What’s new
ANOTHER? WINE BAR CHAMPAGNE GARDEN
Fizz fans will now be able to enjoy their favourite tipple outside in the sunshine, as Nottingham’s first self-serve wine bar unveils its brand new champagne and prosecco garden.
Since its launch in October, people have been visiting Another? Wine Bar, to sample some of the 32 reds, whites, rosés and sparkling wines, which they pour themselves using special tasting machines. Sam Benjamin, owner of the Trinity Square venue, is looking forward to welcoming even more people now the champagne and prosecco garden is opened on 27th April.
“Self-serve wine is a completely new concept in Nottingham, but even we’ve been surprised by its popularity,” he said.
The expansion of Another? Wine Bar has led to the creation of two new jobs, bringing the total number to six.
“So far, our team has sold more than 16,500 glasses – and we’re expecting that number to increase significantly when we open our new outdoor bar”.
Another? Wine Bar is open Wednesday and Thursday 5.30pm-11pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm-12am and Sunday 12pm-10pm. The venue is also available for private hire on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Accommodating an extra 56 people, alongside the 60 seats indoors, the garden bar offers a selection of mini prosecco, both white and rosé champagne, and a range of beers from Estrella Galicia.
SAUCE ‘EM Sauce ’Em Chips is Nottingham’s one of a kind hot spot for chips with a saucy twist. They offer an exceptionally high quality of chips – peeled, cut and fried on site. Not impressive enough? Have your chips seasoned with any of our 8 tempting powders, from Cajun Spice to Texan BBQ. If that’s not enough to tantalize your taste buds, compliment your chips with a choice of 20 different well sought after sauces which you can choose to have served on the side, drizzled or drenched.
STILL not impressed? You can even top your chips off with hot melted cheese, maybe even add a little pizza sauce- if you’re brave enough. For the vegans and vegetarians out there; all our chips are fried in rapeseed oil and are made fresh to order for every single customer and nearly all our sauces are vegetarian friendly. Even the Lord Mayor himself has tried them and loved them. So now it’s your turn to give this innovative way of indulging in the nation’s all-time favourite snack a go. Sauce ’Em promises their chips will activate your flavour receptors like nothing you’ve tried before!

LUISA’S VEGAN CHOCOLATES
Luisa’s Bean-to-Bar Chocolates is open to the public now but the official grand opening where we would love for you to come down is on the 14th of June 2018. We are the only 100% bean-to-bar chocolate producers in Nottingham, working from the heart of Nottingham’s Creative Quarter in Sneinton Market to craft vegan, guilt-free chocolate gems of decadence. Our beans are all directly sourced from the Solomon Islands, where we work with the farmers there to create ethical, candid supply chains and ensure they receive the best prices for their beans
- once valued above gold and used as currency by the ancient Mayans! Our focus on purity means we take great care in evolving the flavour profile of each individual chocolate, a process that depends largely on the beans’ cultivation origins and growing conditions, much like a fine wine. It is equally important to us that as well as creating chocolates that taste amazing, we educate our consumers on the bean-to-bar process from start to finish, which all happens right here in our shop.
We want to hone in on producing unique, shareable moments of guilt-free happiness, all whilst treating our Earth fairly and reducing our negative impact as much as possible. We aim to make the finest chocolate in town - which just happens to be vegan! Follow Lusia on Instagram @luisasveganchocolates on facebook @veganchocolatesbyluisa and Twitter @Luisasveganchoc

PERKINS BAR & BISTRO
Their luxury Shepherd Huts won Best Boutique Accommodation with the Nottinghamshire Tourism Awards and that’s because they are incredible. Located within the grounds just down from Perkins Bar & Bistro, they have multiple huts available all year round. Something else Perkins Bar & Bistro offer is their Taste the Season every first Wednesday of the month. Here three local suppliers come together to bring the best seasonal produce for a six-course Tasting menu. Why not incorporate this into an overnight stay within one of their luxury Shepherd huts mentions above? If you’re looking for something to do on a Friday evening why not join Perkins Bar & Bistro for their Live Music night every Friday from 8pm? Perkins Bar & Bistro have hosted many parties, weddings and anniversaries over the years. Their beautiful venue can be partially or fully hired out for private events and they pride themselves on delivering a fantastic personalised service.
The premise where Perkins Bar & Bistro are located is completely breathtaking. Surrounded by the countryside, it’s so peaceful and relaxing. As soon as we walked in we were hit with this beautiful classic décor of vintage suitcases strapped to the walls, hand painted artwork and fresh flowers everywhere. They also have framed images dotted around showcasing the history of the venue and area – such a lovely touch. After looking around at all of the different rooms, we were taken through their conservatory into their outside seating area to take advantage of the lovely warm weather. Outside you can still see the old railway line which brings another touch of history to your experience. So far, we were blown away with their décor, location and history. Now it was time to sit down and look over the menu. Whilst we were still deciding on what to order, we were brought some water and served some chilli and fennel seed focaccia.
The flavours were delicious which made us extremely hungry and excited for the rest of the meal. We finally decided on their baresca favourites to start with, which is one of their sharing dishes. With garlic and chilli prawns, jamón Ibérico croquettes and aubergine tumbet, it was divine. The chilli prawns were so fresh and the garlic and chilli flavouring were the perfect amount, not too strong. The jamón Ibérico croquettes had the most amazing flavours and texture being beautifully crisp on the outside. Finally, the aubergine tumbet which consisted of aubergine, tomato, potato and chees gratin was a lovely mixture and a great starter.
