons handed the reins over to Cristi and Bridget’s mother, Carolyn McGehee, who ran the business well into her seventies before only recently stepping aside and leaving it in the capable hands of her daughters. What began as a tiny storefront has doubled in size as Bridget and Cristi now serve the children and grandchildren of their grandparents’ original customers.

As elegant as you’ll find Gayle’s Jewelers, it’s also small town friendly. Everyone’s favorite employee is Willow the St. Bernard/standard

FEATURE

poodle mix who Bridget says is “customer service.” Regular customers know they can call and say, “Today is my wife’s (or sister’s or mother’s or best friend’s) birthday. What does she want?” and the sisters will not only know what she wants but what she already has.

Both sisters agree Bogalusa has been a wonderful place to grow up, to raise their kids, and to do business.

PETER AND JESSICA CALLAC OF SLIDELL FEED & SEED

Jessica Callac was happily putting her art degree to work at Kern Studios in New Orleans when she was laid off due to COVID. She wasn’t really sure what her next step would be, and she was as surprised as anyone when she found her happy place helping run the family feed and seed alongside her father, Peter.

Known to locals as Miss Mary’s Feed & Seed, the business actually came into the Callac family due to an offhand comment at a cocktail

party. “My grandparents were at a party and my grandfather was talking to the then owner,” Jessica said. “He told him, ‘You ought to sell me the feed and seed’ but he wasn’t really serious.”

Low and behold, the owner was ready to sell and Miss Mary used money she’d inherited to purchase the business in 1972. She and her feed and seed were soon part of the fabric of the city. Over the years, each of Miss Mary’s children and several of her grandchildren worked for her, but it was sons Peter and Melvin who really took to the work and made it their career.

When COVID 19 hit, Miss Mary was 92 and still putting in a good day’s work. But the family just wasn’t comfortable with her interacting with the public. Then, Melvin passed away and, had Jessica not been available to step in, the family was looking at closing up or selling the business.

There’s no doubt Jess has breathed new life into the old family feed and seed. Already an avid gardener, she stepped things up in the plant department and has established a fun and funky social media presence for the store. She’s taken on a sidekick, too. “Devon has Down Syndrome and has come in with his grandmother for years,” Jessica said. “He loves the plants and loves taking pictures of them. One day his grandmother asked if he could volunteer sometime.”

Devon is there every day now and loves greeting customers with, “Slidell Feed & Seed. What do you need?”

As for Jessica, her best days are the ones when customers come in with stories of her grandmother. “I’ll never get tired of hearing them,” she said.

JANET, CHARLIE, AND MICHAEL DELUCA OF DELUCA’S FINE JEWELRY & GIFTS

Janet Deluca didn’t know when she landed an after-school job at Tim Wilson Jewelers in Downtown Covington that it was the beginning of a family legacy. It was 1971 and Janet was a 15-year-old high school student when she first stepped behind the jewelry counter to begin the only job she’d ever have.

Ten years after graduating high school, she bought the business from him, changing the name to DeLuca’s Fine Jewelry & Gifts. That’s when the real work began. “I learned to do jewelry repair and would often work until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning during the holidays,” Janet said. In fact, it wasn’t unusual for her to sleep in the back room at night.

Deluca’s soon amassed a loyal customer base, locals who make frequent visits to the double storefront on Collin Boulevard in Covington for unique jewelry pieces and gifts. No matter who you are, when you walk through the door, you are greeted like you’re the one person they hoped to see that day.

Through the years, Deluca’s has been a true family affair. Janet’s daughters each worked their own after-school and holiday jobs there. Her sister-in-law, Trudy, has been behind the counter for decades. Her niece, April, takes care of the bookkeeping.

Janet’s son, Charlie, studied at the prestigious Paris Institute of Jewelry Technology in Paris, Texas, earning his Certified Bench Jeweler degree. Charlie has endeared himself to Deluca’s customers with custom jewelry design and jewelry repair for 25 years. Three years ago, he bought the family business from his parents.

After 53 years, Janet is finally taking a step back, only working a few days a week. Charlie’s son, Michael, just graduated from Paris Institute of Jewelry Technology himself. We look forward to a third generation of Deluca’s carrying on this Northshore tradition.

