Editor’s note ROBIN Williams said: “Spring is nature’s way of saying, ‘Let’s party!’” By simply stepping out your front door you can tell that Mother Nature is already in party mode. Flowers are in full bloom bringing us bursts of vibrant colour. The early birds are up even earlier and way more chirpy. Waking up to daylight is a welcome change and being able to sip on those sundowners a little bit longer is bliss. Last year spring didn’t bring the same kind of renewed energy we always look forward to. While Mother Nature went about her annual transformations, a grey cloud hung over us as the world remained imprisoned by the pandemic. Even though Covid-19 is still a real threat, there’s now a sense of hope in the air as more and more people are being vaccinated, allowing us to relax a bit. This sense of relief and renewed energy has burst onto the fashion scene. Bold colours have dominated the runways at this season’s fashion weeks. The colour palette for spring is a true reflection of what we all need. From in-your-face neons to vibrant orange, you’ll have no choice but to splash buckets up colour over a dull wardrobe. A sure sign that we are slowly coming out of the darkness. While dressing for comfort remains at the forefront with matching sets still trending, we see more flamboyant designs coming back into style. Over-the-top puff sleeves and uber-feminine styles will have us floating into summer. With many people still working from home, dressing for work is no longer a thing. But zoom meetings are, bringing everything above the keyboard into focus. So while you might be in sleep mode below the waist, everything above it needs some vooma. Even beauty has taken a bold turn. Since we’re still masked up every day, eyes remain the focus when it comes to make-up looks. The bolder the colour the better. Even ears are getting special treatment this season. If you haven’t started packing those bulky jackets and chunky boots away yet, now’s the time to do so. It’s time to make room for spring and all its glorious splendour.

COLOUR TRENDS
GERRY CUPIDO EXCITED to inject pops of colour back into our wardrobe, here are Spring/Summer’s trendiest colours that will brighten up our looks this season. WATERCOLOURS Washed out pale hues will gently transition your wardrobe from winter into summer. Think mint greens, baby pink, powder blue and lilacs. These tones lend themselves to feminine looks we’ll see trending this summer. SHADES OF BLUE A cloudless summer sky is what inspires cool blue tones. Shades of blue bring a sense of calm in this turbulent time. While solids are safe, bold graphic prints and stripes and monotone florals offer a playful alternative. Bright blue is a soothing alternative to other bright colours like reds or pinks. ORANGE Orange is a colour not many can pull off, but it IS a colour that will make you stand out from the crowd. It’s bold. It’s bright. It’s extravagant. Wearing this vibrant colour head to toe is showstoppingly brave. Love the colour but not enough to be awash in it. It’s the perfect pop of colour to play off subdued earth tones like olivey greens or stone greys. HIGHLIGHTER BRIGHTS If you’re nostalgic for those crazy days of what some might consider cringe-worthy 90s fashion, then the highlighter brights, which is pretty much the same as neon colours, is making an eye-blinding come-back. These super bright colours are strictly accent colours and not be worn from head to toe. With the change in season comes a change in style.
SPRING FASHION TRENDS
AS WE move into Spring, we are enjoying longer daylight time, and temperatures are slowly starting to climb, we eagerly start to pack our bulky and often drab toned winter wear far away to make room for our beloved breezy outfits. With the change in season comes a change in style. Here are a few of this season’s hottest trends.
UBER FEMININE Ultra-feminine styles are back with full-volume maxi-skirts and romantic ruffles. The look is overthe-top and by no means demure. Grand puffed sleeved tops is a quick way to get this look.
MATCHING SETS While this trend gained popularity along with the lockdown, stay-home, lounge wear trend, it has spilt over to casual day wear and evening wear. Matching sets generally means wearing a top and bottom in the same print or colour.
THE CHEQUERBOARD If you’ve seen the exquisitely directed series, The Queens Gambit, you’ll understand why the chequerboard trend is a major comeback. Moving away from the 90’s skate culture roots, (think classic Vans skater shoes) the print gets a punchy makeover this season to liven up youth’s wardrobe. This time it’s all about playful twists and pastel tones.
THE “ABOVE THE KEYBOARD” TREND With more people working from home, online meetings, virtual seminars and conferences have become the norm. This has brought into focus what people are wearing above the waist. Here we seeing more detail on the neckline, over-thetop sleeves and quirky t-shirts.
