APRIL 2018
What’s new
CAFÉ COCO TANG
After more than two years of extensive planning and renovations, Coco Tang has now officially opened their new Café to the public.
They’ve also commissioned all their coffee & tea ware to match, making the experience in the café all the more quaint.
The unique combination of Speciality Coffee, Oriental Bakery, Cocktail Bar and Vietnamese Kitchen make this new place a break from the norm.
Much of the café has been built with décor exported in two shipments out of Ho Chi Minh City. As well as small items such as the traditional Vietnamese “Phin” metal Coffee filters, there is also larger items like, French style window shutters, bespoke handmade floor tiles & reclaim vintage Panelling and some giant plant pots -which are so large they have been designed with table tops to seat a group of up to eight.
They have a focus of serving all fresh food, just like the street food in Vietnam, and to stay in keeping with relaxed Vietnamese style -it’s all counter service and casual dining throughout the day. The food is all served in bespoke ceramics, designed by Coco Tang and hand thrown from a local potter.
You can find Café Coco Tang on Byard Land in Nottingham City Centre, open from 10am-10pm everyday.
CODS SCALLOPS LONG EATON The Cods Scallops who were short-listed in the Seafish’s National Fish & Chip Awards for the Best Restaurant in the UK, recently opened it’s 3rd premises in Long Eaton. The old Fulton Foods store on Tamworth Road is currently being transformed into the awardwinning fish and chip shop, which is just weeks away from opening. As well as a takeaway, there will be a 46-seater restaurant with seaside decor and a wet fish counter so customers can take home their tasty catch.
BUSINESS HQ
Two sisters from Nottingham have worked together to transform a derelict Victorian lace mill in Carrington into a multi-purpose business centre. After two years in the making, Business HQ has opened its doors to Nottingham’s vibrant professional community.
Business HQ offer co-working spaces, a virtual office system, a meeting room that seats 16, communal areas, and fully serviced private offices that accommodate teams of up to 20. The facilities cater to a number of business needs and structures. The building on Oak Street dates back to 1882, with traces of its industrial history scattered throughout its design. Sisters Kim and Alex Gammon have taken charge of the project: “There is a real demand in Nottingham for flexible and high-end office spaces. With my background in graphic design, I envisioned a creative space that 4 | IN Nottingham | April 18
worked for freelancers and businesses alike. This has really come to life in what you can see around you,” says Kim Gammon, Executive Manager at Business HQ ltd. Furnishings in communal areas, such as the original trap doors set as tables and framed with bright velvet seating, example some of the contrasts that add to the workspaces charm, incorporating contemporary design to give the space an artistic edge. The offices on the top floor of the business centre range from £560 to £815 per month, with CoWorking Memberships standing at £250 a month. These memberships allow for 24-hour access to co-working space, kitchen facilities, breakout areas and a courtyard. Businesses can also choose to rent the meeting room at Business HQ, which features a conference screen, super-fast wi-fi and refreshments for £22 per hour or £145 a day.
Amongst the most popular cod and haddock, there will be over 20 species of fresh fish available daily, all cooked to order, including sea bass, hake, salmon, monkfish and lobster plus freshly caught seafood such as prawns, scallops, crab and oysters. The restaurant is fully licensed, so diners can enjoy a beer with their batter; glass of bubbly with their oysters; or even take a bottle of wine home with their takeaway. The Cods Scallops Tamworth Road are open 9.30am to 9.30pm for the wet fish shop and 11.30am until 9.30pm for the takeaway and restaurant.

