How to play the

Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge The Hollywoodbets Punters’ Challenge is a free to play competition which gives players the chance to win their share of R10 000 if they make it to the top 10 on the leaderboard for every KZN race meeting at Hollywoodbets Greyville and Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourses. There’s more! The Million Mania prize money of over R1 000 000 will be paid to any player who picks all the winners on any race day. Dead-heat rules apply in the event of multiple winning players, that is the total prize will be split equally amongst the winning players. This is an all or nothing prize. There is no pro-rating of this prize in the event of a curtailed or abandoned meeting. To top this, for every race meeting where the cumulative prize is not won, a further R25 000 will be added to the pot.

Visit punters.hollywoodbets.net, use your Hollywoodbets login in credentials and start making your selections. The game is simple, requiring a player to pick one horse for each race on the card, and submitting their picks five minutes before the first race of the day. Players receive points depending on where their selection finishes in a race, and how many actual runners there are in a race. Therefore, in a twelve-horse race, 1st position will receive 12 points, 2nd position 11 points, 3rd position 10 points, all the way down to last position with 1 point. In a seven-horse race, 1st position will receive seven points, 2nd position will receive six points, and so on. Bonus points are awarded for winning selections, where the Holly-

woodbets Starting Price (SP) for that horse will be added to the points awarded. If the winning horse’s SP is 4/1 for example in a race, then an additional five points (4 + 1) will be added to the points earned. In the above twelve-horse race example the winning selection would have 17 points awarded (12 plus 5 bonus points). Ts & Cs apply. On Hollywoodbets Durban July you could win R10 MILLION in the Hollywoodbets Punters Challenge. All you have to do is pick all 12 winners on the card. There is also a must be won prize of R250 000 that will be shared by the top 100 on the leaderboard! Play here now.

Punters’ GUIDE

What is a Win Bet? A win bet is probably one of the easier bets for first time punters to wrap their heads around. You simply pick the horse that you think will win the race, if your selection places first then you’re a winner. It’s all rather simple. How to interpret the odds Before we get into the nitty-gritty of horse racing betting, it’s important that you get to grips with how to read odds. Here at Hollywoodbets, you can read odds on our website as fractional or decimal. Each is explained below within the same scenario. In our scenario, we are going to take DO IT AGAIN (the name of our chosen horse) to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July. In this example, we’ll say that DO IT AGAIN’s odds to win the race are 8/1 (this is the fractional representation of the odds). This simply means that for every R1 you stake on DO IT AGAIN to win the

race, you could potentially win R8 back. So, if you stake R10 on the horse, you will bag R80 if it wins. The other way that these odds can be represented is in decimal form – 8/1 represented in decimal form is simply 8.0. The decimal representation simply shows you how much you’re likely to win for every R1 you stake on your selection. Fixed odds vs Starting price With Hollywoodbets, you can choose whether you want to take a bet on fixed odds or the starting price. The biggest benefit of fixed-odds betting is that you can immediately calculate your potential winnings based on the price of the horse. Starting price means exactly that – you will get the price of the horse at the jump of the race. If you take a starting price win bet on DO IT AGAIN, a week before the Hollywoodbets Durban July when the fixed odds price of the horse is 8/1,

you don’t really know for sure what sort of price you will get at the jump of the race. His price could shorten to 5/1 or drift out to 10/1. You can bag a lot more value out of your bets by combining all of your selections together in one bet. These types of bets are known as multiples or accumulators. Similarly, to how single bets require your selection to win for your bet to be a winner, all of the selections that form part of your multiple must win in order for that particular multiple bet to be a winner. This is a versatile bet type that allows you to add selections from across different markets and sports. For example, you could have a horse to win in the first at Hollywoodbets Greyville, into the Sharks to beat the Bulls, into Liverpool to beat Manchester United – it’s up to you to decide what you’d like to add. Punters’ GUIDE