Pearls are back GERRY CUPIDO PEARLS are back and trendier than ever. Now they are popping up on our social media feeds from Instagram to TikTok. Fashionistas are digging into their granny’s jewellery boxes and scavenging second-hand stores for these aquatic gems. Since Harry Styles rocked a simple pearl choker at the Met Gala in 2019, it’s become an acceptable part of men’s fashion as we see more and more men wearing them. The pearl choker has become a signature accessory along with his gender-fluid style. Justine Bieber seems to always be wearing pearl and colourful bead necklaces these days. On almost all his Instagram posts you’ll see him wearing them. Singer Rihanna recently stepped out in black lingerie slip dressed draped in layers of pearl necklaces, one being a classic three-strand Vivienne Westwood pearl necklace. Whether it’s the classic choker or the longer opera pearl necklace, fake or real, these ocean treasure have seen a major makeover which see you well into summer. One of the
trendiest play on pearls right now is to combine them with colourful beads. This trendy combo can be seen all over social media. From moms to teens, guys to girls, people are finding fun ways to create their own funky combinations, with many adding lettered beads, usually spelling out their own or loved one's names, to their strings in between the colour beads of different shapes and sizes. For those who find these funky necklaces to be too out there for them, bracelets and even phone accessories are getting the pearl and beads treatment. It’s safe to say that they will be the hottest swimwear accessory on the beaches this summer. Whether you invest in real deals, borrow them from your mother, get lucky at a thrift store or simply get the fake ones at just about any fast fashion store, it’s the one accessory you won’t go wrong with.
As a belt Thread a light cotton or silk scarf through the belt loops of jeans, a skirt or shorts for a fresh summer twist.
SACHA VAN NIEKERK IF YOU haven’t noticed, scarves are this summer’s hottest accessory. From cheeky handkerchief-style tops to sweeping up locks with knotted headwraps, these playful pieces of fabric are versatile to the point of fulfilling all your fashion needs. There are so many ways of incorporating scarves into your everyday look so don’t opt for wrapping one around your neck and calling it a day. This season in fashion, it’s all about taking things to the next level. In silk, cotton, modal or fleece, they look flattering in floral, chinoiserie, chevron, and more because, when it comes to scarves, absolutely anything goes. Although they’ll take you from winter through to spring and summer, we think that this accessory is best served with a side of sunshine.
Scarfs
On your wrist Scarves with vibrant, punchy prints in a fruity candy colour palette make for beautiful jewellery alternatives. On your handbag Everyone has that everyday handbag that they carry with them everywhere. Spruce things up a little by winding a scarf around the handle of your bag, weaving it through chunky metal links or simply tying it into a bow. In your hair Our favourite take on the trend is to wear one in your hair. Wrap a scarf around your head, weave it through plaits or tie it around your ponytail so it flows down your back.
As a top Scarves are more than just an accessory. When strategically folded and tied just the right way, they make for flirty, floaty tops that pair perfectly with denim, skirts or even under dungarees. Around your neck A trend revived from the 90s, chokers are chic, sophisticated and look even better when combined with the scarf trend. Fold a handkerchief scarf into one skinny line with pointed ends tie around your neck and voila, you have yourself a new choker.
On your ankles This one may seem a little out of the ordinary but the final look is so cool, and perfect for the season. Reminiscent of how ballerinas tie their pointe shoes, this trend pairs well with just about any shoe.
NOSIPHO NYIDE ONE of the world’s biggest jewellery brands has relaunched its Gen Z centred collection, giving it an all-new attitude. Pandora is rebooting their Pandora ME collection, which celebrates young people for their ability to freely express themselves, defy expectations, be bold and wear things their way. The brand also aims to encourage creators to express themselves through the collection, which is entirely customisable courtesy of interchangeable styling connectors and links. “The new Pandora ME designs have been created to reflect their wearer’s identity and bring our brand DNA and heritage into the future. We were inspired by the idea of connecting with a tribe of people driven by the power of imagination and creativity – a community that connects deeply with the Pandora world,” explained Pandora’s VP Creative Directors, Francesco Terzo and Filippo Ficarelli. “We see the collection’s endless possibilities of personalisation as a catalyst for self-discovery - it’s all about identity, self-expression and telling your personal story,” they said. For the iconic relaunch, Pandora joined forces with famous artists Addison Rae, Charli XCX, Donté Colley, Beabadoobee and Cecilia Cantarano, to further promote the importance of individuality and self-expression. The dancer and TikTok star, Addison Rae was excited to be part of the relaunch and shared her thoughts alongside a video on Instagram. “Y’all, I’m so happy to finally announce that I’m a part of the Pandora ME collective along with @charli_xcx @ ceciliacantarano @donte.colley and @ radvxz !! We are all connected by our creativity and love of music, which is exactly what this Pandora ME campaign is all about. Pandora ME collection targets GenZ Rae’s jewellery pieces showcase her transformative and DIY style, reflecting her power to defy conventions. A master of reinvention through sound and style, Charli XCX’s look is as eclectic as it is exciting. Cecilia Cantarano’s freestyling approach, with layered rings and a music note mini dangle charm, represents her love of dance and music and living to the beat of her own tune. Donté’s look shows off his ‘more is always more’ styling mantra – reflecting his unstoppable force of optimism and joy through dance. Personalisation is at the heart of the collection, with multiple styling accents that will allow customers to amplify their own unique style. The range is also not just trendy but entirely customisable courtesy of interchangeable styling connectors and styling links. And if that is not exciting enough, as a nod to this generations fearlessness and ability to speak their minds, the styling links featured in the collection have words like “freedom”,
