Micklegate Bar by Allan T Adams
Allan T Adams is an architectural illustrator in York and recently retired from Historic England. Our cover image is Allan’s illustration of Heraldry at Micklegate Bar: “I was happy with the pencil drawing as it was, so I made a print and decided that colouring would be a good idea. The emblems would have been painted from the moment they were made, and it would show that medieval York wasn’t just stone and wood colour. The Royal Arms stylistically dates the upper storeys of the gatehouse to 1350-75. The contemporary arms of York are amongst the earliest depictions of the five lions on a cross of St George to survive in situ, the original Royal Charter being granted in 1215.

Ciao York!
La Bottega Milanese has been bringing a taste of Italy to Yorkshire for 15 years. By serving superb coffees, they became a favourite in Leeds from their two city sites, and have recently elevated this strong legacy into an even finer future - which starts by saying “Ciao York!” Katia Pereira took over La Bottega in 2022, and has already evolved her favourite coffee shop into something that more people can experience. Retaining the essence and expertise of what Leeds loved, she’s made subtle and sympathetic additions to perfect the style, the service and the produce. And now, this Milanese lifestyle is coming to York.
Opening in the city centre on New Street, La Bottega is an authentic espresso bar which offers every reason to visit. You can drop in for a quality caffeine hit courtesy of their ethically sourced custom blend La Classica; you can settle down to some delicious bites, from great cakes to Italian street food; you can drink up from a selection of Italian classics - Amari, Prosecco, Beers, Wines and Spritz; and you can get social by meeting friends in the handsome and relaxed surroundings.
“If it’s not from Italy it’s from Yorkshire” they exclaim, and the two cultures marry together harmoniously here. Italian cakes and fine meats are joined by local fruit and veg and bakes of bread and croissants, fresh and from Yorkshire’s best producers. As La Bottega Milanese arrives saying “Ciao York”, York is happy to respond: “Welcome Milan”.

The Savvy Baker
"I started baking for the first time in lockdown for friends and family, dropping off care packages, and everyone loved them! I’ve always had a business mind but never knew what business I would start - then this fell into place perfectly! The Savvy Baker was created and within a month I had hundreds of orders a week - friends were delivering parcels, helping me pack, bake, cut, the demand was so high!! Almost 5 years later, we have 4 shops and an online store.
We pride ourselves on high quality ingredients: our brownies and blondies are all hand made with love in Leeds by our amazing team; we use locally roasted North Star coffee and Greyleys Jersey milk to create the creamiest coffee. Our drink specials are unique and change throughout the seasons; for autumn we welcome S'mores hot chocolate, Biscoff latte, white chocolate and pistachio latte and maple spiced lattesyou can have any of these drinks iced or hot. We're always thinking up new bakes and drink ideas.
York is so different to any of our other locations, the sense of community and local indie businesses is unmatched. Plus it's the only city where we meet hundreds of customers from all over the world that are visiting York! We have lots of regulars already - customers love the brownies and will try a different flavour every time they come in. Plus our takeaway cups and carriers and cute boxes are very insta worthy!"

Marrakesh
"I came to York about 20 years ago, initially working between 16 and 17 hours a day in hotel management. About 8 years ago I started Middle Feast on Lendal. From this Middle East inspired small business we then introduced an Italian restaurant called Enoteca on Bridge Street. Next step was to launch Marrakesh, a Moroccan restaurant.
Everything we do at Marrakesh comes from Morocco, and we have some Moroccan chefs to ensure the dishes are authentic. The food is made from scratch always with fresh ingredients and passion. Our tagines - including lamb, chicken and a sweet tagine with fruit - really bring out the flavours; it tastes like when you go on holiday.
As well as the food, our designer has made the restaurant look like it’s come straight out of Morocco. We’ve gone out of our way to get everything from there so it feels real. This building when we got it, from the cellar to the first floor, was in a real state - we have put everything into refurbishing this and making sure the food is perfect so that people want to come back again and again."

