BEAR - COFFEE, KITCHEN & BAR
#notanothercoffeeshop BEAR, is set to transform Derby’s cafe-bar scene.
From building society, to bank, to BEAR - this charming site on Derby’s Iron Gate has stood empty and forgotten for 9 long years... until now. Founded in 2014 by entrepreneurs Craig Bunting and Michael Thorley, BEAR first found bricks and mortar at the site of a once iconic retail store at the top of Uttoxeter High Street, opening to the public for the first time in January 2016. As a result of the success with their flagship store, BEAR have now expanded to Derby, opening a second store slap-bang in the centre of the iconic and beautiful Cathedral Quarter, which is due to open early December. More than a coffee shop and a refreshing alternative to the traditional pub or bar, BEAR is at the forefront of the global ‘third wave’ coffee movement that sees coffee as an artisan foodstuff, rather than a bland commodity. The company currently sits amongst the leaders of a developing trend to combine the finest coffee along with the best in brunch and lunch style dining during the day, and then slide effortlessly into cocktails, craft beers, wines and informal dining during the evening. In short, BEAR is a coffee shop, kitchen and bar, providing a new, all day dining experience with an ethos of perfection that stems from their passion for great coffee; a passion that is evident in everything they do.

SITTING ON FRIAR GATE, WHERE IT HAS BEEN SINCE 1734, THE GREYHOUND HAS BEEN ONE OF DERBY’S BEST LOVED PUBS SINCE IT WAS GIVEN A MODERN MAKEOVER AND REOPENED IN 2009. Part of Derby Brewing Company’s family of pubs, it has stayed ahead of the competition by continually evolving to offer something new. Having recently installed a new pizza oven, we thought we’d go and treat ourselves to a slice (or five!) Visiting on a rather windy autumnal afternoon, The Greyhound’s cosy bar and dining area offered the perfect escape from the blustery weather. Sat towards the back of the pub, we could see plenty of space to sit outside too - great for when things get a bit warmer again. Before ordering our food we headed over to the bar to get drinks and were met with friendly staff who were happy to help throughout our time in the pub.
6 | IN Derby | Christmas 17
THE GREYHOUND
The Greyhound offers an impressively extensive selection of beer including imported craft beers and more traditional real ales along with the usual choice of lagers.
Whilst it was a very ‘meaty’ choice, there’s a huge selection of pizzas to choose from including a healthy amount of vegetarian options, including a delicious sounding Lasagne pizza.
Given that I was in a Derby Brewing Company pub, it seemed only right that I had a pint of one its most popular beers, Business As Usual. When in Rome, and all that.
My dining partner took a little more time to choose her order, contemplating whether to go for something from the ‘smokehouse’ menu which offered a number of dishes including ribs, beef brisket and lamb. She finally decided to go for the 21-Day Aged Steak.
There’s also the chance to order a ‘perfect partner’ with your food. A board by the bar recommends which beer will best complement your main course. Not being a beer lover, my dining partner opted for a glass of red wine. We sat down and awaited our food, which thankfully given our hunger, was with us within less than 20 minutes. I’d decided to skip a starter and I was glad of that choice once my pizza had arrived. I’d ordered the ‘Pit Master’ and it certainly did not disappoint in size, with six large slices piled with a selection of pulled pork, bacon, chicken and chorizo, finished with a topping of cheese and a helping of rocket leaves. Cooked in The Greyhound’s new wood-fired oven, it tasted deliciously fresh and was a real treat for someone who quite frankly, flipping well loves pizza.
Whilst a similar dish can be found in most pubs, The Greyhound makes sure its offering stands apart by serving a succulent 8oz piece of rump accompanied by delightfully fluffy, and filling, hand cut chunky chips. The steak also came with sautéed mushrooms, onions and tomatoes along with drizzling of garlic butter. To finish things off we shared some ice cream from local dairy Bluebells. There’s plenty of flavours to choose from - don’t ask me which is my favourite, it’d be far too hard to choose. Having filled our stomachs and warmed ourselves up it was time to face the cold and windy weather outside once more and head home. It’s safe to say, it won’t be long before we’re back, blown in by the wind or not!

