The Beast from the East

York Minster taken during the Beast from the East 2018 snowstorm. The 4 people just appeared from nowhere, like ghostly apparitions. The photo feels like it could have been taken in the Victorian era. It was so cold & windy that taking the image was tricky. Tripod kept getting blown over, couldn’t see settings or viewfinder. Plastic bag over the lens until the last minute.

New Year, New You

As the world turns another year older, it’s time for many of us to reflect on the past and resolve on the future. A new year’s resolution can mean different things for different people, from small steps to positive transformation; whatever it is you’d like to do, be it personal growth or achieving your dreams, there are people and places all over York helping you reach your resolution.

Ways to Wellbeing

More than anything, a successful new year’s resolution is a positive change that improves our mental wellbeing. There are many routes to this outcome: reducing stress; following your ambition; learning new skills; treating yourself; helping others; and two simple, affordable and controllable ways to a happy new you: eating healthily, and connecting with nature.

Surrounding York are miles of wonderful nature - breathe in the countryside at the North York Moors and the sea air on the East Coast. But even in the city you can connect to the natural world through the flowers, plants and botanicals brought here by a couple of fabulous places. Wigginton Road Nurseries is a family business run by brothers Gary and Andrew who specialise in cut flowers and plants, hand-picked, fresh and high quality. For your everyday wellbeing or a special occasion, they’ll help you add colour and nature to your year. And why not accompany them with some natural candles? Born of Botanics is a beautiful shop on Stonegate that sells soaps, ointments and candles made from essential oils, plant extracts, beeswax, soya and coconut - adding to your new relaxation and reducing your old stress.

An equally popular resolution for the new year is to eat healthily. Putting nutrition inside you is easily done if you shop at one of York’s fresh food sellers. Amongst a few fine greengrocers across the city, Millie’s on Bishopthorpe Road is the longest serving, supplying quality fruit and veg to the people of York since 1918. Over a hundred years later, you can now buy from the friendly store or get delivered to your door - so there’s no excuse to break your resolution. Along the same street, M&K Butchers keep you shopping local and eating well, whilst on Newgate, Cross of York provide you with all the health benefits that fresh fish offers. Bringing it all together, the traders on the stalls at Shambles Market will feed your diet with everything your resolution promised.

Let’s Get Physical

It’s well known that in the month of January gyms fill up with folk keen to keep their new year’s resolution to exercise more. For some, it’s the start of a healthier active life, for others the motivation meanders and the membership ends. But don’t worry if that’s you, because there are plenty of enjoyable ways to get fit in York.

There aren’t many better places in the UK to cycle, so a new year’s resolution to get on your bike is a surefire success. With routes around the city centre and paths out into the suburbs and countryside, cycling around York is a practical and fun way to exercise - solo or with friends or family of all ages. And there are plenty of exceptional experts to equip you in this bike-friendly city: Cycle Heaven in Fulford is the largest cycling store in North Yorkshire, plus they have others conveniently located at York Station and Bishopthorpe Road. Independent favourite Cycleworks will help you select the right Mountain Bike, Commuter Bike or E-Bike. And Feather Cycles is run by cycling obsessive Ricky who makes fabulous bespoke custom bicycles for enthusiasts new and old.

Don’t just talk the talk about your resolution, walk the walk. And where better to get out on your feet than in this beautiful city? You can take in the unique sights and historic sites whilst getting your steps in on one of York’s wondrous walks. Notably, walk the city walls, where you can take a pace and distance to suit your fitness whilst enjoying the nooks and views of York, and also have the option of being guided along the circular walkway by Friends of York Walls or various tours.

For something new and different, try walking the walls a little more literally. Red Goat Climbing Company provides the facilities to walk vertically up a wall in a safe and friendly environment. Bouldering is an increasingly popular hobby which increases strength and fitness whilst having fun and joining a welcoming communitythe perfect perks for a happy new year’s resolution.

