Bar Soba are an award-winning Bar & Kitchen concept, who specialise in creative, indulgent cocktails, Street Food inspired by the bustling night markets of South East Asia and cutting-edge music from local DJ talent. Remixes are on the Menu at Soba with their cocktails, street food and soundtrack all featuring Soba ‘twists’ on signature drinks, street food dishes and music. Their drinks list was curated to put the fun back into drinking cocktails, using premium ingredients, exotic flavours and a bit of theatre! The Osaka Sour pays homage to the disco era of cocktail making – a bright green twist on the Midori Sour topped with a lemon-meringue foam. Drinkers will find cheeky alcoholic twists on childhood favourites in their Drumstick Caipirovska and fans of the Porn Star Martini – brace yourselves for the 1.5litre Porn ‘Jar’ version which will be on offer. They will offer premium products at promo prices with midweek drinks promotions. Classic Street Food dishes have been given a contemporary Soba Remix such as the popular Chicken Katsu Curry which is prepared with crispy Buttermilk fried chicken rather than the traditional Panko crumb. If you love Spring Rolls, you’ll be keen to try their Cheeseburger Spring Rolls which are handmade and filled with spicy Szechuan ground beef, gherkins and gooey cheddar. They will also offer an Express Lunch to meet the needs of the businesses in the area, as well as midweek savings for Derby Students.

DID THE YARD PASS OUR BREAKFAST TEST? WHEN WE WERE INVITED TO TRY OUT A BREAKFAST AT THE YARD, WE WERE IMMEDIATELY INTRIGUED. COULD PRIDE PARK STADIUM’S HIT ALL THE RIGHT NOTES FOR BREAKFAST? The Yard, located in the South West Corner of the Rams’ home and opposite the Derby Arena, opened in August and caters for all occasions, whether it be a business meeting or a social gathering. The restaurant is already developing a great reputation in Derby – though we must admit we hadn’t considered visiting for breakfast, until now. Combining fresh food, great service, seriously good coffee and an extensive drinks menu, the restaurant celebrates the local area’s natural larder and features many of its favourite dishes. Thankfully, we’d find out that those elements aren’t just confined to lunch and evening food and drink. Arriving promptly ahead of The Yard’s 8am opening, our group quickly converged in the (ample) car park outside The Yard’s inviting exterior. We’d chosen a particularly cold day to meet, so we were very thankful that the walk from the car to the restaurant was so short. Once inside, we were greeted by a bubbly set of staff (who seemed considerably more awake than any of us) all ready and waiting to get us seated. Having got settled on a lovely table adjacent to the 6 | IN Derby | January 18
bar, our group of five dived straight into an analysis of the menu. As with The Yard’s other menu offerings, we were glad to find a good selection of dishes were also available for breakfast, covering a variety of tastes. Out of the group, two of us enjoyed The Yard’s hearty traditional breakfast, another the poached eggs and smashed avocado, and the remaining two tucked into some rather enticing buttermilk pancakes. As our meals arrived, it was clear that The Yard does actually care about responsible sourcing and careful preparation. We were all taken aback by how immaculately our food was presented, which immediately got things off to a good start! Very unsurprisingly, the moment the dishes landed on the table, our pleasant conversation immediately came to a crashing halt. It was time to eat. So, what did we make to such good-looking food? Well, I’m happy to report that we unanimously
felt like the food tasted as good as it looked. The traditional breakfast was both satisfying and unfussy, whilst the poached eggs and pancakes appeared to paint smiles across the faces of my fellow guests. Big thumbs up!
It’s worth saying that all of this culinary pleasantness was also aided by some legitimately great service. The Yard’s staff have been well trained, and they certainly make you feel well and truly at home. This is a place I’d actively want to have breakfast. It’s relaxed, open and warm enough for one to welcome in the day. So, whilst The Yard might not be the first place you’d have thought to grab breakfast – it should be shooting right up to the top of your list. We can’t recommend it highly enough. Make your booking at The Yard by visiting theyardderby.co.uk where you can reserve a table via the online booking system or alternatively by calling 01332 821001.