ONE WORD - DELICIOUS! One thing Perkins Bar & Bistro are known for is their great local ingredients. Their pork for example is from Tollerton and a definite must try. With this in mind we also ordered their taste of pork dish: Sliced pork fillet, slow roast belly and cheek fritter, creamed potato, koffman cabbage and calvados cream sauce. It was incredible! The pork melted in the month and was beautifully tender. The fritter was perfectly crunchy and so full of flavour. Finally, the creamy mash was unbelievably light and fluffy which paired with their koffman cabbage, it brought all the flavours together.
By this point we were certainly filling up but we decided to take a look at the dessert menu. It would’ve been rude not too! We were amazed to see a smaller desert option for if you don’t have enough room. This is such a great idea! We went for their mini chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. One word – delicious! Whilst the weather was so warm we also decided to go for three scopes of their homemade sorbets: strawberry, raspberry and rhubarb. These were a lovely refreshing way to end our meal. IN Magazine had the most amazing time at Perkins Bar & Bistro and we highly recommend you pay them a visit – We sure can’t wait to go back!
Next came our main dishes and we were certainly impressed! Going for their Harker’s 30-day dry-aged 8oz Sirloin Steak from Hereford, it’s served with garlic mushrooms, roast cherry tomatoes and homemade chips with a peppercorn and brandy sauce. I’ve never tasted a steak so tender and juicy, it was amazing. Paired with their homemade chips which were beautifully crisp on the outside and light and fluffy in the centre it created the perfect dish. One I’d definitely recommend to all!
NEXT CAME OUR MAIN DISHES AND WE WERE CERTAINLY IMPRESSED!

Business By Fiona Duncan
TO NETWORK OR NOT TO NETWORK NOW MORE THAN EVER THE AVERAGE PERSON IN BUSINESS WHETHER SELF EMPLOYED OR AN EMPLOYEE... IS NETWORKING. Ten years ago when I first launched my business network RSViP, there were a handful of large organisations offering various networking solutions, all of which offered the same kind of format- heavily structured, pitch focused and ever so slightly stuffy. This was 100% my inspiration for stepping outside of the box and finding another, more enjoyable solution for networking - why not introduce a more social element to the current networking format, to offer a relaxed and less contrived way to make new connections and build new relationships with other business folk. It was a challenge in the beginning to educate the masses as to what I was trying to achieve, being as it was merely a light bulb moment in my head initially, but eventually the concept caught on more and more. Over the years, I have seen new networks come and go and more so than ever before, we see a huge growth in networks popping up across the East Midlands. My inbox is full of invitations to network at lawyers firms, banks, bars and even bakeries - all offering a different styles and formats. But how do you know which are worth your time? The short answer- Research. 8 | IN Nottingham | June 18
With a lot of things it’s a case of ‘suck it and see’‘try before you buy’ and all that, but with network events you can do your research in advance- check reviews, ask others if they have attended and what they thought, even Google... We at RSViP offer a free taster visit for first time guests- always look for those, but equally for us at the other side of things running the events, if someone isn’t willing to pay a fee to attend subsequent events or join your network and spends all of their time seeking out the freebies across the city, then they are not the clientele you necessarily want within your network. If they are not willing to spend to come to your network event, are they going to spend with you for your service? You have to speculate to accumulate and in order to mix in the right circles in business, so choosing the right networks for you is essential and it will cost maybe not a lot, but prepare to factor it into your marketing budget.
It isn’t about how many business cards you can collect over the working week and after all, time is money- in particular for smaller businesses who will notice a half day out of the office away from a productive day working both ‘on’ and ‘in’ their business. Remember too, you are a representation of your brand and your business services- so wouldn’t you naturally want to be seen at the right places with the right people who also mirror this? My advice- yes get out there and network - just be strategic about it. Okay I run a successful business network, but I will always tell people to go and try a few and then come back to us or vice versa- nine times out ten we see them again at some point and if we don’t then we wish all the best with their networking journey.
Many networks won’t be for you for whatever reason. It may be the format doesn’t suit you, or that the types of businesses there are not your market, or they come across as too amateur and disorganised, so be sure that you heavily consider not filling your diary for the month ahead with a selection of any old events just because you were invited, as it really isn’t a numbers game. Be strategic, be clever, be the tortoise not the hare and make the effort to forge healthy business relationships over a period of time.

IS THERE HONESTLY ANYTHING BETTER THAN GETTING STUCK INTO COCKTAILS & WINGS? – WE DON’T THINK SO HERE AT IN MAGAZINE! After spending our fair share of nights in their Nottingham branch, IN Magazine we’re very excited to be heading down to Bunk Derby. Opening their third branch now on Sadler Gate in Derby, Bunk brings you the perfect relaxed dining experience with a great atmosphere, quirky décor and not to mention amazing food. With neon signs, tropical plants and rustic décor, Bunk is beautifully unique. From their retro gaming stations to pick and mix sweets, they create an amazing place to eat.
16 | IN Nottingham | June 18
Minimal lighting coming through from their neon signs, candles and quirky lightbulbs, it creates such a relaxed and casual dining atmosphere. In their new Derby branch, they have incorporated mirrors which add so much to the décor making it appear more spacious. Also, they have now introduced an outdoor seating area in Derby which is an old converted warehouse with no roof.
THEY WERE INCREDIBLE. BUNKS WINGS ARE SIMPLY THE BEST. This is such a fun and quirky design and with lightbulbs strung along the beams we know this will become a popular summer destination spot! Now onto the Cocktails and Wings!
BUNK
Bunk are known for their authentic American chicken wings and their Bunk house cocktails.