DISCOVER THE NORTHSHORE: A CHAT WITH KATIE GUASCO

We recently sat down with Katie Guasco from Visit The Northshore, and the passion the team has for St. Tammany Parish is truly inspiring. They’re not just promoting our area to tourists; they’re sharing their love for our home and driving significant revenue into the local economy.

Just how vital tourism is to our community? In 2023, St. Tammany Parish saw $1.3 billion in visitor spending—a 1%

increase over 2022. This remarkable growth has moved St. Tammany to 3rd out of 64 parishes in visitor spending, creating 13,907 jobs and generating $426 million in earnings. Nearly 3 million visitors came to St. Tammany, bringing in $127 million in state and local tax revenues for the Parish. Without these contributions from tourists, each household would pay $1,345 more in taxes.

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES AND DRIVING SUCCESS

Visit The Northshore is committed to making our area a top travel destination. Katie explained how their innovative marketing and events have helped create an easy and accessible escape for leisure travelers, business travelers and local residents alike. “The Wooden Boat Festival and the Hospice House Crawfish Cook-off were both named Signature Events of the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society in 2023. These events draw visitors from near and far, showcasing our unique culture and boosting local businesses.”

Since rebranding in June 2023, there’s been a palpable increase in Parish pride and greater regional recognition of Visit The Northshore’s impact. The new brand is influencing visitors and residents alike. Hats are donned in Instagram posts from out-of-state patrons and stickers are stuck on cars driving across the Causeway. The organization is currently working on five community murals, to enhance the aesthetic appeal of Covington, Mandeville, Madisonville, Slidell and Abita. They also created All The Waves, a destination podcast. Guasco said the goal of this podcast is to “deliver fun, vibrant and engaging stories from personalities that make The Northshore easy to discover and hard to leave.”

AWARD-WINNING GLOBAL RECOGNITION

Visit The Northshore operates like a close-knit family. Every success is a team effort. This collaborative spirit has led to impressive industry recognition. All staff members earned their Travel Unity Individual Certificates, underscoring their commitment to excellence. In 2023, the organization was reaccredited through the Destination Marketing Accreditation Program - a distinction that defines rigorous standards and quality for destination marketing and management.

Among the many accolades, the organization won three highly coveted awards for the Parish’s bi-annual visitor guide - the North American Travel Journalists Association’s 2023 Gold Award, the 2024 Award of Distinction from The Communicator Awards, and the 2024 Grand Award from the Awards for Publication Excellence.

These recognitions reflect the dedication and hard work of the individuals who make Visit The Northshore such a success.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Our chat made it clear that Visit The Northshore is changing the way St. Tammany is seen by its residents and its visitors. Through groundbreaking rebranding efforts, Parish-wide partnerships and impact-driven programs, Visit The Northshore is shaping a narrative not only around tourism but economic development and community pride.

So, the next time you’re looking for a new adventure or a local getaway, remember the Northshore. It’s not just a destination—it’s home.

INSIDE ARENA COLLECTIVE: A STORY OF EXCEPTIONAL CLIENT CARE

DR. MICHAEL CHRISTNER, DR. BRENT GIUFFRE, DR. MATTHEW BERNARD, AND DR. MARK MCINNIS

DELIVERING EXCEPTIONAL CARE AT COVINGTON TRACE ER & HOSPITAL

Covington Trace ER & Hospital, a physician-owned and operated facility, offers concierge-level emergency care to the local community. Led by nine local physician owners, the facility is open 24/7, 365 days a year, with a team of boardcertified emergency physicians providing a range of services, including emergency medical care, overnight inpatient care, pediatric care, and comprehensive outpatient services such as MRI, CT scans, ultrasound, X-ray, Whole Body MRI and lab tests. The facility offers on-site testing at any time, and patients whose tests are covered by insurance can often be seen the same day.

Dr. Matthew Bernard, Chief Medical Officer, discussed the origins of Covington Trace ER & Hospital, stating, “We decided to open Covington Trace ER & Hospital because we believed there was a better way to deliver healthcare to our community. Our focus has always been on aligning our physician owners, staff, and patient care to create a seamless and superior healthcare experience.”

