Cover - Merchants Hall by Ric Liptrot
Ric is a freelance illustrator based in York. His work is inspired by the historic architecture and abundance of independent shops, pubs and cafes in the city. Including this beautiful view of the Merchants Hall flanked by two fantastic independent businesses, The Hairy Fig and Kiosk. He believes these places play an important role to the local community as well as the economy and loves to celebrate them in his illustrations. He uses a combination of stencilled brickwork, collage and dip pen to create the artwork which begin with a pencil sketch made directly outside the building.

Despite the ongoing cost of living crisis, the city is showing promising signs of good things to come. Take a walk down its characterful cobbled streets and you’ll spot several businesses opening their doors for the first time, as well as old favourites taking on ambitious new ventures. It’s all happening on Grape Lane as popular seafood and game restaurant Fish & Forest prepares to move into the downstairs space that was the 1331 Bar & Grill. If you loved 1331, never fear. Its owners plan to launch a new restaurant on the building’s first floor that will specialise in delicious homemade sausages and mash.

Local Spirits Turning Heads
The story of Hooting Owl Distillery’s new venue in York’s city walls
Nestled within the historic city walls of York, a modern local drinks maker are turning heads with their award winning spirits. For 6 years, Hooting Owl Distillery have been producing premier artisan gins, vodkas and rums, supplying quality to bars such as Judge’s Lodgings and Pipe and Glass. Now, Hooting Owl are moving closer the people of York by the exciting opening of a prime new venue in the centre of the city, bringing the distillery together with a bar of their own.
Founder and Head
Dominic M’Benga tells us his plans to maintain and evolve the distillery whilst inviting the public in to enjoy it at source. “We’re the first licensed distillery ever in the city walls of York” he enthuses. “The distillery is the heart of the operation, building on our local heritage. Now people can see that in action.” The move is a welcome progression for what started out as “a hobby business” in the Yorkshire Wolds and has grown through an enviable reputation and exceptional output.
DistillerSo, what can we expect from Hooting Owl’s new venue? Well, there are plenty of reasons to visit, from morning until night, across two floors of a handsome site. “There's nothing in here that's accidental - everything means something and has a story behind it” Dom confirms about the design. This means the history and narrative of Hooting Owl is brought to life in fascinating ways; Dom’s own background is vast and varied - a Yorkshireman of African descent, he served as a corporal before becoming an award winning green innovator - all of which inspire Hooting Owl.
“The table top at the back of the lounge is the exact replica of the memorial stone at the National Memorial Arboretum for the principles of Yorkshire, which was my original Prince of Wales regiment” he explains. There will also be a “Victoria Cross Wall”, amongst other beautifully unique aesthetics which are in keeping with the care and inspiration behind everything that has made Hooting Owl what it is - many of their drinks nod to Dom’s ancestry, and his eco-credentials ensure the distillery focusses heavily on sustainability.
For York, the arrival of Hooting Owl brings the pleasures of morning coffees, afternoon pizzas, evening drinks and late night dancing. The distillery will be distilling from 8am, the cafe open from 10am; there’ll be al-fresco drinking and a roof terrace, gin tastings and distillery tours; local beers and wines and of course Hooting Owl spirits - which soon will extend to brandy and bourbon - can be enjoyed until 10:30pm; afterwards, a membership club allows private members to keep the fun going until 2:30am.
Epitomising the comfort and class that Hooting Owl brings to York, the 300 capacity venue will give people space by allowing approximate half of that in. “The idea is that everybody can have a comfortable seat; there'll be table service and people can expect quality” says Dom, before summarising the Hooting Owl’s main objective; “We want to create an experience and memories - because that's what it's all about.”
Spring in your Step
Great Spring walks in and around York
Now that we have eased out of Winter and leapt into Spring, nature is blooming all around York. There are endless outside spaces to explore and enjoy the season, from city centre sites to Yorkshire beauty spots. All within a half-hour journey, here are a few of our favourite ways to walk into the season with a Spring in your step.
