Review By Sophie Colley
THE ALCHEMIST GET READY TO INDULGE IN A COMPLETELY NEW WAY OF DINING. THEIR DARK THEATRICAL FLAIR CREATES A UNIQUE AND MAGNIFICENT EXPERIENCE THAT EVERYONE IS CRAVING! With their creative cocktails and darkly delicious dining, The Alchemist has set up shop in the magnificent listed building on King’s Street. After recently opening in Nottingham, The Alchemist is continuously growing in popularity as more and more people discover the dark side. IN Magazine were very excited to be invited to see what The Alchemist had to offer.
6 | IN Nottingham | May 18
As soon as we walked inside we were taken out of Nottingham and into a new dark magnificent world. With gorgeous tiled flooring, dark industrial architecture and beautifully drawn illustrations, The Alchemist is remarkable! After we were promptly seated, our waiter poured us some water and gave us a few moments to look over the menu. As a cocktail enthusiast, I have seen some pretty amazing cocktails in my time, or so I thought. The Alchemist’s cocktail menu is inspired by a periodic table. With lighter, fruity cocktails starting at the left, leading into more serious and darker cocktails on the right, they truly cater for everyone. Non-alcoholic cocktails are also available and are just as delicious.
WOW - IT WAS A THEATRICAL SHOW!
After speaking with the waiter to see which cocktails he’d recommend, he told us about the Lightbulb Moment and the Colour Changing One – So that’s what we ordered! We were very intrigued as we headed over to the bar to watch our cocktails come to life. Wow – It was a theatrical show! The first cocktail was served to us in a smoking glass lightbulb. The dry ice created beautiful smoke that flowed out over the glass and down onto the work surface. When serving this into our glass, we were utterly fascinated by the beauty behind this drink. The second cocktail was presented to us in two conical flasks. One containing a clear liquid and the other containing a dark blue liquid. We were told to pour the blue liquid in first followed by the clear one and as it says in it’s name, the colour changed!
We love how they make the cocktails interactive and it’s the small details like this that make The Alchemist magical.
SO FAR, WE WERE AMAZED! It’s not only their cocktails that made an impression on us, but also their food. The Alchemist’s menu puts a devilish twist on traditional dishes. After much consideration, as everything looked so good, we decided to start with Vegetable Gyozas and Pork Bon Bons. We were intrigued by the Pork Bon Bons as they sounded so fun and wow we were not disappointed. Beautifully crisp on the outside with a tender soft filling. Dipped into the chipolata mayo, it created the most delightful kick that brought all of the flavours together. The Vegetable Gyozas were just incredible. The soft and silky texture against the fresh vegetables inside tasted amazing dipped into the sweet chilli dip creating an unbelievable starter. So far, we were amazed! Next came the main event – as they quote on their menu. We decided to put their Beef Burger and Fries to the test as well as their Chicken Fajitas. Two very traditional dishes but with a twist.
The Beef Burger was incredibly juicy and full of flavour, paired with their homemade Bloody Mary sauce it was lovely. As we said, traditional with a twist. We also ordered a side of fries which were a perfect concoction of crispy on the outside yet light and fluffy on the inside. Fajitas are a staple dish for most restaurants and at The Alchemist they give you the option to have it with vegetarian popquorn, beef or chicken. When they arrived they were served beautifully in multiple individual pots.
Under recommendation we went for the Cinnamon Waffles, which were a warm sweet crunchy bake and the Chocolate Brownie, which was full of warm gooey goodness. I don’t know how we managed to finish them, but they were too good to leave! So, as you can see, our visit to The Alchemist was certainly one to remember and we can’t wait to go back! The next time you’re out and about in Nottingham, whether that be for a day’s shopping or an evening drink, you must try The Alchemist.
The chicken was served on a hot skillet which the waiter drizzled in the seasoning at the table. All the flavours combined were amazing and a definite must try. As we were slowly starting to fill up from all the delicious food we’d been eating, the waiter came over to talk to about deserts.
