Christmas in April® changed the organization’s name to Rebuilding Together® to better reflect the year-round mission of more than 240 affiliates in all 50 states.

Rebuilding Together is the nation’s largest volunteer organization that, in partnership with the community, rehabilitates the homes of low income homeowners, particularly people with disabilities and the elderly so that they may continue to live in warmth, ®

safety and independence. This is done at no cost to the homeowner! The organization started in 1973 in Midland, Texas, when a group of church volunteers decided to devote one day in April to repairing homes of lowerincome elderly or disabled people in their community. One of the recipients of their help exclaimed, “Lordy, it was just like Christmas,” and the name stuck. The idea spread from city to city until 1988 when there were 13 affiliates. Then, the existing chapters decided to establish Christmas in April® USA to spread the organization across the land. In 2001

Each April, tens of thousands of volunteers offer an outpouring of help throughout the USA. Corporations, churches, synagogues, civic, city, military and labor organizations tackle sagging roofs, leaking pipes, peeling paint and rotting steps, etc. that are health and safety hazards for people who cannot help themselves. Many affiliates tackle emergency projects and help other non-profit groups all year round. Volunteers say they get far greater rewards than they give. In 1996, the Warner Robins community, including business, civic groups, HQ Air Force Reserve Command, churches, individuals and City of Warner Robins officials joined together to form Christmas in April® Warner Robins, which became official on January 16, 1997. The first workday took place in April 1997 and by 2006 over 453 homes and ten non-profit organizations’ facilities have been improved.

2006 National Impact • 8,900 houses and non-profit facilities rehabilitated • 267,000 volunteers donating their time and skills • Work done in 1,879 communities across America • Over 240 affiliates nationwide
