LEEDS CITY CENTRE
14
Leeds city centre is a vibrant destination which people flock to from all over the city and beyond. With transport links by train or road, it has been one of the most popular day trips and nights out in the north for many years.
One of the defining advantages of Leeds’ centre is the relatively compact size which makes it convenient to navigate. Whilst many city centres sprawl outwards, here you’re always within a walk of where you want to be.
Locals too have every reason to be tempted from their Leeds suburbs and enter the centre of a city not standing still. For every preference, there are shopping delights, fabulous food, and endless entertainment - every day and every night of every week.
This central hub has kept the city’s traditional essence as it has expanded into distinct areas and evolved into modern attractions.
15
The happily contrasting mix of old and new can be seen most vividly at two core shopping sites within a few steps of one another. Kirkgate Market has been the soul of the city since the 19th century, and this beautiful historic market hall remains filled with stalls selling everything you could need.
Elsewhere, Leeds’ handsome buildings are occupied by an array of eclectic businesses. High street stores line up in the popular expansive shopping centre Trinity and on longstanding shopping strip Briggate, which veers off either side into intriguing arcades and alleyways. Many of the alleys contain traditional pubs, including the city’s oldest, Whitelock’s, whilst each arcade is a wonderfully distinctive piece of Leeds.
Nearby is the equally striking architecture of Victoria Gate, an impressive shopping centre filled with aspirational shops which opened in 2016 and keeps Leeds progressing and progressive.

Thornton’s, Grand, County, Queen’s and Central Arcades are all aesthetically beautiful and home to some superb specialist stores such as OK Comics and Welcome Skate. Other excellent independents like Chinese Laundry and Colours May Vary can be found in the glorious Corn Exchange building, for many years a hub for Leeds’ counter cultures. As well as a prime shopping destination, Leeds city centre attracts hoards of people for its array of restaurants and bars. From top to bottom, there are dozens of eating and drinking treats; up at the Northern Quarter it is known for a fantastic night out, with cool city venues Belgrave Music Hall and North Bar amongst many more. And down on the South Bank you’ll find a revitalised part of the city which expands out from the scenic Granary Wharf to local brewery success Northern Monk Refectory. In between these north and south hotspots, there are countless terrific places for every occasion: quality coffee shops such as Laynes Espresso and Mrs Atha’s; vibrant nightlife on Call Lane and at the inclusive Freedom Quarter; restaurants serving cuisines from all over the world - from vegetarian Indian at Bundobust to Michelin Stars at The Man Behind The Curtain.
21
22
And there’s abundant entertainment everywhere: music sounds out in all genres and sizes, from creative cooperative Wharf Chambers to star attracting Leeds Arena; there are several fabulous art galleries and fascinating museums, including the Henry Moore Institute and Royal Armouries; and few cities can compare to Leeds for theatres, as The Grand, Leeds Playhouse and City Varieties lead the way for the best entertainment in stunning settings. All of that is just the start. There are years of discoveries - of historic, characterful places ingrained in the city and of vibrant diverse happenings moving Leeds forward - for everybody to explore across the city centre and experience their favourite Leeds.
23
24
25
This has led to Headingley becoming a destination for its attractive nightlife, and in particular the Otley Run. This famous pub crawl takes in vibrant bars like The Box and longstanding pubs including Woodies and The Original Oak, amongst many others. There are plenty of eateries to soak it up here too. Italian Salvo’s has been one of Leeds’ best restaurants for decades; I Am Doner provides proper German kebabs; and Heaney & Mill make quality British fare in handsome surroundings.
HEADINGLEY
And the community venue Heart epitomises the inclusive vibe of Headingley, where students and locals mix harmoniously.
A couple of miles north of Leeds city centre is an area that has become well known far beyond its locality. Headingley is famous with folk across the country, and even the world, for two distinct reasons: students and sport.
Moving up to Far Headingley finds a cafe culture that starts with the artistic Bowery, moves through the stylish Fika North, and settles at wine bar Bottle Chop.
The latter is because of Headingley Stadium, home to Leeds Rhinos rugby league club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club since 1890. From then to now, it has welcomed millions of visitors from inside and outside of this city, to become an iconic stadium in the sporting world. All around Headingley there are residential streets which over recent decades have been increasingly occupied with student living. 26
In between, the Cottage Road Cinema is still going strong as a traditional picture house since 1912. For students, locals and visitors, Headingley is a unique suburb that offers so much more than most.
27
28
MEANWOOD In recent years, Meanwood has risen from a popular residential suburb to one of Leeds’ hippest hangouts. The original community feel remains, and is now joined by a creative collective who have figured that Meanwood is a lovely place to live and a great area to visit. The attractions here range from brilliant bars to beautiful nature. On the roundabout into Meanwood, the quintet of Alfred’s, Boot & Rally, Meanwood Tavern, Number 8 and Terminus provide wonderful beers and cocktails all within a few steps of one another. Further up, The Myrtle Tavern sits scenically alongside the local cricket pitch for the best pub garden. Tasty Italian restaurant Zucco, sushi experts HanaMatsuri, gluten-free bakery Wildcraft, and laid back coffee shop Humbl have helped elevate Meanwood into national recognition as one of the coolest spots. And beyond the food and drink, it is also one of natural beauty; there are wonderful walks to be had on the Meanwood Valley Trail, whilst Meanwood Park is a lovely expanse of greenery to relax into.
29
HYDE PARK Joining up the Universities and Headingley, it is unsurprising that the Hyde Park area is a student hotspot. This part of the city provides some of Leeds’ best entertainment within rows of popular housing. Starting besides the main road out of town, Woodhouse Moor is a large park which packs in a skate park, tennis courts and plenty of grass to laze on. Nearby are shops, cafes and bars - notably and respectively, North South Vintage, Coffee On The Crescent, and Hyde Park Book Club.
Down from here you’ll find two of Leeds’ most celebrated venues: Hyde Park Picture House charms all-comers with original features and arthouse films. Just along the road is Brudenell Social Club, a Leeds institution which has transformed a working men’s club into one of the nation’s best music venues. Further along, Hyde Park turns into Burley which merges into Kirkstall. Local places for food and drink are plentiful - eat at Manjit’s Kitchen, drink at The Cardigan Arms, and be dazzled by Left Bank, a church turned into a unique event space. There are wonderful outdoor attractions too - the evocative ruins of Kirkstall Abbey are surrounded by nature and canal walks - or perhaps stop off besides the water at Kirkstall Bridge to sample the brews of the popular Kirkstall Brewery.