WE LOVE HOW THEY MAKE THE COCKTAILS INTERACTIVE AND IT’S THE SMALL DETAILS LIKE THIS THAT MAKE THE ALCHEMIST MAGICAL.

ARE YOU BUSY BEING BUSY?
By Fi ona D uncan
SO OFTEN THESE DAYS, I GET ASKED “SO ARE YOU BUSY AT THE MOMENT”/ “KEEPING BUSY”? MY RESPONSE HAS ALWAYS TENDED TO BE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING, “YES ALWAYS”/ “OH YES VERY BUSY AT THE MOMENT” OR WORDS TO THAT EFFECT SEEMS LIKE AN EXPECTED, OBLIGATORY RESPONSE TO THAT UNIMAGINATIVE QUESTION SO OFTEN REPEATED, ESPECIALLY AT NETWORKING EVENTS PLACES I OFTEN FREQUENT.
fruit-infused water and meditating via our smart phones to combat. Therefore we clearly understand that being ‘stupidly busy’ all of the time is not that great for our health and happiness, so why do we continually yell from the rooftops that we are? Competitiveness could be one reason - we’re all striving for similar goals in life and working our butts off to get there - most of the time. So a clever marketing ploy to throw off your competitors, would of course be to let them know directly or indirectly that you are very ‘busy’ at the moment and business is going very well- even if it is not. Just be careful as people can generally see right through this. Honesty (more often than not) is the best policy.
Perhaps an alternative word to ‘busy’, could well be ‘productive’; question “Have you had a productive day?” - Sounds better right? Also feels much better to process and answer in an honest, less general way, leading into the reasons why your day has indeed been a productive one. By the way it’s ok to have less than productive days too, don’t beat yourself up about it, some days it’s ok to sit staring at the computer screen, wishing it were Friday and clock off earlier than normal to sit in the sun with an ice cream. Bottom line, don’t be busy at being busy, get better at being ‘productive’, prioritise, manage your time effectively each day and focus on one thing ‘on’ the business daily as well as working ‘in’ the business - the results will show and you will feel so much more rewarded and dare I say less ‘busy’.
Fiona Duncan- Steer, RSViP rsvipnetwork.co.uk fionaduncansteer.co.uk
It seems that if you are a business owner or indeed a worker in general, it is deemed to be frowned upon to be anything other than ‘busy’ in 21st-century Britain - the rat race as we know it. And yet, we have at the same time in recent years jumped on the bandwagon as a nation aware of the health and well-being trend, associating the stresses of life with illness and worse, taking on weekly yoga sessions, drinking May 18 | IN Nottingham | 9

St James Street is fast becoming one of the best streets for independent shopping in Nottingham. Handmade Nottingham transforms the space for the Markets, filling the tables with stalls and decorating the building with beautiful handmade decorations especially for the market. Hello Sunshine will also be returning doing her live 10 minute portraits! So come along and buy your loved one a gift from designer makers!
Led by Artistic Director Cassa Pancho, this company celebrates dancers of black and Asian descent, showcasing technique, precision and grace in specially commissioned pieces. As part of their latest double bill, Cathy Marston, renowned for her expressive and beautifully crafted work, choreographs a new narrative ballet for the Company. Based on Can Themba’s South African fable The Suit, this is the first dance adaptation of the affecting short story. Described as ‘charming and hilarious’ by Dance Europe magazine, the production mixes the classical and contemporary to distill the essence of Shakespeare’s comedy, unfolding to an eclectic soundtrack that includes Eartha Kitt, Barbra Streisand and Yma Sumac.