WINTER SKIN CARE WITH THE ICY HARSH WEATHER UPON US, WE NEED TO PROTECT AND LOOK AFTER OUR SKIN MORE THAN EVER. The cold air and wind is every skins’ worst nightmare, as it drys it out, even if you have oily skin. And don’t think that only a moisturiser will protect your skin! Think about it, we layer up with clothes in the winter months so you need to do the same with your skin care.
CLEANSE This is the first and last thing everyone should do, to remove the daily grime from pollution, makeup etc. I recommend BIODERMA Hydrabio H20 Micellar Water. It removes everything including waterproof makeup without leaving your skin feeling dry or tight! It’ll leave your skin hydrated and plump. For a more intense deep cleanse, I recommend a Hot Cloth Cleanser and Liz Earle do ones for both men and women.

SERUMS
LOVE YOU LIPS!
There is so many out there for different types of skin, depending what you’re wanting to achieve from it, for example, you might want a more plump feeling, or to reduce the appearance of your pores.
It still shocks me how many people DO NOT use or even own a lip balm! CRAZY! Think about it, you eat, talk, smile and lick your lips – they go through a lot!
I recommend Vichy Idealia Life Serum – It’s perfect for all skin types, it hydrates and gives you a radiant complexion.
For me it’s the first and last thing I put on and even throughout the day, if I don’t wear a lipstick. Lips need moisture! You can get ones that leave a tint like Carmex Strawberry Lip Balm Tube with a bonus of SPF15. Or if you’re a guy, you can opt for Nivea Original Care Lip Balm, that’s clear.
Gentlemen – you need to use a serum too! My hubby uses No7 Men Protect and Perfect Intense Advanced Serum and his skin feels hydrated, fresher and smoother.
Alongside moisturising your lips don’t forget to exfoliate them, as the cold weather can make them very chapped and you need to remove the dead skin.
MOISTURISER To finish off the layering of course you need to moisturise. Regardless what skin type you are you’ll need something that’s hydrating without that greasy feel and have SPF! Yes you still need SPF all year round! I recommend La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo+ SPF 30. This also has the bonus of helping with any blemishes without drying out your skin. With the change of weather and shaving or wearing heavier makeup, your skin is more prone to having a breakout!
I recommend Lush’s Lip Scrubs, they come in some amazing flavours and contain jojoba oil and caster sugar, so you won’t be left with a horrible taste in your mouth, but will be left with super smooth lips. Drinking plenty of water goes without saying, you’ve got to support your skin from the inside too! Here’s to a lovely winter, complete with beautiful skin!

THE PALFREY NAMED DERBY’S BEST BAR JUST A FEW WEEKS AFTER BEING CROWNED DERBY’S BEST BAR, THE PALFREY HAS BEEN DEVASTATED BY FIRE. BUT OWNERS AMIE AND SHARON REMAIN POSITIVE ABOUT THE FUTURE. Sponsored by IN Magazine, ‘Bar of the Year’, was one of eight awards handed out at the ninth annual Marketing Derby Food and Drink Awards at The Roundhouse on 9th October. The awards had generated over 5,000 votes across its categories that celebrated the best pubs, bars, restaurants and cafés across this city. The Palfrey, a contemporary restaurant and wine bar located in the Old Blacksmiths Yard in Derby city centre, beat off competition from The Orange Tree and Suds & Soda to take home the ‘Best Bar’ prize. Judges from IN magazine had the difficult choice of picking between the three shortlisted bars. Each establishment was ranked on its attention to customer service, atmosphere and its drink selection. Whilst Suds & Soda on Friar Gate and The Orange Tree on George Street both impressed our judges a great deal, it was The Palfrey that they felt was deserving of the prize.
16 | IN Derby | Christmas 17
But devastation struck in the early hours of Sunday 29th October when a huge blaze ripped through the premises. Owners, Mother-Daughter duo, Sharon and Amie Marlow told IN Magazine: “Words cannot really describe how devastated we both are feeling. Eighteen months ago we started on our journey of transforming The Palfrey into a contemporary and cosy bar & restaurant. We recently celebrated our first birthday and had just achieved recognition as the Best Bar in Derby and were looking forward to a busy and successful Christmas. The fact that this was all taken away by something so trivial as an unattended Halloween tea light, makes it even harder to comprehend.
DERBY FOOD & DRINK AWARD WINNERS CELEBRATE
By James Hopka
“It had been our dream for many years and we were finally living that dream, so we are now left heartbroken that this has occurred. However, we are remaining positive and although it’s going to be a long road ahead, we believe in The Palfrey’s future and hopefully we can get the business up and running again as soon as possible. “We would also like to thank everyone, including customers & local businesses, for their kind words and support. It has been truly overwhelming and has provided hope during this difficult time.”
AWARDS RECOGNISE CITY’S BEST FOOD AND DRINK