With happy hour starting from opening at 5pm until 10pm, their Bunk house cocktails are only £4.50 each, so you can’t go wrong! Mango Breeze, Singapore Sling and English Garden are just a few examples of some of the amazing cocktails Bunk has to offer in their house cocktails. For our visit we decided to try their Premium cocktails after much recommendation. We went for their Zombie cocktail and their Drumstick cocktail. Wow they were delicious! Next came the chicken and we were very excited. Bunk offer a wide variety of sauces and they always like to add new sauces into the mix so keep your eyes open for some new amazing concoctions. With their offer of half price wings 5-10pm every night, you’d be crazy not to pay them a visit.
For our visit we ordered 10 pieces of traditional wings in their smocked BBQ sauce, 10 pieces of pieces of boneless wings with their teriyaki sauce then some curly fries and onion rings on the side.
One thing that’s great about Bunk is that they offer vegetarian options too. With the option of tasty chicken flavoured Quorn nuggets tossed in your favourite Bunk seasoning you can’t go wrong.
They were incredible. Bunks wings are simply the best.
THEIR CURLY FRIES ARE TO DIE FOR AND A STAPLE MUST HAVE EVERY TIME WE GO.
Their traditional wings coated in their smocked BBQ sauce were so juicy, tender and full of flavour. The boneless wings with their teriyaki sauce were just as delicious. We highly recommend. Their onion rings were beautifully crisp on the outside and so tasty. Their curly fries are to die for and a staple must have every time we go.
So, as you can see, IN Magazine had an amazing time at Bunk and we highly recommend you pay them a visit on Stoney Street or Lower Parliament Street in Nottingham. Or if you’re in or visiting Derby head down to their third branch on Sadler Gate.

WORLD-CLASS TENNIS SET FOR NOTTINGHAM THE NATURE VALLEY OPEN IN NOTTINGHAM IS ONE OF THE JEWELS IN THE BRITISH TENNIS CROWN AND HERALDS THE START OF THE GRASSCOURT SEASON. PRESTIGIOUS TENNIS TOURNAMENTS IN THE CITY HAVE A LONG HISTORY DATING BACK TO THE 1970S, BUT THE WTA WOMEN’S EVENT BEGAN BACK IN 2015 AND HAS QUICKLY BECOME A STANDOUT MOMENT IN THE NOTTINGHAM SPORTING CALENDAR. The week-long event is combined with the men’s ATP Challenger tournament as tennis stars from all over the world will converge on the Nottingham Tennis Centre from 9th to 17th June. This year’s women’s event has a star-studded line-up with four of the world’s top 25 set to make an appearance. Ashleigh Barty, ranked 18th in the world, Magdaléna Rybáriková(19), Naomi Osaka (21) and British No.1 Johanna Konta (23) are also joined by last year's winner Donna Vekic, Olympic gold medalist Monica Puig and British No.2 Heather Watson. 20 | IN Nottingham | June 18
WTA Tournament Director, Rebecca James, said: “This is a top-class line-up and one I am sure the public are excited about seeing. It is fantastic to have four of the world's top 25 in Nottingham and it shows how important this tournament is for the grass-court season. “The tournament in Nottingham is now in its fourth year and it grows bigger each year. The players all love coming to compete at the Nottingham Tennis Centre to play on the fantastic grass-courts and in front of the amazing knowledgeable spectators.” Slovakian Rybáriková reached the semi-finals in Nottingham last year and was also a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, before losing to eventual champion Garbiñe Muguruza.
“I am excited to return to Nottingham and am looking forward to playing in the Nature Valley Open again,” said Rybáriková. “I enjoyed my time in the city and at the tournament last year. The grass courts are excellent, so it is the perfect way for me to start my preparation for Wimbledon. I had a great run to the semi-final last time and I hope I can improve on that this year.” British tennis fans will be looking forward to seeing Konta who has risen dramatically through the world rankings in the last couple of years. At the end of 2014, the British No.1 was ranked 150th in the world but by July of last year, the 26-year-old had reached a career-high of fourth in the world.
Konta has won three WTA tour titles and 2017 saw her reach the quarter-final at Australian Open and the semi-finals at Wimbledon. Konta, who will play in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne this year, said: “I’m so excited to be returning to play these fantastic tournaments in the summer. The grass-court season is one of my favourites and nothing compares to competing at home with passionate fans, friends and family who are behind you all the way. “I know I’m incredibly lucky to have the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd, it’s such a special feeling. These tournaments also provide me with the perfect pathway to Wimbledon. Last year it proved to be the best preparation possible as I enjoyed my most successful Wimbledon ever and hopefully it will have the same effect for 2018. “As always I know there will be a really strong player field at Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne and I’ll face some tough opponents in competitive matches, but I can’t wait to get on court and fly the flag for British tennis."
The men’s challenger tournament runs alongside the women’s event and one of Britain’s rising men’s tennis stars, Cameron Norrie, has confirmed his participation at the event. The 22-year-old shot to fame in Britain’s Davis Cup tie with Spain in Marbella in February when he came from two sets down to beat Roberto Bautista who was ranked 91 places above him. Norrie said: “I’m really looking forward to coming to Nottingham to play on the excellent grass courts. I know that the courts there will be a fantastic preparation for me as a lead up to Wimbledon as it will be a good opportunity for me to get used to the grass and to play well in the event.” Men’s Tournament Director, Paul Hutchins, said: “We are really pleased that Cam is coming to the tournament. He has had an interesting career since being a top-10 world junior, recently representing GB in Davis Cup action against Spain where he played unbelievably well to beat top clay-court specialist Roberto Bautista.
