Black Wheat Club

A hotly anticipated eatery opens on Fossgate this February with all the ingredients to become a new York favourite. Black Wheat Club (BWC) arrives as a beautiful bistro and micro bakery that harmoniously combines complementary influences; it’s rustic and refined, local and European, comforting and quality, traditional and innovative, flavourful and sustainable. Which, all together, creates a wonderfully welcoming space that connects through the simple joys of great food and drink.

Black Wheat Club was born out of the passion of owners Marta and Tomek, not just for food itself, but for the stories that food creates.

Marta explains: “At its core, it’s about the craft that transforms simple, quality ingredients into something memorable and the comfort that only homemade cooking can bring. We wanted to create a space where people can find this kind of comfort and feel a sense of connection.”

The duo have already gained a popular reputation in York through their established street food stall Krep at Shambles Market Food Court and their previous pop-up project Mokosh. Whilst Black Wheat Club confidently embodies its own undeniable identity, it has been informed by the education and ethos of those prior ventures.

“Mokosh was a baby step toward the vision that laid the foundation for BWC” says Marta.

“It turned out to be a big hit, but it lacked one thing we craved: the chance to host people in our own space and create an all-encompassing experience” - something which they’ve put right exceptionally with the handsome setting and warm hospitality at BWC.

The spirit of BWC, elevating fresh local ingredients into joyous heartwarming dishes, can be linked back to their childhood in Poland.

“Our grandmothers and mothers were masters of turning simple produce like vegetables, meat, grains, and bread into hearty meals for the whole family” says Marta. “It was all about homemade cooking, comforting dishes crafted from the heart, and buying fresh produce directly from local markets. This upbringing instilled in us a deep respect for honest ingredients and the magic that happens when you cook with love and care.”

Through Black Wheat Club, Marta and Tomek are nurturing that same love and care into a modern dining experience. A place where mornings begin with fresh bakes and top-notch coffee, easing into a relaxed brunch. Afternoons linger over simple yet extraordinary lunches and evenings come alive with small plates, natural wine and good conversation. The result is something that feels both deeply rooted and refreshingly modern, and can only be created by devotion, talent and authenticity.

@blackwheatclub

This isn’t just a business for us
It’s a life project that represents everything we value: passion, collaboration, and the joy of sharing good food with good people.

Colour & Light

York Minster will light up with colour this Winter in a stunning visual display. This cultural arts project by York BID encourages thousands of people into the city to experience an inclusive event which celebrates York’s heritage and creativity.

Colour & Light began in 2023 when it transformed York Minster and returned in 2024 to showcase York Art Gallery. In 2025 the Minster’s iconic South Transept will be illuminated by a spectacular display of flora and fauna, telling special stories on a ten minute loop about York’s diverse and beautiful wildlife; from the peregrine falcons that call the Minster home and the foxes that roam the city after dark, to the horses that the Roman’s rode into Eboracum on, and the legendary dragons carved into York’s history, it promises to be a dazzling and fascinating sight.

As well as putting on a creative show harmonious with the city’s UNESCO Media Arts status, one of the main aims of Colour & Light is to give people a unique reason to visit York’s centre. It’s funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with cash allocated by City of York Council. The fund highlights the importance of investing in cultural initiatives to support local economies and enhance community well-being. Partners York BID, Double Take Projections and York Minster emphasised the positive impact such an event can have on a city:

Carl Alsop, Operations Manager at York BID: “Colour & Light is fast becoming a highlight of York’s cultural calendar. By encouraging families and visitors to explore the city centre during these quieter months, we’re not only creating magical experiences but also supporting local businesses and reinforcing York’s vibrant evening economy.”

Visit Colour & Light South Transept York Minster for FREE 12th February - 2nd March 6pm - 9pm

Lisa Power, York Minster’s Head of Events and Participation:

“Colour & Light welcomes tens of thousands of people during what is often the coldest, darkest and quietest time of the year. We hope that this beautiful display will once again remind everyone that York is open all year round!”

York Collage Quarters

Discover more about our cover story from the illustrator Ric Liptrot and Guy Bowyer, CEO of York Conversation Trust.