Review By Sophie Colley
SUSHIMANIA SUSHIMANIA IS NOTTINGHAM’S NEW SUSHI RESTAURANT THAT OFFERS MUCH MORE THAN JUST FISH. The ever-expanding restaurant has added Nottingham to its already existing branches totalling 8 restaurants now across the UK with other restaurants in places such as London, Oxford, Brighton, Reading and Edgware.
Speaking with the owners, it was very clear she wouldn’t serve anything they wouldn’t want to eat themselves. With the fish being sent from London to ensure the highest of quality, you’ll be surprised how amazingly fresh the food tastes. When we arrived, we were greeted with friendly smiles and were directed straight to our seats. The first thing we noticed was how beautiful the décor was. With huge traditional umbrellas hung from the ceiling, cultural framed artwork and oriental storage caddies, it creates the perfect authentic eating environment.
With Cambridge in planning, there’s a reason for Sushimania’s exciting expansions and that’s because of the authentic experience, fresh ingredients and exceptional tasting foods.
Now comes the exciting part of trying their food. With a huge selection on offer we decided to ask the chef to send out a mixture of the best dishes, catering for a few vegetarian options as well.
Sushimania offers a vast variety of food which caters for all, even you vegetarians out there. With offers of all you can eat for £16.80 per person, loyalty points on every online order and ½ price of lunchtime and after 10pm, you are sure to enjoy a delightful meal.
The first dish to come out was the Spicy Dragon Rolls and what a way to start. The tempura prawn, avocado and cucumber encased with white rice and salmon sashimi drizzled with spicy mayonnaise was unbelievable.
6 | IN Nottingham | April 18
The fresh soft texture of the fish, vegetables and rice against the kick from the spicy mayonnaise created the perfect concoction. Afterwards came the Tempura Moriawase. This was a mixture of battered king prawns, fish and vegetables. The prawns were extremely fresh and paired with the light crispy batter they created some of the best prawns we’ve ever tasted. Having never tried battered vegetables, we were pleasantly surprised at how tasty they were. With our taste buds eager for more, they brought out 5 pieces of Gyoza: Fried Chicken Dumplings. Wow! As a meat alternative for sushi these were delicious.
THE FRESH SOFT TEXTURE OF THE FISH, VEGETABLES AND RICE AGAINST THE KICK FROM THE SPICY MAYONNAISE CREATED THE PERFECT CONCOCTION
They were the perfect amount of meat that was very light, full of flavour and beautifully wrapped. Following, came a couple of raw fish dishes and one of them was called Nami Shashimi. First thing we noticed was how bright and beautifully presented this dish was. With mixtures of raw salmon, tuna and seabass, this dish is a definite must try for any sushi lover. Accompanying this dish was 5 pieces of Salmon Tataki. With the salmon briefly cooked just to seal the outside but left raw in the middle, it created such a beautiful taste and texture and against the kick of the ponzu dressing, the salmon tasted incredible. Next came a vegetarian dish: Tofu Salad. As far as tofu goes, this was some of the best tofu we’ve tasted and paired with the mixed salad and homemade dressing, it was heavenly. As if we hadn’t of had enough food already, the waitresses kept bringing out more. Dynamite Spider Roll was the next delicious dish we tried. With soft shell crab, cucumber, pickles and egg wrapped in white rice, seaweed and spicy mayonnaise, they were amazing. The colours, texture and taste were the perfect concoction and all 4 of the rolls were instantly gone.
FRIED CHICKEN DUMPLINGS. WOW! AS A MEAT ALTERNATIVE FOR SUSHI THESE WERE DELICIOUS. THEY WERE THE PERFECT AMOUNT OF MEAT THAT WAS VERY LIGHT, FULL OF FLAVOUR AND BEAUTIFULLY WRAPPED. Alongside this came another dish called Salmon Teriyaki and we were blown away with the flavours. Who knew grilled salmon could taste so wonderful dressed in a teriyaki sauce with mixed vegetables! After thinking we couldn’t possibly eat any more food, the owner Kim came over to tell us we had to try their version of their Chicken Katsu Curry. We were not disappointed. The breaded chicken against the mild curry sauce was delicious and a recommendation to all if you fancy an alternative dish to raw fish.
One thing that was made very clear during our Sushimania experience was that the food and customers were their top priority. The attention to details with the food presentation and flavours is incredible, making it look too good to eat. Also, if you had any doubt with the menu, the staff were more than happy to explain and help you pick the perfect dishes for yourself. So, as you can see, our Sushimania experience was incredible and the next time you’re out and about in or visiting Nottingham, we highly recommend Sushimania located within the Chapel Bar area of the city.
WITH HUGE TRADITIONAL UMBRELLAS HUNG FROM THE CEILING, CULTURAL FRAMED ARTWORK AND ORIENTAL STORAGE CADDIES, IT CREATES THE PERFECT AUTHENTIC EATING ENVIRONMENT.