NEW YEAR, SAME ME THE NEW YEAR BRINGS WITH IT MANY WONDERFUL THINGS; JANUARY SALES, FROSTY MORNINGS AND A CHANCE FOR A NEW CHALLENGE OR START. That being said, I think it’s very easy to fall into the trap of wanting to change every little thing about yourself and your body. Making big declarations and then feeling rubbish when you inevitably fail to meet the impossible targets you’ve set yourself within a small time frame, instead of making tweaks to your life. That’s why this year I’m setting myself the goal to practice more self care. Now, this isn’t about to develop into a sex column (not today, anyway) – self care is the art of taking the time to give yourself a bit of a break or something you need in order to keep your mind, body and inner self, at the right balance to go about life. That could be anything from giving yourself a facial, making a hearty vegetable soup or hitting the gym for a work out. It even means if you want to treat yourself to those shoes because you worked hard over Christmas, then you do that!

RADIANT NEW SKIN AND RELAX…THE FESTIVE SEASON IS FINALLY OVER AND WE CAN ALL GET BACK TO OUR NORMAL ROUTINES! AS MUCH AS I LOVE THE FESTIVE SEASON, IT’S VERY CHAOTIC, WITH CHRISTMAS SHOPPING, PARTIES AND JUGGLING WORK AND FAMILY LIFE – IT’S SUPER STRESSFUL AND TIRING AND THAT ULTIMATELY WILL SHOW THROUGH YOUR SKIN. BALANCE With stress and tiredness, your skin will go crazy, so you need to try and get it back under control and balance it out. Serums are usually key to this, I recommend YourGoodSkin Balancing Skin Concentrate. It works with your skin to restore and maintain your skin’s natural balance, with ingredients like Green Tea, Vitamin C & E and Japanese Lily Turf. It claims that you’ll have visibly healthier skin in 28 days and I can confirm this is the case! I’m already on my 2nd bottle!
OILS Our skin produces oil naturally, with some of us producing more than others. It’s important that you put oil back into your skin, as it keeps the skin 8 | IN Derby | January 18
smooth and moist. Which is better than dry and flaky! I recommend Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, which has recently become a holy grail product of mine. It’s a facial oil that visibly restores the appearance of your skin by the morning. You’ll wake up with super soft skin, looking radiant and fresh! Having oily skin myself, I’ve always avoided facial oils, but it’s reduced my oil production to a normal level.
FACE MASKS Anytime is a good time for a face mask, especially in January. There are so many on the market that claim to do a variety of things -it’s crazy! Clay and Sheet masks are my favourite. For a clay mask, my go to is Sand & Sky’s Brilliant Skin Pink Clay Mask! It detoxifies, brightens, tightens pores and boosts your natural radiance! For a sheet mask, my favourite is Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask. It’s so easy to use and super hydrating. In just 15 minutes your skin will feel really hydrated, plump and radiant.
COLOUR CORRECTING A result of being tired and stressed is dark circles and pigmentation, yet some of us also naturally suffer with these. I’m one of these people and I find no matter how much concealer I wear, it still shows through! A lot of brands now have colour correcting products and I find Urban Decay do the best ones. My favourite one is Peach for my dark circles, I use this between my primer and foundation and as if my magic, I look like I’ve had a week’s worth of sleep!
GLOW To give you that extra bit of glow and radiance after applying your makeup, go with a blush that has a sheen through it. I recommend NARS Blush in Orgasm! It’s a lovely peachy-pink shade, which will give you that pop of colour but still look natural. It’s important to make time and pamper for yourself all year round, but make sure you really do this month. You’ll then be set for the rest of the year. Happy New Year to you all and here’s to looking radiant!