“dream” and “believe”, emblazoned on them. Pandora ME also caters to those who don’t just care about what jewellery looks like but also what it means, so medallion lovers will find some pieces that tap into the idea of harnessing their inner power. The collection wouldn’t scream Gen Z’s without some emojis, so the new mini dangles – include flames, a smiley face and banana emoji. Carla Liuni, the chief marketing officer said: “We know the highly creative and powerful Gen Zs express who they are through music and fashion, so we have combined these loves to inspire our fans to share their voice as individuals but also stand together as an empowering community in and around the world.” Pandora jewellery is sold in more than 100 countries on six continents through more than 7,000 points of sale, including around 2,700 concept stores so it will not be hard to get your hands on the Pandora ME collection. SPRING MAKE-UP GERRY CUPIDO I KNOW I’m not the only South African who’s had enough of winter. As much as we’ve enjoyed the novelty of playing in the snow, most of us are ready to kick off our winter boots and pack away our thick coats to make space for our frilly summer frocks and barely-there bikinis. Warmer weather and relaxing of Covid-19 restrictions means more people will be getting out and enjoying the sunshine and being more
social. This means that we can finally dress up a bit and put some effort into our looks. Once again get creative and have some fun with hair and make-up. As we slowly get ready for summer and dream about the outfits you’ll be rocking, here are a few summer hair and make-up looks we spotted on the runways at this year’s New York Fashion Week (NYFW) shows to draw inspiration from.
At the Proenza Schouler show makeup artist Diane Kendal took colour to the next level by painting the entire eyelid with bright blue, orange, or pink tones with skin dewy and flawless. At the Prabal Gurung show, make-up artist Sil Bruinsma, popped neon shades of electric blue, neon pink, and golden on the inner and outer corners of their lids.
At the Collina Strada show make-up artist Alice Smith created fairy-like looks which extended to the ear. While our mouths still remain covered by masks it makes sense that ears will get some attention.
Ear make-up
Bright eyes Colour eyebrows
Glitter eyeliner
We all love a bit of glitter so this trend is enough to make any disco queen happy. At the Laquan Smith show, it was the glamorous glitter cat eye that had us spellbound. The dramatic shimmery eye make-up was created by make-up artists Sheika Daley and Jasmin Winnie Stephen.
If the Threeasfour show is anything to go by, pops of colour is a sure trend. While the models’ faces were kept bare, neutral, their brows popped with colour. The eyebrows were dyed in shades to compliment the bright avant garde outfits which ranged from blues to oranges.
SPRING CLEAN YOUR SKIN VIWE NDONGENI-NTLEBI
SPRING is here! A change in seasons is great, but it can affect your skin. According to dermatologists, adverse changes in your skin can more than likely be attributed to the transition of seasons. While there's nothing you can do about seasonal shifts, that doesn't mean your skin has to suffer the consequences. When you nourish your body with the proper protection, food and nutrients, your body will thank you with youthful and radiant skin Laura Chacon-Garbato, Herbalife Nutrition director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training, and licensed esthetician shares how diet can help you get healthy skin.
IMPORTANCE OF ANTIOXIDANTS AND PHYTONUTRIENTS While protein is essential to achieving healthy skin, antioxidants and phytonutrients are also crucial to skin and overall health. Some plant substances accumulate in the skin and enhance the antioxidant defence mechanism of the skin cells. Make sure your diet includes fruits like blueberries, strawberries and apples, and vegetables like broccoli, spinach, tomatoes and kale.
INCREASING YOUR PROTEIN Proteins are essential for tissue repair and the construction of new tissue. Cells need protein to maintain themselves, and the body uses protein to “replace” worn-out or dead skin cells. Protein can be added to your diet from sources like chicken, meat, fish, soy or tofu. Meal replacement shakes are also a great way to elevate protein consumption.
USE DAILY SPF Basking in the sun is one of the most enjoyable times in the summer, and the last thing you want is to end up with a nasty sunburn at the end of the day. Try using broadspectrum sunscreens with an SPF value of 15 or higher to protect your skin during ordinary exposure. If you stay out in the sun all day, you should consider stronger protection. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside, to allow enough time to provide the maximum benefit to your skin. You can also choose light athletic clothing with built-in UVA/UVB protection for added protection. Some lightweight material absorbs sweat and will allow your skin to breathe while enjoying the outdoors.