Every year, York welcomes in the festive season with spectacular style. Venues and events across the city make a fantastic fuss for us all to enjoy - from Christmas markets and festive shows to lavish decorations and immersive experiences. Here are some of the best places to visit to get into the Christmas spirit.

The headline event that has been attracting thousands of visitors to York city centre for over two decades returns: from 14th November to 22nd December, York Christmas Market transforms Parliament Street and St Sampson's Square into a festival of Christmas. Over 70 chalets line the streets selling festive cheers and seasonal treats. Loads of local goodies can be picked up here for those unique gifts, with a mince pie in one hand and a mulled wine in the other. But save some room for some Christmas chocolate, as York’s Chocolate Story is indulging in a festive extravaganza from 1st to 26th December. There’s chocolate making with Santa, a chocolate masterclass, truffle rolling and a Christmas family workshop; irresistible for all ages.

Perfect Pantomimes

Favourite traditions that come either side of the big day are what gets everyone in the Christmas mood, and surely one of the biggest and best is the festive pantomime. York is home to two of the most beautiful theatres anywhere, and they once again are the unmissable settings for the perfect panto. York Theatre Royal spooks us out with Ghost Stories For Christmas from 25th November to 5th December before the magic carpet ride of Aladdin takes flight from 3rd December to 5th January. Meanwhile, York Opera House brings the enchanting fairytale of Beauty and the Beast to their stage from 7th December to 5th January in a must-see production. The familiar family fun of these ever evolving shows epitomise the Christmas spirit: always different, always the same. Always excellent. Eat, Drink and Be Merry

The Best of Christmas Past

The beautiful historic buildings of York are the perfect settings to celebrate a traditional Christmas. Stunning spaces at several of these landmarks are being magnificently decorated to take us back to bygone eras. The history of Treasurer’s House comes to life from 16th November to 18th December with An Inspired Christmas. Witness friendship, gratitude, architectural excellence, design and a floral tribute, all influenced by the man most responsible for restoring and preserving Treasurer’s House, Frank Green. The splendour of Fairfax House is elevated even further by incredible installations influenced by the 18th century and loved in the 21st. From mid November to the end of December you can experience a Georgian Christmas at this wonderfully unique visit. And York Museum Trust show us to the best Victorian Christmas at York Castle Museum from 16th November to 5th January. Outside, Kirkgate twinkles, and come inside to warm up on immersive experiences in the renowned period rooms that are dressed to impress. Plus Victorian carol singers, a Green Father Christmas, and theatre performances bring feasts, games, dancing, songs and joy to everyone.

Turning the Pages of York

Helen Smith is Professor of Renaissance Literature at the University of York and Director of working letterpress studio Thin Ice Press. She tells us the story and significance of printing and bookselling in York.

Printing and bookselling in York have a long and important history. Even before the advent of print, York supported a lively trade in bookselling and copying. It was also one of the first four cities in the UK to embrace the new technology of printing with movable type. There has been printing in York since at least the 1490s, but for roughly a century the presses of York fell silent - until, during the Civil Wars, King Charles I fled to York and holed up with his printer in St William's College. When Parliament set out an Act to restrict printing in 1642, York was explicitly excluded from the ban, and printing has continued in the city ever since.

There are lots of highlights in York's printing and bookselling history - including the first surviving book printed in York, which dates back to 1510; the entrepreneurial widows who ran printing and bookselling businesses; the publication of the first two volumes of Laurence Sterne's groundbreaking novel, Tristram Shandy; and the adventures of Thomas Gent, who ventured out on to the frozen River Ouse with a makeshift printing press in the winter of 1740. At Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print, we're proud to celebrate this heritage, including the history and legacy of DeLittle of York, who were the last surviving wood type manufacturers in the UK.