“Before turning pro in 2017, Cam was a top All American College player at Texas Christian College and has adapted well to the ATP Tour, recently qualifying in two ATP Masters events in Indian Wells and Miami. It will be good for the Nottingham public to welcome Cam.” In addition to world-class tennis on court, there is plenty on offer for fans off court too, including al fresco dining and the Explore Wimbledon exhibition that will give spectators the opportunity to actually step into the footsteps of past tennis legends. The annual Family Fun Weekend will take place on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June where children can get involved in various activities and the everpopular Ladies Day will be returning on Wednesday 13th June. The Nature Valley Open is a one of the most sought-after tennis events of the season and is one of the British Tennis grass-court lead up events to Wimbledon. KITTY TRAY GLAMOROUS, WITTY AND COMPLETELY OUTRAGEOUS, KITTY TRAY HAS BECOME ONE OF NOTTINGHAM’S MOST ICONIC DRAG QUEENS. IN MAGAZINE WERE SUPER EXCITED TO MEET HER IN THE OLD MARKET SQUARE! With style and utter sass, Kitty and her fellow Kittens strutted across Nottingham City Centre, grabbing lots of attention from members of the public. We had so much fun with Kitty and her Kittens, it’s a day we will never forget. Ash Cross was once a photography teacher, but four years ago, he decided to stop teaching and start performing, becoming a professional Drag Queen. Ash has always had an interest in drag queens and dressing up, but for many years had only been tempted to reveal his own alter ego in the safety net that existed at fancy dress parties. “Being able to express my creativity in such a direct way, and seeing the reaction of others really pushed me into bringing it out more often, and so Kitty Tray was born,” Ash told us. The name for a drag queen is usually the hardest thing to decide on. “I wanted a name that was classic but funny, something that people would warm to and imagine her living next door to you. 24 | IN Nottingham | June 18
"Even though she is called Kitty, so is not fond of cats,” Ash said. Ash spent time creating a back story for Kitty to make her real as possible. “Kitty is a warm-hearted, funny and very eccentric character. She tends to say things that people are thinking but are too scared to say,” Ash continued. “Kitty has never been married, even though she always says she has a husband. In reality she lives in her caravan alone telling people she’s 32, when actually she’s in her 50s. After having a one-hit wonder back in the 80s, which nobody’s heard of, she turned to performing on the circuit to make a little bit of extra money,” Ash explained. “Kitty can even eat a Twix in a single bite!” laughed Ash.
Ash took a lot of inspiration from watching RuPaul's Drag Race. “Seeing the incredible talent of those artists on the big screen, I knew that I had to get involved with this amazingly creative community.” When getting ready for a show or a TV appearance, it’s all about the makeup! It can take up to two hours if Kitty is appearing on TV and even more for a for a big live show. Kitty’s shows vary in style. “We have a mixture of one woman shows that focuses on the main star. We have so far worked with Shangela which sold out! Both myself and my drag daughter Kitten T were the support acts for that show, but normally we have other artists that form the ‘Hauz of kats’.
With Kitty’s local shows, she has worked hard to promote local performers and is constantly working to create a great space for artists to learn their skills. “Since the 1980s I feel Nottingham has struggled with its gay scene. There is a community, but there are very few places that the community can go express itself. "I have been doing drag for only four years and have worked hard to create places where people can enjoy the art of drag. But there are others who have been working for years entertaining in Nottingham,” said Kitty. Every Drag Queen has a style in their wardrobe, accessories and makeup which is very important in securing their own personality. Kitty’s clothes are mainly influenced by Vivienne Westwood and similar fashion designers. Kitty couldn’t do this all on her own without the support of friends, which she refers them as her Kittens.
“Kitten T is my most beloved drag daughter. She is still fairly new on the drag scene, but is already recognisable. When you look at her you instantly do a double take and ask if she’s a real woman.” Said Kitty. Another drag daughter is Luna Moon. “She is a Bio Queen, which means she is a biological woman in drag,” she has been doing drag for less than a year. Feline Scarlett Devereaux is the newest edition to the Kitty family. “She is the winner of a local competition that I created called “Kitty’s Drag Race”. With her stunning looks and electric personality she is the one to look out for in the future. “I cannot forget my two amazing helpers Kelsay and Jessica. They are always there for me when everything is crazy behind the stage.” Kitty continued.
It doesn’t matter if you are a drag fan or not, as people from all ages ranging from 14 to over 85 attend her shows. If you love laughter, entertainment, music and dancing then Kitty’s shows are for you. Recently it’s been announced that Kitty and The Hauz of Kats will be working with Nottingham Pride 2018. “I am very excited to be working with gay pride. On the day I will be on the float, which will be very exciting and on the main stage hosting and entertaining with my kats. In the evening I will be hosting a Ru Paul show at Rescue Rooms, a one woman show by Sharon Needles,” said Kitty. We cannot wait to see Kitty again at one of her shows and look forward to working with her again in the future!

FIRST DATE OUTFIT RULES YOU SHOULD BREAK I LOVED DATING. YES IT WAS DIFFICULT AT TIMES AND THERE WAS A LOT OF KISSING FROGS BUT ULTIMATELY IN RETROSPECT IT WAS FULL OF IMPORTANT LIFE LESSONS. WHAT I DIDN’T LOVE WAS THE BUILD UP TO A DATE. My first few dates as a newbie singleton without much previous dating experience relied a lot on advice from friends and the internet. I’d been in a relationship for six years. Times had changed, splitting a bill didn’t make men recoil anymore and the usual “date locations” of my once 18 year old self were no longer suitable, because let’s face it who can get to know another human being whilst sat in a dark cinema surrounded by the aroma of popcorn? When it came to getting dressed for the date, much like every single time I have to dress for an occasion, I’d have a wardrobe induced breakdown. Everyone had their own take on the best first date outfits and thankfully, the general overall consensus was to wear whatever makes you happy and what you feel comfortable in, hurrah! But of course there were the “first date rules”. These are the ones you should ignore...