Barton Bros. will be giving away 110 free pints to celebrate local business Bartons’ 110th year at the Chilwell headquarters. The new business is poised to open up the garages at Bartons once again with an all new monthly street food night. ‘The Garage’ is set to feature live music, a whole host of international foods and drink, and is hoping to add to the recent trend of high quality evening entertainment in Beeston and Chilwell. The venue, an ex-bus garage, was home to Barton Transport who at one stage were Britain’s largest independent bus operator. In the last decade it has seen occasional use as a quirky events space hosting a range of diverse events such as warehouse parties, drive in cinemas, international art exhibitions and most recently monthly Sunday markets and comedy nights, which will be continuing throughout 2018. The organisers are Barton Bros. Limited, founded by Richard, James and Tom Barton, who have been hoping to bring this type of event to the area for a number of years.

Previous line-ups have also included The xx, Ed Sheeran, Mumford and Sons, The 1975, Frank Turner, Caribou, Wolf Alice, Jake Bugg, SBTKRT, Florence + The Machine, Peace, Courtney Barnett and many, many more.
Fed up with flogging their guts out and always having to be in charge, the Grumpy Old Women have put their knobbly old feet up in glorious retirement, free at last to practise their extreme colouring-in, ukulele orchestra and novelty fudgemaking. But with the world in a bigger mess than ever before, is there anything that can tempt them off their backsides to unleash their superpowers and once more come to the rescue ?! Join us for 90 mins of brand new ‘full-fat’, ‘batteries included’ comedy from the mistresses of grump.

THE LOST CITY ADVENTURE GOLF IN MAGAZINE WERE KINDLY INVITED TO HAVE A LOOK ROUND THE LOST CITY ADVENTURE GOLF, LOCATED DOWNSTAIRS IN NOT TINGHAM’S CORNERHOUSE. The first thing we saw when we walked in was Barry the Parrott – The Lost City Adventure Golf mascot. As we continued further in to collect out golf clubs we were instantly hit with this beautifully realistic environment that makes you feel like you’ve been taken to the jungle.
16 | IN Nottingham | May 18
With plants weaving around stone archways, wicker huts and rope walkways hanging mid-air, it’s just an incredible sight. Catering for a wide variety of events from fun children’s parties, lively stag & hen dos, school groups, team building, corporate events and general group bookings, they’ve got something for everyone! With their age range starting from budding adventurers of 3, all the way up to 103, The Lost City Adventure Golf is suitable for everyone – they also have wheelchair access, so all adventurers can play. If you fancy a night out, why not try their Cocktail Masterclasses that are held in their private bar area.
This is a great experience full of making cocktails, competitions and then you’re taken downstairs to play golf. If that doesn’t sound like fun, I don’t know what does! They have two 18-hole adventure courses to challenge yourself with: Temple Trail and Scared Skull. Throughout the courses you’ll come across beautiful greenery, talking creatures and crumbling ancient stone walls, you’ll even come across a skull or two – make sure to keep your eyes peeled and your nerves steady. If you choose the Temple Trail course, like we did, you’ll be embarking on an airy experience with a giant moving snake overhead, which we personally nicknamed Sammi.
Soundtracks of rain and thunder echoing throughout the course, it creates an experience which makes you feel right in the middle of a jungle storm. This course is designed to be the easier one out of the two, so if you’re a golf amateur like us, you might want to start with this one. We then moved onto the next course which is called the Scared Skull. With this course you’ll experience a completely different atmosphere. With the ceilings being lower and everything more encased, it’s a quieter and more difficult course designed to make you feel like you’re inside a cave. This course will confront you with a moving alligator, huge skulls and exciting shots – this is definitely a course to show your boss who’s boss with your golf skills! After you’ve finished playing golf you can head back upstairs to the Tiki Bar to treat yourself to a cold beer or tropical cocktail. With 2-4-1 on cocktails every Monday to Thursday 4:30pm to 6:30pm, it’s the perfect way to end your visit at The Lost City Adventure Golf. If you prefer something non-alcoholic they also offer a range of mocktails, soft drinks as well as tea and coffee.