You can spot marks of York's printing and bookselling history dotted around the city: look out for the statue of Minerva sitting with her heaps of books at the corner of High Petergate and Minster Gates, the Yorkshire Herald sign still on the walls of City Screen, and the Sign of the Bible and the red Printer's Devil both on Stonegate. Stonegate was the designated area for print-shops and book stores. At No. 33 the red devil was showcased to advertise the local printing press. The dark arts were often associated with this occupation because operators would have blackened fingers from the ink, which was symbolised by the demon. At 35 Stonegate, Francis Hildyard opened a bookshop in 1682 known as ‘At the Sign of the Bible’. From 1762 until 1811, it was a library and bookshop owned by John Todd, and to this day the sign still hangs above the entrance.

York is a really important place for the UK's book scene. Every September, the city hosts the York National Book Fair, which is one of the largest rare and antiquarian book fairs in the world. The city is home to some brilliant secondhand, antiquarian and independent bookshops, including Minster Gate Books, Lucius Books, and Janette Ray Booksellers. It also hosts the York Antiquarian Book Seminar, which provides vital training to booksellers, librarians and collectors. York Minster Library stocks over 120,000 volumes on all sorts of subjects. And York Explore opens up books and reading to people across and beyond the city. There's also a lively small press scene bubbling in York, and the city still boasts several printing firms. At Thin Ice Press, we’re on our way to setting up as a social venture, helping to ensure the future of traditional printing and printmaking techniques. It's no exaggeration to say that York is one of the most important destinations in the UK, and maybe even in the world, for anyone who loves books!

@thinicepress

Over the 55 years since our shop was founded, the number of bookshops in York has undergone some considerable changes. There were just five shops operating in 1975 of which only the Minster Gate Bookshop remains today. Over time new shops opened to replace older establishments and by the mid 1980's there were a total of ten secondhand and antiquarian bookshops in the centre of York. At the turn of the century, with the growth of the internet, many secondhand booksellers around the country closed their shops to operate from home. Nevertheless, York has survived the revolution in online bookselling pretty well, with seven secondhand shops still thriving in the centre.

@minstergatebookshop

Minster Gate Books is an iconic shop which has been selling antiquarian and secondhand books to the people of York since 1970. Owner Nigel Wallace expanded it over the years from a single front room to fill seven rooms of books across four floors. Nigel explains how bookshops have evolved to keep York’s historic literary tradition alive.

Our shop in Minster Gates is situated on a small street which has a long and continuous association with books. John Foster operated as a bookseller from Minster Gates in 1580-1607 and inventory for the stock is still in existence. The street was known as Bookbinder’s Alley (and before that Bookland Lane) when the area became a bustling centre of printing and bookselling. On the corner of Minster Gates is a statue of Minerva, the Roman goddess of wisdom, reclining against a pile of books. Appropriately, it was bookseller Francis Wolstenholme - host of the 19th century literary society York Book Club - who erected this statue in the eaves of his shop.

A family business is doing impressive things to keep the future of bookshops alive and thriving. Toppings currently has shops in Ely, Bath, St Andrews and Edinburgh - and will be coming to York in Autumn 2025. Saskia Topping tells us all about it…

Robert and Louise Topping set up their first bookshop in Ely in 2002, assisted by their children Hugh and Cornelia, who years later are an integral part of the business. I began working for Robert at the start of 2019 and loved the ideology behind his bookshops: giving each bookseller the power to choose and manage their own section, run their own events, and buy in their own stock. He believes in the merit of stocking a book you believe in forever, regardless of whether or not it sells particularly well - which I think is a wonderfully eccentric position to hold as a business owner! The family philosophy has remained steadfast throughout: a belief in the transformational power of books and the warm personal relationships between booksellers and supporters who share that same love of books. At its heart, there is a desire to reinstate booksellers as key figures in their communities and cities.

Our York bookshop-to-be is in a grand, historic building on the corner of Museum Street and Blake Street. It's a real joy to breathe new life into these brilliant buildings which have been lying empty, and to bring communities through their doors. It will span multiple floors all featuring our handcrafted bookcases, signature rolling library ladders, and space for over 80,000 titles on the shelves. Our focus will be on offering an exceptional browsing experience, with complimentary pots of fresh tea and coffee, reading groups, and plenty of friendly, bookish advice and recommendations. I have no doubt that we will be bringing more authors, readers and book lovers into York, and that will be a benefit to the city and all its marvellous independent bookshops.