RULE #1 - BUY A NEW OUTFIT There’s no greater satisfaction than snipping the tags off of a new dress that’s for sure, but there’s also no other feeling like the new shoes you bought, rubbing your heels to shreds until you’re walking with a limp, or realising that the dress you snipped the tags off, is super static and rides up when you walk. 26 | IN Nottingham | June 18
By Charlotte Pearce
I’ve found myself cursing my choice to wear a new item of clothing on a date only to find that it looked better on the hanger. There’s enough awkwardness and nerves on a first date, so wearing your staple skirt that goes with everything or fail safe boots is a safe bet. After all, the last thing you want is to be worrying about whether them skinny jeans are more camel toe, than Olivia Newton John in Grease or having to readjust an over enthusiastic wrap top.
RULE #2 - DRESS TO IMPRESS Let me hear it from the women at the back “I dress for myself and no-one else”. I get that when you’re dating, first impressions count and that begins before you even open your mouth, so of course, you want to make the right one but to the detriment of your own personality and sense of style. If you look in the mirror and you like what you see before your date and you feel comfortable, that is all that should matter. Don’t try to fit the image you think they would be impressed by.
RULE #3 - BREAK AWAY FROM ALL BLACK “Men like colour” say E-Harmony, so we’re told to drop the all black ensemble and ignite some colour into our first date outfits as it signifies a happy, energetic and warm individual, attributes most single people are looking for in a partner. Colour is in my mind just that, a colour. I gravitate towards colourful clothes naturally, but I’m equally as comfortable in black skinnies and black roll neck jumper dependent on my mood. If your feel-good outfit comes in 50 Shades of Black (grey or navy) don’t feel the pressure to overload on colour just to show that you’re fun or playful.
RULE #4 - SHOW OFF YOUR FIGURE (BUT NOT ALL AT ONCE) Don’t over advertise the goods you’ve got to give. Stick to either your chest, arms, legs or back as the main focus only, so as not to come off too sexy or trashy. But don’t swamp your body in fabric so that you have no shape. We don’t always need to look to flatter our figures or show off our best assets, I promise you. In fact, it’s perfectly okay to go oversized or non form fitting and still look good. If you want to wear the baggy culottes, over sized slogan tee or a cosy cardigan, that’s absolutely fine.
RULE #5 – DON’T OVERDO THE MAKEUP Is wearing too much makeup on a date “false advertising”? Am I meant to look fresh and dewy and natural? Should I leave a smokey eye and a bold lip at home just incase my date thinks that my lips are naturally as red as the blood of my ex dates? I always thought the test of how much a guy is into you is if he ghosts you the first time you cleanse, tone and moisturise in his presence and he realises that your eyebrows aren’t actually that perfect and nope, your eyelids ain’t shimmery and feline shaped. I personally feel killer confident with a red lip (1975 by Charlotte Tilbury, if you want specifics) and is my go to in any situation that I need to feel like the best version of “me”, so if a nice strong lip or smouldering eye is your bag then wear it.

BEAUTY TEMPLE OPENS 3RD SALON FROM A BLOW DRY MENU PACKED WITH THE LATEST HAIR TRENDS TO POPULAR BEAUTY TREATMENTS INCLUDING HD BROWS, LVL EYELASH EXTENSIONS, MANICURES AND FACIALS, BEAUTY TEMPLE HAS EXPANDED ITS NOT TINGHAMSHIRE OFFERING WITH A THIRD SALON .
Located just two miles out of Nottingham city centre on Gordon Road in West Bridgford, the new salon opened at the beginning of May and is hoping to bring something different to the area. With a dedicated Blow Dry Bar, where guests can choose to receive a fabulous Chelsea Blow Dry (better known as a Kate Middleton) for a special occasion to a particular hairstyle from a menu of packages. This is the fourth business venture for owners Lucy Goodwin and Martin Goodwin, after initially launching their flagship salon on Queen Street in February 2006, the Owl House Day Spa, in Diseworth, in July 2011 and then Beauty Temple Mapperley in July 2017. As well as offering hair services at the new West Bridgford salon, the business is sticking to its roots in the beauty and spa industry and has a packed brochure of treatments available for men and women. Including Elemis, Biotec, anti aging facials and detox body wraps. 28 | IN Nottingham | June 18
Similar to the other two salons, the new venue will also have a luxurious champagne nail bar, where guests can be pampered all while enjoying a glass of bubbly.
The new salon will be open seven days a week, with late night openings until 8pm on Thursday and Friday nights. Customers can get royally pampered whilst enjoying a cocktail or glass of prosecco, before heading out for a glamorous night on the town. Look out for special events throughout the year, where guests will be treated to cocktails and music from the salon’s in-house DJ. The Beauty Temple is also available to hire for children’s birthday parties and hen-dos, and for Nottinghamshire brides, there is a tailored menu of treatments to help in getting ready for the big day. For bridal hair and make-up, there are the silver, gold and platinum packages to choose from.
The salon can also provide bespoke bridal hair accessories that are individually designed to suit any bridal look or theme. Owner Lucy Goodwin said: “I am delighted to be opening another Beauty Temple salon. It’s been a dream of mine to open a salon in West Bridgford, as I knew that this would be the perfect location to bring all the luxury and glamour that the Beauty Temple has to offer. “After the success of opening something slightly different in Mapperley, I’m confident that guests will enjoy popping in and treating themselves to one of our treatment. Everyone loves being pampered and whether you’re heading to an important work meeting, a formal occasion or a night out with friends, we can give you the ultimate package in getting ready.”