CHAPEL ALLERTON Chapel Allerton is one of Leeds’ most popular areas - a short distance from the city centre, this friendly neighbourhood offers a wide range of shops and amenities while maintaining a cosy, villagelike atmosphere. There is something for everyone – shops for books, art, even Angels! ROUNDHAY Roundhay, along with neighbouring Oakwood, has a reputation for being one of the most desirable places to live in Leeds. One of the major reasons for this is the tranquil oasis of Roundhay Park, which offers over 700 acres of greenery, wildlife and attractions for people of all ages. Oakwood – situated to the south of the park – features a cheerful parade of independent businesses, where you can find great brunch spots like Gron, have a pint of local beer at SALT, try Syrian foods at Bab Tooma, or enjoy Neapolitan
38
treats at Pizza Loco. There is a warm community feel, with regular local markets and a pop-up cinema. Towards the north of the park, the well-known Roundhay spots include the Roundhay Fox pub, as well as the plethora of restaurants, bars and coffee shops that make Roundhay’s Street Lane a buzzing hotspot. Whether you feel like a fancy dinner, a day out with the family or a quiet brew with a book, Roundhay has something for you.

40
HORSFORTH Horsforth is one of the largest Leeds suburbs, and it has become increasingly buzzy in recent years, with people flocking to enjoy its greenery, independent businesses and thriving community atmosphere. Though only a ten-minute train ride from the centre of Leeds, Horsforth’s charming village aesthetic feels a lot further away from the built-up city centre. There is a traditional English high street, featuring a butchers, a sweet shop and multiple café options for your caffeine fix.
Classic pubs such as The Old Ball sit close to newer craft beer spots and intimate wine bars like Granville’s and Ernie’s. There are plenty of daytime activities too; as well as being situated close to the rolling hills of the Yorkshire countryside, Horsforth has its own community park, Horsforth Hall Park, with facilities for all the family, as well as the Horsforth Hall Museum, which is entirely volunteer run and free to enjoy from March to December each year.
41

44

Treat yourself to a food tour of this multi-cultural suburb and you’ll find mouth-watering Indian samosas at Anand Sweets, fluffy Polish patisserie at Karpaty and rich Ethiopian stews at Abyssinia - all for a great price. When you’re finally full, take a stroll around the Thackray Medical Museum, or soak up the sun in Harehills Park.
CHAPELTOWN Chapeltown is a vibrant suburb on the edge of the city centre, within walking distance of Chapel Allerton. Potternewton Park is a real gem of this urban suburb, with beautiful gardens, an orchard, and a bowling green. Chapeltown is also home to the famous Leeds Carnival, a glorious celebration of West Indian culture, many of whom live in this area, which brings together local businesses and communities from all around the world.
FARSLEY Farsley provides all the charm of Yorkshire village life, with extra hustle and bustle. RESTAURANTS 54
This one goes out to the foodies who are looking for some great spots to test out. There’s a near-endless list of amazing eateries in Leeds, ranging from casual takeaways that are perfect for late night cravings, to some of the highest-regarded food in the North. The 111 square kilometres that make up our city are positively bursting with flavours, aromas, and new culinary experiences that can turn a regular Tuesday night into one you’ll be telling your grandchildren about in years to come. That’s how good some of the food is around here. With a diverse community comes diverse cooking, and those cultural dishes have found fame on our streets, creating restaurants that are pioneers in food from every continent. You could spend a month dining out every day and still wouldn’t come close to experiencing the full range of things that are on offer in Leeds. Everyone’s got favourites, of course, but sometimes thinking – and eating – outside of the box can open up a whole new world. So, for anyone fancying enlightenment (or, of course, just a tasty bite to eat for your tea), here’s a great selection of some of the best spots in town.
55
BUNDOBUST
THAI AROY DEE
What do you get when you combine Mayur Patel, a chef with generations of Indian food heritage, with Marko Husak, a pioneer in the craft beer industry? You get Bundobust, an entirely vegetarian restaurant serving the tastiest, authentic Indian street food paired perfectly with modern, locally brewed beer. As good as it sounds and a deserving Leeds success story.
This Vicar Lane Thai spot is a favourite in the Leeds food scene; the simple dining space is overshadowed by the vibrant Thai aromas coming from the kitchen. Loved for their flavourful, authentic food full of big flavours but sold for little prices.
56
HOUSE OF FU