MAINFRAME PRESENTS… 3 GREAT BENEFITS OF COMMUNITY THROUGHOUT HISTORY YOU’LL FIND THE BEST AND BRIGHTEST ALWAYS SURROUNDED THEMSELVES WITH A COMMUNITY OF FRIENDS, PIERS AND LIKE-MINDED FOLK WHO HELP DRIVE THEM TO BECOME EXCEPTIONAL. From artists to scientists to engineers and everything in-between. It’s no different today. If you’re looking to reach your full potential, you need to embrace the fact that we all need support, and surround yourself with a community. No matter how talented you may be, you’re not going to get very far without learning to leverage the power of community.
people you talk to. You never know you might find a partner for a new collaboration or hear about the perfect next job. It’s so true when people say, “it’s not what you know but who you know that counts…”. In addition, as the working world become more flexible and we start to see greater volumes of part-time and home-working, communities can offer much needed face-to-face people time.
KNOWLEDGE One of the most exciting reasons for joining a community is the opportunity to learn from one another. Whether you’re looking to improve specific skills that could help you in your day to day role, or a mentor to guide you and give you the benefit of their experience; communities provide a place for people to meet, share and grow.
Here are three key reasons for making that next community meet up:
In today’s rapidly changing and busy world, keeping up with professional development can feel like a challenge. Communities can offer a manageable way to keep learning.
CONNECTIONS
INSPIRATION
Joining any community means you have the chance to improve your professional and personal connections. Meeting influencers and getting to know others in your field, can raise your profile and potentially open doors for both you and the
Communities are a perfect place to challenge yourself to think creatively about your own business, work or ideas. Being surrounded by a diversity of opinions and approaches can be refreshing and inspiring.
Often simply looking at our challenges from another perspective or hearing stories from those who have “been there and done that” can lead us to the solutions we’ve been looking for. “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” —African proverb

Brexit. Trump. No more Mary Berry on the Great British Bake Off. Things are looking bleak, so wouldn’t it be better to just forget all about it?

Martyn Joseph is a performer like no other. He’s a jaw dropping guitar player who has developed a unique percussive style, teamed up with a powerful show stopping voice, and has been called “The Welsh Springsteen”. There are also shades of John Mayer, Bruce Cockburn and Dave Matthews – but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.
Comic maestro Stephen K Amos might not be able to provide bread to the hungry masses, but no-one else is going to put on a better circus. Leave your problems behind for the evening in the company of the ‘effusively charming’ Amos and who knows, maybe the world will seem just a little bit brighter. After all, when Ancient Rome needed to distract itself from politics, a few solutions were suggested, but none hit the spot quite like the simple idea of giving the people cheap food and plentiful entertainment – ‘panem et circenses’ or ‘bread and circuses’. Modern politics is a confusing mess, so no one can blame you for giving it a miss in favour of a night of laughs.