York City Walls
Starting in the city centre, York’s city walls are an evocative sight at all times of the year. Walk them in the Spring and you’ll not only take in the fascinating history and the fabulous views, you’ll also get to see the abundance of daffodils colouring the city. You can walk it all in a couple of hours, or take in the parts you prefer. And whilst here, enjoy further city flowers at Clifford’s Tower and Museum Gardens.
Rowntree Park
Rowntree Park is a lovely piece of nature in the city. Just a 15 minute riverside stroll from the city centre, the lovely expanse has plenty of activities here, and is equally worthwhile for a gentle walk around. Having flooded during the Winter, the park had been closed since December, with the volunteer group Friends of Rowntree Park working admirably to Spring it back into life! Elsewhere in the city, York is blessed with greenery, as a walk at the beautiful 14 acre Homestead Park in Clifton confirms.
Castle Howard
The stunning stately home Castle Howard, located between York and the North York Moors, is open for the public to explore the impressive building and surroundings. From here, you can walk as you wish - the parkland circular is a 5 mile meander through lakes and monuments, with daffodils flourishing in the Spring. Further afield, the Howardian Hills are an area of outstanding natural beauty that offer miles of trails to wander and views to wonder.
Moorlands Nature Reserve
A short drive to a small woodland leads to an immense place of huge beauty. Moorlands Nature Reserve is part of the ancient Forest of Galtres and is ablaze with colour in Spring. Snowdrop, primrose, daffodil and bluebell form a backdrop to a succession of mature rhododendrons, azaleas and maple. Walk the circular route of over 5 miles to breathe in the nature and jump into Spring.
Beningbrough
Beningbrough is a National Trust site which provides a great day out for various reasons. Visit the enigmatic baroque house, explore the gallery of art exhibitions, and discover centuries of history; or simply enjoy the outside, where 8 acres including a new Mediterranean garden are a Spring joy. Follow the yellow way-markers on the circular walk from Beningbrough Hall, through woods and along the River Ouse, with sweeping views across the estate and a range of wildlife.
Rodizio is a traditional Brazilian style of service.
We offer an authentic Brazilian experience, preparing the finest cuts of meat skewered and expertly cooked, which is then served and carved at the table side.
Our salad bar includes salads and hot dishes which will offer something for everyone.

More Skosh
In the last decade, York’s food scene has been elevated by some talented chefs opening restaurants of the highest quality. At the forefront of this rise in fine dining was Neil Bentinck, an exceptional chef who opened Skosh here in 2016. His first ever restaurant brought together Neil’s personal background, cooking experience and culinary passion to create stunning small plates of contemporary British cuisine mixed with inventive international influences. Word soon got around and Skosh garnered a local foodie following, gained much praise from the national press, and continues to have a reputation as one of York’s very best places to eat.
Set inside a beautiful Grade II listed building, the atmosphere and service in Skosh has always matched the food which the restaurant serves; handsome and impressive yes, and in a relaxed and friendly environment which welcomes everybody in to enjoy what matters: good food and good people. The only problem with this cosy spot has been fitting everyone in who wants to experience the excellence - which is why Neil had been looking for ways to expand Skosh’s square footage, a seemingly impossible mission in such a space… until now, when problem solved!
In 2021, the neighbouring Mickelgate premises, formerly Coles Solicitors, became available, and Neil seemingly had his expansion solution. It has, however, taken until 2024 for Skosh to move in to number 96; their planning application took over a year to be approved and pushed back the restoration. Now, in March of this year, after a short closure whilst the work was completed, all has been revealed and the bigger version of Skosh is open.
Skosh v2.0 is very much in keeping with Skosh v1.0. Just like with their original site at number 98, the Grade II listed buildings are thoughtfully restored to create a sympathetic space suited for all. Indeed, the expansion not only puts more bums on seats, it has been designed to allow a more comfortable experience for diners and workers alike.