WATER CONSUMPTION Strenuous activities during the hotter months can lead to substantial water and electrolyte loss. It is essential to keep the body hydrated. Don’t leave home without a cooler full of hydrating drinks and foods. Plain water is good and adding a flavour or fresh fruit to cold water will infuse the flavour, and it might encourage you to drink more often. COLLAGEN CONSUMPTION The human body’s collagen accounts for 25-30% of its total protein, of which about 75% is skin collagen. Collagen is located primarily in the connective tissue and is responsible for giving the dermis its firm structure. During the ageing process, the skin suffers from a progressive loss of moisture and becomes increasingly dry.
MOOD – BOOSTING beauty tricks
GERRY CUPIDO EVEN though spring is on our doorstep, winter’s still making its presence known and between the icey weather and the doom and gloom of life in a pandemic, even the most naturally cheerful person can do with a mood booster. Of course we would love to treat ourselves to a day at a luxury spa. For some, simply a day off from our busy schedules can be near impossible. Whether you’re the mom desperately trying to juggle working from home, home-schooling and the rest of the challenges that come with motherhood, a student burning the midnight oil or a business woman chasing deadlines, time is precious. Because we’re spending more time at home now, there’s no real need to glam up these days. Most days we can’t even be bothered to get out of our sleepwear, never mind applying a full face of make-up! But just because we don’t have to do any of those things, it doesn’t mean that your beauty products have to collect dust. There are ways to use your products to sprinkle just a little bit of sunshine over a gloomy day and won’t take up too much time either. Here are a few beauty tips and tricks to lift your mood.
PERFUME Yes perfume is a beauty product. Whether it’s an expensive designer perfume or one you fell in love with at the toiletries aisle, a scent transports you to a happy place. A choice of perfume is a very personal thing. It evokes memories and creates new ones. You might have a perfume in your collection that makes you feel like a goddess or one that gives you a sense of calm. BLUSH Just a little blush can go a long way. Blush is that one cosmetic product that will instantly give your face a healthy appearance. That look you have when you’ve had a great workout, whether it be on the treadmill or between the sheets. The look you have when you feel heat rushing to your cheeks when someone makes you blush. Stay away from cakey powder formulas though. Creamy blushes or tints work best. You won’t even need a make-up brush. That in itself is a win. If you don’t have blush, any pink, peach or red lipstick will do. Simple dap on some colour and blend well using your fingers. BOLD LIPSTICK We all know the magical power of a classic red lipstick. Simply applying red lipstick brings joy. Watching your lips transform as your swipe colour over them is truly satisfying. That moment you step back from the mirror and see the transformation, makes any woman smile. Bold lipstick doesn’t always have to be red either. Orange, coral, fuschia, purple, and neon reds are all fun colours to explore if you’re looking to step outside your comfort zone.
GERRY CUPIDO WHAT you wear is a reflection of who you are, a visual expression of your personality, but the perfume you wear is an invisible yet everlasting expression of who you are. As Christian Dior once said: “Long after one has forgotten what a woman wore, the memory of her perfume lingers.” One can go as far as to say that people judge you by your scent. So often you would hear someone say that they simply don’t like a person or are not attracted to a person because of how they smell. According to Dr Alan R Hirsch, the founder of the Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Foundation, perfume choices are influenced by personality. He concluded this after administering personality tests to 18 631 people and comparing the results to the participants’ aroma and flavour preferences. He breaks down what the different types of perfumes say about a person. ZESTY CITRUS: According to the doctor, those attracted to citrus scents tend to be strong-minded, ambitious, natural leaders and they may be viewed as dominant and aggressive. ROSE NOTES: “These people are introspective
and sensitive to the needs of others. They tend to weigh all options before making a choice,” Dr Hirsch says. Lovers of the romantic blossom are naturally cautious and don’t make hasty decisions. NOT SO BLAND VANILLA: “You’re probably thinking that people who like vanilla are bland, ‘blah,’ and have a vanilla personality, but we found just the opposite! People who like vanilla are lively, energetic, the life of the party—they’re anything but vanilla,” reveals Dr. Hirsch. TOOTY FRUITY: Irritable, cranky, and pessimistic, is how he would describe people who gravitate towards more fruity fragrances. FRESH CRISP LINEN: “Linen fans are actionoriented. They enjoy physical and mental challenges,” says Dr. Hirsch. “They tend to be self-confident, intuitive, goal-oriented, and always in control.” THE SCENT OF GARDENIA: “Gardenia lovers are steady and dependable. They enjoy safe, secure relationships. They’re followers more than leaders. They’re team players and people pleasers.” FOR THE LOVE OF JASMINE: “They crave novelty, and enjoy new and exciting adventures. They’re provocative and can be thought of as partiers who enjoy a good time” says the doctor.