The Beauty Temple is located at 1 Gordon Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham, NG2 5LN. For more information call 01159811899 or go to beautytemple.co.uk

THE POWER OF RADIO FREQUENCY COLLAGEN WAVE IS ONE OF UK’S MOST SOUGHT AFTER FACIAL TREATMENTS, WITH CLIENTS REGULARLY FLYING IN FROM ACROSS THE WORLD FOR THEIR APPOINTMENTS. Designed and created by Dr Saleh, our exclusive skin tightening treatment uses radio frequency energy to tighten skin tissue – helping to contour and rejuvenate the skin.
This improves the existing collagen and promotes new collagen production to further tighten the skin, resulting in healthier, smoother skin and a more youthful appearance. This non-invasive treatment is a painless effective way of long term non-surgical skin tightening and lifting. Nicole Scherzinger: “A deep tissue massage is my all time favourite, but also any type of facial, particularly the Collagenwave facial - it’s awesome.”
The use of radio frequency in medical practice is not new and has been used medically for many years, resting on the principle of the modification of deeper skin layers through heat. Radio frequency has the ability to heat up deep layers of the skin and underlying tissue, causing deep collagen structures in the skin to immediately tighten.

BUILDING A FUTURE BASED ON EXCELLENT HEALTHCARE NOT TINGHAM’S NEWEST HOSPITAL HAS JUST CELEBRATED ITS FIRST ANNIVERSARY FOLLOWING A YEAR OF “SUCCESS, EXCITEMENT AND THE STEEPEST LEARNING CURVE EVER KNOWN!” Spire Nottingham Hospital, built at a cost of almost £60 million at the side of the city’s Tollerton Airport, has, over the past 12 months, dealt with hundreds of procedures both privately and under the NHS e-referral scheme. Hospital Director Will Pressley said early days had been ‘a little bit of a rollercoaster ride’ but that it was ‘full steam ahead’ as the hospital looks to the future. “Nothing will ever really prepare you for opening a brand new hospital,” he Will. “Just when you think all bases are covered something crops up that noone was expecting. Fortunately we have been able to handle everything that has been thrown at us but it really has been the steepest learning curve I have ever known.” The 58-bed hospital, containing five theatres along with the latest in MRI scanning and robotic imaging technology, has already attracted the services of many of the region’s top consultants as well as patients from around Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands. 32 | IN Nottingham | June 18
“We have so much to offer, from theatres equipped with the very latest technology to patient bedrooms that would not be out of place in a five star hotel! Visitors really have been taken aback by how good the hospital looks and the facilities we have here,” said Will.
An electronically adjustable patient table also allows a variable working height and angle, with the patient being raised, lowered and even turned into the optimal position for whichever procedure is necessary while rotating cameras can capture razor-sharp 3D images for anywhere in the body.
One particular ‘show-stopper’ is the hybrid theatre containing the Siemens Artis zeego. This provides unique robotic technology offering the very latest in imaging capability to help surgeons in areas including heart operations, joint replacements and spinal surgery.
Will said “I have watched surgeons in this hybrid theatre and it honestly makes me proud to be involved in a hospital that can offer something like this. In my opinion it really is the best of its kind available in the world today.”
At a cost of £1.5 million, the Siemens system makes it easier than ever to view internal organs from various sides – which can be crucial in diagnosing or ruling out tumours or vascular diseases.
“It has been a successful and exciting year but our work has really only just begun. I want to see Spire Nottingham established as a very important part of the region’s healthcare service, providing the best care available to people in the area.”

YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD FOR A NEW HIP PRINCE PHILIP MADE THE HEADLINES AND RAISED A FEW EYEBROWS WHEN – AT 96-YEARS-OLD – HE HAD AN ARTIFICIAL HIP FIT TED. But Spire Nottingham Hospital Orthopaedic Consultant Mr Andrew Manktelow says ‘you’re never too old for a joint replacement’ and proved his point when he successfully fitted a 95-year-old Nottinghamshire great-grandmother with new hip.
“Because of their age it may well be that the operation is more complex but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done. For instance their bones might be weaker – especially in female patients who are more susceptible to osteoarthritis. “Also, their muscles and tissue are going to be less strong than they once were and discs in the spine can degenerate, making it much less flexible than in a younger patient.” As for Irene, she is already getting round the house and has been out in the garden under the supervision of family members.
But now she says she is looking forward to the day when she can hop on a bus and pop into town for a little bit of shopping all by herself. She said: “I was at a stage where I had a dull ache in my hip more-or-less all the time – whether I was doing my household chores or just lying in bed trying to get some sleep. I loved pottering about in my garden, but I was in too much pain to do that anymore. “I knew I had to get a new hip if I was to start really enjoying life again and Mr Manktelow filled me with confidence about how the operation would go.”
Irene Davidson was suffering so badly from osteoarthritis she was even worried that she might have to go in a wheelchair because the pain of moving about was so great. By Mr Manktelow explained: “If the patient is fit and well then there is no reason why they can’t have the surgery – it is their health and not their age that should be the determining factor! We have to carry out a thorough examination to establish that their heart and lungs are up to both the operation and recovery before we decide to go ahead with surgery.