Gelato!
"My passion started when I was 12 or 13, working at my parents’ ice cream parlour in Bridlington whilst I was at High School. I started cleaning soft serve machines out on a night pretty much each weekend.
After that, I always wanted to make my own ice cream rather than buy it in, and in 2015 I had an opportunity to set a little business up with my mom. I went to Palermo and Bologna on training classes - it was a great experience to learn how to make ice cream properly. I picked up the skills to make it from all natural ingredients, and learnt how to form and balance recipes of the textures and flavours from scratch.
Our gelato is different to ice cream as it’s lower in fat sugar and it's got less air in it, so it's denser. It’s also served at a warmer temperature so the flavour is more intense and it's paired with fresh milk and cream. We get all our milk and cream from Greyleys Jersey farmer in Elvington just outside York. Where possible, we get all our fresh ingredients such as the fruit locally.
YORK TALKS
We change flavours regularly to reflect the seasons. In summer there were a lot more fruity flavours, and now as we move into the autumn it’ll be richer flavours. And then at Christmas, festive flavours such as Christmas pudding, mince pie, Turkish delight and amaretto.
I’m introducing a seating area in the back of Gelato! We’ll be doing hot chocolates, waffles and desserts such as Sundaes. It will be open in November and hopefully will be popular."

Bar Hashery
"We are independent chain owners Jolanta and Prafful who started this journey two years ago. The idea of having a small cosy cafe was always at the back of our heads, but we were too young to take the challenge to change our life. We were both working in the hospitality industry for years, learning what to do and what not to do!
When the opportunity came to own Bar Hashery, we knew how we wanted it to look and what people would take with them from each visit. We’re both food and coffee lovers, and we like quality - especially when it comes to what we put into ourselves. So, at Bar Hashery we have to deliver quality, from the moment guests come through the doors until they leave. That’s what drives us.
Our ethos is about coming back to basics. What we cannot make we don't sell; we do not sell what we would not eat and drink ourselves. We use a lot of organic, local produce to create our dishes and everything we make is from scratch. And we treat our customers as guests in our own home - this applies to all our places: cafe, kiosk and bakery.
YORK TALKS
We recently opened our bakery because I was always baking at home, trying different methods, and we wanted to uplift our own products. This year we also opened a coffee kiosk at York train station which helps us achieve our aim - welcoming everyone to York. We love York - it’s a unique city with massive support from locals - and we cannot think of any other place we could’ve started this journey from."

Autumn Afternoon Tea at Bettys
Bettys’ Kat Gladders tells us about the legendary Yorkshire business and why we should visit their beautiful York Tearooms for Afternoon Tea this Autumn
Bettys has been a family business ever since it opened back in 1919. Our founder, Frederick Belmont was a Swiss Baker and Confectioner who came to Yorkshire in 1907 with a dream of opening his own business; little did he know the incredible legacy he would create! Bettys blends together the Swiss precision with genuine Yorkshire warmth and welcome; our products are created at our Craft Bakery in Harrogate, and we have five Branches throughout Yorkshire – each with its own unique and beautiful surroundings.
In 1937 Bettys York was the fourth Branch to open, though it’s now the oldest original site. The ground floor Tearoom is our most famous level, with windows looking out onto St Helens Square, and our lower floor dining room – the Oakroom – is a cosy panelled dining room steeped in history. The building has a real Art Deco influence which is apparent through its railings, stained glass, and especially in the first floor Belmont Room, where we host our reservationonly Luxury Afternoon Tea.
Afternoon Tea originated in the mid1800s as a way to bridge the gap between lunch and dinner, and is seen as a quintessentially British pastime. For delighted tourists visiting York, people celebrating occasions, or treating themselves and loved ones, there’s something about the traditional tea service and sight of various delights on a silver cake stand that evokes real joy when served. It’s a core part of our menu, and at Bettys we stay close to the traditional set up.
We have two options available – our Afternoon Tea which is a selection of sandwiches, scone with clotted cream and preserve, three miniature cakes and a pot of Tea. This is very popular and served all day. We also have our bookable Luxury Afternoon Tea in the Belmont Room, which has the addition of two savoury items before you start on the stand, and then a variety of seasonal sandwiches, scones with clotted cream and preserve, beautiful patisserie and a variety of different teas - all to the relaxing background of our live piano player.
Our Afternoon Tea changes seasonally, so you can enjoy the Autumn flavours and look forward to our Festive variation which will arrive in November. There is nowhere more magical at Christmas than Bettys, so keep an eye for our amazing Christmas window, as well as the arrival of our fantastic products – chief among them the Mince Pie!