We ended our visit by trying their The Lost City Cocktail which was beautifully presented in a skull glass. This bright blue drink is delightfully sweet with juicy pineapple flavours. As well as this, we tried The Castaway Mocktail with was a beautiful bright sweet and citrusy drink. Whatever the weather you are sure to have a fun time at The Lost City Adventure Golf. Open all year round, 7 days a week from 10:30am to 11:00pm weekdays, 10:00am to 11:00pm Saturday and 10:00am to 10:00pm Sundays, you are guaranteed an exciting time. We had a great time out at The Lost City Adventure Golf and we believe it’s a definite must try the next time you’re in Nottingham – Why not take on your family to see who the best adventure golfer is! As we walked out we were left giggling with laughter as we discovered our Golf Names: Mulligan Grandmaster & Gimme Front-Nine – What’s yours?

THEY GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO INDULGE YOU INTO A THRILLING ADVENTURE, TESTING YOU AND YOUR FELLOW ESCAPEES PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND BEHAVIOURAL SKILLS. YOUR NEMESIS IS THE TICKING CLOCK. WILL YOU ESCAPE IN TIME? Originally opening July 2015, Cryptology started with just one escape room. In October of the same year, Cryptology expanded into their second room due to popular demand. Since then, they have relocated to Upper Parliament Street and have expanded up to three rooms plus one tour, with another room opening soon. After speaking with the owner, we were told that they have space for up to eight rooms in the future, so keep your eyes peeled – We can’t wait! Along with this, Cryptology are in the process of expanding to Sheffield which will be opening in Summer 2018.
18 | IN Nottingham | May 18
Currently with three different locations: Nottingham, Barnsley and soon to be Sheffield, all of Cryptology’s escape rooms are completely different, so wherever to go to visit them, you are sure to be in for a thrilling adventure. Cryptology is for all ages, whether you fancy seeing if your family has the skills to escape, work on your team building tactics with your colleagues or have an alternative night out with friends, as long as you’re up for a puzzle and a challenge, you are sure to have a great time.
AS YOU’RE LED TO YOUR ROOM AND GIVEN YOUR BRIEFING, EXCITEMENT IS HIGH FOR WHAT AWAITS. Cryptology stands out against the crowd due to their amazing unique experiences which keep you coming back for more. They even have a conference room for meetings that caters for up to 15 people. Something else they offer which is quite different is the Robin Hood Discovery Tour. On a 2.9 mile round tour, you go from point to point tackling clues and puzzles to find your way to the next location. Within this you get to discover some of Nottingham’s hidden treasures. This one is great for families, tourists and even Nottingham locals. Inside their Nottingham site, you have the option to complete three games: Agents of Danger, Cypherdyne and Rameseize, with Dreamscape coming soon. Whether you fancy yourself as an Indiana Jones,
a secret agent, or part of a security team, your skills will definitely be put to the test – Will you escape? Their Agents of Danger escape room will have you testing your detective abilities as you go underground into Nottingham’s Caves to find Dr Alan Geex’s hidden lair. Will you foil Dr Geex’s sinister plot and save the day, or will you end up six feet under? Cypherdyne will have you and your team working together to become part of Cypherdyne’s elite security team. Will you be up for the challenge? Finally, how do you feel about heading down into the tomb of the nefarious Ramses to find the 3 hidden relics. Can you find them all and escape Rameseize in time before the ruthless treasure hunters bury you alive? Once you’ve gathered your team and picked your theme, get ready to put your brains to the test for an adventure of a lifetime. As you’re led to your room and given your briefing, excitement is high for what awaits. When the door closes and the realisation hits of being locked in, it’s time to start working as a team by putting the puzzles and clues together to beat the ticking time bomb. On our visit to Cryptology we decided to take our chances with the Rameseize game. We won’t spoil any of the details, but you’ll be faced with an exciting adventure, authentic set décor and handcrafted puzzles. You’ll think you’ve stepped into an ancient tomb within another world. IN Magazine had an amazing time at Cryptology and we cannot wait to go back! Can you solve the mystery to become the solution?