Reflecting on the initial meeting five years ago with another local doctor who is now a silent partner, Dr. Bernard shared, “At the time, I was deeply engrossed in studying winemaking and had anticipated a discussion about vineyards. I arrived in flip-flops, ready for a relaxed conversation over a glass of wine. Little did I know, that meeting would pivot dramatically toward a far more ambitious goal—creating our own hospital. It was a surprising yet thrilling shift that set the foundation for what Covington Trace ER & Hospital is today.”

The goal is to simplify the healthcare process, understanding that “life is busy,” according to Dr. Bernard. “As the first neighborhood ER and hospital in Mandeville, we take pride in providing warm, personalized care. Our community appreciates the immediate access to care and respectful treatment. We are on a mission to deliver top-notch healthcare in a compassionate, patient-centered environment. We are proud to be a cornerstone of health and wellness in the community.”

Bobby Young of Fidelity Bank is a leader who knows the value of seizing opportunities and staying true to core values. Although he started his career in print advertisement sales, Bobby’s path took a pivotal turn when he embraced the idea of a former CFO, who hired salespeople for banking positions, to break the mold of the traditional banker. The concept was an excellent fit for Bobby, who transitioned from sales to banking in 1995. With nearly thirty years in the banking industry, Bobby now serves as the GNO-Market President at Fidelity Bank, thanks to the vision of a former CFO.

In his role, Bobby is instrumental in upholding the Fidelity Bank mission, which has significantly affected the bank’s longevity. “Fidelity’s leadership remains true to the core mission that was embarked on 115 years ago: to serve the communities we do business in from the heart rather than the bottom line, to re-invest in our employees to ensure the work environment exceeds expectations, and to empower them to perform their job duties to achieve success,” Bobby explains. His vision for the future entails expanding Fidelity’s reach while staying true to its century-old mission and commitment to its employees and community.

Recognized as a top money maker by CityBusiness, Bobby credits his success to the unwavering support of his wife and daughter and trusted colleagues, who keep him grounded and motivated. Whether helping clients achieve their financial goals or fostering a supportive work environment, Bobby Young’s goal remains consistent: leaving a positive legacy.

GREIGE HOME INTERIORS

Since its inception in 2012, Greige Luxury Interiors has set a high standard for interior design by blending timeless elegance with a distinct personal touch. With over 30 years of experience, Greige is more than a design studio—it’s a trusted partner in transforming living spaces into reflections of individual style.

The expansive Mandeville showroom features handcrafted furniture, unique pieces, and original artwork. “We have products you won’t find anywhere else,” said Designer Kathleen McCullough, who emphasized the exclusive relationships Greige has built with artisans. Nearly all the artwork is original, much of it sourced from local artists in Louisiana and Mississippi. “Art speaks to each person on such a personal level,” added Designer Alex Morse, highlighting the intimate connection between art and design.

At the center of the showroom is the Design Center, a space where inspiration comes to life. “All the fabrics, textures, stone—you can see and feel every element of the design,” said Alex. The design team of Alex Morse, Kathleen McCollough, and Sandra Bryant take pride in creating spaces that are functional and beautiful. “We get to know the client and make the design work for them,” Kathleen explained, stressing the importance of being involved early in the planning stages. “It

works well when we are there for the planning stages of a new build or remodel. We’re really able to make the space functional for the way the client lives.”

Greige’s approach is also attuned to evolving design trends. “We’re introducing a lot more color into our designs,” McCollough noted. “Clients are asking for more texture and traditional elements.” This evolution reflects Greige’s commitment to staying current while remaining true to the principles that have defined their success.

Whether working on a single-room makeover or a complete home overhaul, Greige’s team ensures that each project is tailored to the client’s needs and lifestyle. With a commitment to both form and function, Greige is not only designing homes, they are crafting lifestyles.

STEVE SPERIER: A COMMITMENT TO HELPING

OTHERS

Steve Sperier, a Family Service Counselor at Grace Funeral Home, has dedicated his life to serving the Northshore community. He has called Mandeville home since 1978, attended Southeastern and later graduate school at the University of Georgia. His strong faith guides his life. As a Deacon at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, he credits his faith, along with the influence of his parents and coaches, with his personal and professional success.