TAKING THE LEAD
BE A LEADER NOT A FOLLOWER. WHEN I WAS TOLD OF THE SUBJECT MAT TER FOR THIS FEATURE, I HAD SEVERAL IDEAS ABOUT WHAT I COULD WRITE. I considered exploring women leading in their chosen fields, feminism, the fact that taking the lead doesn’t always mean taking the front seat – but the concept which stood out to me, the most, was being proactive in taking on leadership. Taking the lead often involves continuing – persevering – when there are no easy options and refusing to buckle under opposition. It is realising that there may well be arduous tasks ahead, with difficult decisions, but doing so anyway. It is everyday bravery in the face of the unknown and, with so many people my age making daunting decisions about where they want to go and who they want to be, it is making the choice to take the lead yourself, which is brave in itself. At Nottingham Girls’ High School, it is a wellaccepted fact that every girl has both the potential and opportunity to lead and, with this is mind, I’d encourage everyone to seize opportunities available to them. Although we live in a society that is far more progressive than it once was, it is important to remember that we still have a long way to go. We are the ones to lead by example. So, as you read this, I urge you to be proactive: take the lead in the things that matter to you so that someday, someone else has the chance to do the same, whatever their aspirations. Take the lead. Grasp it, grasp it tightly, and don’t be ashamed to show passion and heart: these are things to be proud of.
‘SO, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO WITH YOUR FUTURE?’ A QUESTION THAT MAY DAUNT, THRILL, CONFUSE OR EVEN DISMAY MANY INDIVIDUALS OUR AGE. THE FUTURE IS A BAFFLING CONCEPT THAT MANY PEOPLE SEEM TO THINK EPITOMISES WHAT SIXTH FORM LIFE IS INEVITABLY CENTRED AROUND. What do you want to study? Which universities do you want to go to? Are you sure that’s what you want to be doing for the rest of your life?
Whilst men would receive recognition and appreciation for their contribution towards science, Ball was neglected adulation. Instead, her work was ‘taken’ by the male president of her university, and was then credited to him.
Every individual has their own goals and aspirations for their own future and, whether you aspire to be an avid astronomer or even a passionate palaeontologist, those should be embraced to the fullest extent.
With this in mind, when I hear the phrase “Taking the lead”, I believe that all women stand united in the fight towards social progression and diversity within all sectors of society. Women are holistic in their abilities; from management, finance or science, these areas have unfortunately been widely dominated by men.
I have always strived to go into medicine, but getting there is a lot harder than simply ‘wanting’ to become a doctor. The long hours of exams, work experience, volunteering and general university ‘unknowns’ that immerses the life of 16-18 year olds seems an endless whirlpool of boxes waiting to be ticked, but it will be worth the effort.
Now is a time to take the lead. From the minute you take your first breath to the hours you spend dreaming, millions of complex mechanisms occur in your body – thousands of which lends itself to complications and mistakes; something that cannot be explained with just fifty percent of the human race.
Mahatma Ghandi famously said, ‘The future depends on what you do today’. It couldn’t be more accurate. Although being told this several times, we all know that acting on that phrase is not as easy as it may seem.
As a sixth form student pursuing sciences, the mere idea of the opportunity to lead the future of science is exhilarating; the liberty to enquire into areas of human understanding allows women to illustrate their creativity and intelligence: integrate new techniques into the scientific community, whilst simultaneously explaining questions previously thought to be impossible.
Even now, for girls, there are several hurdles that we must overcome; gender pay gaps, the lack of positions in STEM jobs, as well as the absence of women in the highest positions of pay and power. Consequently, it is now even more critical to grasp each opportunity that comes your way. Shape the future you have before you. Make it the best and most rewarding future it can be. Take the lead.
Thank you to Adaline Opare-Anim,Tanisha Rajah and Zainah Sindhoo (Deputy Head Girls) at Nottingham Girls’ High School, for contributing to our education feature! 10 | IN Nottingham | April 18
TAKING A LEAD IN SCIENCE. RESILIENCE, PERSEVERANCE AND ENDURANCE – THESE WERE THE CHARACTERISTICS SHOWCASED BY ALICE BALL IN THE 1900S WHEN SHE WAS THE FIRST WOMEN TO ADVANCE THE TREATMENT OF LEPROSY.
This can all be made possible if women were to take the lead. Easier said than done; once again we must surpass resistance and demand for equal opportunity. However, a future where ideas and actions are accumulated to represent all genders is a future where science will break its limits and unveil deeper understandings of the foundations that create life as we know it.