How to place a Swinger A swinger is a fun little horse racing bet that requires you to select a minimum of two horses in a particular race. At least two of your selections must run in the first three places in order for your bet to be a winner. You can take any number of selections in your swinger, and there are several variations of the bet. What is a swinger bet? A swinger is a bet where you select a minimum of two horses in a particular race. These selections must finish in the first three places, in any order, for your bet to be considered a win. This means that for each race there will be three dividends for each race: first and second, first and third, as well as second and third. You can select more than two horses to form part of your swinger, but remember that the bet will cost you R1 per combination. There are three different variants of

this bet: The Swinger, Boxed Swinger and Banker Swinger. We’ll look at each below: Swinger Simply put, here you need to select two horses to run in the top three positions in any order. For example: if you select numbers 1 and 2, the bet will cost you R1. You will need number 1 and 2 to finish in the first three places of the race for your bet to be a winner. See the table below:

First

Second

1

2

Banker This variation of the bet simply requires you to “bank” one horse to finish inside of the top three along with at least one of the other selections.

For example: if you select number 2 as a banker followed by 3 and 6. This bet will cost R2, if you take the bet for R10 you will have the bet five times. Look at the below table:

First

Second

4

1 2 3

The above table represents a bet containing three combinations (4 and 1, 4 and 2, 4 and 3) – three combinations means that this bet will cost you R3. You will need number 4 to run in the first three, and any one of numbers 1, 2 or 3 to also run in the top three to win the bet. The amount you win will be determined by the pool and the amount that you stake.

Punters’ GUIDE Boxed To take a swinger boxed bet means that you need to select a minimum of two horses to finish in either first, second or third, in any order. If selecting three horses, your bet will cost R9 to take once. For example: 1, 2, 3 boxed. You will need only two of the three to run in the first three for your bet to win. However, if all three run in the first three, you will catch the bet three ways: 1 and 2 1 and 3 2 and 3 In this scenario if you had taken the bet for R10, you would catch the bet 3.33 times for each combination. The amount of money you win is dependent on the pool and the result.

What is an Exacta? An exacta is a bet which requires you to select two horses in the same race to finish in first and second place in the exact order. Straight Line A straight line exacta requires you to take two horses in a race to finish in the exact order. If you take a straight line exacta with the numbers 5 & 6. The bet will read 5/6. The amount that bet will be required to be taken for is R1. Boxed exacta A boxed exacta is where the horses you select, a minimum of two horses, to finish in the first two in any order. The bet costs a minimum of R2. If the result ends in a dead heat, you will be paid out for combinations 5/6 and 6/5. Banker A banker is where you select a horse to finish in one particular position followed by a minimum of one horse to finish in the other position. The example below shows an example of 1 running first followed by numbers 2 and 4. This bet will cost a minimum of R2. Floating banker When taking a floating banker exacta, you are required to select one number to finish in either first or second, followed by a minimum of two horses to accompany it in the remaining exacta position. The example below shows 5 to run first is followed by numbers to 1, 4 and 6. This means that 5 can run either first or second followed by numbers 1, 4, 6.

What is a Trifecta? One of the most popular horse racing bets around, the purpose of the trifecta is to select three horses in a single race to finish in the first three places in the exact order. There are four different types of trifectas that you can take with Hollywoodbets. Straight line In the straight line trifecta, you can only select one horse per finishing position. This remains true for all straight line bets. So, if you take a straight line trifecta with the selections 2, 5 and 8. These selections must finish the race in the first three places in this exact order for your bet to be winning, as the below table highlights. First

Third

If there is a dead heat for first place, there will be two dividends paid out. Should a race finish 2/3 – 5 – 8, the winning combinations will be: First

The same rule will apply if there is a dead heat for second and third place. Boxed Trifecta The boxed trifecta offers you a bit more security than the straight line variant of the bet. Here, you can select three or more horses to run in the first three positions in ANY ORDER. So, if you take a boxed trifecta with the selections 2, 4, 6 and 8, these selections must finish the race in the first three places in any order. First