Many in Mandeville will recognize Steve from his 21-year tenure as the owner of The Spokesman Professional Bicycle Works, but he began his career as an adaptive physical education teacher, traveling throughout the parish to support children with special needs. This experience laid the foundation for his current role in funeral planning, where empathy and guidance are essential. Steve added, “Teaching kids and guiding families both require patience and a big heart. Both roles are about being there for people when they need it most.”

Steve made the transition to Grace Funeral Home in August 2023. He finds fulfillment in helping families navigate the complexities of funeral planning. Reflecting on his new career, Steve compared the team at Grace Funeral Home to a second family. “The support and camaraderie here are incredible.”

Steve’s key to success: “Rejoice in hope, endure in affliction, persevere in prayer.” This guiding principle shapes his life of service and faith, inspiring those around him.

THE

CREATIVE JOURNEY OF CONNIE BORN: CELEBRATING LOUISIANA’S SPIRIT THROUGH MARDI GRAS MISCHIEF CREATIONS

“Creating isn’t a choice for me; it’s a necessity. My ideas dance in my head until they take shape as vivid dolls,” said Louisiana artist Connie Born of Mardi Gras MisChief Creations.

Connie draws inspiration from people, their unique hairstyles (a must for any MisChief doll), and the lively spirit of New Orleans. Her dolls capture the infectious, transformative joy of Mardi Gras. “New Orleans and Louisiana become a part of them. It’s the only place where people experience life fully and enjoy every moment. It’s an old-world culture.”

Influenced by her childhood memories of Navajo feather dancers and her father’s parades with prize Palominos, Connie’s dolls reflect a blend of cultural richness and personal history. She began her journey in 1997, leaving a successful career in sales and marketing to create her first MisChief dolls. Noticed by Dan Kelly of Kern International, her designs quickly gained popularity.

Connie’s pieces incorporate exotic materials such as fine Italian and Turkish leathers, vintage sari and kimono silks, and

an array of beads and feathers. Each one-of-a-kind creation features her signature “Throw Me Something MisChief Mouth,” expressing the culture and spirit of Mardi Gras. Her dolls are displayed at her gallery, Eclectic Finds by ArtDecoGirl in Slidell, where she also takes custom orders, integrating personal items into her work.

You can visit Connie at her new gallery on Old Spanish Trail in Slidell, Louisiana. “Creating MisChief is my way of celebrating the people and culture of Louisiana with a Mardi Gras flair,” Connie shared. “Come see the magic of MisChief dolls and my new Exotic Succulents collection. Let the revelry begin anew.”

Tchefuncte’s Restaurant has found an incredible chef and a passionate leader in Chef Dan Dienemann .

Chef Dan’s culinary journey was influenced by his artist family and a passion for diverse flavors. He apprenticed under legendary chefs like George Pierre at Le Bec-Fin in Philadelphia, learning the importance of balancing flavors and designing beautiful plates. He continued to hone his skills, studying at the American Culinary Federation and earning degrees from Santa Barbara Culinary and Drexel University. Having trained over 50 executive chefs, his dedication to nurturing culinary talent in himself and his team is evident.

A pivotal moment in Chef Dan’s career was working with Gordon Ramsay, helping to open Hell’s Kitchen in Washington, D.C. “Gordon Ramsay’s attention to detail and high standards were both challenging and inspiring,” Dan recalled. He brings this expertise to life at Tchefuncte’s with innovative New Orleans cuisine interpretations.

When Dan found his way to Tchefuncte’s Restaurant, it was the southern hospitality that made him feel at home. “The hospitality here blew me away,” he shared. Chef Dan’s commitment to his team and the community is unwavering. “Everyone here is like family, and engaging with guests is a huge part of the experience,” he noted. His journey, filled with rich culinary experiences and a love for food, makes Tchefuncte’s a place where guests can come any time to enjoy a remarkable meal.