Petra the Pink Pixie and Griswald the Green Goblin narrate the magical story of Rapunzel.
In a brand-new adaptation of L Frank Baum’s ‘The Wizard of Oz’, the Oddsocks troupe invite you to meet Dorothy as you’ve never seen her before.
Exhibition On Screen is thrilled to present one of the most talked-about exhibitions of the year. Dedicated to the portrait work of Paul Cézanne, the exhibition opens in Paris before travelling to London and Washington. One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington, and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least-known of all the impressionists – until now.
Witch Gothel claimed Rapunzel as a baby, in exchange for her parents taking salad from her garden. The witch kept Rapunzel in a doorless tower for many years before eventually vanquishing her to a far-off land for deceiving her. Prince Tarquin was blinded and left to wander the desert. Dame Delilah Doddle is Rapunzel’s grandmother, determined to find her long-lost granddaughter and the Prince. This pantomime is a little bit different and full of exciting characters to entrance the audience. Like all good fairytales they all lived happily ever after!
Will the Scarecrow find a brain? The Lion some courage? The Tin Man a heart? The Audience some ice cream? The “irresistibly anarchic” Oddsocks Productions are bringing another classic adventure to life with a hearty dollop of their trademark comedy: new songs, familiar faces and laughs aplenty! Join the Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man as they travel through the weird and wonderful land of Oz, encountering Wet Witches, Flying Monkeys, Poisonous Poppies and a multitude of Munchkins along the way! What could possibly go wrong?
SWINGING AT THE COTTON CLUB Friday 26th January 2018 Derby Theatre derbytheatre.co.uk Featuring The Lindy Hop Dance Company and The Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra Take a step back into 1920s & ’30s New York City and through the doors of Harlem’s hottest nightclub, ‘The Cotton Club’! Swinging at The Cotton Club is the actionpacked show celebrating the music and dance of the Cotton Club – New York’s most celebrated nightclub of the 1920s and ‘30s. Performances by Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Fats Waller would have had the club swinging whilst dancers such as Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers lit up the stage with their breathtaking routines. In this show, the exhilarating dance and music of the Cotton Club is recreated by the fabulous Lindy Hop Dance Company, alongside The Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra, featuring American vocalist Marlene Hill and compere/ vocalist Megs Etherington.
PRIVATE LIVES Tuesday 30thJanuary – Saturday 3rd February 2018 Derby Theatre derbytheatre.co.uk London Classic Theatre present a major new touring production of Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy. Strong passions and even stronger personalities set the stage for a classic battle of the sexes. 1930. Deauville, France. Two newly-married couples occupy adjoining honeymoon suites in the same hotel. As a distant orchestra plays, Sibyl gazes adoringly at charismatic husband Elyot, while Victor admires his new wife, the vivacious and sophisticated Amanda. Champagne flows and the sea shimmers in the moonlight as the newlyweds prepare for the evening ahead. But when Amanda overhears a familiar voice singing a forgotten song, an old spark reignites, with spectacular consequences.

function room perfect for meetings and/or special occasions. The function room comes with a private bar and sits around 30-35 people. The newest member to occupy a unit is Derby’s favourite, The Palfrey. Back in October last year, after just winning Best Bar at the Derby food and drink awards, it was a shocking sight to see the burnt out remains of one of Derby’s most popular restaurants, after a single tea light sparked a blaze which ripped through the premises in the dead of night. For The Palfrey, however, 2017 ended with festive cheer as it has risen phoenix-like and reappeared at The Post House. The Palfrey is serving up a typically tempting and eclectic menu.
Post House owner Jade was only too aware of the misfortune that had befallen The Palfrey’s coowners Sharon Marlow and daughter Amie – the restaurant is directly behind her Design@44 store on Sadler Gate. “I could see from the back garden how bad it was,” says Jade, “and I just felt so sorry for the owners after all the effort they had put into the refurbishment. It was absolutely awful.” Jade said about The Palfrey joining The Post House, “It’s fantastic, we already have a great mix of outlets they are just the right business to take it on and will add to the already great choice of outlets we have inside this lovely building.”
Certainly, The Palfrey fits the bill. It was known for offering a wide range of much sought after dishes and will no doubt be seeking to tempt its former regulars back with more of the same, while its longterm home is restored to its former glory. “Everyone at The Post House wishes them the very best,” says Jade. “As independent traders, it’s hard to imagine what they have been through, especially after they had invested so much of themselves in the business. “We’re really pleased that we can help them carry on and once again serve the great food they had become so well known for.”
Overall, The Post House offers a welcoming atmosphere accompanied with great customer service, friendly faces and ensures you will have a fantastic experience from start to finish. Make sure you go and check it out, eat some great food and enjoy a refreshing drink, inside this great place. For more information and/or if you are interested in occupying a unit to showcase your business and joining this exciting business, head to the website and get in touch with Jade and Antony theposthousederby.co.uk.