Punters’ GUIDE Banker Trifecta Bankering a runner usually means that you require the horse to finish in first place. In a trifecta bet, it means that you rely on one horse to finish first, second or third for example. If you take 1 as a banker for first by 2, 4, 6 and 8 for second and third – it would mean that you are relying on number one to finish in first, followed by any of the numbers above finishing second and third. You can also banker a horse to finish in either second or third. This will mean that you would mean to pick horses to run in the other positions. For example, if you take horse number 1 as a banker for second, you would need to choose horses to finish first and third. The more horses that you include will increase your permutation. The table below illustrates a baker trifecta, if you took banker 1 by 2, 4, 6 and 8. First

Floating/Roving Banker Trifecta In a trifecta, you have the option of one or two floating/roving bankers which must run in the top three positions in any order and the other selections must fill the positions that your banker does not. For example, Roving/Floating number 1 by numbers 2, 4, 6 and 8. This implies that horse number 1 must run in the first three with any of the selections finishing in the first three with it. In addition to this, you can have more than one floating bankers. For example, you can “float” number 1 and 10 with horses 2, 4, 6 and 8. This means that you would need numbers 1 and 10 to run anywhere in the top three with 2, 4, 6 or 8 filling one of the other positions. The tables below highlight the aforementioned two bets.

What is a quartet? A quartet requires you to select four horses in a single race to finish in the first four placed in the exact order. Straight line The straight line quartet requires you to select one horse per finishing position. This remains true for all other straight line bets as well. Punters’ GUIDE

What is a Pick 6? Arguably the most exciting of all of the horse racing bets out there due its massive potential pay-outs – especially on big racing days like the Hollywoodbets Durban July – the Pick 6 remains a favourite of South African punters. This wager requires you to pick the winners of six consecutive races at any given meeting. In a Pick 6, you bet into a pool. The pool reaches amounts exceeding R500 000 for every South African meeting at a minimum and can reach amounts exceeding R10 million on feature days such as the Hollywoodbets Durban July or the Met. Because of the difficulty that comes about with picking six straight winners, punters are afforded the opportunity to pick more than one horse in every race – this is called a permutation. A permutation is when you choose a number of horses that could possibly

win in each race for example: Leg 1 – 2, 5, 6 Leg 2 – 1, 3 Leg 3 – 5, 7, 9 Leg 4 – 6, 8, 10 Leg 5 – 7 Leg 6 – 4, 10, 13 Perm = R162 The above permutation is worked out by multiplying the number of horses in the various legs by each other. In this scenario, the sum was calculated as follows: 3 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 1 x 3, which worked out to R162. The bet can either be taken multiple times or as a percentage. We’ll explain these two concepts a bit further below:

You can also take the bet for more than the full bet amount. For example, if you struck the bet for R324, it would mean that you catch the bet 2 times. This means that you would win the dividend multiplied by two, so in this case: R50 000.

Multiple Times If the bet mentioned above was taken for R162 you would catch the bet 1 time. That means that if the dividend was R25 000, then you would win R25 000.

Rules Once learning how to take the Pick 6, you have to take note that the Pick 6 consists of a few rules other than your horse having to cross the line first.

Percentage If you take the bet for R16.20 it would mean you would receive 10% of the dividend should you win. In this case, 10% of the dividend would equate to R2 500. This bet is known as the best value for money bet throughout punting circles as you have the opportunity to win big money for a small stake.

Punters’ GUIDE First timer rule If a first-time runner wins one of the legs of your bet, the first previously raced runner would count in all winning tickets. For example, if you had number 1 (a previously raced runner) and it finishes second to number 2 (a first-time runner), you would still qualify for the next leg as both numbers 1 and 2 will be regarded as winning tickets in the Pick 6. Scratchings If the horse that you have in your Pick 6 gets scratched, your selection will be replaced by the eventual tote favourite as declared by the TabGold website. Pick 6 Carryover In the event that the Pick 6 is not won by one full ticket holder, the pool then carries over to the biggest event of that particular week, which normally is the weekend’s race meeting. For example, if the Pick 6 pool for Wednesday’s meeting is R500 000 and only 10% of

the pool is won (R50 000), it means that R450 000 will be carried over to the next big meeting chosen by Tab. Maximum Payout Hollywoodbets Open Bet When taking the Pick 6 with Hollywoodbets the maximum potential pay-out is R15 million. Max refers to the maximum amount you could win when taking the bet with Hollywoodbets. Tote Bet When switching over to the tote with the button provided on the Hollywoodbets website and mobisite, you now can take a bet where the pay-out is limited to the rules stipulated by the TabGold website. Difference between Open Bet and Tote Bet An Open Bet is a tote/TAB type bet taken with a bookmaker. The bookmaker – in this case, Hollywoodbets