York Conservation Trust commissioned me in 2024 to create a series of 5 panels each depicting an area, quarter, of central York, alongside a fifth 'Cultural' panel. Each panel measures 122cm x 86cm painted directly on 12mm plywood, they have been hung on the walls to the entrance of their new offices at The De Grey House, St Leonards York.

The artwork was commissioned to create a talking point and help to engage with visitors about the role of the Trust in York city. Each panel includes a mixture of YCT buildings as well as other significant buildings and components which make up the rich tapestry of York's streets.

The colour scheme was inspired by the original 1920's lino flooring which was found when restoring the De Grey House to its former glory.

I am very proud to have been involved in this project and looking forward to working with the Trust again in the future.

There are limited edition signed prints available of each of the 5 panels. Please visit www.ricliptrot.bigcartel.com to find out more.

The Trust is delighted with the artwork Ric has produced for us. His five panels are an expressive, playful and accurate take on the colours and textures of Yorks historic streetscapes. They look very much at home in the entrance hall at De Grey House and the colours really do work beautifully with our restored Art Deco Linoleum floor. We would be very happy to welcome anyone that would like to see the artwork, or the floor, in person.

The weather might still be grey and gloomy but there’s plenty to look forward to in York over the next couple of months. Make It York’s Ice Trail will return in early February with a theme that explores myths and legends, including some of the stories told about the city’s own past. Later in the month, the Jorvik Viking Festival will then be back, providing hands-on historical activities and entertainment that the whole family can enjoy. If you’re hoping to make a move in 2025, you might discover your dream home at one of York’s latest developments.

YORK ICE TRAIL IS BACK

York’s popular ice trail is back for 2025. The theme for this year’s trail is ‘origins’ and it will feature sculptures inspired by myths, legends and local history. Organised by Make It York, the event takes place over the first weekend in February. Those attending will be able to watch ice carving demonstrations, enjoy interactive experiences and even win prizes.

The first passivhaus-style eco homes at Clifton’s Duncombe Square will go on the market this spring, while the Hungate apartment complex will be completed with a final seven-storey block of flats. A more unusual opportunity has arisen at Eden Camp near Malton. The wartime museum is seeking new owners for the first time since it was founded in the 1980s. Its next custodians will have a unique chance to shape the future of the attraction, which is visited by around 125,000 people each year. Read on for more news about what’s going on in and around York.

FOREST SCHOOL PLANNED FOR ACOMB NURSERY

Muddy Boots Nursery in the grounds of Westfield Primary has submitted plans to create its very own forest school. The dedicated outdoor area within the nursery’s grounds will be used to provide activities such as den building, foraging, tree climbing and cooking. It will also have a Nordic-style tipi, in which activities can be offered all year round.

CITY’S FIRST ELECTRIC TRAINS TRIALLED

Tests of electric trains on a newly electrified section of line between York and Church Fenton have proved successful. The change is being implemented as part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), which aims to eventually bring a cleaner, greener and fully electrified rail service to York, Leeds, Huddersfield and Manchester.

NEW FLATS WILL COMPLETE HUNGATE DEVELOPMENT

Hungate’s unfinished housing development could at last be completed with a new seven-storey block of flats. It will be the final addition to the apartment complex, which is sited next to The Stonebow, and is expected to include 221 flats with communal amenity spaces. 10% of these will have discounted affordable rents.

TANG HALL BECK TO BE RESTORED FOR WILDLIFE

Part of Tang Hall Beck could be restored to boost habitats for wildlife. A project by the St Nicks environmental charity will see the banks re-profiled along a 450m-section of the waterway with help from the Environment Agency and community volunteers. Diverse planting will also be used to create homes for amphibians, birds, mammals and invertebrates.

EDEN CAMP SEEKS NEW OWNERS

The much-loved North Yorkshire attraction is being put up for sale for the first time. Eden Camp inhabits a former POW camp near Malton and explores different aspects of life during WW2 through an immersive living history experience. It has been owned by the same family since the 1980s and attracts 125,000 visitors each year.