York Unlocked
Founder Kathy King tells us all about York Unlocked ahead of their weekend exploring York’s fascinating buildings and spaces
The idea behind York Unlocked came when I lived in London. In 1991, something started called London Open House, where one weekend every year they would open amazing buildings. You'd see people getting excited, going into these magnificent buildings that were almost derelict before they become something else. I was there and saw it grow and grow. It spread to 33 boroughs and now has about 800 buildings.
When I came to York I realised the chocolate factories had gone and I could never get inside one to see how it used to be. That was sad for me - there's a moment in time when you get to look at something before it changes significantly. But I'm also a fan of modern architecture, and I think York presents an interesting dilemma where you have this small, medieval Viking city, which to remain fit for purpose needs to change and grow. That can be a conflict for the people in York.
I moved here six years ago and was awed by the big hitting stuff like York Minster, the City Walls and Shambles. There are nearly 2000 listed buildings in York and over time you realise there's so much more to discover. So many buildings have got more in them and more to them. There's a lot of the city you never get to see and it’s exciting to find out about those things.
York Unlocked is a charity, we’re non-political, noncampaigning; we’d never say ‘I don't like that building’ and we try to add modern content to the history. We've got architect tours of the Coney Street Riverside Development, as well as historic places like the Library and Assembly Rooms. I've had people say they’ve been into that Library loads of times and have never noticed how magnificent it is, or they’ve passed the Assembly Rooms for years and have never been in. You don't stop and take time to look - our weekends give you permission to do that, get curious and be nosy in the city.
This year’s weekend event on the 5th and 6th October is free to explore over 50 interesting and significant buildings, experience familiar places through fresh eyes and uncover hidden treasures. Everyone should be able to see these key buildings and we want to make sure an event like this is reaching different people. There’s definitely a sense that people are grateful for the opportunity and they respect the spaces we go into.
We're opening a private house in Micklegate, Garforth House. There’s Holy Trinity on Goodramgate and King's Manor. Also, Marygate Tower on the corner of Marygate and Bootham which was very popular last year - people loved it, an extraordinary and lovely spot. And this year at York Station, which is a magnificent building, we’ve got the Station Master's Office which is above the York Tap, and also the Ballroom above The Duke of York.
One thing I realised putting this program together is there are so many interesting little gardens in the city centre: the Garden of the Medical Society and at the Oratory on Duncan Street; St Anthony Gardens and Bishopthorpe Walled Garden. There are all these beautiful little pockets of green space that you can get access to on this weekend that you wouldn't expect. I love that.
We allow it to happen on people's own terms, to be about experiencing the architecture and feel what it's like inside there. Then you can enjoy it however you please. Lots of people come with their family, and kids love things like the stuffed cat in the Mansion House, and all the quirky stories that bring to life the joy of history. You can understand it on any of those levels and enjoy this journey of discovering these fascinating York buildings.

