Green Buildings And Sustainable Performance On Display IN the biggest show in its 14 year history, ARBS 2012 will pack more than 250 exhibitors under one roof at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. Open over three days to allow visitors plenty of time to browse, exhibitors will showcase their latest offerings, including plenty that support architects and specifiers seeking high green star and NABERS ratings. Running alongside the exhibition, the ARBS 2012 technical seminar series gives you a golden opportunity for professional development and industry networking. This year’s seminar series focuses on sustainability and building performance. Behind the Curtain Keynote speaker Jerry Yudelson looks behind the curtain to see the reality about so-called sustainable buildings. In a sneak preview of the material to be covered in his forthcoming book The World's Greenest Buildings: Promise Versus Performance in Sustainable Design, international thought leader Yudelson discusses case studies and green building performance, including Australia’s own Pixel building. Nominated by James L Williams and selected as a finalist in the ARBS industry awards category for HVAC Project Excellence, the Pixel building has just been awarded the world’s highest LEED rating from the US Green Building Council. Those with a deep-seated interest in this area will not want to miss the opportunity to attend Yudelson’s MasterClass. The small group session offers the opportunity to pick Yudelson’s brains about the space, in addition to hearing the results of his latest research and practical work. If you’re looking to take your sustainable building design to the next level, this is an opportunity to seize. Green Star – Performance, Energy Performance Contracts and More Other seminar sessions include an update on the state of the Green Star – Performance rating tool. Presented by Robert Milagre of the Green Building Council of Australia, this session has the details you need to understand the new rating system and how and when it will be taken up by industry. Bryon Price of A.G. Coombes will tell you “everything you ever wanted to know about energy performance contracts – but were afraid to ask!”, while Anthony Calderone of Aurecon profiles a green retrofit project undertaken in Melbourne’s CBD. Entry to the ARBS exhibition is free to trade visitors. Preregister online at www.arbs.com.au to save time at the door, and receive your visitor pass by email or direct to your mobile phone. Seminars attract a small cost to reserve your place – again, visit www.arbs.com.au to register.

Affordable Energy Efficiency With ThermAL®
New Stainless Steel Grates From Stormtech
TREND® Windows and Doors has undertaken extensive research and development to produce a more energy efficient product enabling new building requirements to be achieved cost effectively. Australian designed, ThermAL® is a revolutionary hybrid window product combining the strength of aluminium with ERP™, a new patented insulating skin. ERP™ is an advanced Extruded Rigid Polymer, which incorporates a number of innovative properties. ThermAL® has been designed to accommodate double glazed units up to 26mm and with over 60 glazing options available, there's one to suit any climate zone in Australia. When compared with existing energy efficient window options, ThermAL® is a more cost effective solution by far. ThermAL® is available in awning, casement and fixed windows as well as sliding and hinged doors. Exhibiting at DesignEx, Stand #1040.
STORMTECH has been providing inspiring architectural drainage solutions to architects and builders for the last twenty years. As the pioneers in linear drainage for bathrooms and showers, the original Stormtech grate was the architectural wedge-wire. Two other types of stainless steel grates have been introduced since then: the circular hole punched version (PH series) and the slot perforated version (PS series). New to the market are 3 additional lengths for the PH and PS grates. In addition to the standard 1200mm length, they are now also available in 900mm, 1000mm and 1500mm lengths. These additional sizes will suit most common size requirements for installations and therefore reduce the number of grates used by avoiding grate cut downs.

What Are Cool Roofs?
Radiant energy reflected before it’s absorbed
Weathered Galv Roofing 80°C+
IMPROVE the energy efficiency of existing buildings by reflecting more of the sun’s energy, using Heat Reflective Coatings from Dulux® Q. InfraCOOL® Technology – what is that? A. InfraCOOL® Technology by Dulux® works by targeting the invisible INFRA-RED portion of the sun’s energy which accounts for around 50% of the heat energy hitting the surface. Even dark colours can be made cooler. Q. How does a Cool Roof work? A. Cool Roofs reflect maximum amounts of the sun’s light energy and light is reflected as light, NOT heat and hence reduces the build-up and storage of heat in urban environments. The reason we see the colours we see is because certain portions of the visible light spectrum are either absorbed or reflected. White reflects almost all visible light and black absorbs almost all visible light, which is why dark surfaces are naturally hotter than light ones. The visible light makes up only half of the total light energy. The other 50 per cent (mainly invisible infrared) is largely ignored in conventional products. With Cool Roof, the temperature of the surfaces can be reduced by 20 and 40 percent translating into cooler occupancy, lowering cooling energy demand which delivers both cost and carbon emission savings. Q. So how much cooler is Dulux® Cool Roof? A. It varies dependant on the colour choice, building structure & air movement. For a typical Dark GreyBlack roof a surface temperature difference of 10-20°C
can be demonstrated which translates into less heat flow into roof & living spaces. Q. What are the benefits of using Dulux’s heat reflective coatings? A. • Saves you money – Cooler surfaces translate directly to cooling energy savings. Comparative studies identify 20 to 40 percent cooling energy saving potential relative to design. (1) A. • Improve occupancy comfort – Tenants will enjoy cooler and more pleasant living or working conditions. A. • Reduce carbon based emissions – Cool roofs directly reduce the artificial build-up of heat in urban areas. Globally, a Cool Roof strategy could offset 2.4 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. (2) Q. How is the product applied? A. Commercial Roofing – 2 coats of one primer and one topcoat over properly galv-zinc roofing via airless spray. Residential Roofing – 1 primer and 2 topcoats applied over properly prepared concrete tiled roofs or iron roofs via airless spray.