– lays the bet, and pays the dividend that was declared by the tote on the winning combinations. No fixed odds are agreed at the time the bet is placed. The winnings, and therefore the pay-out, is determined after the outcome of the event on which the open bet was struck becomes known, with reference to the dividends generated by the totalisator. Tote betting works by a player betting into a cumulative pool that also includes other punters. The pay-out is then shared among all of the winning players – this is referred to as a dividend. Remember that the total amount that gets paid out is determined by the number of people who won the pot. Likely pool on Hollywoodbets Durban July day = R12 million. Punters’ GUIDE

What is a place Accumulator? A place accumulator is a bet that runs over seven races and requires the horse/horses that you have selected to finish in the first three in each race for your bet to be successful. What races do place accumulators start from? The first race of a place accumulator can be determined by the number of races on the card. If there are nine races, the place accumulator will begin in Race 3 and if there are eight races, the place accumulator will begin in Race 2. There are two types of place accumulators that you can take – the straight line or the permutation. We will take a look at these below: Straight Line The easiest way to select a place accumulator is to take a straight line.

This involves taking one horse to finish in the first three positions in each race. If any of the selections do not finish in the first three places, your bet will lose. Leg 1 – 1 Leg 2 – 2 Leg 3 – 6 Leg 4 – 6 Leg 5 – 1 Leg 6 – 8 Leg 7 – 4 The above bet costs R1 – a minimum of R1. Permutation As we discussed a bit earlier, you can pick more than one horse if you want to in your place accumulator. This is called a permutation (when you select more than one horse that could potentially finish in the top three in each race).

By selecting more horses in each race, you must remember that it will cost you more to take the bet for a chance to win the full dividend. Let’s have a look at the below place accumulator permutation: Leg 1 – 2, 5, 6 Leg 2 – 1, 3 Leg 3 – 5, 7, 9 Leg 4 – 6, 8, 10 Leg 5 – 7 Leg 6 – 4, 10, 13 Leg 7 – 2, 3 Perm = R324 The above permutation is worked out by multiplying the number of horses in the various legs by each other. In this scenario, the equation was calculated as follows: 3 x 2 x 3 x 3 x 1 x 3 x 2 – which worked out to R324. The bet can either be taken multiple times or as a percentage.

IMAGE: Candiese Lenferna

Multiple Times If the bet mentioned above was taken for R324, you would catch the bet one time. That means that if the dividend was R2 500, then you would win R2 500 if your bet was a winner. You can also take the bet for more than the full bet amount. For example, if you struck the bet for R648, it would mean that you catch the bet two times. This means that you would win the dividend multiplied by two, so in this case: R5 000. Percentage If you take the bet for R32.40, it would mean you would receive 10% of the dividend should you win. In this case, 10% of the dividend would equate to R250. This bet is known as the professional punters bet as you are required to take horses to finish in the places for each race Betting Rules As you may have guessed, there are some other rules that you need to be aware of before taking your first place accumulator. Multiplier rule If you take a permutation and more than two horses run into the first three, your permutation will multiply. For example, if your permutation accumulates to R324, you took 50% of your

perm for R162 and two of your horses run into the money in any particular leg, your percentage will double. This multiplier continues to grow if more than one of your horses continues to arrive in the various legs. You may start with a 50% perm and could end up catching it multiple times. Scratchings If the horse that you have in your place accumulator gets scratched, your selection will be replaced by the eventual tote favourite as declared by the TabGold website. Carry over In the event that the place accumulator is not won by one full ticket holder, the pool then carries over to the biggest event of that particular week which normally is the weekend’s race meeting. For example, if the place accumulator pool for Wednesday’s meeting is R500 000 and only 10% of the pool is won (R50 000), it means that R450 000 will be carried over to the next big meeting chosen by Tab. Hollywoodbets maximum payout When taking a place accumulator, the maximum winnings in respect thereof will be limited to the net pool of the tote. Tote bet When switching over to the tote with the button provided on the