Head chef Ben Iley spent 9 years in Tokyo studying under the masters, including Ivan Orkin, the acclaimed chef of the renowned Ivan Ramen. Stuzzi are ‘purveyors of fine Italian stuff’, serving small plates intended to be shared in tapas style. Traditional, modern and street-food style cooking meld together to create delicious food in a stunning setting.
57
EMPIRE
MANJIT’S KITCHEN

Manjit’s kitchen is a family run business serving bold, vegetarian Indian food. With over 10 years of history in Leeds, Manjits is a foodie favourite for their unique approach to cookery. Combining local produce and ingredients with traditional indian flavours and techniques.
58

THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN This Michelin star restaurant was opened by Yorkshire born chef Michael O’Hare. The Man Behind The Curtain has earned a stellar reputation for their unique, contemporary style of cooking matched only by their creative and artful presentation.
59
CAFES Sometimes, the difference between a good morning and a bad one can depend entirely on which cafe you end up in. They’re the place where hangovers dissipate, colleagues are turned into friends, and relentless studying turns (hopefully) into academic success. Where would we be as a society without the trusted cafe to prop us up in our hour of need? And Leeds is a city luckier than most, as our streets are lined with dozens of quality businesses, open 7 days a week, and willing to provide us with our caffeine fixes and tasty brunches. Never worry about bad coffee again. The relaxing atmosphere of Mrs Atha’s can soothe even the most fraught mind, while the energy you feel as soon as you step through the doors at Laynes has the power to rejuvenate an otherwise-spent student. Each place is undeniably unique, and yet all of them serve the same purpose: to be there, unwaveringly, for their customer. That’s the beauty of a cafe. It will be whatever you need it to be. Here’s a selection of our favourites, so that next time you’re searching for a particular feeling, you know exactly where to find it.
60
LAYNES ESPRESSO
MRS ATHA’S
Laynes Espresso is located on the walk to and from Leeds train station, and they are hard to miss with their iconic yellow exterior. Renowned for their friendly welcome, stylish vibe and fabulous coffee, Laynes food menu also features some classic Yorkshire favourites, including a ‘Leeds Bun’ - a cardamom spiced bun filled with rhubarb and custard.
The perfect spot to escape the hustle and bustle of Leeds city centre. Tucked away on Central Road, Mrs Atha’s is an established coffee shop with a deserved reputation for serving up some of the best coffee in Leeds in an atmosphere of relaxed cool. The tasty food menu changes regularly too, so pop in and check out the blackboard to find a delicious daytime bite.
61

The relaxed social setting of the original has been providing a perfect respite for students for several years. And at both venues, as well as quality coffee, you’ll find a range of tasty, fresh bakes such as peach, lemon and vanilla cake or vegan blueberry and maple syrup mini loaves.