applications in protective membrane systems, extending the roof life cycle by 10+ years. Q. What colours are available with InfraCOOL® Technology? A. Dulux® InfraCOOL® technology is an option for most colours across the AcraTex® Roof Membrane colour range. Additionally Dulux® has formulated comparable colour matches to most popular Colorbond colours. Some colours benefit more than others from InfraCOOL® Technology. Refer to the InfraCOOL® colour range charts for confirmation of availability and performance potential. Q. Is this technology available in other Dulux ranges? A. Dulux® can also deliver InfraCOOL® benefits through its range of AcraTex® elastomeric wall coatings, reducing heat penetration into buildings and lessening the thermal stresses on concrete and lightweight facades. Exhibiting at DesignEx, Stand #200.
Q. Will it extend the lifecycle of my roofs? A. InfraCOOL® Technology can be applied to galv-zinc metal or concrete tiles in commercial or residential
Dulux® AcraTex® Cool Roof White delivers maximum benefit reflecting >90% of the sun’s radiant energy. (1) Cooling Energy saving and (2) Carbon offset potential based on independent Cool Roof Case studies and research by Lawrence Berkeley Heat Island Group. Dulux® AcraTex® is a division of DuluxGroup (Australia) ABN 67 000 049 427 Dulux®, AcraTex® and InfraCOOL® are registered trade marks.

Wavebar Soundproofing By Pyrotek Noise Control
WAVEBAR is a high performance, flexible, massloaded vinyl noise barrier, offering superior acoustic transmission loss. Australian made, it enjoys an unparalleled 40+ years reputation in providing effective industry-leading performance in controlling noise. Wavebar was developed to meet market requirements for reducing noise in the domestic, commercial and industrial markets. It can be used to increase transmission loss therefore reducing noise transfer in walls and ceilings, to control the level of crosstalk between acoustically sensitive rooms, to reduce inter-office noise transmission providing comfort, privacy and confidentiality, for the control of external noise interference from aircraft, traffic and rain, and to increase performance of existing structures through retrofitting over existing walls and covering with plasterboard. Stiff lightweight panel constructions, such as plasterboard, drywall, plywood and hollow core walls,
typically have coincidence dip resonance which allows noise to pass through a construction. The coincidence dip is dependent on the material’s stiffness and thickness and occurs at the point where the sound transmitted through the structure matches the natural frequency of the panel. Wavebar prevents coincidence dip resonance. The thin, dense mass Wavebar barrier reflects and absorbs noise energy reducing the transmission of sound through walls, ceilings and floors, decreasing noise levels at the critical frequencies generated from mechanical equipment, engine noise and electronic audio technologies such as radio and television. To achieve its high performance, the Pyrotek engineering team developed Wavebar to be dense, thin, highly flexible, tear-resistant and strong. These properties give the product high transmission loss throughout the various weight ranges while providing flexibility in installation options.
The Wavebar series of products is available in five formats: Original (plain product), Quadzero (foil-faced), Outdoor (weather-faced), dBX (non-pvc) and Nonlite (for extra fire protection). Wavebar products are environmentally safe, contain no ozone-depleting substances and comply with European and Australian standards for Volatile Organic Compound emissions. The Wavebar series is produced in a quality assured manufacturing facility supported by comprehensive product and system testing. Full acoustics and fire test reports are available on application.