TERROIR BISTRO IN FRIAR GATE HAS BEEN NAMED AS DERBY’S TOP RESTAURANT AT AN EVENT CELEBRATING THE CITY’S BEST PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK OUT. Accolades were also presented to Bustler Market (Best Newcomer), The Saracens Head, Shirley (Best Out of Town) and Derby Cathedral Café (Best Customer Service) whilst Liv and Sarah Pritchard from Bean Caffe were recognised with an Outstanding Achievement Award, sponsored by Royal Crown Derby.
John Forkin, Managing Director of Marketing Derby, commented: “The judges had a difficult, albeit enjoyable, time picking winners. “We asked them to take a rounded view, looking for excellence in customer service, with knowledgeable staff who seem to care, appropriate ambience, as well as, of course, the excellent food and drink offer.”
Organised by Marketing Derby, in conjunction with the Derby Telegraph and Cactus Images, the awards were supported by a range of sponsors including Derby College, Riverlights Derby, The Irongate Group, IN Magazine, Burnthebook and the University of Derby.
Whilst Terroir scooped the prestigious Restaurant of the Year Award, sponsored by Denby Pottery, other category winners included Katherine’s Gift and Coffee Bar (Best Café), Masala (Best International), The Palfre (Best Bar) and The Silk Mill Ale and Cider House (Best Pub).

MORE STYLE AT THISISIN.CO.UK
WHAT TO WEAR THIS WINTER I’M THAT BASIC BLOGGER WHO LOVES EVERY THING ABOUT THE AUTUMN . MY WARDROBE COMES ALIVE, I’M OUT MORE IN THOSE CRUNCHY LEAVES AND I THINK I SINGLE HANDEDLY KEEP THE PUMPKIN SPICE MARKET ALIVE DURING OCTOBER. I GOT YOUR BACK STARBUCKS.
To me, it screams sophisticated city slicker or trendy AF mum. It’s a style snip at £34.99 at New Look, make sure you hop in and try it on though as the sizing is a bit awry – I know a friend who is a size 12 that picked it up in a size 8! Pair it with an on trend checked scarf from Accessorize, £20 and a crochet bobble hat from Matalan, £6.
This style and colour is timeless, it comes back year on year and still makes the catwalks like D&G, Fendi, and Versace. At £70 currently in the sale, it’s a snip and will last you beyond this year. As you have a nice big fluffy colour, skip the scarf and head straight for some gloves to rock it with.
For my plus size babes out there, look no further than this super chic camel wrap coat with a fur trim from Very.
Nothing gives me more delight than going coat and scarf shopping when the cooler weather sets in. I scour the online shops for the perfect throw over to carry me through the rest of the year.
I love these leather gloves from M&S £17.50, opt for a funky colour to make it pop!
With so much on the high street, there’s so much to chose from – so I thought I’d show you the two perfect coats from a size 8 to a size 28! Mustard is a key colour this season, it’s come back for 2017 with a vengeance after being paraded on the Bottega and Loewe catwalks at Fashion Week. 18 | IN Derby | Christmas 17
Pair them with an on trend checked scarf from Accessorize, £20 and a crochet bobble hat from Matalan, £6. I hope you have a fantastic Winter season! Send me your photos of your #OOTD on Instagram!