Their location on Hyde Park Corner makes it an ideal regular spot for students and locals alike. As recipients of the Yorkshire’s best coffee shop award, you can be sure you’re in for a treat!
64
A Leeds business taking strides towards a more sustainable future for the coffee industry. They are now high quality roasters with a stylish cafe adjoining their Clarence Dock roasting site. Support their mission by enjoying a delicious cup of coffee that you can be sure was produced ethically.
65
When it comes to good old-fashioned pubs, there’s no better place to find them than Leeds. Here is the home of the Otley Run - a vibrant pub crawl famous for students and thousands of visitors. We’re a city notorious for narrow pubs that somehow manage to cram themselves into tight alleyways around the city centre. And we’ve got some of the best brewers in the UK to ensure you’re always near a great pint. But these pubs aren’t just places to soak up the booze, oh no. These are places steeped in culture, in stories. Like many other parts of our city, there’s a rich history surrounding many of our tried-and-tested locals. Businesses such as Whitelocks have been proudly serving customers since 1715, while pubs like The Palace are so old many of the locals swear they’ve seen ghosts puttering around the beer garden. And while we understand that it may not be the main factor that convinces you to stop off at any of these places, it’s always comforting to remember the long and varied history that flows from each beer tap, or run your hand over a bar that’s seen generations of Leeds residents before you coming to enjoy their post-work drinks. Here’s a collection of some of the best, oldest, and most loved pubs in Leeds.
PUBS 66
WHITELOCK’S ALE HOUSE Leeds’ oldest pub, Whitelock’s Ale House opened in 1715 as the Turk’s Head, and since then it has become a beloved Leeds institution. Whitelock’s has attracted numerous star studded clientele, notably Prince George who entertained a party in the pub in 1912. Now it’s perfectly preserved into a timeless wonder of great drinks and proper food. Head down to experience what over 300 years of history brings to a contemporary pub.
THE ANGEL INN The Angel Inn is a traditional Sam Smith’s pub tucked away behind an alley off Leeds’ high street Briggate. If you’re not familiar with the rules of a Sam Smith’s pub, there are no phones, no music, no card payments and no children. The idea is to encourage conversation and protect traditional pubs - whatever you make of all that, the mix of people enjoying a budget pint in The Angel seem happy enough!
67
THE ORIGINAL OAK
KIRKSTALL BRIDGE
The Original Oak, on Otley Road in Headingley, is one of the main stops on the famed Otley Run. On any Saturday expect a bustling pub full of punters in the most creative fancy dress. Any other day of the week you’ll find a successful local pub, popular with students and locals, and with the biggest beer garden ever!
At the edge of the River Aire you’ll find this independent, community focused pub. As well as a perfect pint from Kirkstall Brewery, Kirkstall Bridge serves up some tasty food too! Pub classics, vegan and vegetarian treats but the real shining star is one of their famous Sunday roasts. A lovely exterior to sit by the river, or if the weather fails, snuggle into the warm and welcoming inside.
68
THE PACK HORSE
THE DUCK & DRAKE
The Pack Horse have two venues one with a claim as the city’s oldest in the centre and one as the 11th pub on the route of the Otley Run! Both are the epitome of a friendly local; they serve a nice selection of beers, with Timothy Taylor Landlord as a regular, and attract a mix of students, locals and visitors alike.
The Duck and Drake is a traditional Leeds pub that champions live music. This city centre pub perpetually has a calendar filled to the brim with great musical talent, with blues bands and covers bands bringing the noise. Otherwise, this is a proper pub to settle into, complete with a lovely beer garden perfect to escape the lively city centre for a moment of quiet.
69
THE CHEMIC TAVERN
THE ADELPHI
Take a trip down to Woodhouse to experience this historic real ale pub. Community spirit is embodied by The Chemic Tavern, so much so that Leeds Council listed them as an asset of community value. They are open seven nights a week hosting an array of events including folk night, open mic night and quiz night.
Step back into Victorian era Britain with a visit to The Adelphi. Although its surroundings have changed vastly over the years, this pub has preserved the vintage vibe. They have combined modern British hospitality with old-school decor to create this harmonious match of good drinks, pub grub and relaxed times.

BARS 72
Anyone who’s ever spent a night out in the city will understand exactly how alluring Leeds’ nightlife is – and for those that haven’t, perhaps this is your sign. People travel for miles on the hunt for excitement, for relaxation, for the change of pace that can be found here. The evening transport becomes a third rush hour as people head into the city in search of a good time, and they’re certain to find it. After all, our bars are second to none. The sun goes down, and the city comes alive. Live music drifts from the basements of a dozen different establishments – people lounge easily on tables and chairs outdoors, mingling, chatting, before hopping over to the next place that catches their eye. We boast wine bars, beer bars, cocktail bars. We’ve got bars where you can play pool and bars where you can spend an evening playing retro video games. Head out of the confines of the inner city, and you’ll see the fun doesn’t stop there either. Wherever you go in Leeds, there’ll be a bar that feels as if it was built with you in mind. Here are a few of our top picks.
73
BELGRAVE MUSIC HALL ROLAND’S So much more than just a bar, Belgrave is a space for creative spirits to flourish. Music, art, film, good food and good drinks all come together under one roof at Belgrave. They have two inhouse kitchens, Dough Boys serve inventive pizza out of one and Patty’s serve up tasty burgers out of the other. Plus a bar filled with good drinks, good people and good times.
74
On the vibrant Call Lane, Roland’s lovely laid back surroundings are matched with equally stunning drinks. There are multiple areas to enjoy your tipple, each a different vibe than the last. In the summer, the rooftop may emerge as the favourite, tucked away behind the courtyard, whilst the cosy interior is a welcoming visit all year round.
NORTH BAR
BOOT & RALLY
If craft beer is your thing, North Bar is the place to be. With an unparalleled selection of beers available - from North Brewing to global imports - and an encyclopaedic beer cellar, the original Leeds beer bar continues to lead the way 26 years later. Don’t worry if beer isn’t your drink of choice, North has an equally excellent spirit selection and is famous for its Bloody Mary’s.
Meanwood favourite Boot & Rally is a cosy neighbourhood bar that loves great Yorkshire beer! Kegs and casks rotate frequently, whilst local favourites Stuzzi and Kang’s provide fresh, fun food on site. They host regular events too, like ‘quiz and a curry’ on a Wednesday, but Boot is an ace visit every day of the week.
75
HEADROW HOUSE
BOTTLE CHOP
This former textile mill is now a booming part of Leeds nightlife. Headrow House is home to a purpose-built music venue, a large beer hall, the award winning Ox Club restaurant, and not one but two roof terraces. ENTERTAINMENT & CULTURE 105
There’s no shortage of amazing art in this city. From the groundbreaking, fresh work that’s produced by the talented students of Leeds Arts University, all the way upward to the greats such as Henry Moore and Damien Hirst, we’re a community overflowing with creativity. Here, art intertwines with people’s everyday life. It can be witnessed at independent exhibitions and in acclaimed galleries, in the murals splashed across the city or seen in the beautiful designs that are displayed in our shopping centres, our arcades, on our pavements. Every blank space is an opportunity waiting to happen, and every opportunity can be used to break boundaries, challenge the norm. But make no mistake; there’s room for everyone in Leeds. By no means do you have to be an art aficionado to appreciate the incredible things that are created around here – nor do you have to have any prior skills to join the pottery workshops, or the illustrating 101 sessions, or the countless other courses that are on offer through the year. All you need is a little bit of passion. So spend a bit of time getting yourself stuck into the artistic subculture, and see what it might inspire you to create for yourself.