WHAT’S GOING ON

Have you ever wondered how the Vikings entertained themselves during the coldest months of the year? Or which Victorian Christmas traditions are still popular today? If so, you might find the answers in York. This December, two of the city’s attractions are offering a chance to experience Christmas past. Snow has fallen on Jorvik’s streets, recreating what the city might have looked, smelt and sounded like during a 10th century winter. Meanwhile, the Victorian shops at York Castle Museum have been trimmed with

EMBARK

ON A WINTER ADVENTURE AT JORVIK

For the first time in its 40-year history, York’s famous Viking attraction has been given a seasonal makeover. Until February, visitors can take a ride through a snowy recreation of the 10th century city while learning how its residents would have kept themselves warm, fed and entertained during the winter months.

festive foliage to celebrate yuletide - you might even spot a traditional green Father Christmas or Ebenezer Scrooge on the cobbles. Looking ahead to 2025, York will be getting a luxurious new place to stay. The Banana Warehouse on Piccadilly is being converted by the Axcel Group into a 168-bedroom hotel that will incorporate the building’s iconic original facade and reuse the Banana Warehouse name. Here’s more of what’s going on in York:

RED GOAT KITCHEN SERVES ‘BRITAIN’S BEST PIZZA’

A York restaurant has beat more than 400 others across the country to be named as the maker of ‘Britain’s Best Pizza’. Red Goat Kitchen off Layerthorpe won the competition run by Arla Pro for their ‘Mountaineer’ pizza. To accompany the coveted award, its chefs also received a £5K cash prize and a pizza masterclass with Marco Fuso.

STUDENTS LAUNCH SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

FOR PROMGOERS

Students at Huntington School have found a creative way to ensure that everyone can attend their prom in style. They’re taking donations of formal wear, which students in year 11 and 13 will be able to borrow. It’s hoped the ‘Dress 2 Impress’ initiative will promote sustainable fashion while helping to reduce any financial strain caused by the occasion.

EXPERIENCE A VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS AT YORK CASTLE MUSEUM

Visitors to York Castle Museum can now step back in time to witness the period in which many of our Christmas traditions began. Carol singers, a green Father Christmas and even Ebenezer Scrooge can be spotted in its snow-lined Victorian street. There will also be storytelling and seasonal craft workshops for adults and children alike.

LOCAL TRANSPORT STRATEGY AIMS TO REDUCE CAR JOURNEYS BY 20%

City of York Council has shared the targets it needs to meet over the next six years in order to reduce carbon emissions from transport by 71% by 2040. These include doubling the number of trips taken on foot or by bike, increasing bus and train travel by 50% and reducing car journeys by a fifth.

ZOOPLA REVEALS YORK IS LEAST AFFORDABLE CITY OUTSIDE SOUTHERN ENGLAND

The online property portal Zoopla has revealed that York is the country’s least affordable city to buy a home in outside of the south. Its research shows that 61% of working households in York can’t afford to buy a two or three-bed home in the city with a 80% loan-to-value mortgage. This is compared to 40% nationally.

NEW STUDENT ACCOMMODATION PLANNED

FOR HESLINGTON

An 18th-century building in Heslington could be turned into student accommodation. If plans go ahead, 5 Main Street and the 1960s office block that sits behind it will be converted to create 18 studio bedrooms and four shared flats. The offices, known as The Hive, will also get a new look as part of the scheme.

UNIVERSITY

RESEARCHERS EXPLORE BENEFITS OF FOREST SCHOOLS

A Yorkshire research project is examining how Forest Schools might help to boost children’s mental health. A team led by the University of York and Humber Teaching NHS Foundation will identify the most useful aspects of Forest Schools for primary-aged children in KS2. It will also look at how schools might be supported to introduce these.

