Petergate by Claudia Rose

Claudia Rose is a freelance artist based in Leeds. She draws inspiration from the beauty of places she visits, bringing the essence of each location to life through watercolour paints and coloured pencils. Whether it’s the sweeping vistas of the Italian coastline or the historic charm of English streets, she hopes her work resonates with those who share her passion for both art and travel. This piece depicts the quaint street of Low Petergate at dusk, catching a glimpse of the York Minster over the shop rooftops. Alongside her art prints, Claudia also offers bespoke original paintings via commission.

Heppni Bakeri

India Luck opened the delicious Heppni Bakeri on Swinegate this summer. Here’s her journey from growing up in York to opening a bakery for everyone in the city.

Growing Up

I grew up in York and have always worked with independent businesses in the food industry. One of my first jobs was at Shambles Kitchen, I was fourteen and I walked in one day when they were really busy and asked if they had any weekend jobs going; one of the owners at the time handed me an apron there and then and got me helping straight away. I worked there on weekends through school for four years, and full time in the holidays. I loved being a part of someone’s routine, even from a very young age, I could see how a really small interaction can totally change a person’s day, in a really lovely way.

Falling in Love

I fell into baking, which was totally unexpected. It was the start of lockdown and I had a friend opening a bakery (Flori in York) - I started just by making stamping bags and making coffee, then gradually learned how to bake and totally fell in love with it. Since Flori, my baking journey has taken me up and down the UK with the dream to always open a place in my hometown, York.

Living the Dream

Heppni has been a dream for years, I loved working at bakeries, but I always wanted to create a bakery that was a reflection of all the good things in life: wonderful people, delicious food and a place that feels like a warm hug when you come in. I’ve travelled all over the world, and everywhere I’ve been the most memorable experiences are always where you are made to feel so welcome. Bring your friends, your mum and dad, your kids, your dogs, we can’t wait.

Family Fortunes

The word Heppni means Luck in Old Norse. Luck is my last name - I have a very supportive family, my three older brothers have been amazing in getting the bakery to where it is, so it’s a nod to them. I always wanted to name the bakery something that means a lot to me. I have also had the most amazing help and guidance from friends - it’s been a real team effort and will remain to be. The way I see it is you don’t work for someone, you work with them.

We Love It!

We bake mainly viennoserie pastry (which is the posh word for flaky pastry) croissants, pain au chocolat, almond croissants, seasonal fruit danishes and a lot more. As well as this we’ll be baking various cakes and cookies. It’s predominantly French and Scandinavian style of baking, with a tickle of English charm. We’ve got some really amazing coffee in the grinders which pairs beautifully with the pastries, and we’ll be making some refreshing summer drinks, like our lemon and basil lemonade, a summer essential! We’re making pastries and coffee for everyone, and we love it!

Seeing Scarborough Sights in Style

There’s something special about an open top bus. With the sun on your skin and the breeze in your hair, it’s surely the most fun way of getting around town. From the lofty height of the outdoor deck, the elevated view gives a wonderful perspective of place, as you sit back in comfort and ride on in style.

And there’s something special about Scarborough. With its dramatic coastline, seaside glitz and timeless charm, it’s one of the most popular places to visit in the UK. There’s no better town to tour on an open top bus than Scarborough; and there’s no better way to travel Scarborough than on an open top bus.

This summer, these two special things combine, as you can hop on the Beachcomber bus and be transported through Scarborough’s many attractions aboard the open top. Unlimited rides all day - costing only £7 for adults, £4.50 for children, or £16 for 4 people - mean you can be chauffeured to all your favourite parts of town and hop off at your leisure.

The route travels between Scarborough Railway Station and The Sands, a journey which shows you the glory of Scarborough from the greatest vantage point. Overlooking the glorious North Sea, taking in the seaside scenes, and watching the people going about the beaches and arcades, the fish and chips and ice creams, and all the quintessential experiences of Scarborough.

Stops include: the Grand Hotel, a famous old building which evokes Scarborough’s rich history and ritzy glamour; St Nicholas Gardens, a lovely area of nature which connects the town centre to the South Beach; West Pier, beside the beach and amongst the action on the South Bay promenade; and The Sands, at the relaxing North Bay and near to the many attractions up there.

Along the way, you might want to visit the stunning sites of Scarborough Castle or Peasholm Park, you might choose your beach between the vibrant South or the laid back North, you might join in the endless entertainment of amusements and activities, and you might stop for food and drink from the countless cafes, chippies, restaurants and pubs…

Whatever you choose to do, and wherever you want to go, the open top bus will take you there with an experience that’s as fun and memorable as your day out in Scarborough.

York: a UNESCO City of Media Arts

Cherie Federico and Dale Donley set up Aesthetica 21 years ago when they were students at York St John University. Since then, from their York office, Aesthetica has grown into a media organisation working across publishing and exhibition on national and international levels. They produce the BAFTA-Qualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, Aesthetica Art Prize in partnership with York Art Gallery, and publish Aesthetica Magazine. As pioneers of York as a UNESCO City of Media Arts, Cherie explains the positive significance of that designation for the city.

"York was designated a UNESCO City of Media Arts back in 2014. It’s the only UNESCO City of Media Arts in the UK and one of 25 worldwide. Others that share this status include Austin, Texas; Sapporo, Japan; and Toronto, Canada. It means that York is recognised as having the same outputs in media arts as these global destinations, which is so powerful and so significant.