LEEDS ARTS UNIVERSITY
If sculpture is the medium of your choice, the Henry Moore Institute is the perfect place for you! There’s an extensive sculpture research library, including sculpture archive papers, plus fantastic free exhibitions. The foundation was started by Moore and his family to encourage public appreciation of the art form, and it continues today preserving his legacy.
Over 180 years, Leeds Arts University has been a leading school of art, and is in fact the only specialist Art School in the North of England. The School’s Alumni speaks for itself, with artists such as Damien Hirst and Danny Sangra having studied here, and many recent graduates adding to the city’s creative workforce. For your chance to catch the next generation of talent, keep your eyes peeled for student exhibitions.

EAST STREET ARTS
THE TETLEY
East Street Arts is a charity, artistled organisation working to incite real change within the industry by encouraging artists to take control and providing them with the space and infrastructure to develop their practice. They are pioneering change throughout the art world whilst championing the creative work of our local artists. Their eclectic exhibits are a must visit.
The Tetley is in the ever-developing South Bank of Leeds. Formerly the Tetley Brewery, the large art deco building is now a space for emerging artists to host free exhibitions for the public to enjoy at their leisure. There is a bar and kitchen here too, serving tasty, instagrammable dishes. Exhibitions change regularly so keep an eye on their website.

ASSEMBLY HOUSE
SCREW GALLERY
Alongside the Leeds-Liverpool canal in Armley you’ll find Assembly House in an old Victorian mill. Assembly House is both an artistic workspace and gallery, committed to showcasing the variety of art and inspiring creativity in the community through public exhibitions, workshops and interactive activities.
There are several art projects in Leeds, creating exciting work from the ground up - from live performances to pop-up galleries. Screw Gallery is a great example of this, an artist-led gallery space on Vicar Lane displaying bold work from Leeds artists and world art within the strikingly minimalist interior.

MUSIC 116
If you were to think of Northern music, it’s likely that cities such as Manchester or Liverpool would pop into your head. While that’s understandable, Leeds is a behemoth in its own right, and we think it’s more than deserving of a spot on the podium. We’re a city steeped in music history: post-war jazz flourished here, changing the makeup of the scene forever. Grassroots music, beginning in the halls of Brudenell or Oporto, has supercharged the careers of local bands like Yard Act and Kaiser Chiefs. Festivals and events come around in this city as often as bad weather (not that that stops us going out there and packing out the festival fields, mind you). Music is something woven into the very fabric of Leeds, regardless of what level you search for it - be that open mic nights in the Grove pub or sold out shows at the Leeds Arena – and there’s an added sense of honest, Yorkshire magic which makes every performance just that little bit more special. So whether you’re searching for the next big thing, or you just want to find a good DJ to dance the night away to, you’ll never be left in silence if you listen out for it here.
117
BRUDENELL SOCIAL CLUB
HYDE PARK BOOK CLUB
This iconic venue is an integral part of the Leeds indie music scene; they value freedom, creation and the unity that music provides above all. After opening its doors in 1913, Brudenell more recently transformed the social club into a nationally renowned music venue whilst retaining its inclusive community essence. Local acts, next big things and household names, from The Cribs to Charlotte Church, regularly light up their stages to an intimate room full of fans.
Housed in an old petrol station in Hyde Park, Book Club is a fabulously unique venue that champions creativity and inclusivity. It’s truly a melting pot of culture - music, the arts, politics, theatre, literature, poetry and everything else in between are celebrated behind its bright red doors. Downstairs hosts basement gigs, often, aptly, from the best underground artists around.
118
FIRST DIRECT ARENA
O2 ACADEMY
First Direct Arena provides the people of Leeds and beyond with the ultimate arena experience. You’re guaranteed a great view from any seat in the house as all are stage facing, matched by the spectacular sound. It’s played host to some of the world’s biggest performers, including Bruce Springsteen, Drake and The Mobo Awards.
This Grade I listed building is the home of Leeds’ O2 Academy, originally opening as a coliseum in 1885 the site has changed with the times but the core purpose of celebrating performance still reigns true. Courteeners, Slash and The Killers have all played this historic stage and there are many more big names to come.
119
PROJECT HOUSE
THE WARDROBE
The people behind Brudenell, Welcome and Super Friendz collaborated to bring the Leeds creative scene an exciting new ‘project’. Project House is a large capacity venue for music, markets, events and more. The ex tile factory has been transformed into a refreshing, industrial style venue which has already hosted gigs from Kamaal Williams and Royal Blood.
The Wardrobe is an award winning bar and kitchen on St Peter’s square in the heart of Leeds’ cultural quarter. However, the real magic happens in the basement where you’ll find a 400 capacity music venue. Over the years, their stage has seen the likes of Lewis Capaldi, Catfish and The Bottlemen and even the beloved Amy Winehouse.
120
BEAVER WORKS
THE DOMINO CLUB
Beaver Works is an old industrial space, converted into a multi room music venue that hosts some of the most legendary parties in Leeds. With quality DJs soundtracking epic and underground dance tunes to six kitted out, themed rooms, a large outdoor seating area, and even the occasional fun fair ride, Beaverworks always provides a night to remember.
Leeds’ very own speakeasy, Domino is an underground jazz bar that has incredible live music running practically around the clock! It wouldn’t be a speakeasy without a secret entrance would it? Head through The Domino barber shop and find a snapshot of prohibition era Britain, where walls are decked with vintage prints, the lights are dim, the music is groovy, and the alcohol is strong.