From the electrical charge that sparks human life, to the beating of our hearts and the memories we make, six performers use dance and acrobatics to delve deep into the human body, tracing the amazing story of energy in our lives. In the Charge’s exhilarating multi-media production, digital projections create a magical world on stage where dancers and images interact seamlessly, bringing to life stories of energy in our own bodies. An exciting fusion of art and science, Charge was inspired by work with partners from the University of Oxford on the role of electricity in the human body. Charge is the third element of Kevin Finnan’s Earth Trilogy, developing on themes explored in Scattered (2009) and Broken (2013) about our relationship with water and the Earth.

The stand-up, vibe magnet and London’s saddest DJ ™ would love to promise The Darkness of Robins won’t be an hour-long yell of a show, but he can’t. WE ALL KNOW THAT JANUARY, FEBRUARY AND EVEN MARCH ARE TRIAL MONTHS AND THE REAL NEW YEAR STARTS IN SPRING. THEY DON’T, BUT MANY OF US ACTUALLY STRUGGLE TO DO ALL THE AMAZING THINGS WE PLANNED TO DO AND ACHIEVE THE GOALS WE WANT. If the weather doesn’t make you feel less motivated, then I’m pretty sure that something will have gotten in the way and maybe life’s bogged you down. It’s important to remember that nothing blooms all year so don’t expect yourself to. However, it’s finally spring and the perfect time to re-energise yourself and take back control. Here’s my top tips to energise yourself and put a spring in your step.
GET A GOODNIGHT’S SLEEP
Make a set time to go to bed and to wake up. Starting your day well and full recharged will help you seize the day and keep you motivated to get all of your tasks done. 16 | IN Nottingham | April 18
PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP This will also have a knock on effect to your mood at the end of the day as you have been productive.
REGULAR EXERCISE
Find something you actually enjoy doing, for me it’s walking. Yes I love the gym and weight training. However, I’m not always motivated or in the mood to do that, but walking is something I can fit into my day even when I’m busy. Remember exercise shouldn’t feel like a chore, it should be something that you look forward to, this way you will keep it for life.
HAVE A SPRING CLEAN
I’m talking de-clutter everything, your wardrobe, your fridge, your desk, your car, your social media, your mind and your life. Remove anything that brings your negative thoughts and feelings.

EAT WHOLESOME, DELICIOUS, IN SEASON PRODUCE
Food always tastes better when it’s in season and you’ll always feel better when you fuel yourself with a nutritious and delicious meal. Why not give yourself the challenge of cooking one new recipe every 1-2 weeks using foods that are season. Rhubarb is currently in season, why not experiment and make yourself a healthier dessert.