STYLE RESOLUTIONS STYLE RESOLUTIONS, WE ALL HAVE THEM, MAKE THIS THE YEAR TO LOOK AND FEEL YOUR BEST! WE HAVE ALL HEARD OF THE CLICHÉ NEW YEAR NEW START, BUT HOW MANY OF US COMMIT TO THE CHANGES WE WANT TO SEE IN THE NEW YEAR? Many want to see improvements in their personal image and overall appearance, yet we do nothing about it, you may find yourself countlessly wondering into shops picking up similar items you already own, to just have 5 of the same thing, because its ‘comfortable’. Change can only happen when you sit down and analyse exactly what you want out of your personal image, ask yourself these questions?
WHO AND WHAT ARE YOU DRESSING FOR? When you narrow down exactly what you are dressing for, it will help you see your wardrobe in a different light, ask yourself does your current wardrobe reflect you in a positive way? If answered no, then why? Is it the shape of the item, the colour or the fit? Either way if you know it does nothing for you, it should go. 18 | IN Derby | January 18
YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF YOUR PERSONAL IMAGE You may feel you aren’t in the best shape right now to change your style, or it could be because you find new trends daunting. Ask yourself when will the right time be? Do you want to waste your time waiting to be the perfect size? You will miss out on important moments wishing you looked better, wishing you made a little more effort, there is never a right now, than now. Make a decision that changeis only possible when you are less self critical, and are willing to try ‘new’ things in order to create a ‘new’ and improved you.
DOES YOUR CURRENT PERSONAL STYLE MAKE YOU FEEL CONFIDENT? Having the look good and feel good connection, is the most powerful way to succeed in every aspect of life, feeling good on the outside has the power to reflect positively on the inside, and not feeling good in any way is a cause of self neglect. Putting effort into your personal appearance more often than not can lift your spirits. When you put less effort into your image the mirror can seem like your worse enemy, and it may lead you to withdrawing from social situations.
By S onia Soha l All because you are afraid of change or unsure of seeking help, ask yourself do you really want out miss out on life changing events because of self neglect? When you put effort into your image you may start to receive compliments, and you feel confident in yourself to achieve higher. This effort encourages you to continue to be the best version of yourself, reflecting positively on self belief. This is the key to looking good on the inside and out. Caring about how you present your physical self to the world, makes you more present in your body. Caring for yourself also allows you to feel empowered and have self control, it reminds you that you can control how you feel about yourself and that’s powerful! Moving forward don’t neglect your personal style, it doesn’t matter what shape or height you are, there is always something amazing out there waiting to flatter your natural shape and personality. Use your natural beauty and personal style to reflect a positive personal image to the world.

WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF GET TING STUCK IN A RUT WHEN IT COMES TO OUR STYLE. THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT STICKING WITHIN YOUR COMFORT ZONE THAT’S SO APPEALING, BUT DO WE NEED TO BE SO SAFE? It’s something that I’ve been discussing on my blog recently, and ultimately a topic I’ve become passionate about.
I know many people feel like how I did and there’s a lot of pressure on women to look good, but I think we should all wear what we want to wear, despite how scary that concept is in the beginning. If you make fashion mistakes, you’ll learn from it. Don’t let that stop you from experimenting with your clothing, no matter how big or small. Whether it’s a bold new colour you’re nervous to try, a style of hat you wouldn’t usually wear or that beautiful floral dress you’ve never worn just sitting at the back of your wardrobe.

EXPERIMENTING WITH STYLE THIS JANUARY Remember, they’re only clothes and you wear them, they don’t wear you.
Over time you’ll discover new ways of dressing that you love and that feel-good feeling will shine right through! Why not make it your mission for this year? A new years resolution perhaps?

Typically I’m a jeans, jumper and an ankle boot kind of girl. That’s my style and that’s who I am. Or so I thought, until one day something clicked. Why can’t I wear these clothes that look so wonderful on everyone else? Why should the colour red not be worn by a redhead like me? Do we need to be so limiting and hard on ourselves? Should we push our fashion boundaries more? It’s still a work in progress, and will continue to be throughout 2018, but I’ve already started wearing dresses and skirts more, and dare I say it, even the colour red! It’s still me, but a more carefree and expressive version. The confidence is something I’ve had to fake, but within time it grows and I’m happier for it. January 18 | IN Derby | 19