It’s a form of entertainment that trails back throughout the centuries, providing countless people with evenings of thrilling performance. It’s one of those things that never quite loses its touch. It’s a place to take dates, mates, and everyone in between, and know that they’ll always leave impressed. Of course, we’re talking about the theatre. And this is an area in which Leeds has always thrived. From the ornately decorated halls of City Varieties to the pioneering works performed at Leeds Playhouse, there’s a tap of talent that never seems to stop flowing from out of our city and into the world. It goes without saying that these last few years have been hard for the arts, but as always, the people of Leeds have rallied tirelessly around these irreplaceable institutions and ensured their continued survival. This means, thankfully, we’re still able to immerse ourselves in their compelling stories. It means we can still be amongst the first to discover contemporary productions from the likes of Northern Ballet and Opera North. And what a wonderful honour that is. Here are some of the greatest theatres that Leeds has to offer.
THEATRE 122
THE GRAND THEATRE
LEEDS PLAYHOUSE
Built in 1878, Leeds Grand Theatre is the epitome of decadence, fitted with Victorian velvet, gold leaf and a 6389 crystal chandelier. Although the venue is breathtaking, the performances always steal the show with a regular bill of exemplary plays, musicals, comedy and more.
Although the origins of Leeds Playhouse dates back to the 1950s, the current Playhouse opened its doors in 1990. Legend Dame Judi Dench even laid the foundation stone in 1989. Since then it has been a thriving theatre showcasing the best of new theatre productions in the UK. A recent revamp has enhanced the Playhouse even further as a theatre that is integral to Leeds.

Carriageworks is a theatre that puts on forward-thinking familyfriendly shows. Find them by Millenium Square on Electric Press. Carriageworks is dedicated to providing Leeds with family entertainment, the venue is even kitted out with its very own pram park, they have flat floor performances with cushions and mats, booster seats are available and mothers are welcome to breastfeed.

SPORT Perhaps the most famous export of Leeds is its sporting successes. In far flung lands, the city’s sports teams and stadiums are known all over the globe. Of course, the city’s football team Leeds United are renowned across continents; say you’re from Leeds when abroad and often the reply of recognition will be ‘ah, Leeds United’. Cricket fans in countries as distant as India and Australia will always recognise the stadium of Headingley; host of many memorable international matches. Next door, Leeds Rhinos play rugby league to a proud crowd who have enjoyed success and strength on and off the pitch. Beyond these headline clubs, there are an array of activities for all levels of skill and experience to participate in; from cycling and running clubs, to gyms and swimming pools, to tennis courts and golf courses. Whether you want to watch with the world or play with your friends, Leeds is bound to be a good sport.
133
FOOTBALL 134
The city’s football team Leeds United are supported in huge numbers, in Leeds and across the world. The club’s presence in the city is unmissable, as murals of legendary players and managers adorn the streets all the way to Elland Road. And inside the stadium is a special atmosphere of a city marching on together. There are plenty of ways to play in Leeds too, with teams in every locality and 5-a-side set ups at the likes of Goals and Sports Park Weetwood. Plus inclusive football is encouraged, as great organisations such as Football 4 Me, Marching Out Together and Women’s Social Football allow easy ways for everybody to join in. 135
136
CRICKET Headingley Stadium has been the home of cricket in Leeds since 1890. From then to now, the ground has grown to an impressive 18000+ capacity complex which hosts some of the biggest and best games in world cricket. The atmosphere for England matches from decades past to present days is something to experience; or perhaps enjoy it at its more serene as the home of Yorkshire CCC. You’ll notice pitches all over the city too, as weekend leagues, midweek matches, indoor nets and junior leagues enable all ages and abilities play through the summer and create communities within.
137
RUGBY Joining on to the cricket ground, Headingley also has a 19000+ capacity rugby stadium. Home of Leeds Rhinos rugby league club, whose men’s and women’s teams have achieved enormous success in recent years. As well as the passionate support on the pitch, the city and the sport have more importantly shown the strength of togetherness and friendship off it. The inspiring story of Rob Burrow and Kevin Sinfield raising awareness of motor neurone disease has displayed the human connections that elevate far beyond sport and which sports help to create.
138
139
140
PLAY Whether you’re a talented athlete or a beginner trying to keep fit, Leeds provides an array of options to play sports and exercise. As well as the nation’s favourites, there are clubs and places for all kinds of activity. Tennis courts are easily accessible at plenty of parks; golf courses add expanses of greenery to the urban landscape; gyms range from budget friendly excellence to keep fit luxury; running clubs and park runs abound and every year Leeds hosts great 10ks and half-marathons; get on your bike to glorious Leeds surroundings with help from cycle groups if you want to make it social; and there’s plenty more too, from the niche to the popular - so when in Leeds, there’s no excuse not to get sporty.