The primary goal of Comprehensive Physical Therapy is to help people in the community live free of pain. “Our patients are the reason we do what we do,” said Owner Billy Beaudreau, PT, DPT, OCS, MTC, FAAOMPT. “So many people live with pain daily and don’t realize the options available at CPT!”

Patient care is one-on-one, beginning with a thorough evaluation and establishment of a treatment plan tailored to meet their specific needs and goals. “We’ll evaluate your symptoms, discuss your medical history and any constraints or concerns you have to create the best recovery plan for you. We’ll be here for you at every step in your rehabilitation,” said physical therapist Jeff Cresson.

Physical therapy is a safe and effective way to rehabilitate a variety of injuries and ailments. CPT offers specialized regimens to help you recover from an accident, rehabilitate after surgery, relieve pain and prevent future injuries. “We have an extensive array of state-of-the-art equipment and methods,” said Wes Lee, a physical therapy assistant. “We offer physical, manual and vestibular therapies, dry needling, migraine relief and fall prevention—all in a warm, friendly atmosphere where you can heal in peace.”

CPT’s commitment to heal and rehabilitate the Northshore community grows stronger with every patient’s achievement. “The gratitude we receive daily for helping our patients get their lives back motivates us to do more. We come to work each day rooting for your recovery and can’t wait to see you thrive,” said physical therapy assistant Adam Cookmeyer.

IN DEVELOPMENT

Visitation continues trending up as Louisiana State Parks and Historic Sites saw over 1.75 million visitors last year, a five-year high. This pattern of growth is expected to continue as enhancements and new amenities are continuously added as funding becomes available. In fact, visitation is on track to climb to over 2 million visitors this year.

This is a stark difference from when I first took office. I was told by the previous administration that we would need to close seven state parks. Closing down parks was never an option we considered. After implementing cost saving measures and working with entrepreneurs through publicprivate partnerships (P3s), several state parks are now making a profit.

Last fiscal year, 20 out of 21 state parks had P3 agreements with 30 private businesses generating over $435,000 in revenue. Those agreements vary from kayak and tubing rentals to horseback rides and riverboat cruise tours. Our riverboat cruise partners generated a significant portion of this revenue at nearly $209,000 from over 13,000 guests across four state historic sites. During the same fiscal year, driven mainly by the riverboat influx, gift shops at the four sites rang up over $205,000 in sales with a combined estimated economic impact of nearly $415,000.

Our state parks need to offer first-class services, facilities and amenities in order to attract new visitors and keep our current visitors coming back. At Fontainebleau

State Park, upcoming projects include: RV campsite upgrades to add full-sewer hookups, new nature center aquarium exhibits, and a special needs playground will accompany our all-terrain track wheelchair that is available for use at no charge.

We have plans to expand our P3 agreements with the goal of enhancing visitor experiences while generating additional revenue. Last year, we solicited proposals from entrepreneurs to enter into P3 agreements to potentially design, build, finance, operate and maintain new facilities such as cabins, group camps, campgrounds and playgrounds. We think Fontainebleau State Park could benefit from a number of P3 projects, for example: a new RV campground with pull-through campsites, new cabins, and more. Numerous project proposals were received and are under review by our team to ensure proposed projects support not only the Louisiana State Parks mission, but also the local community’s needs. We are always looking for new opportunities to partner with entrepreneurs. If you are interested in partnering with Louisiana State Parks, we want to hear from you. I’m excited to see which projects will move forward as we embark on this journey.

Here, at The Gloriette, we’re combining warm hospitality with the finest that our culinary scene has to offer. The Gloriette restaurant features local and French-inspired cuisine, all in an inspiringly vibrant space, drenched in light and handpainted murals. Chef Alex Harrell has introduced new menu items this season, creatively pairing bright local flavors with traditional French and Southern Louisiana fare. We invite you to taste our fresh take on dishes like our Heirloom Tomatoes and Peaches with buttermilk dressing, sourdough, spiced pecans and fresh herbs. The Gulf Tuna Crudo with pickled fennel, pistachios, Castelvetrano olives, and preserved lemon is another favorite among our guests. If you are really looking for something unique, the Local Sweet Potato Curry with roasted local vegetables, mushrooms, quinoa, and vadouvan is another delightful dish.