YORK CHOIR CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY

The York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir is celebrating its centenary this year. To mark the occasion, its members will perform at the Barbican alongside other local choirs and host a summer concert, in which they’ll sing songs from different decades in their 100-year history. They’ll also be visited by members from their twinned choirs in Germany and Holland.

THE VIKINGS RETURN FOR JORVIK FESTIVAL

From the 17th-23rd February, Viking warriors and other costumed reenactors will take to the streets for Jorvik’s annual Viking Festival. This year’s festival will see one of the most famous times in York’s past brought to life with workshops, tours, feasts, traditional crafts and dramatic combat performances to entertain all ages.

YORK’S FIRST PASSIVHAUS HOMES

GO UP FOR SALE

The new passivhaus-style eco homes at the Duncombe Square development in Clifton will be put on the market this spring. The houses have been designed by awardwinning architects and will help to reduce carbon emissions as well as their owners’ energy bills. An on-site show home will allow prospective buyers to take a look around.

SHOP YORK CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED

York BID and Indie York have launched a campaign that encourages people to support local businesses during one of their quietest times of the year. The Shop York scheme runs through February and people will be able to collect a sticker each time they spend £5. Once they’ve gained five stickers, they’ll then be able to enter a prize draw.

YORK MINSTER GETS NEW SOLAR PANELS

The 184 solar panels have been installed on the roof of York Minster‘s South Quire where they will generate 70,000 kWh of energy, providing the building with a third of the electricity it requires. They were switched on and blessed last month in a ceremony led by the Dean of York.

York Italianissimo

York is blessed with a strong Italian community which has spawned some special restaurants serving the food of their homeland. From the pizzas of Naples to the seafood of Sardinia, we took a culinary journey around York to taste the authentic flavours and traditional cultures of Italy.

I'm from Sardinia, which is one of the oldest food cultures, pre Roman times. It gathers a lot of influences - from North Africa and from mainland Italy. As an island, it is rich for everything, from the seafood to the mountains. You have a lot of game and sheep and pig, also traditional pasta.

I moved to York in 1990 and started working in a restaurant called Sylvanos. I came to stay for six months and ended up working for about five years before deciding to stay and go to catering college. I opened Il Paradiso in 2006 and am still in York 35 years after arriving!

On the main menu we have classic dishes from different regions in Italy. Then on the specials board, we specialise in dishes with Sardinian influence: things like suckling pig, fish, king prawns… and a traditional pasta of tomato, saffron, basil and pork sausage ragu; it’s called Malloreddus.

My Nona Francesca is the inspiration from back home for food. She had so much passion. She grew up through the war so she had to do the most with very few poor ingredients to make nice meals for the family. Spending time with her was always a really fun way for me to learn how to cook.

The whole family made pasta. It was usually left on the Saturday and made for Sunday. For lunchtime, we have lasagna, the family gathering together with the little wheel to cut. It was so fun, so magnificent. It makes your love, and it makes a family. It makes life a lot better.

Don't eat because you need to. You need to eat because it's good for you and you enjoy what you eat. Eat for the pleasure.

Paolo - Il Paradiso del Cibo

Armando - Cresci

I'm from behind the Amalfi Coast and close neighbours to Naples. Where I come from is the land of the pizza, where the pizza was born in Italy. Fantastic!

I arrived in York in 2013, and we opened Cresci in 2020, just before the lockdown. We chose York because we love it here. Every pizza we make is like a taste of home.

Because of the region we come from, we serve real traditional pizza. From a simple Margherita, the ‘Queen of Pizza’, to the variety of toppings, all our ingredients are Italian. It’s the number one pizza in York.

@crescipizzeria

Franko - La Bottega

I'm from the island of Sardinia and our main dishes are based on villagers agro-pastoral tradition, and above all seafood cuisine.

I moved to York around 2018 and worked as a chef until last year when I started a collaboration as a chef for La Bottega.

For La Bottega I’m preparing Sardinian boards with cured meats and cheese, ravioli di Sardegna and also vegetable soups. And we often match Sardinian or Italian wines with the food we serve.