OUR HANDMADE COLLECTIVE Our Handmade Collective is putting the high street gift stores to shame, with thousands of items handpicked from talented independent makers all over Yorkshire. Keeping it local is essential to OHC, but they also bring in a few special items from further afield. Head down to their Horsforth store to experience the magic yourself.
SEAGULLS REUSE Seagulls paint is a thriving community enterprise with the environment and local community at heart. Since 2002 they have saved over 4 million litres of paint from landfill whilst simultaneously providing local customers with high quality but low cost paint from their Kirkstall Road hub. They also provide training, volunteering and employment opportunities for marginalised people in Leeds - truly a service for the people.

Where history and community converge, you’ll find a marketplace. Leeds is famous for them – Kirkgate Market stands proud in the city centre as one of the most impressive in Europe, a beautiful site oozing with local history and filled with fabulous stalls. But Kirkgate is far from the only one present in Leeds. We’ve got markets that spring up amongst ancient ruins, markets that specialise in cultural favourites, markets that are dedicated to selling the produce of our Yorkshire farmers – if you have a craving, they’ll have a stall that can satisfy. These places are bustling with people and products, as well as a variety of thingamabobs, doodahs and other assorted trinkets. You can find yourself wonderfully lost between the ever-changing stalls, or search for your little corner of peace within the pop-up walls of a café, spending hours watching flashes of every other person who’s passing through. These places are beautiful and unmissable, not only because of their historic value, but because of their continued impact on a modern day Leeds. For as long as there is a community, there will be a market in which they come together to buy, trade, and connect.
MARKETS 160
161
KIRKGATE MARKET
Leeds Kirkgate Market is one of the largest indoor markets in Europe, filled with hundreds of traders and small businesses located conveniently in the city centre. The beautiful historic site goes back to the 19th century and remains at the heart of Leeds’ retail scene since its latest rebuild in 1981; Kirkgate has once again become a haven for shoppers over recent years. 162
Inside the impressive architectural walls and dome roof are over 800 stalls: many traditional stalwarts of the market moving through generations; other welcome new additions keeping the market modern and on trend; all representing Leeds with pride.
From fresh fruit and veg to fine fabrics and expert electricals, plus a street food court to dine out in, Kirkgate Market is an integral piece of Leeds which has something for everyone.
163
ARTSMIX
ASIAN BAZAAR
If you’re looking for that unique, special something, Artsmix is the market for you. Every first Saturday of the month, expect Albion Place to be bursting with creativity as the makers set up their stalls of crafts, design and all sorts of handmade goodies. Artsmix only displays originally produced work so you can be sure to find a one of a kind piece.
Every Wednesday the outdoor area of Kirkgate Market is transformed into the Asian Bazaar for a glimpse into the variety of incredible products available from the diverse continent. Expect exotic produce, stunning ceremonial jewellery and the finest of silk saris. Amazing for the Asian community to shop at and wonderful for all of Leeds to explore.
164
LEEDS FOOD & CRAFT MARKET
KIRKSTALL ABBEY MARKET
On Leeds’ central shopping street Briggate, every first and third Sunday of every month it is lined with dozens of stalls selling delicious foods and creative crafts. Adding an extra friendly buzz to the bustling city centre, this is the perfect place to grab super street food to fuel your shopping trip and pick up some goodies to take back home.
You’ll never see a market with a prettier backdrop; set in the stunning Kirkstall Abbey ruins, this market runs on the last weekend of every month between March and November. Stall holders alternate every month, supplying fresh Yorkshire produce, arts and crafts, natural beauty products and handmade gifts.
165
FARMERS MARKETS There are various farmers markets to be enjoyed in several suburbs on different days all over Leeds. Three favourites are Headingley, Horsforth and Otley. Headingley Farmers Market takes place every second Saturday of the month at the Rose Garden. With over 20 stalls gathering to feed the hungry mouths of Headingley, you’ll catch city favourites such as Bondgate Bakery and Cryer & Stott Cheesemongers. At St. Margaret’s Church in Horsforth, regular and guest stallholders ensure there is always something interesting and tasty at this lively atmosphere.
Their variety of seasonal food can be purchased on the first Saturday of every month between 9:30am12:30pm. On the last Sunday of every month you can head down to Market Place in Otley and find an incredible variety of items from local sellers. Clothes and household goods are on offer but the real star is the locally grown, quality produce.