HISTORIC YORK BUILDING TO BECOME

NEW HOTEL WITH AN OLD NAME

One of Piccadilly’s oldest buildings will soon become a luxury hotel, but it will keep its original name. The Banana Warehouse was built in 1925 to store and ripen the fruit. Now, it’s being turned into a 168-bedroom hotel by the Axcel Group, who also plan to reuse the building’s historic facade.

REMOVABLE FLOOD DEFENCES APPROVED FOR TOWER STREET

A scheme from the Environment Agency will see removable barriers used to protect the area surrounding Tower Street in the event of flooding. Retaining walls placed near the York Crown Court embankment will support the temporary barriers, which will be moved into place when needed to prevent water from the River Ouse reaching the River Foss.

NETHER POPPLETON BARNS COULD BE MADE INTO HOMES

Disused barns at a family-owned farm in Nether Poppleton could be turned into housing. The barns at the rear of Church Lane will become two new homes with two more being erected alongside them. These will have garages and cycle storage, and will incorporate features that ‘complement the local vernacular’.

Ten Poor York Widows

Ingram’s Almshouse is the most important mid-seventeenth century building on Bootham. With thanks to Peter Brown MBE, former director of York Civic Trust and contributor for York Conservation Trust, here’s the unique story of a site still standing strong today.

On the north road out of York, in Bootham, stands an impressive brick and stone building. Built between 163032 by Sir Arthur Ingram, a Yorkshireman from near Leeds who had made his money by various means, fair or foul, and used it to acquire land.

The immensely wealthy Sir Arthur was granted the right to fell most of the 7,600 acres of the Galtres Forest in this area of York for arable development. In order to counter the many local complaints regarding these enclosures, he thought it a useful concession to the City Corporation to build this Almshouse.

Ingram’s Almshouse was intended for ‘ten poor York widows’. The widows who would live here were selected by Sir Arthur Ingram and his family, and the candidates were likely to be related in some way to the workforce employed on his five estates.

The accommodation for the widows consisted of a living room 12x18 feet, with an open fire and a narrow staircase set to the side of the fire stack, giving access to an unheated bedroom. Outside, in a large garden to the rear, were privies, a well, and allotments for the residents. The widows each received a regular stipend, a new gown every three years and a silver-gilt badge bearing the Ingram crest, a cock. Their income could also be supplemented by hemp spinning.

Remarkably, the building’s accounts survive in the Ingram papers at Temple Newsam, Sir Arthur’s country seat near Leeds. The building takes the form of a single row of two-storey dwellings with a chapel in the centre below a square tower. A simple but elegant arrangement, all standing on a stone plinth that reused blocks acquired from the ruins of St Mary’s Abbey.

It is also remarkable that the building survived the 1644 siege of York during the first English Civil War, given that most of the buildings along Bootham were taken down to prevent use by the approaching Parliamentarian troops. Perhaps the tall central tower functioned as a useful look-out for the defending Royalists. Also being a charity may have spared it, as was the case for other hospitals near to Micklegate Bar.

In 1957, the property was acquired by the Ings Trust, the forerunner of York Conservation Trust, and converted into five apartments. This has ensured the continuation of Ingram’s Almshouse, preserving this important late medieval building and giving it a new lease of life.

Tales from the Most Haunted City

York Ghost Merchants’ Angus McArthur introduces the most haunted city and its many ghost stories

Have you ever walked along the Shambles on a misty November morning at daybreak, or down Lady Peckett’s Yard in the early hours? There is a tangible connection with the past and an undeniable sense of those who have walked those flagstones before us. With a turbulent history spanning thousands of years and a compact, atmospheric medieval city centre dominated by the gothic presence of the Minster, the city of York provides a fertile context for hauntings and the telling of ghost stories.