Hollywoodbets website and mobisite, you now can take a bet where the payout is limited to the rules stipulated by the TabGold website. Difference between Open bet and Tote bet An Open bet is a tote/TAB type bet taken with a bookmaker. The bookmaker – in this case, Hollywoodbets – lays the bet and pays the dividend as declared by the tote on the winning combinations. No fixed odds are agreed at the time the bet is placed. The winnings, and therefore the payout, is determined after the outcome of the event on which the open bet was struck becomes known with reference to the dividends generated by the totalizator. Tote betting works by a player betting into a cumulative pool that also includes other punters. The payout is then shared among all of the winning players and this is referred to as a dividend. Remember that the total amount that gets paid out is determined by the number of people who won the pot. Armed with all of this knowledge, you now know how to take a place accumulator with Hollywoodbets! Likely pool on Hollywoodbets Durban July day = R1.7 million.

How to place a Multiple Bet How to place a Multiple Bet You can bag a lot more value out of your bets by combining all your selections together in one bet. These types of bets are known as multiples or accumulators. Similarly to how single bets require your selection to win for your bet to be a winner, all of the selections that form part of your multiple must win in order for that particular multiple bet to be a winner. This is a versatile bet type that allows you to add selections from across different markets and sports. For example, you could have a horse to win in the first at Hollywoodbets Greyville, into the Sharks to beat the Bulls into Liverpool to beat Manchester United – it’s up to you to decide what you’d like to add. First things first, take a look at the video below before we get started: https://blog.hollywoodbets.net/how-

to-take-a-horse-racing-multiple/ What is a multiple? A multiple is a bet that consists of two or more horses in a particular bet. The more horses you add, the more you stand to win. Keep in mind that the more horses you add, the smaller your chances of winning. How to interpret odds? Before explaining how to take a multiple bet, it helps to understand how odds are multiplied. In the example below, let’s say you have selected horse number 2 in Race 1 (DO IT AGAIN) and horse number 4 in race 2 (RAINBOW BRIDGE). If DO IT AGAIN is 3/1 and RAINBOW BRIDGE is 2/1, you work it out as follows. Take the price of each horse and add 1. Then, multiply those numbers by

one another and subtract 1 from the final amount. 3/1 + 1 = 4 2/1 +1 = 3 4 x 3 = 12 – 1 = 11 The price of the double will be 11/1. When taking a multiple, you can add any amount of combinations you want. Scratchings Once you have an understanding of how multiple prices are worked out, equating your new price in the event of a scratching becomes quite easy. When one of your horses is scratched in a multiple that consists of two horses, your bet now becomes a single. If you have a multiple that consists of more than two horses and one of your horses is scratched, your price will be readjusted to the horses that remain in the bet.

Fixed odds vs Starting price With Hollywoodbets, you can choose whether you want to take a bet on fixed odds or the starting price. The biggest benefit of fixed-odds betting is that you can immediately calculate your potential winnings based on the price of the horse. If you take a multiple and the price accumulates to 20/1 on fixed odds that price is set in stone. Any price changes on any horse will not affect your odds. Starting price means exactly that –

you will get the price of the horse at the jump of the race. So, if you take a starting price win bet on DO IT AGAIN a week before the Hollywoodbets Durban July when the fixed odds price of the horse is 8/1, you don’t really know for sure what sort of price you’ll get at the jump of the race. His price could shorten to 5/1 or drift out to 10/1. When taking a starting price multiple, it could either benefit you or disadvantage you as no one knows how the market will react.

Mixing your multiples The great thing about multiples is that you can mix and match as you see fit! You can, for example, take RAINBOW BRIDGE to win at 5/1, the Sharks to clear the (-5.5) handicap against the Bulls at 9/10 and Liverpool to beat Manchester United at 1/1. In the above example, we’ve taken a horse, a rugby team to clear a handicap as well as a soccer team. You can mix it up however you see fit, though.