THE LITTLE LONDON HERBAL STORE FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS LIVED IN NOTTINGHAM FOR THE PAST 22 YEARS, IT STILL AMAZES ME WHEN I FIND NEW HIDDEN TREASURES. RECENTLY I HAVE DISCOVERED THE LITTLE LONDON HERBAL STORE LTD WHICH IS LOCATED RIGHT IN THE HEART OF NOTTINGHAM ON TRINITY WALK. Originating in 1847 by a Mr Charles Baines, The Little London Herbal Store didn’t know how much they would come to mean to the community. They have recently celebrated their 171st birthday with their now owner Helen Heffron, who took over the business from her stepfather in 1995 after working for him for 12 years.
20 | IN Nottingham | May 18
During their recent celebration, which was to celebrate 3 years in their newest shop, The Little London Herbal Store decided to bring the community together by inviting their old and new customers down into the walk to see and support all the amazing independent shops. This event turned out to be a wonderful day for all. When we arrived at the Little London Herbal Store and were greeted with a warm friendly welcoming. The first thing we noticed was how many products are stocked at The Little London Herbal Store, it’s amazing! When I mentioned this to Helen she told us that they are constantly moving the shop forward by branching out into cosmetics and body care. Helen also mentioned that every product has to go through a strict selection process, meaning they only stock products that meet this high criteria. After only being at The Little London Herbal Store for a few minutes, you could tell just how much the customers and community mean to Helen.
With no specific customer audience, The Little London Herbal Store are there to help everyone in any way they can. Another way they like to help is by going out into the community to give talks, which proves to be very effective for both the business and the customers. Following on from our conversation with Helen, we asked all the staff members a few questions about the most popular products and which were their favourites. Helen mentioned that they sell a lot of CBD, Turmeric, Platinum Biotix and the Weleda Rose Skincare range. To someone who doesn’t know much about herbal or conventional medicine, I didn’t really understand what they were. Helen was brilliant at explaining about the products to us giving us a better understanding.
Helen also told us that Probiotics are essential as a good foundation for the gut and for the whole-body health. Along with this Helen likes the Thyroid complex and Night Time complex. Kerry’s favourite is Shatavari, which is an aruvedic herb to help with female hormone imbalance. Lastly Joshua told us his favourite was the Moogoo Skin Range which is brilliant for dry, irritated skin. We asked Helen if there was any more benefit to herbal treatments over conventional medicine? She told us that she believes everything has a place, conventional medicine, herbal remedies, homoeopathy etc. Lots of herbal remedies are supportive to the body and can help to prevent ailments. Helen always tell her customers to consult their doctor or pharmacist, but they have also had a
few doctors who recommend their patients to The Little London Herbal Store too. Helen mentioned all the staff members go on regular training courses to ensure they can offer the best advice on a regular basis to their customers. As we were finishing up our visit to The Little London Herbal Store, Helen mentioned to us that they are hoping to celebrate Notts Independent Day in June by having a festival in the walk as they did the previous year. So, make a note in your diaries! So, as you can see, we fell in love with our new discovery and we hope you all can pop down to see Helen at The Little London Herbal Store the next time you’re out and about in Nottingham.

OVERSHIRT’S
By Ash Allen
INSTEAD OF REMINDING YOU ABOUT HOW THE WEATHER HAS BEEN ALL OVER THE PLACE OF LATE, I THOUGHT I WOULD REMIND YOU THAT NOW IS PRIME TIME FOR OVERSHIRT’S. Shacket…shirt jacket...shirt…half shirt/half jacket… whatever you want to call them, they are the ideal transitional piece as the Spring weather gets closer. Whether its worn fully buttoned or zipped up, or layered with a t-shirt or shirt underneath, overshirt’s are certainly having a moment right now. So on that note, here are a few overshirt’s from the Spring/Summer 2018 season that might come in handy for you… Up first is the Selected Homme Cord Overshirt. In a heavy corduroy cotton, this piece is enough to keep you warm over the next few weeks and then after that, pop the buttons open and layer with a stripe t-shirt and take it for a ride into Summer.