HEALTHY NEW YEAR NOBODY NEEDS A NEW YEAR TO START A FRESH OR TO SET SOME GOALS, BUT LET’S FACE IT, THE SECOND THAT CLOCK STRIKES MIDNIGHT, MOST PEOPLE WILL HAVE MADE THEIRS, SO WE MAY AS WELL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS TIME OF YEAR AND SET SOME OURSELVES. Our motivation is at its highest in the New Year, we will have had time to reflect on the past year and decide it’s time to change things. I can almost guarantee that most people will have a fitness / weight loss goal in mind and that’s absolutely great. There is nothing more important than our health. The problem is so many people will jump straight in the deep end and by March they will have given up - so here’s my top tips to reaching your fitness goals.
CREATE HEALTHY HABITS
MEAL PREP
Create healthy habits that are maintainable for you! Don’t worry about what everyone else is doing, this is your journey.
Finally my advice to you is to prep your meals, as this is key to staying on track and it can also save you lots of money as you won’t be buying excess food.
Don’t follow fad diets create something you can stick with. Remember you’re getting fit for life, not just a few weeks! You could buy some weights and exercise equipment for your home or start the gym or maybe take up running. Just go for it!
TRY SOMETHING NEW
Even if you don’t have time to make them in advance, try writing your meals down at the beginning of the week and stick to that plan. Most importantly, remember it takes at least 28 days to form a habit, so don’t expect results over night.
Starting new things can feel really intimidating, but that’s only because your pushing out of your comfort zone, which means you’re growing.
Make life style changes and not just new year’s resolutions, be kind to yourself and have fun, you should be on this journey because you love your body not because you hate it.
You’re also likely to find new friends with the same interests as you which will really help keep you motivated, remember even the people who are experts were once beginners.
We all have rubbish days, what’s important is that you don’t unpack and live there, a few bad days won’t ruin all your hard work, just draw a line under it and keep on going!
If you don’t know what you’re doing, seek advice especially in the gym, that’s what the trainers are there for.
DECIDE WHAT IT IS YOU WANT AND WRITE IT DOWN I actually write my goals down every Sunday, that way I’m constantly reminding myself of what I’mworking towards. Split your goals down to short, medium and long term that way you can see what you’re working towards now as well as the bigger picture.

HOW TO AVOID THE WINTER BLUES
WHEN THE TREE HAS BEEN RECYCLED AND THE DECORATIONS ARE BACK IN THE LOFT, IT CAN LEAVE YOUR HOUSE FEELING A LIT TLE BARE AND DRAB. But do not despair! Help is at hand and you don’t need to spend a fortune or have a complete overhaul to make your home feel special again. I find introducing lamps, are a clever way of bringing interest back into a room, especially in the winter months when the nights are longer, and we switch on earlier. Soft, warm lighting feels cosy and welcoming. These quirky, colourful lamps by Dar Lighting available from wayfair.com for £58.99 each, are just an example of fun additions to any scheme and can complement or contrast your colour palette. A feature wall is a really quick way of putting back appeal when you want to add some personality.

I have always been a huge fan of wallpaper as it can transform a space completely.
You could even mix and match papers and get really creative.
Great for colour, pattern or texture you can be as bold or subtle as you wish – whatever suits you and your home.
Two casadeco.fr/en/ wallpapers from the French company’s Ambassade Collection.
If you prefer to adorn your feature wall with paint, Little Greene have an offering of 191 paint colours on their most recent colour chart which is available free of charge at littlegreene.com - definitely something to please everyone! If you are looking to fill the space that the tree and the presents occupied, an accent chair is a lovely focal point. Be daring and brave and go for a show stopper like this traditional chair (page 26) which has been gilded and then upholstered in a very contemporary fabric to create the ultimate wow factor. Of course, whatever the season or the weather outside, there’s one rule that always applies - layer it up! Fabrics, patterns, colours – mix it up a little. This ‘Pretty in Pink’ selection chosen by Emily Todhunter are all available from oka.com (below).
Remember to look after all your senses too. When all the lovely scents of Christmas, like the pine, the chocolate and the brandy have gone, be sure to replace them.