Media Arts is games, film, television, publishing, computer, digital and graphic arts. If you’re watching Netflix or playing a game, you’re engaging with media arts. Aesthetica has been actively working with a range of city-wide partners to drive progression routes and pathways into these creative industries. As a city, we are in a unique position – we can harness our global status to create jobs and opportunities, drive inward investment as well as further social cohesion.

The list of organisations working in York and doing amazing things is impressive: Viridian, the company that do the visual effects for The House of the Dragon; Stage One, the organisation that built Abba Voyage, staging for Eurovision, Serpentine Pavilion and Paris Olympics; gaming company Revolution Software has millions of downloads on iPhone; and independent television company Button Down Productions create reality TV on BBC and Channel 4.

The focus now is on how York can make more of our UNESCO designation. How can we encourage young people into digital careers, encourage more businesses to start-up? We are more than just history here - our city has this vibrant, contemporary culture that brings with it a raft of prospects. There is a great sense of pride for the amazing outputs currently coming out of York. Collectively, we need to recognise the opportunities that being a UNESCO city gives us as a place to develop further.

UNESCO is positive for all sectors: retail, hospitality, transport, services. It’s about the entire city embracing something so special and our designation lifting us all up to create new jobs for young people, so if they want careers in media arts they do not have to move to London. We are on a precipice of change. One of the six key strategic areas for growth in York & North Yorkshire is creative, digital and tech.

In the past 12 months, Aesthetica have launched a campaign called Reignite, which is a series of events focusing on the economic impact of the creative industries and media arts in York. We opened the Creative Business Skills Academy, which is a bootcamp to work with start-ups to help them to grow their companies in the sector. We ran the first citywide Filmmaking in Schools project with 100 young people in the city, and we are running a Media Academy in November alongside the film festival for young people to learn about careers in the industry.

I want to make a difference in York. I have a young child and I want her to be able to access opportunities in the creative industries when she grows up. I’m in a position where I can make change happen, and I intend to do just that."

They will be affordable to buy and residents will benefit from shared weekly meals and other community events.

FAMILY FUN LOUNGE DESIGNED FOR STATION

York Railway Station could soon get a new play lounge for waiting families. Based on a successful similar scheme at London’s King’s Cross, an empty unit on the station concourse will be transformed into an imaginative space with train-themed activities, a play castle and murals inspired by the city’s historic architecture.

The History

What next for Herbert House?

Situated on Pavement, Herbert House is one of York's most fascinating and elaborate buildings. Our friends at York Uk spoke to Guy Bowyer (architect and Chiet Executive Officer for York Conservation Trust) and Dr Dav Smith (partner at Maybank Building Conservation and Lecturer in Historic Buildings at the University of York) about the history and preservation of Herbert House and Lady Peckett's Yard.

Herbert House is three buildings, all post medieval and timber framed. The newest building is the one at the front, which people instinctively think is the oldest; that was actually built around 1620. The middle building is the oldest around 1550, and the building at the back about 1570.

The buildings were leased by the Merchant Adventurers to their wealthy merchants. The middle and front buildings were rented to Christopher Herbert - a successful textile merchant - who was the first Herbert to occupy the site. He sold his textiles there, and also lived in the building. It all worked because Lady Peckett’s Yard connected directly to Merchant Adventurers.

Christopher became the first of four Lord Mayors to live at Herbert House. Lord Mayor John Peckett is where Lady Peckett’s Yard’s name originates, after his wife Alice. In front of the building, Pavement was the first paved street in York and the second most important market square. It was a significant civic and mercantile space, and these are three of the largest surviving post medieval mercantile buildings in the city. That’s why Herbert House and Lady Peckett’s Yard are so important to York.

The Preservation

As a building preservation trust, we have three charity objectives: The first is to preserve historic buildings for the benefit of people in York and North Yorkshire. The second is to promote the use and enjoyment of our buildings. And the third is to educate heritage crafts and skills.

Herbert House needs a program of renovation, and that's what we're investing in - delivering a project which enables all the buildings to be fully used. We’re keen to do more with Lady Peckett’s Yard too - York snickelways are brilliant and we want to put more uses back into a really lovely street.

The plans are being developed alongside a program of public consultation and engagement activity. The test events we've done with York Unlocked, Festival of ideas and tours with the Civic Trust have proven how interested the public are. And we're interested in their ideas too - it’s a transparent journey all the way through, sharing plans and seeking feedback.

We’re also hoping to find partners to help us fund such an important body of conservation work. Investing in people with heritage craft skills who can provide that education. The purpose is to create reasons to go to Herbert House and Lady Peckett’s Yard and enjoy a space that connects with the past.

The Hidden Garden

On the edge of York, there is a hidden garden that opens up into a magical place to explore. Goddards is located behind York Racecourse on Tadcaster Road, where you’ll find beautiful nature and fascinating history.

Here you can immerse in five acres of garden with formal terrace and pond, fragrant herbaceous borders, wildlife areas, vegetable garden and historic glasshouse. As well as soaking up the nature, you can also learn about its rich history, as the home of famous chocolatiers the Terry family.

This is one of several wonderful National Trust sites in Yorkshire, including the Treasurer’s House in the centre of York, all exceptionally preserved for fabulous days out. Visit in the summertime to experience these unique places at their best. Goddards is open to visitors Thursday to Sunday throughout August and at weekends from September.

Rodizio is a traditional Brazilian style of service. We offer an authentic Brazilian experience, preparing the finest cuts of meat skewered and expertly cooked, which is then served and carved at the table side. Our salad bar includes salads and hot dishes which will offer something for everyone.