UNESCO City of Media Arts Expo
In our last issue, Cherie Federico told us all about the positive significance of York’s status as a UNESCO City of Media Arts. Her media organisation Aesthetica produce the BAFTAQualifying Aesthetica Film Festival, Aesthetica Art Prize in partnership with York Art Gallery, and publish Aesthetica Magazine. In the past year, Aesthetica also launched their Reignite campaign, a series of events focusing on the economic impact of the creative industries and media arts in York. Working harmoniously with UNESCO to create and access opportunities in media arts here in York, there are some important and exciting events coming up in the city. Cherie tells us more about November’s UNESCO City of Media Arts Expo during the Aesthetica Short Film Festival.
“The UNESCO City of Media Arts EXPO is a significant catalyst for the Creative Industries on a national and international level. The EXPO is an unparalleled opportunity to experience cuttingedge work, forge strategic partnerships and meet the future creators in the UK’s Creative Industries. York is one of 25 cities worldwide - and the only city in the UK - that was selected by UNESCO because of its outputs in Media Arts. Other global destinations that share this status include Austin, Texas; Sapporo, Japan; and Toronto, Canada. Our outputs in York are on a par with these global destinations. Aesthetica has been actively working with a range of city-wide partners to drive progression routes and pathways into the Creative Industries.
York is a Vibrant Centre of Media Arts
The UNESCO City of Media Arts Expo is a dynamic marketplace for innovative ideas and facilitating collaboration. Nationally and internationally, the EXPO elevates the creative industries, demonstrating the power of its economic contribution of £109 billion pounds to the UK economy annually, and with 2.3 million people employed in the sector, we mean business.
York is a leader in the creative economy and our cultural significance is on a global scale. Set within the programme of this year’s Aesthetica Film Festival, the Expo showcases the exceptional work being delivered by media arts and creative businesses who are based in region, often with a global reach. In addition to connecting filmmakers, developers and screen executives attending the festival with businesses that deliver the services they need, the Expo will also focus double up and act as a catalyst to support the next generation of talent, career progressions and educational pathways.”

The Last Ghost Merchant
York has a reputation for being the most haunted city in Europe, perhaps even the world. There is a rich tradition here of ghost story telling which stretches back for many centuries. Ghosts are an integral yet undeniable obscure part of our city’s story.
The York Ghost Merchants are only ghost merchants still trading within the city walls in the twenty-first century and are the makers of the original York ghosts; each one created by the hands of skilled makers from workshops in the heart of the city. On the medieval Shambles, where once the blood and guts of slaughterhouses ran, in a building centuries old is their original shop with workshop above. A continuation of generations of traditional makers and traders; candlemakers, chandlers, cutlers, silversmiths, milliners, bootmakers… and now, the last ghost makers.
Founder Angus McArthur is keen to emphasise the importance that the act of making plays in their peculiar business.
“We are carrying on a tradition of making within the city walls and that is central to the York Ghost Merchants ideology. Small scale manufacturing was at the centre of many towns and cities prior to the industrial revolution. The clog maker on the Shambles would have made the clogs which were sold from their shop, the act of making and selling has largely been lost from our high streets, instead goods are shipped in from wholesalers from all over the world. For us to move forwards with our business we looked backwards; The Ghost Merchants is built on rather old-fashioned principles.”
The shop, located at No.6 Shambles, was built in the late
eighteenth century, at first glance a compact shop with clear Georgian proportions and an interior of panelled walls and display cases. But from the moment intrigued customers step across the threshold, it becomes clear that this is a place where heritage and legend overlap to intriguing effect. This is an enchanting and memorable place, where you’ll surely be awed by the remarkable collection of over 600 handmade ghosts, each one different, and leave with a beautifully boxed keepsake like no other. The Merchants who work here, dressed in traditional attire, topped off with the signature brown bowler hats offer the informative, old-fashioned customer service.
The delightful Dispensary Shop located within the tranquillity of St Anthony’s Garden now offers customers the chance to buy Ghosts away from the hustle and bustle of the Shambles and often without the lengthy queues which gather from opening time outside the original Ghost Merchants shop.
“We are so very fortunate that we have customers who travel to York from all over the world just to visit our shops and to choose a Ghost of their own to take back home. In a challenging time for face to face retail we are so grateful that we have such a dedicated and supportive community of customers which has grown with us over the years.”
The Ghost Merchants have previously proclaimed that a shop must be more than a shop, and so as has been tradition since the year they began trading, The York Ghost Merchants host the annual Ghost Week. This is an event which is dedicated to exploring and celebrating the city’s longstanding links with ghosts. This year, from Saturday 26th October to Sunday 3rd November there are a series of events across the city. All ages can engage with this inclusive festival through an array of events, many of which are free to experience.
Partnering with people and places has enabled The York Ghost Merchants to produce a packed programme; you can explore mysteries at Mansion House for The Haunting of Hudson and at Fairfax House for Annus Horribilis; walk the city walls at night at Twilight Walls; go to Ghosts in the Graveyard for ghost stories at St Saviours Church; meet resident spirits on a tour of Holy Trinity Church; and immerse in the powerful ghost-story of The Signal Man through a one man play at York Medical Society.
The York Ghost Merchants’ own events are equally enticing; The Tavern Passport encourages Ghost Week visitors to sample some of York’s most atmospheric public houses famed for their ghosts – collect stamps in your Ghost Week Tavern passport to enable the purchase of the rare Tavern ghost; The Cabinet of Curiosity Ghosts are five truly unique ghosts and are to be raffled for charities, see them at 60 Goodramgate; ghost collectors have the opportunity to meet up and swap ghosts at Bedern Hall, where there is also a ‘Ringing the Ghost’ contest; there will be the first opportunity to purchase a limited edition Black Box Ghost named The Jigger. These will be sold from a temporary trading post set up in the panelled front room of the 15th century Black Swan public house at Peasholme Green.
Perhaps the main attraction is The Little York Ghost hunt, where each evening 125 little ghosts are hidden along the atmospheric streets that flank the Minster, for you to seek and keep. Thousands now take part with torch in hand and the hope of finding an elusive Raggamuffin Ghost. This tradition of ghost-hunting in the city will surely continue for generations to come.
There are even more events than these throughout the week. Full details of the programme including ticketing information can be found on the York Ghost Merchants website under the Ghost Week heading in the menu.