Visayan Coach Jacket. Native Youth Another key trend at the moment is workwear, which leads up nicely to this heavyweight Poly Cotton Snap Shirt from London workwear brand, M.C. Overalls.
The Selected Homme Cord Overshirt, £65. Article Clothing.
With minimal detail the Light Blue colourway doesn’t look as scary on as you’d imagine. A white t-shirt underneath with rinse wash denim or dark navy shorts and you are sorted.
A more casual piece is the Kaiser Zip Jacket from Liam Gallagher’s Pretty Green. Made from 100% nylon, and with a fancy full zip front, the Kaiser Jacket is the ideal piece of clothing for those pub back garden afternoons.
Marshall Artist 60/40 Hiking Overshirt, £75. 80s Casuals Classics. Ripstop fabric is made using a special reinforcing technique that makes them resistant to tearing or ripping, making them ideal for outerwear styles. In a vibrant orange colourway, the Hiking Overshirt from Marshall Artist comes with multiple pockets to the chest and their signature ‘Siren’ branding to the sleeve completes the look.
The Pretty Green Kaiser Zip Jacket, £89. 80s Casuals Classics. 22 | IN Nottingham | May 18

CUBA
WELCOME TO CUBA, THE COUNTRY THAT TIME FORGOT, THE JURASSIC PARK FOR CARS, THE PEARL OF THE ANTILLES. THERE IS A HOLIDAY ON THIS ISLAND PARADISE FOR EVERYONE.
For culture lovers, history buffs, and those who just like to sit back and relax in the sunshine, this island is for you. We have several approaches for a Cuba holiday. The first is a classic twin centre of Havana and beach. Experience the time warp that is Havana, admire the classic American automobiles rolling past, brands like
Oldsmobile, Chevrolet and even the old Plymouth brand from Chrysler cannot be seen like this anywhere else in the world. Perhaps experience the ballet, admire the architecture or just have a coffee (or cigar) and watch the world of a yesteryear stroll by. Next the beautiful beach resort of Varadero, where a luxurious 5* resort beacons you. Feel the warmth of the sun on your face as you sip a cocktail on the beach and admire the blue Caribbean Sea. Luxury and indulgence await, and you deserve it. The other option we have is something a bit different, and we highly recommend it. Head out into the unseen Cuba by experiencing a tour of the island with a twist. We will avoid the large resorts and business style hotels we are so familiar with and stay in a selection of the
local family run ‘Casas’. These old homely houses give you an authentic insight to the Cuban way of life. Home cooked food is served, and after you sit on the porch and enjoy a mojito and get to know your new local friends. Explore the UNESCO world heritage site as its meant to be seen, through the winding cobbled streets, over the fields and admiring the colonial architecture and unique culture all along the way. We really can’t recommend Cuba enough, especially since Irma paid her toll on the island, and now Castro’s reign has ended. The changes are coming, so this year is the time to visit. Call, email or pop in and see us. We are West Bridgford’s independent travel agency. www.justjourney.co.uk

JOINING UP YOUR OUTDOOR AND INDOOR SPACE
GORGEOUS GARDENS AND OUTDOOR SPACES ARE CREATED BY A SUCCESSFUL COMBINATION OF THREE ELEMENTS; TEXTURE, CONTRAST AND OF COURSE, COLOUR. Naturally, this does not stop at the planting, with hard landscaping, art and water all potential components to be thrown into the mix. Outdoor spaces are rapidly becoming an extension of interior spaces and are increasingly being planned and designed in this way too, with many homes now having large open plan kitchen/living areas, with bi-fold or large Crittall-style doors that lead outside. The patio is no longer just a stepping stone to the garden, but is now becoming a ‘transition zone’ between your inside and outside space. Therefore it appears thankfully that looking out onto tired old wooden or wrought iron furniture is becoming a thing of the the past, so now more than ever is time to treat your outdoor dining area with the respect it deserves. The Lyon based manufacturer Fermob specialises in beautifully designed outdoor furniture in a palette of 24 colours. 26 | IN Nottingham | May 18
This allows you to combine diverse styles and colours to create your own personal collection. Allow your imagination to flow by mixing, matching or contrasting against your planting and landscaping scheme. But how to use it? A classic and timeless option would be to select furniture in one colour, or to choose a soft monochromatic blend of different shades.