FIRST IMPRESSIONS REALLY DO COUNT!
By S onia Soh al
IN MEETING SOMEONE FOR THE FIRST TIME, IT COULD BE YOUR NEW BOSS, A NEW CLIENT OR EVEN A FIRST DATE. THE MOMENT THAT PERSON MEETS YOU HIS OR HER BRAIN TAKES JUST 7 SECONDS, YES I SAID 7 SECONDS TO FORM AN IMPRESSION ON YOU, SHOULD THEY HIRE YOU OR BUY SOMETHING FROM YOU? First impressions are more heavily influenced by non-verbal cues than verbal cues. In fact, studies have found that non-verbal cues have over four times the impact on the impression you make than anything you say. As a stylist I understand the importance of looking the part. The way we look and feel in our clothes, should be a positive refection of who we are and how we want to be perceived by others. If you feel confident in what you wear your behaviour will reflect that confidence. While you can’t stop people from making snap decisions, you can most defiantly learn a few tips on how to make those decisions work in your favour. Here are a few tips on how you can make that perfect first impression:
KEEP YOUR PERSONAL IMAGE UP TO DATE WITH WHERE YOU ARE IN YOUR LIFE AND YOUR CAREER It is important that your image is an authentic representation of who you are and what your about. Many people get caught up in their work and home life that and forget to pay attention to themselves. As you progress through life make sure you allow your image to do so as well. Allow your personal image to evolve, even if that means clearing out your old clothes and investing in the new!
DRESS FOR THE JOB YOU WANT NOT THE JOB YOU HAVE Always stay ahead of your competition even if it means ‘dressing to impress’ project an image you feel confident in and that your proud of! It not only enhances your confidence; people will also start to notice this positive change in you. We have all heard of that phase ‘Looking the part’ its important that in today’s generation you are aware that sometimes making that extra effort to look your best, could put you in front of your competition.
Your image should be polished, refined try not to worry about keeping up with the latest trends, add a few new pieces to give your style a boost.
BE AUTHENTIC! As time goes on more and more people are consumed by social media and wanting to look a certain way, but is that who you really are? Authenticity is powerful, people are more drawn too you when they can see authenticity and personality in the way you look. Be genuine align your character and personality with your style. Many people who struggle with their personal image are unaware of how to dress to their full potential, you may be too busy, or you just don’t know where to start…. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!! Send me an email if you have any questions, looking and feeling like the best version of yourself should be the only way! If you are curious about what could be possible when you show up as the best version of yourself? Send me an email, I would love to help.

MAGICAL NORTHERN LIGHTS WITH WINTER DRAWING IN, THE HEATING IS BEING TURNED UP AND WE ARE REACHING FOR THAT SCARF IN THE BACK OF THE WARDROBE. It’s not all shivers and gloom though, we at Just Journey think it’s time to focus on the amazing places that are best visited during this winter season. Skiing is of course the obvious choice, but that aside and as we
specialise in the more unusual holiday, we would like to set our focus on the wonder that is the Aurora Borealis, aka. The Northern Lights. There are a good selection of countries breaching the Arctic Circle that boast remarkable viewing positions for this natural wonder, but you must remember they are as elusive as they are spectacular. The usual destinations cover, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Canada and they all offer wonderous packages. These can include Ice Hotels, visits to Santa’s Lapland with festive winter villages, sleeping in glass igloos and enjoying the whole nights sky from your own bed.
By Leo Ford (Just Journey)
There are cruises that focus on this beauty, spa breaks with saunas and fresh ice pools. But if we could really peak your interest with a destination rarely visited, we have some great itineraries to Russia or even the hardly visited Greenland, where its vast and unspoilt landscape will offer some of the greatest chances for capturing that wonderous sighting of the famous Northern lights. Interested in experiencing the Northern Lights yourself or have other travel plans, you can call into Just Journey at 53 Bridgford Road or call 0115 7500 500 and speak to our travel specialists. FESTIVE FITNESS IT’S GET TING TO THAT FESTIVE TIME OF YEAR WHERE WE FEEL THE NEED TO LOSE A FEW POUNDS TO FIT INTO THAT PARTY DRESS, AND PRET TY MUCH EVERY MAGAZINE ON THE HIGH STREET WILL ADVERTISE HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT AND LOOK GOOD AT CHRISTMAS PARTIES. I’m a newly qualified personal trainer and it drives me mad when I see all the ‘fad diets’. I have struggled with my weight all my teenage and early adult years. At my biggest I was 20 stone, until one day decided to change this road I was on. I have now lost 10 stone!
n a l Tr ainer )
I don’t believe in cutting foods you love out of your life, as food is a huge part of our happiness and this is no quick fix. We need to find something that we can stick to for life, as it’s all about moderation and portion control.
When it comes to weight loss it’s about eating in a deficit, but that number is different for all of us. So many people pluck a number from thin air or copy their friends plan and then they wonder why it doesn’t work for them.
We can have a slice of cake, just not the whole cake. Remember, some foods feed the body and some foods feed the soul. The last thing you want is to miss out on social occasions, because of your ‘diet’ that attitude just won’t last in the long run.
My biggest advice this festive period is enjoy your social occasions and make healthy choices in between.
I’m often asked what type of exercise someone should do and my answer is simple ‘What do you enjoy doing?’ Exercise isn’t punishment, it should be something you look forward to.
I can tell you first hand, nothing works better than eating a healthy wholesome diet and exercising a few times a week.
WE CAN HAVE A SLICE OF CAKE , JUST NOT THE WHOLE CAKE, REMEMBER SOME FOODS FEED THE BODY AND SOME FOODS FEED THE SOUL!
When it comes to weight loss, we automatically start to think of what we need to cut out of our diet. However, I think it’s about adding things in, eating more veggies. Fruit helps a lot and eating more whole foods rather than processed foods.
Don’t get me wrong, even I have days where I feel less motivated and that’s normal, but if you ever find yourself hating your workout you need to change it. If I’m writing a training plan for someone, I will always make sure it suits their needs in health and happiness.
If we add more nutrients in, we naturally have less room for the less nutrient - dense foods.
We must remember we are all individual, so what worked for me won’t always work for you.
Don’t crash diet for 8 weeks, then go off plan for 3 weeks, to end up back at square one. You’ll then want to jump on the fad New Year diets. My motto is eat good, move more and feel great. It’s also a busy time of year and we often find ourselves going a million miles an hour trying to fit so much in our schedules. So you have to make sure you give yourself some ‘me time’, even if it’s just 10 minutes a day or 1 hour a week, where you can sit and just take some time to clear your mind, after all, health comes as a package in mind and body. Make sure you get good sleep and rest when your body tells you to, as we often neglect these things more than our diet, yet they are the crucial foundations to living a healthy happy life.