BRINGING SCIENCE FICTION INTO THE HERE AND NOW IT HAS A FUTURISTIC LOOK THAT WOULDN’T BE OUT OF PLACE IN A HOLLYWOOD SCI FI BLOCKBUSTER, BUT THE LATEST SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY TO BE UNVEILED AT SPIRE NOT TINGHAM HOSPITAL IS DEFINITELY OF THE HERE AND NOW! At a cost of £1.5 million the Siemens Artis zeego provides unique robotic technology offering the very latest in imaging capability that will help surgeons in areas including heart operations, cancer treatments, joint replacements and spinal surgery. An electronically adjustable patient table allows a variable working height and angle, with the patient being raised, lowered and even turned into the optimal position for whichever procedure is necessary while rotating cameras can capture razor-sharp 3D images for anywhere in the body. The quality of the images means that surgeons get real-time visual guidance allowing them to navigate through complex anatomy to reach the targeted treatment area, while increasing the number of available treatment options. 36 | IN Nottingham | June 18
An improved image quality can also mean a shortened operation time and a quicker recovery for the patient. The Artis zeego also makes it easier than ever to view internal organs from various sides and can be crucial in diagnosing or ruling out tumours or vascular diseases. Bruce Braithwaite, a consultant vascular surgeon at Spire Nottingham Hosptial, explained: “Advances in technology have helped unlock new medical possibilities and the Artis zeego is one of the most instrumental elements in that change.
“Any patients undergoing treatments need to have it done in an operating theatre that has the highest spec imaging equipment. That’s exactly what we have here at Spire Nottingham.” For cardiac surgery the Artis zeego enables cardiologists to have optimized visualization of the heart thanks to a medical-grade 56-inch screen. It also includes a tool which provides high-speed quantification for accurate measurement of any damage to the patient’s body tissues or organs.
Review By Steve Allsopp
THE LACE MARKET HOTEL UPON ARRIVAL, I NOTED THE DISTINCT MATURE AND ELEGANT VIBES OF THE TASTEFULLY FITTED LARGE RECEPTION AREA. I loved the mirror on the wall behind the gentleman who greeted me. He was very attentive, smiling and even walked me to the elevator - a beautifully restored panelled lift, just like the old days. Moving onto our suite there really was a wow factor. Two levels with stunning views over St Mary’s Church and the historic Shire Hall, the location for the National Justice Museum.
38 | IN Nottingham | June 18
In a way I felt as though I had stepped back in time to the elegant periods of Georgian and Victorian splendour.
This hotel is simply stunning. The location is excellent and the whole area around the site is superb.
The room was very palatial, seating in a living area, lots of storage and the bathroom was incredible. I ventured off to explore and perhaps no surprise it was the bar first.
This venue has to be one of my favourites now and the hotel has everything and so much more. One of the main selling points here is the freshly prepared locally-sourced foods which I couldn’t wait to taste in the luxurious Merchants restaurant.
Upon entering the Saint Bar, which is owned by the hotel, I again received a light and friendly welcome from the bar staff, especially Romain. The bar is perfect for hotel guests or visitors. The drinks were quite something, nothing too complicated but put together with real passion, nostalgia and imagination beyond your regular cocktail establishments. This was a cocktail menu that transcends styles but follows the seasons.
We were greeted by the delightful Michela and seated in a quiet corner of this stunning room. It was bright, spacious and very glamorous. The excitement of tasting all those cocktails was still flowing through my body and then came the cheese butter and hazelnut and truffle buns. They were all locally sourced, including the bread and all I can say is yum yum, so much so I asked for more.
As the five-course dinner began and referred to as the ‘Chef’s Life - 1987-2018’. The food began its journey to our table. I say food loosely but I should have said the gastronomic journey of more nostalgia, passion and joy. Plate after plate it arrived, visually stimulating to say the least. We felt like kings of Nottingham for the whole night.
What flavours, what an inspiration and what a chef! The final course was ‘Grandpa’s Greenhouse 2016 ‘ – garden pea, white chocolate, water mint and coconut. This was again stunning.
If you are celebrating, have friends over for a night or a weekend, have a meeting to organise or just want to relax, then you must put this venue at the top of places to experience.
I must add that this experience was strengthened by the service and friendliness of all the staff. Without doubt the cocktails were amazing and the food, I’m lost for words.
The Lace Market Hotel is located on 29-31 High Pavement, The Lace Market, Nottingham, NG1 1HE.
The starter – ‘Fishing for Mackerel 1996’ – was a stunning presentation and very tasty. ‘Summer BBQ with the Boys 2007’ was inspired by the chef and his years in the Royal Marines - aged beef, mustard, shallots, apple and charcoal – absolutely amazing.
WE FELT LIKE KINGS OF NOTTINGHAM FOR THE WHOLE NIGHT. This was followed by ‘Home Sweet Home’ – inspired by his days setting up home in Melton Mowbray in 2014. What an experience - spring lamb, broad beans, asparagus and morels. Stunning! The next course was the fourth course – ‘Picking Apples in the Orchard’ and was inspired from the days he picked apples in his local orchard in 2015, with apples, tarragon and liquorice.

MALAYSIA, IT’S TRULY ASIA “MALAYSIA, IT’S TRULY ASIA” IS HOW THE MALAYSIA TOURIST BOARD DESCRIBES ITSELF AND WE AT JUST JOURNEY HAVE TO SAY WE AGREE.
Most journeys through Malaysia will start in the country’s capital Kuala Lumpur. KL’s most striking feature are The Petronas Towers, and they are an awesome site at any time of the day. There are also the night markets to explore and the Hawker Restaurants to experience. Our secret tip would be to check out the Helipad bar which is on top of one of the highest buildings in the city. A bar on the roof of a skyscraper, what’s not to like!
This country has everything; all types of cultures, varied cuisine, wildlife, beaches, jungle… the list is endless.