DIVERSITY 168
Leeds is a community filled with communities, and the city is all the more diverse and vibrant for it – after all, how boring would it be around here if everything and everyone was the exact same? We all know about our famous annual Pride parade: a coming-together of the LGBTQ+ communities from far and wide, celebrating who they are on the streets of Leeds. But our local pride in one another extends far wider than just a single day. In fact, it’s a year-long commitment that’s taken on by dozens of different organisations, and it’s what helps to make our city into a community, not just a place to live. LGBTQ+ book clubs and late-night cafes are run throughout the year. We have music programmes dedicated to finding young talent in disadvantaged communities, and organisations who are committed to looking after the mental wellbeing of every person who walks through their doors. Celebrations are rife around here too – because if there’s one thing we love more than each other, it’s a party! Wherever you go, and whatever time of year you go there, you can always find a place that will welcome you with open arms. It’s simply in the nature of this connected city.
169
FREEDOM QUARTER In the last decade the people of Leeds have pushed the city into a progressive and inclusive place. Since innovative club nights Vague and Speed Queen led the way in the 90s and 00, now there are a variety of amazing LGBTQ+ happenings all over town.
One of which, The New Penny, is the longest standing LGBTQ+ club in Leeds, since 1953 it has been a safe space for the community, and along with many more, is still standing proud.
This is most visible at the Freedom Quarter, an area of Lower Briggate where LGBTQ+ people are celebrated, the centrepiece of Leeds Pride and home to many iconic LGBTQ+ clubs and bars. 170
171
WEST INDIAN CARNIVAL There are many different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities throughout Leeds. Together, these have evolved the city into a wonderfully diverse home, where new experiences enhance traditional Yorkshire character.
The whole city joins in this cultural celebration as parades full of colour and life dance through the streets of Leeds.
Nowhere is this more evident than at the West Indian Carnival. Chapeltown is the hub for Leeds’ African and West Indian residents, and host to the city’s annual Carnival at Pottenewton Park.
The vibrancy of the Carnival is not exclusive to that one day due to the close community bond here, plus the West Indian Centre keeping the sound systems playing and the party going all year round.
172
173
UNITY DAY After bouts of negative media coverage, Hyde Park residents set up Unity Day in 1996 to highlight the positive aspects of living in the vibrant Hyde Park area. Here, people of all backgrounds live many Asian families and European communities reside alongside an increasingly attractive student hotspot - as one of Leeds’ most popular areas.
Unity Day on Woodhouse Moor unites them every summer with good music and friendly vibes. All aspects of the day are organised by the community, everyone contributes voluntarily and all artists perform for free. It’s a day all about bringing people together; Unity starts with U!
174
MINDWELL Throughout Leeds, there are charities and organisations who are doing admirable and vital work to support the people who need it most - from the city’s independent homeless charity Simon on the Streets, through Getaway Girls positively empowering women, to the citywide mental health initiative Mindwell. As mental health has rightly come more into focus, Leeds is providing the resources to help. Mindwell is a free mental health website dedicated to ensuring Leeds residents can find up to date, accurate information on the mental health services available to them. Funded by the Leeds Integrated Care Board, their mission is to guide vulnerable people through their mental health journey and towards a future of health or wellbeing.

PLACES TO VISIT 178
Step off the train in Leeds city centre, and you’ll know almost immediately that this is a city which lives and breathes excitement. It’s in the air – in the buzz of the commuters sipping coffees from local cafes, on the walls covered in art that showcases the pride we have for the place we live. Here, the opportunities are endless, and so are the places to explore. There’s never a boring day when you know what to look for. Pick between historic ruins or modern art. Amble down Kirkstall canal into peaceful countryside or immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the vibrant high streets. Have an action-packed afternoon spent axe throwing and crazy golfing, followed by a highbrow evening in a Michelin restaurant. Or, if you’re feeling particularly energised, you can try fitting all of that into one day – something made possible by the fact that all these experiences are within half an hour of one another. That’s what makes Leeds such a one-of-a-kind city: the world is at your doorstep. This Cistercian monastery was founded over 800 years ago and is one of the best preserved in the country. THE DONKEY SANCTUARY
ILKLEY MOOR
Within the urban city of Leeds you can quickly immerse in the rural Yorkshire countryside. That is the glorious setting of The Donkey Sanctuary, a lovely place to visit for all ages. Come on down, meet the herd of donkeys, and perhaps even adopt one! There are also Donkey Assisted Activities to develop life skills, as donkeys have a natural ability to help their human friends.
Ilkley Moor is the famous moorland rising over the market town of Ilkley. Walking the moor is a wonderful Yorkshire experience with stunning views. It’s the site of the iconic cow and calf rocks which got its name due to the positioning of the rocks resembling a cow and its calf. And that’s also the name of the pub which rewards at the end of your ramble.
186
OTLEY CHEVIN Otley Chevin is a glorious expanse suitable for all-comers. It’s a popular site for climbing and bouldering plus footpaths and bridle paths that attract walkers, runners and riders alike. Surprise View is the most popular point of the summit and is often thought to be the highest, which is in fact Beacon Hill that reaches 283 metres. Wherever you rise up to, Otley Chevin is a rugged beauty to explore.
RODLEY NATURE RESERVE Designed to bring wetland wildlife back to Leeds, Rodley Nature Reserve was built from a floodplain in Kirkstall Valley. The site has since become a must-see for wildlife lovers with regular events like pond-dipping and bat walks. There is also a visitors centre where you can learn all about the fascinating wildlife that inhabit the space.