KEEPING MOTIVATED LOOKING FOR ADVICE ON HOW TO GET INTO FITNESS OR LOST MOTIVATION? WE ASKED PERSONAL TRAINER; JOE BYRNE, SOME QUESTIONS ABOUT FITNESS AND HE GAVE SOME GREAT TIPS AND ADVICE! HOW DO YOU KEEP YOURSELF MOTIVATED? My main motivation is to progress and better my self every day, whether that is hitting my own goals that I’ve set out to achieve or helping others fulfill their potential.
WHERE TO START TO GET INTO FITNESS? First of all you must of have a plan of action before setting off in the fitness world. Set your self a target that is achievable, some can be really simple, for examply; going to the gym 3 times a week or going out running 3 times a week.
The plan is always to better yourself after your targets have been met which will give you more confidence to do even more challenging battles such as 10k run or a half marathon.
IS IT IMPORTANT TO SPEAK/ TRAIN WITH A PT AND WHY? It can be quite important to sit down with a PT to get information. A PT can give you a lot of confidence and build up your self esteem helping you train, set goals to ultimately achieve them, so you are able to have the confidence to do it yourself. It’s even important for PT’s to talk to other PT’s to learn and gather new information to be able to give to others.
3 TIPS ON PLANNING WORKOUTS AND MEALS: •Plan your weekly food diary by food preperation.
3 MOTIVATIONAL TIPS: •Train harder than yesterday. •Never skip a Monday. •Believe in yourself. WHY DID YOU GET INTO FITNESS AND BECOME A PT? One of my reasons why I got into fitness and became a PT, was like any teenager - to get stronger and look better which I’m still continuing today. However, my main reason is to help others and make people happy in themselves. I lost two of my best friends through mental health reasons back in 2012. This gave me so much motivation and drive to help others. To help them realise that they can do better, they can progress and be happy.
Knowing what you will eat each day, will help you stick to your own personal diet.
•Always change your routine whether that is cardio, resistance or free weight work which keeps you on own your toes and motivated. •Record your results and information, for results can be something such as hitting a personal best and information can be loosing or gaining weight depending or your goals.

SPORT WEAR WHETHER YOU’RE A GYM LOVER OR NEWBIE, THERE’S NOTHING BETTER THAN NEW SPORTSWEAR! BUT DON’T WORRY ABOUT “LOOKING THE PART” IT’S ABOUT HAVING FUN AND FEELING GOOD WHILE YOU’RE SWEATING AND FEELING THE BURN!
I highly recommend the High Impact front zip Sports Bras from Marks and Spencer. They’re really supportive without putting too much pressure. The front zip is just fantastic, because if you’ve done a big work out or arm day, you won’t have that “sweaty no energy” struggle trying to get the bra off!
TOPS With so many different styles, colours and patterns you can really make a statement and have fun! Like these Souluxe T-shirts, they have fun patterns and bright colours. They’re in breathable fabric and aren’t clingy.
One thing I love about sportswear is there are so many colours and patterns at affordable prices so there’s no need to have super expensive, plain, black gear.
SPORT BRAS First things first ladies – Sports Bras! I do think when it comes to active wear, that is the one thing to invest in. Regardless of your bust size, they need support!
WATER LEGGINGS Admittedly in the past I’ve always got plain black, leggings. But I find that bright and colourful patterned leggings are just as flattering and fun! These from Primark are comfortable, have a high waist and do not move when getting your squat on!

With fitness and being healthy you need to be drinking plenty of water daily, but for some it’s hard remembering to drink water. I once did until I got myself a water bottle from Hydratem8. These have times marked on the bottle to help you remember and you’ll be surprised how easy it becomes to drink more water. With currently two sizes to choose from with so many slogans and colours there’s a bottle for everyone!

ESTABLISHED FOR ALMOST 7 YEARS, MULTI AWARD WINNING HAVELI RESTAURANT, LOCATED IN CHILWELL, OFFER AN EXPERIENCE OF TRADITIONAL AND FRESH INDIAN FOOD. We were warmly greeted by staff dressed in traditional Indian clothing. As we were shown to our seats, I noticed every table was dressed and set ready for other guests and napkins created to look like swans – lovely detail. The rest of the décor was very warm and cosy, with large canvases of beautiful Indian women dressed in Saris.