WHAT’S GOING ON
Halloween is nearly here but York’s snickelways are about to get a little less spooky. The city’s famous passageways are one of its many charming features and now there’s a plan to make them cleaner and safer. York BID has applied to install zig-zag lighting across six snickelways, including Popes Head Alley, Coffee Yard and Lunds Court, to illuminate them day and night. A popular York leisure centre is also getting a modern makeover. Plans are in the
CALLS FOR FREE SCHOOL MEALS TO BECOME PERMANENT
A pilot funded by York City Council has seen all pupils at Westfield Community Primary School receive a free school lunch while children at Burton Green have been given breakfast. The scheme will continue until 2027 but there are hopes it could be made permanent and extended to all of the city’s 57 primary schools.
pipeline to prepare New Earswick Swimming Pool for the future with a major revamp that will include measures to increase sustainability and make the pool accessible for all. In other news, York Minster is currently on the lookout for new choristers, offering young singers an incredible opportunity to join one of the country’s top cathedral choirs and be taught at the prestigious St Peter’s School. Read on for more of what’s going on in York…
DESIGNS REVEALED FOR CASTLE GATEWAY
The regeneration of the area surrounding Clifford’s Tower could finally go ahead with a planning application being submitted early next year. The project, which has long been in the pipeline, would see the Castle Car Park replaced by ‘flexible green space’ with areas for play. Blue badge parking will remain.
YORK GALLERY OWNER TO TURN OLD CHAPEL INTO ART SCHOOL
Andres Jaroslavsky, the owner of Corner Studio, purchased the chapel in Stillingfleet in January. After a successful Crowdfunder campaign and prize draw, he has now secured funds to renovate the new community space. When finished, it will offer tuition in painting and drawing and will be available for use by groups like choirs and book clubs.