COSY CHRISTMAS
DECORATING YOUR HOME FOR CHRISTMAS HAS TO BE MY MOST FAVOURITE THING EVER! IT GETS EVERYONE IN THE FESTIVE MOOD AND MAKES EVERY THING IN YOUR HOME LOOK EXTRA SPECIAL! Every year I have to buy at least a few new decorations, whether it’s for the tree or around the house, it’s my very own little tradition. There are so many themes out there, but the ‘Cosy Christmas’ stands out in particular this year.
22 | IN Derby | Christmas 17
It’s all about soft throws and cushions, complete with rustic elements paired with classic pieces and candles for a homely, relaxing feel. With the days getting shorter and weather getting colder, all I want to do when I get home for work is get my pyjamas on and cosy up on the sofa. These faux fur throws and cushions from NEXT (main picture above) are so soft – I just want to wrap myself up in these permanently! I have a love for Stars, so in my home there has to be star decorations, especially at Christmas.
This LED Wooden Star from Darlighting.co.uk (bottom left) would look great in any room of the house. With the soft lighting and rustic wood, it gives that cosy feeling effect. These metallic stars from Red Lilly on notonthehighstreet.com (bottom middle) are also lovely as they have holographic star lights behind festive wording, reindeer and snowflake patterns that create a soft glow. For a more rustic feel this Starry Birch Wreath from coxandcox.co.uk (bottom right) would look amazing on any door or wall. With Frosted muted glitter, its festive yet understated.
Now everyone usually has a green tree whether it’s real or fake. Why not have something a bit different? This St. Petersburg Blue Christmas Tree from John Lewis is just stunning (bottom right). It’s on the pricier side of £250 but it’s 7ft and a great investment for many Christmases to come! Even if you don’t have a fireplace in your home, everyone still has a stocking! These grey Knitted Alphabet Stockings from Matalan are so cute! (bottom left) You could have just your initial or be more creative. For only £8 each, these are a bargain.
Of all places in your home, you need a cosy bedroom! As soon as November arrives, my brushed cotton bedding is out!
Winter from The White Company is a very popular scented candle, with notes of sweet cinnamon and clove with a dash of orange.
This Nordic brushed cotton bedding from lifestylish.com (above) is adorable. With the grey and red it’s the perfect Christmas bedding.
If you fancy splashing out, Jo Malone London Incense & Embers Candle is just beautiful.
No festive decoration is complete without a few scented candles! Yankee Candle do a wide selection of scented candles, these three are my favourites for this winter; Crackling Wood Fire, Spiced White Cocoa and Festive Cocktail!
So I hope this gives you some ideas for your home this winter! Here’s to a lovely, happy and cosy Christmas!