After ordering drinks, one of the directors invited us to meet the chefs. All of them had worked all over the world in top establishments and have been at Haveli from the beginning. They told us that they specialise in 5 sauce bases, which are freshly made on a daily basis. The chefs continued to tell us about the quality of their Lamb and Lamb Shanks and how they always slow cook them for 4–5 hours to achieve the perfect tenderness. Out of 13 starter dishes, we opted for the Tandoori Lamb Chops and Tandoori Chicken Tikka, which were beautifully presented. The Tandoori Lamb Chops were tender and perfectly crispy, coated in a balanced spicy marinade. The Tandoori Chicken Tikka pieces, had a lovely kick of spice and melted in the mouth.
HAVELI
While waiting for the main courses, a passion fruit sorbet was served to cleanse our palettes. With over 18 dishes to choose from, we chose Murgh Makhani and Desi Lamb. The presentation was perfect.
DURING OUR DINNER WE WERE PRESENTED WITH 3 NON-ALCOHOLIC COCKTAILS; STRAWBERRY DAIQUIRI, MOJITO AND PASSION FRUIT MARTINI. THEY TASTED AS GOOD AS THEY LOOKED!
The Murgh Makhani had tender chicken pieces in a creamy tomato sauce, which was aromatic and mouth-watering. The Desi Lamb, had good amount of spice in its sauce and the lamb was really juicy and full of flavour. We were told that The Desi Lamb was originally an old rural dish from Northern India and was traditionally made in a clay pot. Alongside these we were served pilau rice, which was fluffy with lovely seasoning and a plain naan bread. The dishes tasted amazing and reminded me of when I was travelling back in India – absolutely beautiful. During our dinner we were presented with 3 nonalcoholic cocktails; Strawberry Daiquiri, Mojito and Passion Fruit Martini. They tasted as good as they looked! By the end of our main courses we were satisfyingly full. However, the staff persuaded us to try two desserts, we just couldn’t resist.
THE DISHES TASTED AMAZING AND REMINDED ME OF WHEN I WAS TRAVELLING BACK IN INDIA – ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. We had a Gulab Jamum, which is a very traditional Indian dessert and served warm with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was light, with cake sponge texture and beautifully sweet, just delicious. We also had a Malteser Cheesecake, of course this isn’t a traditional Indian dessert, but it was very chocolatey with a lovely biscuit base. Haveli go the extra mile to make sure you feel extraordinary special and welcome. I’ve visited Haveli before with my husband, a few years ago. I had mentioned to the staff after our main courses, that it was his birthday.
What happened next was beyond our expectation. Three members of staff performed a traditional Indian song to my husband. He then was treated with a small birthday cake, which was beautifully decorated and presented with a candle on the top. This was a wondeful surpise and completely complementary! Haveli are a modern restaurant, with traditional values, who pay attention to detail and make sure that their customers are looked after. They’ve also partnered with some local charities, and organise charity dinner events and support other charities in many other ways too. If you’re wanting to experience beautiful Indian cuisine, with a warm and traditional atmosphere, then I would recommend heading to Haveli Restaurant in Chilwell.

Beauty By Carly Swift
BEAUTY FITNESS WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING OUT IN THE GYM, THE LAST THING I WANT TO THINK ABOUT IS MY MAKEUP SLIDING OFF MY FACE, WHEN I’M SWEATING. To be honest, I very rarely wear makeup at the gym. As you can see in the photo above, sweat is my highlighter! The exception would be if I had a really bad nights sleep and really needed to hide my dark circles. While I’m working out, I want my skincare to be working too. So if you can go to the gym makeup free, why not apply an extra pump of your favourite serum or moisturiser or both to your skin. If you just can’t go anywhere without any makeup at all, then here’s some sweat-proof products that have lasted my workouts.
CONCEALER
I don’t think it’s good for your skin to wear a foundation while working out. Your skin needs to breathe. However, a concealer to help hide a blemish or dark circles is ok. I recommend Rimmel London lasting finish breathable concealer. It does exactly what it claims; Lightweight and Medium Coverage. It doesn’t cake or crease and lasts through sweat and tears. 22 | IN Nottingham | April 18
BROWS
If your brows are practically perfect, then lucky you! For the rest of us our brows can look non-existant without some brow pencil or powder. I had enough of filling in my brows so I saved up and got them Microbladed. Honestly it was the best thing I did. I no longer have to worry about making time to fill them in at all now especially when heading to the gym. If you’re a bit tight for cash to have Microblading, then I would try a smudge-proof brow pencil. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz is great, as it has a brush one end and twist up pencil on the other. The formula is perfect and does not smudge at all.
LIP BALM The gym is definitely not a place to wear lipstick. Like I’ve already said - I want my skincare to be working while I’m working out. So I always wear a super moisturising lip balm while in the gym. I’m currently loving this YourGoodSkin Soothing Lip Balm. It’s really nourishing, hydrating and leaves my lips feeling super soft.
MOISTURISER
If I’m having a really bad skin day - feeling dry and generally rubbish, I’ll even pop on a hydrating facemask. Yes honestly, I have on many occasions! My favourite is Glamglow Thirstymud. It’s clear in colour, so no one will detect that you have a facemask on. It’ll just look like you’ve applied a lot of moisuriser! It smells of the beach and coconuts and will leave your skin feeling hydrated, plump and smooth.
WATER
Drink plenty of water! I can’t stress this enough! No matter how much makeup you apply you’re never going to hide the fact that your skin isn’t in it’s best condition. I used to drink pracitcally zero water and my skin was in such bad condition with blemishes and looking dull. Now I drink over two litres daily and my skin has minimal blemishes, looks brighter, healither and my makeup actually applies and sits better on my skin. Remember, the only person you should be worried about in the gym is yourself. Trust me, no one cares if you’ve got makeup on or not. Just get in there and work it!