Dramatic effects can be achieved with this approach, but to carry it off successfully and really add to your outdoor space, allow your planting to be bold and vibrant. Another on-trend option would be to mix different chair styles around the table, but keep the colour the same on all the pieces. The effect can actually look like a carefully curated collection of gorgeous junkyard classics, particularly if close attention is paid to the chair legs.
Of course more adventurous souls can opt for a combination of colours just as you would in a bed or border. Choose darker neutral shades such as shades of plum, greens or greys for the table and then use the colour wheel to combine chair colours for maximum impact. Outdoor furniture, of course, is not just about dining tables and chairs. Your lounge has now flowed out of the home and into your outdoor space.
Fermob has beautiful collections of contemporary, relaxed outdoor seating such as Croisette - small 2- seater woven seats and sofas, perfect for smaller city areas where space is at a premium. Finally, remember the garden can be used almost all-year-round (weather permitting!). Use outdoor lanterns such as Balad, firepits, throws and rugs for extra cosiness on late summer evenings.
For more information contact The Worm that Turned, at worm.co.uk or visit their store on Derby Road, Nottingham. They can help you cherry pick the perfect combination for your outdoor space.
In winter time, when much of the brighter natural colour has gone, the furniture is then a beacon of hope to remind one of spring and summer bliss to come.

INSPIRING TRAVELS TO BRING HOME AS WE REACH THE FIRST OF THE SUMMER MONTHS MOST OF US ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A HOLIDAY OF SOME DESCRIPTION . Whether that’s a short City break, a long relaxing, overseas beach holiday or a tour of some of the wonderful scenery that Britain has to offer, we can use our travels to inspire the spaces we live in. As a starter, if you’ve ever experienced the colours, shapes and textures of Morocco, either in person or just in a brochure, you can see how the influences can easily be translated into your homes. The geometric shapes and vibrant hues that are so obvious in the culture bring a wonderful warmth into our homes here in Blighty! Exotic and luxurious, the fabrics and metallics mix together to create a genuine visual delight. The stunning Moroccan lanterns add a real interest to lighting elements and this is a great example from Ocean Lighting available online. The detailed fretwork typical of the country can be seen on furniture or accessories and adding areas of this into a room will tie the concept in beautifully. 28 | IN Nottingham | May 18
You can even mirror the shapes on your wallpaper, like this one which has the design created by using glass beads.
Closer to home, take a look at the colour combinations offered up when visiting places like the Peak District.
This can bring a different feel to a room depending on the time of day as natural light will reflect differently to that of a lamp or ceiling light. I am a huge fan of this glass bead wallpaper – it brings such personality and interest.
Quite obvious are the strong orange tones with the cooler purples and then look again and find the more neutral greys lifted by the vibrant yellows. If Mother Nature has brought these together in the most natural of settings, who are we to disagree?
Use this palette in your soft furnishings, wall colours and accessories to create a living space inspired by this natural beauty spot. Across the continents, some tourist spots show their heritage such as the wonderful Art Deco area in Miami Beach. The collection of pastel colours and obvious lines and shapes are typical of this design era. A simple way to introduce a little art deco influence could be through mirrors or lighting. This mirror from Dunelm is a distinctive art deco shape and also adds a little glamour, which was a huge characteristic of the time.
So, wherever you find yourself in the world, take a moment to look around you. What distinguishing features catch your eye? How do colours and textures appear in your surroundings? Also, the best tip I can also offer is that souvenirs from your travels and expeditions are always a fantastic addition to your interior schemes. They provide a story and memories which in themselves add character and individuality to your home. Happy Travels!!