Hive: Designer Lighting From Kenneth Cobonpue & Friends
HIVE traces its origins back in 2001, when a group of friends acted upon a vision producing lighting and accessories. Inspired by Giulio Cappellini and his concept of the design house, Hive developed into a design and manufacturing facility where various designers can create objects for production under one roof. Hive resonates of busy occupants working incessantly, producing an expanding line of designer lighting and accessories both stunning and versatile. Built as a design habitat for designers and artisans, Hive cultivates an environment of creative freedom coupled with a strong sense of aesthetic discipline. The result is a variety of original forms, textures, and ideas in clever and invigorating expressions interpreted as pendant lights, ceiling lights, wall lamps and floor lamps. In addition, and designed by Hive are outdoor lighting and complimentary designer screens and furniture. Garnering most inspiration from nature (form or material) and fusing it with a deep respect for handmade production techniques, Hive finds its niche and identity with products that blend locallysourced, self sustaining organic materials such as rattan or abaca and traditional processes with modern design and innovation. The retention of traditional hand-working methods allows Hive Lighting to preserve a component of culture for future generations to come. Already designs such as C U-C Me, Chiquita, Fandango, Kris-Kros and Little People have become modern lighting designer classics. Hive products exude the beauty inherent in nature with the freedom and creativity of the human mind. Examples of some design influences include the fascination with creatures of all shapes and sizes, gargantuan mythical dragons and microscopic bacteria, and quirky technologies born out of raw imagination like mummified branches and exploding twigs – all indicative of nature's wonders in both the real and imaginary worlds. Hive was established as an associated company to Kenneth Cobonpue with separate design and manufacturing facilities dedicated to building an environment where the creative spirit freely roams. At Hive, design is intelligence made visible. In Australia, this intelligence designed by Hive is available at KE-ZU.

Sustainable Greenhouses Fittingly Clad In Ecoply Plywood RECENTLY erected especially for the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival was the latest incarnation of Greenhouse By Joost – a pop-up restaurant that combined food, art, building design and ecology. With Greenhouse, Joost Bakker endeavours to demonstrate to people how we can live a life that’s more environmentally sustainable by making simple changes and altering perceptions. ECOply® plywood by Carter Holt Harvey was used extensively in the new Greenhouse for non-structural cladding, wall panels and furniture, inside and out. Joost has always been an advocate for the benefits of ECOply – low embodied energy, economical use of a sustainable resource and local production resulting in lower carbon miles and local jobs. Another less known benefit, is the extremely low formaldehyde emissions – as tested and certified by the EWPAA. And of those almost negligible emissions, 50% is naturally emitted from the timber. The product selected for the build was quite knotty. Designers and builders traditionally use clear face plywood (BD grade) for ‘appearance’ projects, but Joost specifically utilises lower grades including ECOply CD and DD and even packaging grade plywood. It’s a good demonstration of ‘upcycling,’ which not only makes environmental sense – it makes economic sense. ECOply is available in BD, CD and DD grades in a range of thicknesses and as demonstrated at Greenhouse, can be used for just about anything.

Roof Anchors – It’s All About Staying On Top SECURE Anchor Systems has one priority in manufacturing and developing roof anchors – to assist building designers and workers implement height safety with a minimum of fuss and as easily as possible. Low profiles, clean lines and the ability to supply anchors powdercoated to Colorbond® colours allows for seamless integration with today’s modern roof lines. Secure Anchor Systems anchors are now being more widely accepted on domestic as well as commercial projects by architects and designers. The Corrugator® and Corrugator360® roof anchors are two such patented products being widely adopted and used throughout Australia, New Zealand and now North America. The anchors are surface mounted, preventing the need to access the roof cavity and making penetrations through the sisalation, insulation or roof members. Fixing through roof members such as top chords on trusses can also void warranties from truss manufacturers. Secure Anchor Systems also supplies a number of Ladder Access Points with the same surface-mounted principle for easy application. All Secure Anchor Systems anchors comply with and meet the 15 kN benchmark set out in AS1891.4 for fall arrest and can be installed in as little as 90 seconds with a standard cordless drill. Other anchors are manufactured to suit metal roof profiles, such as Trimdek® and Spandek® and Secure Anchor Systems can provide custom servicing for clients with specific height safety needs.

SAFEGUARD AGAINST POWER UPGRADE ISSUES GAS POWERED AIR CONDITIONING USES 90 LESS POWER* With power costs a growing concern, many clients are making the switch to Gas Powered VRF Air Conditioning for their business or commercial property. It uses up to 90% less electricity than the equivalent electric condenser*. That’s a serious saving right there. It also means you’re less likely to face power upgrade issues on-site. That’s more time and money better spent elsewhere. And because you’re reducing condenser-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 50%*, you’re also easing pressure on the environment. That could really help your building’s Green Star and NABERS rating. The benefits of Gas Powered VRF Air Conditioning really do stack up.
FOR MORE INFORMATION CALL 1800 052 464, EMAIL ORIGINSOLUTIONS@ORIGINENERGY.COM.AU OR VISIT ORIGINENERGY.COM.AU/GASAIRCON * Figures are approximates when compared to an equivalent electric condenser, and vary depending on unit size and location.