PLAN TO ILLUMINATE YORK’S SNICKELWAYS
York’s historic snickelways have long contributed to the city’s character, and now York BID hopes to make them safer with festoonstyle lighting. The LED lights will run in an attractive zig-zag pattern and will remain on day and night. The narrow passageways will also get cigarette bins and artwork featuring visitor information.
DAKOTA HOTEL TO BE BUILT ON ROUGIER STREET
A luxury hotel could be built where Northern House currently stands on Rougier Street. Following the proposed demolition of the office block, Dakota Hotels has submitted plans to build a 140-bed hotel of a similar height with a bar, dining areas and top floor terraces. It is expected to create around 125 jobs.
YORK
MINSTER LOOKING
FOR NEW CHORISTERS
Music-loving youngsters have the rare chance to join one of the country’s best cathedral choirs. York Minster will hold auditions next January for pupils who are currently in Year 3. No experience is required other than a ‘love of singing’ and the opportunity comes with a subsidised place at St Peter’s School.
CITY TO GET 24HOUR MENTAL HEALTH HUB
Struggling York residents will soon be able to get mental health support around the clock. York’s Mental Health Partnership (YMHP) and the Connecting our City project have secured £2.44 million to spend on a new mental health ‘hub’ in Acomb. It will offer 24-hour help to over 18s with no need for referral.
BILBROUGH WATER TOWER BE TRANSFORMED INTO
MODERN
HOME
If plans are approved, the disused water tower in Askham Richard could gain a single-storey ‘log cabin’-style extension, turning it into a three bedroom home. Architectural Services York say their proposed design takes cues from the existing structure, which will have some of its original openings reinstated as windows.
FLOATING WILDLIFE ISLAND COULD APPEAR ON OUSE
An artificial island could support wildlife and improve water quality if plans go ahead. Environmental charity St Nicks wants to install the floating structure, built by Biomatrix, on the river near North Street Gardens. It would be covered with native plants, providing a space for birds to nest and for fish to shelter and feed.
PLUSH CAFE LAUNCHES
MONTHLY LGBTQ+ EVENT
The Insta-worthy cafe on Stonegate launched its Pink Pony Club back in September. It provides an opportunity for the LGBTQ+ community and allies to socialise and have fun in a safe space. The club is held on the first Friday of every month from 6-9:30pm. Entry is free with cakes, coffee and cocktails available to buy.
NEW EARSWICK SWIMMING POOL TO GET UPDATE
The Friends of New Earswick Swimming Pool have submitted a planning application for the redevelopment of the 57-yearold pool. They want to prepare the building for the future with changes including the relocation of the spectator gallery, the creation of a village of mixed sex changing cubicles and the installation of solar panels and an air heat pump.
HOME OF INDEPENDENT FOOD, DRINK AND RETAIL
Rodizio is a traditional Brazilian style of service. We offer an authentic Brazilian experience, preparing the finest cuts of meat skewered and expertly cooked, which is then served and carved at the table side. Our salad bar includes salads and hot dishes which will offer something for everyone.
Minster Times
Alex McCallion, the Director of Works and Precinct at York Minster, brings us the latest on their neighbourhood plan for the Centre of Excellence for Heritage Craft Skills and Estate Management
We're nearing completion of the campus facilities; the Heritage Quad, which is down by the city walls, will house our stonemasons and first year apprentices, with uncillary facilities for our gardeners and scaffolders. We’ll also provide training here - the building's been designed to inspire the next generation of crafts people, so visitors to the city walls can look down and see the process of craft below them.
The Technology Hub is on the site of the former stone yard. This is now housing our state of the art cutting technology and where we program the machinery, which is helping us speed up the process of restoration and conservation. That’s the essence of what we're what we're doing, improving efficiencies and sustainability to protect the future of the Minster.
Surf & Turf
Experience the best of both with The Grand, York’s new offering that is as opulent at the hotel itself. A truly decadent Surf & Turf which is now available at the distinguished AA Rosette awarded Rise Restaurant and Terrace Bar at the hotel.
The perfect blend of land and sea, the delicious dish includes the hotel’s iconic beef wellington and full lobster thermidor platter and is served with a brilliant béarnaise sauce, rich beef jus and tantalising parsley mayonnaise. Guests also have the choice of two sumptuous sides from truffle and parmesan fries to charred summer vegetables with balsamic and basil oil.
Ideal for sharing with someone special, this dish promises an unforgettable dining experience!