Before the written word, these stories were etched into memory, passed down through generations, carried on the wind. Ghost stories have been told and re-told for centuries in this ancient city, such tales now form the obscure yet unquestionable reputation that York has as the most haunted city in Europe, perhaps even the world…

Ghost Stories are tales of human drama; betrayal, unrequited love, neglect, and persecution. They often serve many purposes; to entertain, to frighten, but also as a message or reminder of mortality. They frequently unearth societal injustices and uncomfortable truths. The re-telling of such tales helps to connect us with those who have passed this way before us, guiding us hopefully to a better future.

Stick Man: a York ghost story told by Dorian Deathly of Deathly Dark Tours

About halfway up Stonegate as you head towards York Minster, just after Ye Olde Starre Inne sign you will find number thirty five. It’s a very elegant building dating back to the early 1300s, with major works happening with each passing century. It was once the home of HAUNTED, a ghostly attraction which occupied the building from 2007 to 2014. Several ghosts are said to haunt the house, my personal favourite is sometimes referred to as simply ‘Stick Man’.

An elderly gentleman once lived in the house and he constantly feared that burglars would creep into his home late at night, so would regularly hammer the walls next to his bed with a walking stick, particularly when the cathedral bells struck midnight. He believed that the noise would frighten away any wrong-doers.

After he passed away, the knocking is still heard! Sometimes in the adjoining rooms of number 33, but most commonly in the bedroom that was next to his in number 35 itself. Rather creepily, the room next to his became known as ‘The Séance Room’ when HAUNTED was trading there. Mid séance, guests would hear the stick hammering against the walls in answer to their questions. Spooky stuff.

The Haunting of 45 Goodramgate: a York ghost story told by

The wandering spectre of Marmaduke Buckle can be found in The Snickleway Inn and La Piazza on Goodramgate, where he lived between 1697 and 1715. Marmaduke had a severe physical disability, and his wealthy family offered him little protection when others accused him of witchcraft. Hidden away and persecuted, poor Marmaduke carved 1697, his birth date, and 1715, his death date, into a beam and hung himself.

A Fairer City for All

Leader of the City of York Council, Councillor Claire Douglas looks back on 2024 and forward to 2025.

York is a fantastic city and one I’m honoured and proud to have been elected to lead. It’s a great place to live for most, but unfortunately not all its residents. It’s this simple fact that drives my administration and the policies we want to implement.

In seeking to make the city more inclusive we rolled back the Blue Badge holder city centre access ban this January. This wasn’t an easy decision, but it was the right one. The next challenge is to deliver access 52 weeks a year, reconciling this right to access with public safety for this Christmas market and beyond.

Good transport is crucial to accessing jobs and to a healthy economy. We’ve made good progress in developing a plan for how people move around, away from piecemeal measures to a long overdue ‘whole city’ approach. With thousands of new homes over the next decade we must reduce the number of driven miles and improve public transport options for residents, or the city will simply seize up. These changes should also mean we all breathe cleaner air.

Delivering more affordable and better insulated housing is also key to better health and a fairer city. York’s first development plan in over 70 years is imminent and will kickstart desperately needed major housing development. Combined with the council developing 100% affordable housing on its own land, and working hard to improve its existing housing, we’re optimistic about what this means for our city. Too many residents are excluded from the basic right of a decent, warm home and our plans for the city will help to reverse this.

An early step we took to help with affordability was introducing a universal free school lunch pilot in Westfield as well as trialling free breakfasts in a primary school in Clifton. There is much more work to be done and we’re optimistic of two further schools being added in the next tranche, following a positive recent report on the educational benefits of the trial.

With major housing development and York Central both getting underway, we also want to create new job opportunities by developing the green construction skills that will play a key role in our future economy. We’re especially keen to match up job opportunities like this with residents in communities who haven’t seen themselves having a stake in the city.

It remains a hugely challenging time for Local Government, but we remain determined to make the changes we know our residents want to see, changes that will make York a more inclusive city in which everyone can thrive.