This means a proper bar area for front of house, a bigger kitchen for the team to grow, and a more spacious and flexible set up for customers, including new toilets, a private dining room and space for walk-ins. Trademarks such as the open kitchen, the relaxed refinement, and of course the fantastic food are all maintained - thankfully, Neil has ensured that everything we all love about his restaurant has evolved and enhanced. Here’s to more Skosh.
A Great Yorkshire Escape: Durham Ox, Crayke
Nestled at the edge of the Howardian Hills, the picturepostcard village of Crayke is surrounded by one of North Yorkshire's most impressive landscapes. Not only that, it's also home to the Durham Ox, an awardwinning pub with rooms that offers an idyllic rural retreat for those looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of nearby York.
This quintessentially English village inn is 300 years old and has been owned by the same family - the Ibbotsons - for the past 25 years. The Durham Ox is named after the famous shorthorn bull, which was born in the late eighteenth century and features in paintings by Thomas Weaver and John Boultbee. Its name also serves as a reminder of Crayke's past, as the village remained a part of Durham until 1844.
The Durham Ox’s menu is shaped by the seasons but whenever you visit you can always choose from a varied range of dishes made using locally-sourced meat, game, fresh fish and seafood. Among the starters are options like sticky belly pork in a soy and sesame dressing, or a plate of smoked salmon, gravadlax and roulade served with dill crème fraiche. Mains include steaks and grills, market fish of the day from Hodgson’s of Hartlepool or ‘comfort classics’, which include vegetarian choices like a mushroom and grilled halloumi burger served with pesto, onion rings and triple cooked chips. Children can tuck into a smaller portion of their choice from the main menu - there are no fish fingers here. Behind the Ox’s bar, you’ll find fine wines, champagnes and local ales, as well as cocktails including a Yorkshire Spritz.
If you’d like to treat yourself to an overnight stay, the inn offers 5* accommodation with eight individually-styled double bedrooms to choose from. Five of these reside in converted stone outbuildings that open onto a leafy outdoor terrace with pergolas. Each room is well-equipped with a TV, hair dryer, individually controlled heating and luxury bath products but they also retain plenty of rustic charm with exposed beams and prettily-patterned textiles. There’s also a converted Studio Suite located above the pub itself, while for the ultimate indulgent getaway there’s the Pool Villa and Pool Cabin, which both come with their very own spa pools. A folding children’s bed can be added to most rooms and dogs are also welcome, although you’ll have to pay a small additional charge for your four-legged friend.
The Durham Ox provides the perfect base from which to explore the surrounding Howardian Hills, perhaps visiting the ruins of the mediaeval monastery of Byland Abbey or taking a walk in Yearsley Woods, where you can spot Buzzards and Goshawks as well as less commonly seen songbirds like the Redstart.
Alternatively, you can head to Helmsley for a day of shopping and sightseeing, or call at the National Trust's Nunnington Hall before passing through quaint villages like Hovingham and Slingsby on your way into Malton, 'Yorkshire's food capital'.
WHAT’S GOING ON
As the world continues to emerge from the shadows of the COVID-19 pandemic, it seems that new technology - particularly AI - is progressing at an unprecedented rate. At the first global AI Safety Summit in Bletchley Park last autumn, world leaders and representatives from major AI companies came together to make a shared declaration committing to more testing for advanced AI models. The University of York now has its very own Institute for Safe Autonomy, where robots and autonomous systems that work on land, underwater and in the air can be safely developed and tested.
Climate change and the cost of living crisis are other current concerns, and both are being considered when decisions are made about the city’s future. When much needed repair work is carried out on the Red House in the Minster’s
precinct it will be fitted with solar roof slates and space for an air source heat pump. 101 eco-friendly homes will soon be built in Fulford and plans are being drawn up for a new two platform station at Haxby, which will bring a rail connection back to the town after nearly 100 years.