Daniele - Buongiorno

I come from a place called Oristano which is about 7 minutes from the sea and 15 minutes away from a mountain called Monte Arci. This is a good combination for me because being in the middle of the sea and the mountains I had a nice culinary experience at home.

I was working in Oristano at this little bar and really wanted to have an experience out of Italy. I was only 27 so it was the best time to move, still able to learn a new language and do something with my life.

The food is inspired by my home, as are all the recipes for the dishes we serve. I make Malloreddus, which is from Sardinia, but we do that with a different ragu which comes from Puglia. There are three flavours from beef, lamb and pork filler, and we serve it with creamy black pecorino cheese in the bottom of the dish, then drop the hot pasta on top.

You can smell the Sardinian flavours. This is a secret, to have a small restaurant because as soon as people walk by the door, the beautiful smell of our cooking hits them.

All Aboard the No.82!

York is renowned as one of the best cities to visit for a day out or weekend away in the UK. For residents here, or visitors venturing outside the city, York is also the perfect hub to explore more of Yorkshire. A short journey will transport you to rural moors or coastal townsor to a small city with huge charm: all aboard the no.82 bus to Ripon!

The route to Ripon winds from York through quaint villages and characterful towns which offer scenic views to pass by and excellent experiences to stop off at. We travelled the line, from York to Boroughbridge to Ripon, and found an array of attractions along the way…

YORK

Departing from York Piccadilly in the city centre, and also picking up at York Rail Station, there’s plenty of choice for prior breakfast or coffee nearby. Amongst the selection of cafes and coffee shops, you can fill up on a healthy porridge or a hearty full English at Brew & Brownie, or wake up with speciality Scandinavian-inspired Vi Coffee at Spark, to prepare you for the day ahead. Upon returning to the city later, York’s many restaurants and bars will keep your day out going into the night. For communal vibes and good times, try Ambiente, whose two branches - on Fossgate and Goodramgate - serve delicious sharing tapas and quality drinks in an atmosphere that’s as cosy or vibrant as you like. And on the same street as the latter site, you can plan your next journey beyond Ripon by visiting Heritage Collection Travel, a local independent travel agent who tailor-make trips from York all around the world.

BOROUGHBRIDGE

Between York and Ripon, the no.82 visits the attractive North Yorkshire market town of Boroughbridge. Hop off here to explore the picturesque streets and rich history - notably the ancient and mysterious monument Devil’s Arrows standing stones, which are reputed to be around 4,000 years old. Modern-day Boroughbridge has lots to offer too, with a pretty river walk and a high street of cafes, shops, pubs and restaurants. On here you’ll find FINK, a lovely local store that’s ethical and exceptional; for food, gifts, personal care and homeware, for the everyday and for luxury, you’ll be on your way from FINK with something lovely and local. A minute down the road is another warm and welcoming space, Hideaway Home and Kitchen. This stylish cafe is great for all day dining, with mouthwatering menus for brunch and lunch, plus a stylish store of beautiful, eco-friendly homeware products.

RIPON

Onto our destination, Ripon greets us with the magnificent sight of Ripon Cathedral - confirming its city status and towering majestically in the skyline. This beautiful building has over 1350 years of fascinating history and you can explore it all for free! Stroll Ripon’s quintessential Yorkshire streets which combine traditional independence alongside modern amenities; lined with shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, leading to the central square which every Thursday and Saturday hosts the vibrant Ripon Market. Sample the northern hospitality by eating out and drinking in at unique and tasty places. Daytime, Realitea cooks up authentic Indian food in a traditional Yorkshire tearoom - an unexpected mix which works wonderfully. For lunch, Oliver’s Pantry serves delicious homemade grub in a stylishly quirky setting. For dinner, Mario’s Restaurant 27 delivers Italian excellence for Yorkshire appetites. And for drinks, Portly Pig is a cute and cosy bar and bottle shop serving beers from local breweries alongside other quality refreshments. After all this, the no.82 will be ready to bus you all the way back to York. @officialeybuses