For me the island of Penang is a spectacular destination. I have never been to a more diverse city than that of Georgetown; where Indian, Chinese, British and Malay people all live side by side.
The more sensible sister of neighbouring Thailand; it has the same awe-inspiring scenery, fantastic weather, friendly people and beautiful beaches, but in Malaysia you can avoid the crowds and the more developed beach resorts to find a more peaceful holiday experience.
This of course makes for some of the best foodie experiences I have ever had. You walk for twenty minutes and you pass through the small neighbourhoods of Little India, Chinatown and Colonial Britain, all with their own unique markets and delicious food stalls.
40 | IN Nottingham | June 18
Then you turn a corner and you’re back in Malaysia. It is a real melting pot of cultures and a treat for all y our senses. For honeymooners, beach lovers, and those just looking for peace and relaxation the Island of Langkawi to the north is a sensational paradise. Long white sand beaches, excellent value five-star hotels, and turquoise water are all calling you. It is impossible to fit all Malaysia has to offer in one small article! Ask us about the Cameron Highlands, a beautiful rolling landscape of tea plantations and valleys, and our Borneo wild Orangutan encounters.

LOUNGING AROUND JUST WHEN WE THOUGHT WINTER WOULD NEVER END SPRING HAS JUST ABOUT BEEN AND GONE. TULIPS ARE BEING REPLACED BY BILLOWING ROSES, FRAGRANT LAVENDERS AND GORGEOUS GERANIUMS. The garden has once again become somewhere to sit back, relax and enjoy. Traditionally, at the end of the day, the gardener will pull out their trusty deckchair from the shed, dust off the cobwebs and find a quite corner to enjoy the borders hoping that the mice had not eaten through the cotton during the winter! Now of course there is a much wider selection of styles and materials used on outdoor furniture, allowing the furniture to be used all year round, and low maintenance to boot. One of the biggest developments on outdoor furniture materials over the last few years has been the development of synthetic wicker. This is generally made from polyethylene, an oil based material, pretty much impervious to the elements and hence ideal for outdoor spaces. However, like many materials, this has developed in widely different qualities and if you are tempted down this route; buyer beware!
42 | IN Nottingham | June 18
When choosing outdoor weave furniture, try and select furniture where the weave is extremely tight and taut, not floppy or loose, otherwise you may find over time the weave will sag in the heat or even crack in the cold. A good test is if can you stand on the base and jump up and down without it splitting or stretching! Check how straight the weave is and also check underneath the item to see the finishing too. The wide, flat weave of a few years back is now being replaced by a much finer, stronger and far more elegant fibre.
Taking its influence from the classic Lloyd Loom furniture of the Edwardian era, the fine weave lends itself to shaped or curved chairs and tables, giving outdoor furniture far more classic style. The Lloyd Loom specialist company Vincent Sheppard now uses the synthetic weave on their outdoor furniture, as well as still making the original, interior Lloyd Loom. With improved technology other new materials are also being used on outdoor lounge furniture. A notable one is the use of webbing and rope in allweather fabrics, such as the Conic modular seating range by Cane-line.
The effect is soft, textured furniture which will link your indoor and outdoor spaces harmoniously together.
tray, making it easy to bring carry drinks from the kitchen outside to the patio or visa versa.
Once you have decided on your outdoor relaxing seating, think about how you may accessorise it. The trend is now to move towards a relaxed mix and match approach of mixing side tables, textured footstools and easy chairs, rather than complete matching sets. There are some lovely occasional side tables on the market, where the table top doubles up as a
With a nod to retro revival why not make life even easier for you by having a drinks trolley to hand, and easy way to wheel food and drink out to the patio, there are also some lovely ones on the market such as from the beautiful Roll Bar Trolley by Cane-line. So keep the deckchair in the shed and lounge around your outdoor space with new materials and accessories.

SPARE US THE BLUSHES! IT’S FIFTY SHADES OF GREY! TRENDS, IN THE HOME AND INTERIORS WORLD ARE GENERALLY SET BY COLOUR AND STYLE. THEY COME AND GO AND KEEP THE ‘FASHION’ OR TRENDS EVER CHANGING. As an interior designer it’s then my job to interpret these colours and styles and by introducing texture and tone and pattern bring them neatly into clients’ homes. One colour which is definitely here for the duration is grey. A huge array of tones or shades are available in a grey. Grey can begin as a black, blue, purple or brown and then toned down into a grey. As a base colour in a room, grey works beautifully and allows for many combinations to be introduced. A real favourite of mine at the moment and a current trend is Blush. The immediate conclusion might be to use Blush in a bedroom but it’s a really versatile accent in many rooms. Although Blush sits slightly to the feminine side, team it with copper and the balance between the feminine and masculine is perfect. 44 | IN Nottingham | June 18
Purely due to the metallic element of copper, using it in light fittings and lamps is clever and eyecatching. This Eglo Rocamar Copper Pendant is a great example of copper lighting which will offer up a warm ambient light source.
Available from Argos at £47.99 I think it’s an absolute bargain! Using Blush to add true glamour I came across this stunning scalloped velvet accent chair from Rockett St George. A statement piece of furniture which delivers on both quality and style in abundance. Available online for £580.
Sometimes using an unusual colour in a place you might not expect it will also create a wow factor. The Little Greene Paint Company have used Dorchester Pink – Mid Tone on this front door and it offers a lovely welcome home for you and your guests alike. You’ll certainly stand out from the neighbours too and as far as I’m concerned it’s all about standing out from the crowd.
So now its down to you to explore, find your shade of grey and get accessorising! Blush and copper, zesty lemon and limes – your choice. Have fun x