On a lighter note, York is welcoming some unusual visitors. From now until the 25th April, 21 adorable ‘Snooks’ designed by local artists will appear around the city. Can you spot them all?
PRINCIPAL HOTEL RENAMED TO HONOUR HERO
The Principal hotel will soon become The Milner York. It’s being renamed to honour heroic York station foreman William Milner, who died while trying to help others during a WW2 air raid. The hotel’s restaurants will also be renamed and it will benefit from a £2 million scheme of improvements funded by its owners, Glasgow-based hospitality company RBH.
STAR CARR: LIFE AFTER THE ICE
Over the last 75 years, archaeologists excavating the Middle Stone Age site at Star Carr in North Yorkshire have unearthed many fascinating artefacts, including jewellery, weapons and more than 22 deer skull headdresses. This spring, some of their discoveries will appear in a new interactive display at the Yorkshire Museum.
Situated near Scarborough, Star Carr was inhabited by hunter gatherers, who lived beside a post glacial lake there for 200-500 years at the end of the last Ice Age.
It was rediscovered in the late 1940s by amateur archaeologist John Moore and excavations carried out by Grahame Clark over the following years revealed such a wealth of finds that it is now recognised as one
of Europe’s most important Mesolithic sites. One of the most interesting discoveries made is its collection of headdresses fashioned from deer skulls. These may have been worn by hunters seeking to catch deer, or used by shamans taking part in rituals. A dig in 2010 also uncovered an 11-foot circular structure that is thought to be the world’s oldest surviving house.
‘Star Carr: Life After the Ice’ opened at the Yorkshire Museum in March. It explores how people lived 11,000 years ago, from cooking and travel to craft and worship. Soundscapes will help you to feel immersed in the past as you come face to face with many of the incredible objects found at the site. Little ones can also learn about history in a new way as they follow the story of Star Carr through the eyes of a friendly dog who once lived there.
UNIVERSITY LAUNCHES
INSTITUTE FOR SAFE AUTONOMY
The safety of autonomous technology is a global concern and the University of York has now launched a first-of-its-kind facility where this can be put to the test. The ISA’s £45 million ‘living lab’ on Campus East houses new experimental laboratories for the study and development of robotics and advanced and quantum communications. House – a modern interpretation of city living, complete with retail and coworking space on the ground floor, and student accommodation in the floors above.
HAXBY STATION PLANS PROGRESS
Designs are being drawn up for a new 2 platform station in Haxby with construction expected to start early next year. The £24 million project will be delivered by Network Rail and will restore the town’s original connection to the York-Scarborough line, which was lost almost 100 years ago.
EBORACUM MUSEUM SCRAPPED
History lovers might have to wait longer to learn about York’s Roman past as plans for a new museum have been scrapped. York Archaeology said the proposed Eboracum attraction would ‘do for Roman York what Jorvik did for the Vikings’ but the idea has been put on hold as the site’s developers have gone into liquidation.
POINTS ARRIVE IN NORTH YORK MOORS
A partnership between BMW and National Parks UK has brought two new electric vehicle charging points to the North York Moors. The ‘Recharge in Nature’ project aims to promote eco-friendly travel and conservation. Six of the new chargers can be found at Sutton Bank and another six will soon be installed at Danby Lodge.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT AFFORDABLE HOMES COMING TO FULFORD
Plans have been submitted for 101 new homes to be built at the council-owned site on Ordnance Lane, Fulford. The homes will all be ‘affordable’ with a range of different tenures available. They will also be built to Passivhaus standards, using renewable energy generated onsite and low-energy heating.