From Gumbo and Cajun delicacies in Louisiana to amazing BBQ in Tennessee, the best fried chicken you are likely to experience and fried green tomatoes (much better than they sound!) there are fantastic foods to enjoy. And to wash it down, why not pop to the Jack Daniels distillery in Lynchburg, Tennessee! Getting around the region is easy. You can focus on the main cities of Nashville, Memphis and New Orleans or rent a car to experience more of the region.

YOU, YOUR HOME AND COLOUR THERE’S A REASON WE ALL LOVE A RAINBOW – RIGHT? AND, ALTHOUGH IT COULD BE THE PROMISE OF THE POT OF GOLD AT THE END OF IT, I STILL THINK IT’S THE COLOURS THAT PROVOKE THE EMOTION . Psychologists have studied colours and their influence on our mood, productivity and creativity. Understanding some of the results help to recognise how to use colour effectively in our homes. Some colour choices are obvious. The femininity of pinks, the bright happy hue of yellow, whilst greens are often used to create a tranquil, peaceful environment. Neutral colour schemes are currently very popular and grey is a backdrop which still features widely on the high street right now. Grey is a mature, self sufficient colour, but used alone, it can be perceived as dull. By lifting grey with something a little more light-hearted like the blush buttons on these curtains, it creates a softness and gives more depth and detail. A tool I use a lot when thinking about where to begin with a room is a colour wheel. 26 | IN Nottingham | April 18
You’ll find them on Amazon and other online sites for around £3. To work a colour scheme successfully there are a few general guidelines that can help.
Complementary colour schemes are created by using colours which sit opposite each other on the colour wheel.
They’re opposite because they balance each other. Have you ever walked into a room and thought ’wow!’ But couldn’t put your finger on what it was? It may be down to the clever combinations of colours and tones. The cool blue velvet on this sofa is a great example as it really pops against the warmth of the orange walls. This is why the two work together and provide a striking pairing. Another use of colour theory is to harmonise colours together. Use the same tone, or strength of colours and once again, a balanced scheme will be produced.
Pastels are particularly good when using this method as the tones are so gentle that lots of colours can be used together as none of them are overly dominant. And then of course, there is the very dominant black. It symbolises security, glamour and sophistication. As with all the colour advice, success is about balance and if you’d like to introduce black into a room consider how you might best use it. A trim on cushions or a border on curtains can create an elegant ‘boutique’ feel. Team it with gold and it becomes quite regal.
Pattern and texture are also important to black to ensure that it doesn’t look too flat or cold. The most important thing to remember when looking at colours for your home is how they make you feel personally. By applying some of the practical theories and then listening to your emotions your colour choices should have a positive and pleasing result – enjoy!