LIGHTWATER VALLEY REOPENS
Lightwater Valley has reopened for the year with some exciting new attractions to discover. The family-friendly theme park, which is less than an hour’s drive from York, has a new space-themed rollercoaster. The regeneration of Acomb
Situated a couple of miles west outside York city centre, Acomb has been a popular residential village of York for many years. With its convenient location and suburban lifestyle, the neighbourhood attracts families and folk looking for an affordable and accessible place to live. In recent years, Acomb has become more than an area to reside in near to the centre, and is a growing community in its own right. Whilst local amenities have always been here, there is now an influx of cafes, shops, bars and businesses leading the change to make Acomb a hotly desired destination.
There has also been an official project behind the regeneration of Acomb, with government funding for the area’s Front Street. The first phase of changes received unfavourable feedback, and the council are keen to ensure future amendments improve Acomb for everybody, consulting locals and attracting visitors. Phase two is now underway for this evolution, with the intention to enhance the area, creating a more people-friendly space and a more accessible destination, whilst considering longer-term aspirations and extending the benefits beyond the high street.
Already in Acomb, longstanding businesses have been joined by excellent new arrivals. Two notable newcomers have elevated the food and drink scene here deliciously…
Bluebird Bakery has established itself as a quality baker of proper bread since starting out over a decade ago. From a York kitchen table, Bluebird now have bakeries in York, Leeds, Malton, Beverley, Holmfirth… and, since 2021, Acomb. In the two years after transforming the old Bathstore shop on Acomb Road, the shop, cafe and event space has integrated into the community and is a local favourite for the friendly service and fantastic food.
Joining the Acomb community last year, a fine freehouse and bottle shop also opened up on York Road. The Hand offer quality drinks with a sustainable focus through a smaller, more direct offering, minimising waste whilst mixing tradition and innovation. Accompanying their wine and beer, the food follows the same ethical ethos, and occasional events by guest chefs add further reason to visit The Hand. Just as the ongoing regeneration to the area promises more reasons to go to Acomb.
Alternative Sunday Lunches
The world of food is full of wonderful traditions and rich cultures. Here in the UK, one of the most loved traditions which continues to bring families and friends together around dinner tables across the country is the Sunday lunch. From roast beef to vegan roasts, the Sunday lunch evolves, and as we grow increasingly familiar with the food cultures of other countries and continents, there are now a variety of worldwide ways to enjoy your Sunday lunch.
We worked our way around York to discover the flavours of India, Brazil, Syria, Portugal and Mexico at five fabulous restaurants sharing their own cultures and traditions. So, if you fancy replacing your Yorkshire pudding with an alternative Sunday lunch, get your families and friends around these dining tables…
Kalpakavadi
In God’s own country of Yorkshire, where better to experience the traditional food of than God’s own country of Kerala? The south Indian state is known by the very same tagline as us, and the two harmonious cultures merge beautifully at Kalpakavadi on Fossgate. Showcasing the food paradise of their homeland, this handsome and welcoming restaurant serves spices and sauces, exotic and expert, of vegetarian delights, meaty magnificence and seafood specialties. A joyous way to spice up your Sunday!

Built on the foundation of support and collaboration, they are dedicated to giving back and making a positive impact on the lives of their neighbours. As a Mexican bar and restaurant, this means a party in your soul and in your mouth; tacos, quesadillas, burritos and more are vibrant, colourful and full of flavour. You’ll be welcomed in to share experiences, belonging, and to enjoy that Sunday spirit.

And the food brings a smile too, with marvellous mezzes and gorgeous grills, to feast on or to share. A joyful experience that is both unique and homely.

Tasca Frango
The craze of piri-piri chicken has become hugely popular all over the UK ever since a well-known food chain spread the spice. The Portuguese dish is a fiery favourite, and now you can get stuck into an authentic Portuguese piripiri chicken in York, at Tasca Frango. Their Colliergate restaurant exudes comfort and joy, and the menu extends too; to Goan curry, spiced hispi cabbage and sharing plates; but if you want to replicate your Sunday roast chicken and potatoes, then it has to be the original piripiri chicken and chips.
